TPIE Offers Business Advantages to All FNGLA Members The Tropical Plant Industry Exhibition (TPIE) is well-known as the premier trade event for the tropical plant and foliage industry. Yet, it offers more than a marketplace for FNGLA members who buy and sell foliage. To be held on January 23-25th in Ft. Lauderdale, FNGLA members will find many different aspects to apply in a new business year. As a new attendee to TPIE, Billy Butterfield, FCLC, general manager of Ameriscapes Landscape Management Services in Orlando was pleased to see how much at the show applied to his landscape maintenance business. “I was surprised by the number of exhibitors at TPIE who had products and services pertinent to my business. I’ve incorporated new and different plant materials on some of my projects which have worked well thanks to ideas and information I gained at TPIE,” explained Butterfield. “There’s a lot of energy at this show and it’s a very good way to start the new business year.” With the price of a badge, FNGLA members have access to a unique mix of exhibiting companies – and more! You can attend the TPIE Opening Session for a cutting-edge perspective on strategies to drive the core of your business in today’s fast-paced, technologydriven marketplace. Dan Waldscmidt, author of Edgy Conversations, will help business managers move from making decisions based on conventional wisdom and instead focus on the unique touch points of your business that will deliver greater success.

Use TPIE’s Mobile Web/App to pre-plan your time at the show! Scan this barcode to start your planning!

Throughout the three show days, FNGLA members can take advantage of a variety of demonstration topics. These short and fast-paced presentations are right on the show floor. They offer peer-to-peer sharing on topics such as “Green Weddings Are What’s Next,” “Bromeliad Beauty in the Landscape,” and “Interest in Pinterest.” FNGLA Certification CEUs are offered for attending the demonstrations, as well as TPIE’s Opening Session. Even more educational programs are available through the TPIE Short Course to those who work in or with the Interiorscape side of the industry. There will also be on-point, yet more general topics related to HR and people-engagement skills. Partnering this year with FNGLA on the TPIE Short Course are OFA and PLANET, providing a national, multi-association (continued page 3)

PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Wes Parrish FNGLA 2012-2013 President

Membership Expansion, Our Future As 2012 drew to a close, we began looking forward to another year. In our businesses, we hope for another year of financial improvement. Being involved in the leadership of FNGLA, I look at our Association’s future as well. Due to strong fiscal controls, FNGLA is in an exceptionally strong position even with declining revenues, yet this cannot continue without end. Our trade show committees have been very concerned for several years. We have seen the loss of many trade shows around the country, yet our two events continue to perform. These two committees strive to make the shows relevant to the industry in ways never thought of in years past. Even changes were made to the days of the shows, the educational sessions and the show layouts themselves. FNATS was renamed The Landscape Show to telegraph to those who never attended, exactly what this show is about. New potential attendees are targeted each year helping to attract new and returning buyers to the shows, and value-added propositions are added each year to make each event new, interesting and a “must see” industry happening each year. Living in such an urban region, Broward County, we have been concerned for longer than most areas of the state, as our production area, and hence number of nurseries, shrinks. Attempts continue to engage the landscape portion of our industry. Even though FNGLA has had a landscape division for years, and changed our name to include landscape professionals in it, we still are just beginning to draw this

large segment into our fold. Landscape firms in South Florida deal with installation inspections on a daily basis. Our FNGLA Broward Chapter has met with the Landscape Inspectors Association of Florida almost yearly to engage our two groups so we understand each other’s concerns better. This has helped involve our area’s landscape firms. We recently held a tail-gate trade show on a weekday evening. We know our customers are extremely busy and it is difficult to find the time to travel to trade shows. For a first-time event, we were quite happy with the turnout of over 130 attendees. We have also developed an FNGLA certification test site to assist local firms in attaining professional certification status. This is not the answer for every FNGLA chapter. It is not even the total answer for our chapter. It is an example of one group’s efforts to draw in potential members to join our industry efforts. If we want new members, we must offer something relevant to their businesses. Every chapter is different, yet there are opportunities in each for membership expansion. We need to ask ourselves: what are the area’s specific concerns? What keeps potential members up at night? How can we address these issues locally or at the state level to encourage industry professionals to join our member ranks? I believe the landscape portion of our industry is at least as independent as the nursery segment, yet I also believe our slogan applies equally to both. We need to remember: “In unity there is strength” and spread the word.

FNGLA HAPPENINGS

(from page 1) perspective for this popular educational program. As reported by Cindy Krischer Goodman of the Miami Herald, face-to-face meetings with vendors and clients are more important than ever. TPIE offers the perfect venue to interact casually with other FNGLA members and potential business resources and customers, particularly at the TPIE Happy Hour. Sponsored by SunParasol Suntory Collection, the TPIE Happy Hour is a main event taking place at the end of the trade show day on Wednesday. The outdoor setting of the party makes it a relaxing time to meet and engage. TPIE also offers a unique opportunity to support industry research through the NFF Silent Auction. Although titled, the National Foliage Foundation (NFF), research projects funded by NFF cover a range of industry needs and challenges beyond foliage production and sales. This first-time auction will not only offer FNGLA members unique items to win, but also provide a lot of fun to support industry research. • A TPIE First Timer’s Orientation will take place at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, January 23rd. This special session not only welcomes those who are attending TPIE for the first time, it also provides show details and information on the programs, as well as a chance to meet industry volunteer leaders who can be of assistance throughout the show. The 2013 TPIE Short Course offers an exclusive TPIE Road Show which tours nurseries and related companies in the Homestead area. This is a separate ticketed event, so it’s not included with your TPIE trade show badge. Two days of educational sessions geared to interiorscapers are offered at the TPIE Short Course for a nominal fee. Discounted prices are available through January 7th. For the first time ever, the TPIE Short Course is being produced by an exciting partnership among FNGLA, OFA and PLANET. New at 2013 TPIE is a TPIE mobile website: http://m.tpie.org. Especially designed for mobile devices, this website allows easy access to create your TPIE agenda, search the exhibitor directory, find booths on the TPIE floor plan, search for plants and products and keep up with show happenings and events. As part of its 40th anniversary celebration, you’re invited and encouraged to share TPIE memories on TPIE’s Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/TropicalPlantIndustryExhibition. Be sure to post how old you are in TPIE years! We know there are some people who have been to all 40. Don’t be shy! TPIE Housing is now open through EventSphere, TPIE official housing company. With 8 host hotels, you’ll find a range of prices and amenities. Make your hotel reservations before January 4th for the best selection of hotels and group rates. Call 1-866-902-7405 or reserve a room online at: www.fngla.org/TPIE/accommodations.aspx. For more information, and to register for TPIE, go directly to www.tpie.org. For information on exhibit booths, contact Clay Archey (carchey@fngla.org) or Sabrina Haines (shaines@fngla.org)!

FNGLA HAPPENINGS Look Who’s Coming to FNGLA’s Floriculture Field Days Florida’s spring season is an ideal time to evaluate plants for garden performance and test their resilience to the heat and humidity of Central Florida’s climate. Who better to kick of the FNGLA’s Floriculture Field Days on May 14-15th than Joe Lamp’l or better known as Joe, the Gardener? FNGLA’s Floriculture Field Days and performance trials gardens will provide attendees with useful information in a setting that is considered one of the happiest places on earth. Whether a plant breeder, broker, greenhouse owner, student, or gardening enthusiast, the Fields Days are designed to increase awareness and strengthen the professionalism of the industry. Joe’s infatuation with gardening and nature began as a child after a run-in with his parents’ favorite shrub, he panicked and jammed the broken branch into the ground. A few weeks later, it had taken root. Joe was not only relieved; he was also hooked on horticulture. That passion will be evident as he shares the Five Most Effective Ways to Build Your Business and keep your customers. Off-camera, he is founder & CEO of The joe gardener® Company, devoted to environmentally responsible gardening and sustainable outdoor living. Why Should I Buy from You? The Five Most Effective Ways to Build Your Business and Keep Your Customers It’s a fact; people buy differences, not similarities. Expecting new results without adapting to change is a recipe for disaster. As your potential customer, offer what I need, show me how you’re different, and sell me with your service. If so, you’ll earn my loyalty for life. Some of the most impactful ways to improve results cost nothing to implement yet offer huge returns. This presentation will show you how. For more information about participating in or attending the Floriculture Field Days, contact Linda Reindl, lreindl@fngla. org, or visit http://www.fngla.org/events/floriculture-field-day/.

MEMBER NEWS The Great Southern Tree Conference Finale: A Great Success! Developed through the joint efforts of the Florida Nursery, Growers & Landscape Association (FNGLA) and the University of Florida, the Great Southern Tree Conference, over its 11 year history has been devoted entirely to tree selection, landscape, production, establishment, marketing and management issues in the southern United States. For 2013, the conference will shift gears to include more than trees. For those attending the 2012 Field Day event held November 30 in Gainesville, the day was a culmination of industry knowledge and a recap of industry developments since the conference’s development. With its hand-on approach, attendees experienced top industry professionals giving their insights, knowledge, tips and refined techniques in an effort to strengthen Florida’s tree producers and caretakers. While the 2013 conference plans are still being made, the focus will expand to include a larger scope than just trees. Be sure to be a part of this significant conference shift for 2013! INDUSTRY NEWS ANLA Recommends A New Approach For Dealing With CWR This article is provided by FNGLA and ANLA as a Lighthouse Program partner benefit In early December, ANLA, OFA and SAF submitted comments to the USDA-APHIS regarding potential changes to the regulatory status of Chrysanthemum White Rust (CWR). The disease is not endemic to North America and is currently treated, by the USDA, as a regulated quarantine pest. However, numerous localized outbreaks have occurred in the U.S. in recent years and eradication measures have been costly to growers and state and federal regulators, as well as disruptive to the market. For these reasons the USDA is considering four options: • Continue to treat CWR as a quarantine pest that must be eradicated when discovered, despite the impacts to the market and financial costs. • Deregulate the disease within the U.S. borders but prevent CWR entry into the U.S. market by regulating cuttings producers in the U.S. and abroad. • Allow individual states to determine if they would like to enforce regulatory and quarantine protocols and regularly document that the disease is not established in their state. USDA-APHIS would only prevent the importation of CWR for those states. • Completely deregulate the CWR. No regulated measures would be in place to prevent new introductions of the disease from offshore imports or prevent its spread within the U.S. ANLA, OFA, and SAF agreed that the current approach is not an efficient way to deal with this disease and places undue burden and cost on growers whose plants become infected due to no fault of their own. However, the options suggested by the USDA do not meet the needs of the industry or go far enough to protect the valuable Chrysanthemum market in the U.S. For these reasons our comments provided to the USDA detail an approach that largely embraces option 2 but also utilizes some other tools in the USDA-APHIS arsenal. The suggested approach would first confirm that countries considering importation would not be a pathway of other potentially damaging pests or diseases. In addition, cuttings producers and cut flower providers both in the U.S. and outside would have to be part of a regulated program, keeping their material free of CWR. However, the disease would be deregulated for finishing growers and for plants in the landscape, freeing this part of the market from the most burdensome and costly aspects of dealing with this pathogen. This approach would focus efforts on the part of the production process where controlling the disease is most efficient and most likely to succeed.

Former Florida Ag Commissioner, House Speaker Passes Away Doyle Conner, who was elected to the Legislature while still a college student, became the youngest House speaker in Florida history and then spent three decades (from 1961 - 1991) as state agriculture commissioner passed away on December 16. He was 83. Among his many accomplishments, Conner is known for paving the way for Florida leaders to take public office at a young age. Conner was born in 1928 in Bradford County, where his family raised cattle, grew strawberries and cut timber. He was first elected to the Florida House in 1950.
