Moving Forward...Together at FNGLA’s Annual Convention June 23 - 25, 2011 LaPlaya Beach and Golf Resort, Naples, FL FNGLA’s Annual Convention is a time each year for FNGLA members and industry friends to celebrate the past year’s success while welcoming FNGLA’s new leadership taking office. After checking in Thursday, bring the family to the Welcome Reception on Vanderbilt Bay. Held at the resort as the sun goes down, the Welcome Reception is the perfect way for all early-bird attendees and golfers to set the tone for a relaxing weekend. On Friday morning, golfers will be up early to play on the Championship Robert Cupp-designed LaPlaya Golf Course. Come see for yourself why this course is lauded for its natural beauty and often mentioned in the lists of the country’s best resort courses. Friday evening’s dinner event, Sunset Soirée, will be held along the Gulf of Mexico, making this the ideal location for dinner and watching the sunset with friends & family. A southern-style buffet will be served while you relax to the sounds of steel drums by the water. After two full days of fun in the sun, things will move indoors for FNGLA’s Annual Business Meeting on Saturday morning. This meeting is the platform for showcasing FNGLA’s 2011 Industry Award winners, as well as the induction ceremony of FNGLA’s 2011 – 2012 leaders. A membership luncheon after the meeting will allow for even more networking time and to enjoy the featured guest speaker, Mike Joyner, Assistant Commissioner/Chief of Staff for Florida’s Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Saturday evening’s Presidents’ Gala, sponsored by Stallings Crop Insurance, will have you dancing until the end of the party. FNGLA members, friends and families will come together to dine, dance and honor the FNGLA Hall of Fame inductees and Wendell E. Butler award winner! PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Carolan Mahr FNGLA 2010-2011 President

Dear Members, We have the Floriculture Fields Days on May 12 -13; it’s not too late to join in this educational opportunity being held in conjunction with the Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival. And, it’s time to start making your plans to attend the Annual Convention. Membership renewals have been going out over the past couple of weeks. In your renewal packet, there is a nice one-page handout with the many ways to get the most value out of your membership. We know membership to one person is not the same to another. So, over the years, FNGLA has added value to your membership by offering member benefits and services, networking opportunities through Chapters, government advocacy, and visibility of the industry though the FNGLA website, Online Plant and Product Locator, and consumer public relations. Some of these can save you money, some can enhance your customer base, some do their very best to protect your business interest when it comes to regulations being imposed. Yet most of all, FNGLA is much like a family - no we don’t always agree on everything or how it’s being done, but we always come together and unite as one when we must. My thoughts are FNGLA membership offers more than just discounts; by sending in your membership dues you will save tenfold for what you write that check! Let’s get those membership renewals in today!

On the topic of networking opportunities, we have our Annual Convention coming up on June 23-26 at the LaPlaya in Naples. This is a great opportunity to talk with your fellow members, catch up on what has gone on for the year, celebrate accomplishments and take time for fun in the sun. This year’s theme is “Moving Forward Together.” This was chosen because it has been a tough couple of years, yet we are moving forward. Our business may not look the same, but just like the turtles in the brochure, we move forward, slowly and with direction to meet our objectives. So, I invite you to Naples to celebrate another year of FNGLA and fellow nursery person’s accomplishments, enjoy a great beach party planned Friday night with steel drums, a great hospitality suite, and a gala evening of passing of the “big” shoes. Before I close, I would be remiss if I did not say “thank you” to all who have participated in FNGLA’s immigration grassroots of the past couple of weeks and to Jim Spratt for his “boots on the ground” work on this issue. As of this letter, we don’t know the outcome. Yet, I know when our membership is called upon they respond. We can do better, so please when you get a grassroots alert, take a minute to contact your representative and senator. And, pass it along to employees, family and friends; we need all the voices we can get! Until next month: “If you’ve never been thrilled to the very edges of your soul by a flower in spring bloom, maybe your soul has never been in bloom.” ~Terri Guillemets

CERTIFICATION Pinellas Attracts Professionals to Certified Landscape Technician Exam FNGLA’s Pinellas Chapter kicked off 2011 with a highly successful FNGLA Certified Landscape Technician (FCLT) exam at Pinellas Technical Education Center in St. Petersburg March 5th. Certified Judges from Florida and the Bahamas judged the landscape installation skills of 17 professionals in areas such as tree installation, plant identification, equipment operation, irrigation repair and palm banding. Special thanks to Glenn Duncan, FCLC of Glenn Duncan Landscape Maintenance, for his skills at preparing exam applicants through his training class prior to the exam. For more information, contact Merry Mott at FNGLA at 800-3753642 or see the certification section of FNGLA’s website.

A variety of tree staking techniques could be a part of the FCLT exam. SeaWorld Parks’ Gary Weitermann, FCLMT, tests an applicant on traditional upright stakes.

FNGLA Certified Landscape Designer Exam Revamped After years of working with subject matter experts to update FNGLA’s Certified Landscape Designer (FCLD) program, the exam is ready to be launched in mid-2011. The FCLD exam has been revamped to include more emphasis on plant selection, sustainable landscape design and business/project management. The exam will be administered on a new online testing software that allows more flexibility for the test taker and will provide better reporting to FNGLA on applicant progress. For more information, contact Merry Mott at FNGLA at 800-375-3642 or see the certification section of FNGLA’s website.

Training courses are available annually at Indian River State College and Pinellas Technical Education Center.
