OUR PETS Deserve The Best

grew up wishing I would have a dog of my own one day. When I was in grade school, my family had a Springer Spaniel named Dylan. We then had a Cocker Spaniel named Buster after we had to put Dylan down after his great 13-year life. We had Buster up until my junior year of high school before his tremendous lifespan came to an end. By the time Buster was gone, I knew I wanted to own a dog eventually. My goal was to achieve what my parents had done with our family dogs. I wanted to give them the best possible life because that is what animals deserve. However, I never would have expected to be sitting here telling you stories about two cats. Believe it or not, since Buster left my family, I have only had cats as pets. While I still have a specific affinity for dogs, I have grown to love the feline quite a bit. This is thanks to two fantastic specimens that have come into my life over the past few years. Not only have I enjoyed their company, but they have taught me the importance of treating your pets properly and with as much respect as you would a human. The first tale is the one of Furby, who belonged to one

of my former roommates. Furby was a Spynx cat who was bought off of Facebook almost a year ago. When he was purchased, my roommate was told by the previous owners that he was only five or six-years-old. However, after taking him to the vet, we learned that Furby was actually closer to 11 or 12-years-old. So, your first lesson is that people do exploit animals in online marketplaces. Much like Furby was exploited for a few extra dollars. Furby's bizarre tale does not end there though. My roommate was told by the previous owners that they got him from a random patron of Costco in West Fargo. Per my roommate, the former owners said a man walked up to them in the store and asked, "Do you want a hairless cat?" Whether or not that story is true will never be known, but it only adds to the rather unbelievable history of this hairless cat. On top of that, the previous owners told my roommate that they were selling Furby because he was "too loud". He apparently meowed too much. After taking him to the vet, we found out why Furby was "too loud." He came to our home with an ear infection in both ears, as well as a serious

infection in EVERY SINGLE one of his teeth. Therefore, Furby had to have all of his teeth pulled, leaving him with only gums. Not only that, but the vet said he was only recently declawed, which could be seen by the holes in where his claws used to be. For those who do not know, declawing an older cat can be harmful considering the longer recovery time. So, your second lesson is that people mistreat and neglect their animals. Besides all of that adversity, Furby was one of the most personable and loving cats I have ever encountered. He was always the first to come and snuggle up in a warm blanket and he was not shy about wanting to rub up against my beard at 3 a.m. While I hated it sometimes, I knew Furby just wanted love. Love that he was denied for so long, so I always obliged him. My girlfriend and I recently moved out of that apartment, leaving Furby with his owner. And I can honestly say I think about and miss him every single day. He was that amazing of an animal. So, your third lesson is that pets want to be loved and can reciprocate that love. Luckily, we have a cat of our own to try and fill the void left behind by Furby. After having

Furby in our lives, we knew we wanted to adopt a cat who needed a home. Thankfully, Homeward Animal Shelter's process of adopting an animal is extremely easy and efficient. Due to that, we were able to get a cat shortly after we moved to our new place in Downtown Fargo. Mylo is the name of our new feline buddy. He's still just a little kitten, but he already wants attention and love. According to Homeward, Mylo and his brothers and sisters were found alone without their mother. While it is incredibly sad to hear that, we cannot wait to give Mylo a good, full life. We're both extremely excited to have him. If you are thinking about getting your own fur-ever friend, please visit the various animal shelters in this area first! Our animals deserve the best, much like we humans do. To deny them of that is unfair and inhumane and no animal is deserving of that. So, be sure to give your dog an extra belly scratch or your cat a nice itch behind the ear when you get home. Show them that you love them that much more. All The Best,

The biggest thing to look for in a new animal is one that will fit your lifestyle.

"The biggest thing is that they’re looking at an animal that’s appropriate for their lifestyle. Some people see a picture and go, ‘That dog is so cute. I want it.’ Yeah, but it’s not a good fit for your lifestyle because you either don’t have enough time for it or it has too much energy." - Clyde

Prepare to be surprised.

While you need to keep in mind your lifestyle, you might fall in love with a dog you'd never expect. "Be open-minded that you might come in looking for a border collie but you might walk out with the small poodle mix." Klefstad

Take your time introducing a new animal into a household.

"People need to always be careful anytime they’re bringing in any new animal, regardless of where they get it from. These are animals that you are bringing into your home and you do need to assume that there’s always a potential that they may not do well with your children so keep a close eye on your kids whenever you bring home a new cat or dog and the same with other animals." - Clyde

Make sure you can afford a new pet.

It is $109 to adopt a cat and $169 to adopt a dog but the costs go far beyond that. "If you’re looking at getting a puppy or kitten, the adoption fee will only cover the start of their costs. They’ll need a lot of boosters, spay and neuter. Sometimes, the unexpected happens and there’s an emergency so making sure that you have an emergency fund in case something happens to your animal so you’re not in the position of, ‘I got this animal and I can’t afford treatment so now I need to return it to the shelter.’" - Clyde

Many of the adoptable dogs are coming from the nearby reservations.

"There’s a lot of poverty on the reservations and there are no vet clinics on any of the reservations, to my knowledge. They just don’t have the resources to spay or neuter their animals. A lot of the animals are housed outdoors, which means if you have animals that aren’t spayed or neutered and they’re housed outdoors with other animals, you end up with a lot litters of puppies that are being born and then those puppies procreate and you have hundreds of dogs that are homeless and they’re exposed to disease because of the number of dogs that are there and they’re not vaccinated." - Clyde

local shelters The shelters fill a vital need in the community. "The first year I was here full-time, which was 2007, 775 cats and 120 dogs were euthanized in the pound. Last year it was 45 cats and 10 dogs. It’s a huge drop in euthanasia rates in the pounds and the animals that were euthanized either had extreme injuries or illnesses." - Clyde

Just because the animal comes to a shelter, they're not necessarily damaged or a mutt.

"People need to not assume that every dog or cat in the shelter is either broken or damaged in someway and that they’re not mutts. We get in quite a few purebred dogs or dogs that they may be mixed breeds but they may be mixed breeds that people pay hundreds of dollars for at the pet store. For example, right now, we have a purebred standard poodle and we have a half basset/half dotson. ... We also get tons of puppies, especially from the reservation. They are mixed breed dogs but if people are looking for puppies, we generally have puppies. With cats, we do get some purebred cats, not extremely often, but we get pretty much every color. Some of them are declawed if they prefer that." - Clyde

In 2017, the Homeward Animal Shelter adopted out 864 animals and transferred an additional 42 to other rescues.

To date, in 2018, they have adopted out 362 animals.

There are a couple of terms about therapy pets you should (and one that every pet owner should know about.) Pet Partners: National organization that certifies therapy pets. petpartners.org Therapy Pets of the Red River Valley: The local chapter of Pet Partners. memberplanet.com/tprrv Canine Good Citizen Test: A test you have to pass before becoming a therapy dog. In this test, the dog must pass a number of tests, including you leaving the room and the dog staying put. American Kennel Club: The American Kennel Club is dedicated to upholding the integrity of its registry, promoting the sport of purebred dogs and breeding for type and function. They advocate for the purebred dog as a family companion, advance canine health and well-being, work to protect the rights of all dog owners and promote responsible dog ownership. They put on the Canine Good Citizen Test. akc.org READ Dog: This stands for Reading Education Assistant Dogs. Norman volunteers at local schools and libraries where he acts as a READ dog. Kids will pick out a book and read to the dogs. Pup cup at Dairy Queen: A small cup of ice cream at Dairy Queen in Moorhead that Norman LOVES. (He prefers to eat it with a spoon though.)

We talked with Tina Erickson and Norman, her five-year old Yorkshire Terrier, about some of the stories she's experienced while volunteering as a service dog. For the last four years, Norman has worked in local schools and hospitals making other people feel better. In her words... "There was one boy named John. John called Norman his best friend. Norman loved to go in there and they played and played. I had to learn with John that we had to go in there last because Norman would do his thing and then he’d want to go back and visit John. John passed away a couple weeks ago but this was Norman’s first best friend. They had little iPads so they’d do little pictures and if John’s mom wasn’t there, Norman and John would play and play. It was a good experience for Norman. He had so much fun. Now, the room that we saw John in, Norman keeps wanting to go in that room but John has passed away. Dogs grieve just like people do so he doesn’t understand that John is gone. "There was another child that had some sort of wound and he had to learn to walk again.

They like to take Norman for walks in the hallway so we started out in a wagon and then the child would scoot on the scooter, as long as Norman was with. Pretty soon, they said that he had to walk. If Norman was there, the child would walk. That was pretty fun to have Norman there to help the child walk again." About Therapy Dogs Norman had to go through a strict training program to become a certified therapy dog. The certification came through Pet Partners, a national organization dedicated to training and certifying therapy animals. Erickson and Norman did their basic obedience training at Lucky Dog in Detroit Lakes before passing her canine good citizen test and finally passing the test to become a therapy animal when Norman was 1.

I've often heard it said that Disney World is the happiest place on Earth. Well, I have some issues with that. I actually think it might be Doggy Depot in Moorhead. I say that based off my dog's reaction every time I drop him off and how well he sleeps after an eventful day at doggy daycare. So, I decided to get to the bottom of this to see if it truly is the happiest place on Earth or, at the very least, in Fargo-Moorhead. That's why I present to you this totally made up diary from my dog Fitz with real-life thoughts from Doggy Depot co-owner Becky Black.

Dear dad, I played so much yesterday! It was great hanging out with all of my new friends. I really like that everything thing is so clean, despite all the mess that we make. – Fitz "When a dog comes in, it settles down for a couple of minutes," said Black. "Usually, the regulars are able to quiet down right away. We just don’t want them to get smothered right away. There’s always a staff with the big and little dogs. At 11:30, they start going down for nap time until 1 and then they come back out and play. Then the owners start coming from 3:30-6:30. "We have staff that’s always cleaning. We have a cleaner every other day and we pressure wash that whole area outside. They spray the cleaner and pressure wash it every other day. The opposite day, we still hose it down. We’re pretty big on cleaning. You have to have a clean place to have dogs."

Dear dad, I sure missed you last weekend but the kennel was really comfortable and I enjoyed having my own space. – Fitz

Dear dad, Some of these dogs are real loud. I'm not sure what their deal is but the staff handles it really well and makes sure that everybody plays nice. – Fitz

"The only difference in boarding and daycare is that they’re spending the night," said Black. "They’re still interacting with the dogs. They still go down to eat. They have separate kennels. They eat at about 5:30 and after resting their stomachs for 30 minutes, they’re so tired from being here all day and from all the interaction, they usually go right to sleep. I have staff who come back every night of the week between 8-10 so the last time they get taken out is usually a quarter to 10. During the week, I’m usually here around 5:45 a.m."

"We do have dogs who are vocal and we work on barking," said Black. "If they don’t listen verbally, we do spray them with a spray bottle. If they’re being naughty or too crazy, they’ll get a timeout. They’ll go in a kennel for 20 or 30 minutes if they did anything too bad."

About Doggy Depot Doggy Depot has been open for 13 years. They offer dog daycare and boarding and are open seven days a week. "It’s a fun and different experience for the dogs," said Co-owner Becky Black. "It’s fun seeing the improvement in the dogs. This summer is shaping out to be really hot. What's a safe temperature to go running with my dog? - Sincerely, Me and Rover are getting swole this summer

Good job for wanting to get fit! I, myself, use the heat as an excuse to lay on the couch and watch a movie! There are many dogs who should do the same, such as bulldogs, pugs and other short-nosed breeds. There really is no specific temperature that is too high, although the 90s is a bit risky. What’s more important is the amount of humidity. This makes it much harder to cool down. On a really hot and humid day, I would recommend going for a run after the sun goes down and the temperatures start to drop a bit. If your dog is already fit, they will be more able to handle higher temperatures and longer runs, but the less-fit Rovers should take it easy.

I just got a new kitty and his claws are crazy sharp. Do people still declaw cats? - Sincerely, Tired of being a pin cushion Declawing cats is going out of style. It is purely a cosmetic procedure for our own comfort. Luckily, there are a lot of other ways to prevent yourself from turning into a pin cushion. You can purchase rubber nail caps that glue onto the nail – this protects your furniture AND your skin! They are easy to apply and come in many fun and sparkly colors. Cat claws are also very easy to trim and, if you start them out young, you should be able to do it solo.

Use good quality flea/tick and heartworm preventatives! Products purchased from your veterinarian are guaranteed to be safe and effective. There are an unbelievable amount of counterfeit products out there right now that can be extremely harmful to your pet and their packaging looks so similar to the real product, it’s scary. If you don’t purchase it from your vet, there is a good chance it is counterfeit and a 100 percent chance the manufacturer will not stand by their product if there is a problem. Trust your veterinarian – they know and recommend what’s best for your pet.

I'm allergic to cats but I love them so! What can I do to help out my allergies? - Sincerely, I'm so conflicted

Well you could bathe them every day in a dander-reducing shampoo, but that doesn’t sound fun, healthy or feasible, does it?! Depending on how bad your allergies are and what symptoms you experience, there are many over-the-counter products that can help with itchy eyes, runny noses or rashes. If you are more sensitive, visiting an allergist for hyposensitization is a good idea. Most cat allergies are to the skin dander or saliva. Bathing frequently, if the cat tolerates it, can be helpful. It is also wise to vacuum often, wash sheets and blankets frequently and wash your hands immediately after interacting with the cat. Having a cat allergy of moderate severity myself, I also find that I am more sensitive to certain breeds, and even colors, of cats. You may want to visit friends’ homes that have cats and spend some time with different ones to see which ones you tolerate best.

My dog is 12-years old and has really been slowing down. How do I know when it's finally time to put her down? - Sincerely, My heart is broken

This is such a difficult question, but one we veterinarians get asked on almost a daily basis. The short answer is this…you WILL know when it is time. The number of clients who have asked this question of me, and I gave that answer to, is immeasurable. They didn’t know how they would know, and it was not something I could fully explain (although I try my best), but they woke up that day and they knew. You will make the right decision if you are keeping your pet’s needs above your own. It is very hard for us emotionally to let our beloved companions go, but at that stage in their life, it should not be about our hearts and emotions, it should be about the animal’s comfort and peace. If your dog is in pain and you’ve tried every medication offered; if she’s so confused she can’t find her way to the food bowl; or if he won’t even eat his very favorite non-vet-approved snack, then you have to give serious consideration to what their quality of life is like at that time. When your best canine friend loses interest in your relationship and prefers to sleep rather than greet you after work, or come running when he hears the treat jar open, then it is time to start thinking about the good days versus the bad days. Keep track of this for a week or two. If the bad days outnumber the good days, it is time to consider euthanasia. Remember, this decision must always be made for the benefit of the pet, NOT the humans.

I have a six-month-old and a two-year-old. Any suggestions on breaking my new pet into my household?

I want a dog so bad but I enjoy my free lifestyle. What are some other things I should consider before getting a doggo?

Coming from a mom of 2 children that are 2 years and 4 months apart in age, I would have told you to WAIT on the new pet! Now there are a few supermoms who can do this successfully, but if you are like me, it can become a hot mess and unfortunately, the non-human is usually the one that suffers. Pets require a lot of time and attention, especially when they are babies. So many things can go wrong when you are not paying attention, but since you have already jumped in, I would recommend developing a strict schedule for the pet as far as meal time, outdoor play and housetraining. Crate training is also extremely helpful. The crate is a safe place where pets can be separated from children so no unfortunate accidents occur. Under absolutely NO circumstances should pets ever be left alone with children. Even the nicest, most loveable, and reliable pet can react to pain or fear with a bite. Introducing kids and pets in a supervised and calm setting for short periods of time usually works best.

Getting a dog is not the same as buying a trampoline or the latest gaming console. When you are done playing, it still needs your time and attention to become wellsocialized and a good citizen. It also needs you to provide food, water and shelter EVERY SINGLE DAY to keep it alive. Are you willing to give up happy hour after work to go home and let your dog out, feed him and play with him? Do you have friends who are willing to babysit when you have to travel for work, or do you have the funds to board your pet? Are you willing to keep your house clean so your dog can’t chew up items that could be harmful? Can you afford the basic wellness care? Do you have an emergency fund ($500-$1,000 minimum) to provide the necessary care in the event of a sudden illness or accident? Owning a dog is a BIG responsibility, but it can be incredibly rewarding if you are all in! Being prepared up front leads to more fun and less stress in the future.

A significant portion of the world’s population wears glasses, and I got my first pair (red wire frames) in 2nd grade. Being the bookworm and huge Harry Potter fan I was (and still am), I was thrilled to get glasses because I’d have better vision and be like Harry Potter! Present day, I see the whole concept of wearing glasses so differently. I fortunately didn’t have problems with getting bullied or teased as a kid for wearing glasses. However, two good friends of mine, Josh Legg and his girlfriend Amanda Egenes, both got glasses in elementary school and 40 | JULY 2018 | FARGOMONTHLY.COM

were teased for their specs. Josh said he couldn’t read the board from the first row in class, and he told me, “I was skeptical about wearing glasses at first, but when I could see more clearly, I was hooked. Over the years I was teased all the way through school and I didn’t let that bother me.” Amanda, initially not excited about getting glasses and afraid of being teased, said, “The nervousness went away when I saw all the different frames there were to choose from, but I did have to watch

how hard I played during gym and recess because I couldn’t break them. Since then, my glasses have been a part of me. I currently wear a pair with deep purple frames because that’s my favorite color. So I use them almost as an accessory that I just wear every day.” Local photographer, Kristina Coyle, also provided input, saying, “Just like you wouldn’t make fun of someone for any other medical reason, glasses are necessary. But they can look cool while serving a purpose.” Kristina said that her 7-year-old son got his first pair of glasses recently and that he was scared of getting made fun of. When the day came for her son to pick out his first glasses, Kristina and her husband stayed positive and encouraged their son. He chose a pair of Nerf glasses that his mom says looks so handsome on him. These days, I have black Giorgio Armani glasses and recently got a pair of Coach glasses. er demons come out at night. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know what sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s seen or been through but I know the night time scares her. When the shadows creep across our back lawn and the swings gently rattle, the tail that whacks me during the day out of pure joy falls somber and still at dusk. When she looks out the window and watches the tree branches come alive at night, Bella raises her hackles and a deep rumble emanates from her

throat. I tell her it’s okay, that she doesn’t have to sleep outside in the cold ever again. She looks at me and smiles, walks over and sits down asking for comfort only I can give. I’m her person. And she’s my dog. In the morning when the world is safe her tail thumps softly against the bed and the corners of her mouth curl up when I open one eye. If I open two eyes, she’ll come over and greet me with a morning tongue bath. She loves me—A LOT. Well, maybe some of it is just separation anxiety but I don’t care, it feels like love. She keeps the driver’s seat warm for me until I get back and makes sure I’m never lonely while I pee. My life is so much happier with Bella in it each day, each night I’m reminded that she is still adjusting to life as a family dog. Bella is a rescue dog from Turtle Mountain Animal Rescue, the organization in North Dakota I have had the privilege to be a part of for going on three years. I wasn’t looking for another dog when something in me spoke up and wanted Bella. I’d been on a team that has moved nearly two thousand dogs in the last few years before her, so why her? We already have a big dog, two little kids and a teenager, I didn’t have a deep rooted desire to own a beefcake pit bull-ish looking canine either.

with joy as she runs and rolls through the yard and learning about her as an individual rather than a stereotyped breed has brought me a profound sense of happiness I never expected. Someone asked me recently if I have regrets about taking her in, the hungry pit bull that tried to eat a porcupine and lived to tell about it. I thought about how our life has changed now that there are seven of us, and I couldn’t come up with one regret. Bella has not been a burden or a troublemaker. She’s a lover who is gentle with our little kids, mellow and unobtrusive then playful like a puppy. She’s a good dog. A great dog. A perfect fit for us. Although she was definitely not what I was looking for, it seems she’s just what I need. For me as much as her, rescue matters. Because of Keith Benning at Turtle Mountain Animal Rescue, Bella is alive and part of my family today. Now it’s my turn to give back. I was going to spend 2018 writing slutty romance novels, but there is a project that needs me more. Rescue Matters, the story of how a small team in North Dakota saved more than four thousand dogs in four years. My book is a work in progress; I plan to have it out in late 2018 and will donate 50 percent of all the profits back to Keith at Turtle Mountain Animal Rescue.

So I guess The Dog Whisperer is right when he says, “You don’t get the dog you want, you get the dog you need.” Being a part of her growth and recovery, seeing her spirit fill

With that said, I love to cook for vegans. Unfortunately, that’s not always the wisest way for me to spend my time in the kitchen, considering that most folks in our region are far from being vegan. As a business owner in the FM area, I realize that the vast majority of our clientele would prefer to eat meat based items rather than plant-based. Regardless, I believe that the vegan consumer is one

Serves 4 that is not only growing in population, but will not be slowing down anytime in the near future. So, as a business owner, I see a long term financial gain in incorporating a plant based concept into my business model. This topic has a way of becoming political very quickly. I prefer not to go down the road of whether or not a plant-based diet will save the world. Instead, I prefer to have a discussion of physical and mental well-being that can come from a reduction of meat consumption. I believe that a middle of the road compromise of meat and plant consumption (AKA moderation) is key. There are so many creative ways to prepare vegetables and grains and many natural approaches and techniques. I would prefer not to cater to the vegan patron who, for some reason, always wants their plant-based foods to resemble meat. If this can be done in a natural way, great. If not, I’d rather not cook it. Cauliflower is a great example of a vegetable that is being used in place of meat items. It has the proper texture that allows it to stand in for dishes such as fried chicken. A country style flour dredging with a buttermilk substitute (coconut milk, cashew cream, thickened soy milk, etc.) can give cauliflower a look and mouth feel that gives your palate a textured dining experience that can rival a carnivorous meal. I will always enjoy meat-based dishes. Classic cooking is part of who I am and always will be. Moving forward however, I cannot ignore the growing mass of “would be” vegan patrons who are begging restaurants to accommodate them. It may take some time but eventually more restaurants, like mine, will be offering up a wider selection of plant based options. This is American capitalism. Therefore, it’s a matter of ensuring that restaurant owners ultimately see some financial prospect in doing so.

Celery Ribs, medium diced ½ cup Green Cabbage, thinly sliced 1 cup Granulated Sugar 1 ¾ cup Cider Vinegar 1 tsp. Dry Mustard ½ tsp. Tumeric ½ tsp. Fresh Ginger, minced ¼ tsp. Ground Cinnamon ¼ tsp. Chili Flakes

Preparation • In a large mixing bowl combine corn, bell peppers, onions, celery and cabbage. Sprinkle mixture with ¼ cup kosher salt. Mix well and refrigerate mixture overnight. The next day remove vegetable mixture from refrigerator and drain excess water. Place mixture in a medium to large sized sauce pan and add remaining ingredients. Cook on medium heat. Simmer until liquid is thickened, approx. 30 minutes. Season with salt to taste. Spread mixture on a baking sheet and allow to cool. Refrigerate until needed.

For the Cauliflower Ingredients

• 8 ea. Cauliflower Florets, medium sized • ½ cup Flour, all purpose • 1 can Coconut Milk

Preparation • Heat a deep fryer to 365 degrees. Place florets in the flour and roll around to completely cover the cauliflower. Place the flour dredged florets in the coconut milk and roll around until completely covered. Remove florets from coconut milk and place in flour again. Very gently roll the florets around until completely covered in flour. The florets should look a little gloppy. Place the florets immediately into the deep fryer and fry until golden brown. • Season with salt and pepper and serve while hot with chowchow and any other desired accompaniments.

was born and raised in the sunshine city, also known as Harare in Zimbabwe. Built on attractive landscapes and lush mountains all surrounded by ever so joyous and kind folk, the people whom have suffered hardship through political and economic ruins continued to have faith and hope to one day rise from the battlefield. Growing up in a community with the utmost potential for growth and opportunity, it was tough to calculate what the journey to success would look like. Long nights turned into early mornings as I dawn upon the choices I had to make on where I wanted to be and where I wanted to further my education. It was then that I decided on the United States, the land of opportunity, would help me get to where I want to be. The opportunity to study in the United States was a dream come true when I made the decision to accept the offer at Mayville State University. The only problem was that I had to live in North

Dakota! People kept saying it was cold, but I didn’t pay much attention to that. Alas, after a 38-hour journey and 8,873 miles later, I finally made it to Fargo, ND. It was January 7, 2012 and it was a cold and windy night. I recall the temperature being in the mid 30s and I thought to myself, “Ahh this isn’t too bad, it can only get better, right?” Fast forward three years and now, it only got worse as the winters slowly drained the life out of me. This only made schooling so much harder. However, the people of this area had some sort of magic, which was really intoxicating, but in a good way. They emitted this warm feeling that made me find my home away from home. After graduating with my bachelor’s degree, I had to find the bigger and the better. I kept telling myself I had to move to either of the coasts to be successful. It was only after visiting with mentors that I made the decision to give Fargo a chance. Turns out Fargo recruited me for my first job, but the ultimate challenge would be living in a new city, alone! When life gives you lemons, one would naturally make lemonade, but in this case, I would probably be attempting to make lemonade in a new area for quite a while because I thought there was a sugar shortage in Fargo. Boy, was I wrong! Living here in Fargo has given me

the opportunity to discover true independence with new and exciting challenges that brought out a strength I never knew I had. This move got me to be comfortable with myself. If I’m not comfortable hanging with myself, how could I expect anyone else to? There was no room to be picky about meeting people and making new friends. Rule of thumb, people always lead you to other people and from the connections I made through work, I was exposed to a network of people who have only shown kindness and love in a manner I do not think I would have received living elsewhere. Now being a recruiter for the Fargo area on the professional side, it gives me much joy in hiring talent to our humble abode. We appreciate the culture, the flat landscapes and evening sunsets that help us Fargoans rediscover the distinction between expectation and hope and that there is truly more than meets the eye. For those who are still not convinced, I can only share how we can make you feel safe, loved and genuinely make the impossible, possible. There is always an opportunity to do something great at every corner in Fargo. Just give it a shot! Where would we be if we didn't take the risks for a lifetime of adventure. I can safely say, it most certainly worked out for me!

BeerFish FIRST OF A KIND Local restaurateurs begin laying plans to open a fish and chips restaurant in the reinvigorated Roberts Alley.

f it's one thing the Meyers family knows, it's how to stand apart from the competition. That can be seen in both of their current ventures, Dempsey's Public House and Würst Bier Hall in Downtown Fargo. However, they will now turn their attention to something even more adventurous than their two present establishments. The Meyers will embark on a mission to open up Downtown Fargo's first fish and chips restaurant, BeerFish. Current plans have it going in the newly enlivened Roberts Alley. Husband and wife team Bert and Lisa Meyers along with brother Klaus are looking to fill the gaps in the Fargo dining scene with BeerFish. While it will feature fine dining quality food, the Meyers plan to have the restaurant be more of a casual environment. The fried fish that will certainly be the staple menu item comes from an old family recipe. “Our beer-battered and fried fish is the legendary recipe of our mother, Rosa Bischoff, who for years served up the best fried fish the Iron

Range of Minnesota had ever seen at her own family restaurant,” says Bert Meyers. Along with that, patrons will choose their own type of tartar sauce to dip the fish. Finally, happy diners can select either fish or classic chips as a side accompanied by a French Onion Dip. Classic fish and chips are not the only items on the menu though. The Meyers plan to have oysters, lobster mac and cheese, clam chowder and seafood appetizers. Not only that, but BeerFish will have vegetarian and vegan options and they will have one fryer solely dedicated to gluten-free foods. Polish all of this delicious food off with a cool beverage too. BeerFish will feature a wide tap list, wine selections and Fargo's first Tiki drink menu. To this point, BeerFish is a restaurant of firsts. The first fish and chips restaurant Downtown, the first Tiki drink menu. However, the innovation does not end. Beerfish will be located across Roberts Alley from Dempsey's (also owned by the Meyers). It will only be accessible by the

alleyway and will not feature an entryway on Roberts Street. "We are only going to be in the alley," Bert Meyers said. "I think we will be the first restaurant to solely be in the alley." With an open-air dining room planned, the restaurant will also have a patio for the warm weather seasons. Diners will be able to sit and enjoy their chosen fish, chips and beer in Roberts Alley. There will not be a dining experience like it in Fargo and that is what the Meyers want. The family has proven wildly successful in the Fargo restaurant business by creating new and fresh ideas. In this process, they have also successfully woven Fargo's culture and history into their specific restaurants. Whether they know this or not, the Meyers have added to that rich culture and history Fargo is known for. With this new trailblazing venture, they will continue to create a friendly and fun atmosphere in Downtown Fargo. They will continue to own and operate Dempsey's and Würst along with BeerFish too.

“We want to create a place for people who want to have great conversation with their favorite food and drink,” says Meyers. “It’s all the things we love.” The Meyers plan to have BeerFish open in the Fall of 2019. While Bert and Lisa do not have a specific month nailed down yet, they are hoping for a September opening. Kilbourne Group, developer of the mixed-use project that will be home to BeerFish, is excited to be working with the local group to bring another restaurant into Roberts Alley. Since the opening of the alley-facing businesses in the Roberts Commons project, Roberts Alley has been consistently full of people of all ages. It is this current Roberts Alley rejuvenation that has continued to build a vibrant culture in Downtown Fargo. With new businesses and restaurants coming into the Alley, it has made for a fresh new slice of Fargo for people to enjoy. As BeerFish looks towards its opening, it will only continue to make Fargo a one of a kind place. Much like BeerFish is a one of a kind restaurant in our community.

Behind every politician is a life that often gets overshadowed by their career and constant news coverage. So, we are starting a series to learn more about the lives of politicians outside of the Capitol. We sat down with North Dakota Senator Heidi Heitkamp at Fargo Brewing Company for the first installment. So, tell us a little bit about yourself outside of politics. I know you grew up with six siblings, what was that like? You know what's amazing about my family isn't so much that we had all these siblings, but we have so many extended family members. The girl who lived down the street spent most of her time at our house, our house was literally Grand Central Station for all the kids of Mantador. So we were never without a full contingent of almost a baseball team. Speaking of your hometown, I read that they use the VFW as the bar and the post office. What was the population of Mantador when you were growing up? When I was growing up, it was a town of about 90 people. So I tell everybody when I was growing up that my mother had four kids when I was born, there were no 51

twins and the oldest was two. My brother (Dennis) was two going to be three, my sister (Thomasine) was two, Julie was already one and I was an infant. You know, you think about that and looking at a child who is just going to turn three and then think of having three other kids that small. The fact the my mother persevered and made it is really pretty remarkable. So I tell people my family was a tenth of the population of Mantador, North Dakota. In your mind, what are the benefits and drawbacks of living and growing up in a small town? I really never felt any drawbacks. In part because growing up in both Mantador and Hankinson put such an emphasis on quality education. We had great teachers so when you showed up in college, you didn't feel any disadvantage or that feeling of being unprepared for college curriculum. You grow up with that comfort of knowing someone for 12 years. I have friends I went to school with that have been my friends and will be for the rest of my life. But we also have extended family, people who were important to us and the community growing up and you really have a chance to reflect the values of a small town. Whether it be the patriotism or the faith-based aspect, each one of these institutions played a big role in growing up.

What motivates you? Whether that be professionally or otherwise, what keeps you getting out of bed every morning? I think the first thing that I do and one of the dynamics I have brought to the Senate, especially being in a minority caucus, is the dynamic of rural America. I get up every morning wondering how I am going to make rural America stronger, more vibrant and more viable into the future. Because not a lot of people are thinking about them and that means quality rural hospitals, quality rural schools, a farm program that works for our farmers, reducing poverty in rural communities. A lot of what I focus on and a lot of what I bring to this is that rural perspective, which is consistent with how I grew up. You are the first elected woman Senator in North Dakota. What does that feel like?

Everyone has their favorite home-cooked meal. Growing up and after you left home, what was the meal you missed the most?

It's always interesting because I have been around so long. This is my seventh statewide race, think about that. I ran in '84 for State Auditor, in '88 for Tax Commissioner, in '92 for Attorney General, in '96 for Attorney General, in 2000 for Governor and then this will be my second race for the Senate. So I don't think about myself in that context. I don't think about, "Oh, I'm a woman Senator from North Dakota."

Fried chicken, mashed potatoes, her chicken gravy and blanched green beans or corn, the best. All homemade, she probably even butchered the chicken that morning. No one could fry chicken like my mom, all those Southern women who think they know how to do it, no way.

In fact, I tell this story about winning a race when no one thought you would win, you're busy getting your office ready and busy getting ready to take over this responsibility and when I presided over the Senate for the first time, I turned to say the Pledge of Allegiance and I got

really emotional. Because now all of the sudden I realized that the daughter of a school cook and a seasonal construction worker from a town of 90 people can be standing in the United States Senate, leading them in the Pledge of Allegiance. So when I think about what's remarkable, I don't think about how I am the first woman, I think about where I came from, my family struggling financially. The opportunities we have been given to get an education, which is the great equalizer for families like ours. People always want to say I did it on my own, no one ever does it on their own, I did it with community. For me, the thing that's remarkable is where I came from to then serve in the United States Senate. That is not only a great story about North Dakota, but it is a great story about America. Now, you are always bouncing around from D.C. to Bismarck to Fargo to all-around North Dakota. When you come through FargoMoorhead where is your favorite place to eat? Okay, I have to confess it's a little unfair because it is the same answer in Grand Forks as it is in Fargo. It's Red Pepper. It makes me feel young again, it takes me back to college, I think the food is terrific and it's unique. It's not production line and it's still a small, family-run business. For me, it's a tradition, it's part of the comfort you have of not just good food, but of remembering a place. I get the same thing every single time, a double ham, double cheese half grinder, taco meat, NOT HEATED and a hard shell taco. I'm really boring because it's never been anything different.

senator heidi heitkamp will be vying for a second united states senate term in november. What is you favorite thing about Fargo? What do you love the most about this area? How dynamic it is. Prairie Den? What a great concept. Fargo Brewing? There are just so many more choices in Fargo and it has become younger and I like that about Fargo. The university has become very dynamic with lots of very interesting research going on, world-class research, so I like that there are things happening in Fargo that the rest of the country doesn't realize and they are very exciting. And people say, "Oh, you're from North Dakota, what about Fargo?" and they harken back to the movie or the TV show and I always remind them that the movie Fargo is not about Fargo, North Dakota. It's about Brainerd, Minnesota. I think that Fargo was always the big place we came to growing up, it was always a treat. I remember the first K-Mart, the

first McDonalds, that's how old I am. And Fargo today has a level dynamic energy that is really exciting. But North Dakota has a lot of that too, you see that in Bismarck. But Fargo being the largest city, it has attracted people from all over the country. It's really easy to pitch Fargo because when you bring people here, they go "wow" so if we can get people here, they are amazed. What is one thing that we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know about you that would surprise us? I would say that I am a licensed SCUBA diver. I got it probably around 2010, but I decided that when I turned 50, I wanted to do something every year that challenged myself, that took me out of my comfort zone. I've slowed down a little bit on those things because of how busy I am, but I really do miss SCUBA diving. The first place I ever SCUBA dived was in Belize.

What has been the most rewarding thing about being a United States Senator to this point? We've done some big things. We have opened up oil exports, we have passed a farm bill. These are really big public policy things that effect North Dakota and our region. But my proudest moment was a story when I was able to present a Purple Heart to a Korean War veteran who was injured in Korea and served in a POW camp. He waited over 60 years for the medal, and we were able to get him that medal. We were able to do it because of the hard work of our staff and the commitment we have to veterans. If you said the moment where I felt the proudest of being a United States Senator, it was when I was able to get him his Purple Heart.

Q&A NOW THAT IT'S SUMMER AND PATIO SEASON, ARE THE MARGARITAS FLYING OUT OF THE BAR HERE AT VINYL TACO? Oh, absolutely. Especially the jumbo margs, you got your groups of friends coming out and they want to share one (or have one for themselves). I would say our classic lime would be the most popular, it's like a normal margarita that people seem to like the most. However, I think the strawberry is really good too.

SO, HOW DOES ONE MAKE AN AVOCADO MARGARITA?

Well, it's actually a lot like our Cadillac margarita that we already have on the menu. The only difference with this one is that it does not have Triple Sec in it. Rather than putting that in there, we put in avocado salsa. It still has lime juice, the tequila and some syrup, but the avocado replaces the Triple Sec.

WHAT KIND OF FLAVOR DOES THE AVOCADO BRING TO A MARGARITA? WHEN YOU'RE DRINKING IT, WHAT DOES IT REMIND YOU OF? AND DO YOU THINK PEOPLE ARE TURNED OFF WHEN THEY HEAR AVOCADO IN A MARGARITA?

It's just like guacamole, I think. I don't think people get turned off by it, I actually think people will love to come in and have this drink. It's one of those things where if you try it once, you may never look back because it's that good. If you like guacamole, salsa and really good Mexican food this is going to be perfect for you.

WHICH TACO ON THE MENU WOULD YOU PAIR WITH THIS DRINK?

I would have to say the fish taco because you already have the avocado salsa on it. Maybe the cilantro lime chicken taco too. The drink kind of cools down the jalapeÃ±o ranch that's on that one.

We talked with some of the key figures in Trollwood's 40th Mainstage Musical, Hello, Dolly! We also got a behind-the-scenes look into the preparation.

“Michael (Walling) came to me and said he wanted something summery. When I heard that I thought of those bright green, purple and blue colors. Plus, all of the promotional material has that teal color to it, so I wanted to make it bright. We also wanted to definitely incorporate some red into Dolly’s costume, because it’s very Dolly, the character. If you see other productions of the musical, you’ll see that they choose to make the costumes more modern. The original script actually has the story taking place in 1890 or so and we wanted to adhere to that. Our inspiration was kind of the painted ladies, those old Victorian-style houses. We just wanted to make these costumes different from other productions of this show.”

Executive Director Kathy Anderson on why students come to Trollwood... "I think a lot of these kids come to Trollwood because they have a passion for theater. I don't think it matters what kind of musical we are putting on each year, kids just want to perform. They come from their high school theater productions where they audition and rehearse. This is a far more intense process compared to high school productions. I mean, they are setting a lot of things aside to just perform in the summer. Compared to high school, where you are not constantly working on a production, this is very different. And when we go out and see these kids in their high school production the next year, we can see their growth."
