TPIE 2013: Celebrating 40 Years of Tropical Industry Success It’s not always you get nearly 6,000 people to show up for a 40th anniversary celebration, but that was the case for the 2013 Tropical Plant Industry Exhibition. Thousands of industry professionals from around the world came to Ft. Lauderdale to do business with one another, learn industry trends and insights, as well as find new ideas and resources for improved business success. Taking place January 23-25 at the Broward County Convention Center, TPIE drew attendees from 46 different countries. With nearly 400 companies exhibiting in TPIE, it continues to be the best resource for tropical plants and foliage and related supplies and services in the world. “TPIE 2013 was a great experience for everyone who was here,” reported Charlie Martin, H. B. Martin, Inc. and chairman of TPIE. “You could feel the positive energy and sense the upbeat attitudes and all-around excitement. There were plants from floor to ceiling, all types: big and small, indoor, outdoor, and patio with fabulous colors in both the flowers and the leaves. It was fantastic!” Nearly 100 people opted to come in a day early and take part in the TPIE Road Show. Participants toured four diverse nurseries in Homestead: Florida Tuxedo Plants, Plants in Design, Consolidated Foliage and DeLeon’s Bromeliads, with a lunch stop at the Fruit and Spice Park. The first day of the show opened with an enlightening presentation by Dan Waldschmidt, blog author of Edgy Conversations. Dan not only provided practical ideas and business considerations for the full-house audience, he offered complimentary oneon-one consultations for interested attendees the remainder of the day. Sponsored by Hermann Engelmann Greenhouses and SK, TPIE’s Opening Session has become a popular first hour of TPIE to get a positive, yet critical, business mind-set before getting out on the show floor.
