Seize the Momentum at The Landscape Show Momentum is building at The Landscape Show! FNGLA’s signature business event for Florida’s $15.32 billion nursery and landscape, The Landscape Show takes place September 25-27 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando.

Bringing 6,500 industry professionals together to do business, learn from one another and enhance industry professionalism, this year’s event is especially significant as Florida’s economic recovery takes off, supplies are needed and new people have joined the industry. The Landscape Show offers the momentum for business success today and the years ahead.

The location for this year’s event has changed! The show takes place in the South concourse of the North/South building of the convention center, facing International Drive. The Hilton Orlando serves as the new headquarters hotel for The Landscape show, with a walkway from the hotel to the convention center. The Hilton is the location of the Opening Reception on Thursday evening.

It’s an election year and political insights abound at The Landscape Show. Industry professionals can take advantage of the complimentary Opening Session on Thursday, Sept. 25 at 9 a.m. We will provide Election Year Insights from Tallahassee political insiders Jim Spratt, Screven Watson and David Johnson, each a well-known person of influence within political circles.

The Farm Credit/Ag Institute Candidates’ Forum also takes center stage at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday as gubernatorial and the other Florida Cabinet candidates present their platforms on agriculture. The audience will include individuals from all facets of Florida’s agriculture community. This is a luncheon and ticketed event. Local and international experts share valuable techniques and know-how related to landscape design, landscape operation efficiencies, nursery production, pest management, and garden center operations. In addition, on-going exhibitor presentations take place at the show’s Solutions Center and feature industry hot-topics, issues and trends.

Arrive a day before the show opens on Wednesday, September 24 to take in a pre-show workshop or nursery production tour via The Knowledge College. Wednesday is also the day to play in The Landscape Show/ Continued page 3

Its name was changed some years ago to more accurately reflect the primary industry segment it intends to serve. Landscape designers, architects and contractors from Florida and beyond come to see the current tree, shrub and groundcover offerings from nurseries.

Yet, far beyond plants, The Landscape Show has vendor displays of equipment and hardscape supplies, like pavers and stone, and an array of services every landscape company (and garden center) can use to grow their business and improve their professional standing. The show is also jam-packed with educational opportunities such as The Knowledge College workshops. We also learn which landscape projects are Florida’s “best of the best” during the highly anticipated presentation of the FNGLA Landscape Award Winners.

SHARE Golf Tournament. This popular golf tournament takes place at the Marriott Grande Pines Resort located a short distance from the Orange County Convention Center. Proceeds from the tournament are contributed to the FNGLA Endowed Research Fund at the UF Foundation/SHARE. Professional momentum flows through The Landscape Show as a place to earn CEUs for several industry certifications and licenses, including FNGLA’s horticulture and landscape certification designations. New to The Landscape Show is FNGLA’s Landscape Certification Exam Showcase.

Located inside the exhibit hall, this special area features demonstrations of some of the exam stations: Plant ID, Irrigation, Plan Layout and Grading and Drainage. Certification mentors and exam judges will be there to provide details about the exam and share the benefits of becoming and hiring FNGLA certified professionals.

FNGLA’s Landscape Award winners are recognized on Friday, September 26 at 3 p.m. on the Main Stage of The Landscape Show. Young people are encouraged to consider the nursery and landscape industry as a profession during the FNGLA Career Fair which takes place Friday morning. An estimated 350 high school students from around the state are expected to attend.

INDUSTRY NEWS FNGLA/FDOT Information Exchange at The Landscape Show If you have a business interest in the Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) landscaping program, then be sure to attend a special meeting at 8:30-10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 26 in the South Concourse: Room 210D at The Landscape Show in Orlando.

FDOT is likely the largest purchaser of Florida trees, plants, and landscape installation and maintenance services in our state!

Florida Water StarSM Hosted at FIS Water Summit then Travels to Palm Coast The Florida Irrigation Society (FIS) recently welcomed Florida Water StarSM training and testing to its annual Water Summit in Orlando.

Industry professionals as well as government employees took part in this comprehensive water conservation program which focuses on Florida-friendly landscapeTM alternatives and irrigation requirements that can have a major impact on water usage.

On October 28, the City of Palm Coast will host FNGLA and the St. Johns River Water Management District to bring this program to northeast Florida. The cost is just $25 and will include lunch, thanks to Hunter.

The Florida Water StarSM Program was developed by the St. Johns River Water Management District in 2006 and became a statewide program in 2012. Florida Water StarSM can be effectively integrated into projects along with other programs such as ENERGY STAR®, the Florida Green Building Coalition’s (FGBC) green standards, and the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) LEED program.

INDUSTRY NEWS National Study Pinpoints Benefits of Trees First national study finds trees saving lives, reducing respiratory problems: Air pollution modeling reveals broad-scale impacts of pollution removal by trees In the first broad-scale estimate of air pollution removal by trees nationwide, U.S. Forest Service scientists and collaborators calculated that trees are saving more than 850 human lives a year and preventing 670,000 incidences of acute respiratory symptoms.

While trees’ pollution removal equated to an average air quality improvement of less than 1 percent, the impacts of that improvement are substantial. Researchers valued the human health effects of the reduced air pollution at nearly $7 billion every year in a study published recently in the journal Environmental Pollution. “Tree and Forest Effects on Air Quality and Human Health in the United States,” is available online at: http://www.nrs.fs.fed.us/pubs/46102 The study by the U.S. Forest Service’s Northern Research Station the Davey Institute is unique in that it directly links the removal of air pollution with improved human health effects and associated health values. The scientists found that pollution removal is substantially higher in rural areas than urban areas, however the effects on human health are substantially greater in urban areas than rural areas.

“With more than 80 percent of Americans living in urban area, this research underscores how truly essential urban forests are to people across the nation,” said Michael T. Rains, Director of the Forest Service’s Northern Research Station and the Forest Products Laboratory. “Information and tools developed by Forest Service research are contributing to communities valuing and managing the 138 million acres of trees and forests that grace the nation’s cities, towns and communities.”

“In terms of impacts on human health, trees in urban areas are substantially more important than rural trees due to their proximity to people,” Nowak said. “We found that in general, the greater the tree cover, the greater the pollution removal, and the greater the removal and population density, the greater the value of human health benefits,” said Dave Nowak of the U.S. Forest Service’s Northern Research Station.

INDUSTRY NEWS National Indoor Plant Week: September 15 - 19!

National Indoor Plant Week was established to increase public awareness of the importance of indoor plants and their many attributes. Some of which include cleaning the air we breathe...many like to say, “The oxygen doesn’t arrive until the plants arrive.”

Statistics have proven that indoor plants increase morale in the workplace and homes. Real life office studies have measured the direct relationship between clinical health, complaints and plant installations. Recorded health improvements in offices where interior plants were added were significant. Results show a large reduction among employees in the areas of fatigue, headache, coughs and their overall well-being rose dramatically. Further, numerous studies have shown that plants have a positive psychological impact on people. According to a recent study, employees exposed to interior plant settings demonstrated better attitudes, positive emotions such as happiness, friendliness and assertiveness. The Society of American Florists Honors UF Professor Over the last decade, gardening enthusiasts have become enchanted by an increasing variety of coleus available on the market, and for the bounty of gorgeous colors, compact shapes and unexpected patterns. Behind the scenes working on advancing the science is David Clark, Ph.D. A professor with the University of Florida’s Department of Environmental Horticulture, Clark was named the 2014 recipient of the Society of American Florists’ Gold Medal Award.

The award honors the originator or introducer of a widely distributed plant or flower that has become established as an outstanding product of significant horticultural and commercial value.

The award was presented in Marco Island during SAF’s 130th Annual Convention. Clark is the driving force behind ground-breaking research “improving the quality, color and variety of coleus and for generating consumer enthusiasm for the plant.”

Clark is widely known and respected for his innovative work in both basic and applied plant science, and for his ability to take new technologies to the consumer marketplace. Since starting his work with coleus 11 years ago, Clark has nearly eliminated early flowering and introduced new colors, color combinations and leaf shapes. In addition, he’s made varieties more tolerant of heat, drought and sun exposure.

Because of Clark’s work, UF has patented 19 cultivars, trademarked nine cultivars and released 49 cultivars to the commercial floriculture industry, and cultivars bred in this program are now sold in the U.S., Canada, Europe and Japan. So far, 13 of the cultivars he developed have sold 500,000 cuttings or more in the U.S. Many of the cultivars have been recognized as “Best in Show” at university bedding plant trials and both trade and consumer publications have heralded Clark’s work, including Greenhouse Grower, Better Homes and Gardens and Southern Living.

Clark has been with UF since 1995. There, he established the Floriculture Biotechnology and Genetics laboratory in the Environmental Horticulture Department. His research group conducts experiments focused on developing flowers and plants that have maximum sensory appeal to humans. He has been instrumental in identifying the gene responsible for fragrance in flowers. Clark also founded the UF Institute for Plant Innovation, a multidisciplinary group that has established the concept of using “Consumer Assisted Selection” for developing new plants for future consumers. CERTIFICATIONS FNGLA Landscape Certification Kicks Off Fall at SeaWorld FNGLA began its fall landscape certification exam schedule at SeaWorld Horticulture, hosting FNGLA’s Certified Landscape Technician (FCLT) exam on August 9 and Landscape Maintenance Technician (FCLMT) exam on August 23.

This test site in Orlando continues to be a favorite of landscape professionals across the state, attracting exam applicants and Certified Judges from as far away as Panama City Beach, Ft. Myers, Homestead and Nassau, Bahamas. 20 new FCLTs and FCLMTs were added to the ever expanding list of certified professionals.

The fall schedule continues in October with FNGLAs Broward Chapter hosting its second bilingual FCLT exam at the UF Ft. Lauderdale Research Center on Friday, October 17. A special day-long training takes place Friday, October 3.

Pinellas Technical College in St. Petersburg will host its first FCLMT in many years on Saturday, October 25. A short course begins September 16 to prepare applicants for this exam. For more information, contact Merry Mott at FNGLA at mmott@ fngla.org.

INDUSTRY NEWS BMPs Revised and Expanded for all Production Nurseries The newly revised nursery Best Management Practices Manual is now available!

This statewide Best Management Practices (BMP) manual for the nursery industry expands on the 2007 Container Nursery manual. And, for the first time, extends BMPs to in-ground, field-grown, greenhouse and cut foliage production operations.

While BMPs have been in place in Florida for many years, their role in environmental protection was formally established in 1999 with the passage of the Florida Watershed Restoration Act. This law provides the framework for implementing Florida’s View the 3 1/2 minute “Should You Use BMPs” Video at: Total Maximum Daily Load program which sets http://www.fngla.org/resources/bmp water quality targets for impaired waters. Nurseries have proven to be leaders in water conservation and water management. These BMPs address water quality and quantity impacts and helps Florida nursery growers operate efficiently.

There are specific requirements for container nurseries enrolled under the previous nursery Florida Department of Agriculture BMP programs. Be sure to send in your Response Sheet to FDACS as soon as possible so FDACS can update your Notice of Intent to implement the BMPs. This will ensure you can continue to receive presumptions of compliance and waivers of liability offered by state law!

With the nursery BMPs finally extended to in-ground field growers for the first time, you too can now receive the same protections and benefits as container growers. Long time in coming! So, submit your Notice of Intent to FDACS!

Grant Monies Available for Florida Teachers October 1 is the deadline for applications for Florida Agriculture in the Classroom, Inc.’s Teacher Grants and School Garden Mini Grants grant program. Florida pre-kindergarten through 12th grade teachers and agri-science teachers who are seeking funds to start or maintain a school garden, launch an embryology project to educate students about the life cycle of chickens, establish a classroom farm on paper to teach economics or simiar projects are encouraged to apply. The funds are available to all schools meeting the requirements within the state, including private, charter or public institutions.

The requirements are simple: The grant applicant must be a certified Florida teacher who plans to use the funds to educate students about language arts, history, science, social studies, math or other subject areas. Applications for FAITC Teacher Grants are available online at: http://faitc.org/grants/gardening-for-grades-mini-school-garden-grant. The first 40 complete applications will be considered. INDUSTRY NEWS SNA Recognizes Florida Industry Members SNA recognizes distinguished talents, extraordinary service and life achievements among its membership each August in connection with its annual tradeshow and research conference. Six awards are given, this year, three are to Florida folks:

Dr. Tom Yeager, Warren Lockeby, University of Florida, Gainesville Nursery Supplies, Inc., Orlando

Ty Strode, Agri-Starts, Inc., Apopka

Awarded for significant contributions to the advancement of the industry in the South and to the welfare of the industry at large, this award was named the Slater Wight Memorial Award in memory of the late J. Slater Wight. The 2014 recipient is Dr. Tom Yeager, Professor of Environmental Horticulture at the University of Florida. Tom was instrumental in the development of a Best Management Practices (BMP) Guide for container nursery crops. Several universities, governmental agencies, and the nursery industry worked cooperatively to write the BMP Guide, printed by the Southern Nursery Association. This guide was just recently revised and has become available to the industry.

The SNA Pinnacle Award was established in 1992. This award is given to an individual within the allied industry for their contribution to its advancement. This year’s recipient of the SNA Pinnacle Award is Warren Lockeby, Regional Sales Manager, Nursery Supplies, Orlando, Florida. Warren’s green industry days began with The Lerio Corporation in 1981 until it merged with Nursery Supplies in 2000. He has been with Nursery Supplies for a total of 33 years. He has been active in the green industry by serving on the FNGLA Board of Directors, on The Landscape Show Planning Committee (when the show was still called FNATS), has been very involved in many FNGLA golf tournaments, and other great contributions through his volunteer work and leadership.

Presented each year to recognize qualified individuals for outstanding service in the field of environmental horticulture and to offer inspiration for others starting out in the field, the recipient of the Laird Award must be 39 years of age or younger and must be a member of his/her state nursery association. This year’s recipient of the David E. Laird, Sr. Memorial Award is Ty Strode, Vice President and Director of Marketing, Agri-Starts, Apopka, Florida. The nursery industry runs in Ty Strode’s veins. Randy Strode, Ty’s father, started Agri-Starts, a successful tissue culture laboratory, when Ty was a small child. He has served on the FNGLA marketing committee and budget committee. In 2012 and 2013, he served as chairperson of The Landscape Show planning committee.Ty is known nationally as an industry leader in edibles. He developed an industry cross-over mix of edibles that work well for wholesale growers and the farming community.

Taking the reigns as the 2014/15 SNA President is Florida’s very own Richard May, Production & Sales Manager at May Nursery, Quincy. Richard’s family is steeped in FNGLA & SNA leadership and volunteerism. Best of luck Richard!

“Agriculture Keeps Florida Green”

MEMBER NEWS AFE Appoints New Research Coordinator The American Floral Endowment (AFE) has appointed Terril A. Nell, Ph.D., as its new research coordinator to oversee the Endowment’s research funding and provide counsel to industry researchers.

Nell is professor emeritus in floriculture at the University of Florida (UF) and developed the UF postharvest program in 1983, which he credits AFE funding for making possible.

“AFE-supported research has directly benefited the floral industry over the past 53 years,” Nell said.

“I share the organization’s quest to provide better scientific information to growers, wholesalers and retailers, and I look forward to working with this organization’s board to advance its goals in the future.”

Nell was appointed following the retirement of Gus De Hertogh, Ph.D., AFE research coordinator for the past 15 years.

Nell served as chair of the UF Environmental Horticulture Department from 1991-2012 and was a floriculture professor from 1977-2012. His research program concentrated on the production and postharvest handling of flowering potted plants and fresh cut flowers, the results of which have led to improved flower and plant longevity. A highly respected care and handling expert, Nell co-authored the Flower and Plant Care Manual produced by the Society of American Florists (SAF).

He was the first academic president of SAF from 2003-2005 and was inducted into the American Academy of Floriculture, the Florida State Florists’ Association Hall of Fame in 2005, the Florida Nursery, Growers and Landscape Association Hall of Fame in 2011 and more. He is a member of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Specialty Crop Committee and a board member of the National Foliage Foundation.

For the past 25 years, he has served as a domestic and international industry consultant for growers, wholesalers and retailers.

Upon his retirement from UF in 2011, Nell and his wife, Cathy, moved to Brevard, NC. The American Floral Endowment is dedicated to advancing the industry through funding floriculture research, educational grants and scholarships. More than $15 million has been funded toward research projects benefiting the entire industry, and more than $500,000 has been funded in scholarships designed to attract and retain the future leaders of the industry.
