It is my great pleasure to welcome you to this look back at the season in karting for 2013, a year that once again saw the emergence of some exciting new talents from whom we can expect great things in the future.

Il successo di piloti come il Campione KF, Tom Joyner, o quello di Max Verstappen che ha vinto il Campionato del Mondo in KZ a soli 15 anni, e il giovanissimo Campione KF Junior Alessio Lorandi, la maturitĂ e la disciplina che tutti e tre hanno dimostrato nel vincere i loro campionati, rafforza ancora una volta la mia convinzione che il karting rappresenta la piĂš completa preparazione al motor-sport che un giovane pilota possa ricevere. Le competenze apprese in una arena cosĂŹ ultra-competitiYD KDQQR VSHVVR FRVWLWXLWR LO WUDPSROLQR LGHDOH SHU XQD OXQJD H SURĂ&#x20AC;FXD carriera ai piĂš alti livelli.

The success of racers such as KF champion Tom Joyner and of Max Verstappen, who took the KZ World Championship at just 15 years of age, and the very young KF Junior Champion Alessio Lorandi, the maturity and discipline all three showed in winning their respective championships once again validates my belief that karting represents the most complete motor sport grounding any young driver can receive. Indeed, the skills learned in this ultra-competitive arena often provide drivers with the ideal springboard to a long and successful career at higher levels.

The further development of motor sport is a top priority for the FIA, and in particular the nurturing of grassroots competition. Karting at all levels forms a huge part of this work. With the help of CIK-FIA President Shaikh Abdulla bin Isa Al Khalifa it is my sincere wish that karting should become an even stronger force in the future. This is particularly important for developing motor sport nations where building a healthy and vibrant motor sport culture often begins with the junior categories and karting.

2013 has been another great season for karting. We have seen three new racers emerge as World Champions, showcasing the skills and determination which will no doubt lead them right to the top of the racing ladder in the years to come.

On the organisational side, WSK Promotion has made a very important impact over the season, with the overall standard of tracks and infrastructure improved for all events. We look forward to building on this progress in 2014 and to further developing this fantastic Championship.

Next season will see many more changes with entry fees reduced, reduction of the duration of meeting, new rules concerning tyres, and the introduction of a Wild Card for drivers who wish to participate in a single event of a championship that has several events. This should help further improve the competition, and attract new interest in karting around the world.

In the recent years the politic weight of Italy in the world of motorsport has increased extraordinarily. The importance gained is the ďŹ rst concrete result of the new politics of Automobile Club Italy, that allowed a change in gear and a complete revolution to place itself on the front row in the most important challenges and, most of all, to always be ready to face them. Our country earned a place of excellence in the world thanks to hard work that just started and that must continue over time to consolidate the position obtained. The world has a new image of Italian motorsport, one that beneďŹ ted from the strong contribution of some realities of absolute excellence that showed everyone how people can and must work. WSK Promotion is one of such realities that elicited a leap forward of our image worldwide. Its an undisputed leader in the organization and promotion of karting events. I have always followed the project carried out by Luca De Donno and his staff with particular interest and fondness since its early steps. This is a feather in the cap of the whole Italian motorsport.

This project started a long way back, but it has always looked forward, it kept setting and reaching more and more ambitious goals. 2013 has been a successful year for WSK Promotion in terms of the two international series WSK Master Series and WSK Euro Series, as well as of the CIK-FIA European and World Championships.

As I have often reminded, these yearbooks are not only editorial pieces but also memory and, as such, history tools. This organization continues under the best auspices of a story started in Maglie, in the province of Lecce (Italy) where it still has its headquarters, and that grew and branched out, ready to face the new challenges that 2014 will bring.

2013 has been an exceptional year to me, one that will stay in the history of karting as it has been marked by the much awaited agreement between CIK-FIA and WSK Promotion.

It has also been a tiring and challenging year, though, but at the same time one of professional and personal growth, which can be considered as the ending point of a path started back in 2006 with the birth of the WSK brand, and as the starting point of a new path to build together with CIK-FIA.

As regarding events planning, 2013 has been a record year that involved the organization of 18 international races all around the world. It has been an incredible experience that kept all the people working and collaborating to this project with bated breath, focused on getting the highest possible result. Coming back to karting is a return to the future for them. These F.1 drivers are still bound to karting for the most diverse reasons, and they project themselves ideally from this discipline to the coming International Motorsport seasons. Some of them are often back behind the wheel of a kart, after driving the most technologically advanced cars in the world. Others get their hands â&#x20AC;&#x153;dirtyâ&#x20AC;?, operating themselves on the two stages engine units. Some others, more simply, guide their kids that sit on the karts eager to follow their parentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; footsteps. All of them bring prestige as well as colour and personal stories to kart races all around the world: the lot of drivers with F.1 past is quite large both in WSK events and in the others CIK-FIA 2013 events. NELSON PIQUET started his extraordinary career from karting and became one of the most beloved and winning drivers of F. 1. His sixth-born Pedro Piquet entered the paddock of CIK-FIA races in 2013, making a successful debut in the CIK-FIA Academy Trophy. Nelson Piquetâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s opinion on nowadays karting follows: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Karting is where it all starts. It is the ideal starting point, as it gives more than what it costs. Karting today is extraordinary, compared to when I started. Now they have telemetry, which might have helped a lot of experience-less drivers in F.1, but it is ideal in karting to check on those drivers that believe they can do whatever they want on track. The main advantage of karting is that you normally do not get hurt in these races. Karts are designed to forgive a lot and impacts rarely have consequences. This cannot grant the right of doing excessive moves though. Careful controls have to be in place at races to avoid manoeuvres that might develop in wrong behaviours for the young drivers. It is important to teach a serious racing discipline before the youngsters start behaving in the same way once they get on single seaters. Life within a working environment like a racing team is what makes young drivers grow. Working schedules, sportive and technical rules to respect and being part of an organization in which everyone works for a common goal help youngsters becoming adults and reliable persons. I started working to a new activity after I quit racing at 40. I set up a company that works with similar criteria and it grew over time. Kids need to learn these rules since the beginning in a growth moment that goes beyond their driving careerâ&#x20AC;?.

JAIME ALGUERSUARI is in love with karting and in 2013 he made it to the start of both WSK and CIK-FIA World Championship held in Varennes. Following his very early experience with Toro Rosso, the 23 years old Spaniard wants to put Motorsport at the center of his interests: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Karting gives an exceptional feedback. Wheel to wheel racing can take place in F.1, but it is not a shoulder to shoulder challenge with rivals, as only karting allows. This makes karting races very fun regardless what the end result might be. Even if one lacks the performance needed to win, taking part to the races is still worthy just to feel the competition. I had utter respect for that dozen drivers that were competing for the victory in the CIK-FIA World Championship ahead of me in Varennes. Being only 2 tenths off them was already quite rewarding to me. Taking part in the UDFH DV KDSSHQHG LQ 6DUQRÂˇV :6. The habit of hitting rivals has to be eliminated before moving to cars, where no contacts are allowed. Disciplinary actions are a serious way to get this: 15 years old kids can race on cars, therefore they must have assimilated correct behaviours before then. Karting is a really competitive environment. Currently the front and the back rows of starting grids are separated by half a second on the single lap. Technical aspects have therefore gained more and more importance, which directed drivers to work more closely with their mechanic. The feel of driving, learning to make good starts etc, all the basic elements of racing are present. So in my opinion, someone who has not driven in karts will take more time to adapt and to perform well in a racing car. In other words, I see karting as a necessity. Season 2013 hallmarked WSK Promotion has been an intense, very intense year indeed. One that has been lived not only on the front of the International Championships WSK Euro, Master Series and Final Cup, but also – for the first time ever – on that of the as much challenging, in terms of organization and promotion, of the International CIK-FIA events like the European Championships and World Championships. This challenge for WSK Promotion was eventually turned into a good victory on the field as the company got an unanimous approval on all the circuits of Europe and beyond. The challenge started in February and relentlessly continued for ten months in a row all the way through November in a flat out tour de force that paid off with the results and success obtained in all the venues. This was mainly due to the very good number of drivers that enthusiastically and professionally took part in the races and populated the paddock of all the rounds until the final challenging exit in Bahrain. Year 2013 has been virtually lived in an apnea. It has been a really intense

season, once again one that brought out a lot of talents and directed them towards more and more ambitious goals. Some of these were very young drivers ready to take the challenge of higher categories, while others prepared themselves at best ahead of a move to motor-racing and to some new sportive adventures. This is in fact the mission of WSK Promotion, the company that in its eight year of business kept on delivering the best possible organization and promotion of the events with the objective of offering the best setting to constructors, teams and drivers to grant them the chance of conveying their best and of coming to the fore as they deserve. Sportive season 2013 started with a mix of rounds of WSK Master Series and WSK Euro Series which lead to the rounds of the European and World CIK-FIA Championships. The ﬁrst reached its conclusion with the WSK Final Cup held in Castelletto, a week after ﬁnal round of the Italian Championship organized by WSK Promotion. The Briton Tom Joyner has been racing with team Chiesa Corse on Zanardi-TM in 2013. He won the last round of the CIK-FIA World Championship in KF held in Bahrain and secured the world title closing his season with a crescendo. Despite ending equal on points with Ben Hanley (Art GP), Joyner got the title thanks to his placings as he got the win in Bahrain as best result, while Hanleyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best score was the third place obtained in Brandon. The driver ďŹ elded by Dino Chiesa was not new to prestigious results as he has been close to the KF1 World title in 2012 when he won all four ďŹ nals of the round of Macau.

Alessio Lorandi is an Italian karting talent. In this season he and his younger brother Leonardo have been the top drivers at Baby Race, the team led by their father Sandro. Year 2013 has been his last in KF Junior and, after winning the WSK Master Series title, he also won the KF Junior World Championship thanks to two second places obtained in Ortona and in the tight ďŹ nal of Bahrain. The Norwegian driver Emil Antonsen brought the second title of the year to Danilo Rossiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s team DR Racing Kart, following the one won by Riccardo Negro in WSK Euro Series. Antonsen won the CIK-FIA KZ2 European Championship at the end of the two rounds of Wackersdorf and Genk. He ended fourth in Germany, at Wackersdorf, at the end of a good recover from the seventh place, and gained the podium in Belgium with the second place following Tiene but proceeding Johansson, overhauling the latter in the classiďŹ cation by a point. Antonsen and DR ended second in the KZ2 World Cup held in Sarno in 2012.

The International CIK-FIA KF Super Cup was won by Karol Basz in Sarno. The Polish driver in force at Tony Kart has been dominating the weekend since practice on Tony Kart-Vortex. In the Final â&#x20AC;&#x201C; race run in a joint event with the ďŹ rst round of the KF Junior World Championship â&#x20AC;&#x201C; he had to face Nielsen on Kosmic, but in the ďŹ nal laps he managed to fend off the attacks of the Danish driver and clinched the win. Riccardo Negro collected another important title after winning the WSK Final Cup last year. The very young Eliseo Martinez Merono, ďŹ elded by the Sicilian team Gamoto Racing on CRG/Hero-LKE, was at his second year in 60 Mini and managed to win the WSK Master Series run in four rounds and the WSK Euro Series run in two rounds held in Italy. Martinez got the WSK Master Series title thanks to the victory collected in La Conca and the double win in Precenicco, while he dominated WSK Euro Series with three wins and a second place in the PreďŹ nals and Finals of La Conca and Sarno.

He has been ďŹ ghting for the KF Junior World Championship until the last round in Bahrain. After winning the ďŹ rst round in Sarno (Italy) on Tony Kart-Vortex run by team Morsicani, Pulcini ended fourth in Bahrain in consequence to the 10 seconds time penalty handed to Nikita Mazepin and therefore he was stripped of the world title that was in his hands before the sanction given to the Russian driver. Despite of this result, Pulcini has been one of the strongest drivers in the World Championship campaign. Leonardo Pulcini also won the ACI-CSAI and Ferrari Driver Academy Federal Supercorso on Formula Abarth in 2013.

CIK-FIA & WSK PROMOTION The three CIK-FIA World Championships and the four European CIK-FIA Championships have been promoted and organized by WSK Promotion for the first time ever in 2013. This important achievement for the structure led by Luca De Donno has been ratified by FIA and CIK-FIA ahead of 2013 sportive season. Here are the thoughts of FIA President Jean Todt, at the start of this new project: “For the first time CIK-FIA has a promoter. The decision to entrust WSK Promotion the task of organizing the World and European championships is the best choice indeed for the future of karting”. CIK-FIA President, Shaikh Abdulla bin Isa Al Khalifa, commented as follows: “We can be optimist for the future of karting: the decision to give Luca De Donno the task of organizing the main events can only benefit the sport.”

The importance of this decision has also been highlighted by CIK-FIA Vice President, Kees Van de Grint: “We believe we are on the right path, this is a positive change that will certainly deliver results starting from 2013.” WSK Promotion’s President, Luca De Donno showed his satisfaction on the agreement with CIK-FIA in this way: “Ratifying the agreement with FIA for the promotion of their championships has been an enormous satisfaction for WSK. This is certainly a huge responsibility and an interesting challenge. The objective is to implement a uniﬁed platform and devise modern formats that can meet the interest of spectators. Our duty is to relaunch karting, as done for WSK, and provide this discipline with a professional and modern image.”
