The Landscape Show Was Blockbuster Success!
SEPTEMBER 27 - 29 2012 The Landscape Show, considered the Southeast’s premier nursery and landscape trade show, was the main event for nearly 7000 industry professionals. Taking place September 27-29 in Orlando, The Landscape Show featured more than 400 exhibitors, dozens of educational sessions and new professional networking activities. The show opened with a pertinent and positive economic forecast from Dr. Charlie Hall who holds the Ellison Chair in International Floriculture at Texas A & M University. Dr. Hall not only gave encouraging data on the economy, but also reminded industry professionals of the tremendous value beyond aesthetics plants, trees and green spaces bring to the marketplace. The show floor was busy with buyers who were not only impressed with the elaborate displays created by the more than 400 exhibitors, they were placing orders and discussing projects in the works. “The Landscape Show was filled with a buzz of optimism and opportunity,” said Ty Strode, Vice President and Director of Marketing of AgriStarts, Inc. and chairman of The Landscape Show. “There was definitely a big increase in business written at this year’s show. I hope it is a sign we are finally turning the corner with the economy.”
As usual, exhibitors at The Landscape Show were not only creative with their displays, but most were informative and many were inspiring and fun. Congratulations are extended to Knox Nursery who received the 2012 Best of Show Booth Award. Sunscape Landscape Nursery was recognized for the most Unusual Specimen and Grandiflora once again received the Best Use of Show Theme Award. For a complete list of Booth Award winners visit http://www.fngla.org/ thelandscapeshow/boothawards.aspx. The TLS Knowledge College (formerly FNGLA Short Course) not only brought exceptional education to The Landscape Show, but constructed its own educational venue on the trade show floor, complete with classroom theaters, a courtyard for networking, a center stage area, and even theater marquees and popcorn. “We want to make professional education a more integral part of The Landscape Show, explained Billy Butterfield, Amersicapes Landscape Management Services and committee member of both The Landscape Show and the TLS Knowledge College. “ The new location of the TLS Knowledge College on the show floor added to the energy and enthusiasm of this year’s show. Hopefully industry members became more aware of the outstanding educational programs we offer each year.” Several new additions to this year’s show proved successful, including a mobile website making it easy to find exhibitors, set up a personal show schedule and keep up with show activities via a smart phone or tablet. “Tapped In”, a new networking event for industry professionals under age 40 was well attended, as nearly 100 young professionals gathered at The Pub at Pointe Orlando to meet and establish business relationships. PRESIDENT’S LETTER
Wes Parrish FNGLA 2012-2013 President
Why Certification? Why should I be certified? Often, when I speak to members who are not certified, that is the question asked. The number of years in the business is usually the rationale behind the question. Well, let’s look at what certification is. According to Wikipedia, one of the most common types of certification in modern society is professional certification, where a person is certified as being able to competently complete a job or task, usually by the passing of an examination. Engineers, attorneys, architects, and accountants are a few college degreed professions that rely on certification processes to verify competency. If we get seriously ill, most of us would not dream of going to a specialist who was not board-certified in that specialty. After every big storm, you hear recommendations to be sure you hire a licensed electrician or roofer to repair your home. Licensure is a very different animal all together. Licensure involves a governmental agency, rather than a professional association. Certification is not a step towards licensure. Professional certification is a self-imposed, raising of the professional standards of an industry. FNGLA’s certification programs have received several recent accolades. FNGLA’s Certified Horticulture Professional (FCHP) program is recognized and approved by both Workforce Florida and the Florida Department of Education as it conforms to the 2007 Florida Career and Professional Education Act (CAPE). CAPE aims to meet Florida’s workforce needs of access to high-wage and high-demand careers.
In the past year, two educational organizations recognized FNGLA for having developed the seamless link between FNGLA and Florida’s horticulture educators who deliver FNGLA’s FCHP program. FNGLA assists instructors by providing teacher training, as well as lesson plans, sample tests, labs and PowerPoint presentations through its website TeachHort.com. The two organizations are the Florida Association of Career and Technical Educators (FACTE) and the National Association of Agriculture Educators NAAE). FCHP is also recognized by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection meets and exceeds the Green Industry Best Management Practices (GI-BMPs) program. Professionals who earn FCHP are also eligible to receive a GI-BMP certificate, which will be required by law as of 2014. More than 1,500 professionals in Florida and The Bahamas hold at least one of FNGLA’s five professional certifications. More than 250 high school students and instructors currently hold the FCHP designation. The list of agencies officially recognizing our certification programs is growing at an increasing pace. FNGLA’s professional certifications are also part of the landscape bid specs of several agencies across the state, requiring those who bid on landscape jobs to hold particular FNGLA certifications. FNGLA is currently developing a list of those agencies and will be utilizing it in upcoming efforts to influence more agencies to recognize and prefer FNGLA’s certifications. With all of the recognitions we are earning and the number of agencies recognizing and preferring FNGLA’s certifications, maybe the question should be, “Why would I not be certified?” Wes Parrish

FNGLA HAPPENINGS Facts & Figures Filled the Room at the Florida Agriculture Financial Management Conference
The Florida Agriculture Financial Management Conference was held on September 9-11 at the Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center in Kissimmee, FL. In its second year, this educational program provided over 150 specialty crop commodity producers with key information on managing their financial risk. Times are tough and providing agricultural producers with the proper financial planning is critical. The multi-day conference focused on assisting growers to better understand the impact of operating decisions on financial performance; identify current marketing trends; and, adopt tax strategies with estate planning. Thanks to funding by a USDA Specialty Crop Block Grant, this conference brought the best agriculture financial advisors and experts from across the country. Industry partners stepped to the plate and offered their financial support and participation in the program. It was a great time of networking, learning and discovering many new ways to equip industry members’ financial toolboxes. When industry professionals are financially strong again, they will be the driving force in returning Florida’s economy to brighter days. For more information about future financial educational programs, contact Linda Reindl, lreindl@fngla.org

MEMBER NEWS 2013 Florida Agriculture Hall of Fame Inductees Announced Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam and the Florida Agricultural Hall of Fame Foundation recently announced four agricultural leaders in Florida who will be inducted into the Florida Agricultural Hall of Fame. The Agricultural Hall of Fame recognizes men and women who have made outstanding contributions to the state’s agriculture industry. “The 2013 Florida Agricultural Hall of Fame inductees all exhibit dedication, service and commitment in improving their specialties, but also to educating the future leaders of Florida’s agriculture industry,” Commissioner Putnam said. “I commend each of these Floridians for their dedication to the betterment of the agriculture industry and our state.” The inductees for 2013 are: DANIEL A. BOTTS - MAITLAND, FL For more than three decades, Botts has been a leader in pesticide policy and a vital advocate on behalf of Florida growers and minor crop producers. Through his leadership on national pesticide policy, Botts has ensured the continued availability of critical products, such as methyl bromide, that make growing fresh fruits and vegetables viable in Florida. Botts serves on many important government and agriculture industry committees, including the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Food Safety and Security Advisory Committee. CHARLES H. BRONSON–KISSIMMEE, FL A fifth generation Floridian, Bronson served as Florida Commissioner of Agriculture from 2001 to 2010. He is a former Florida State Senator and was President of the Southern Association of State Departments of Agriculture in 2006. During his tenure as Commissioner of Agriculture, Bronson negotiated the settlement with BP to remedy effects of the Deepwater Horizon Gulf Oil Spill in 2010 and initiated the “Farm To Fuel” effort to position Florida as a leader in the production of alternative energy. Bronson currently owns and operates 1,333 acres of timber and perennial peanut hay in Madison County, Florida. DR. PAUL L. NICOLETTI– GAINESVILLE, FL Dr. Nicoletti’s field studies on bucellosis, or “Bang’s Disease” led to modifications in the use of brucellosis vaccine, which, in turn, saved the Florida cattle industry millions of dollars and, ultimately, led to the eradication of the disease in the state. Dr. Nicoletti continued his positive impact on the industry through education as a professor at the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Florida for more than 25 years. DR. EUGENE E. TROTTER- GAINESVILLE, FL The late Dr. Trotter dedicated his life to agriculture education and to increasing the leadership capacity of Florida agriculture. He established the Florida Leadership Program for Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Florida, which became the Wedgworth Leadership Institute for Agriculture and Natural Resources in 2002. Dr. Trotter raised more than $2 million to ensure the viability of the program. Orlando Maintenance Exam Sold Out; Still Time to Apply for Installation Exam
Applications are still being accepted for FNGLA’s Certified Landscape Technician (FCLT-Installation) exam on Saturday, November 10th at SeaWorld Horticulture in Orlando. SeaWorld has opened its horticulture complex to FNGLA once again, this time for the landscape installation exam. FCLT is the pre-requisite for FNGLA’s Certified Landscape Contractor (FCLC) certification, which is recognized by several agencies as a requirement to bid on government jobs. Locally, it includes the Orange County Expressway Authority. Deadline to apply is Monday, October 22nd.
FCLT – Installation is the pre-requisite for FNGLA’s Certified Landscape Contractor, which is required to bid on many agency jobs around the state.
For more information on the FCLT exam, and to receive study materials, contact Merry Mott at FNGLA at 800-375-3642. A FREE study guide is included with your registration. It provides information on each exam section and the knowledge and skills you will be asked to demonstrate. City of Miami Beach Presented with Certification Award FNGLA’s certification programs would not be successful without the support of agencies across the state that recognize the professionalism exhibited by those who earn one of FNGLA’s professional designations. At The Landscape Show, FNGLA recognized one such government agency. The City of Miami Beach has included FNGLA’s Certified Landscape Contractors (FCLCs) as part of the requirements to bid on landscape jobs for the city. The award was accepted by Millie McFadden, an FCLC since 1998, and contract administrator for the City of Miami Beach. Having been through the certification process herself, she knows industry certification is a true indicator of a professional’s qualifications and professionalism. Including FNGLA’s certifications provides the means to judge a company’s ability to manage the large areas contracted out when they have certified professionals on staff. This annual award is presented to the agency that supports industry certification through the specification, hiring or other promotion of FNGLA Certified Professionals. For more information, contact Merry Mott or call FNGLA at 800-375-3642.
