There soon will be a place to custom-make scented candles in San Marco. Kristanna Barnes and her son, Hampton, plan to bring Wick: A Candle Bar to 1641 Hendricks Ave. Barnes said her goal is to be open by September 20. Customers will walk in, be shown to a candle wall with various scents and choose several they like. A worker will help them select the scents that work well together, the customer will mix the scents, pour the oil into the wax and then pay. After 90 minutes, the customer can return to pick up the candle. In that time, Barnes said customers will be encouraged to explore the surrounding San Marco area, look at shops or eat in restaurants. After visiting a candle bar in Cincinnati, Barnes brought the idea to Hampton and they decided to open the business together. She is a former chair and twoterm member of the Duval County School Board. With the addition of the San Marco Beach Buggy, a free ride service, Barnes said it will be easier for people to reach the store, surrounding shops and restaurants. Barnes said they also looked at an Avondale location because they wanted the store to be in a place where there wasn’t too much parking so people had to walk past it, no matter where they parked. Avondale was out of their price SEE CANDLE, PAGE 2
The 486-unit multifamily housing community is planned at former Southside Assembly of God church site. Chance Partners LLC can demolish a former church and several other buildings in the San Marco area for development of San Marco Crossing. Chance Partners founder Judd Bobilin said Thursday that site work is starting and demolition should begin Monday. “The market is great,” he said. The city issued permits Wednesday for Lockwood Quality Demolition Inc. to take down six structures at 2118 Kings Ave. and 1855 Bertha St. at a cost of almost $178,000. Southside Assembly of God relocated and sold the land to Chance Partners for $6 million. The permits come about a month after EJF Capital LLC of Arlington, Virginia, and Chance Partners announced the development of San Marco Crossing. The two-building, 486-unit multifamily housing community will be developed on almost 9 acres comprising three parcels in an area certified as an “Opportunity Zone” under the Tax Cuts

Autobahn Indoor Speedway adding restaurant, bar Autobahn Indoor Speedway & Events is adding a full-service restaurant, a bar serving beer and wine and up to 50 arcade games at its Jacksonville location. The city issued a permit Wednesday for Auld & White Constructors LLC to renovate the Southside venue at a cost of $1.2 million. Autobahn opened five years ago in an 80,000-square-foot building it leases at 6601 Executive Park Court N. off Interstate 95 and Butler Boulevard. Director of Operations Donald Wagner said he expected to complete the Jacksonville project by year-end. Autobahn will remain open during the construction.
