Trial Plant Details

and Performance Trials Three Locations, Three Different Views:

All locations are located in Orlando (USDA zone 9b). There are 68 varieties of annuals and perennials being tested to see how they perform in the heat and humidity of Central Florida’s climate. There are both sun and shade options with the trial.

Beautiful Harry P. Leu Gardens, Orlando, FL:

NOTES

Location #1 offers Floriculture Field Days’ shaded option for trialing. The garden is an amazing 50-acre botanical oasis just minutes from downtown Orlando. It serves as a strong outlet to the public where consumers can offer their opinion on what they would like to see in their own gardens. All areas feature the six varieties from each participating breeder/company but are designed from a more landscaping approach. • The majority of the gardens were planted the week of March 30 and will remain in the ground until mid-June. • Soil mix used at the site is Fafard 3B which consists of 48%Peat, 10% perlite, 11% vermiculite, 31% bark. • Valencia Community College student oversaw the gardens to keep at its best for approximately 10 weeks for 10 hours a week. Weeding and minimal plant maintenance were done. • Evaluations will take place three times at the site.

From floriculture industry trends to new plants and ideas; growers, landscape professionals and garden center retailers will find new and innovative concepts to take back to their businesses at FNGLA’s Floriculture Field Days. This conference is in its sixth year in Central Florida and expanded last year to include additional trial sites at both Harry P. Leu Gardens and the UF/IFAS Orange County Extension Service in addition to the site many are familar with: Walt Disney World. Proudly, FNGLA has been partnering with the University of Florida trialing floriculture crops and providing industry education for many years and 2015’s conference brings the best breeders, the best plants and the best event!

UF/Orange County Extension Services, Orlando, FL:

Location #2 offers a special micro-climate consistently 5 degrees cooler than the surrounding areas! It is full sun. This organized format has varieties placed in plots in the ground so industry members can view the performance of each variety separately. This location serves as a strong resource for local landscape professionals. • The majority of the gardens were planted the week of March 30 and will remain in the ground until mid-June. • Soil mix used at the site is Fafard 3B which consists of 48%Peat, 10% perlite, 11% vermiculite, 31% bark. • Valencia Community College student oversee the gardens to keep at its best for approximately 10 weeks for 10 hours a week. Walt Disney World Nursery, Orlando, FL:

Location #3 also offers full sun but the varieties are planted in raised beds with a different soil mix. By moving backstage to Disney’s newly-renovated area at the Walt Disney World Nursery, the trials can remain in the raised beds longer than previous years offering a better trial environment; receive more team attention; and, the results will be added to the list of varieties being evaluated and included in the National Plant Trial Database. Disney’s Horticulture team is also showcasing the trial process during the Epcot® International Flower & Garden Festival. • The majority of the beds were planted in early April and will remain in until mid-June. • Soil mix is 50% peat, 10% ¾ Pine bark, and 40% Sand • Full-time cast member will maintain the gardens • Evaluations will be taken three times at this site.

Impatiens x hybrida hort (New Guinea)

SunPatiens are an ideal choice for Florida landscapes given their low maintenance requirement and continuous flower power. Whether planted in full-sun or in bright, shady locations under Palm trees, SunPatiens thrive under Florida’s high heat and humidity. Given their strong growth, SunPatiens may require frequent watering during the first 2-3 weeks after transplanting. However, once established their vigorous root system penetrates deeply into the soil and water requirements become less demanding. SunPatiens grow rapidly under warm Florida nights, and their thick, glossy foliage, stems and flower petals are highly disease resistant. The plants are very forgiving and will completely recover from a strong wilt without losing the flower buds. For the Florida market, Sakata offers two types of SunPatiens: Compact and Spreading. Compact is a relative term (more directed at retailers) with plants reaching 24” to 30” tall by 22” to 28”wide. Spreading types are ideal for baskets and landscape applications where quick fill-in is essential. They grow similar to compact types with a height of 24” to 30” but with a wider habit spreading 30” to 36”. Dark flower colors (like red, magenta, etc.) may benefit from light shade or an eastern exposure due to potential flower scorching from Florida’s intense sunshine.
