The restaurant says work has begun to transform the closed Brio Tuscan Grille in The Markets at Town Center. Sugar Factory American Brasserie expects to open in The Markets at Town Center in late spring 2022, the company said Oct. 29. “Sugar Factory has brought its high-energy dining experience to guests at locations through-

out Florida – including Miami, Tampa, Orlando and Aventura – so Jacksonville was a natural choice for our next destination,” the company said in an emailed statement. It said it looks forward to bringing “a sweet escape for guests of all ages to the Jacksonville community.” Sugar Factory is renovating and leasing the closed Brio Tuscan Grille at 4910 Big Island Drive. The restaurant was built in 2012 for lease to Brio, which closed in January 2020. “We’ve already begun transforming the space into our next Sugar Factory location,” the restaurant company said. Renderings show an open, light-filled restaurant with a video wall in the main dining area; a retail candy store to the left of the entrance and a Candy Heart Wall to the right; the bar; outdoor patio dining; and two Instagram flower walls. Sugar Factory did not disclose the investment in the renovation. A pending building permit

shows at least a $2.5 million cost. It will lease the 8,535-footsquare building, which also has outdoor areas. Sugar Factory said it will have 179 seats in the main dining area, 20 bar stool seats and 107 outdoor patio seats. That totals 306 seats.

Hours will be 11 a.m.-midnight Monday-Thursday; 11 a.m.-1 a.m. Friday; 10 a.m.-1 a.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-midnight Sunday. It did not disclose the lease terms. SEE MATHIS, PAGE 2

The city issued a permit Oct. 27 for Target Corp. to add the “enhanced Apple experience” to its Mandarin store at 10490 San Jose Blvd. Groom Construction Co. Inc. of Salem, Massachusetts, is the contractor for the $310,000 project to build an Apple display unit, which includes adding and relocating fixtures, wall and floor finishes, and power and light updates. The store is in the Courtyard Shopping Center north of Interstate 295. The build-out is almost 2,700 square feet of space in the 138,286-square-foot store, which was built in 2000. The project groups Apple products and accessories in one space designed for customers to experience them through demonstrations and Target Tech Consultants who will receive specialized training from Apple. Minneapolis-based Target announced in February that the “new shopping experience” debuted online. Target began to roll out in select locations that month. Target said the dedicated space features new lighting fixtures and displays for iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, AirPods, HomePod, Apple TV and other accessories.

New Florida-Georgia contract includes higher payouts City leaders have secured TIAA Bank Field as the site for the annual Florida-Georgia football game through at least 2023. City Council voted 18-0 on Oct. 26 to enter a new contract with the athletic associations of the universities of Florida and Georgia to play the game in Jacksonville for the next three years. The contract has a two-year option for the city to host the game in 2024 and 2025. Under the new contract, the city will pay each school a $1 million royalty for this year’s game. That rises to $1.25 million per school in 2022 and 2023 and $1.5 million each if the athletic associations agree to the extension for 2024 and 2025. The new contract allows the city to receive revenue from game sponsorship rights. Jacksonville has hosted the rivalry game since 1933.
