The sea, our parish.... “I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.” Matthew 25: 31-46 The Mission to Seafarers is the world’s leading maritime welfare charity providing professional support services and ship-visiting to seafarers, mariners and sailors of all faiths or none, as part of the worldwide Anglican Communion. Identified by our ‘Flying Angel’ logo, we work in over 260 ports around the world, providing assistance to the 1.3 million working men and women who crew the merchant shipping fleet. Founded in the United Kingdom in 1856, and entirely funded by voluntary donations and legacies, the Mission offers a comprehensive ministry of care for all those facing peril at sea. Mission teams regularly meet with seafarers suffering from post-traumatic stress, illness, isolation, loneliness and fatigue, as emergencies at sea put lives in danger and port stopover times are continually eroded. We work with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and raise awareness of seafaring issues within the Anglican Communion. We also engage with the British Government and the European Union on all matters related to welfare concerns in the shipping industry. We are a watchful, discreet and critical friend of all concerned, to ensure the best outcomes for seafarers in need. The Mission provides seafarers’ centres in 121 ports and offers a warm Christian welcome in safe surroundings. A Mission centre typically provides counselling, affordable communications, advice on employment issues, a place for prayer and reflection, donated warm clothing, hospitality and spiritual support. In over 200 ports, local honorary chaplains and volunteers provide invaluable ship-visiting, transport and support services. Our ship visitors take phonecards and internet-linked laptops on board, so seafarers unable to come ashore can contact their families. All around the world, the Mission provides help and hope to seafarers, in places of greatest need. To help support the Mission please go to www.justgiving.com/themissiontoseafarers.
Introduction Welcome to the 2014 Mission to Seafarers’ Prayer Diary I am delighted to introduce this year’s edition of our global prayer diary which is sent out to over 71 countries and 260 ports, to focus our day on our shared community in Christ to help and support seafarers. I want to start by sending my very best wishes and thanks to the Revd Andrew Huckett, formerly our chaplain in Southampton and long standing editor of this diary, who has retired this year after serving the Mission for 44 years. Our prayers and thoughts are with him and his family as he embarks on a new life in ‘retirement’.

Prayer has featured heavily in my thoughts during the last few months of 2013, particularly inspired by my discussions with Archbishop Justin Welby here in the UK. We had the great honour to meet with him, during our Mission Liaison Bishops’ Conference, at Lambeth Palace to discuss seafarers’ welfare and our on-going Mission work priorities. The Archbishop has also made some very important statements about the challenges facing the Anglican Communion. The most striking perhaps is his continued insistence that the priority of the Church, beyond anything else, must be to commit itself to fostering and supporting the life of prayer. With that in mind, I would recommend the use of this, our daily prayer diary. Please pray for our Mission teams and sister charities all around the world and for seafarers and their families. I would also ask that you continue to pray for our generous, loyal supporters and voluntary fundraisers, without whom we could not raise the necessary finance to function.
Andrew Wright Secretary General, The Mission to Seafarers

The Book of Common Prayer Prayers to be used in storms at sea: O most powerful and glorious Lord God, at whose command the winds blow, and lift up the waves of the sea, and who stillest the rage thereof: We thy creatures, but miserable sinners, do in this our great distress cry unto thee for help: Save, Lord, or else we perish. We confess, when we have been safe, and seen all things quiet about us, we have forgot thee our God, and refused to hearken to the still voice of thy word, and to obey thy commandments: But now we see how terrible thou art in all thy works of wonder; the great God to be feared above all: And therefore we adore thy Divine Majesty, acknowledging thy power, and imploring thy goodness. Help, Lord, and save us for thy mercy’s sake in Jesus Christ thy Son, our Lord. Amen.
Thanksgiving after a storm: Jubilate Deo. From Psalm 66. O be joyful in God, all ye lands: sing praises unto the honour of his Name, make his praise to be glorious. Say unto God, O how wonderful art thou in thy works: through the greatness of thy power shall thine enemies be found liars unto thee. For all the world shall worship thee: sing of thee, and praise thy Name. O come hither, and behold the works of God: how wonderful he is in his doing toward the children of men. He turned the sea into dry land: so that they went through the water on foot; there did we rejoice thereof. He ruleth with his power for ever; his eyes behold the people: and such as will not believe shall not be able to exalt themselves. O praise our God, ye people: and make the voice of his praise to be heard; Who holdeth our soul in life: and suffereth not our feet to slip. For thou, O God, hast proved us: thou also hast tried us, like as silver is tried.
“If we want to see things changed, it starts with prayer. It starts with a new spirit of prayer, using all the traditions, ancient and modern, of prayer. When it comes, it will be linked to what has gone before, but it will look different, because it is a new renewal for new times.” The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby

Prayers A Short Order of Daily Prayer
(Can be used in conjunction with The Mission to Seafarers’ Prayer Diary)
Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits. We thank you, Lord, for all seafarers – and for the food, raw materials and manufactured goods by which our lives are sustained. For the skills of seamanship and navigation which bring them in safety across the oceans of the world. For the service of Christian and other maritime agencies who care for seafarers and their families. In the cycle of prayer we remember today . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Almighty God, remember in your love and mercy all who minister in The Mission to Seafarers. Prosper the work to which they are engaged, enable them faithfully to preach your word and to fulfil their ministry. May they uphold Christ both by their word and in their lives. Raise up, we pray, faithful and true people for this work, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. God bless all seafarers. Guard the storm-bound; protect their families; and give them peace. Amen.
For the Life of Faith (from the Galla people, Ethiopia)
O God, you have prepared in peace the path I must follow today. Help me to walk straight on that path. If I speak, remove lies from my lips. If I am hungry, take away from me all complaint. If I have plenty, destroy pride in me. May I go through the day calling on you, you, O Lord, who know no other Lord.

For Justice (from Latin American Council of Churches)
God of mercy and hope, in the struggle for freedom grant us strength; in decisions about freedom grant us wisdom; in the practice of freedom grant us guidance; in the dangers of freedom grant us protection; in the life of freedom grant us joy and in the use of freedom grant us vision; for your name’s sake.
Proclaiming the Good News (from the Church in Australia)
Grant us, Lord God the vision of your Kingdom, forgiveness and new life, and the stirring of your Spirit; so that we may share your vision, proclaim your love, and change this world, in the Name of Christ.
A Blessing (from the Church in Wales)
God the Sender, send us, God the Sent, come with us, God the Strengthener of those who go, empower us, that we may go with you, and find those who will call you, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
