TPIE: A Trend-Setting Tropical Escape The Tropical Plant Industry Exhibition (TPIE) starts the business year for buyers and producers of tropical plants and related products. Scheduled January 18 – 20, 2012 at the Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale, TPIE is the tropical escape from colder climates to the sunny shores of Fort Lauderdale, FL. This international event is also a tropical escape to the largest and most diverse marketplace for colorful, exotic and in-demand tropical foliage. The 2012 TPIE continues with the new Wednesday/ Thursday/Friday format which was well received last year. “TPIE is a brilliant way to start the new business year,” advises TPIE Chairman Charlie Martin, Harold B. Martin, Inc. “This is the show where exhibitors introduce their newest, coolest plants and products. With more than 400 exhibiting companies, it is the best industry show to find the exciting and colorful plant varieties your customers are going to buy as soon as they see them.” TPIE is committed to provide buyers and exhibitors a competitive head start by once again starting the show with a complimentary session highlighting consumer and industry trends. This key information can immediately be applied on the trade show floor. Doug Stephens, president of Retail Prophet, will give TPIE’s audience a look at future consumer trends and their anticipated impacts on both retail and wholesale markets. Doug is the author of Retail Prophet’s Shift 2020 Retail Trends Report and is widely admired as one of the world’s only retail industry futurists. His intellectual work and thinking have influenced many of North America’s best known retailers and brands including Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Hudson’s Bay Company, Disney, Loblaw and Benjamin Moore. Sponsored by Hermann Engelmann Greenhouses and SK/Soendgen Keramik, the TPIE Tropical Trends Opening Session takes place at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, January 18. TPIE is known for mixing fun with business and 2012 will be no exception. The first day of the show ends with the TPIE Happy Hour, sponsored by Suntory. It moves off the show floor this year to the multi-level convention center grand lobby, where tall walls of glass provide a one-of-a-kind view of the Port Everglades Cruise Port and some of the largest ships in the world.

PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Halsey Beshears FNGLA 2011-2012 President

Every company today that has been in business for any amount of time knows you must have a plan. Some leaders are better than others when it comes to planning. There are those who have the innate ability to conceive and execute strategy. They are able to create plans that encompass short term goals (2 to 6 milestones in 6-12 months) and long term goals (1 to 3 milestones in 3-5 years) and lay out meticulous steps to achieve these measures. Then you have leaders who take more of a macro point of view and focus on the broader issues (3 to 5 years out) rather than short term issues. With lesser regard for short term goals, these leaders are not worried about the here and now, rather they concentrate their efforts on larger (yet fewer) milestones in the future. With both types of thinkers, businesses can thrive. However, there are two critical components for these types of thinkers to recognize in order for them to be truly successful: communication and execution. Communication is part one of the equation. By communicating the plan to your internal leaders, managers and employees, you build consensus. When you empower your people and let them know your thoughts as to what direction you see the company going, they are not only your greatest advocates; they are the people who will ultimately see the milestones reached. As a leader, you need to constantly communicate and remind your people of the goals at hand. It is always easy to lose sight of the forest for the trees ahead. For example, a company recently went through a strategic plan building process. One of the chief complaints from the internal managers and leaders throughout the exercise was communication was neither constant nor consistent. Based on past experiences within the company, the managers saw this as a serious obstacle for the company to overcome. Despondent by these findings, the CEO of the company asked, “How is this possible?” Communications were always being delivered (in his own eyes) via meetings or email. The moderator responded by saying that communication is always found to be a common complaint among employees. The lesson learned: you can never communicate enough. Walk up to one of your business employees right now and ask, “What are our company’s goals for this year (next year, 3 years, 5 years or however long)?” If you get a blank, dull, stare back or that deer-in-theheadlights look, perhaps you are not communicating efficiently or well enough. The second part of the equation and, equally as important, is execution. A company may have the best plan in the world, yet without constantly revisiting it, modifying it to the current situation, and following through on it, a plan is worthless. Everyone

greenline_lite.indd 2

has heard the saying, “plan your work, and work your plan.” Yet, too often, leaders fail to respond to critical moments during the business cycle. In larger companies, it is difficult to stay nimble, make adjustments on the fly and adapt to challenging situations. 99.9% of businesses in the United States have fewer than 500 employees. Two percent of businesses in our country gross over $10 million annually. That means most of us are small enough to adapt on the fly and change with the times. Technology today enables us to make appropriate changes and implement them faster than years past. So, really, most companies have the flexibility to modify their plans when the situations dictate. This does not mean abandon all hope and toss your strategy out the window. Leaders learn to roll with the punches and keep the ship on course. The bottom line is: don’t fall in love with your plan. Tweak it, modify it, communicate the changes with your employees and execute. It is always fulfilling to see your plan succeed from start to finish. The volunteers and team of professionals who run FNGLA daily are great examples of planning your work and working your plan. Just recently, The Landscape Show took place in Orlando. For those of you who missed it, the layout was improved from years past allowing for a more consistent traffic flow. With fewer booths, vendors and attendees, the show would be a disaster if the committee and staff continued doing the same thing as years past. Yet, by paying attention year-in and year-out to trends, listening to buyers and exhibitors, the committee and staff delivered a truly efficient and solid event. The aisles seemed busier and there was more buzz in the room. The overall perception was the trade show was well attended and more positive than previous trade shows. This is the result of great planning, adaptation and execution to a well laid-out strategy. So, if you don’t have a plan for your business, find the time to start the process of building one. Gather the leaders and thinkers within your company and start to craft a strategy that works for your company. It does not matter what size company you are, everyone needs some type of plan. During these tumultuous economic times, it is critical to have a focus and direction for your business and your employees. Communicate the plan with your people and then see it through. Good luck! Very Respectfully, Halsey W. Beshears FNGLA President halsey@simpsonnurseries.com http://web.sba.gov/faqs/faqIndexAll.cfm?areaid=24

FNGLA HAPPENINGS It was Full Sail Ahead at The Landscape Show! FNGLA Mourns Founder Death

It was Full Sail Ahead at The Landscape Show as more than 6,600 nursery and landscape professionals gathered at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL, September 29 – October 1. Considered the largest business-to-business event for Florida’s nursery and landscape industry, The Landscape Show showcased more than 400 companies in 762 exhibit booths. The Landscape Show was an optimistic venue for industry professionals not only to do business and learn from one another, but also to find new ideas and resources, and become inspired and encouraged. The show was a spectacle of towering palms and trees, new and unusual fruit trees, flowering shrubs, herbaceous plants and annuals, tropicals, turf and more. Add to that all the supplies needed for nursery production, landscape design, installation and maintenance, as well as garden center supplies and services. It was easy to see The Landscape Show offered something for everyone commercially involved in nursery products and landscape services.

Roy Rood was a pioneer in Florida’s nursery and landscape industry, establishing Rood Landscape Co. in Jupiter, FL

The Landscape Show will take place September 27-29, 2012 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL.

At The Landscape Show:

as one of Florida’s premier landscape businesses. Roy was a believer in the future and offered his company as training grounds for many young people who went on to become landscape industry leaders in their own right.

Roy received countless honors and recognitions for his service to his community and the industry. Highlights include FNGLA’s Wendell Butler Award and induction into FNGLA’s Hall of Fame. Most recently, Roy was named an honorary member of the American Society of Landscape Architecture (ASLA) in recognition of his many years of influence which provided notable service to the profession of landscape architecture. He was FNGLA President in 1958-59. Preceded in death by his longtime wife Patricia, Roy will be missed by the many, many lives he touched.

INDUSTRY NEWS FNGLA Partners and Promotes at USGBC’s Greenbuild & Beyond For a third consecutive year, FNGLA partnered with the National Foliage Foundation and Green Plants for Green Buildings to showcase interior plants as an element of healthy building interiors at Greenbuild, the U.S. Green Building Council’s annual trade event. Held October 4 – 7 in Toronto, the event brings together over 25,000 of the nation’s green-thinking builders and a concentration of LEED accredited professionals. Linda Reindl and Jennifer Nelis (from FNGLA’s professional staff), Joy Dorst, FNGLA’s Green Consultant and “Project Carbon” Researcher Dr. Bodie Penisi, Associate Professor at the University of Georgia were on hand to talk both science and plants with show attendees. In the past three years of industry involvement, we’ve secured both a place FNGLA was a visible presence at the USGBC’s holder in the International Green Construction Code (IGCC) for interior tradeshow, Greenbuild, promoting the science plants and have successfully secured a pilot credit for plants in the LEED point behind plants as part of healthy interior rating system. While these steps have been relatively “behind the scenes,” their environments. implications are paving the way for wider main-stream use of plants in interior settings. The LEED point rating system’s formula for interior plants, in its most basic calculation, tabulates one houseplant per 100 square feet. Clearly, there is significant activity and immense benefit to the industry’s foliage producers and interiorscape professionals. Stay tuned for updates on additional LEED-oriented happenings!

Nurseryman Among Four FDACS & Florida Agriculture Hall of Fame Foundation 2012 Inductees Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam and the Florida Agricultural Hall of Fame Foundation announced four Florida agricultural leaders will be inducted into the Florida Agricultural Hall of Fame. The Agricultural Hall of Fame recognizes men and women who have made outstanding contributions to the state’s agriculture industry. “The 2012 Florida Agriculture Hall of Fame inductees were chosen not only for their commitment to improving their own craft through technology and innovation, but also for their willingness to share these advancements with the industry as a whole,” said Commissioner Putnam. “I commend each of these Floridians for their contributions to the agriculture industry and our state.” This year’s inductees include longtime industry and FNGLA member Robert Fuchs, Homestead, FL. Fuchs is a premier orchid grower in South Florida and owner of R F Orchids, Inc. His efforts helped place Florida’s orchid industry in the international spotlight and brought recognition to Miami-Dade County for its unique agricultural attractions. Among his many accomplishments, Robert has been referred to as the Orchid King and involved with the American Orchid Society for many years. The other three distinguished receipents are: Laurence P. Cutts, Chipley, FL: third-generation beekeeper Gerald Mixon, Winter Haven, FL: blueberry producer Sidney L. Sumner, Bartow, FL: cattleman
