Gatlin buys former St. Johns dog track for Grand Cypress

Grand Cypress comprises a grocery anchor, stores, outparcels and two multifamily properties at the closed poker room and dog track at Race Track Road and U.S. 1.

Gatlin Development Co. Inc. plans a $250 million mixed-use development called Grand Cypress at the former greyhound racetrack and poker room site in St. Johns County after buying the nearly 100-acre property last week for $16.5 million. Gatlin purchased the land at 6256 and 6322 Race Track Road on May 26, according to deeds recorded May 28 with the St. Johns County Clerk of Court. The site is at southwest U.S. 1 and Race Track Road. The seller was Bayard Raceways Inc. The racetrack and poker room closed in 2012. Gatlin plans to demolish the existing structure. SEE CYPRESS, PAGE 2

Gatlin moves HQ from the Southbank to Baymeadows

The Jacksonvillebased retail developer relocates from Riverplace Tower to Deerwood Center to ease employee commutes. Gatlin Development Co. Inc., whose area retail projects include The Pavilion at Durbin Park in St. Johns County, moved its headquarters from Jacksonville’s Downtown Southbank to suburban Baymeadows. Gatlin relocated from its initial Jacksonville offices on the 19th floor of Riverplace Tower to the Reflections I office building in Deerwood Center. Gatlin opened at Riverplace Tower in mid-2015, when it relocated its headquarters from Fort Lauderdale. Principal Frankie Gatlin IV said May 24 the company moved about a month ago. “The main reason for moving was to create a shorter and quicker commute for all of our employees and they are very grateful so far with most of their commutes cut in half now,” Gatlin said. “For a while now we had wanted an easier, smaller and more low key building without all of the parking garages and eleva-

Lego fan convention coming to town in October The BrickUniverse LEGO Fan Convention is coming to the Jacksonville Fairgrounds. The event is Oct. 2-3 in the Expo Center, according to a news release. Professional Lego artist Jonathan Lopes from San Diego will showcase more than 30 of his displays, including a model of New York City’s Woolworth Building. He will talk to attendees about his life and job and how they can become Lego master builders.
