Plan Ahead & Navigate On-Site

The Knowledge College 2014 TLS Knowledge College has specialized workshops just for you! Whether you need continuing education units (CEU’s) or just plan to sharpen your business skills, The Knowledge College program features six unique hands-on workshops to help keep you in step with industry competition. Choose one or multiple workshops and build a program that is tailor-made to meet your needs.

Wednesday, September 24 / 1:30 - 4:30 p.m. Best Management Practices (BMP’s) for Container Nurseries

Drs. Tom Yeager & Juanita Popenoe, University of Florida/IFAS Extension

(buses to workshop site will leave at 12:30 p.m. from convention center) BMP’s for container nurseries are a proactive approach to protecting surface and groundwater quality. Growers who participate in the voluntary program now and adhere to the criteria are presumed to be in compliance with water quality standards. This workshop will teach you how to provide proper documentation and secure the tools needed to be waived from state-imposed liability and possible fees for non-compliance. If you operate a container nursery, take the time now to be in the know! (Lunch and transportation to nursery will be provided.)

Pest Management Workshop

Tim Flowers, Walt Disney World, Lake Buena Vista, FL & Suzanne Wainwright- Evans, Buglady Consulting, Slatington, PA Creating the ideal mix of biological and chemical controls for managing pests in the landscape takes years of experience, not just luck. This workshop will provide a hands-on approach to identify some of the new and potential threats to the landscape, understand application methods and help attendees evaluate the costs of using biocontrols vs. traditional spray programs. Learn simple steps that will shave costs from your pesticide programs. By being selective when choosing the right insecticide and understanding the timing of treatments, you can preserve the natural predators and provide your customers with a pest-free environment.

Thursday, September 25 / 1:30 - 4:30 p.m. Landscape Design for 21st Century Living – Part 1 Rob Templar Williams and Moira Farnham, Garden Design School, Devizes, Wiltshire, England

Customized for landscape designers of all levels, this workshop explores the principle processes and building blocks to achieve excellent landscape design. Led by award-winning designers and world class garden design instructors, Rob Templar Williams and Moira Farnham, they will share their unique design philosophy and wealth of experience. Be ready as they bust garden design industry myths and push you beyond your comfort zone.

Garden Center Workshop:

Make the Most of Your Retail Hot Spots This workshop offers key dos and don’ts of laying out retail garden center spaces. Find out how to create the ultimate roadmap that will enable your customers to navigate through the entire store with ease. It’s time to think about your store layout not as a set of departments but as unique pathways to enhance your customers’ overall experience.

Friday, September 26 / 9:00 a.m. - 12 noon Efficiency in the Landscape Workshop:

Principles of the Five S’s

Do your trucks and trailers need a redesign? Is your crew constantly losing or misplacing things because equipment is unorganized? This workshop will provide practical ways to incorporate the “Five S” principles into your business. SORT, STRAIGHTEN, SHINE, STANDARDIZE AND SUSTAIN are the key words that define the principles of an efficient and effective workspace and will create an organized work environment.

Landscape Design for 21st Century Living – Part 2

Rob Templar Williams and Moira Farnham, Garden Design School, Devizes, Wiltshire

Beautiful yards and landscapes rarely happen by accident. This workshop will demonstrate the importance of designing and controlling space, rather than allowing the design of a landscape to be driven by the choice of planting material, hard scape materials and other features. Rob and Moira will examine, explore and analyze the universal key principles and golden rules of landscape design.
