The Landscape Show: It’s Almost Show Time! FNGLA’s big event, The Landscape Show, takes place September 27-29 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL. This annual industry event brings together 7,000 nursery and landscape professionals from across the Southeast to do business, take part in exceptional education, exchange ideas and information and discover the newest plants and products our industry has to offer. “We’re very excited about The Landscape Show this year,” noted Ty Strode, chairman of the show and Director of Marketing for Agri-Starts, Inc. “There is a renewed energy within the industry and The Landscape Show is the ideal place to recharge your business.” With more than 400 companies exhibiting at The Landscape Show, this will be the most convenient and efficient venue to see the best selection of plants and products available in the industry right now. Several exhibitors are offering Show-Only specials which add even more incentive to buy at The Landscape Show (TLS). These specials can be found at: http://www.fngla.org/thelandscapeshow/showspecials.aspx. Adding to The Landscape Show convenience factor, the TLS Knowledge College (formerly known as the FNGLA Short Course) offers 25 exceptional professional educational sessions and speakers with Saturday’s programs concentrating

on topics which earn industry CEUs. In addition, complimentary show-floor demonstrations offer quick tips and ideas throughout each day of the TLS. Industry professionals can take advantage of having both education and vendors all in one location. The Landscape Show gets you focused on business as Dr. Charlie Hall, nationally recognized industry economist from Texas A & M, provides his take on the U.S. economy and specifics related to Florida’s nursery and landscape industry. Dr. Hall offers valuable economic and business information in easy-to-apply terms, explaining market data, trends and available industry opportunities. This is a complimentary session for everyone with a TLS badge. Connecting and networking is an important benefit of attending The Landscape Show. While people meet and interact throughout the show and in a variety of settings, a favorite networking spot is The Landscape Show Opening Day Reception. It takes place Thursday, 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. pool side at the (Con’t page 2)

PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Wes Parrish FNGLA 2012-2013 President

My daughter, Jennifer, and her fiancé, Tyler, are really into the extreme races that are so popular these days. One of their first competitions was Muddy Buddy. These strenuous races involve running, cycling, and obstacles with a big mud pit as the finale. Not only do racers need to be in good shape, but they have pretty hefty entrance fees as well. Muddy Buddy is not the only option either. They have a lot of competition. There is also Warrior Dash, Rugged Maniac, Savage Race and Spartan Race to name a few. Obstacles include cargo nets, fire pits, running through shocking wires, and other crazy stuff. These races are popular. One has to ask oneself, why do they do this? I can’t help but compare our industry’s last few years to these races. We are all working harder than we have in decades and for less than we have for decades. When we perceive a bright spot, it is often followed on its heels with a new impediment to sustained success. Business these days seems similar to these races. I personally come home often looking like the end of my day was spent in a mud pit. And, I know I usually feel like I have been put through the wringer. Often I find myself thinking I am getting too old for this. Escalating costs and labor issues have been our wall climb. Lack of business and declining prices are our bike ride through sand. The length of the downturn makes us feel like we’ve been running a marathon. We ask ourselves, why are we doing this? Then it hits us, the reasons we picked this industry still exist. We enjoy the outdoors. We love our fellow industry members. And, we take satisfaction from growing things of beauty and having them incorporated into beautiful landscapes. I know that the motivation for races like Muddy Buddy is the exhilaration and sense of accomplishment upon completion. I also know as we come out of these trying times, we too will experience the same thrills as these mudcovered racers. Challenges? We are ready to ride and climb through them! Wes Parrish

INDUSTRY NEWS National Floriculture Leader Ecke Ranch Sold Following the industry trend of many mergers and acquisitions, California based Ecke Ranch-- the nation’s leader in Poinsettias-- recently sold to Dutchbased Agribio Group, owners of a number of breeding and propagation companies including Fides Oro. For almost 100 years, Ecke Ranch has led the horticulture industry in the breeding and distribution of poinsettias. Ecke Ranch is a worldwide leader in the breeding and development of flowering plants and is one of the top 5 growers in the US, based on greenhouse area managed by the company.

Attend the Farm Roads to Urban Intersections: Ag Institute of Florida Workshop You can’t drive a tractor down a city street. Or can you? Through social media such as blogs, Facebook and Twitter, you can drive a tractor, herd cows, share harvest updates and talk about hot news topics on even the busiest urban streets, anywhere in the world. Social media opens doors and sparks discussions that give us the opportunity to share our perspective on what we do, why we do it, and the values that keep us doing it year after year. But how do you know which road to take? Which vehicle is right for you or your company? And how do you avoid getting lost along the way? On October 10 in Lake Buena Vista, attend the Farm Roads to Urban Intersections, a workshop exploring social media avenues from planning your trip to “are we there yet?” Guest speakers will focus on social media options, strategies for using these tools effectively for businesses and organizations, and how to connect with non-agriculture audiences.

Ecke will maintain its brand name after the acquisition. And while Paul Ecke, the CEO will be leaving the business after nearly 25 years to work in the family’s real estate business, the rest of management and breeders will remain with the company.

This workshop is for: • Companies or individuals who feel stuck in their social media efforts • Communications professionals who want to use social tools more effectively • Those who wants to better understand how social media shapes how people view agriculture

A statement from Ecke says for the 2012-13 sales season, sales and marketing programs will remain as published and Ecke will continue with a “business as usual” approach to support brokers and customers.

This event includes the Agriculture Institute of Florida’s 2012 Annual Meeting and luncheon and is sponsored by the Florida Fruit & Vegetable Association, Farm Credit and the Florida Sod Growers Cooperative.

For more details on Ecke Ranch and the sale, visit: http://www.ecke.com.

Membership in the Ag Institute of Florida is open to companies, organizations, and individuals who are interested in Florida agriculture and communicating more effectively about the industry. For details on joining, go to: http://www.aiflorida.org/sub.asp?PageID=6.

INDUSTRY NEWS Identify Citrus Disease with New iPhone App A new iPhone application, available from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, will help homeowners identify and report possible citrus pests and diseases. The free application, called “Save our Citrus” is available at the iTunes Application store. The USDA is currently in the process of building an application platform compatible with Android smart phones. The application is part of an ongoing effort by USDA and the citrus industry to partner with residential citrus tree owners to combat the spread of the invasive insect Asian citrus psyllid and the deadly citrus disease it caries, huanglongbing. Once the application is downloaded, the homeowner can set up a profile complete with GPS coordinates and upload pictures of their own citrus trees and compare it to pictures of infected trees. The application also allows the homeowner to report suspicious insects and tree symptoms. There is also a link to the Save Our Citrus Website and YouTube channel where the homeowner can find out more about invasive pests and diseases. Today, one or more of these diseases threatens every acre of citrus in America, from Florida to California. In 2012, states impacted by one or more of these diseases include California, Arizona, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina and Hawaii. Beyond the 50 states, the threat to fruits also extends to several American territories, including Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa and the U.S. Virgin Islands. With the rapid spread of citrus diseases, USDA realized the need to engage residential citrus growers and request their help to keep an eye out for citrus diseases in backyards, orchards, groves and everywhere the diseases pose a threat. Under USDA’s Blueprint for Stronger Service, APHIS has announced several program improvements. Investing in technology, such as the Save Our Citrus app, has allowed APHIS to modernize and improve its customer service and make better use of available resources. Improvements to technology and customer service will help to create more timely, predictable and higherquality products. Visit the app page on the Save Our Citrus site for a free download on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch mobile devices. To learn more: visit http://www. SaveOurCitrus.org.
