WELCOME Well hello!

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the very special Flux Collective 2012 Bumper Edition Magazine - which is also available as a Rich Media iPad Magazine via the iTunes App Store. Within this issue you will find a treasure trove of past Flux Webzine issues, designer artwork that we couldn’t fit in the regular webzines, as well as some brand new content. The Flux team has also included a little bit of information about themselves, a peek into their psyches and a few hints for what will be happening in Flux Collective throughout 2013.

Over the last six months Flux Webzine has gained a number of supporters, which we would like to express our sincere thanks to.

These people include all of our contributors, from industry as well as universities, other Brisbane-based creative groups such as Design Montage and Incstamp, and educational institutions that have helped to promote our work such as QCA and Qantm. Without your support Flux Webzine simply would not be.

So make a cup of tea and take some time out to explore this, our final issue for the year. We hope you enjoy it.

Neisha Phillips, founder and Creative Director at boutique Brisbane studio Creative Emporium, makes the world a more beautiful place. That sounds like a bold statement, but when you see the result of her expertise in design and Letterpress printing, you are sure to agree.

A visit to Creative Emporium makes Letterpress lovers drool. The workspace is covered in stunning tactile designs, vintage printing accessories, and the odd sausage dog motif. Neisha is passionate about sharing ideas and knowledge with clients and peers, and shares a little about herself here for you.

over them to freshen up my mind. I found an old Brisbane Railways tram ticket that inspired my business card design and a 1940s engineering book of hydraulic plans and other such drawings, along with the letterpress, inspired the direction of the Creative Emporium branding.

1. What was your first design job?

Work and study hard, pay attention to the small details, spell check and look for work experience to build on your skills and gain practical experience outside of study hours. Importantly, don’t be afraid to ask questions when you are stuck, you are learning and your teachers, bosses or industry mentors are there to help!

Working in a little print shop on the Sunshine Coast during my last year of uni. It was voluntary work experience and I learnt a lot about production, printing and specialty print finishes. This was my first introduction to the Heidelberg Platen which was at that time used for die cutting and invoice numbering rather than letterpress.

2. What is your career highlight so far?

Starting my own business and watching it grow gives me great satisfaction.

3. What or who inspires you?

Many things inspire me! Something new gets filed away in my mind each day when I read design blogs or attend an industry event. I have always loved art, namely Michelangelo and Picasso and even drawings by Leonardo da Vinci and I collect old books and random bits old of paper and posters etc so I find that if I am stuck for some inspiration I am often pouring

Working for myself and running my own studio.. oh yeah that’s right I am already doing that!! Hmm, next dream job.. not sure, after-all, what could beat graphic design and letterpress!

Martin is a recent design graduate from the Queensland College of Art, graduating with a Bachelor of Design with a major in Communication Design. With a passion for branding and typography, Martin enjoys using his skills as a designer to create unique and sometimes quirky resolutions for clients. He enjoys travelling, recently returning from Europe where he shamelessly cried seeing his first Paul CĂŠzanne painting up close and personal. A fine artist at heart and go-getter in spirit, he loves creating objects that people can enjoy and share. His dislikes include Helvetica, horrible kerning and writing biographies. He finds it awkward.

Erin Smith is an artist/illustrator with a distinct style. Born in Brisbane, Australia, Erin travelled to Melbourne to carry out a degree in Graphic Design. It was during her studies, that the fascination with typography really began. This penchant for type and words, however, stems from a deeper interest in linguistics. Using individual letters Erin builds new images in response to the deconstruction, creating a visual journal exploring the idea that words can have many different meanings.

Smith has exhibited works throughout Australia, Europe and the UK. Erin lives in a small wooden house, her dog’s name is Mr Shuffles and he is rad. She loves the beach, spending time with friends and her girlfriend. Erin dreams of being paid in retro pink iced buns for her work – as they are the greatest!

1. How did you get started in your art form?

When I was studying, I was very interested in typography – we were set a brief to create an image using Letraset. I then thought about doing it digitally.

Everyone inspires me – I love speaking with people that do what they love – I find it inspiring when people take a leap of faith and just go for it.

Waking up and creating things for people.

6. Do you have any advice for budding digital artists?

Just go for it. Put heaps of time into your skills and research. Listen and learn from other people and enjoy what you do.

Initially I write thoughts, then take these passages of text into illustrator, break them into shapes and create the images from there. Some images are purely digital others are printed then completed by hand.

3. What is your career highlight so far?

I’m not too sure. I guess it always blows me away when people like my work, so I would say anytime I come across someone who likes the work it is a highlight for me.

Shaun is a graphic designer who has tried his hand at many trades, including automotive mechanics and cadastral surveying. When he’s not working away at completing his Bachelor of Design or planning events with Australian Graphic Design Association (AGDA) Queensland Student council, he’s in the outdoors cycling or visiting his family on North Stradbroke Island, where he grew up. His passions in the area of design fall into the technical categories, typography, layout and print design, specifically letterpress printing. Shaun endeavours to produce the most appropriate outcomes using the least amount of design and materials, in the most suitable mediums. He holds a Diploma of Graphic Design and is now completing his degree, with a focus in Socially Responsive Communication.

BRISBANE 2012

Earlier this year Flux Collective attended the annual Semi-Permanent Event at the Brisbane Convention Centre and, as usual, the day was filled with interesting speakers, inspiration and general enjoyment. This year’s speakers included artistic entrepeneurs from a variety of disciplines, some of whom provided valuable insight into the industry, their creative processes, and some helpful advice for those starting out in design and other creative media. If you didn’t get to the event, here are some highlights…

BEASTMAN. Best known as a street artist, but not at all comfortable with that title, Beastman has been heavily influenced over the years by skate culture, and the magazines, layout, and photography that accompany it. After studying graphic design he focused on his own artform, painting odd household items, pizza boxes (one eventually sold for $80!), whatever he could find that spoke to him. He soon developed his signature style which now makes use of bold colours, patterns, symmetry, repetition, and street art-inspired linework. His process begins with sketching thumbnails to develop his concept and composition. He then creates

a final sketch on his chosen medium before adding colour and finishing the piece off with linework. A self-professed perfectionist, his artwork is hand-rendered from start to finish and requires a great degree of accuracy and patience, using rulers, compasses, masking tape, and a very steady hand to achieve his beautiful results. His advice is simple: “paint as neat as possible with every stroke”.

BEC ORPIN. Graphic designer and illustrator, Bec Orpin shared a timeline of her career and presented some simple advice to an attentive audience. A Fashion Design dropout, Bec eventually found her form as an Illustrative textile designer, and later graphic designer, and has had work commissioned by big names including Mambo, Sportsgirl, Kit Cosmetics, Melbourne City and Visa Japan.

Her advice?

• Learn to design outside of computers • Get involved in things you love • In the start, say yes to everything • Travel • Get some business skills

TOBY + PETE. Collaboration was a significant theme in the presentation by Toby + Pete, a generalist multi-media studio in Sydney, with clients worldwide. As a collective they have the ability to undertake all forms of design, digital imaging and CGI, illustration, interactive media and motion graphics, and a look through their portfolio can make one’s jaw drop. Some of their clients include Hahn Super Dry, Daily Juice, P&O and New Zealand Icecream, Bundaberg Rum and Parklife. They present themselves as “specialists with generalist interests”, and allude to trends in the industry where studios are wary of ‘generalists’ who spread themselves thinly over a variety of skill sets. They feel that collaboration is key in the current market, but are aware that finding the right mix of people can sometimes be a challenge.

They believe they have been lucky in their collaborations, but stated that at such a professional level there are no members that appear lazy or let the team down in other areas – they would not have made it that far with work practices like that.

Their advice for successful collaboration: • Find the right people (and don’t rush in) • You must be able to trust these people, and have trust in their designs and work practices • Develop a culture of respectful honesty – everyone must have the ability to give and receive honest feedback.

BEC WINNEL. Bec Winnel, self-taught artist and commercial illustrator, is a shy woman and self-professed hermit who loves to be nowhere more than at home in the country drawing by herself, with her dog Olive by her side. She made the transition from hobby illustrator to working commercial freelancer by first putting all of her artwork on Etsy.com, blogging about her work, entering competitions and sending in work to businesses that she liked. She now does Fashion illustration for a variety of overseas Fashion labels, has done work for Cleo magazine, and Element, and has recently collaborated with Brisbane-based studio Design Front on marketing for the Sleeping Beauty Ballet. Her creative process begins by making a collage in photoshop, using stock images or original photography. This is simply to get a workable reference image from which to begin illustration. She then sketches, adds colour gradually, and – if for commercial use – scans at 600dpi into photoshop, where she refines the image further, tweaking colour if necessary.

She shared some practical advice with the audience: • Enter competitions • Seek opportunities online • Write a blog • Submit your work to magazines • Have positive role models • Charge what you’re worth • Being your own worst critic can be a good thing • Allow yourself 2 “artist hissy fits” per year, where self doubt and insecurity can make you feel lost and hopeless – but push through it!

Yarron Frauenfelder is the graphic designer and art director of his own design studio; This is Neu. Yarron was born on the Sunshine Coast and began working for himself in 2008. Since then he has built up a wide-range of clients, including nightclubs, record labels, the mining industry, city council projects, professional organisations and boutique small business.

Yarron completed studies at both QUT and Shillington Design College – where he has since guest lectured. Yarron is currently working and travelling through Europe, however he recently took part in the Terrible Twos Brisbane event and was part of ‘SHOOT, an art tribute to all things Photography’ at the Antonia Kelly gallery, Kangaroo Point on 5th October 2012. As a child, Yarron was fascinated with posters, comics, animation and video games – which led him to his career in Graphic Design.

1. What was your first design job?

My first design job was working for a beverage company in-house, creating point-of-sale advertising and marketing documents. It was a fairly typical affair, but it did help me build industry experience straight out of university. After a brief stint I returned to study, where I gained more practical experience and a professional looking folio to start showing clients.

2. What is your career highlight so far?

Deciding to work for myself was a big step that I have enjoyed immensely. Its not always the easiest career path, but it does give you more freedom over the work, clients and hours you keep. It’s more than being a designer, it includes marketing, finance, workflows and organising, but when it comes down to the work its nice to look back and see what you have achieved.

3. What or who inspires you?

My inspiration comes from art, nature, music, blogs and film. More recently, traveling to Berlin has stimulated the creative mind. During ‘Berlin Art Week’ I managed to attend museum and art exhibitions frequently. Even walking down the art filled streets can fill the camera roll in moments.

4. What is your dream job?

I am fortunate enough to feel like I may have already obtained that one.

I have plans to advance the business, build new partnerships with clients and keep evolving my design work; but keeping creative and building a business seems like the perfect dream job.

5. Do you have any advice for juniors?

Experiment and play with different styles and approaches to your work. Keeping a collection of personal projects will show initiative and passion for design, it will freshen your mind and allow you to explore concepts/ideas that you may not get to work on with client work. Also, producing good work for clients is the best way to get them talking positively to other potential employees. You never know who is looking at your next piece of work - so make sure it hits the mark.

Wick founded Salt in 2002, using office space at his local church south of Perth, and designing the church’s newsletters and marketing material to get started.

He developed a family of creative service brands, including Saltprint which has became a national success providing an easy to use web to print system for SME and design agencies. Other members of the Salt family include Saltmedia for web design and marketing, and a creative co-working space Salt House in central Brisbane. A recent addition to the mix is Sprinkl, a grass-roots networking event for creatives. Wick is currently engaged to be married soon, and he has five kids between two houses in Brisbane and Perth. He flies between the states every month which he says may seem chaotic, but in reality it works like a well-oiled machine. The mix of city and suburban life gives balance.

1. What was your first design job?

I was an artwork slave for a jigsaw puzzle company. It wasn’t quite design, but it felt good to be getting paid for pushing pixels.

Don’t wait for a better computer, software or bigger design studio opportunities to become the designer you want to be.

Launching Salt House, our creative co-working space in Brisbane where we share our studio with other creatives and freelancers.

In brand design which I spend most of my time, its feelings and ideas that inspire my design. Music and coffee also get my creative juices flowing.

Idea boy. I would just come up with ideas all day, and the ideas would be farmed and

Ash is in her final year of a Bachelor of Creative Media, majoring in Graphic Design at Qantm College. She has been working as a freelance designer/ illustrator/photographer since 2010. Ash’s favourite aspects of the creative industries would be photography and illustration she recently completed a project which involved completing photographic illustrations of memorable musicians from the twenty-seven club. Ash also enjoys pina colada’s, getting caught in the rain (she genuinely does) and talking about herself in third person.

Becki Kenworthy is in her third and final year studying Visual Communication Design and Photography at the Queensland College of Art. Her passion for keeping the printed method alive is one of the key reasons she created Occult Zine, an independent, Brisbane based, free, street-publication all about advocating for creative types and showcasing their skills. Becki spends most of her time either experimenting with different types of photography, film and digital, exploring all the exciting new parts of Brisbane, taking in as much live music as possible and using all of these things as inspiration for Occult.

Becki spent 6 months in the UK and Europe last year, which inspired and helped her to be a better, more motivated and openminded designer.

STATE OF FLUX [COLLECTIVE] 6 months | 9 Webzines | 1 website | 32 contributors | 2000+ views.

This has been the Flux Collective existence since July this year. We’ve met some very talented designers, made some new friends with similar goals, and have had wild plans for Flux’s future. We have ADMIREd, CREATEd, CONTRIBUTEd and (hopefully) INSPIREd. The collective experiences we’ve had over the past six months have given us new hopes, and a slightly new direction for Flux in 2013. We have reflected over what we have created so far, and taken a closer look at the Flux Collective core principles. What we found at the foundation of our group was a sincere yearning to CREATE and to CONTRIBUTE. It also became evident that we all hoped that through our creativity we could be able to make some sort of small positive contribution to society.

And so, at a time when many students are winding down for the year, Flux Collective is busy brainstorming a way to build a practical platform that will allow us to achieve our humble new goal.

We don’t want to give too much away just yet, but we would like to present to you with the [new] Flux Manifesto.

Jenica Smith is the founder, creator and writer of Design Montage - a creative hub for artists, illustrators, designers, photographers and animators. Currently studying for her Masters of Digital Design at Griffith Uni QCA, Jenica has been an active designer in advertising and marketing agencies for 12 years. In June 2012, she was named 1 of 4 Finalists for the Emerging Design Leader award in Queensland’s Smart Design Awards. More recently Jenica has participated in the Terrible Twos exhibition with emerging designer Hanna Mathilde and presented a talk to the students at Brisbane’s Shillington College. Jenica’s creative sidekicks at home are her staffies Bonnie and Junior, who keep her feet warm under the desk whilst working crazy hours.

1. What was your first design job?

Be curious. It’s all too easy to fall into a rhythm and forget to ask yourself if there’s a better solution.

At 16 I landed a traineeship with Brisbane advertising agency, Publicis Mojo. I started out watching and learning from the experienced designers in the art studio.

After finishing school, I continued to help the studio when needed for deepetching products for adverts and catalogues.

Sometimes I’d just go and get the muffins and coffee for everyone – watching and absorbing how things worked in a busy studio was a great learning curve.

In amongst this I started studying Creative Industries in Communication Design and Advertising at QUT. Once I completed my degree (and after hanging around long enough), I was fortunate to continue at Mojo on a full time basis on the mainstream clients at the time. Some of these included Bank of Queensland, Mack Trucks, Golden Casket, Instant Scratch-Its and the Brisbane Writers Festival.

2. What is your career highlight so far?

Creating Design Montage, which has become an integral part of my life as a designer. And also, being named a finalist for the Emerging Design Leader category in this

I am inspired by so many different things...

Gorgeously printed, foiled or embossed paper, hearing inspiring stories, conversations about creativity and design. And I love reading biographies of people who’ve achieved incredible things in their lives.

4. What is your dream job?

There’s no doubt I love to talk. And those who’ve met me realise that pretty quickly. Talking about design, sharing and discussing ideas is my dream role. Design Montage is definitely allowing me the freedom to do this, and who knows where it will take me!

5. Do you have any advice for juniors?

Be persistent with yourself and getting your start in the industry. You’ll be surprised at what you think will be your dream job and where you’ll actually end up.

And in the same way you work creatively, you might need to go on a few different tangents before you realise what path you should be on.

Jasmine Holm is a recent graphic design graduate from Brisbane with a love for all things creative. Being a conceptual thinker with a keen eye for detail, she enjoys working in multiple disciplines of design, illustration and photography. Jasmine is constantly seeking inspiration and is heavily influenced by her surroundings. Pip has more than 18 years’ design experience specialising in brand identity and brand management, corporate and financial reporting and publication design for national and multi-national organisations including Mincom, Suncorp Metway, Energex, Stanwell, Cement Australia, Xstrata Copper and Alcan Engineering. In 2002, Pip established Lumino, one of Brisbane’s best known brand consultancies. In May 2012, Pip merged her studio with Rowland, bringing with her a team of highly qualified and experienced designers specialising in brand identity and implementation.

Pip has overseen many brand strategy and implementation projects including the name and Brand for Queensland Motorways free flow tolling project – Go Via and more recently the rebrand of Stanwell Corporation. Pip is a respected speaker on branding and regularly conducts brand seminars for start-up enterprises.

Among Pip’s favourite possessions are her Apple products, including her iPhone, iPod and iPad. Pip also loves eating pasta, even with nothing on it, but particularly with her favourite sauce Amatriciana, which she loves because it’s spicy! Lastly, Pip’s favourite gelati flavour is Coconut, simply because it’s “yum!”

1. What was your first design job?

My first design job was working at Artbusters Creative. It was an amazing introduction to the world of art and design with a mix of talented creatives working collaboratively on weird and wonderful projects. Artbusters created themed environments and large scale 3D artwork for World Expos, Large Retail Shopping Centres and Theme Parks.

2. What is your career highlight so far?

Building Lumino over 15 years to become one of Brisbane’s best known brand consultancies.

3. Who or what inspires you?

I am inspired by other design disciplines such as fine art, fashion, architecture and interior design. I am addicted to design and architecture magazines and am fascinated by the way other disciplines use colour, form and space.

4. What is your dream job?

To run a studio for a global company that specialises in creating and managing international brands.

5. Do you have any advice for juniors?

Never stop learning. Understand your clients business and brand from the inside out to ensure that your designs are relevant and on brand. Think beyond the brief – make sure that your work has depth of thought and meaning to elevate your work from good to exceptional.

What happens when typography obsessive Mish Stark and crafty graphic designer Julia van Hameren combine creative forces? This! The two had been wanting to collaborate on a project ever since Julia’s work was featured in an earlier issue of the webzine. “I loved Julia’s whimsical and feminine design style, and she seemed to like my original typefaces, so we made the time for a shared personal project”, shares Mish.

Julia loves craft and has recently been creating a series of stitched illustrations as a way to relax and express her creativity away from the computer. Mish needed a way to play around with typography in a different way than she is used to and felt that an element of craft would make for a soulful, hands-on challenge.

And so the two designers got to work on a small stitched typography project, incorporating their two

interests. A quick stitching lesson from Julia was all it needed to get Mish quickly keen on the craft. So, after planning their designs on screen, they visited Make it Hobby N Craft to stock up on supplies and began stitching.

“I was really excited to share my love of craft with a fellow designer and produce something that was typography heavy as a challenge from my normal pictorial embroidery” said Julia.

“I had no idea how therapeutic this process would be!” shared Mish, “It became something that I really enjoyed doing and I’d love to create more of this sort of thing in future.”

Mish and Julia have since collaborated on another stitched piece, which was on display at the recent IncStamp ‘Pint Sized’ exhibition earlier this month.

An energetic, calm and curious walking contradiction from Dutch and Persian heritage, Alex Naghavi is a Brisbanebased graphic designer and pop-culture junkie. Since majoring in Communication Design at the Queensland College of Art in 2007, Alex has worked on a smorgasbord of distinctive and engaging projects for Valley Fiesta, Made In The Now, EMI, We Are Hunted and Myspace, just to name a few. Alex designs with intent and prides herself on clever and functional design, frequently vanquishing seemingly insurmountable problems with simple yet bold solutions. Much like your grandma, Alex has a great fondness for handmade aesthetics and analogue photography, but unlike your nanna she merges these with modern design principles into a symbiotic amalgamation of old and new. By day Alex works at Brisbane digital design agency (and hipster-hub) Josephmark. By night, well, by night she often is still working, but when she isn’t, she is usually at the centre of raucousness, consuming food and or beverages with Holga in hand (that’s her camera, not her German girlfriend).

1. What was your first design job?

I started pretty early, designing commercial websites for my dad when I was in high school. I was fairly self-taught, but I’m pretty sure I was on a PC using CorelDraw... yep.

3. What or who inspires you?

Looking at things differently, and being surrounded by creative and interesting people. Oh and I would definitely choose a Ted talk over a design lecture any day.

4. What is your dream job?

Hrm... I would definitely love to be working on even bigger and more challenging projects; making increasingly meaningful work that has a positive impact on the world; and pushing boundaries and inspiring people. And I’d love nothing more than to keep doing this with the crazy talented kids at Josephmark and Breeder.

5. Do you have any advice for juniors?

Work hard, find your niche and don’t stop until you’re the best at it.

Hannah Cutts came to Australia when she was just 18. She’d been accepted into Sussex Uni to study modern literature but got kicked out of the English education system because of badly timed parent migration. Since Brisbane didn’t really offer an English lit BA, Hannah chose to study Architecture. She left after 2 years to start up a T-Shirt screen-printing company, before finally returning to study visual arts with a major in illustration. Throughout the duration of the course Hannah won awards and gained contracts with Macmillan and a magazine called The Independent. Cutts creative began in 1995 and has worked for big and little companies alike. They have had lots of staff and few staff. Work has been fun and exciting and shit and boring.

That’s life and work... but Hannah wouldn’t change it.

1. What was your first design job?

Semper Magazine at UQ in 1987. My first paid creative job was as an illustrator; Macmillan kids books and the Independent.

My first paid design job on a computer was probably in 1996 the Livid Festival Program. We also did our first branding job for a nightclub called Grand Orbit in 1996 and then looked after all of their design work from wine labels, ads in every publication going, drink tickets, invites to Melrose Place nights - it was a strange but exotic year and we won a judges award for the Grand Orbit wine labels. We were very lucky and seemed to attract a swathe of clients who were happy to have fun.

2. What is your career highlight so far?

I really enjoyed working on the Urbane branding and environmental graphics - again, a group of clients who wanted to be surprised and experiment. Urbane expanded from one restaurant to 4. We helped name the other 3; The Laneway (a bar cantilevered over the laneway below), subUrbane (a downstairs functions room with old stone walls) and The Euro (modern European food and tapas). For each venue we created a brand and then a suite of images that could be rolled out across all collateral and environmental graphics.

We created a fun and lewd illustration created by chopping up road signage for the Laneway and this became coasters, business cards, menus and even a 40mm thick 10m x 3m metal dividing screen.

3. Who or what inspires you?

Colours, art, humour, reaching an audience - that is ‘what’ inspires me. Clients or cohorts that want to get involved in any of the above - that is ‘who’ inspires me.

There are quite a few people that I quietly hero worship - Ralph Steadman, Dr Seuss, George Orwell and Aldous Huxley. Anyone that can design and actually produce anything that makes it to market and stays there. Designers like Easton and Pearson are to be applauded for having the guts to create beautiful clothes that cross the line between art and fashion, in our own uptight backyard.

4. What is your dream job?

I am trying to work that one out at the moment and the great thing is...I haven’t.

That means that I am not yet yearning for something I can’t have. Saying that though, I collect art (I am in the midst of cataloguing the collection on pinterest. com/hannahcutts/cutts-art-collection/) and a complete dream job would be buying art and collectables for other people. “Here’s the budget; here are the walls...have fun!”

5. Do you have any advice for juniors?

Relax, have fun and learn - have a look at Darth and Roger. Don’t expect to know what and where you want to be until you have to.

Matt is co-founder and Creative Director of Left, Right & Centre, a Brisbane based design and development company. A small and perfectly formed group of designers and developers, Left Right & Centre offer a healthy mix of thoughtful and relevant creative, cutting-edge technology and strategic thinking. Clients range from cultural, educational and charity organisations to government departments, multinationals and start-ups. Since graduating from Central Saint Martins, London in the mid 90s, Matt has worked for design agencies in both in Australia and the UK. Upon moving to Brisbane in 2007 Matt took the plunge and set up his freelance practice OK Creative, culminating in the formation of LRC in 2010 with two other like-minded freelancers. Outside of design, Matt, a proud Welshman, loves being run ragged by his young family and riding bicycles. Needless to say he sleeps well at night...

1. What was your first design job?

My first full-time ‘proper’ design job was with a small multimedia firm in near Waterloo Station in London. I was the sole designer creating interface designs for CD ROM titles built using Director (showing my age!). It was a fantastic time to be living and working in London and being exposed to early new media work. As I was the only designer there I was often free to do as I pleased which gave me plenty of opportunity to experiment with graphic and interaction design. My college studies took me in quite abstract directions and my final portfolio didn’t have much of a commercial focus so the job gave me the opportunity to build up a portfolio and get the first year of experience under my belt.

2. What is your career highlight so far?

Working for myself was always something that I wanted to do so setting up as a freelance designer, and the consequently setting up Left, Right & Centre, has been great. I enjoy a challenge so running our own shop - on our own terms - provides them on a daily basis.

3. What or who inspires you?

It sounds corny but clients provide a lot of inspiration, and often in ways that may not be immediately obvious. I get a great deal of satisfaction working through the issues, aims and expectations of a client and devising the relevant, challenging and interesting solutions.

4. What is your dream job?

Hmm tough one...I have always really enjoyed working on arts projects particularly festivals. It is something that I have done quite a bit of in the past but not so much since moving to Brisbane, we will definitely be looking to work with some more arts organisations in 2013. I have always loved riding bikes so getting to work on something that mixes my passions for cycling and design is always great. I have designed cycling kits for the group I ride with which is always great - it is rewarding to ride out with a group of mates all wearing the fruits of your labour...I could keep going...

5. Do you have any advice for juniors?

Brisbane has a really inspiring crop of young designers coming through at the moment, it is fantastic to see the initiative and inventiveness they have for getting out there and making things happen - whether it is setting up a small publishing venture, or creating inspiring events. I work with students as part of my role on the Queensland AGDA Council and have be fortunate to work with some really motivated and passionate young designers - so my advice: push yourself and get amongst it.

One of Brisbane’s emerging designers, Brendan Surtees, has a particular penchant for photography and photo-manipulation, as well as having some pretty great graphic design skills. He is currently in his final year of a Bachelor of Creative Media (Graphic Design). Brendan is a shy kind of guy. He is rarely seen anywhere but behind his beloved Canon EOS 1000D or head down at his MacBook Pro. And this isn’t such a bad thing, because he creates some beautiful images.

Julian Hutton moved from Toowoomba to Brisbane in mid 2009 to study Graphic Design at SBIT. After graduating in mid 2011 he began work as a freelancer finding work in a variety of mediums.

At the beginning of 2012, Julian cofounded The Meander Journal, an online arts and culture publication featuring a range of people from all over the globe.

Currently he’s working full time as a graphic designer at Perle Creative in Red Hill and runs The Meander Journal in his spare time. Julian has a fascination with typography, photography and the written word. IncStamp formed because of a desire to create and show our own work to friends and family. Having all transitioned from uni to work where the briefs are more restrictive, we needed another outlet to express our creative freedom. The IncStamp committee members learn something new every exhibition whether it is from making a mistake, working with another committee member with a different skill set or responding to an exhibiting artist’s feedback. We’ve gained skills in communication, sourcing a venue, PR, social media, lighting and hanging and of course developing our own art. What became an opportunity for us is also the same for other emerging artists, illustrators, photographers and designers. We have just completed our sixth exhibition since starting in 2011. It was our biggest to date with nearly twice the number of exhibiting artists than our previous shows and was the tightest time frame we have worked in to organise an exhibition, yet we were all unquestionably confident that it would be a success - and it was! You could say it is proof that IncStamp is growing and we are growing with it.

After graduating from a bachelor of design at QCA I have worked for NonGovernment Organisations where, although not employed specifically as a graphic designer, I have been able to use the skills learnt in my degree. I also freelance mainly designing business collateral. I really like the illustration side of design and IncStamp gives me an opportunity to work on illustration projects that work doesn’t. I love that we can provide opportunities not only for up and coming designers to show their work but one that allows them to look at design as an art practice.

Jess didn’t always know she wanted to be a designer. In her final year of high school her art teacher said she had good ‘composition’ so she took a short course during holidays. Fast forward six years and with a degree from Queensland College of Art under her belt she has discovered that Design is a whole lot more than just ‘composition’. Jess now works as graphic designer on the Northside and loves to complete various illustrations during her free time. Not wanting to slow down and miss an opportunity, along with her friends she helps plan IncStamp exhibitions, enter design comps and is currently taking a copywriting course.

From an early age, I suppose I’ve always been interested in art. I used to draw a lot when I was younger, and I guess that’s really helped me to develop my skills along the years. During high school, I didn’t see much of a career as a fine artist, so I decided to take the path of a graphic designer instead; this allowed me to combine my love of creativity and computers.

After graduating from QCA with a Bachelor of Design in Visual Communication, I decided to pursue full-time work within the IT industry in order to gain more technical experience, and eventually this would hopefully help me get my foot in the door to become a web designer/developer in the near future. At the moment, I’m still working in IT and in addition taking in small client projects and drawing commissions on the side.

Laura Strange is an artist and designer based in Brisbane. Her life is currently a juggle between her full-time position as a Designer at Lloyd Grey Design a highly respected Brisbane-based branding and strategy firm and her own personal projects. Laura started her creative journey with a job as a broadcast designer for Channel Seven and undertaking a Bachelor of Design at Griffith University College of Art where she scored the Best Portfolio award upon graduation.

After completing her degree, Laura was a founding member of the artist run initiative IncStamp a project that has massively influenced the direction of her personal projects throughout 2012. Throughout 2011 & 2012, she has exhibited work in 11 group shows including I Used to Skate Once 8, the Kiss Cut sticker show and the Imagesetter and Neon Pop shows at Bleeding Heart Gallery with another two being held before the end of 2012. She has also recently just released her first collection of necklaces under her soon-to-be-launched artful objects label, Strange Stranger.

Her true passions lie in branding, where she believes strongly that the process should follow the Bauhaus notion of form follows function, and art, where she draws inspiration from the everyday and explores ways to fuse design principles with fine art techniques and evolving technology. She is a sweet-tooth, a romantic, and (as most designers) a caffeine addict.

When Vaimiti visited Australia for the first time at age 10, she instantly fell in love with sunny Queensland. So when she finished high school, she decided to leave Tahiti to study in Brisbane. She has always loved art and drawing according to her dad, she went through quite a few kilos of pencils so she went on to study visual communication at the Queensland College of Art. This is where she met the neat people that would eventually start Incstamp with her. After her bachelor, she studied a masters of digital design, where she specialised in motion graphics.

Having just completed a Bachelor of Creative Media (Graphic Design), Julia enjoys swooning over luxurious stationary designs and paper craft. Although she has a passion for graphic design, Julia’s ultimate goal is to design wedding stationary or be a children’s book illustrator. Her first greatest achievement in design was winning a contest at high school where her creation became the logo and t-shirt design of the school play. When she isn’t working or studying Julia loves anything crafty; scrapbooking, embroidery, sewing, quilting, painting and anything DIY, she does it all. Dani Hunt is a digital artist and designer with an enchanted, whimsical and geometric approach to her work. This might sound like an odd mix, but the end result is fresh and funky artwork that captures the viewer’s imagination, taking them on a visual adventure that’s anything but typical.

bespoke bicycle frames was definitely a highlight, as it brought with it the opportunity to mingle with some big names in the UK design scene and have my work featured alongside theirs. It was a great little high!

Founder of creative agency Neverland Studio, Dani spends her days converting big ideas into exciting graphics and creating bold artistic prints. Prior to launching her own creative platform, Dani honed her style designing for the music and fashion scenes, before taking her work overseas.

Basing herself out of London and then Amsterdam, Dani travelled the globe to expand her skillset and soak up inspiration from a variety of unique cultures, returning to Australia with a renewed passion for all things design and texture.

Travel is my main source of inspiration; sights, sounds & experiences from across the globe all play a part in my work. I’m also hugely inspired by vintage design, fashion photography, geometry and the work and ideas of surrealist artists, such as Dali.

Born to an overly artistic and slightly stircrazy mother who had her gluing, stitching, drawing and painting from the moment she left the womb, Dani has always lived in the creative realm and as the years have passed, her passion for all things ‘art’ has only evolved further.

1. What was your first design job?

My very first industry gig was as a junior designer at a local advertising agency. I’d just graduated and was really eager to dip my feet into the design world, but quickly realised corporate design just wasn’t for me. It wasn’t long before I began looking for a role with more opportunity for creativity and flair. Creating straightforward logos and doing text layout just didn’t inspire me – I love working with brands that are open to creative suggestion and want to make a big (arty) impression!

3. What or who inspires you?

4. What is your dream job?

In my heart of hearts, I see myself as an artist, so my absolute dream would be to create commission pieces for big brands that value creativity. To have my original artwork adorning a huge billboard in the middle of Times Square... now that would be amazing!

I’d love to be on the books’ of a creative agency such as The Jackie Winter Group, or Just Another Agency… that’s the goal!

5. Do you have any advice for juniors?

Absolutely! Define your individual style as much as possible, then fill your portfolio with projects that flaunt it!

WHO ARE WE? MEET THE PEOPLE BEHIND FLUX COLLECTIVE

Flux Collective began when 3 college friends - Mish, Ben & Jeremy - were presented with the opportunity to have 6 months of creative freedom to work on a shared project. We all wanted to use the time to contribute something of value to a fresh and vibrant local industry that had inspired us. We realized that the principles we all shared were an admiration of local designers, a yearning to create and to be able to somehow use our creativity to contribute something of value. Our main hope is that we can inspire other designers to keep creating and contributing in their own ways.

Here at Flux Collective, we are very excited to be welcoming a fourth Flux member to the team for 2013. As 2012 comes to an end, we thought it was an apt time to reveal a little bit about ourselves and to introduce our newest team member.

Ben Smith is a graphic designer with a keen interest in magazine and publication design. 2012 has seen Ben co-found Flux Collective, design and publish Flux Webzine and complete a degree in Graphic Design. Ben also recently completed an internship at local magazine publisher, Graphic Publishing. Not only did he find the internship to be a great experience but it also resulted in his first major career milestone; having his name printed in the credits of both “Queensland Brides” and “Queensland Homes” magazines. As a result of this experience, Ben hopes to become a magazine designer, creating high quality designs across a range of publishing platforms that enhance the visual experience and functionality of a magazine’s design. In his spare time Ben is an avid fan, collector and general obsessor of Kylie Minogue. A hobby which frequently crosses over into his work, often finding himself inspired by her music, her elaborately-visual concerts, the design of her products and just Kylie herself. Ben also enjoys watching television, movies and those rare moments of relaxation. He is often told that he is tall, insanely-organised and works too hard.

Art addict, coder, philosopher, idealist, optimist and class clown. I like to refer to myself as one’s self to annoy people but more importantly it makes me sound smarter than I am. I believe that design should be natural and unadulterated, I like working towards the emotions people experience when they interact with design.

I think that those subtle feelings and initial thoughts are what make the design original, since everything is just a remake of our worldviews and experience. I hope to master this one-day, closing the gap between communication and design.

After moving from Brisbane to Sydney in early 2012, Shannon spent the rest of the year completing a Bachelor of Creative Media (Graphic Design) at Qantm College.

A Love for layout and an interest in finding out how individuals express themselves creatively lead to the beginnings of Winsome Journal. Focusing on independent creative projects, Winsome Journal is a catalogue of the creative, innovative and curious. Shannon uses the digital journal to expand her graphic design, written and photographic skill sets, while gaining a deeper understanding of creative ideas and styles. As a graphic designer, Shannon didn’t initially realise she had a particular style to her work. But recently she has begun to notice that her personal designs often incorporate block colours and a rough, hand rendered aesthetic. Aside from Winsome Journal, Shannon collaborates with independent, histrionic filmmaker Emma Gover, in designing titles for Emma’s short films. Shannon has a secret passion for marketing, and in her freelance work, loves designing logos and collateral with a focus on how they will be implemented.

Recently, Shannon learnt how to use a Risograph printer at a short course. She loved the tactile nature of the prints and the often-temperamental nature of the printer. In her spare time, Shannon likes to tinker with her camera, often shooting studio portraits, people and objects in every day situations. Shannon is most content when she is working on a design project, on her patio with a chai tea in hand.
