FEARLESS GENIUS EXPERIENCE
FOREWORD At the end of the twentieth century, a brilliant tribe in Silicon Valley set out to create a better future. Their quest sparked the Digital Revolution, an explosion of innovation that created more jobs and wealth than at any time in history. They changed our world forever. And Doug Menuez was there, documenting the greatest innovators of this crucial era from 1985-2000 to create an extraordinary archive, now preserved at Stanford University Library, from which we bring you Fearless Genius: The Digital Revolution Exhibition. In the pages to follow, you will find a flexible design combining Doug Menuez’s ground-breaking photography with multimedia to deliver a powerful immersive experience. We have sought to achieve Doug’s vision, not only to catalogue and present the unseen history of the Digital Revolution to audiences, but also to ultimately ask how we leverage innovation and education towards the best possible future. Although Silicon Valley began as a regional explosion, it quickly became a global phenomenon sparking whole regions to scale and develop modern economies. Astounding new technologies changed the way we interact with each other and the world’s cultures. The impact of this continues today as entrepreneurial start-up culture continues to spread like wildfire around the globe. Fearless Genius brings fuel to the fire with inspirational stories and relevant lessons for the new generation of fearless geniuses everywhere. The exhibition takes visitors on an emotional, visual and auditory journey. The greatest technological advances are created at the intersection of the arts and science and that is what Fearless Genius represents to its audiences. Doug Menuez’s access brings us the largely unknown sacrifice, struggle and pure idealism that drove the people who built our world. It is an extremely compelling exhibition, with behind the scenes imagery, corresponding text and commentary from Doug, video interviews and virtual reality that will give visitors a rare insider’s perspective on this explosive period. The exhibition leads visitors to a powerful finale featuring the next generation of fearless geniuses, selected by public nomination, then interviewed and photographed prior to the exhibition arrival. Showcasing brilliant local innovators will be a critical part of the exhibition in each global venue. We are very excited to work closely with a world-renowned photographer who was so fortunate to have had intimate access to the true technological pioneers of our time, and to bring his work to venues and their visitors in 2017.

IMMERSION ENTRY HALL It is now the year 1985. Visitors enter a mysterious and very dark hallway with walls 15ft tall, lit by a single colored, pulsing strip on the floor drawing them forward. As the first visitor triggers a motion sensor, a small rear-projection animation and custom sound scape begins. First, visitors see a single image as it appears on the right side, joined by a mirror image on the left, moving forward to pull the visitors onward. The small image zooms up to fill the entire wall and disappears to be replaced by other images of various sizes chosen from Menuez’s Silicon Valley archive of 250,000 images. They are changing rapidly as visitors progress and then multiply into thousands of tiny images which begin to move in graphic shapes and swarms. As the Fearless Genius images and animations are rear projected across the walls visitors experience a truly immersive introduction to the emotional intensity, passion and chaos of the digital revolution before exiting into the brightly lit main exhibit spaces.

MENUEZ ARCHIVE IMAGES FROM STANFORD UNIVERSITY LIBRARY
THE MAP GALLERY Exiting the immersive entry hall experience, visitors enter the traditional white-walled environment of the MAP Gallery. Here we see the Fearless Genius photographs selected from the Douglas Menuez Photography Collection, housed at Stanford University Library, and provided by the MAP (Menuez Archive Projects) Foundation. They range in size from 600mm x 400mm up to 1820mm x 1220mm, are beautifully finished with white mount board, satin black frames and are positioned around the gallery. Over 270sqm (2700sqft) of wall surface in the Doug Menuez Collection provides ample space to hang the Fearless Genius photographs in chronological order, starting with imagery from 1986 at the beginning of the gallery and moving through to the year 2000. Adjacent to each photograph, Doug’s commentary will be displayed in high quality print, allowing the visitor to gain insight into what made that moment in time a special one. Quotes from some of the subjects in Doug’s photos are stenciled on walls throughout. Video interviews with those subjects await visitors in the next environment.

VIDEO and artefact area As visitors leave the white, modern, traditional surrounds of the MAP Gallery they are enveloped in the darkened environment of the video and artefact projection area, providing yet another experience contrast. This section of the exhibition will display various video interviews of the veterans of the Digital Revolution. Visitors can hear and see the people behind the innovations talking about what they experienced. Individual videos will be available on wall mounted screens, wall projections and a semi-enclosed theater. Additionally, vitrines will display various prototypes and development products from which visitors can see direct connections to today’s products. These artefacts will be sourced from Technological Museums, private collections and regionally available artefacts.

dynamic time-line Fearless Genius: The Digital Revolution Exhibition is summarized through a dynamic time-line, synchronized and projected over multiple surfaces along one side of a darkened viewing space. Info-graphics, imagery and simple interpretive text seemingly unfold across an angled floor screen, up the wall and onto the ceiling, in a captivating 15m wide display. A period sound score accompanies the visuals to round out the experience. Visitors are taken on a visual journey from the humble early days in Silicon Valley, the phenomenal growth and burst of the dot-com bubble, to the consumer driven lifestyle technology of present day. The imagery spreads across the space, visually engulfing the visitor in the technological fractures from the Digital Revolution.

The time-line juxtaposes technological development with cultural and historic events happening in tandem. We see how emerging technologies impacted manufacturing, education, fashion, music, the visual arts, medicine, science and society. With context, we can see more clearly how innovative and important this era was in shaping the world we live in today. Every aspect of human life has been affected. Finally, emerging technologies and futuristic concepts are presented, leaving the visitor intrigued and excited about what the future holds as human kind shapes their destiny through expedited technological advancements.
FUTURE FEARLESS genius: the next WAVE In this section, visitors can now contemplate the fruits of the history they’ve just experienced as they enter the Fearless Genius Future: The Next Wave. First they meet today’s leading entrepreneurs and innovators presented via short Virtual Reality films. VR goggles will be available to let viewers step into the intense world of these technology leaders as they go about their daily working lives. We’ll be able to see them thinking, working with teams, moving through design or manufacturing environments and to see what they see. At each venue the exhibit will feature the best of the next generation of Fearless Geniuses from that country or city. An exciting high-profile search will launch in 2016 to identify the top 50 candidates. Just as he documented the pioneers of Silicon Valley, Menuez leads this dynamic global effort to find and record the heirs to their legacy. They will be nominated by the public via social media, community organizations, government, business and collegiate

networks. Menuez and his team will then select the top 10 and then produce video coverage and stills to be featured in the exhibit. Each featured Fearless Genius will have a short multimedia film about them and their innovations presented on a screen with products, prototypes, drawings and other materials explaining their accomplishments. Their work is presented in context with the new wave of technology innovations emerging which include: sensors, 3D printing, nanotech, biotech, genomics, quantum computing and more. Our young innovators represent the vanguard of a new revolution that might very well dwarf the last one. The 40 runners-up will be highlighted in the exhibit with a Fearless Genius wall of honor listing them with their work. This search contest will allow multiple opportunities to engage and build audience interest in the exhibition in advance of its arrival.
