Construction is scheduled to begin this month. BY MAX MARBUT ASSOCIATE EDITOR
The Downtown rental housing inventory is set to grow after the city issued a permit on Feb. 27 for Ron Chamblin to build-out apartments at 225 N. Laura St. The three-story, 6,500-square-foot building is the former Gus and Co. shoe and luggage repair shop next door to Chamblin’s Uptown bookstore and cafe. The permit shows Breaking Ground Contracting Co. will renovate the building into four apartments on the second and third floors and a restaurant on the ground floor at a $900,000 job cost. Chamblin said one apartment will have three bedrooms, the other three will have two bedrooms and the apartments facing Laura Street will have balconies.
The former Gus and Co. shoe and luggage repair shop at 225 N. Laura St. next door to Chamblin’s Uptown bookstore and cafe is planned for four apartments and a restaurant space.
Rents will range from $900 to $1,900 per month. He purchased the building in 2012 and has demolished the interior. “We’re replacing the plumbing and the electrical system and installing HVAC and we’ll install a sprinkler system so we don’t have to have fire escapes in each apartment,” Chamblin said. A tenant for the restaurant hasn’t been decided. Chamblin said he’s talking to suburban restaurant operators who may be interested in opening Downtown. Construction is scheduled to begin in a few weeks and the project will be ready for occupancy in about 12 months, Chamblin said. MMARBUT@JAXDAILYRECORD.COM (904) 356-2466
Jacksonville chefs Matthew and David Medure are taking their culinary skills to Mayo Clinic. Medure Brothers Culinary Concepts will open a 200-seat, 7,000-square-foot upscalecasual restaurant and bar at the medical center’s Southside campus. Mayo Clinic announced Feb. 27 the restaurant will include a full-service bar and a coffee shop grab-and-go area that will replace the cafe in the Cannaday Building. Mayo said it and the Medures have not decided on a name or type of cuisine. “As the demand grows for healthier cuisines, being able to work on recipes and flavors with Mayo Clinic certainly has its advantages,” Matthew Medure said in a news release. The restaurant will be part of the connector building between a new 860-space parking garage and a five-floor, 120,000-square-foot hospital addition. Mayo said construction will start this summer and the res-

ABA finds Florida Coastal in financial compliance Florida Coastal School of Law President and Dean Peter Goplerud notified students, faculty and staff Feb. 28 that the American Bar Association found the school in compliance with standards that ensure law schools are financially sound, a requirement for accreditation. Goplerud said the school is now able to again focus on recruiting students. “We feel we’re doing great work in the classroom. To not have that cloud over us is very helpful,” he said. The decision ends an investigation by the ABA that began in February 2017.
