Having just returned from FNGLA’s “Unconventional Convention” in Jacksonville, I feel like I always do. If you did not attend, you missed a great event. To start with, our Big Bend and Northeast Chapters are to be commended for their efforts. They did a great job creating a top notch affair under considerable constraints. I send a special thank you to Billy Butterfield for chairing the committee.

If you haven’t visited the Jacksonville Zoo, it needs to be on your “to do” list. I’ve heard it best described as a first-rate botanical garden with animals. At one point on our tour, we were told that where we were standing, there had been 8” of water a couple of days before. If they had not said so, we would never have known. They did a great job of cleanup in a very short time. It is, in fact, a wonderful botanical garden with great animal exhibits as a bonus.

When we turned on the TV in our room that Friday morning, the weather man was giving a virtual tour of the worst hit areas by Tropical Storm Debby. He specifically addressed the town of Glen St. Mary as one of the most severely affected.

FNGLA’s function that night was at Glen St. Mary Nurseries.

We did not know what to expect. All I can say is they worked some magic there. The unpaved road leading in was freshly graded. Nowhere was there evidence of the flooding and heavy tree damage from just days before. Many thanks to Lin and Magi Taber for all they and their Glen St. Mary Nurseries’ crew did to make it such a wonderful event. Thank you for the special brand of hospitality shown to all. And let me tell you about the Baker County “wine” tasting. On second thought, maybe another time.

FNGLA HAPPENINGS FNGLA Legislator of the Year Award Presented As part of FNGLA’s Industry Awards Program, FNGLA identifies key members of Florida’s policymakers whose legislative priorities and work ethic align with and benefit Florida’s nursery and landscape industry. For 2012, two legislators were chosen as recipients of this award.

State Senator Rene Garcia (R-Miami) has spent his legislative career fighting for small business. Among his many legislative efforts, Senator Garcia continues to fight for the protection of the Florida Department of Transportation’s landscape program, which requires 1.5% of new construction project dollars to be spent on trees and shrubs.

A true defender of small business, Representative Jimmie T. Smith (R-Lecanto) personifies the pro-business, agriculturefriendly ideals which benefit FNGLA members statewide. Representative Smith continues to be a fighter for common sense, and during the past two legislative sessions championed bills which would apply science and practical application to the regulation of fertilizers.

INDUSTRY NEWS ANLA & OFA Enter Joint Venture: OneVoiceOneIndustry.com Following several months of working together in a joint venture, the working group comprised of leaders from both The Association of Horticulture Professionals (known as OFA) and the American Nursery and Landscape Association (ANLA) organizations determined it was time to formally explore creating a new trade association.

OFA and ANLA announced in January 2012 the formation of a joint venture to support business education and government relations activities. The vision statement adopted by OFA’s board of directors expressed the desire to form a new organization if it brings more value to our members and the industry. Since June 2011, OFA’s executive committee has been meeting with ANLA’s leaders about the opportunity for and viability of a formal relationship between the two organizations. As early as the first meeting, the idea of forming a new organization has been discussed by the joint venture working group.

“We are listening to our members. Results of a membership and organizational study performed at the end of last year indicated that members of both associations want the organizations to work closer to unify the industry,” said OFA President Mike McCabe, owner of McCabe’s Greenhouse & Floral in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. “They want their industry association to be all encompassing – one that touches and links all pieces of the horticulture industry, which can be offered by a new organization. After significant exploration and evaluation the elected leadership of OFA determined this is the best way to meet the needs of our members and the industry.”

The multi-faceted horticulture industry is undergoing

dramatic changes. Economic strains, generational differences and the changing interest in and need for gardening and landscape products are altering the way our products and services are valued by consumers. Governmental activity and inactivity, financial uncertainty and environmental changes are altering the way plants are being produced, bought and sold. In light of future opportunities and threats in this quickly changing environment, trade associations need to work together to build the capacity and governance structures to properly serve their members and the industry.

The timeline is to have a new organization established no sooner than July of 2013 and no later than January 2014.

“This is not a merger. This is taking the best of what both associations do to create a new organization that will advance the industry and better serve our members,” said Michael V. Geary, CAE, OFA’s chief executive officer. “We have many details to work through, but OFA’s leaders are committed to ensuring that our members are involved in the decisionmaking process. It’s an exciting time for both organizations and the future of the horticulture industry.

The combined 215 years of service and resources will create a powerful and meaningful association.” The new association will replace OFA and ANLA. In further developments of the joint venture, following ANLA Executive Vice President Bob Dolibois’ scheduled retirement at the end of the year, Geary will become the chief staff executive of both ANLA and OFA beginning on January 1, 2013. The organizations will continue to be governed separately, but Geary will lead the day-today operations of both associations.

INDUSTRY NEWS SNA Announces New Atlanta Event The Southern Nursery Association (SNA)-- a regional U.S. nursery association-- has announced preliminary plans for an event in 2013, scheduled for August 5 - 7, 2013, at Atlanta’s Georgia International Convention Center (GICC),. This event will combine the SNA Research Conference, the Southern Plant Conference, the SNA State Officer’s Conference, and the Annual SNA Business Meeting.

This new regional event will bring together the industry’s

top leaders, researchers, growers, manufacturers, distributors, landscapers and retailers from across the southeast to share ideas, learn new techniques, address key industry issues and, locate new products.

“The response to this long-awaited event has received widespread positive reaction,” said Karen Summers, executive vice president of SNA. “This clearly indicates a strong industry need and a high level of confidence. SNA has a long history of producing successful events, and I am confident this will be another formula for success,” she added.

INDUSTRY NEWS All-American Selections Adds To Trialing Program After 80 years of exclusively trialing new seed varieties, All-America Selections (AAS) is making the decision to include vegetative ornamentals in the trialing program for 2013 marking the first year flowers from cuttings will be considered for an AAS award, reported Greenhouse Grower Magazine. Earlier this year, the organization revamped the program’s logo.

UF Researchers Map Citrus Greening Transmittal University of Florida researchers have released a mathematical model showing the process for transmitting citrus greening within an infected tree – a key step toward helping scientists further understand the devastating disease and its effects.

As the industry continues to shift to producing and consuming more vegetative varieties, AAS announced the organization will parallel its efforts to coincide with those of the industry. In a press release, AAS writes that adding vegetative entries broadens the scope of the organization on a very practical level and ensures its continued growth.

To most of today’s consumers, a flower is a flower, so granting the AAS Winner award to the best-performing flower entries, no matter if produced from seed or a cutting, reinforces the message that an AAS Winner provides superior garden performance.

Published recently by the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the model reveals that once a tree is infected, insecticides to control the pests that spread the disease may not be enough to halt the disease’s progression in the tree, and instead may only slow its spread within the tree.

The pilot program of trialing vegetative entries will begin in 2013. A select number of trial judges from across the U.S. and Canada have been invited to participate.

Breeders can begin submitting a limited number of entry applications this August with a deadline of November 1, 2012. Vegetative entries will be trialed in containers next to comparisons of similar vegetative varieties already on the market. All other aspects of the AAS Vegetative Ornamental Trials will closely resemble those of the flower seed trials.

Citrus greening, the common name for huanglongbing, or HLB, was first detected in Florida in 2005. The disease was discovered in a backyard citrus tree in Los Angeles earlier this year and now threatens California’s citrus industry.

Future AAS Winners from the Vegetative Trials will be announced at one of the three times, just as seed winners are: late January, early July or early November.

Removal of obviously diseased new growth, called flush, or shoots, is not a solution either. The model shows that even without showing symptoms, many shoots may already be infected so that infection of other parts of the tree can continue.

Greening has cost Florida’s economy an estimated $3.63 billion in lost revenues since 2006 and poses a huge threat to the state’s $9 billion citrus industry, the nation’s largest.

It weakens and eventually kills infected trees. For now, there is no cure, although growers are using cultural management strategies to keep groves productive. The disease is spread by a tiny insect called the Asian citrus psyllid.

INDUSTRY NEWS New Educational Resources from UF: Sustainability and IPM There are several new resources now available to county Extension faculty working with nursery producers. This information is being distributed to them through the District Extension Directors.

1) Moving Nursery Producers Toward Sustainability, http://snpp.caes.uga.edu/: This website hosts various resources pertaining to sustainable practices for nursery producers.

• Of the four tabs on the website, the tab labeled “Sustainability Resources (Links)” takes you to a page giving links, categorized by topic, to publications, powerpoints and other websites relevant to improving sustainability in the nursery.

The listing includes several new EDIS publications filling gaps in sustainability resources.

• A second tab, “Sustainability Videos”, contains a number of short, You-Tube-like videos, each covering an aspect of nursery sustainability. Six videos are currently on the site, and another six will be added as captioning is completed.

• These materials were developed by a team of faculty from UGA (Matthew Chappell), FAMU (Alex Bolques) and UF (Gary Knox and Linda Landrum) with the expert assistance of IFAS Communications (Michael Munroe and Al Williamson) and UGA IT (Emily Pitts). Thanks to Southern SARE for funding this UF-led effort!

2) New IPM Resource for Tree Producers: IPM for Select Deciduous Trees in Southeastern US Nursery Production is a book/multimedia compilation of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) information for the major tree genera in nursery crop production in the Southeast. This book covers sustainable management for insects, mites, diseases, and weeds for top selling trees, as well as production information with videos, color images and text.

• Each chapter is downloadable for free as a pdf through the Southern Nursery IPM Working Group (SNIPM) website, http://wiki.bugwood.org/SNIPM; a limited number of hard-copy books were printed.

• Alternatively, the 320-page book is available in iBook format for iPads through iTunes (http://www.apple.com/itunes/).

• Individual chapters cover birch (Betula spp.), cherry (Prunus spp.), crapemyrtle (Lagerstroemia spp.), dogwood (Cornus spp.), chinese elm (Ulmus parvifolia), magnolia (Magnolia spp.), maple (Acer spp.), oak (Quercus spp.) and redbud (Cercis spp.). Each chapter provides comprehensive information on the species, nursery production and sustainable management of that genus’ major pests, diseases, weeds and abiotic disorders. Additional chapters discuss container production, field production and a general overview of IPM. • University faculty from across the Southeast worked together to develop this important guide. The Southern Nursery IPM Working Group is a multi-disciplinary group of Extension professionals formed in 2008 to develop and deliver educational programming to the southern U.S. nursery industry and Extension personnel. Thanks to the Southern Region IPM Center for their support to make this resource possible!

CERTIFICATIONS FNGLA greets thousands of FFA members at Career Fair FNGLA took part in the Florida FFA Association 84th State Convention in June in Orlando. More than 3,000 FFA members, guests and supporters attended the convention – including a highlyinteractive Career Show where FNGLA introduced students to careers and certification in Florida’s nursery and landscape industry.

During the Career Show, FNGLA engaged FFA members with a game of horticulture-know-how to introduce them to FCHP certification. Lines formed in front of the FNGLA booth as students tested their industry knowledge. FNGLA also hosted a “teacher only” reception on the show floor which gave time to interact with those horticulture instructors who utilize FNGLA’s Certified Horticulture Professional (FCHP) program in their classrooms.

Students received awards, scholarships and recognitions funded through special projects of the Florida FFA Foundation. FNGLA’s Pinellas Chapter hosts Career Development Events in Floriculture and in Nursery & Landscape. FNGLA also sponsors the Landscape Management Proficiency Award.

The FFA mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education.

CERT/MEMBER NEWS FNGLA Honored with Career & Technical Education Award FNGLA was honored by the Florida Association of Career and Technical Educators (FACTE) with the Hall of Fame Award during its annual convention in July. FACTE is the professional association for career and technical educators who prepare individuals to participate in a world class workforce.

The Hall of Fame was established to perpetually recognize outstanding and distinguished professional career and technical educators and support professionals, organizations

or businesses, who have made a long term significant impact on the field of career and technical education in Florida.

FNGLA and its director of industry certifications and career development, Merry Mott, were recognized for developing a seamless link between FNGLA and Florida’s agriculture educators who deliver FNGLA’s Certified Horticulture Professional (FCHP) program. FNGLA assists instructors by providing teacher training, as well as lesson plans, sample tests, labs and PowerPoint presentations through its website TeachHort.com.

FCHP is approved by both Workforce Florida and the Florida Department of Education as it conforms to the 2007 Florida Career and Professional Education Act (CAPE). CAPE aims to meet Florida’s workforce needs of access to high-wage and high-demand careers. More than 250 high school students and instructors currently hold the FCHP designation.

Incarceration to Liberation: Reducing Recidivism through Horticulture Training & Certification In an effort to save taxpayer dollars and reduce the number of repeat offenders, UF/IFAS Sumter County Extension is providing inmates bona-fide job skills prior to release. This vocational horticulture education program is offered to low security inmates of the Federal Correctional Center in Coleman, Florida through a contract with the Department of Justice Bureau of Prisons.

Since beginning the program in October 2011 with instructor FCLC Dale Wallace, over 65 inmates have successfully trained and earned the FNGLA Certified Horticulture Professional

(FCHP) designation. This program provides a trained and certified workforce for Florida’s nursery and landscape industry. In fact, at least one inmate has been released and hired by an FNGLA member company. Those companies who hire these qualified workers upon release can earn a Federal Tax Credit of up to $2,400, as well as a no-cost fidelity bond.

Bureau of Prisons research shows that a released inmate is 35% less likely to return to prison if they have received vocational training. Since the average annual cost of incarceration is over $28,000, this program could save taxpayers more than $1 million per year. And the program is funded by the profits from the prisoner’s commissary.
