Gold-medal winning Olympic swimmer Nancy HogsheadMakar of Jacksonville is one of 10 finalists for the 2020 Florida Women’s Hall of Fame inductee class. She is the founder and CEO of Champion Women, an advocacy group for women and girls in sports. H o gs h ea d M a ka r wo n t h re e go l d medals and one silver medal for the U.S. in the 1984 summer Hogshead-Makar Olympics. Fo l l o w i n g her Olympic career, she practiced law with a firm for four years and was a professor at Florida Coastal School of Law for 12 years. The Florida Commission on the Status of Women announced the finalists Aug. 14. The commission accepts nominations every year for historic and contemporary women to the Hall of Fame, now in its 38th year. Gov. Ron DeSantis will select up to three of the nominees to be inducted into the Hall. The women nominated have “made significant contributions to the improvement of life for women and for all citizens of the state of Florida,” the commission said in a news release.

For 12th consecutive year, UNF wins wellness award The University of North Florida received the Platinum Level Award for the 2020 Healthiest Companies from the First Coast Worksite Wellness Council. It’s the 12th consecutive year the university has received the award, UNF said in a news release Aug. 14. The award is for UNF’s commitment to a healthy environment and improving the health and well-being of its campus community. The Platinum Level award is based on program offerings, services and performance in health behaviors, safety, physical activity, nutrition and weight management, mental health, organizational policies and prevention.
