The next Downtown public art installation moved ahead June 2 when the Duval County Courthouse Plaza Stakeholder Committee approved during a Zoom meeting a motion to advance the project to the Art in Public Places Committee of the Cultural Council of Greater

Jacksonville. The site is a 2-acre green space in front of the building along West Adams Street. The project’s $619,000 budget, 0.75% of the courthouse construction cost, was set aside by a local ordinance for Art in Public Places installations. It’s the largest budget for an art installation since the program was established by City Council in 1997 – with the longest list of restrictions on what can be installed and where. When an artist or artists are selected for the project, they will design the plaza SEE ART, PAGE 2

The public art is planned for the area that is now a lawn in front of the Duval County Courthouse. Part of that area will be set aside for a street.

A group of Northeast Florida CEOs issued a joint statement condemning the “horrific actions” that led to the May 25 death of George Floyd in Minneapolis and urged public policies to “eradicate disparate access to opportunity.” The Jacksonville Civic Council, a group of nearly 80 CEOs from the region’s companies and organizations, released the statement June 5. “The Jacksonville Civic Council condemns the horrific actions that led to the death of George Floyd and supports all those who are peacefully seeking justice and demanding an end to racism,” the statement said. “As business leaders, we know that Jacksonville’s potential will never be achieved until everyone in this community is not only safe from violence, but receives equal treatment under the law and has full rights and equitable access to opportunities that many of us take for granted. “We stand against racism and discrimination of any kind. While sincere expressions of empathy, support and solidarity are appropriate, mere words are not enough. Accordingly, the Jacksonville Civic Council stands ready to work collaboratively with other community leaders and organizations to create and implement public policies that eradicate disparate access to opportunity while further seeking to advance policies that promote equitable quality of life outSEE CEOS, PAGE 2

Falcone applied through Beachwalk Retail Developers LLC for the project at northeast County Road 210 West and Beachwalk Boulevard. Plans show the almost 12-acre parcel with six apartment buildings, an amenity building, five garage buildings, a maintenance building, park space and 553 parking spaces. The site is across Beachwalk Boulevard from the 348-unit Sentosa Beachwalk apartments, renamed The Elysian.
