PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Billy Butterfield, FCLC FNGLA 2015-2016 President

Florida’s Nursery and Landscape Professionals are Fortunate From U.S. Congress: “H.R.2606 - Roads Not Roses Act by Representative Vicky Hartzler, Republican from Missouri.” “A BILL to discontinue funding for landscaping and scenic enhancement. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress.” Most of us earn our livelihood from plants, trees or flowers, or whatever it takes to sow, grow, install or maintain them in the right places. We are fortunate Florida Statutes require at least 1.5% of the amount contracted for FDOT road construction projects to be allocated for plant material on projects. That’s tens of millions of dollars’ worth of trees and shrubs every year purchased from our members. It is the policy of the Florida Department of Transportation to conserve, protect, restore and enhance Florida’s natural resources and scenic beauty when constructing and maintaining the State Highway System. FNGLA partnered with FDOT last year by creating a liaison committee and four task forces to work with the agency. We wish to ensure FDOT and the citizens of Florida get their money’s worth from the wise purchase of these plants and trees. You don’t have to travel too far down Florida’s state roads to see the new “BOLD” landscaping being installed on our roadways. FNGLA is working hard to ensure we don’t ever see a bill come up in Florida like U.S. Rep. Hartzler has introduced in Washington, DC. I was lucky enough to attend the SNA in Atlanta this past month with FNGLA’s Linda Adams. We had the opportunity to meet with association executives and presidents from many of the states throughout the Southeast, from Virginia to Texas. What an upbeat and professional group of people and what a great experience it was for me to sit and listen to so many of the people who have made our industry what it is today. Many of the questions and topics that came up were eventually directed to us to learn how Florida handles each issue. From Trade Shows to Educational Programs to Certification, FNGLA was on top of it. Clearly, our trade shows are cuttingedge and growing. We are constantly adjusting our educational programs to fit our attendees’ desires. And, FNGLA’s professional certifications are growing by leaps and bounds. While we didn’t have all the answers, we were looked to as the

leaders on most of the issues affecting the rest of the Southeast. Kudos to our professional staff and all the past FNGLA board members and officers who have kept FNGLA on the cuttingedge of associations. It was great to be sitting at that table. It’s always nice to be recognized by your peers for a job well done. Every year, FNGLA’s Action Chapter recognizes a member who has contributed to the growth and well-being of the horticulture industry. This years’ recipient of the Gene A. Batson Award is Dr. Lance Osborne. While there are always a good group of nominees, Dr. Osborne stood out from the pack for his years of service at the UF/IFAS Mid Florida Research and Education Center in Apopka. Local growers tell stories of emailing Dr. Osborne on Sundays about problems they would see while working in their greenhouses, and getting responses to their questions the same day. Always ready to help a grower solve a problem which could otherwise mean thousands of dollars in misspent money or even a crop failure, Dr. Osborne is always available and willing to help. I understand when last years’ recipient, Wayne Mercer of Mercer Botanicals, told Dr. Osborne of this honor, he asked if Wayne was sure he had the right guy. He wasn’t looking for that pat on the back, yet he sure deserves it. Thanks to Farm Credit of Central Florida for sponsoring the luncheon on August 24 in Apopka when Dr. Osborne will be honored. State Senator Alan Hayes will be the keynote speaker. Even if you don’t have a formal event to honor an individual in your chapter, go out and give someone a big pat on the back. Let them know how much you appreciate them for all they do. There are many in each FNGLA chapter who deserve it.

Billy Butterfield, FCLC AmeriScapes Landscape Management Services, LLC (Orlando) ameriscapes-landscape@att.net

To plan for the holiday season, please let FNGLA’s Linda Adams know your party date so we can plan to see as many chapter members as possible. We currently have three on the calendar (listed to the right).

The Landscape Show/SHARE Golf Tournament Swings Over to Shingle Creek What is SHARE? UF’s Institute of Food & Agricultural Sciences (IFAS) has research and education programs that develop new technological advances for the industry through its SHARE program (Special Help For Agricultural Research & Education).

Shingle Creek Golf Course, recognized as one of the top courses in Orlando and located within two miles of the Orange County Convention, is the new home of The Landscape Show/SHARE Golf Tournament. The tournament will take place on Wednesday, September 23, one day prior to the opening of The Landscape Show. Since it began in 1994, The Landscape Show/SHARE tournament has become a favorite event for golfers. Shingle Creek Golf Course offers an exceptional course at a very convenient location for anyone attending The Landscape Show. Shingle Creek Golf Course presents golfers of all levels the chance to play tournament conditions at an affordable rate. The course is known for its large, undulating greens, plush fairways and an abundance of water hazards. Golf registration fee is only $115, a great bargain for this exciting course! Back by popular demand are package prices for mulligans, red tee shots and the Par 3 Challenge. Registration includes green and cart fees and lunch. Awards will be given to the top three teams, closest to the pin and longest drive. This annual fundraiser, hosted by FNGLA’s Allied Division, has raised more than $168,500 since 1994 to benefit the FNGLA Endowed Research Fund at SHARE/UF. Participating in the golf tournament is an excellent way to support the industry while enjoying a morning of sports with colleagues. “The FNGLA/SHARE Golf Tournament provides essential support to equip UF/IFAS to better serve the industry,” noted Dr. Jack Payne, IFAS Senior Vice President. “Due to the generosity of FNGLA members, the tournament’s proceeds are allocated for the FNGLA Research Endowment which annually provides funding to support horticulture research and education. We continue to appreciate our friends at FNGLA.” Sponsorship opportunities are available. Sponsors will receive exposure at the tournament and also at The Landscape Show. Register online to reserve your spot. For more information call FNGLA at 800-375-3642 or email ladams@fngla.org.

FNGLA’s goal is to provide sustainable funding to benefit the nursery and landscape industry. FNGLA’s endowment is worth over $1 million and interest earned from the endowment on an annual basis goes to fund research projects selected by industry members to be conduct by the University of Florida. The State of Florida offers a great incentive for gifts to its state universities. For every $100,000 received into the fund, the state is committed to provide 50% in matching funds (annually appropriated). University of Florida endowments spend only 5% of their annual earnings even if the Foundation’s investments generate a higher return. This protects the investment over time. See the list of FNGLA-funded research projects by year: https://www.fngla.org/ education-and-research/research/search. aspx?framelink=https://www.fngla.org/ education-and-research/research/resinfo. asp?action=search

Support FNGLA’s Efforts It’s easy to show support for FNGLA’s Endowed Research Fund at SHARE: golf in The Landscape Show/SHARE Golf Tourney; be active in FNGLA Chapter events which support SHARE; or, make a direct contribution to the fund. FNGLA HAPPENINGS FNGLA Connects With Future Industry Leaders As students and teachers took their summer breaks to participate in conferences and conventions, FNGLA was there to continue its support of horticulture education – and attract the best and brightest to our industry. In June, the Florida Association of Agriculture Educators hosted its national conference in Orlando. This was the perfect audience to thank those educators who support FNGLA’s Certified Horticulture Professional (FCHP) program and to introduce certification to other agriculture educators. FNGLA proudly sponsored this event. Later, FNGLA participated for its tenth year in the FFA statewide convention. This annual event attracts 6,000 students, teachers and parents for a week of leadership, awards and fellowship. FNGLA sponsored the Teacher Reception and took part in the Career Expo, introducing students to Florida’s nursery and landscape industry through a horticultural trivia game. Thanks to FCLT Sarah Rosen of Leu Gardens for being a part of the Expo. FNGLA was recognized for its sponsorship of the FFA program and FNGLA’s Frontrunners Chapter was presented the prestigious Blue and Gold Award. This award is for outstanding service and commitment to Florida FFA and was presented to Ed Bravo (Big Trees Plantation, Newberry) of the Frontrunners Chapter for landscaping the new FFA headquarters in Gainesville. FNGLA takes part in programs like these to encourage today’s youth to look to Florida’s nursery and landscape industry as a viable career path. For more information on FNGLA’s career development programs, contact Merry Mott at FNGLA or call 800-375-3642.

The prestigious Blue & Gold Award is among the highest honorary awards presented by Florida’s FFA state organization. INDUSTRY NEWS UF/IFAS Citrus Research and Education Center Names New Center Director The University Florida named Michael Rogers as director of the Citrus Research and Education Center in Lake Alfred. He had been acting as interim director since November for the center, which operates under the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. CREC was established in 1917 after a group of Polk County citrus growers raised nearly $14,000 to purchase some land for a research station. Originally, only a few UF scientists were assigned to the Lake Alfred site, then called the Citrus Experiment Station. Today, CREC employs 250 people and is also home to the scientific research staff of the Florida Department of Citrus. It is the largest facility in the world devoted to a single commodity, citrus. Rogers has a doctorate in entomology from the University of Kentucky and specializes in citrus integrated pest management. He has focused on the Asian citrus psyllid, the insect that carries the bacterium that causes citrus greening, which is threatening to destroy the state’s $10.7 billion citrus industry.

Michael Rogers was named director of the UF/IFAS Citrus Research and Education Center in Lake Alfred.

INDUSTRY NEWS Special Session on Florida Redistricting Rescheduled Leaders in both chambers announced, the Florida Legislature will hold yet another special session October 19 through November 6 to redraw the state Senate district lines. The Florida Supreme Court earlier threw out Florida’s congressional districts and ordered new maps be drawn before the 2016 elections. Unconstitutional political gerrymandering was the call. This directly impacts eight of Florida’s 27 congressional districts as well as any bordering districts. Senate President Andy Gardiner, R-Orlando, and House Speaker Steve Crisafulli, R-Merritt Island, insisted in a memo sent to legislators that the Supreme Court decision “introduced new legal precedent” which would carry over to the state Senate districts and ordered staffers to start assembling the new maps while ensuring legislators and political consultants are kept out of the process. In 2010, voters passed two state constitutional amendments regarding redistricting to ensure less partisan motivations in the process. FNGLA Membesr can expect updates, via Ben’s Bullets, on how this might affect the industry.

10 Years Without a Hurricane: Looking Back to the 2005 Season The 2005 Atlantic hurricane season was the most active Atlantic hurricane season in recorded history, shattering numerous records. The impact of the season was widespread and ruinous with an estimated 3,913 deaths and record damage of about $159.2 billion. A record twenty-eight tropical and subtropical storms formed and a record fifteen of them became hurricanes. Of these, a record seven strengthened into major hurricanes, a record-tying five became Category 4 hurricanes and a record four reached Category 5 strength, the highest categorization for hurricanes on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale. Among these Category 5 storms were hurricanes Katrina and Wilma, respectively the costliest and the most intense Atlantic hurricanes on record. While most people recall the images of New Orleans and its surrounding areas, South Florida was the first U.S. location significantly impacted by this ravenous storm. Then within weeks following Katrina’s devastation, South Florida was impacted again by Wilma, which ranks as the strongest storm of the season, measured 185 mph sustained winds. Florida has escaped the effects of a hurricane these past 10 years and we’ve grown in population by 2.5 million people. In the last few years, the jet stream has dipped over the East Coast, bringing cold and stormy winters — a weather pattern that can draw storms, such as Sandy, up to the Northeast and away from Florida. And while 2015’s season has brought no activity, so far the nursery and landscape industry is particularly vulnerable to wind, water and storm events. El Nino, the warming of the tropical eastern Pacific Ocean, is the main factor in the current storm suppression-- yet nursery and landscape operations should always be vigilant during Hurricane Season. FNGLA has hurricane preparedness information ready for your use: http://www.fngla.org/resources/hurricane/index.aspx.

INDUSTRY NEWS Florida Ag in the Classroom Introduces New Logo Florida Agriculture in the Classroom, Inc. (FAITC) has a new look. The Gainesvillebased non-profit organization has adopted a new logo prominently featuring an orange, Florida’s signature crop. “We wanted a fresh, new look that clearly identified Florida Agriculture in the Classroom as representing our state’s agricultural industry,” said Tamara Wood, the organization’s chairwoman. “What better way to do that than to add an orange to the logo.” FAITC took its cue from the National Agriculture in the Classroom Organization (NAITCO), which recently updated its logo to include an apple, the universal symbol of teachers. “With Florida leading the way in the production of citrus, FAITC board members felt it would be an obvious choice to represent our organization and its roots,” Wood said. FAITC provides Florida teachers and students in kindergarten through 12th grade with learning lessons, materials, workshops, grant money and other items to teach reading, writing, nutrition, science, social studies and more. FAITC’s main source of funding comes from sales of the agriculture specialty license plate nicknamed the ‘Ag Tag.’ The cost of an Ag Tag is $25 above the regular cost of renewing a Florida license plate of which $20 goes to FAITC programs.

INDUSTRY NEWS Plant-Something.org Directs Nation’s Consumers to Florida Plants

Fresh From Florida’s Impact is Great

“Fresh From Florida” represents Florida’s farmers, growers, nursery professionals, ranchers and fishermen who produce some of the highest quality products in the world - and there’s new data to prove so.

Plant-Something.org is a national consumer promotional campaign designed to inspire gardening enthusiasts and then direct them to resources within their state. The site includes promotional videos, information on the value and benefits of plants and landscapes and an easy-to-find map pushing consumers to more localized information. FNGLA is a proud Plant-something.org partner. As this promotion continues to catch fire nationally, FNGLA will steer consumer interest pushed from www.plant-something.org via our consumer website, www.FloridaGardening.org. Plant-Something.org’s video asks consumers to imagine a world without plants or trees in an effort to send the message: plants, trees and landscapes add beauty and value to your property. From the Plant-Something.org website, “When you plant a tree or plant, you get plenty more than just pretty flowers and leaves. FNGLA is fortunate to have so many supporters who help make our professional certifications the standard for Florida’s nursery and landscape industry. This month we recognize Parrish Nursery in Parkland for its continued support of FNGLA’s South Florida test site. Whenever plants are needed for the exam, there is just one call that needs to be made. Live plant material assures exam applicants can demonstrate their skills in Plan Layout and Plant Identification in a “real-world” setting. Thank you Parrish Nursery!

Shell Point Highlights Certified Professionals With “Wall of Fame” FNGLA member Shell Point Retirement Community believes in education of their employees, and takes it one step further by promoting their teams’ success on a Wall of Fame. This wall of certifications and awards in landscape manager and FCHP Steve Morton’s office, is a visual reminder of Shell Point’s professionalism. In addition to the general industry education they do, Steve believes FNGLA’s Certified Horticulture Professional (FCHP) program is valuable to their organization, helping their employees better understand the complexities of horticulture. Steve says Plant Identification helps his team better know the commonly-grown plants, but, more importantly, it contributes to the ability of all our members to understand their unique special language. “Successful completion of the test is great for an individual’s confidence and helps gain them respect within the team,” Steve explains. “I have observed that employees who have achieved FCHP certification are more likely to autonomously make positive horticulture decisions.” An award-winning retirement resort near the Gulf of Mexico, Shell Point has set the standard for retirement living – with their landscapes taking a major role in its success. Their entire team holds some sort of professional industry designation with 13 FNGLA Certified Professionals on staff!

The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens is familiar to many in the industry. The 2013 FNGLA Annual Convention offered an optional tour to the Zoo. Weed Recede® Recognized for its Environmental Impact Think Beyond Plastic, a social impact venture that focuses on innovation as a vehicle to combat plastic pollution, recently recognized Weed Recede as their Most Innovative Emerging Business. Bob Hawkinson, Co-Founder of TLC Total Lawn Care, Inc. and inventor of Weed Recede used his more than 30 years experience to develop the product which has the potential impact to eliminate approximately 2 billion plastic bags from the environment. Weed Recede is an all-in-one, soil degradable bioplastic mulch bag that replaces the need to use obsolete petroleum-based packaging for lawn care and landscaping materials that are often non-recycled and end up as an environmental pollutant. Weed Recede’s design also effectively suppresses weeds, reduces the use of herbicides and holds in moisture. “I’ve always disliked the fact that so much of the materials used in lawn care and landscaping are packaged in plastic,” admits Hawkinson, “but historically, the technology has been slow to address the issue of plastic pollution. As of a few years ago, with the introduction of bio-plastics and plant-based materials used in consumer products, it made sense to me to apply this information to my business. Weed Recede represents the next stage in technology that embeds purpose in the packaging. It simplifies the delivery system for installing mulch in a faster, easier, more eco-friendly way that helps to eliminate billions of plastic bags from ending up in the ocean or landfills.”

Bob Hawkinson founded Weed Recede which may eliminate up to 2 billion plastic bags from the environment.
