Almost half (47 per cent) of four to 12 year old children are at risk of serious injury if the car they’re travelling in is hit from the side, according to new research by consumer champion Which?*

To mark Child Safety Week that took place 21 – 27 June, Which? surveyed over 1,000 parents of children aged between four and 12 and below 135 cm (four foot five) tall, who should by law use a child car seat. 17 per cent didn’t use a car seat at all, and a further 30 per cent used backless booster cushions which, though they meet legal requirements, offer less protection than full-sized child car seats in side-on crashes. Peter Vicary-Smith, Chief Executive of Which?, says:

“Every year in the UK, around 30 children under 12 years old are killed while travelling in cars, and a further 300 are seriously injured – kids might pile the pressure on parents not to have to sit in a full-sized car seat when they get a bit older, but it could mean the difference between life and death.

“Nobody who has seen the footage of a side impact collision on our website would choose to use a backless booster seat – while they’re better than using no car seat at all, they simply don’t provide enough protection.”

Which? has been putting child car seats through their paces since 1966, using more rigorous tests than those required by law, including a side impact collision test. One in four car accidents involve a side-on collision, so Which? is working with consumer groups across the European Union to see the legal minimum standards for child car seats raised. Which? is also calling on manufacturers to phase out backless boosters even before the legal standards are changed.

Kids missing out on sport through lack of parental support A staggering one in five children aged 6-11 years do not receive any support from their parents when it comes to getting involved in sport outside of school, with a further 50 per cent of boys and 15 per cent of girls saying they would play more sport if their parents were prepared to drive them to sports clubs. The shocking findings were revealed in research released today by David Lloyd Leisure, as part of its Team Family campaign. The polls, which surveyed more than 1,000 children aged 6-11, and 2,000 parents across the UK, found that despite these figures, a third of parents believe their children should be playing more sport. “Parents play a vital role in determining how physically active their children are. The results reveal that while parents feel their children should be more active, their behaviour is not supporting this belief,” says Sarah Hobbs, Head of Family and Programming. When asked specifically how parents would like to see their children spend their leisure time playing sport came out at the very top with 39 per cent followed by doing homework (16 per cent), playing a musical instrument (15 per cent), arts & crafts (8 per cent) and watching television (6 per cent). Despite this, half of parents confess to watching more than four hours of television per week as a family compared to just 25 per cent who play more than four hours of sport a week with their children.

Encouraging children to have a go and get involved in a variety of physical activities from a young age is absolutely vital if they are to develop core skills such as balance, flexibility and hand eye coordination.

Managing director of 3Line Media Estelle Hughes talks to Flying Start about working on Driver Dan’s Story Train and how encouraging children to read stories from an early age helps set them up for life... Along with her two business partners, Estelle Hughes formed 3Line Media almost four years ago. “Prior to that I had nearly always been a broadcaster in children’s television,” she told Flying Start Magazine. Estelle’s most recent job was as controller of Children’s ITV and before that she worked at the Children’s BBC and the Disney Channel UK. Despite this wealth of experience, Estelle confesses that her parents are still waiting for her career to progress. “I think they think it’s a career progression – you start off in children’s television and then grow up and go into the adult stuff but that’s not the case.” She continued: “I’ve worked a lot on the broadcast side so it’s very different and very exciting to now be on the other side and to be creating that content and producing it rather than broadcasting it.” Since the early days of her career, Estelle has never looked back. Talking about her current role as 3Line Media’s managing director, Estelle told Flying Start: “I enjoy the fact that it’s so many roles in one. We’re a small company but we have an animations studio in Bristol so you get the benefits of being small and able to make decisions between the three of you, but at the same time we’ve got a studio full of animators and very creative people so you get a lot of fun and a lot of people around you. “I think being the MD just allows you to do a bit of everything.

I’ve been script editing and we’re also looking at new shows in development to try and go into production with those.” She continued: “I’ve got two business partners and it’s great that the three of us can sit in a room and make things happen. I’ve worked in some very big companies and sometimes decisions don’t happen very quickly.” The company is called 3Line because it has three areas – the studio, which has been around for 20 years and is run by Estelle’s business partner; the company’s own projects (including Driver Dan’s Story Train); and consultancy. “For the first year of 3Line Media we were growing all those areas but also did quite a bit in consultancy and at the same time all gearing up to trying to get Driver Dan funded and green lit. So I think when that happened to us there were obviously two important stages, one was when the BBC made us an offer to

acquire the show and the second was when twoFour54, the company in Abu Dhabi, came onboard as our co-production partners, so with them on board that’s when we had the green light to start production.” Estelle cites getting the green light on Driver Dan’s Story Train as one of the most significant moments for 3Line Media so far. She also sees it as the biggest achievement in her career. “I think children's media generally is a very tough area in the UK. There are reduced budgets, there are reduced funds available, there isn’t the government support in the UK that other countries have, it is a very competitive environment and I think to get the show funded and made and produced to such a high quality is an achievement that we’re all incredibly proud of.” Despite the hurdles in children’s television, Estelle enjoys working in the industry. “There’s always fun, I’d be lying if I didn’t say that, but certainly the financial pressures are there as they are for any industry. And I’m sure for a lot of viewers and maybe parents as well, they probably think that there’s more than a lot of television for their kids on air. For a lot of people there’s all these channels that weren’t there 10 or 15 years ago but actually, finding how much of that content is really new and how much of it is made for the audience of that country, you start to really bring those numbers down. I think it is an achievement for anyone to get a show produced and made to a high quality nowadays.” According to Estelle, having an original idea is the grounding for a successful children’s television show. “If you’re running a channel you can go and buy lots of very nice pre-school or older programming from most countries in the world, there’s a lot of it around, but to have one that stands out, that does something special and different for your audience, I think that’s what makes it particularly good in that way.” She added: “When you’re talking about pre-school content as well you’re looking for something that works on many levels, that’s entertaining for the youngest of kids, it’s educational without being too heavy, and it’s also enjoyable for parents. So many parents obviously sit and watch TV and play on the websites and read the books with their kids and I think when it’s a show that the parents can enjoy and know that their kids are gaining something from at the same time, then I think you’re doing a great job.” Estelle believes that the UK has a real pride in good quality children’s television. “I think we are particularly good at combining entertainment with education without being

heavy-handed.” She sees Grange Hill, which ran for 26 seasons, as the UK’s all-time classic children’s TV show and remembers the very first episode being aired. “I was hooked on it for years,” she said. “It changed with the times and it had that great balance of naughtiness and entertainment and also handled issues really well.” Talking about the educational curriculum behind Driver Dan’s Story Train, Estelle says: “Pre-literacy is so important. If you get kids enjoying stories and looking at books and sharing books among each other and with adults, there’s a confidence there and it’s a big hurdle that’s just overcome naturally if it happens in their early years.” She continues: “For so many people it comes naturally but for others it’s just not part of their family life and I think what this series hopefully does in a fun way is just make sharing a story part of your everyday fun.” Featuring animated characters as well as real children, the Driver Dan show embraces pre-literacy in a unique way by encouraging younger children to pick up a story book with their parents and have fun. “All these things are very important and done very subtly to get kids used to handling and using books. The fact that Driver Dan reads the book and he’s an adult character, all the other characters are children but Driver Dan is the only adult and it’s him who reads the book. That’s what we would like to encourage parents and adults to do, to read with kids. Even though he’s reading and turning the pages, the child characters will interject sometimes with a question while Dan is reading and that’s fine, you can break off from the story, you can talk, you can ask questions and then you can go back to it.” Estelle added: “I really don’t think there’s another show that’s done it in the same way.” With the making of the first series of Driver Dan finishing in July and the first book being published in the autumn, there are currently discussions about a possible second series with 3Line Media’s co-production partners twofour54 in Abu Dhabi. “We also have three new animation projects in development, all for older kids, and they’re all very different from each other but all funny and with really distinctive designs.” Estelle and her partners will divide their time between them and Driver Dan over the next few months so that they are ready to present at the Cannes TV Festival in October. With 3Line Media’s future plans laid out, Estelle went on to talk about how she believes children’s television will change over time: “I think we’ll probably just stop calling it television. It is already on multiple platforms so I think the way in which we consume it rather than watch it will just all merge and then it will be ever present.”

FS: What are you working on at the moment? AK:

A lot of things! I’m writing a book on quick and easy meals for babies, toddlers and older children. We’ve launched a range of natural organic sauces that you put together because I don’t like buying meat in a jar for a baby. So you have a sauce like a tomato, cheese, sweet potato sauce and you cook your vegetables and meat and blend it into the sauce. I’ve been launching those in supermarkets. We are launching some new meals from our Eat Fussy range and I am also working on a TV series that we record later this year, which goes out in spring 2011 called Annabel’s Kitchen. It’s on teaching kids how to cook with animation and puppets so that’s exciting. It’s very busy - I’ve just come back form the Birmingham Baby Show and I was in Jersey doing a baby show there.

FS: What does attending the baby shows entail for you? AK:

We have a stand so we give our food away for people to take and I sign my books and answer mums’ questions. I also give a talk everyday about the myths and truths of feeding your baby and toddler and eating in pregnancy.

FS:

What is the most commonly asked question you get asked from mums?

AK:

Usually their baby won’t eat and what can they do. Or their toddler is very fussy or some have allergies and what can they do if their child is allergic to milk or wheat. Lots of common problems like if the child has eczema, what kind of food is going to exacerbate the eczema. A lot of the same questions come up actually.

FS:

What advice would you give to parents with children who are fussy eaters?

AK:

First of all I wouldn’t only give them the food that they want because that will only encourage them to be more fussy. So I would stop giving them their favourite foods so they would be hungry and want to try new food. Widen the variety that they’re eating and don’t just give them a narrow range of foods. You’ve got to break the pattern and the pattern can only really be broken when they’re hungry. Another thing is I would praise when they eat well or try the tiniest amount of something new. I would ignore bad behaviour; you don’t want to acknowledge bad behaviour like not eating. If you don’t make a fuss when they’re not eating, they don’t make a fuss, instead of getting attention from you. Sometimes you have to disguise things, you might have to blend the food in a tomato sauce if they are lots of vegetables in it. Sometimes it might be that you have to give lots of healthy snacks rather than a main meal.

FS:

Can healthy eating really be made easy for parents and children?

AK:

All my recipes are quite easy and not difficult to make. I think that when a lot of people say the don’t have time to

cook, they think it’s going to take a lot longer than it does. The thing is, whatever ready made meal you buy, it doesn’t really taste as nice as something you make yourself. If you’re making a stir fry it doesn’t really take that long. Or you could do marinated chicken on a griddle, or chicken on a stick, it’s just not that time consuming really. You will teach your child healthy eating for life if you start them when they’re young, that’s why it’s so important. My new book is all about pasta because to be honest I had so many parents saying to me “all my child will eat is pasta”. I thought the good thing about pasta is that you can put together so much nutritious food like salmon and vegetables. The whole book is from babies and how you can introduce pasta to babies and get them chewing, and toddlers and how to cope with fussy toddlers and get them to eat by putting things together with pasta, and then food for the whole family with pasta recipes.

FS: Where do you get your inspiration for recipes from? AK:

Whenever I’m eating out or I go to the supermarket or reading magazines I’m always looking at new ideas, new recipes, things that might go together. I spend time in the kitchen experimenting and testing it out, it’s trial and error really. I kind of know what children like now because I’ve been doing it for so long, I’ve been doing it for 20 years. They don’t like too many things mixed together, they like cooking while they’re eating and they like oriental style food as well like soy sauce, mild curries and chicken satay. Sometimes we stick with things like burgers, chips, pizza, chicken nuggets, whereas if we gave them a pad thai noodle they would really like that. It’s got lots of vegetables in it, eggs, chicken, noodles, beansprouts and by pushing the boundaries a little bit your child will eat more than you think.

FS: As it’s coming up to the summer holidays, what advice would you give to parents who want to continue eating healthily whilst they are abroad?

AK: You’ve got to wash everything to make sure it’s clean,

especially salad and things like that. Probably steer clear of buffets as they’re kept warm for a long time and that’s when you tend to get tummy problems. It’s quite good to introduce your child before you go away to some local cuisine to get them used to it. Look at what the local fruits and vegetables are. Most places have more fresh produce than often we do as we import a lot of our fresh produce. There’s different fruits and vegetables in different countries so make the most of that.

FS: What foods would you particularly recommend during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

AK:

Two things are very important, both when you’re pregnant and when you’re breastfeeding. One is iron, generally when you’re pregnant you lack iron and the best source of iron is red meat. So you can have stir frys, spaghetti bolognaise, steak, something like that would be good to make sure you have enough red meat in your diet. The same after you’ve had your baby as generally you are quite low in iron after you’ve had your baby so try and have red meat products. If you’re vegetarian, whole grain cereals, spinach, lentils, they’re all a good source of iron but you need to have vitamin C in the same meal or you can’t absorb it, a lot of people don’t realise that. So say you’re having breakfast and you’re having whole grain cereal, yes it’s a good source of iron but you need to have a glass of orange juice with it to absorb it. And the other thing apart from iron is essential fatty acids, which are found in oily fish like salmon, which is very important particularly in the last few months of pregnancy when your baby’s brain is forming very rapidly. And again, very important when you’re breastfeeding as your baby’s brain grows very rapidly in the first year.

FS: How important is child nutrition? AK: It’s really important. In the first year a baby grows more 16

rapidly than any other time in their entire life. I do believe that you should give them lots of fresh produce and I think babies need better quality nutrition than we do so why are we eating fresh and they’re eating something that’s got a shelf life of a year? It’s wrong. It’s really important that you train them to have good eating habits because if they’re brought up on junk food then they tend to continue eating junk food. If you can get them to eat lots of fruit and vegetables when they’re young that’s all they’re going to be eating. What you set up in the early years is very, very important. Also teach children how to cook. If they learn how to cook they will eat good, fresh quality food. Otherwise when they go to university they’ll just eat rubbish. When my son went to university no-one cooked and they all just ended up eating pizzas and not very good quality food. But he’d been brought up to eat good food and he doesn’t eat junk food, he doesn’t like it. I trained him to cook a few things and it was the only good meal they had. It’s a shame, they go off to university and they can’t cook and can’t eat well because of their budget and the cheaper food is the junk food.

FS: So it’s all about teaching children to cook from an early age?

AK:

Yes, and they love it. They all love cooking, they really enjoy it and it’s a great way to bond with your child. It’s not just about making cup cakes, I write books about teaching children to make spaghetti and stir frys and pasta salads. I also believe that from the age of six or seven they should be allowed to be able to chop things up and peel things. They need to learn how to use a knife properly under supervision. You can’t cook without chopping things so I don’t hold children back, I think it’s important to teach them how to cook.

FS: You’ve been doing what you do for 20 years? AK:

It’s the 20th anniversary of the Complete Baby and Toddler Meal Planner. That was my first book that I wrote following the death of my first child who died when she was 13 weeks. The book was kind of my legacy to her and to make some meaning from her life and it was therapy as well, getting over her death writing it. It took me two-and-a-half years to write it and it was all about feeding babies and toddlers. I had a son after I lost Natasha and he just wouldn’t eat so I felt very vulnerable with a child who wasn’t eating very well, having already lost a child. The recipes were really recipes that I got him to eat. I was running a large playgroup and gave all the mums my recipes and they said to me “you should write a book.” The book has now sold three million copies. It’s become the best selling book on feeding babies and toddlers. I’ve written 22 books now on feeding children. Now we have food in supermarkets so we have a range of healthy ready meals for one – four year olds, and we have a new range of sources and we have a range of pastas. We also have a range of finger foods that we do with Disney. We also do a lot in food service food that gets served in Lego Land, Alton Towers, Chessington, hotels, a lot of places you go to that have childrens menu. We provide the food for the childrens menu and it’s really good quality food – low salt and no saturated fat – and it’s very important.

FS: What has been the highlight of your career so far? AK:

I love it all. I think the recognition I’ve had for my books is an ongoing highlight in that almost every mother I meet has used my books and we can talk about the recipes their child likes and it touches peoples’ lives. So everybody has benefitted from the books that I’ve written and that their children will grow up hopefully to have better eating habits and a healthier life. For me that’s an ongoing highlight that I’ve been able to change the way children eat whether it’s eating out at a restaurant, whether it’s following my books, or whether it’s buying a good quality ready meal, I want to be able to provide something for everybody. Some people won’t cook and some people say “you write books on feeding children so why are you doing ready meals?”. Well because those people only buy ready meals and why shouldn’t they have good quality ready meals so I try and touch everyone’s life whether they want to make a really nice family meal or something a little bit more exotic. It’s really helping people to provide better quality food for their children.

FS: What is your favourite meal? AK:

I like spaghetti with seafood and I have two recipes for that in my pasta book, which are both very delicious and both simple to make. I like mussels and prawns and all that kind of thing. I love pasta myself so writing a book about pasta was an absolute joy because it was just a good excuse to eat it every night. I didn’t hear a squeak out of my three children – they didn’t mind having pasta everyday. If it was anything-else they would have objected. They loved it. I love all kinds of food.

FS: Do you have any future projects in the pipeline? AK:

I’ve got a TV series that comes out next year, that’s a big project. I have a range of sources that has just launched, helping mothers to give their babies fresh food by combining the sauce with vegetables or freshly cooked fish so you’re combining a convenience with a freshly cooked product to give your baby better quality food, that’s really important to me right now. I’m probably going to do an App as well, an iPhone App on eating in pregnancy and feeding your baby and toddler. We’re also launching a whole range in America, a make it easy range for making baby food. There’s an awful lot going on!

200 g (7 oz) fusilli 2 tbsp light olive oil 1 onion, finely chopped 1 garlic clove, crushed 100 g (31/2 oz) orange pepper, cut into strips 100 g (31/2 oz) broccoli florets 1 medium courgette, sliced and cut into semi-circles 250 g (9 oz) salmon fillets 150 g (51/2 oz) crème fraîche 200 ml (7 fl oz) vegetable stock 150 g (51/2 oz) tomatoes, skinned, de seeded and cut into chunks 75 g (3 oz) Parmesan cheese, grated salt and freshly ground black pepper

Annabel says: This is a favourite recipe of mine, it’s a delicious combination of spring vegetables

and tender chunks of salmon. The sauce couldn’t be simpler - you just stir the ingredients together and heat through. Cook the fusilli according to the instructions on the packet. Heat the olive oil in a heavy-based saucepan and sauté the onion and garlic for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the orange pepper, broccoli and courgette and sauté for 6–7 minutes until tender, stirring occasionally.

FUSILLI WITH SALMON IN A LIGHT CHEESE SAUCE WITH SPRING VEGETABLES

Stir the crème fraîche and vegetable stock into the cooked vegetables and bring to a simmer. Stir in the chopped tomatoes and chunks of salmon and simmer for 2 minutes, then stir in the Parmesan and season to taste. Toss the drained fusilli with the sauce, taking care not to break up the chunks of salmon.

Meanwhile, cut the salmon into chunks, put in a saucepan, cover with fish stock and poach over a gentle heat for 3–4 minutes until cooked. Remove from the pan, strain and set aside.

TOMATO SAUCE WITH BUTTERNUT SQUASH AND RED LENTILS (Baby Recipe) Annabel says: This tasty tomato sauce is enriched with lentils and butternut squash. Lentils are a

good cheap source of protein. They also provide iron which is important for brain development. Butternut squash is rich in betacarotene which is important for growth, healthy skin and good vision. Its important not to continue to give smooth purees for too long or babies can get lazy about chewing so it’s a good idea to stir small pasta shapes into your baby purees. Heat the oil and sauté the onion, carrot and celery fro 5 minutes. Rinse the lentils and add to the pan. Add the butternut squash and sauté for 1 minute. Pour in the passata and water. Cover and cook over a low heat for about 30 minutes. Meanwhile cook the pasta according to the packet instructions. Drain. Remove the squash and lentils mixture from the heat and stir in the cheese until melted. Puree in a blender and then stir in the drained pasta.

Annabel says: You can also make this with minced chicken. When my son was a toddler I couldn’t get him to eat chicken but as he liked apple I made mini chicken balls with grated apple – and he loved them. These meatballs also make good finger food served without the sauce…

Preheat the oven to 180C. To make the turkey meatballs, heat the oil and sauté the onion for about 4 minutes, Allow to cool down and then mix together the sautéed onion, minced turkey (or chicken), breadcrumbs, grated apple , sage and thyme and season to taste. Put the mixture into a food processor and pulse for a couple of seconds. Using floured hands, form into about 24 meatballs . Arrange them on an oiled baking tray and cook for 10 to 15 minutes.

SPAGHETTI WITH PESTO Annabel says: Nothing tastes as good as home made pesto and it only takes minutes to prepare..

Simply put everything in a food processor and whiz together. This is also good on a Mozzarella and Tomato Salad. First toast the pine nuts in a dry frying pan until lightly golden. Stir them so that they don't burn. Remove from the pan and leave to cool. Cook the spaghetti in a large pan of lightly salted boiling water according to the packet instructions. Meanwhile, tip the Parmesan, garlic, parsley, basil, sugar and cooled pine nuts into a food processor and whiz until finely chopped. Slowly add the olive oil while the motor is whizzing. Add the water and season. Spoon into a small bowl. Drain the cooked pasta and put it back into the saucepan. Add 4â&#x20AC;&#x201C;5 tablespoons of pesto and toss together. Sprinkle with extra Parmesan before serving. (You can freeze any leftover pesto sauce )

We all want the best for our children - we want them to grow up into well adjusted adults who feel valued and respected. Our children, although they want to feel the latter, also crave to be heard, listened to and not judged. They generally want to talk to us when they fancy but for us parents it is often a matter of , ‘Look I am busy, tell me later’, ‘Go and do something else and we’ll discuss it at dinnertime’ or ‘Very nice darling’ dismissing what they are saying to us. Some of the children I have seen don’t have parents that have the time to listen to them – some hardly see their parents, and I work with them on ways that the child can use to get the attention of their parent. It’s ironic that these children have to teach their parents to be better communicators. I would look for a time during

the day when you are both relaxed and not engrossed in making the dinner or juggling three jobs at once. Also find a time when you are not going to be interrupted by other children or anyone else. Find out what they are doing and then make an appointment with them for when they have finished their activity so you have their attention 100 per cent. I often say to my oldest child, ‘When you have finished playing that game, please can we sit together so we can talk about your day’. And when this is greeted by moans, which are fairly short-lived, I sell the benefits of our time together - boost his self-esteem by telling him how wonderful he is and how proud I feel to be his mum. We sit and talk and discuss ‘life’ and I help him with his thoughts etc. With an older child you may need more of a dialogue like this: Parent, ‘Hi Mike, do you have a minute for me to talk to you. I can see that you are busy

Take as long as your child needs and don’t rush them. Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip

My first child, Robyn, was a undiagnosed breech baby which I had by natural delivery. The experience was horrific, my daughter required resuscitation and spent a period in intensive care. When she was discharged I was advised that she would need her hips scanned. I was not given any information why she needed this scan apart from the hospital suggested it for all breech babies . The scan proved normal and I never gave it another thought. I suffered PND and was so traumatized by the experience that I decided not to have another child. Ten years later when I found myself pregnant I was thrilled but naturally apprehensive. Siomha was born in January 2007 - The hospital was extremely busy and I was asked if I could leave as soon as possible. As my older daughter had been in the ICU I was unaware that Siomha should have had a physical check. Siomha was a delight and bonding was so much easier as I did not have the depression to cope with. I did notice little things about her such as a deep extra crease at the top of her leg, she appeared to hold one leg stiffly when she had her nappy change. When she started crawling I noticed she had an unusual crawl like a soldier commando crawling and Siomha when she started to pull herself up she often stood on her tippy toes. In hindsight she had all the classic signs of Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip but I had never heard of this condition. When Siomha started walking my mother thought she was limping and I took her to the GP. They immediately confirmed a full dislocation and one leg was shorter (as the femur had moved above her pelvis). We were devastated and I cried for weeks, I was so upset with myself for not

knowing the subtle signs of this condition. This condition, in 95% of cases, is 100% curable if detected and simple treatment starts in the first 12 weeks of the babies life. The longer it goes undetected the more extensive and life changing the condition becomes. At 21 months Her surgeon cut bone from her pelvis and used it to fashion a hip socket. She then spent 7 weeks in a cast from her chest to ankle. They are now planning to snap her femur to realign with pins and plates as the femoral head is smaller than it should be as it was dislocated for so long. In addition she will require her socket rebuilt when she is 4 and 9 years old. She will then start hip replacement in her 20's and will suffer pain from osteoarthritis for her entire life. With the support of STEPS Charity I have been leading a group of parents campaigning to improve early detection and treatment amongst health professionals and parents. The NHS have created the NIPE (Newborn Infant and Physical Examination) programme to improve detection and ask me to speak at the Royal College of Midwives Conference about the parent experience and what the consequences of late diagnosis are. "It is unacceptable that children are still being diagnosed late with conditions such as DDH," said Professor Adrian Davis, director of the NHS Newborn & Infant Physical Examination Programme. He said he is working with STEPS, parents and medical practitioners in order to "stop this unnecessary distress". Many children could have their lives completely changed by mums checking and raising their concerns with their gp. Signs to look out for are: * One leg appearing to be shorter than the other * An extra-deep crease on the inside of the thigh * Dragging one leg when crawling * Walking with a limp or waddle

Nicola’s Story Our daughter Lillie was born September 2008. I had a completely normal and straight forward pregnancy. Six days before her due date I went into labour, which was quite long. I had no real problems, she just didn’t seem to want to come out. After pushing for over an hour it was decided that I was to have an emergency c-section. She had progressed so far down the birth canal that she had to be pulled up by her leg (I personally think this is when the dislocation may have happened). She was thoroughly checked over before we left the hospital and nothing abnormal was detected. Lillie was a very happy and content baby. We took her along for her eight week check which is when the doctor discovered she had a ‘clicky hip’ . We were referred to the hospital for a scan. She was four and a half months old when she had the scan which did detect that she had a fully dislocated hip. A member of the peadiatric occupational department came to our home to speak to us and prepare us for the operation, looking at baby equipment such as car seats and prams as Lillie's legs would be cast quite far apart. We were in hospital two weeks later for the operation where Lillie had closed reduction surgery. This is where they inject a dye into the hip so the doctors can work with a camera to manipulate the hip back into the socket without the need to open her up. She also required a small incision into her groin to release a tendon. Lillie was then fitted with a hip spica, which is a full cast from chest to ankles which was to be worn for sixteen weeks. After the first couple of days with only one sleepless night, Lillie, my husband and myself all adjusted very well to having the cast on. She was just as happy as before - to her it was normal. Two weeks later Lillie had a CT scan under sedation followed by a check up and x-ray at eight weeks, which showed that everything was still in place and going well. After sixteen weeks we had to go back to hospital to have the cast

removed, which involved a general anaesthetic again as she had to stay still and so Lillie that they could scan the hip to make sure the procedure had worked. Everything was fine. Lillie had a check up and x-ray four weeks later and then again five months down the line. She was nine months old when the cast was removed, she crawled at eleven months and started walking at fourteen months. She is now twenty two months old and to watch her running around you would never believe that she even had a problem with her hip. She will have to go back into hospital every twelve months to have check ups and x-rays until she is about sixteen years old. Our experience has not been a bad one. Coping with Lillie with the cast on was relatively easy once we all adjusted. Looking back we got a lot of information from the internet and prepared ourselves pretty well. If we were to have another child I would definitely check for the signs of DDH, which once we were made aware of were quite obvious on Lillie, such as the extra crease at the top of her thigh/groin area and one leg appearing slightly longer than Lillie with cast removed the other. Lillie is a happy and healthy toddler who throughout all this has not been affected at all. She will enjoy a full and active future. 27

(Top Tip – consider clubbing together and buying a nappy cake. Made from rolled nappies arranged in tiers like a wedding cake, they are filled with useful baby gifts and make a fantastic centerpiece for the party that also doubles up as a gift)

4 Plan how you are going to get mum-to-be to the party

without spoiling the surprise. Often dad-to-be can be very helpful in getting mum out of the house for this! Give yourself enough time to get all the decorations up and for all the guests to arrive before the guest of honour.

5 Decide if you are going to play any games and how many Originating in the US and widely popular throughout North & South America, South Africa & Australia, Baby Showers are now increasingly gaining popularity and awareness here in the UK. But what exactly is a baby shower? No, it’s not some kind of strange ritual involving the bathing of the newborn in front of an audience! Rather, it’s a party for the mum-to-be usually held before the birth, to celebrate her imminent arrival. Much like a Hen Do, these parties involve getting the mum-to-be’s friends and family together for some fun before the baby arrives (although usually without as much alcohol involved!). Some baby showers are arranged with the knowledge and input of the mum-to-be, although it’s more usual for them to be organized by a close friend or family member as a surprise. A typical baby shower would be held for a few hours during the afternoon, at the home of the party organizer or mum-tobe (as long as someone else helps clear up afterwards!). Usually there would be some kind of catering (afternoon tea & cake and some light buffet food works particularly well); some party games (baby shower bingo is a fun, easy one but there are many to choose from); opening of gifts (not essential but as most people would buy a gift for a friend’s baby it’s a nice time to give it); but most importantly a chance for a good old gossip, lots of fun and to make mum-to-be feel special before the baby comes and she is no longer the centre of attention! Here are our top tips for a fabulous baby shower:

Get organizing in plenty of time – you ideally want to hold the baby shower about 6 weeks before the due date in case baby makes an early unexpected appearance! You’ll need to give guests some notice of the date as well and allow time for rsvp’s. (top tip: get people to rsvp by email rather than post – you’re likely to get a much speedier response!).

7 If you are hosting the party, make sure that you organize

the activities to the timescale you have decided upon. Give yourself enough time to offer drinks on arrival, get the games played, the food eaten and the gifts opened. You don’t want to cram too much in especially if the party is only intended to last for a couple of hours.

8 If you are going to be giving gifts at the party allow

enough time for the mum-to-be to open them – usually at least 30 minutes will be needed for this, more if there are a lot of guests.

9 At the end of the party it’s a nice idea to give a little favour gift to your guests as a thank you for coming (think grown up party bag!) There are plenty of options available for all budgets.

Make sure that someone is responsible for cleaning up afterwards – especially if the party is held at mum-to-be’s house!

Moan about ! MEN It all started one evening when Sue and I were having a glass of wine in the local pub... Sue told me about a mutual friend who was fed up because her husband hadn’t done anything for their tenth wedding anniversary, even though she organised something every year and this time she was going to leave it all to him. This turned out to be a mistake because, sadly, all she ended up with was a microwave curry in front of the TV!! This inspired Sue to purchase a domain name called moanaboutmen.com, but she sat on the idea and had not mentioned it to anybody until now, I loved the idea and after that chance conversation Moanaboutmen was born. We got to work, and with the help of a local developer designed the website. The site seemed to strike a chord, soon we were in magazines and national newspapers, and then came radio and TV work which was very exciting and a little daunting. Both Sue and I were in what seemed like another world but we loved the adrenalin rush it gave us. People in the media have been very surprised about how much publicity we have received, all this has been achieved by two women on their own without using any P.R. companies, I think we have been successful because we weren’t afraid to approach people we thought were of influence and give it a go. After one particular feature on Five News we were approached by a publisher and as a result a book based on material from

Should we discourage

role play?

There is little doubt that role play is a key element in a child’s development and not only helps them to burn off excess energy, but creates an understanding of the social world around them. However, many parents express concern that despite the greatest effort to provide a non-sexist approach to parenting, their children generally continue to adopt gender specific roles when playing, which raises the question of where this behaviour springs from – and should it be discouraged? From the earliest age there is often a clear distinction between girls’ and boys’ play and it is possible to argue that children choose their playmates and activities from a biological basis. However, research on the subject is inconclusive and such behaviour could easily be explained by the social messages around them. Children develop their identities through interaction with both adults and other children and gender discourse positions girls and femininity and boys and masculinity firmly at opposite ends of the spectrum. Therefore, it is hardly surprising that children try to position themselves into their own gender specific category and it often takes adult interaction to encourage children to explore different aspects of being either a girl or a boy. For example, females can be powerful and assertive and equally boys can be gentle and nurturing. Role play is perfectly natural and part of the innocence of childhood and whatever an adult’s reservation on their child’s chosen subject, the question remains as to whether they should intervene. There has been much debate over the years as to whether boys should be allowed to play with toy guns, balancing political correctness over the right to re-enact the roles of superheroes and even real life heroes which are continually presented to them through the media. The launch of a new range of HM Armed Forces toys by Character Options early last year caused considerable debate as to whether children should be encouraged to play with replicas of equipment used by the serving men and women of our country. While the HM Armed Forces range doesn’t actually include toy guns, it was suggested that providing boys with clothing and equipment modelled on the real thing, might be glorifying war. However, a guidance called ‘Confident, Capable and Creative: Supporting Boys’ Achievements’ issued by the Department for Schools and Families in early 2008 recognised that common starting points in boys’ play often involves characters with special powers or weapons, stating: “Creating situations so that boys’ interests in these forms of play can be fostered through healthy and safe risk-taking will enhance every aspect of their learning and development.” For generations boys have enjoyed boisterous military

inspired games involving lots of physical activity. In fact, evidence points to the fact that the play ideas posed by toys such as the HM Armed Forces range actually educate a positive disposition towards challenge, change and self-initiated learning. They also encourage co-operative play and team leading skills. Likewise, after years of women striving for equal rights, many mums step back in alarm when little girls reach for a toy ironing board or shopping bag. But realistically, for the majority of girls – as well as many boys too – one day these chores will be an every day factor in their lives, so why not let them enjoy the experience while they can. Just as boys like to mimic the male role of hunter gatherer, little girls gravitate towards homemaking and caring; and while they should be in no way led to believe that this is the only option open to them in life, there are many positive aspects to this type of role play too. A great way to fire up a child’s imagination is to provide them with a box full of household items from dressing up clothes to pots and pans. However, there are numerous role play toys on the market too which open doors to a world of imaginative role play and many have great educational benefits too, encouraging numeracy and literacy skills as well as helping children to develop cognitively. For example, HABA’s Mini-Shop not only has everything a budding shop-keeper could ever want from play food, shopping bags and even a sturdy wooden shopping trolley, but encourages children to write shopping lists, add up the cost of their purchases and give the correct change too. Also, HABA’s extensive range of play food actively encourages children to explore healthy eating options and opens discussion about what foods are good and those that should be eaten in moderation. This includes an array of wooden and fabric fruits and vegetables, meats and fish and also has the fun element of sweets and cakes and everyday fast food products too. Many children use role play to cope with their feelings and fears as well as expressing their understanding of the world around them. Playing at combat soldiers certainly doesn’t mean that a boy will grow up to be an aggressive adult and likewise a girl obsessed with playing ‘babies’ won’t necessarily rush into pregnancy at the first hurdle. Whatever form of role play a child embarks on parents should recognise the positive aspects of the game and rather than feeling alarmed or disapproving, can view the game as an opening for discussion and an opportunity to promote positive messages to their children.

Road Safety for Young Children How can you start helping your child begin to understand the basic principles of road safety? Flying Start has teamed up with children’s documentary specialists Child’s Eye Media to give you some key ideas for introducing the Green Cross Code to your child. The advice is based on the award-winning film, Street safety with Teigan, which was made in consultation with the government’s THINK! Road Safety Campaign. The film is one of four delightful films on the Gold Award-winning A Child’s Eye View of Keeping Myself Safe DVD (www.childseyemedia.com ) – essential viewing for children aged 3 – 8. Child’s Eye Media’s Educational Director, Linda Mort, writes: Children should never be allowed out on the roads without an adult until at least the age of eight or nine. It can take until age 10 or 11 for children to develop sufficient skills in judging distance and speed, although each child develops differently. (Child Accident Prevention Trust ). Developing crossing the road skills cannot be rushed, but should be a very gradual process, carefully managed over the years, and little by little enabling your child to become more independent. Because, of course, of the enormous volume of traffic on today’s roads, it is understandable that some parents try to ferry their children everywhere by car. Sadly, this can lead to some children never learning to cope with roads until they start secondary school, or even later. Lacking in experience and confidence, they can take dangerous risks, with obvious consequences. In the long run, it really is best to try and resist the temptation to wrap children in cotton wool.

Hold my hand

First and foremost for pre-schoolers is an understanding of the vital importance of always holding a grown-up’s hand. ‘Hold my hand’ is one of the key messages of the Children’s Traffic Club series of books, designed to be used with three and four year olds and their families. The books are free to all families in London, Scotland and many other authorities –www.trafficclub.co.uk/parents Reinforce this message by making ‘hand in hands’. Together, draw round, on card, and cut out, a hand each. Put your child’s ‘hand’ on top of yours and attach them at the top with a split pin. You could decorate them with felt-tipped pens to look like two styles of gloves. Organise other members of the family, including grandparents, to make ‘hands in hands’ with your child, too.

A third of all children hurt crossing the road said they didn’t stop before stepping off the kerb, and as many said they didn’t look (Child Accident Prevention Trust) Children love ‘teaching’ teddies and dolls - lay a skipping rope on the floor as the ‘kerb’, and quickly transform a doll or teddy into a string puppet by tying a piece of string to each arm and tying the other end to a small ruler. Just listen to your child instructing their ‘puppet’ to ‘stop at the kerb’!

A simple but effective way to get children to take ownership of safety messages is to encourage them to make up their own songs – just a repeated refrain and a nursery rhyme tune will do. Try ‘Hold my hand’ to the tune of ‘Twinkle, twinkle little star’ – repetitive , but it works!

Grandparents as influential as professional advisers on separation issues New guide helps them to make sure their grandchildren are provided for. Couples with children whose relationships are breaking up are as likely to discuss separation issues with their parents as they are with professional advisers, including solicitors. The influential role of grandparents is revealed today in a survey for Child Maintenance Options – the free and impartial information and support service. According to a YouGov poll of over 1000 separated parents with children aged 18 or under, 60% said they turned to their parents, siblings and friends for help and advice while only 27% talked to a solicitor. Notably grandparents are the most likely to be called upon of that group, with 30% of the parents surveyed saying they turned to their mums and dads.

With this in mind Child Maintenance Options is today publishing a new ‘Grandparents Guide to Child Maintenance’ explaining how they can help to make sure their grandchildren are properly provided for after divorce or separation. “More and more grandparents and other members of the family and friends of separating couples are calling our helpline, seeking guidance on their behalf,” says Janet Paraskeva, Chair of the Child Maintenance Options. “A quarter of those using our website are 55 and over and many are grandparents. As a result we have decided to prepare this

The guide is designed for Grandparents like Tony and Gwen. They recently helped their son David through his separation from the mother of his son. They knew about the Child Maintenance Options service and encouraged him to call and speak to an Options specialist, but they wanted to help him more. ‘We couldn’t give David any more advice on maintenance because we didn’t know what his options were,” Gwen said “We didn’t want to give him the wrong help as it might have just added to the confusion at what is already a difficult time.” Following his call to Options, David now has a successful maintenance arrangement in place. He and his ex signed a private agreement form which they got both their fathers to sign.’

Up to 150,000 people a year could be given a chance to live if more people knew first aid, says charity St John Ambulance, as it launches a hardhitting campaign to encourage more people to learn this vital skill. Thousands of people are dying each year in situations where first aid could have made the difference. This includes nearly 900 people who choke to death, 2,500 who asphyxiate from a blocked airway and 29,000 who die from heart attacks. First aid could make a dramatic difference in these situations, either through direct intervention, in the case of choking, or by recognising life-threatening signs, such as a heart attack, and caring for someone until medical help arrives. The startling figure is more than four times the number who die of lung cancer each year, the most common cause of death from cancer.

Startling lack of first aid knowledge Research commissioned by the charity has also revealed that: Nearly two-thirds of people (59%) wouldn’t feel confident enough to try to save a life A quarter (24%) would do nothing and wait for an ambulance to arrive or hope that a passer-by knows first aid. The charity is urging everyone to get a free pocket-sized guide featuring first aid skills that can help in five common life-threatening situations by texting LIFE to 85010. The message is supported by a dramatic new advertising campaign depicting these five situations in which first aid could have been the difference between a life lost and a life saved. The public are also encouraged to donate to the charity to help others become ‘the difference’.

Be the difference Sue Killen, CEO, St John Ambulance comments: ‘We believe that anyone who needs first aid should receive it. Our latest research shows that’s just not happening. We can’t rely on

other people to have the skills everyone should take the responsibility to learn first aid themselves. Armed with this knowledge we can all be the difference between a life lost and a life saved.’ Sue continues: ‘Around 2,500 people die each year from a blocked airway, but if someone had known the recovery position, lives could have been saved. We’re urging everyone to text to claim a free first aid guide today.’

A life lost – Guy Evans

The campaign is backed by Beth Chesney-Evans, who believes her son might be alive today if he had been given basic first aid. Guy Evans died in August 2008, when he was 17, after his motorcycle crashed near his home in Didcot, Oxfordshire. Beth Chesney-Evans comments: ‘Guy didn’t die because of a terrible head injury or massive internal bleeding. He had no injuries at all but died because his heart apparently stopped and he couldn’t breathe – and those are conditions that first aid is designed to deal with until the ambulance arrives. I’ll never know whether Guy could have survived; but because he didn't get any first aid, he didn’t have a chance.’ Beth continues: ‘I’m supporting St John Ambulance’s campaign because I want to give others the chance Guy didn't have. I don’t want him to have died in vain.’

The Co‐ed or Single Sex conundrum Words: Liam Butler, ISC Various studies have been conducted over the years on the merits of single sex education. However, ultimately it is up to the parent to decide which environment would best suit their child.

Just as there is a lot of be said for a school that tops the league tables year after year one must also remember that this might not suit every child. Not every child is the same, and the independent sector affords parents the opportunity to ‘shop around’ to discover a school that suits their child’s attributes. So, whatever a parent’s view is on single sex versus co-educational question there is a school to suit their choice. Parents are offered an array of options to consider including ‘boys only education’, ‘boys and girls taught separately’ as well as the more usual ‘co-educational’ set up. Parents are therefore advised to consider all types of schools when choosing the best education for their children. There is nearly twice the number of girls’ schools to boys’ schools in ISC membership yet with over 100 and 200 respectively it shows that there still is a lot of choice for parents both new and experienced to the sector. Most, if not all, schools will have open days allowing parents to visit the school to see exactly how they run and how their

child will fit into the community. Schools are happy to discuss the pros and cons of a single sex education as well as a co-educational one and it is certainly something that can be fully explored when you begin to narrow down your choice of school. Schools will understand that parents may have questions and reservations, and will be happy to discuss any concerns on this and a whole range of other issues which are important when choosing a school. The best course of action for any parent beginning their search for an independent school, single sex or otherwise, is to visit the ISC website www.isc.co.uk and click ‘School Search’. This search allows you to select your specific criteria in order to locate schools that are appropriate. Within this process you can select ‘Girls’, ‘Boys’ and/or ‘Co-ed’ schools. So, if you’re open to both styles of education you are able to click both boxes. The key in searching for a school is to limit your search only where necessary and not to discount hundreds of schools based on the fact that a single sex or co-educational education is an unknown quantity. Go ahead and request a prospectus; read inspection reports; pick up the phone; pay the school visit; ask questions! You will be pleasantly surprised.

David Finney from Sezitall ‘Says it all’ to When David Finney’s family building business found itself under crippling financial pressure thanks to the sharp downturn in the building industry, he knew that something had to give. And give it did, the family business which since 1902 had supported four generations of David’s family, finally had no choice other than closure. For David, he found himself at an unexpected crossroads in his life, and one which turned out to be the beginning of a whole new chapter. “At 49 I was faced with the prospect of starting another career – this was as much daunting as it was exciting. I had always been self employed and the prospect of working for someone else simply did not appeal and did limit my options somewhat. It was then that I guess I had my ‘eureka’ moment of what I could actually do, and where the Sezitall story really begins!” Some years earlier David and his wife, Teresa, had been hunting for a personalised bookcase for their son, Jack, and when they failed to find what they wanted, they had one made for him. Even back then, David saw the business potential in the idea. “My son absolutely loved the bookcase with his name JACK spelt on one side and LUFC (Leeds United Football Club) on the other. That coupled with comments from his friends who

wanted one too and positive feedback from other parents, we knew it was a nifty business idea.” Ten years on in 2007, and the nifty business idea was about to become a business reality. But before it did, David held a couple of focus groups with mums for their candid opinions, and extensively scoured the internet to verify that no one else did anything similar. Then, armed with the knowledge that

the idea still had legs, he secured the copyright of his design and set about getting the business well and truly off the ground. “After outsourcing product manufacture and building my website, I contacted as many online retailers specialising in kid’s furniture as I could find to see if they were interested in promoting the product.” Today, Sezitall shelving units can be purchased from the Sezitall website as well as from numerous online retailers. David has begun to expand his range, and in line with the football season and the forthcoming World Cup, he recently launched a ‘Football Crazy ‘collection whereby favoured football teams are spelt out on the units. David says, “The business is still young and is growing at a steady and manageable rate. I am building a reputation for good customer service and for providing great quality bookcases, so customers come back for more!” David continues, “One of the great things about the Sezitall unit is that it can be increased in height and more letters added at any time.” David works from his home in Cheshire and rents a small warehouse to hold stock. His business affords him the flexibility to see his family far more than when he worked for the family building firm. Between his work commitments, he is able to help out with day-to-day family things such as school runs and out of school activities. “Apparently, I am a dadpreneur! I never really knew what a dadpreneur was until I started Sezitall, but if successfully juggling work with family makes me worthy of that title, then it is a label I quite like! But I couldn’t run the business without the continued support of my wife and three wonderful boys.” The transition from helping to run a building business with a £15 million turnover to starting up and then running a children’s shelving business has been big, but now the foundations of Sezitall have been firmly laid, this family business is here to stay.
