PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Mike Marshall FNGLA 2013-2014 President

It’s Time for The Landscape Show! I can’t believe it’s already time for The Landscape Show. Didn’t last year’s show just happen a couple of months ago? Maybe it’s just after so many years they all start to run together in my memory (except for the surreal year we all went home before we even set up thanks to the scare of Hurricane Floyd). This year, however, The Landscape Show will stand out for me in several important ways. First, and don’t forget this, this year’s show has moved to the newer North/South Building of the Orange County Convention Center. It is on Universal Boulevard behind the Peabody Hotel, not in front of it. Secondly, as FNGLA President, I have many “official” duties with which I have the privilege of helping at this year’s show. This change in scenery, and change in my trade show routine, has shaken me out of my “they all run together” thinking and helped me reflect on The Landscape Show and the unique opportunity it is for our industry. A common refrain among industry members and trade show attendees these days is “Trade Shows just are not the same as they used to be; what do you think the future holds for shows?” My standard answer is the way we buy and sell has changed dramatically over the last 20 years, mostly due to technology. Yet, trade shows give us the real opportunity to visit with customers, suppliers and industry friends in a way technology can never replace. This networking of exhibitors and buyers must happen for any show to be successful as this interaction really is the backbone of any trade show. In addition to the irreplaceable time with customers and colleagues, there are many other opportunities and essential events happening at The Landscape Show (TLS) that provide for a healthy and thriving landscape & nursery industry. TLS is a unique opportunity as new plants, designs, ideas and technology are introduced and unveiled to our industry. It is a time for recognition of the 2

industry’s best in landscape and nursery practitioners with the Landscape Awards. Hundreds of professionals will learn the latest and greatest from the best and the brightest at The Knowledge College and other educational programs on the show floor. Networking opportunities abound at the Landscape Show Reception, Tapped-In Reception (for the under 40, up and comers), the Wedgworth Alumni Reception, the FNGLA-PAC meeting, and much more. The scope of the show reaches across state lines as FNGLA is partnering with America in Bloom to highlight our industry and its importance in both beautifying and making our communities healthier and greener places to live. And, what better time and place to showcase our industry as we proudly host Florida’s Commissioner of Agriculture, Adam Putnam, and welcome visiting mayors from across the state and country with America in Bloom. The way all of these components of a successful trade show and nursery/landscape industry marketplace come together is exceptional. It is what makes The Landscape Show special. Really, we have all experienced this… we just have to think back to the first time we attended and were awed at an industry event of this size and magnitude. I still get that feeling each year on the first day of the show. To see the size and scope of our industry and the vast diversity of plant material, big and small, foliage to trees, liners to finished crops, one inch to forty feet in height is always inspiring. I know the Green Industry has changed dramatically in the way we buy and sell in the last 20 years. I also know there is something special about coming together each year as an industry to buy, sell, learn, network and celebrate what makes our industry great. See you at The Landscape Show! FNGLA HAPPENINGS The One Name Campaign! Aims to Bring New Members to FNGLA’s Membership Roster FNGLA is a multi-faceted organization whose efforts benefit many businesses in Florida’s nursery and landscape industry. The Association officially added an “L” to represent “landscape” in its name nearly a decade ago. Since then, FNGLA has adopted many changes and tackled many issues representing and protecting Florida’s nursery and landscape industry: FNATS rebranded itself and changed its name to The Landscape Show; FNGLA partnered with the Landscape Management Network and RingPower on business education for landscape professionals, The Knowledge College’s training breakouts include sessions specific for landscape pros, and, most recently, The Great Southern Tree Conference has become Great Southern Landscape Field Days. In August, FNGLA officially launched “ The One Name Campaign!” We’re asking each FNGLA member to provide the name and contact details for just one business who will benefit from FNGLA’s membership, ideally a landscape firm. Once their “one name” has joined, the member who submitted the “one name” will be rewarded with a $50 credit towards any state-level FNGLA educational event! Submitting your “one name” is easy! Go to FNGLA’s home page at www.fngla.org and look for the “Refer a Member” button on the top left. From here, there’s a simple online submission form. Then, simply follow-up with your recommendation and help orient them to the many programs and benefits which will most benefit their business. It’s really that easy! Who has referred members? You’ll find FNGLA members who’ve taken the time to submit at least one person’s name for recruitment listed each month in the Greenline. Thank you to the following members for jumping onboard the campaign: Tristen Bowen, Marriott Vacation Club; Rich Kling, Integrity Merchant Solutions; Vickie Parrish, Parrish Nursery, Inc.; Lourdes Rodriguez, Manuel Diaz Farms, Inc.; Friedel Scholl, Soho Landscape; and, Sandy Stein, The Jungle Nursery, Inc. For more details on FNGLA’s recruitment efforts, call FNGLA at 800-375-3642 or e-mail: info@fngla.org.

FNGLA Welcomes New Staff Member: Mike Summers Mike Summers is the new addition to the FNGLA team, filling the slot left vacant by Clay Archey’s departure a few months ago. Mike is FNGLA’s Director of Association Services. Given his successful experience in sales and business development, Mike’s responsibility is to manage the relationships with FNGLA members, exhibitors and advertisers. Mike is a people person, yet also a numbers guy. He asks lots of excellent strategic questions to understand how best to set up solutions and showcase value. His background is in the technology industry, yet he is not a tech engineer or programmer. He did tech sales and very successfully, in fact, his most recent employer was IBM. Mike will be selling FNGLA trade show booths, educational event/conference sponsorships and memberships. After The Landscape Show, Mike will be getting out around the state as FNGLA’s field representative, regularly calling on FNGLA members and non-members – hopefully with some of you in tow! Mike is a graduate of Northern Michigan University with a B.S. in Marketing. He is an avid Green Bay Packer fan and enjoys organic cooking. We hope you will welcome Mike to your FNGLA team!

FNGLA NEWS FNGLA Connects with Garden Writers at Symposium: Quebec City Attracting nearly 300 garden writers from across North America, the annual Garden Writers Symposium took place August 16 - 20 in Quebec City, Canada touting the area’s French culture, a great line-up of topics and speakers and, most importantly to FNGLA, a great chance to interact with top writers. A typical GWA symposium lasts three full days and is bookended with story tours, special interest seminars, and photography side trips. The GWA is comprised of garden professionals including book authors, staff editors, syndicated columnists, freelance writers, photographers, landscape designers, television and radio personalities, consultants, catalog publishers, and others interested in advancing communications about horticulture, gardening, plants and the environment. FNGLA members Nancy McDonald (N.G.M. Productions, Mt. Dora) and Sylvia Gordon (Landscape by Sylvia Gordon, Miami) attended as FNGLA’s delegates touting the message of “Florida plants.” Armed with personality plus and distributing copies of Tom MacCubbin’s book Month by Month Gardening in Florida, the mission was to connect and promote Florida’s plants and products. Garden Writers have more contact with the buying public than virtually any other industry group and are a viewed as local gardening authorities to garden enthusiasts and the general consumer. Participating in their annual conference provides great “bang for the buck” and gives the writers a great Florida connection to FNGLA. Next year’s symposium will travel to Pittsburgh, PA, presumably in August. FNGLA has established a subcommittee to explore the option of bringing the national conference to South Florida as early as 2017. FNGLA served as the host organization for the GWA Symposium in 2001 with Orlando as the host city. For more details on FNGLA’s involvement with the Garden Writers, contact FNGLA’s Jennifer Nelis at jnelis@fngla.org or call FNGLA, 800-375-3642.

FNGLA Merges Membership & Marketing Committees Reflecting the relationship between membership and marketing, FNGLA has fused two committees into one, forming a super committee, dubbed the ‘M&M’ Committee, whose talents will produce creative and effective resources for FNGLA to grow membership and showcase not only Florida’s products and services, but also the industry’s economic impact. Committee members are: Deb Joneck (chair); Matt Antos, Sandy Benton, Jeff Boyle, Rick Brown, Sylvia Gordon, Melissa Hunt, Vickie Parrish, and Will Womack. Also pictured are meeting guests Jackie Moalli (FDACS), Mike Marshall (FNGLA President), Wes Parrish (FNGLA Past President), and FNGLA staff members Ben Bolusky and Mike Summers.

INDUSTRY NEWS ANLA & OFA Hold Vote on Organizational Merger The American Nursery and Landscape Association (ANLA) and OFA - The Association of Horticulture Professionals, recently mailed ballots for a member vote on the consolidation of the two organizations. Ballots were distributed to all eligible members as defined by each organization’s bylaws. OFA will hold an additional, in-person vote on Saturday, September 28, in Columbus, OH. The results of the combined OFA votes and the ANLA ballot count will be announced following the completion of the in-person vote. The ballot question follows the final approval of the consolidation voted upon by the boards of OFA and ANLA at their meetings in July. According to ANLA President Bob Terry, owner of Fischer Farms in Oregon, “Both boards hired legal and other expert counsel to review the consolidation of our two organizations. As leaders, we have spoken with our members and they truly believe that a new trade association, with the combined resources, membership, and staff of ANLA and OFA will best serve the future success of our industry.” If approved by the members, a new organization will be formed to represent the whole of the plant industry, including breeders, greenhouse and nursery growers, garden center retailers, distributors, interior and exterior landscape professionals, florists, students, educators, researchers, manufacturers, and all of those who are part of the industry supply chain. OFA President Mark Foertmeyer, owner of Foertmeyer & Sons Greenhouse in Ohio, said, “More than two years ago, we asked the question ‘should we work together?’ and the answer was ‘yes.’ The success of our partnership led us to say, ‘dating has worked well, how about getting married?’ The time has come to walk down the aisle together.” OFA Past President Bobby Barnitz added, “This decision is right for our industry, it is right for our members, and it is right for my business. I encourage OFA’s members to vote ‘yes’ on the consolidation.” For more information about the proposed new horticulture industry trade association visit www.onevoiceoneindustry.com. ANLA, a Washington, DC-based trade association, represents green industry business professionals seeking market leadership through advocacy with our nation’s government, a community of industry innovators and experts, and unique, profitability-focused programming, products and services. Through the Lighthouse Program, a partnership with green industry state and regional associations, ANLA represents more than 22,000 businesses before Congress and to the White House. OFA – The Association of Horticulture Professionals is the leading horticulture educational association in the United States. It is a non-profit, all-industry, educational organization and its core purpose/mission is “to support and advance professional horticulture.” Industry segments served include garden centers, greenhouses, nurseries, retail and wholesale florists, and interior plantscapers.

INDUSTRY NEWS New Pesticide Labels Will Better Protect Bees and Other Pollinators

SNA Awards Include Florida Connections

In an ongoing effort to protect bees and other pollinators, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has developed new pesticide labels that prohibit use of some neonicotinoid pesticide products where bees are present.

The 2013 SNA Awards were presented at the SNA Annual Business Meeting held in conjunction with the recently reemerged SNA Show held August 5 - 7 at the Georgia International Convention Center in Atlanta.

“Multiple factors play a role in bee colony declines, including pesticides. The Environmental Protection Agency is taking action to protect bees from pesticide exposure and these label changes will further our efforts,” said Jim Jones, assistant administrator for the Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention.

SNA Pinnacle Award: Gary L. Stover , Stover Manufacturing, Port Orange, FL

The new labels will have a bee advisory box and icon with information on routes of exposure and spray drift precautions. The recent change affects products containing the neonicotinoids imidacloprid, dinotefuran, clothianidin and thiamethoxam. The EPA will work with pesticide manufacturers to change labels so that they will meet the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) safety standard. In May, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and EPA released a comprehensive scientific report on honey bee health, showing scientific consensus that there are a complex set of stressors associated with honey bee declines, including loss of habitat, parasites and disease, genetics, poor nutrition and pesticide exposure. The agency continues to work with beekeepers, growers, pesticide applicators, pesticide and seed companies, and federal and state agencies to reduce pesticide drift dust and advance best management practices. The EPA recently released new enforcement guidance to federal, state and tribal enforcement officials to enhance investigations of beekill incidents. MEMBER NEWS Beshears Named as a WLI Award Winner FNGLA Past President & State Representative Halsey Beshears (Simpson Nursery, Monticello) was recently honored at the annual Wedgworth Leadership Institute (WLI) Alumni Association meeting as the recipient of its Dr. Burl Long Award. This award recognizes an individual who is connected to the Wedgworth Leadership Program and reflects the ideals that WLI program advisor Dr. Long embodied and shared with participants of the program. This includes Dr. Long’s reminder that “speech without reflection is just chatter,” and encouraged his students to develop a thought process of thinking more deeply before speaking or acting. Those who nominated Halsey Beshears remarked they have heard Halsey say in public if it hadn’t be for his participation in WLI and what he learned as a class member, he would have never run for public office. Halsey’s public speeches as a political candidate and an industry leader are indicative of thoughtful reflection and action based on his core values. The WLI Alumni Association has more than 400 members is made up of students and spouses from eight WLI classes and represents of all segments of Florida Agriculture.

Former FNGLA Pinellas Chapter President, Charles also served on FNGLA’s Certification Committee and was editor and test writer for the new edition of the FNGLA Certified Horticulture Professional (FCHP) manual. He received FNGLA’s Educator of the Year award in 2002 and was presented with Florida FFA’s highest recognition – the Honorary FFA Degree – in 2010. He served as a mentor to many aspiring horticulture instructors across the state. Known as Dr. Hort to his loyal followers in Pinellas County, Charles shared his vast knowledge of plants with consumers, students, educators and professionals, cultivating the next generation of industry professionals. He will always be remembered for his opencollar medical scrub shirts sewn for him by wife Leslie Waters, with designs that represented holidays or the subjects of his lectures.
