The Industry Gains Momentum at The Landscape Show As Florida and the U.S. economies improve, the message from The Landscape Show was “Seize the Momentum!” Industry professionals did so with a stronger presence, more plants, trees and products and more enthusiasm than has been seen in recent years. “We’re thrilled to see attendance at The Landscape Show back on the upswing,” said Cindy Hall of EcoSolutions Marketing and chairwoman of the 2014 Landscape Show. “We saw an overall increase of 800 registrants over last year, with the biggest jump in the landscape category. This shows there is new work going on out there, so plants, trees, equipment and hard goods are back in demand.” Final attendance was 6,982, just shy of the 7,000 mark. It was hard not to feel the positive energy of The Landscape Show as soon as one entered the exhibit hall. The show’s Main Street was lined with matching Bismarck palms, street posts with full and flowing hanging baskets and tree boxes flush with plants. The street sign identified the area as Momentum Mile and, although it wasn’t a true mile, the impressive landscape added to the show’s momentum. At the end of Main Street was The Landscape Show Main Stage, with a dais built of pavers and wall blocks and balanced on both ends with specimen quad Phoenix Sylvester palms. Colorful shrubs and flowers mixed with the trees, pavers, mulch and landscape lighting showcased the Main Stage as an impressive model for many industry products found at The Landscape Show. Add a six-foot revolving pinwheel and whimsical landscape art and the Main Stage became not only an impressive landscape, yet also a fun one! Special thanks to SeaWorld Horticulture team for their design & implementation for the Main Street & the FNGLA Certifications Exam Showcase. Continued page 3

PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Sandy Stein FNGLA 2014-2015 President

FNGLA’s “Fresh from Florida” Partnership Connects with Our Industry’s Buying Consumers “20 years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bow line. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sail. Explore. Dream. Discover.” --Mark Twain The FNGLA is the largest state nursery and landscape association in the country and this is not by accident. Your board of directors and our amazing staff have guided us through the Great Recession by tightening our fiscal belts, by making responsible decisions in the best interests of this association and its members. Our membership numbers dropped, as did total revenues from The Landscape Show and TPIE, corresponding to the drop in discretionary consumer spending. Yet, we find ourselves as strong as ever, so strong in fact that we are carrying the FNGLA Landscape Certification Program to new heights. And now, for the first time, with the assistance of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Service’s “Fresh from Florida” program, your association has begun marketing our products to the end consumer in select regions of the country and in Florida. Early reports show these efforts are making a positive difference in sales of “Fresh from Florida” labeled plants where these programs are in place. FNGLA signed up every Florida-based FNGLA nursery, landscape firm and retail garden center member, without charge, as a “Fresh from Florida” member. “Fresh from Florida” can reimburse a portion of the cost of your promotional materials when the “Fresh from Florida” logo is used. My business is taking advantage of this offer. If your business has plans to spend money on promotional materials, you too may want to take advantage of this offer. The plant industry has historically made little effort to market itself to the end consumer. Some individual nurseries have branded themselves reasonably well and there are plant breeders whose brands are very well known to lots of gardeners. As a whole though, the challenge of marketing ourselves collectively has seemed a daunting idea, until now! Fresh from Florida’s promotion of plants has the ability to give us far greater reach than this Association could ever have imagined itself doing alone in the past.

2

If you were unaware, per capita spending in Europe on cut flowers and live plants has traditionally outpaced that of the United States multifold. There exists a different level of appreciation there by families and the individual to connecting to the beauty of nature both in and around the home. The appreciation we have as nursery growers, landscape professionals and garden center retailers for being in close proximity to this beauty has seemed difficult to instill widely to consumers. Social media and the internet in general certainly are now helping open up opportunities and are making a difference. These positive changes come as marketing and creating brands for seemingly everything is really gaining steam. FNGLA is making sure we do our part so our industry’s products are right in front of the consumer’s face in every reasonable way we can. FNGLA has traditionally led the way in representing our members through political advocacy; development and implementation of our ever-growing Certification programs; our production of educational programs; our support of scientific research; and, in putting on two of the strongest tradeshows in the country. Now, never to just rest on our laurels, we are investing time and resources to help share our industry’s appreciation for our products by promoting them to the ultimate consumer. We welcome your suggestions on how we might better promote our products to the end consumer. Contact the FNGLA office at (800) 375-3642. FNGLA HAPPENINGS Continued from page 1

The first day of The Landscape Show had a political focus, kicking off with an opening session: Election Insights from Tallahassee Insiders. Led by FNGLA’s political guru Jim Spratt, the presentation offered a look at Florida’s changing voter demographics, as well as changes to look for post-November in elected and appointed positions of government leadership. The afternoon featured the Ag Institute of Florida/Farm Credit Ag Candidates Forum in which candidates for Florida’s four Cabinet positions shared their platforms with 250 agriculture and business leaders. Among the candidates participating were Governor Rick Scott, Attorney General Pam Bondi and Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam, each of whom spent time visiting FNGLA members before or after the forum. The first day ended with the Opening Day Reception at The Landscape Show’s new headquarters hotel -- the Hilton Orlando. Nearly 700 people mixed and mingled over drinks and appetizers, while enjoying the view of the Hilton’s Outdoor Pavilion. Special musical entertainment was provided by FNGLA member Justin Williams (Williams Plant Nursery, Jacksonville). The Landscape Show’s newest networking event was Tapped In -- a fun reception for industry professionals 40 years of age or younger. Taking place at BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse, Tapped In brought 60 young professionals together to meet, learn from, and share with one another. Educational opportunities abounded at The Landscape Show. The new workshop format of The Knowledge College was a hit as over 350 industry professionals attended one or more of the five workshops. This year’s sessions offered hands-on training from international and local experts. They covered industry specialties of landscape design, pest management, landscape equipment efficiencies and management, as well as a workshop for garden center professionals. Special thanks to all of the 2014 presenters and participating companies. Along with our sponsors, Disney’s Horticulture team and Ameriscapes Landscape Management Services provided time and resources to make the 2014 Knowledge College a very successful event. A new educational component at The Landscape Show was the FNGLA Certification Exam Showcase. Under the direction of FNGLA Certification Chairman Gary Weitermann, FCLMT (Sea World Horticulture, Orlando), this team created a show floor area to give potential certification exam candidates a chance to “test out” four of the landscape certification exam’s test stations. On hand in this area were certification judges and mentors who offered tips about taking the exam and outlined the benefits of becoming an FNGLA certified professional. FNGLA’s Landscape Awards Program winners took center stage as this year’s winners were presented their awards. Brownwood Town Center, Phase One, of the Villages was the recipient of the Roy Rood Award, the program’s most prestigious award. Down to Earth, Inc. of Tangerine, FL was recognized as the landscape contractor for this project and Michael Pape & Associates, PA, Ocala, FL was recognized as the landscape architect firm responsible for the design. Brownwood Town Center was also recognized with FNGLA’s Florida Friendly Landscape Award. All of the 2014 award winners are featured on FNGLA’s website. Another group of award winners at The Landscape Show were this year’s booth award winners. Winning best of show was Triple O Nursery in Homestead. A total of 17 booth awards were presented with two awards recognizing unique plants. Sunscape Landscape Nursery in Tampa received the award for most unusual show specimen for a Double Canary Island Date Palm. Agri-Starts, Inc. was recognized by the judges for the Pineapple ‘Sweet Stripes’ plant. FNGLA HAPPENINGS 10 Great Reasons To Exhibit at TPIE!

The Tropical Plant Industry Exhibition (TPIE) will open in less than four months – January 21-23, 2015 in the Broward County Convention Center in sunny Fort Lauderdale, FL. This year the TPIE show will continue the INSPIRE through new ideas, INNOVATE with new products and the place to CREATE new partnerships. Here’s 10 great reasons to exhibit at TPIE this coming January: 1. Buyers, Buyers, Buyers! TPIE is one of the most cost-effective ways to gain exposure for your plants and products and get them sold to independent garden center buyers, big box buyers, interiorscapers, wholesale brokers, floral designers, retail florists and landscape professionals! Did you know TPIE attendees come from all 50 states and over 50 different countries? Where else can you catch the attention of so many great current or potential business leads? 2. Book Orders! Time after time, research has shown trade show sales leads are easier to close. As much as trade shows have changed in the last 10-20 years, orders are still placed at shows for those who are prepared and ready to book and make commerce happen on the floor! 3. New Prospects. New prospects, new contacts, and new ventures: FNGLA’s efforts bring over 6,000 industry professionals to the show floor. These folks are looking to connect with business to serve their clients! 4. Gain a Competitive Edge. Trade shows offer your company the opportunity to understand the industry — and to stand out. Come to TPIE to see or set the trends that are occurring in the green industry. Creativity and innovation are always on display at TPIE. Start the year out right with fresh ideas to kick your business in gear! 5. Networking. Gain quality “face-time” with prospective and current customers. Never second-guess the power of a handshake and a smile to create the next business deal. How do you know the next light bulb going off in your head is the solution for next year’s buying “must haves?” 6. Create New Partnerships & Build Relationships. Invite your preferred customers to the trade show, treat them to a one-on-one dinner and solidify contracts. Who’s that knocking on your customer’s door you ask? It’s your competition waiting for you to relax your service or price monitoring just one little bit. Make sure if your customer is walking the TPIE floor, you are there to show them your latest offerings and how you are involved and part of the action. 7. Leverage On-Site Opportunities. It’s always easier to sell your work when it’s right in front of your Customers. Buyers are at TPIE to be Inspired by new ideas. Show them they’ve already done business with the best and they’ll keep coming back. Stand out even more by

FNGLA HAPPENINGS investing in our sponsor opportunities: http://www.fngla.org/TPIE/sponsorships.aspx. They’ll notice for certain! 8. Study your Competition. See the latest offerings, pricing and marketing strategies of your competitors. Some of the biggest players in the industry release their new products at TPIE. While at the show, you can gauge what the competition is doing in product line, pricing, customer service. It’s a great time for you to research and find what you do the best and focus your efforts. You just never know what bits of information will help you excel! 9. Be Seen By the Media. Trade shows attract lots of media attention; use it to your advantage and gain exposure. With the major industry news agencies in booths themselves and attending the show, your chance to land coverage or be deemed the next hot item for the year is closer than you probably think. It’s going to be hard to get their attention if you are just walking the aisles. Attract them to your booth and let the magic happen! 10. Hear Buyer Feedback. The show is a great time to solicit from prospective buyers what changes to your products would make them buy. Little packaging changes or product alterations may make the difference in your next order being modest or huge. You won’t know these details if you don’t get into a booth and start gaining feedback from key potential customers. Visit www.tpie.org for more info on the show! To reserve your spot at the 2015 TPIE show in Ft. Lauderdale, January 21- 23, contact FNGLA’s Billy Deal at bdeal@fngla.org or call FNGLA at 800-375-3642! We’d love to see you participate!

INDUSTRY NEWS Rugose Spiraling White Fly Subsiding Across Florida Last year, whitefly populations coated many of Florida’s tropicals causing a sticky black coating on the underneath of plant leaves. But now, much of the evidence of its presence has ceased, meaning the outbreak has subsided. Because insect populations cycle over the years, some species have prominent periods of high activity, and then their numbers decline when another insect, disease or poor weather does them in. According to Catharine Mannion, Ph.D., UF/ IFAS Homestead Research and Education Center, the whitefly was “done in” primarily by a small wasp, encarsia noyesi, sometimes referred to as micro wasps. They’re so tiny, in fact, three of them can fit on the head of a pin, so there’s no risk to of being stung. Determining where the wasps have been active can be done by examining the nymphs on leaves. The presence of small holes where the adult micro wasps have emerged after its fed on the whitefly can be seen. A list of white fly host plants can be found at http://monroe.ifas.ufl.edu/pdf/Hort/RSW_Host_Plants_ May_2012.pdf .

Parasitic wasps, encarcia noyesi is responsible for the decline in population of White Fly according to Dr. Catherine Mannion, UF/IFAS Research and Education Center, Homestead.

To best protect your plants and the beneficial wasps, determine if the white fly is present and if treatment is the best option. More and more, there is less need to treat for White Fly. Mother Nature handled the brunt of the work, as most evidence of white fly ceases to exist allowing the industry and research efforts to focus attention on other pending pest issues. A ficus shows a White Fly infestation about May 2013 and a recent image, August 2014 shows a healthy ficus. Some species have prominent peaks or outbreak periods and then their numbers decline while another insect or disease or poor weather does them in, such as in the case of White Fly and the Micro Wasp.
