Jacksonville stocks underperform in 2020

Most companies are down as major indexes reach record highs.

In a year when major market indexes finished at record highs, Jacksonville stocks generally underperformed in 2020.

Out of 13 Jacksonville-based companies that were trading above $1 when the year began, only five finished with gains for the year.

At the top of the list was Rayonier Advanced Materials Inc., a stock that has been beaten down by a poor financial performance in recent years.

When the maker of cellulose specialties products reported its first profit in seven quarters in November, the stock jumped higher.

It more than doubled in price to a high of $8.63 in early December and closed at $6.52 on Dec. 31, up 75% for the year.

Rayonier AM remains a long way from its high of $44.18 in July 2014, shortly after it split with Rayonier Inc. into separate public companies.

Among more consistent performers, mortgage technology company Black Knight Inc. led the way with a 37% gain.

That shouldn’t be surprising because 2020 was a big year for technology companies during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Nasdaq Composite Index, which features a large number of high-tech companies, soared by 43.6% last year.

However, Jacksonville’s other big financial technology company, Fidelity National Information Services Inc., rose only 2%.

Fidelity National Information Services, or FIS, already was lagging other technology stocks.

But FIS fell back a bit in late December after The Wall Street Journal reported the company called off negotiations for a potential $70 billion merger with Global Payments Inc.

Avocado oversupply hits Calavo Growers

Although news of that possible deal was kept under wraps until the Journal’s Dec. 20 report, the stock fell on investors’ disappointment when they learned a blockbuster deal didn’t happen.

The two other stocks that registered gains for 2020 were Jacksonville’s two major public freight transportation companies, CSX Corp. and Landstar System Inc. Railroad company CSX rose 25% and trucking company Landstar rose 18%.

Although those stocks were well behind the Nasdaq index, they did beat the 16.3% gain in the S&P 500 and the 7.3% rise in the Dow Jones industrial average for 2020.

ARC Group sees year’s biggest loss

At the other end of the spectrum, the biggest losses came from ARC Group Inc., which dropped 75% from its $1.14 price at the beginning of the year to 29 cents.

ARC Group, operator of the Dick’s Wings & Grill restaurant chain, did not file any financial reports in 2020.

The company in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing said disruptions caused by the pandemic prevented it from preparing financial statements.

Among higher priced stocks, Patriot Transportation Holdings Inc. registered the biggest drop, falling 55% to $8.78.

The trucking company

transports mainly petroleum products and a lower demand for gasoline in the pandemic caused earnings to drop in 2020.

GEE Group revenue tumbles by 20% GEE Group Inc. last week reported a drop in revenue for the fourth quarter ended Sept.

30, as the Jacksonville-based staffing company continued to feel the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fourth-quarter revenue fell 20% to $31 million and the company had a net loss of $12.6 million, which included an $8.9 million noncash charge related to goodwill on its balance sheet.

GEE Group said the pandemic has caused decreases in demand for staffing in its finance, accounting and office support units. Its light industrial segment also was impacted.

Demand for information technology workers was stronger, as those jobs are more suited for the remote working environment used by many companies during the pandemic, it said.

In a news release, CEO Derek Dewan said trends are improving.

“GEE Group experienced a gradual yet steady increase in temporary workers placed on assignment as well as direct hire placements beginning in the third quarter,” Dewan said.

Demand for avocados remained strong in 2020, said Calavo Growers Inc. But while the Californiabased company increased sales of avocados, an oversupply led to price drops, which caused revenue to fall.

Calavo reported revenue fell 20% in its fourth quarter ended Oct. 31 to $234.4 million.

While avocado sales volume rose 3%, prices dropped 22%.

Avocados accounted for slightly more than half of fiscal 2020 sales for Californiabased Calavo, which has a processing and distribution facility in Green Cove Springs.

“With strong crops out of both Mexico and California, supply in the fourth quarter was plentiful,” CEO James Gibson said in a Dec. 21 news release.

“Many foodservice outlets remained unavailable to absorb the crop size and quality dispersion, which has historically helped to maintain margins.

As a result, revenue and gross margin declined year-overyear,” he said.

Calavo’s adjusted earnings fell by 11 cents a share in the fourth quarter to 34 cents.

Gibson said the trend is expected to continue into early 2021.

“The Mexican crop is expected to be larger than it was in 2020, which will continue to pressure selling prices.

We expect foodservice outlets will remain unavailable to take sizes and quality of avocados that are not desired by our retail customers until the latter half of 2021,” he said.

Calavo leased a 208,000-square-foot distribution center in Green Cove Springs in 2015 that formerly was used by the Food Lion supermarket chain, with a promise to employ 262 people.

The facility primarily dis-

tributes fresh avocados and prepared guacamole, the company said in its annual report.

It also processes fresh-cut fruits and vegetables and prepared foods.

Anheuser-Busch selling plant stake Anheuser-Busch InBev agreed to sell a 49.9% stake in its metal container plants for $3 billion.

The global brewer’s Metal Container Corp. subsidiary has been producing cans at a Westside plant for beers produced at Anheuser-Busch’s Jacksonville brewery since 1975.

The company completed a $170 million expansion of the plant at 1100 Ellis Road in 2017 to begin producing Budweiser and Bud Light aluminum bottles.

AB InBev will retain operational control of its plants after it completes the sale of a minority stake to a group of investors led by Apollo Global Management Inc. The company’s Dec. 23 news release did not say how many container plants it currently has.

AB InBev said the sale will generate proceeds to repay debt.

The agreement gives AB InBev the option to reacquire the minority stake beginning on the fifth anniversary of the closing of the transaction. The closing is scheduled for Jan. 8.

TV-12 agreement with NBC extended Tegna Inc. said Jan. 4 it reached a deal with NBC to extend its network affiliation agreements in 20 markets, including Jacksonville.

Tegna operates NBC affiliate WTLV TV-12 in Jacksonville.

The company said in last year’s annual report that its affiliation agreement with NBC was scheduled to expire in early 2021.

The company also operates Jacksonville ABC affiliate WJXX TV-25. The annual report said it reached an agreement in 2019 to extend its agreements with ABC through 2023.

Virginia-based Tegna operates 64 television stations in 51 U.S. markets.

Jay Stowe Managing Director and CEO, JEA Jay Stowe, the new CEO of Jacksonville’s municipal water and electric utility since Nov. 30, inherited an organization cooperating in a federal grand jury probe and preparing a five-year, $2.5 billion capital investment plan.

His hiring ended a 1½-year period that saw an attempt to sell JEA to a private company, resulting in U.S. Department of Justice and City Council investigations and the firing of former CEO Aaron Zahn and his senior leadership team.

Stowe plans to repair trust within JEA while moving on plans to invest $1.6 million to modernize its its water and wastewater system.

He wants to stabilize JEA’s use of the Floridan aquifer and diversify the utility’s water sources. On the electric side, he plans to use JEA’s purchase power agreement with the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia in nuclear Plant Vogtle and its 250 megawatts of solar generation expected online by 2022 to mitigate fuel costs and reach carbon dioxide emission reduction goals.

When 11-year Museum of Science & History President Maria Hane stepped down in August, Bruce Fafard took the reigns of the museum as it planned for its $80 million to $90 million expansion and renovation.

Fafard was serving as COO of MOSH when he was appointed interim CEO in August. He was made the permanent CEO Oct. 15.

Fafard will plan the museum’s move to the Shipyards from the Downtown Southbank and oversee the MOSH Genesis campaign, which will fund the new facility.

He is involved in discussions with the Downtown Investment Authority and the city to secure a 4-acre site for the museum. He could oversee the start of preconstruction in 2021 as the project works toward completion in 2024.

Anthony Hucker is in a position to make Southeastern Grocers Inc. what could be Jacksonville’s fourth-largest public company based on revenue.

As the president and CEO of Winn-Dixie’s parent company, Hucker leads the private Southeastern Grocers as it pursues an initial public offering to sell shares – again becoming one of the country’s largest supermarket chains and earning a ranking in the Fortune 500.

Southeastern Grocers went private nine years ago and through Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2018.

After the IPO, It will operate more than 420 grocery stores under the Winn-Dixie, Harveys and Fresco y Mas banners in five states, which it said makes it the sixth-largest conventional supermarket operator in the U.S. The 420 stores produced $6.7 billion in revenue in 2019.

Through 2020, it invested in 41 new and renewed grocery stores, including several former Earth Fare and Lucky’s Markets.

Thea Jeffers Owner, Breezy Jazz Club Breezy Jazz Club owner Thea Jeffers will sound a note as the new jazz club on the Downtown Southbank.

She relocated her 3-year-old live music venue in December from a 2,892-square-foot site on West Adams Street Downtown to a 4,450-square-foot space at 1402 San Marco Blvd., boosting seating from 100 to 155.

Jeffers said in October she doesn’t see the move as leaving Downtown, but as growth.

“We are hoping that it is so attractive that local jazz artists and jazz students will consider that their home,” she said.

“I am really trying to be part of the Downtown community.”

The Southern Illinois University at Carbondale graduate is a dual-entrepreneur and plans to continue operating her first company, T-works Interior Decorating.

Jeffers has owned the company since February 2005 that designs interior and exterior remodeling projects for commercial and residential properties.

Alex Sifakis President, JWB Real Estate Capital It seems as if Alex Sifakis is involved in most Downtown development projects.

He is working on completing the Ashley Street Container Lofts while redeveloping several North Core buildings, including the Porter Mansion and the Federal Reserve, Baptist Convention and the Seminole buildings.

Plans include apartments and restaurant, business, banquet and office space.

Across the river in Arlington, he is spearheading the redevelopment of the Town & Country Shopping Center, now rebranded College Park. It is expected to include a grocery store, apartments, public open space and a shipping container food court.

He also hints at more projects.

She and her husband, Jim Wiss, bought nearly a full city block of the First Baptist Church Downtown campus before the pandemic and said they could invest $25 million for adaptive reuse of the site. They see Downtown Jacksonville “at the edge of a resurgence” and intend to buy more property.

In community service, she co-founded Read USA Inc., which encourages lifelong learning to end the cycle of poverty, and is a lifetime legacy member of the Women’s Giving Alliance. She also has served on the boards of the World Affairs Council, City Year, Teach for America, Hubbard House Foundation, JAX Chamber and more. Her focus is to work with nonprofits to improve literacy, education, health and economic opportunities for low-income youth and families, women and girls.

Corner Lot Development Group CEO Andy Allen grew the company in 2020, including creating the Corner Lot Living brand that focuses on multifamily development and buying a Riverside historic building to house those employees.

That growth is expected to continue in 2021 as he plans to add three new employees to Corner Lot Living in 2021. The branch will have five multifamily projects underway as the new year begins.

Corner Lot’s Park Place apartments project in San Marco, on part of South Jacksonville Presbyterian Church’s property, is expected to break ground in 2021. It will add 133 units adjacent to San Marco Square.

Allen’s plans with Kelco Management and Development Inc. to construct a Home2 Suites by Hilton in Brooklyn likely also will move ahead in the coming year. It will bring another lodging option in the rapidly growing Brooklyn neighborhood, between Downtown and Riverside.

Mark Lamping Jacksonville Jaguars President Mark Lamping, who is team owner Shad Khan’s lead negotiator, will spend the early part of 2021 securing City Council support for a $245.3 million public incentives package for the franchise and development partner The Cordish Companies’ proposed $450 million Lot J project.

Lamping and the Jaguars are pitching the entertainment, retail and residential venue as a catalyst for development in the Downtown Sports and Entertainment District.

If Council approves the Lot J incentives, Lamping plans to begin negotiations with the Downtown Investment Authority on Khan’s proposed Four Seasons hotel and a medical and residential development at Metropolitan Park and the cityowned Shipyards property.

He also started a three-year assessment of TIAA Bank Field’s infrastructure needs with the city and the Haskell construction and engineering firm.

In his eight years with the Jaguars, the former 14-season president of Major League Baseball’s St. Louis Cardinals has become Khan’s spokesperson.

Carlton Robinson Chief Innovation Officer, JAX Chamber Carlton Robinson, the founder of JAX Chamber’s JAX Bridges program and its former vice president of entrepreneurial growth, took on a new role at year-end as the chamber’s chief innovation officer.

Robinson will help oversee the chamber’s new Venture Services division and innovation efforts.

River City Brewing Co. Miami-based The Related Group waits for City Council to authorize its $92.34 million proposal to acquire and redevelop the Downtown Southbank River City Brewing Co. site into a 335-unit apartment building.

The Downtown Investment Authority board voted 8-0 in November to approve a 20-year, 75% Recapture Enhanced Value Grant capped at $11.9 million for what became a proposed mixed-used project after pressure from the public and officials to add a restaurant to the plans.

Related Group, a developer, has a contract to buy out River City owner Maritime Concepts’ interest in the property and remaining 77-year land lease with the city.

The developer intends to close on the riverfront property by July 31 and complete the eight-story apartment building, 5,000-square-foot outdoor restaurant, public marina and 500-space parking garage by April 2025.

The COVID-19 pandemic slowed but did not stall retail, hotel and residential development and public infrastructure projects on Jacksonville’s Downtown Northbank.

Downtown Investment Authority CEO Lori Boyer expects work to begin this year adapting several roadways into two-way streets. Staff also plans to ask its board to issue a request for proposals seeking designs for a public riverfront park at the former Jacksonville Landing.

An expansion to the DIA’s financial incentives for historic building renovations could close financial gaps in historic projects.

There’s more uncertainty involved in larger and more expensive Northbank projects, including Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan’s $450 million Lot J project and his desire to include a Four Seasons hotel in a $472.8 million development at Metropolitan Park.

Another Northbank riverfront site, The Ford on Bay, is in limbo.

The District, an estimated $600 million long-discussed Southbank mixed-use development, has the money to start site infrastructure work early this year.

Dallas-based finance company Preston Hollow Capital LLC took control of The District landowner group Elements Development of Jacksonville LLC in October. It expects to announce vertical construction early this year.

Preston Hollow closed on $35.6 million in bonds Dec. 22 for private investment in an estimated $58.35 million in site infrastructure. The remaining $23 million will be covered by a Downtown Investment Authority grant approved as part of an economic development agreement with Elements.

Preston Hollow is committed to 950 residential units; 200 hotel rooms; 200,000 square feet of office space; 121,600 square feet of retail; and a 125-slip marina.

Regency Square Mall enters 2021 with a “bad news, good news” story.

The bad news is the loss of the mall’s last anchor tenant. J.C. Penney Co. closed its store in October, part of the national retailer’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy, after more than 50 years in business at the shopping center.

That leaves only small independent retailers and a few national brands remaining open in the 1.4 millionsquare-foot center.

The good news is that Impact Church completed its $5 million renovation of the former Belk department store. Church members cut the ribbon Dec. 19 and had the first services in the new sanctuary Dec. 20.

The other major driver of foot traffic likely will remain in 2021, the COVID-19 public testing site in the former Sears space at the west end of the mall.

In other news of change: Jacksonville developer Rimrock Devlin has a contract and is in due diligence to buy and redevelop the property.

Fidelity National Information Services Inc. As Jacksonville’s largest construction project started in 2020, the $156 million headquarters for Fidelity National Information Services Inc., will reshape the St. Johns riverfront in the Brooklyn area of Downtown as it develops in 2021.

The 12-story, almost 380,000-square-foot headquarters tower and eight-story, almost 1,650-space parking garage at 347 Riverside Ave. are expected to be completed in June 2022. Gilbane Building Co. is the contractor. Hines is the developer.

The project will create an even bigger presence for FIS and related companies along Riverside Avenue. It adds to the office, apartment and retail redevelopment of the Brooklyn and Riverside neighborhoods.

Will 2021 be the year?

Workers are preparing the East San Marco site for construction in the new year.

The long-awaited project, which is expected to include a 39,000-square-foot Publix grocery store along with restaurant and retail space, looks like it may finally be underway this year with completion expected by summer 2022.

The project has been in the works since 2002. In May, plans were filed with the city and the St. Johns River Water Management District, alerting that the project was back on track.

While it saw some COVID-related delays, work began again at the site in 2020.

Since Seattle-based Amazon.com Inc. opened its first Northeast Florida fulfillment center in September 2017, the online retailer has opened, announced or indicated plans for 11 area locations.

Apparently there will be more because at least one company representative said Amazon wants to set up more delivery stations to speed up customer service throughout the area.

Amazon’s 11 sites – open or in development – are in North, Northwest and West Jacksonville, and a delivery station is planned in St. Johns County.

They comprise three fulfillment centers; a sortation center; jka heavy bulk freight delivery center; five delivery stations; and another center with an unidentified function.

The transformation of the former Town & Country Shopping Center into College Park may begin by mid-2021.

JWB Real Estate Capital paid $5.08 million in August 2019 for the 200,000-square-foot center on 19 acres along University Boulevard north of the Arlington Expressway. The developer anticipates investing another $10 million to complete the project.

In addition to a mural already painted on a building along the expressway, plans include updating the existing retail facade, adding two apartment buildings and an outdoor food court and returning a grocery store to the property.

The site is within the Renew Arlington Community Redevelopment Area, established by City Council to promote economic development.

East San Marco

As shopping mall retailers continue to struggle with challenges created by COVID-19, there’s construction underway at St. Johns Town Center in South Jacksonville.

An $18 million, three-story store with a rooftop bar and restaurant is being built at 4831 Village Shops Way for RH, formerly known as Restoration Hardware. It’s near Tesla and Apple.

Ashco Inc. is building-out the former Thomasville furniture store near The Markets at Town Center for conversion into Town Center Medical Plaza.

The plaza is designed to be “medical retail transformed, capturing the current demand for a Class A medical and retail experience,” Ashco said in August when it bought the 13,200-square-foot store at 4853 Big Island Drive for $2.3 million.

Construction of JEA’s new headquarters near the State Attorney’s Office and the Duval County Courthouse is underway with site work and a permit application for a $31.1 million construction project submitted to the city Dec. 7.

The Downtown building will replace the city-owned utility’s current headquarters and customer service center at 21 W. Church St. JEA’s new building is designed at 162,741 square feet among eight floors with an adjacent 657-space parking garage. Completion is anticipated in early 2022.

The utility also intends to build a 40,000-square-foot emergency operations center designed to withstand severe weather and allow JEA to maintain operations during a catastrophic hurricane. It is near LaVilla School of the Arts.

eTown East of Interstate 295 and Florida 9B When Publix Super Markets Inc., Gate Petroleum Co., Baptist Health and a Jacksonville Fire Station are on the way, an area is up-and-coming.

Thousands of homes and apartments, a commercial center, amenities, nature trails and parks are under development at eTown, a 1,500-acre community generally east of Interstate 295 and Florida 9B in southern Duval County.

In March 2019, The PARC Group announced eTown, which is marketed as a smart-living community built around technology connections on land owned by the Davis family.

Neighborhoods are named after inventors.

Publix has not confirmed a store, but plans show a location that fits it. The city is reviewing the fire station.

Apartments for the North Core

Gate Parkway Between Butler Boulevard and Interstate 295

North Core Four developers — JWB Real Estate Capital, Augustine Development Group, ACE JAX LLC and Jim and Ellen Wiss — have announced $116.1 million of investments in the historic area they’ve collectively branded the North Core.

The North Core is bordered by State, Broad, Church and Main streets.

JWB, led by president Alex Sifakis, plans to invest $11.4 million to redevelop the Federal Reserve and Baptist Convention buildings.

The Wisses acquired from First Baptist Church nearly a full city block that they intend to redevelop.

Augustine Development’s plans date back to July 2018. The St. Augustine-based company plans to tie three projects together.

ACE JAX LLC, controlled by Petra Management Inc. Vice President Elias Hionides and Christian Allen of Atlantic Beach, bought the Jones Brothers Furniture Co. Building and the Western Union Building.

North Jacksonville North Jacksonville, a vast area north of the Trout and St. Johns rivers and primarily east of Interstate 95, historically has been an area known for transportation and industry.

It encompasses Jacksonville International Airport, two JaxPort shipping terminals and access to the highway and railroad system that make it attractive for logistics.

In recent years, the availability and cost of land has lured thousands of homes and apartments as well as shopping centers and hotels. More are on the way.

Industry also continues to heat up, with hundreds of acres of business parks under development or proposed, including Amazon.com fulfillment and delivery centers.

Wildlight

Development in St. Johns County, especially the northern part, shows no signs of stopping.

Hospitals, including Ascension St. Vincent’s St. Johns County and Baptist Health, are popping up along Interstate 95 at County Road 210 and Florida 207. Mixed-use developments are underway, such as the Fountains at St. Johns and Durbin Park.

A 2,782-acre master-planned community, Parrish Farms, led by MasterCraft Builder Group owner Chris Shee, likely will move forward with rezoning and permitting.

Residential developments, such as Beachwalk and SilverLeaf, are filling in. Apartments and single-family homes are being built to keep up with an influx of residents.

Planned community in Nassau County

Nocatee While housing has been expanding in the masterplanned Nocatee community in St. Johns and Duval counties, the area is seeing more varied types of development, some of which will come online in 2021.

In 2020, Publix’s GreenWise Market, First Watch, and Baptist HealthPlace and YMCA opened in Nocatee.

Several others, like The Link innovation incubator, CVS Pharmacy, Fleet Landing and RangeWater Real Estate, announced their intent to build in the community.

Newsweek magazine named it Florida’s best place to live in 2020 and RCLCO Real Estate Advisors ranked it No. 8 among its Top 50 Master Planned Communities of 2020.

San Pablo Parkway Mayo Clinic is the dominant fixture along San Pablo Parkway, and it is drawing development in the parcels up and down the 2.5-mile corridor from Atlantic Boulevard south to Pablo Creek Reserve.

The parkway already sports residential and office developments and is entitled for much more, including a planned Gate gas station and convenience store.

While additions to the Mayo Clinic campus, like the $65 million Mayo North building, account for some of the growth in the area, residential and mixed-use development also are on the rise.

A 304-unit multifamily development with space for more development is planned at San Pablo Parkway and San Pablo and Sam Yepez roads.

The Wildlight mixed-use, master-planned community established by Rayonier Inc. in Nassau County 20 miles north of Jacksonville will continue implementing its Phase 1 plan in 2021.

About 700 single-family homes and townhomes and 300 apartments are being built on 291 acres of the 2,900-acre site. It also features parks, trails and 350 acres of preserved wetlands.

Wildlight Village, a 500,000-square-foot commercial development, includes retail, restaurants and offices.

The historic Springfield neighborhood, anchored by Main Street north of State Street, will continue to redevelop in 2021.

Springfield Preservation and Revitalization Executive Director Kelly Rich said the population of the area increased by about 1,000 residents in the past three years and homes continue to sell as fast as they are listed.

“It’s a great time to be a Realtor in Springfield,” Rich said.

Commercial activity also is thriving. Two ice cream shops and a restaurant opened in 2020; in 2021, ReddiArts will open along Main Street; and the Rethreaded nonprofit, now in the Rail Yard District, will renovate a former industrial complex near Springfield.

The nonprofit, which helps survivors of human trafficking, plans to convert three buildings at 515 E. Ninth St. for office, retail, commercial, warehousing, light manufacturing, counseling services and vocational training.

SPAR, the nonprofit neighborhood advocacy organization, also will move into newly built-out offices at 1321 N. Main St. in February, Rich said.

Dennis + Ives, a project designed to include a brewery, coffee shop, restaurant and lounge, social hall and office space is under development at 1505 Dennis St. in the Rail Yard District.

The city issued a permit Dec. 21 for the first step, demolition of a 42,500-square-foot building on the site.

That initial phase comprises converting part of the former Caribbean Cold Storage property on the site into nearly 28,000 square feet of office space. Demolition and removal of the refrigerant and rack systems is scheduled to be completed in early 2021. The space is expected to be ready for tenants by late 2021.

The next step will convert adjacent buildings into restaurant and beverage service spaces.

started my legal career at a major national law firm where I was asked at the end of each year to prepare a business plan for the following year.

As a young associate, that mostly meant how many hours I planned to bill for the next year. I would tuck a copy in the top drawer of my desk and occasionally look at a chart I had made that was taped to the wall on top of my desk in a discrete spot but in plain view for me.

The chart on the wall broke down the number of hours I needed to bill per month to reach my “goal,” accounting for firm holidays and a few days of vacation – no sick days. I felt “accomplished” if I was on track at the end of each month. However, each January meant I was starting at zero and had to climb the billable hour ladder for the next 365 days.

Not so happy new year.

It’s how lawyers volunteer their time to serve community members through an opportunity to “pick the brain” of an attorney and get guidance, and many times reassurance, concerning their legal matters.

The event was the first AskA-Lawyer event sponsored by a voluntary Bar association and we are thankful for the efforts of Gregory Redmon and LaTonya

Smith in organizing the event.

For three hours, Perkins Bar Association members, along with attorney Laura Gapske, provided counsel to several people in the areas of family law, landlord/tenant issues, criminal law and estate planning.

Ask-A-Lawyer events are usually conducted in person at different locations throughout Jacksonville.

Because of Covid-19, recent Ask-A-Lawyer events have

migrated to virtual platforms to allow people to receive assistance while protecting the safety of all involved.

Make 2021 a better year with lessons learned and in your career. If we do not have a road map or things to look forward to, life can seem like we are roaming aimlessly.

The caveat when doing so is to be nimble. Things may not always go according to plan, so be able to “pivot” when necessary. Things happen in life that are beyond our control, but what we can control is how we respond.

Just think: Before 2020, who knew about Zoom or that we could conduct court proceedings and mediations using it?

It’s important to count your blessings and plan for the future.

As we turn the page from 2020 and begin the new year, I suspect people will be quick to come up with a new year’s resolution, develop a strategic plan or create a vision board in anticipation of all the things they hope to accomplish.

However, after experiencing a year like 2020, I think there are a few important lessons to keep in mind as you write your vision or goals for 2021.

Be nimble In 2020, our lives were shaken to the core. We learned how powerless we are in the grand scheme of things.

Even with that realization, it is imperative to be thoughtful in setting goals you wish to accomplish, both personally

That is a blessing in itself.

When we are experiencing challenges in our lives, it is easy and understandable to become consumed with our own issues. But in 2021, I want to challenge you to consider those who do not have the resources or access you may have.

Consider how you can better serve others who may have a greater need.

Think about ways to contribute your time, money or talent for the sake of helping others.

It is amazing how focusing on the needs of others can help you overcome your issues or to help you be in a better position to handle them with ease.

There is such a great need around us and if we slow down long enough, we will clearly see opportunities to make a

I recommend you take the time to reflect on things that you did well in 2020 both personally and in your career.

Then reflect on things that you did not do very well.

For those things you did well, pat yourself on the back. It is important to celebrate your accomplishments. For things that you did not do well, think about what you learned from those experiences. How can you use those experiences to make you stronger, wiser and better?

Realize that as long as you are on planet Earth, there is work for you to do to improve yourself and the lives of those around you. In 2021, commit to being the change you want to see. Commit to leaving things better than you found them. Commit to being the best you can possibly be.

Goodbye 2020, hello new challenges

The JBA is in the forefront to facilitate solutions for the community.

Happy New Year and cheers to 2021. On behalf of everyone in the world, I am thankful that 2020 is in the rearview mirror.

That being said, 2020 was not all bad. My wife and I had our first child, a perfect son named Parker.

Similarly, many of you likely spent more time with your families than you otherwise would, which hopefully reminded you how much you

love those people.

As an industry, ours is lucky, as the legal profession is suited to weather the pandemic and its resulting challenges. Most of our practices allow us to work remotely without too much problem thanks to modern technology.

Sure, we miss seeing each other and having live trials and hearings, but all things considered, it is a blessing to be able to fulfill our work responsibilities, even if it means arguing an hourlong injunction hearing from a small closet while your dogs and kids run around the main part of your home.

We may all be “Zoomfatigued,” but that is a minor inconvenience in the grand scheme of things.

The sad truth of the matter is that many in this world are not as lucky. Many industries have been impacted in a negative way. While we are hoping the vaccines will soon return the world to “normalcy,” they will be too late to curb the permanent impact of COVID-19 on certain segments of society.

As an industry, ours is lucky, as the legal profession is suited to weather the pandemic and its resulting challenges.

Most of our practices allow us to work remotely without too much problem thanks to modern technology. this, the moratorium on residential evictions may be lifted.

The moratorium was a temporary solution as there is no magic wand to fix the problem of high unemployment or reduced employment hours for many people.

The Jacksonville Bar Association is happy to be in the forefront of addressing this issue.

The city of Jacksonville needed a partner to help administer and manage its Eviction and Foreclosure Prevention Program. We stepped to the plate and agreed to take on the challenge.

The board of governors did not agree to this because it would

be easy. To the contrary, it is a complex program. But, as a civic-minded organization, we seek ways to help the community and in this case, the city needs an organized group to distribute more than $6 million to families and small businesses.

As I write this, I did not expect that the world’s crises would stop Jan. 1. If there is anything that history shows us, it is that we should expect the unexpected and the universe will present challenges.

As lawyers, we remain in a unique position to help those in need and to fix problems for others, even if it involves a virtual

meeting from the aforementioned closet.

The renowned legal scholar John W. Davis said: “True, we (lawyers) build no bridges. We raise no towers. We construct no engines. We paint no pictures – unless as amateurs for our own principal amusement. There is little of all that we do which the eye of man can see. But we smooth out difficulties; we relieve stress; we correct mistakes; we take up other men’s burdens and by our efforts we make possible the peaceful life of men in a peaceful state.”

The equally renowned scholar Robert Van Winkle said, “If there is a problem, yo, I’ll solve it.” Yes, Vanilla Ice was referring to lawyers’ abilities to solve problems.

I sincerely hope 2021 is a bit easier on the world than 2020.

But either way, this year will present challenges. As ever, we stand ready to help solve those problems.

Happy New Year from the Young Lawyers Section We all can look back on 2020 and see how much we endured.

This past year was full of roadblocks, mishaps, pivots and change.

The New York Times quoted Dean Baquet, the executive editor, as saying, “Certain years are so eventful they are regarded as pivotal in history, years when wars and slavery ended and deep generational fissures burst into the open.”

The year 2020 will certainly join the list.

Personally and professionally, it has been tough. As if billing requirements and personal commitments are not enough for a

young attorney, throw a global pandemic into the mix and the stress begins to reach a boiling point.

Like many, when the shutdowns began, we began to worry about job safety. Will business slow down? Will our firms begin layoffs? The extra anxiety started to take a toll on everyone’s mental and emotional health.

It has been such a blessing that our practice areas were not negatively affected by COVID-19.

While we weren’t concerned about job security, the pandemic began to affect mental health in a

different way. While attorneys at our firms were able to work from home, the struggle to balance work and life increased exponentially.

With the new “office” just a few steps from anywhere in the house, there was a constant perceived need to be plugged in to work.

Often, at 6 a.m., the thought was: “Let me just get through my inbox before I work out and make breakfast, then I will be able to dive right in once I really start working for the day.” Similarly, if a client emailed at 10 p.m. asking for something quick, there could be guilt about letting the request sit until the next day.

Then there’s the lack of regular social interaction. The concepts of “work” and “home” were more blurred than ever.

Many of the added pressures and anxieties are self-constructed and self-inflicted, but that

rings true for many young attorneys trying to make their mark in the profession.

Fortunately, our firms were more than supportive through the wild year. We learned how important it is to regularly check in on our mental health and well-being, especially when we were feeling so isolated.

Mental health check-ins will look a little different for everyone, but hopefully, you all have taken a minute to evaluate where you stand and have given yourself a little grace.

Although 2020 was tough, much good has come out of this year. Many employers realized that associates can be productive while working from home, and that helped with schedule flexibility.

We hope 2020 brought blessings, big or small. If nothing else, we all can look back and see how

Many of the attorneys are longtime Ask-A-Lawyer volunteers and each helped to make the new virtual format a success.

All of the volunteers served each person who came seeking information with respect and compassion. They answered questions, provided information on legal options and community resources, and in many cases

offered hope and direction.

Facing a problem requires courage and energy. Taking a first step toward solving a problem requires even more.

For many of the attendees, Ask-A-Lawyer provided the counsel needed to enable the attendees to take that first step toward stability and resolution.

The Ask-A-Lawyer program was established in 2009 by the Jacksonville City Council, The Jacksonville Bar Association, and Jacksonville Area Legal Aid. Each event aims to provide legal guidance and direction, as well as information on commu-

nity resources for people in need.

Attendees may be referred on to JALA, The JBA Lawyer Referral Service, Three Rivers Legal Services and/or to a community service agency.

The events are made possible because of the collaboration of the JBA, Florida Coastal School of Law and JALA. The goal of Ask-A-Lawyer is to take free information and guidance directly to the community and people who may not otherwise be able to access the expertise of an attorney.

We know that, as attorneys, we don’t always tell people what

they want to hear. However, we know that with sound information and direction, people are better equipped to get the help they need and/or resolve their matters themselves.

Access to the legal community must not be limited to those who can afford to pay for that access. It is informed advocacy on both sides that protects the integrity of our system of justice.

Ask-A-Lawyer events empower and encourage people to resolve their legal issues and the barriers they face. The efforts of the AskA-Lawyer pro bono attorneys are applauded and appreciated.

The Ask-A-Lawyer schedule for 2021 will be finalized soon and the program likely will continue offering virtual events for the next few months.

As soon as it is safe to do so, in-person events will resume in locations that are easily accessible to low-income residents and the under-served and open to the public.

Then, in 2012, I listened to a podcast by my best friend from law school. She left a successful career in big law to help lawyers find joy in their work. She spoke of a concept that seemed so foreign to me yet made sense.

Instead of, or in addition to, a “business plan” which focuses on clients, originations, money and the bottom line, the goal was to really focus on what brought me joy and what I hoped to accomplish on a personal level the following year.

Rather than being typed on a piece of paper stashed in my top drawer where seeing it filled me

with anxiety, the vision board would be placed where it could be seen often and every picture, every word, would have symbolism to me and would help mold my decisions throughout the year.

I decided to give it a try.

This month marks my eighth year as a vision boarder. To say that I am a believer is an understatement.

I am not the only one: Vision boarding is practiced by the likes of 23-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps, award-winning actor Will Smith and even Oprah.

The beauty of vision boarding is that there is no wrong way to do it. The steps of creating a vision board are simple:

Think about your ambitions and dreams, find images or words from old magazines that inspire you to take steps in furtherance of your goals, then display your vision board somewhere you will see it often and be reminded of your goals.

If you are in conflict about whether to do something, look at the vision board and it will help you decide if the decision is consistent with what you already have decided is important to you.

Taking the time to seek out these concrete images of abstract goals and placing them where you will see them every day will keep you on track and mindful of the hard work necessary to make

these goals a reality.

Whether your goals are to get a promotion, square away your finances, start a family, spend more quality time with family, remodel your kitchen or improve your health, creating a vision board can help you visualize and achieve. Creating vision boards is an easy and creative way to establish and visualize your goals for the future.

Somehow, I have managed to sucker my law partners and the rest of the firm to join in on the practice each new year. It gets everyone out of their comfort zone, and it does not cost anything. Yet, I believe it is the best investment of time I make all

year. It is a gift to yourself.

This new year let’s focus less on deadlines, calendars and Excel spreadsheets and try implementing our goals through creativity and self-fulfillment.

While we still can hide our billable schedules under our desks, a colorful reminder of our personal goals that we look at every day might help to balance out the new pressures that can accompany the new year.

May 2021 bring you good health and good cheer.
