For former Folio Weekly staffers and editors, the alternative magazine’s closing leaves them wondering not only where journalists can find a footing in the industry, but where readers will be able to turn for its brand of community coverage. “We’re certainly losing the most robust arts coverage the area has,” said former Folio editor Claire Goforth, who left the publication in 2018 and is a freelance journalist. “A lot of people, probably like me, are losing an opportunity to see their work in print and work their way into journalism.” Publisher Sam Taylor announced May 5 on Folio’s website the magazine would cease publication after 33 years. Taylor said in a text the COVID-19 virus “killed our ad revenue.” SEE FOLIO, PAGE 2

KEEPING CLOSE – FROM A DISTANCE On May 4, the state began a phased reopening of some businesses shut down to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus. The Daily Record is reporting on small businesses as they confront the challenges of social distancing and financial hardships brought on by the pandemic and its aftermath.

Four months into 2021, there will be a 355-room Marriott convention hotel Downtown along the Southbank Riverwalk. There won’t be a major construction project. Instead, the Lexington Hotel & Conference Center Jacksonville Riverwalk at 1515 Prudential Drive will be rebranded the Southbank Hotel & Conference Center Jacksonville Riverwalk. The property will be part of Marriott Delta Hotels, said Bernard Moyle, president of Cal Vegas Ltd., operator of the property. “Marriott wants a full-service convention hotel in Downtown Jacksonville. We’ve been working on the conversion for about a year,” Moyle said. According to marriott.com, the Marriott Delta brand offers “the essentials for the modern frequent traveler and a lean and flexible operating model to drive results for owners and franchisees.” The Delta brand comprises 79 operating properties with nearly 19,000 rooms. Forty properties with more than 9,000 rooms are in the pipeline, the website indicates. Marriott operates 30 brands and more than 7,000 properties. The most visible change will be new signage along Prudential Drive. Moyle said the renovation completed in 2018, when the property opened with the Lexington brand, meets Marriott’s standards for SEE HOTEL, PAGE 2

Peloton coming to Town Center The city approved a permit May 4 for Peloton to build-out in the former Tommy Bahama space at St. Johns Town Center at a cost of $800,000. Peloton will stock treadmills, bikes and offer a trial test lounge. The company sells exercise equipment and virtual and on-demand classes. Contractor Terry Adams Inc. of Elizabethtown, Kentucky, will renovate 3,228 square feet at 4813 River City Drive, No. 107. Tommy Bahama moved across the street where it will open in a larger space with its Marlin Bar concept. It will be the seventh Peloton in Florida and one of at least 75 in the U.S.
