The manufacturer of air-conditioning units for the military said it plans to consolidate its operations.
The city issued a permit Sept. 24 for Snowbird Technologies Inc. to build-out space to relocate its Southside business to the Charleston Building in Deerwood Center. G.F. Florida Operating Alpha is the contractor for the $500,000 project to make tenant improvements to almost 37,200 square feet of space at a cost of $365,000. Snowbird Technologies owner and CEO Scott Morse said July 21 the company expects to move from Victor Street to 7749 Bayberry Road in Deerwood Center. He estimated the investment at $500,000. ABOUT THE COMPANY What it makes: Snowbird Technologies makes airconditioning units for the military that can withstand extreme weather conditions, long term and in all environments, such as heat, sand, dust, saltwater and fog. Workers: About 20 people, of which 15 are production technicians who build the units. Snowbird buys the components and assembles and tests them in the Jacksonville facility.

Tractor Supply Co. wants to build a Jacksonville location in the Arlington area at northeast St. Johns Bluff Road South and Bahia Drive. Lawyer Paul Harden applied for a zoning exception at the site on behalf of land owner Pozin Six Children LLC. The exception is for permanent or restricted outside sale and service. The vacant 8.27-acre site is south of Atlantic Boulevard. Plans show a 19,097-squarefoot Tractor Supply Co. store with a fenced outdoor display area. Tractor Supply Co. has six area locations in Jacksonville at 9025 New Kings Road and in Orange Park, St. Augustine, Saint Johns, Macclenny and Yulee. The company, based in Brentwood, Tennessee, operates 1,900 stores in 49 states. It was founded more than 80 years ago. The company calls itself the largest rural lifestyle retailer in the U.S. and a one-stop shop for recreational farmers, ranchers and others. It sells products for the home, land, pets and animals with a focus on the needs of those living “Life Out Here.”

Preschool laying off 89 workers A preschool facility at the Citicards offices on Jacksonville’s Southside notified city and state officials it will have to remain closed for a least two more months, leaving 89 people out of work. Bright Horizons Children’s Centers at 14000 Citicards Way said it is “taking this action because of COVID-19-related business circumstances that were not reasonably foreseeable.” The preschool furloughed the workers April 30 expecting a closure of less than six months. Also, government contractor Amentum notifed the state that 13 workers at Naval Air Station Jacksonville may be laid off Oct. 26 because of an expiring military contract.
