As we move into the final countdown towards 2013 we must take the time out to thank you for your company at nights this year. To all who came out to marvel at performances from established names like Macy Gray, Dwele, Quadron and Eric Roberson, to those who watched new stars the likes of Lana Del Rey and Miguel emerge, some prefer to be in the company of legend and musical folklore like Bobby Womack, Cameo and KRS-ONE. To some it may be cheesy to say that the real star of Jazz Cafe shows is the audience and we hope our advent build up keeps you coming back like an encore. Before 2012 is over we will welcome the legend that is Ginger Baker, J Dilla ‘Rebirth of Detroit Tour’ and Lalah Hathaway. To add to that we have shows from artists that hold aloft the original traditions of their genres in Royal Southern Brotherhood and Agitation Free and we’ll be wrapping the year up with a special New Year’s Eve event with Mica Paris and Jazzie B. Dizraeli And The Small Gods
WED 31 OCT, THU 1 & 2 NOV, £25
THE S.O.S. BAND Sound Of Success Band originally formed in 1977 going on to partner with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis to create a run of hits that will always be reflective of the 80s but remain relevant to this very day. From their first major hit ‘Take Your Time’ through ‘No One’s Gonna Love You’, through ‘Tell Me If You Still Care’, ‘Just Be Good To Me’ and ‘The Finest’ to mention just a few. The list of artists that have covered and sampled S.O.S. Band over the years includes Janet Jackson, Monica, Maxwell, Beats International & A$AP Rocky.
SAT 3 NOV, £10
DIZRAELI AND THE SMALL GODS A seemingly un-stereotypical marriage of hip hop and folk music played by a 7 piece band arranged by Brighton MC, poet and singer Dizraeli, for the recording and consequent touring of his debut LP ‘Engurland (City Shanties)’ in 2009. All quite accomplished as individuals, in unison The Gods perfectly capture the poetry, emotion, wit and cinematic qualities in Diz’s ‘melodic, unashamedly heartfelt reinvention of hip hop’. Having earned spots at Glastonbury and Queen Elizabeth Hall alongside beatboxer Shlomo and working with Folk Singer Chris Wood, this band bravely forged a lane all of their own. www.dizraeli.com

THE ROYAL SOUTHERN BROTHERHOOD They said that rock ‘n’ roll was dead, oh how wrong they were! Not only is rock’n’roll still alive and kicking it is ‘headed for a new horizon’ as The Royal Southern Brotherhood drag a thrilling new brand of blues-rock and white-hot musicianship from the Southern States onto the world stage. Together Cyril Neville and Devon Allman son of Gregg Allman unite two Southern rock ‘n’ roll bloodlines that tower above all. Add to the mix Mike Zito, the blues ace whose ear for melody provides the counterpoint to his wingman’s rocking tendencies along with bassist Charlie Wooten and drummer Yonrico Scott: both heavyweight names in their own right. www.royalsouthernbrotherhood.com

AGITATION FREE Legendary German experimental rock outfit Agitation Free formed in 1967 embraced the concept of performing long and free improvisations, experimenting with the use of liquid projectors, slide shows and their own films in live performances. A feature of their sound is the pioneering electronics of Michael Hoenig, one of Germany’s best musicians for creating the atmospheric melodies and powerful-layered sound-scapes which define the band’s style. Also featured are guitarists Lutz Ulbrich and Gustl Lutjens whose magic fingers could conjure up exotic Eastern scales or soaring melodies with ease. Drummer Burghard Rausch and bassist Michael ‘Fame’ Günther were a polyrhythmic rhythm section extraordinaire that propelled the music. www.agitationfree.com Senshukai presents

Aesthetic Sounds presents
MON 12 & THU 15 NOV, £27.50 LALAH HATHAWAY + JULIE DEXTER ‘HER NAME IS LEGENDARY. HER MUSIC IS TIMELESS.’ Lalah Hathaway is the daughter of Soul legend Donny. Lalah has captivated audiences by channelling the essence of her father's spirit in her music, while adding her signature flare. Her ability to touch a listener's soul in one phrase is an extraordinary gift that is synonymous with the Hathaway brand. Her career has spanned two decades and with each release from 1990s self-titled LP to 2011’s ‘Where It All Begins’ she appears to be still blooming as an artist who doesn’t take for granted her heritage in building her own legacy. www.lalahhathaway.com
TUE 13 NOV, £14.50 IRMA + DREAM KOALA Driven by the audacity of youth, 20-year-old Cameroonian French resident Irma has a sound that reveals her personality: soft vocals floating in a haze, evoking a gentle humbleness, perfectly consistent with her shyness. On her album ‘Letter To The Lord’ she plays almost all of the instruments. Since the release of her album, Irma has collaborated with and opened for a number of major French artists including -M- and Tété. Crowds seem to be falling under the spell of Irma’s husky melodies at shows and European Festival appearances, thus she was nominated for Best French Act at the 2012 MTV Europe Music Awards.

FINLEY QUAYE + AKIM (SOLO FROM CANADA) Those only aware of Finley through his commercial success may not be aware he is the son of jazz musician, Cab Kaye, and the brother of noted guitarist, Caleb Quaye. Duke Ellington was Finley's godfather. Finley heard jazz as a child living in London with his mother who would take young Finley with her regularly to Ronnie Scott’s jazz club catching very rare performances of American jazz musicians touring Europe such as Buddy Rich, who recorded his live album there in 1980. His mother introduced him to Lionel Hampton in Edinburgh. Duke Ellington made an indelible impact on Finley's life and his musical outlook. www.finleyquaye.com

+ MARCUS BONFANTI
Debut London show for genius 70s multi-instrumentalist. Shuggie Otis’ most recognised body of work is ‘Freedom Flight’ from which came ‘Strawberry Letter 23’ which became a hit for The Brothers Johnson with it’s sampling also driving many songs by modern hip hop and r&b artists. Otis is a true visionary, compared at the age of 15 with Hendrix and the great kings of blues guitar, the young phenom went on to make another expansive, genre-defying, deeply curious album, 1974’s ‘Inspiration Information’. Both records ‘crafted as a one-man band, floored Sly Stone and predated Prince by half a decade.
JAZZ CAFE MEETS... SHUGGIE OTIS It’s great to have you back! What is the impetus for returning to the stage to play live shows? I am very inspired, as I 'have been' for some years now to play publicly again. I did take a small break, which I'm almost sure that by now, whoever reads this, or knows 'anything' about me, should understand that sometimes a hiatus becomes necessary. The album release on Sony has been a big reason to get back out there, but most of all, I am ready now, and excited to get back to London after all these years. When was your last performance? The last live performance I played was at the ‘Hollywood Palladium’, at the 'Mos-Def' - 'Erykah Badu' concert. It was a unique experience playing with samples 'only' for the first time, but it was fun. I played on ‘Blue Black Jack’. A song that Mos had asked me to play on for on ‘The New Danger’ album. Earlier this year there was a limited edition 7’ release of Inspiration Information b/w Magic that magically appeared on the shelves for RecordStore Day 2012. I heard there's something in store for early next year can you give any hints?
I am releasing a double album package on Sony, so look out for something special for record store day around that. I am also currently recording new material. I now own and run my own company entitled: ‘Shugiterius Enterprises LLC’. I have already started on my new music, on analog tape, my preferred method of recording. Inspiration Information inspired many musicians to hone their craft. Have you had an opportunity to record anything recently? What inspires you these days? As noted above, yes I am currently recording brand new music for a 2013 release. In fact, I have never stopped recording in my home studio since the '70s. My Inspiration’ comes from GOD. I believe that life is some sort of a 'plan'. The ups and downs of a musician’s life are no different than anyone else. I happen to be very inspired to play, and travel right now. Any chance for more dates next year around the Inspiration Information release? Yes, plans are already in motion for tour dates around the album launch – watch this space!

JAZZ CAFE MEETS... GINGER BAKER There seems to be some confusion as to whether you are a jazz or a rock drummer? Unfortunately the press like to refer to me as a rock drummer. I just play how I play. Do you think there is a media necessity to put you into a pigeonhole? I really don’t know! Cream was put into this bag of being a rock and roll band and it wasn’t, 80 percent of Cream’s music if not more was improvised, we never played the same two notes running. I was able to become great friends, play with and have the respect of Max Roach, Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, Philly Joe Jones and Phil Seamen all Jazz players. I had the pleasure of playing with them and we all became inseparable friends, it means more to me than lots of money and things, to have the friendship and respect of the guys I idolise means the world to me! At your age are you able to maintain the level of drumming you are known for? In some ways I think I am playing better than I have ever played, obviously I’ve not got the strength and stamina to do a twenty-minute drum solo but I certainly enjoy playing. It’s about all I have got left, it’s quite a miracle that all that hasn’t been taken away from me is my ability to play the drums, I’m 73 now, still playing and enjoying it.
Is there a up and coming drummer you like? I don’t really know. NO! I don’t listen to music, I never have done, except maybe before I became a musician or in my early years. I’ve never had fantastic technique, but it’s not how many notes you play in a bar it’s where you play them and the notes that you don’t play. How do you react to statements like ‘you are the most influential drummer of the 1960s’ and ‘it was rare to see drummers with two kicks before you’? That’s a lot of crap! In the Duke Ellington band every drummer had two bass drums it was Ellington’s invention, actually (Keith) Moon got a two bass drum before me. In1966 in we watched a gig and I was very impressed with some of the stuff the drummer played on two bass’s so I said to Moon I’m definitely going to get a two bass drum kit and we went into Premier Drum Shop and bought two identical kits, strung them together and made it fit to my specifications but Moon actually was playing a two bass drum before I was. If you could re-create one moment from your time in Cream which moment would that be? God knows… I dunno, (laughs) probably the first time we played together, there was just a magic there, it just worked immediately, just like the band now first time we played together we all enjoyed it, it just works.

Janet Kay
Carroll Thompson
FRI 28 & SAT 29 DEC, £18.50
JANET KAY & CARROLL THOMPSON Affectionately known as the ‘Queens of Lover’s Rock’, Janet Kay first familiarised herself with the UK public in 1979 when ‘Silly Games’ made her the first British black female to reach number one in the UK Charts. In the 80s Janet lit up the small screen as Angel in Channel 4’s sit-com ‘No Problem’. Covering Minnie Ripperton’s ‘Loving You’ propelled Janet Kay to stardom. Carroll Thompson’s hard work came to fruition in 1981 when she also topped the reggae charts twice firstly with ‘I’m Sorry’ then ‘Simply In Love’ which saw her pick up various awards for her contribution to black music.
