Pickleball, the quickly growing racket sport, is coming to the Toon Town building in Talleyrand. Jax Pickleball and European Street Cafe owner Andy Zarka, along with three business and pickleball partners Ricky Thais, JT Rhodes and Richard Parkes, propose adding two pickleball courts in the warehouse at 444 Talleyrand Ave. near TIAA Bank Field. It will be the area’s first indoor facility that is played on outdoorstyle courts. Zarka said there are indoor courts at the YMCA and several
churches. Those are wooden gym floors and with an indoor pickleball court. Like outdoor courts, the Toon Town facility will be concrete, but under cover and shielded from the elements. Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis. It is played on a badminton-size court that measures 44 feet by 20 feet, according to USA Pickleball. A standard tennis court is 78 feet by 36 feet and can be modified with tape or lines for pickleball play. “It hasn’t been done yet so we saw what seemed to be enough of a desire for it,” Zarka said. “We’ve seen what some places in other cities had done and four of us get along as a group when we’re playing on the court and thought let’s give it a go as a business ven-

The Women’s Board of Wolfson Children’s Hospital announced its speaker lineup for the 2021 Florida Forum Speaker Series, which will take place on three days in September, October and November. Performer Tim McGraw will kick off the forum Sept. 22. Four-time Super Bowl champion and TV broadcaster Terry Bradshaw will speak Oct. 26.
Maj. Gen. Charles F. Bolden Jr., a retired Marine officer, astronaut and former NASA administrator, will close out the series Nov. 17. All sessions will take place at the Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts. Former U.S. gymnast Shannon Miller, former Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end Jeff Lageman and former Jaguars broadcaster Jennifer Candelino will moderate the events. The Florida Forum hosts speakers
annually to raise awareness and funds for Wolfson Children’s Hospital of Jacksonville. Since it started in 1992, it has raised more than $9.2 million for the hospital. SUR Southside Quarter apartments sold for $75M SUR Southside Quarter apartments in Southside Quarter along Gate Parkway sold June 1 for $75 million. Houston-based Hines, which developed the apartments and is developing Southside Quarter, sold the property to San Diego-based Viewpoint Equities. Brian Moulder, Bobby Gatling and Dhaval Patel of Walker & Dunlop brokered the sale, Moulder said June 3. The per-unit sale price of the 306-unit complex was $245,000. Moulder said the property is 97% leased. The apartments, built in 2019, are at 7385 Park Village Drive.
