uch of the creative elements and design came from my sister’s guidance and inspiration. M One of the most unique elements of the wedding was the flowers and use of tillandsia (air plants) in lieu of traditional greenery. We loved how the soft silvery-green of the xerographicas went with the softer creams and blushes of the peonies, roses and pink king protea that were used. –The Bride

Antique Apple Tart Recipe - 3 1/2 pounds apples (About 8-10 apples. I like to use a variety.) - 1 container (8 oz) fresh raspberries - 1/2 cup sugar - 2 tablespoons lemon juice - 1/4 cup all purpose flour - 1/2 teaspoon salt - 1 tablespoon butter, cut into small pieces - 1 each vanilla bean - 1 each egg yolk - 2 tablespoons heavy cream - 2 tablespoons sanding sugar - 1 recipe Pate Brisee (see below) 1. Divide pie dough (a.k.a pate brisee) in half and roll out each piece to about 1⁄4” thick. Place one piece in the refrigerator and line the bottom of a 9” tart or pie pan with the other. Place the tart pan in the refrigerator. 2. Peel and core apples. Cut into 3⁄4” - 1” chunks. Place them in a medium bowl with the raspberries, sugar, lemon juice, flour, salt, and the seeds from the vanilla bean. Toss to combine. 3. Remove both the tart pan and the extra piece of dough from the refrigerator. Place all of the apples in the tart and dot with butter. 4. Cut out hearts with remaining piece of dough and place all around the tart (starting at the outer edge and moving inward.) Refrigerate or freeze pie until firm, about 1-3 hrs., but not overnight. 5. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Make egg wash by whisking together yolk and heavy cream. Brush egg wash over pie and sprinkle with sanding sugar. Place tart on a sheet tray and bake at 425 for 15 min. Turn oven down to 375 and continue baking for an additional 30 minutes, or until the crust is a deep golden brown. The juices from the apples should be bubbling. Remove tart from oven and let cool on a wire rack before serving.

Pate Brisee (the pie dough) Makes enough for one, 9” pie (with top and bottom crust) - 2 1⁄2 cups all purpose flour - 1 teaspoon salt - 1 teaspoon sugar - 1 cup butter, cold, cut into ½ inch cubes - 1/3 cup + 2 tablespoons ice water In a food processor combine flour, salt and sugar. Pulse to combine. Add butter all at once and pulse for about 5 seconds until mixture resembles course crumbs with some larger pieces remaining. Add ice water and pulse just till water is mixed in, about 8-10 pulses. Dough will still be crumbly. Wrap in plastic, use a rolling pin to bring dough together, and refrigerate for at least an hour or up to overnight.

a few of our

Favorite Things Welcome Basket by leslie lewis sigler of lilly & louise

Are family and friends flocking far and wide for your big day? If you're having a destination wedding, welcome your guests with a sweet surprise upon arrival. Keep in mind your destination and fill the basket (or bag) with a few of your favorite things from the area. If you can, include a homemade treat to really show just how much you love them! You're welcome.

- Favorite local wine - Sparkling water with a squeeze of lemon - Lemon off our lemon tree (or from local farmer's market) - Local olive oil and aged balsamic vinegar (we got ours from www.ilfustino.com) - Handmade soap - Almonds in cotton pouch - Homemade strawberry crumble in mini mason jars (see recipe on next page) - Homemade toffee chip cookies (recipe on www.lillyandlouise.com)

A few of Leslie's favorites from Santa Barbara

STRAWBERRY CRUMBLE

Ingredients For the Strawberries 2 cups strawberries, washed, hulled and sliced 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1/3 cup granulated sugar Sprinkle of salt 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1 tablespoon cornstarch For the Crumble 1/4 cup salted butter, melted 1/3 cup brown sugar 1 teaspoon granulated sugar 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 2/3 cup all purpose flour

Directions Preheat oven to 375 degrees. 1. For the strawberry mixture, toss together strawberries, lemon juice, granulated sugar, salt, vanilla extract and cornstarch in a medium bowl. Set aside. 2. While strawberries sit and thicken, assemble the crumble. Add brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon and flour to a small to medium sized bowl. Whisk ingredients together. Slowly add in melted butter and stir in to combine until crumbs develop. 3. Add strawberry mixture to ramekins (I used two 6oz. sized ramekins/mason jars). Spoon crumbs over the tops of the strawberries. 4. Bake crumbles for 30 minutes. Serve with ice cream! Servings: Two 6oz.-sized ramekins/mason jars

SEAL OF AFFECTION DIY Wax Seals

by Cari Thomas, DIY Guru

create a classic wax seal that can be used to adorn any envelope, wine bottle, or even party favor. Tools and Materials: • Wax paper • Miniature wooden spools • Assorted buttons with shapes and designs

(we chose an anchor, but you could always use you and your beau's initials)

• Hot glue gun • Glue dots • Assorted color sealing-wax sticks/candles • Matches / lighter

How-To: 1. Cover your surface with wax paper. 2. Using your hot glue gun, glue your button(s) of choice to the wooden spools to create your stamp. 3. Light the wick on your wax stick and let it melt down. As it starts to melt, let the wax drop onto your wax paper surface in a circular shape. Drop enough wax equivalent to the size of your stamp (one wax blob at a time). Allow wax to cool for a few seconds and then gently stamp. This may take a few tries to finesse. 4. Repeat step 3 as needed. 5. Once dry, peel your wax seals off of the wax paper. Use a glue dot to secure onto your envelope / object of choice. Note: you can also melt the wax directly onto your envelope for a more official sealing. If mailing, we recommend placing the wax-sealed envelope inside another envelope to ensure perfect delivery.

THE BACKYARD BARBARENO Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore Santa Barbara

Ingredients

Directions

½ oz (15 ml) Re-Find Handcrafted Vodka Paso Robles, California

1. Combine all ingredients except cilantro flowers in a cocktail shaker; shake vigorously to mix.

½ oz (15 ml) Ventura Orangecello Blood Orange Ventura, California

2. Strain into a rocks glass filled with ice. 3. Garnish with a few cilantro flowers.

2-½ oz (73 ml) fresh blood orange juice ½ oz (15 ml) farmers market fresh lime juice Barspoon of guava jalapeño preserves Mama’s Preserves, Arroyo Grande, California Cilantro flowers for garnish

The Backyard Barbareño (one of the extinct Chumash languages of the Santa Barbara area) takes its inspiration from Santa Barbara’s Spanish roots combined with its abundance of California fresh ingredients. The vodka is uniquely craft distilled from grapes (“from vineyard to bottle”) in the adjacent wine producing region of Paso Robles. The resulting creation? A refreshing, citrusy cocktail that’s a little bit sweet and a little bit spicy, with just the right amount of tang. The rocks glass was carefully chosen to showcase the drink’s striking color and garnishes with delicate and simple lines.
