EDITORIAL Petri Heil, The days are getting longer and many of you have started dreaming about your fishing adventures in the upcoming season. What a great time. Everything is ahead of us. Again we have chosen to present a selection of our products in a magazine combined with articles that we hope will inspire you to go out and explore the amazing world of fly-fishing. We have many product introductions that you see in this magazine and it´s difficult to pick only a few. I´ll still want to mention the new Scott Meridian rods who won “Best Saltwater Fly Rod” at IFTD/iCast in Orlando and that for the second time in the shows history secured a rod company the prestigious award “Best of Show”. Congratulations to Jim Bartschi and his team at Scott. Simms Fishing products won 7 awards at IFTD and 2 awards at iCast where fly-fishing normally does not win any prices. Congratulations to Brandan and his team of developers at Simms. You rock. Finally, I would like to congratulate Waterworks-Lamson with their 20th anniversary. I’m proud to say we have been partners with them since the beginning and its always great to see when people get what they deserve! We have added two brands to our portfolio since last time, C&F Design and TroutHunters. Both market leading products in their categories. Nordic vibes An unforgettable road trip through Norway

It’s hard to summarize a trip like this. Four danica dudes like us, five weeks, 6000 kilometers by car, many different locations and lots of great fishing. We met many great people, experienced some spectacular wildlife and all in all had more than just a great time!

It all started on a sunny Thursday morning in Munich, where we, Lukas and Kristof Reuther and Lukas Kirchgäßner and we waited in front of the school, that our fourth friend, Pablo, attends. With the car already packed up, we held on for him getting his final grades, ready to start our fiveweek trip to Norway. After a long drive through Germany we took the ferry from Rostock to Trelleborg, Sweden. Thanks to a sleepless night on the wavering ferry floor (that had nothing to do with a couple of beers), we wearily drove along the Swedish coastline with no destination in mind, just with the plan to stay one night in the general area north of Gothenburg. We ended up in the small but beautiful village of Lahälla. The typical red and white-colored houses gave us the first real holiday feeling and even though we had poor flyfishing for mackerel and sea-trout we enjoyed our first night in Sweden. The next day we hit the road again up north to the next location on the map where it seemed to be good to fish. After some hours of driving we arrived in Maerapanna, Norway. But the wind took up so heavily I was glad to have my thin Scientific Anglers sinking line and the fast Scott S4S in my hands, allowing me to reach an acceptable distance. With the right equipment we managed to hook some decent mackerel, pollock and cod that showed fairly strong resistance.

Bugged out from wind and some heavy rain we drove further north to visit Flyfish Europe near Oslo. The whole crew was very welcoming and gave us a look into the Simms show room and the very well-managed repair center, where every european-bought Simms wader gets repaired by a skilled team of four.

The fishing turned out not to be super bad but not as good as expected, and besides some larger grayling there was not much going on. The next days we prayed for better weather and soon received a positive answer from the mayfly god. By the end of the week we had good numbers of caddis and mayflies and the fish were in a good mood.

After a nice lunch we left Flyfish Europe with a lot of new knowledge about waders, the current fishing conditions in Norway and some gifts. Our next stop to the place Kristof was looking forward to the most in this trip, the Rena River.

We came in contact with local fishermen who generously gave us tips concerning fly patterns and locations which were very helpful.

It immediately felt like home for him when we arrived, as he had been to Rena before. Despite slow fishing conditions, he had spent some incredible days of fishing as well as meeting friends. The evening was easy planned. Buying the fishing license, putting up the tent, cooking dinner, building up the rods and going fishing. We seemingly hit it just right, as the season there started very late because of great amounts of snow, but didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t recognize great numbers of caddis dancing on the water.

The following two weeks we experienced gin-clear rivers, beautiful fish and stunning surroundings in the Hedmark and Femundsmarka region. Not mentioning any names, one should pay attention to some smaller rivers when following the GlĂĽma River course. The five weight Scott Radian and S4 were never an overkill for smaller-size fish but when we ran into some decent size fish in strong current they were really able to show their power.

But what is Norway without its magnificent fjords? Holding numerous hard fighting fish species that show great interest in artificial flies, high quality flyfishing is almost guaranteed. Unsurprisingly, we were thrilled to make our first casts in these wide waters from shore. And it didn’t take long…the tide was on our side and the fish in kind of a feeding frenzy. Good sized pollock, mackerel, cod and sea-trout soon got landed on the Scott S4S #6 and Tidal #8. These are the situations where it really makes a difference what kind of equipment you have. We were really happy with our choices as they were able to hold up to the enormous power of even the biggest pollock. In the end we counted nine species in the sea, furthermore guests like starfish and sea urchin, that rounded up a great saltwater experience. But there is always the day when you have to say goodbye and get back to your normal routine again. Driving home, memories from the last five weeks came flashing back and we weren’t really able to tell what we liked best, as every day seemed to be better than the one before, so guess what: We’re coming back…!

NEW AND IMPROVED G3 GUIDE™ JACKET THE EVOLUTION OF SIMMS G3 GUIDE™ JACKET CONTINUES. In 2004, Simms upped the ante with the release of the G3 Guide™ Jacket. Since that time, the G3 has become a staple amongst the guide community and hardcore anglers who refuse to let the conditions get in the way of their fishing. For 2015, the product team at Simms accomplished the task of taking this G Series favorite to a new level. When the original G3 Guide™ Jacket was released it was a fairly aggressive move for Simms. The goal was to create the most technical wading jacket on the market which resulted in an end product that was aesthetically much different than any other piece of Simms outerwear. “The initial goal of the G3 Guide™ Jacket wasn’t to create a wading jacket that addressed a different demographic, it was simply for the jacket to speak to super technical guides and anglers.” says Diane Bristol of Simms “We wanted the G3 Guide™ Jacket to be the next innovation in rain jackets. Compared to say the Guide™ Jacket, the G3 Guide™ Jacket had a super clean front, much lower profile and just an overall more progressive look.” Since 2004, there have been numerous iterations of the jacket, each surpassing its predecessor in terms of ruggedness and performance. WHAT IS THE GORE-TEX® FABRIC?

GORE-TEX® products are well known for providing long-lasting, comfortable weather protection you can trust on. But what exactly is the GORE-TEX® fabric? Is it a coating or an impregnation? An outer fabric or an inner textile lining? It’s none of those but all of the following: 1 It´s a membrane 1.

The GORE-TEX® membrane is at the heart of all GORE-TEX® products. Due to its microporous structure it has some amazing characteristics.

The GORE-TEX® membrane is an extremely thin layer of expanded polytetraflouroethylene (ePTFE). It has over 9 billion pores per square inch. It’s these pores that give the GORE-TEX® fabric its characteristics.

The pores are 700 times larger than a water vapor molecule which means perspiration passes right trough. This is what makes the GORE-TEX® membrane breathable.

WATERPROOF Wet fabrics rob your body of warmth. GORE-TEX® fabrics are durably waterproof, allowing you to stay dry and enjoy your activity in comfort. What does it mean? We believe waterproof products shouldn’t leak - and, what is more, that this quality is retained over the entire lifetime of the product. The durability of waterproofness is really what sets GORE-TEX® products apart. GORE-TEX® fabrics withstand water-entry pressures encountered during severe weather and in demanding applications. However, a product’s waterproof protection depends on more than just the fabric. That’s why all new GORE-TEX® product prototypes from our manufacturing partners are put though a battery of tests in our labs. Only if they meet our strict weatherproof performance standards are they approved for production in a Gore certified factory. Why is it important? Wet fabrics conduct heat 3 times faster than dry clothes, robbing your body of warmth. By keeping water out, our durably waterproof clothing system prevents this heat loss. As a result, you stay dry and comfortable, even during extended use, and in harsh conditions. WINDPROOF What does it mean? Although textiles like microfibers, closely woven fabrics, and many fleece materials are often considered windproof, even light winds can penetrate most of these fabrics, making you feel chilled and uncomfortable. In technical terms, a fabric can only be considered truly windproof if its air permeability is 1.0 cfm (volume of air that passes through one cubic foot of fabric in one minute) or less. All GORE-TEX® products meet or exceed this standard. Why is it important? As cold wind blows through your clothes, it causes convective heat loss, robbing you of the warmth kept in the thin layer of air between you and your clothing. GORE-TEX® fabrics prevent this windchill from happening by stopping the wind from passing through. The result – you preserve a comfortable microclimate inside your gear. BREATHABLE GORE-TEX® fabrics allow sweat to pass through and help reduce overheating and perspiration buildup. What does it mean? “Breathability” is one of the outdoor industry’s most misunderstood terms. It is not, as many believe, about a fabric’s ability to let air move through it, rather it refers to how well it lets your sweat escape in the form of moisture vapor. Our standards require that during heavy exertion our fabrics must breathe well enough to allow sweat to evaporate easily. Why is it important? When you’re active, your skin removes excess heat via perspiration. To avoid uncomfortable sweat buildup, the GORE-TEX® membrane allows the evaporating moisture to escape through the fabric. This breathability leads to more comfortable and drier skin, even during high exertion.

Gear Care

Users of GORE-TEX® know the importance of keeping for their garments. They also know that it is worth it in terms of what you get back. Clothes that resists cold and wet, regardless of what environments or contexts of use. By contributing to their Clothing’s long life, it also means something for the environment - ultimately it is thus a bet for all. To take care of your GORE-TEX® products has several advantages. If GORE-TEX® will keep its promise to always keep their customers dry it is required that those who have the clothes take care of them the best way. The result is a garment you can rely on long time plus a product with a long life is a win for the environment. In addition, the products are stylish and fresh. To wash your outerwear is the easiest and most important way for longer durability. Be sure to close all zippers before machine washing begins. Follow garment care label instructions, but generally GORE-TEX®’s outerwear feel best when washed at 40 C degrees with liquid detergent, FFE recommends ReviveX® fabric cleaner and not with heavily soiled laundry. DO NOT USE SOFTENER!

ReviveX® fabric cleaner

When it’s time for drying is recommended hang-drying or tumble dry on low heat. Just tumble drying product is important to you then re-enables the garment water repellent treatment, and if there is not the possibility you can also iron the outer garment. Place a towel or cloth between the iron and the garment and be careful. If you get it right, the water repellent treatment is reactivated. REMEMBER TO USE HEAT AND NO STEAM! NOTE! Do not tumble dry Waders. The Glue that attach the Neoprene foot don´t stand the heat. Use a hair dryer or Iron on GORE-TEX® garment. Is the garment so used to reading can not be reactivated, it is advisable to apply a new one. Use ReviveX® Durable Waterproofing to create or restore water, oil and stain repellency on all your favorite outerwear. Just spray this water-based formula on wet or dry garments, dry, and enjoy waterproof pants, jackets and rain gear again.

CAMILLE EGDORF

WITH ONLY TWO SEMESTERS TO GO, CAMILLE EGDORF IS GOING FROM COLLEGE TO CHRISTMAS ISLAND.

Growing up alongside the banks of the Bighorn River, Montana native, Camille Egdorf can’t remember a time when fishing wasn’t a part of her life. Even while balancing a full load of college courses, Egdorf still manages to log over 100 days on the water each year. With only two semesters in her college career to go, the 25 year old talks about her passion for fishing as well as the Simms gear that have become mainstays in her river kit.

So, how did you get into fishing and when did it all start? I owe it all to my dad. Some of my earliest memories are being on the water with him. From the very start, I always loved fish and begged to go and he always took me. Where do you primarily fish these days? Well, I was born and raised in Montana, so it’s no surprise I primarily fish here. I grew up on the Bighorn but because I currently live in Bozeman, I hit the Yellowstone, Gallatin, Madison, Jefferson and Missouri as often as I can. Do you have a favorite place to fish? My family owns and operates a guided trout lodge in Bristol Bay, Alaska on the Nushagak River. There’s no question that that’s my favorite place to fish. I spent every summer of my childhood there. I love it not just because it’s some of the best trout fishing in Alaska but also because it’s literally in the middle of nowhere and totally pristine. My only competition are the grizzly bears that roam the river banks searching for salmon. Are you a dry fly, streamer or nymph type gal? I have to admit, standing in a drift boat and crushing the bank with large streamers really pulls at my heart strings. Last December I hosted a group of anglers to Agua Boa Amazon Lodge and the style of fishing was very similar to how we streamer fish in Montana. Casting large streamers to the bank and stripping them back as fast as humanly possible. Fish would go absolutely nuts for your fly. I was in heaven. Any bucket list trips you have in mind for the future? If so, where? Kamchatka has been on my list for a long time and I’ll be fortunate enough to scratch that off in August, 2015. The main focus there will be mousing for large rainbow trout. I’m a mouse fishing addict so I’m really hoping to get my fix there. Another bucket list item is permit. I’ve never had the opportunity to pursue them but I’m hoping to pay Belize a visit in the near future.

Let’s talk about some of the Simms gear you’ve been using. Can you speak a little bit about the Women’s Guide Jacket? What makes it your jacket of choice?

The women’s guide jacket is great because it’s a jacket you can wear outside of the fishing environment. It’s not uncommon for me to wear it while walking down main street or to any social event. It’s not bulky, it has a great feminine fit and provides excellent protection from wind and rain. It’s a wonderful jacket and I can’t see myself using anything else. How are you liking the Women’s G3 Guide Waders? Before the Women’s G3’s came out, I wore the men’s G4 pro’s. Simply because I needed something that was durable enough to guide in Alaska during the summer and would keep me warm during the cold Montana winters. Even though they were a size small, they were still 3 sizes too big. You can imagine my delight when Simms introduced the Women’s G3’s. The fit on these waders is perfect. I can layer up underneath and still move with comfort yet still maintain my feminine shape. They’re built with the same five layer GORETEX fabric that is used on the men’s G4’s for increased durability which is everything I’ve ever wanted in a women’s wader. What are your thoughts on the Women’s Vapor Boots? I’ve been really happy with these for sure. It’s actually built for the female foot and doesn’t feel like you’re lugging around a 10 pound brick with each step. The ankle support is unparalleled to any other boot I’ve used and I can actually be agile. I can move quickly (jumping in/out of a boat) when I need to and feel more confident in my foot placement. I’ve got to say, I really like the blue laces too — I generally fish with others and sometimes boots and gear get misplaced or taken by mistake. It’s nice to have a pair of laces that stand out and won’t get mistaken for dude boots. With only two semesters of college left, you’ve got to be stoked to get that diploma. Do you think you’ll pursue a career in fishing? Yes! I knew from a very young age that I wanted to have a career in fly fishing. I’ve always had the desire to see other countries with a rod in hand and share it with others. Reading stories about tigerfish in Africa, bonefish on the flats and the ever elusive permit have pulled at me like gravity. I just recently started working for Yellow Dog Fly Fishing Adventures and will be hosting groups of anglers to Christmas Island in May then Kamchakta, Russia in August. I must say, I’ve netted my dream job!

IItâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just over half an hour from my home, it is early season,

the coldest spring in many years in Iceland. But my feet are being kept warm by the hot spring fed water that holds some of the biggest wild Brown Trout in the world.

It’s windy and the air is cold. A weighted Black Ghost Streamer on a long SA Fluorocarbon leader gets the fly down deep. The right technique, instant action, a small but very fat fish of 64 cm. 20 minutes later, a massive pull, followed by a massive fight. No other freshwater species comes even close to the strength of these fish. Many times I have thought I had foul-hooked fish here when they strip off 150 meters of line. I have lost many fish due to lack of backing here but this time I won. 90 cm and almost 10 kg of Brown Trout to open the season with.

May is normally prime time but this year extreme weather conditions delayed things. Heavy northern winds and frost made it impossible to fish most of the month. But there were some days … Finally a morning where the water reflected the sky in total calmness. Even though there was frost, two to three big

schools of Brown Trout were cruising around the surface like Tarpon on the flats. There was an ongoing hatch which got the fish feeding on the surface. It’s a true challenge to get the fly close to the fish in these conditions but if you are used to fishing Bonefish on shallow flats, you know the technique. Except for here I use a light rod, light tippet and dry flies. A thick tippet and you won’t get a touch.

Very exciting morning running around like a mad man stalking the schools and catching lots of fish. When I hooked a fish in one school, the rest got spooked off. But then another school nearby was not effected so I could keep several schools going and almost none stop action. It was a fantastic and magical morning, the first real action packaged this season. The calm warm water sends steam up in the sky, the silence only interrupted by big trout breaking the surface either to mark who the boss or just to take a snack from the

water film. It was magic, it was five hours and 10 trout up to 80 cm, it was heaven!

Late May I spend on the part of the lake with colder water in more windy conditions. I mostly fished nymphs or Black Ghost Streamer. I have never caught so many trout in my life! When finding the fish and technique, I just got punished with amazing fights over and over again. Most of the Brown Trout are from 60 to 80 cm but quite a few from 80 to 95 cm. Once I dreamt of catching a wild Brown Trout over 3 kg but here, 3 kg is a small fish. But the thing is, even a 3 kg fish gives a battle like an express train. Sometimes, we hook fish that run and we never see. In June, the good weather has finally kicked in. The trout were starting this Tarpon behaviour again, cruising around in schools and becoming sensitive to me chasing them.

Many times they are spooked before the line even touches the water if you are not careful. It is challenging and fun. I use a Scott Radian for this. It can deliver the fly gently and has enough power in the butt section to handle to big fish. At least 200 meters of backing is needed and a Lamson Speedster is handy since it can pick the line fast up after long runs. On a windy and grey day in June, a fish rolled on my CDC nymph hanging just under the surface with just 5 meters of line out. When lifting the rod to set the hook, it felt like nothing else. It was not the usual explosion where I just avoid to get any tangle or broken line in the first speedy run. This one took off but more deep and heavy like a submarine. It was not a 150 meter run but more many 20 meters over and over again. We waded out to try to net the fish and at first sight, a classic quote came to mind, “we are going to need

a bigger boat”. In this case a bigger net. But after many attempts we got the head first into the net and the battle was over. It was a pig with fins, nothing like the others. The local biologist claims the shape of this fish is because it has never spawned. I don’t know but I do know that a 101 x 63 cm monster fish was defeated and the mystery of the water was proven right, there are fish over 15 kg here!

Next day we went evening fishing. Ásta was getting irritated on the fishing since the fish got spooked (off) so easy. She took a break but I pushed her to take a few casts more. She did and after a few casts her spell and the evening silence was broken by something running like a nuclear submarine. The thing took her way of the taking spot with me running after it with the net. I got close to landing it many times and could not believe what I was seeing in the gin clear water. An absolute perfect Brown Trout in yet a size that is out of

this world. I told Ásta it was big but not how big just to keep her calm. We landed the fish and it was as beautiful as it gets. Mine was like a fat pig but the proportions of this one was stunning. 98 cm and over 15 kg of suburb ice age Brown Trout! These last 24 hours most likely produced the two biggest Brown Trout of the season world wide. This being 100% wild fish only living of natural food sources. To witness this is most likely one in a life time experience that we will never forget.

At the end of June, I had reached a total of 174 Brown Trout from this water which is my best result ever. Four of these fish was over 90 cm. I have a very unique place close to my home and even though I love every fish a catch here, it’s now time to start the Salmon season which is how I spend July, August and September.

Polytetrafluoroethylene, it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sound neither locally sourced, environmentally friendly or biodegradable. The fact is that Polytetrafluoroethylene (or Gore-tex as we know it) degrades slower than the master-card debt i inflicted on my self buying the waders in the first place.

Even if Simms waders are made with the best materials and the best craftsmanship they will eventually wear out, or more likely be damaged by mishaps or lack of proper use or care. The joy of a pair of fresh new, un-stinking, waders is second to none but it has always bothered me that there is still a lot left of the materials in the leaky old ones. Ever wondered what the people at the FFE Repair centre do with the waders and jackets that are deemed as beyond repair? They save up the materials and send them off to be reused and given preciuos material a new life.

The fabric used on Simms waders is extremely durable and light weight so it can be used for years after it no longer is suitable for submersion. But used for what? Only your imagination setts the limits, or in our case a limit propably should have been sett before making the Simms Dog jacket for Rio-The-Wonder-Dog. Walking a long the river bank with a simmsed-up dog provides us with a pleasuring dose of irony and self-unimportance, even if the dog is not too happy about it.

Darth Waders, the ruler of the damp side turned in to a Simms laptop bag. These bags are a solid fashion statement, and will last for years! And when you add in the original prize for the waders you can keep up with the hipsters on high street.

To make flies that the trout always want to eat it is important to have a good fly tying workstation. Good light and the blocking out of the real world is important. I have made quantum leaps as i fly tier after installing Simms curtains in my tying room, not only beautiful but also with pockets for storing beer.

Taking my daughter fishing for the first time i felt that she needed to have her own waders. Now they serve as waders for the teddy bear. Probably the most well traveled pair of baby waders on the planet.

One late November night I got the idea of turning my old waders in to seat covers for the fish-mobile. The result was above and beyond any expectations. We have used those seat covers for 7 years and almost 150.000 km, and they are still 100% intact.

The only part of the waders that i put to use with out any other alterations than cutting them of is the neoprene socks. I do a lot of back country fly fishing and to save weight i walk inn in my wading shoes and use the old wader socks to stay dry on the hike to the river. That way I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to bring both hiking boots and wading boots and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t wear out the socks on my waders. Make the world a better place by getting your sewing machine out and put your old waders to some good use!

My name is Andreas Andersson, day time car salesman since a while ago and night time fly tyer since many years. During the last couple of years I have been fortunate enough to demonstrate and teach fly tying in 8 countries and ties flies on a proffessional level for anglers in over 25 countries. My patterns and ideas is featured in international media and yes I’ve time to do some fishing myself to.

My specialty lies in creating patterns and making flies for predatory fish, any predatory fish really..one day it might be marlin or shark flies falling of the vise and the next its smaller baitfish for something else, the important part is that they work. Work as in moving in the correct way, be easy to cast with the rod and line suited for the fishing intended, be durable and..they have to catch fish. The working features mentioned above comes from knowledge of the tons of different cool materials available today, inspiration from others, a touch of creativity, learning from countless mistakes made and most importantly testing.

By testing i mean real fishing, nothing tells you youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re on to a good pattern design than loosing track of how many fish that new fly you have been working on has caught. My own top three passions in fly fishing is pike on the fly in rivers, lakes and along the swedish baltic coast, small stream dry fly fishing in woodlands and to strip big streamers for big brown trout. The later of those more accurately being described by some of my friends as an obsession, rightfully so to i have to admit. I guess it takes some kind of obsession to spend cold nights out in the rain, countless hours in the car going to fishing spots and so on, just to maybe not even catch anything but fresh air.

There’s something very exciting in actively hunting for those rare big bruisers that has gotten an taste for meat. Especially since so many people seems to think of trout as picky and shy creatures. That’s not always the case, I’ve come to learn, a big trout can and will eat the biggest piece of food they can fit in their mouth, not rarely in a surprisingly brutal way. Other trouts, sculpins, mices, small birds all are on the menu, so are size 26 mayflies, quite a fascinating fish isn’t it?

More than once I have been at a river during a heavy hatch and seen what looks like if the whole population of fish was rising to eat the bugs coming of the water, and then all of a sudden you see and hear a big heavy splash or swirl from something with serious shoulders. You might have seen it too if you spend time on rivers, and might as I did wondered “what was that?”. That’s one of the fish of my obsession that had sneaked up and attacked one of the bug eaters, one of the unicorns. Go after them, tight lines! Andreas Andersson

Most premium reels rely on a pawl type clutch mechanism. These are often vulnerable to stress related failure, contamination and wear. All of our reels employ a Torrington zero-lash roller clutch. This mechanism relies on the locking effect of a number of ramps and rollers to achieve torque transmission. There are no “teeth” or “steps” to break off or wear out. And the zero-lash feature means instant engagement. This improves feel and eliminates “spike” that the reel, line and leader experience when a typical pawl clutch hooks up.

The drag system in all of our reels consists of a pair of precisely matched conical elements which are drawn together with spring tension to produce variable rates of smooth rotational braking. By re-configuring the surface area of traditional disks into a pair of matching conical elements we were able to seal the drag completely from moisture, salt and grit. And since the mass of the drag elements is centralized, the spool’s rotating mass is much lower which makes the reel more responsive to light drag settings. Because the average radius of the contact surface is much smaller (being conical rather than disk-shaped), start-up torque is too low to measure.

The term Hard Alox is taken from the anodizing process itself, wherein the aluminum surface is converted to aluminum oxide. By increasing the coating thickness and reducing porosity, our Hard Alox coating is much more durable than any other reel. Hard Alox trumps the conventional and ubiquitous Type 2 anodize, a finish which emphasizes gloss and color selection over durability. In place of Type 2 we offer you enhanced resistance to abrasion, impact and corrosion and a look that tells the story of beauty which, while not being just “skin deep”, actually does start there.

Our large arbor reels maximize the benefits of large arbor design by maximizing the arbor diameter-to-width ratio. The spool is large in circumference and wide, so that line is stored in a shallow layer. The increased circumference provides high retrieve rate and eliminates line coil memory. The wide, shallow line layer means there is little radius change as line is pulled form the reel. This results in constant drag torque during long runs and eliminates the risk of tippets breaking due to drag force gain.

ARX is a purpose-built reel for Spey or switch casting a variety of lines with maximum line control and reliability. The continuing evolution of Spey and Scandi lines, shooting heads, flat mono, etcetera demands a reel that can help prevent line snags. Arx has a full cage to prevent line from escaping critical areas, and the gap between the case and spool is on the side of the reel to prevent small lines from dropping into the space between. Normally a configuration like this would do a good job at preventing line fouling, but would preclude palming the reel. But as you can see from the photos Arx is carefully milled on the bottom third of the reel to expose a functional palming section.

The Speedster is a super-high retrieve rate reel with a narrower arbor, inboard mounted handle and an outer diameter significantly larger than our highest performing reels. The narrow arbor prevents line barreling, and the added circumference and inboard handle improve retrieve rate. Mate these features with our time tested smooth-as-silk, maintenance free drag system, classic Waterworks-Lamson styling and attention to detail, and you have what the name implies: Speedster HD follows the lead of our Arx and Guru HD reels by incorporating a full-cage design. Litespeed has now been refined for even higher retrieve rate, improved ergonomics, easier line management and less mass. Narrower drag geometry has translated into a flatter spool surface for less knuckle dragging. A more aggressive drag knob has been made. Structural refinements such as the curved arbor have made a light reel even lighter, and this curved arbor stores backing into a “diameter well” and keeps “working line” at a maximum radius to optimize everything we love about large arbor reels. The spool/stripping arm geometry has been made consistent with reels we developed since the first Litespeed, which does a better job of preventing snags and line damage. The pliers have a pair of superb grips on the clip and, plenty purchase area under the flared points too. The flexible rubber neck between the clip and the finger-loop is absolutely new to me and although you think at FlyofTying Tools first it will not last for long, you will change your mind quickly when using it. It’s very solid and seems very good quality rubber indeed. The elastic motion surely will help prevent the hackle quills from snapping while winding. It’s a brilliant little tool.

Floating, whether you are swinging, riffling, or hitching your fly. This is the line for fishing on or near the surface. Visual takes will never go out of fashion.

TTD™

We have designed these lines to maintain the fly speed to get the flies down to the required depth. The lower densities in the rear of the taper help keep up the speed and the higher densities in the front help get the fly down to the fish. An excellent choice in pools where the main current is close to the opposite bank.

FLOATING/HOVER/INT

TTD™

DOUBLE DENSITY Gives higher speed but brings the fly just below the surface. Fly speed is easily controlled by mending the floating part of the line up or downstream.

FLOATING/INT/S2

HOVER/INT

This is the must-have and one of the most versatile lines for any angler chasing anadromous fish. If stealth is required, this line provides it. Perfectly balanced so it will stay just below the surface.

Same qualities as the Float/Hover/Intermediate but brings the fly down a little deeper. This line became a firm favorite with our field testers.

FLOATING/H/S3

S1/S2

Fishes relatively close to the surface. Good for shallower pools with fast currents where you need to slow down the swing. Also an excellent choice in high water when you need to go a little deeper.

S2/S3

SINGLE DENSITY - SINKING These single density lines are for the fastest water and the deepest pools. The one objective of these lines is to get the fly down deep quickly. The new UST taper and the textured surface make these sinking lines much easier to handle—especially when bringing to the surface before casting.

750 & 850 GRAIN

TTD™

Similar qualities as Floating/INT/Sink2 but gets the fly down deep. A great choice for when fish are lying in deeper water and where fly speed is the key.

INT/S2/S4

Probably the best all-around sinking line through the entire season. A great fish catcher in all temperatures and levels.

TTD™

This line cuts straight through the surface, but the intermediate section helps keep the fly speed up while the Sink4 section brings the fly down to where the fish are holding. With the Intermediate section below the surface, there will be less influences by the current, providing excellent contact with the fly. This was a favorite line of the field testers in pools of medium depth and current.

S1/S3/S5

TTD™

This line incorporates similar characteristics as the Intermediate/ Sink2/Sink4 but works deeper. This line excels in heavy currents and when the fish are holding in deeper pools. It casts like a bullet and caught plenty of fish during field testing.

Same density as the Sink 5, only heavier, which makes them get down even deeper. The taper design enables these lines to fish deeper than other grain-rated lines on the market.

Fly fishing has an uncanny ability to permeate every aspect of my existence, Its not just a hobby, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a lifestyle (but seriously, lifestyle, isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t that a rather big word for guys preferring to wear hoodies and waders?) or mental level but on even the more ceremonial level. I proposed by a river in New Zealand, we had our honeymoon Bone fishing on the Bahamas and we spent 8 weeks on maternity leave trout hunting in Montana. For me fly fishing is all consuming obsession and a fantastic source of joy.

Can you take your family fly fishing? Yes! Will it still be fun? Well thatÂ´s mostly up to you. For me it has been fantastically rewarding and it has lifted my hobby up to a new level. If you fly fish for the sole reason of escaping your family, then donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t try this. But if you are willing to do whatever it takes to stay married and still fish 70+ days a year this is one way to do it. Starting slow and easy is the key in any new undertaking/ enterprise, so we started with a 45 minute visit to the local trout creek when my daughter was 6 days old I could not live with the fact that she might spend her first weekend not fishing and we learned a few things. May flies still hatch even if your life has changed totally and babies are mobile so since then things have escalated quite nicely: The following weekend, the first good dry fly hatch with a baby strapped to the top of my waders. The following fall, 8 weeks of trout fishing in Montana, Colorado and Idaho.

After that we have spent every available free hour on the water stalking trout. It is fully possible to be on the river 10 hours a day with a 3 year-old but I had to make a few changes to my set up and routine. The chest pack had to give up its place for a baby sling and the dry fly powder gave way to baby formula. That was the biggest change for me personally and I made fatal mistakes on the first couple of trips. If you mistake baby formula for dry fly powder all your dries will sink!! My habit of stunt wading had to stop when carrying the baby sling. Never leave the tent, car, RV or cabin without the baby bottle and the favourite toy. If you do it will hurt your fishing more than not bringing flies.

Choose fishing spots close to the road. You will be carrying a lot more stuff so do yourself a favour and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t haul it too far into the bush. If you want to go in to the wild, our best tip is to use a canoe and paddle in to the back country lakes. This saves you the hardship of trying to carry everything. ItÂ´s not rocket science, it is just down right addictive and even a baby can do it for weeks at a time. It all boils down to attitude, put the fun back in fundamentalism and get out there.

- THE COASTAL SILVER

Quiet and determined, the kayaks reach a little plot of land, behind us the main coast of Fyn. Here find place a great reef, the â&#x20AC;&#x153;red Xâ&#x20AC;? in one of my many imaginary treasure maps, a shoal about 100 meters long and only a dozen large, hidden beneath the surface of the sea, and covered with algae and dense clusters of mussels. At the sides the bottom slopes gently into a promising step.

Carefully, we move the first steps in the water crossed by a strong current, and we catch sight of the first sea trout porpoising on the surface a few meters from us. Treasure found! The water wets my loyal G3 waders to the knee while me and my fishing buddy we fish back to back, casting our fly lines towards opposing horizons and moving us toward the end tip of the shoal. We are wading and moving in slow unconscious symbiosis, captured by the perpetual sea trout fishing rhythm. For this occasion i fish with a Scott Tidal 6 weight, and rather than the usual shooting head i use a traditional wf line, more gently to launch shorter, just enough to cover the lateral area of the long reef. Surprised by the amount of small shrimps moved here and there by the current, like little floating gems, we replace soon our inadequate flies with small olive shrimps fly imitations. In the shallow, by stripping very fast our flies, the results come quickly, few casts, and the first of 5 sea trout reaches the landing net.

In an hour we fish the entire spot, the tide and the current fall quickly, and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time to take a break. We leave the water.

At about 600 meters I can clearly see the coast of Fyn hue of the typical yellow and green spring colors. Here reigns silence and absolute peace. Sipping a hot cup of coffee, “I daydream“ on the true essence of sea trout fishing from the coast: “A sea trout fisherman, like Stevenson: draws and invents treasure maps.” The comparison is perfect… We mentally draw maps and routes leading us to explore the island’s shores in search of the precious silver treasure of this sea. It’s a wide exploration here on the island of

Fyn, many kilometers of coastline easily walkable in wading, hidden reefs, shoals outcropping not far from the coastline, small islands. Sometimes the most concealed areas hiding most precious treasures. Research and exploration are the true essence of sea trout fishing. Learning how to read the water allows you to continuously draw new maps and each one’s experience is the reliable compass to trust.
