FNGLA’S ANNUAL CONVENTION Celebrate being an FNGLA member and Father’s Day on the same week end by attending FNGLA’s Annual Convention. Scheduled June 16-18 at the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort in Orlando, FNGLA’s Annual Convention highlights the past year of FNGLA leadership and accomplishments and sets the stage for the new association year as leaders are elected and visions and goals set. It’s also a time to learn and have fun together as an industry through horticulture tours, networking receptions and relaxed down time. FNGLA’s 2016 Annual Convention begins with a landscape service project at one of the Central Florida Boys and Girls Club campuses. Taking place Thursday afternoon, June 15, members will bring shade to a playground with donated trees, shrubs and labor. More optional activities are available on Friday, June 16 including an exclusive tour of Harry P. Leu Gardens and a backstage tour of Sea World’s horticulture facilities. The convention officially starts with a splash on Friday evening at the Welcome Reception at Sea World. Included with the reception is a private tour of Sea World’s impressive landscape, led by Sea World’s horticulture team. Saturday, June 18 starts with FNGLA’s Annual Business meeting where a Year in Review video is presented, industry awards winners recognized, and officer elections take place. A unique conservation tour along Shingle Creek, which is the headwaters of the Everglades, takes place Saturday afternoon at the hotel. The convention finale is the President’s Gala taking place on Saturday evening. FNGLA is honored to have Gary Cain, President and CEO of the Central Florida Boys and Girls Club as the evening’s keynote speaker. Gary has been recognized as one of Orlando’s most powerful people and named a 2014 CEO of the Year by the Orlando Business Journal. The President’s Gala ends with current FNGLA President Billy Butterfield passing the Big Shoes to FNGLA’s incoming president Rob Shoelson, after which the dance floor opens and the music gets lively. Thanks to FNGLA’s Action Chapter for hosting the convention, including the welcome bags, plant decorations for the events and the hospitality suite – which will be open each evening of the convention. A complete schedule, hotel information and online registration is available at http://www.fngla.org/events/annual-convention/ Please note the convention sponsors listed on the convention webpage. It is through their support that the convention can provide great value at a low price. For additional information contact Linda Adams at ladams@fngla.org.
PRESIDENT’S LETTER
Billy Butterfield, FCLC FNGLA 2015-2016 President
Convention is next week. My year as president is almost over. I wasn’t sure I’d make it. I think there was talk of a coup when my nomination was first announced. And those were some of my friends! I always fancied myself as a benevolent dictator, an “endowed by the creator” kind of person, rather than an elected official who had to work with others. I’m too impatient trying to convince people to give me what I want. I’m a “don’t like to share my toys” kind of guy. It seems like yesterday when then FNGLA president Halsey Beshears called and told me the Nominating Committee had placed me on a list of possible picks for secretary/treasurer and I would be on a path to the presidency. He told me what my duties would be and what kind of commitment I would need to make for the next four years. I never knew how much I would get out of this commitment. When I look back, it hasn’t been the time it’s taken to be on the Board, it’s what I’ve gotten out of that time which has benefited me the most. Last night, I attended FNGLA’s Broward Chapter installation meeting. I had the privilege of sitting at a table with two past presidents, Wes Parrish and Joe Cialone, and their presidential advisors, Vicki and Lenore. Vicki asked me what the highlight of my year had been and I had to think about it a bit. What I finally came up with was it has been going to meetings such as this one and seeing the energy, enthusiasm, history, and the future of our industry. Incoming Broward Chapter President Christy Savage is full of energy and good thoughts. She had Vicki and Lenore’s name tags printed with “Presidential Advisor” on them. What a personal touch. She had birthday cake for the members in attendance with recent birthdays. She brought her children and some other friends to show them what it is she does when she says she has an FNGLA event. What fun, energetic, and effective group of people make up the leadership of our Broward Chapter! Last week, along with Robert Bowden, director of “Beautiful Leu Gardens” in Orlando, I attended FNGLA’s Northeast Chapter meeting in Jacksonville. The meeting was held at the Jacksonville Zoo and Botanical Gardens. I had been to a couple of other meetings in the past at the zoo, but its director, Bob Chabot, has taken horticulture and the gardens to a new level. Now it’s becoming known as a botanical garden with animals. Robert and Bob did an after event tour of the property and I felt like I was riding around with two very happy plant geeks as they were talking about the beautiful landscaping. FNGLA’s Northeast Chapter has always been a chapter to which I enjoy going. President Halsey’s convention was held here at Glen St. Mary’s Nursery. Lin and Maggie Taber were our hosts then and they were there at the zoo for last week’s meeting. Their chapter’s Christmas Party is held in an old lodge and they put it on as a pot luck with a lot of “Baker County Wine tasting” happening. Current Chapter President Shawn Thomas has been an exceptional leader and incoming President Jerry Stageman will continue the Northeast Chapter’s legacy of strong leadership. Its board is also strong with many longtime board members and officers and a few of the next generation stepping up and getting involved. A couple of weeks ago I attended FNGLA’s Miami Dade Chapter nursery tour. President Peggy Machin and chapter director Mary Schneider put together a tour which attracted mostly young landscape architects, many of whom were barely familiar with FNGLA, our programs and activities. What a great way to bring new industry professionals into the FNGLA fold! The tour was full of questions for the tour leaders at each nursery, and I’m sure they ended up with a new group of FNGLA fans. Tonight, I am at the Dade County IFAS Extension office at the Chapter’s nominating and Chili Cook off meeting. Another great way to get people to attend your chapter meeting -- have them bring their own chili and then feed them! Unfortunately my chili was made on the counter at the Bahia Mar Hotel the night before, so I placed 6th…. out of six entries. I got my fill of chili though and it looks as if they have a great slate of officers coming in to lead the chapter. There are always so many events going on around the state. FNGLA’s Palm Beach and Miami Dade Chapters just had their fishing tournaments. FNGLA’s Treasure Coast Chapter has its Golf Tournament soon. FNGLA’s Big Bend Chapter Plant Sale is this month. FNGLA’s Action Chapter’s Batson Award luncheon will be held in August honoring Ty Strode of AgriStarts. In December, the FNGLA Chapter Christmas Party tour starts and I always look forward to it! How many parties can we attend in a three-week period? The best thing about being a past president is I can continue to go to as many of these kinds of events I choose to attend and see people I’ve enjoyed the privilege of getting to know. I’ll continue to get to see the friends I’ve made all over our state and they are some of the best people in our industry. FNGLA is as strong and as sound as it has ever been. We have the best and hardest working staff of any other group or association anywhere -- and it shows. Thanks to all the leaders and industry professionals who have been involved with FNGLA over the past 60 years – they have enabled me to serve this past year as president. See you at Convention!

Florida Flower Trials Was Bursting with Color!
FNGLA HAPPENINGS
There was lots of “Flower Power” in Orlando on May 12 & 13 during FNGLA’s 2016 Florida Flower Trials (FFT). In its sixth year, FNGLA’s Florida Flower Trials offered three trial sites, Harry P. Leu Gardens, UF/IFAS Orange County Convention Center and Walt Disney World nursery. All featured more than 100 exceptional reasons for attendees to be a part of this amazing educational experience. Each of them had a species and variety name! Top breeders joined attendees right here in Central Florida to see how their new varieties held up in the heat and humidity. Breeders and industry members saw firsthand how these new varieties performed under three different growing and maintenance conditions. The educational event was attended by growers, landscape professionals and industry suppliers. From great topics to tours and lots of return on relationships, it was a perfect time to see new varieties at their best. Kate Santos, Dummen Orange opened the program with a keynote talk on Translating the Language of Flowers to Today’s Marketplace. As Kate shared in her presentation, the Floriculture Industry was estimated at $4.37 billion for 2015. Florida ranks second in the nation, up 12% to 1.03 billion in sales for 2015 and bedding/garden plants are the largest contributor to this number. The statistics show consumers love a garden filled with color and are making purchases to prove it. FFT is just one of the program that FNGLA uses to connect the right plants with the right places and provides the nursery and landscape industry with key information to produce successful results. A big thanks goes to the three trial managers Keri Byrum, Harry P. Leu Gardens; Kelly Greer, UF/IFAS Orange County Extension Services; and Melissa Shepherd, Walt Disney World Nursery. Along with their team of support, the trial managers made sure that the gardens were at their best. Each of the new varieties in the gardens will be evaluated four times throughout the season. Without the managers’ hardwork and attention to detail, the gardens would not be successful. Another big thanks goes Brad’s Bedding Plants and Speedling for their support and willingness to grow out the new varieties featured in all three locations as well as the growers that supplied their own varieties. Thanks also goes to Ameriscapes Landscape Management Services, Orlando for the installation of the trial gardens and to our many sponsors who support this program. These programs would not exist without the continued involvement of industry volunteers. For more information on the FFT program, contact Linda Reindl, lreindl@fngla.org.
THE
SUNTORY® COLLECTION
5
New at the 2016 Florida Flower Trials were the People’s Choice Awards. Attendees were asked to vote for their top three choice of the new varieties and the votes are in. 1st CHOICE:
Suntory’s Dipladenia ‘Sundenia Coral’ Sundenia® dipladenia offers the large flowers consumers love in mandevillas but on a compact, manageable plant. Sundenia® flowers are 3” to 5” in diameter – double the size of a typical dipladenia. Colors include Red, White and Coral. Foliage is glossy and green. Sundenia® are ideal as patio pots, hanging baskets, for use on balconies, in window boxes, as bedding plants and even as houseplants.
Dipladenia ‘Sundenia Coral’
2nd CHOICE:
HemGenetics’ French Marigold ‘Chica Flame’ One of the top selling bedding plants for heat performance, ‘Chica Flame’ is a new color addition to the large-flowered French Marigold ‘Chica’ series. Perfect for packs, small pots to 4” or quart pots, ‘Chica’ takes drought very well. ‘Chica’ series has larger full-crested, double flowers and outshows other French Marigolds in it’s class, such as ‘Hero’ or ‘Bonanza.’
3rd CHOICE: French Marigold ‘Chica Flame’
Danzinger’s Lobularia ‘White Stream’ With a floriferous, ball-shaped plant structure, this plant has a wonderful scent of honey. The ‘Stream’ series was bred to be heat tolerant and are well controlled in nature. They make a great addition to combination pots and blend well with other varieties. Lobularia ‘Stream’ has the garden performance to be planted as a bedding accent plant in the garden. They can handle early to late season and will add a scent of spring to any planting and in the garden center. Pests and fungi are something that needs to be protected against as with all plant species.

FNGLA HAPPENINGS FNGLA Announces Legislators of the Year & Friend of the Industry Award of 2016 FNGLA NAMES LEGISLATORS OF THE YEAR FNGLA is very pleased to recognize Florida State Senator Kelli Stargel (R-Lakeland) and Representative Jake Raburn (R-Valrico) as the 2016 Legislators of the Year! Senator Kelli Stargel exercised strong leadership yet again on behalf of Florida’s nursery and landscape industry, and all of agriculture during this past legislative session. She championed very important pieces of FNGLA-supported legislation. First, she sponsored the legislation which now exempts certain agricultural buildings from the Florida Code. Thanks to Senator Stargel, the authority of local governments to impose special assessments on raw agricultural lands is now eliminated. And, Senator Stargel pushed passage of critically needed updates to Florida’s AgriTourism laws. A graduate of the U.F. College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Representative Jake Raburn has been a stalwart champion for UF/IFAS funding throughout his tenure. Also, during the 2016 session, Rep. Raburn sponsored the comprehensive agricultural legislation, which, in part, increased penalties for individuals who knowingly release an invasive pest. Representative Raburn also sponsored the House companion to Senator Stargel’s bill exempting certain agricultural buildings from the Florida Fire Code. Both Senator Stargel and Representative Raburn continue to demonstrate their strong leadership and support of agriculture and Florida’s nursery and landscape professionals. Each of these two public servants embody the pro-business, agriculture-friendly, common sense ideals which FNGLA seeks from our legislators. Congratulations to Senator Kelli Stargel and Representative Jake Raburn for being honored as FNGLA’s Legislators of the Year for 2016!

INDUSTRY NEWS New Head of UF/IFAS Mid-Fla REC By Jack Payne jackpayne@ufl.edu @JackPayneIFAS We’re bringing in a new landscaping leader from Utah to lead our research center in Apopka, and he really wants to spruce up the neighborhood. The neighborhood is greater Orlando and other urban areas, and he sees commercial nurseries and residential backyards as the key to keeping Florida’s growth green. After all, Roger Kjelgren (pronounced KELL-gren) knows he’ll be one of 1,000 people moving to Florida the day he starts his job in August as director of the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Mid-Florida Research and Education Center. Two things have to happen for Roger to fulfill his vision of keeping cities green. First, nurseries have to stay profitable so they don’t turn into subdivisions. Second, he wants to connect directly to your customers to foster a culture of sustainability in the form of beautiful Florida-friendly landscapes and gardens. I hire hundreds of people a year. But the Apopka boss is among the most important to FNGLA. Ben Bolusky sat on the search committee and helped us find the right person for this key position. We couldn’t have found Roger at a better time. We really needed a water wonk and a leader in landscaping. We got both in Roger. In fact, Roger co-created and led the Center for Water Efficient Landscaping at Utah State University. So he’ll be particularly interested in supporting UF/IFAS research on water quality and conservation. And he’s well positioned to have Apopka’s science complement what’s coming out of the UF/IFAS Center for Landscape Conservation & Ecology. In fact, several CLCE faculty work at the MFREC. Roger also co-taught a course in low-water landscape design and management with a landscape architect for 17 years. Roger’s background makes him a great fit for putting the full range of MFREC’s expertise at your service. He intends to reach out to landscape architects, designers, and planners who shape the big picture of what a community looks like. Roger also hopes to diminish any barriers there might be between the horticultural production of fruits and vegetables and landscape horticulture. Roger’s thinking is that FNGLA can do good and do well by encouraging urban populations’ increased interest in producing a bit of their own food and in helping reduce their community’s carbon footprint. That means a greener community and a healthy industry to support it. Look for Roger at The Landscape Show in Orlando September 15-17. Or if you can’t wait that long, you can reach him in Utah at roger. kjelgren@usu.edu . Jack Payne is the University of Florida’s senior vice president for agriculture and natural resources and leader of the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.
