UP IN STOKE

EARLIER IN THE YEAR CASEY RIPPER EXPLORED THE CHASE FOR STOKE ALONG THE EAST-COAST OF AUSTRALIA, SEARCHING AN ESCAPE FROM THE "HOAX-COAST" ALL WORDS AND IMAGES CASEY RIPPER

my name is Casey Ripper and I'm a eigteen year old photographer residing on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. Since graduating year 12 last year i've since gained my license, a full time job i enjoy and a stoke for surfing that is stronger than eveWr. The life i live at my home in Noosa is perfect; i get to surf every weekend, spend time with my good mates, and work a job that pays well for an unqualified teen. This perfect lifestyle, however, does get repetitive, and every now and then i love to escape the "hoax coast" and go wave hunting at places ive never been. These little trips are usually just weekend roadtrips, but i've wanted to do a big trip for years, i took two weeks off (which was hard to get considering the amount of time I've been working there) from my full-time and planned this trip far in advance unlike usual. Since moving from South Coast NSW in 2009 i've yearned to go back and see my friends, so this was the perfect opportunity, and it also happens to have some of the best waves in Australia. It was a struggle to find good riders and a filmer to take, which came as a surprise, but eventually my mate

Matthieu Glemarec, a filmer, jumped on board. Matthieu's mate and school's IT guy caught word of the trip and asked if he could come, I'd never met him but heard he surfs well so he joined us. Julian's roommate Sean Goldthorpe was keen so he also came along, he was between civil construction jobs and had a few weeks to kill. Departing on the 27th of June we packed my Camry wagon and began the drive to Julian's Dad's place in Coffs Harbour. We had hoped that one of the few good waves around Coffs would be working but everywhere was crap, so we only stayed the one night. We were awake by 3am the next morning and on the road to Cronulla primarily to surf Shark Island. We arrived at 11am with the winds light and the waves 2-3ft, starving yet frothing out we went straight out for a few hours of fun barrels and learning about the surge that is Shark Island. After a decent feed while watching the island, then we went and scoped out some other spots, then scoped out accomodation for the night. A backpackers close by was the only option and after a shit nights sleep in a smelly, crammed and foreign room we bailed and checked the surf. Nowhere was worth surfing so we decided to head south.

I had organised earlier on to buy an SPL water housing for my Canon 50D in Port Kembla, by lunchtime I had picked it up and the boys were keen to surf, however the ocean was close to flat so we knew no surfing would be done that day. A quick look on Wotif and we'd found our accomodation for the night; a hotel in Kiama worked out to be cheaper than the shithole of a backpackers the night before, nicer and of 50 rooms we were one of two rooms occu-

pied. That afternoon was spent checking out the beautiful town of Kiama, turns out the blow hole is quite amusing when a big plank of wood of placed over it haha. That night we had a good feed and went through footage of the day, easily the funniest night of the trip. The next was a Saturday the 30th, the day we were to check into the house we were to rent for a week, we drove a couple hours south of Kiama and checked in to the big double storey house.
