Der mit dem Hans-Thoma-Preis 2023 prämierte Künstler Marcel van Eeden hat sich mit der Reise des Malers in die Niederlande und dessen Nähe zum antisemitischen Gedankengut des Schriftstellers Julius Langbehn auseinandergesetzt. Die daraus gewonnenen Erkenntnisse bilden den Ausgangspunkt für die grafischen Arbeiten, die in van Eedens Buch präsentiert werden.

Mit dem begleitenden Katalog zur diesjährigen MOMENTA Biennale de l’image werfen wir erneut einen Blick nach Kanada. Unter dem Titel Masquerades: Drawn to Metamorphosis werden Projekte von dreiundzwanzig internationalen Künstler*innen gezeigt, die sich mit Themen wie Transformation, Mimikry und Mutation beschäftigen.

Einen weiteren Schwerpunkt unseres Programms bilden wie gewohnt junge malerische Positionen, wie die von Willehad Eilers aka Wayne Horse, Christian Hellmich und Andreas Chwatal. Die LUDWIGGALERIE Schloss Oberhausen entführt uns mit einem Ausstellungskatalog zu den Illustrationen von Michael Endes Büchern in die fantastische Welt von Jim Knopf, Bastian und Momo.

Großartige Fotokunst kommt unter anderem von Sebastian Sabal-Bruce, Doug Fogelson, Pascal Haas, Marius Svaleng Andresen und Piet Niemann. Wir freuen uns darauf, diese und weitere Titel im Herbst auf der Paris Photo vorzustellen.

We are delighted to present our Fall Program, again featuring a wide array of exciting publications from the fields of art, photography, and culture.

A unique collection by the Berliner Schaubühne theater compiles poster campaigns of the last few years featuring work by the renowned artists Christian Jankowski, John Bock, Olaf Nicolai, Katharina Sieverding, and Monica Bonvicini.

Artist Marcel van Eeden, winner of the 2023 Hans Thoma Prize, explored Thoma’s travels to the Netherlands and his exposure to the anti-Semitic ideology of the author Julius Langbehn. His findings provide the starting point for the graphic works presented in this book.

With the catalogue published to coincide with this year’s MOMENTA Biennale de l’image, we again turn our gaze to Canada. Projects by twenty-three international artists are shown under the title of Masquerades: Drawn to Metamorphosis, all of which explore topics such as transformation, mimicry, and mutation.

As always, another area of focus in our program is the work of young artists such as Willehad Eilers aka Wayne Horse, Christian Hellmich, and Andreas Chwatal. Meanwhile, the LUDWIGGALERIE Schloss Oberhausen whisks us away into the fantasy world of Jim Knopf, Bastian, and Momo with an exhibition catalogue to accompany the illustrations of Michael Ende’s books.

Then there’s stunning photographic art from Sebastian SabalBruce, Doug Fogelson, Pascal Haas, Marius Svaleng Andresen, and Piet Niemann, to name but a few. We are hugely looking forward to showcasing these titles and more at Paris Photo in the fall.

The Schaubühne Berlin is one of the foremost German-language theaters and has a unique artistic profile. Between 2018 and 2022, renowned artists Christian Jankowski, John Bock, Olaf Nicolai, Katharina Sieverding, and Monica Bonvicini designed a series of posters for the theater. The outcome: striking two-dimensional artworks that, when inserted into Berlin’s cityscape, created a kind of temporary urban exhibition. The array of artistic executions in the poster campaigns ranges from humorously grotesque scenes or fanciful tableaux featuring members of the ensemble to purely conceptual approaches devoid of any text or imagery, to posters that use round cut-outs to capitalize on their ever-changing impact in the urban space. This publication brings together for the first time all of the designs alongside accompanying texts and interviews.

Das Künstlerbuch Marcel van Eeden – 1898 entsteht anlässlich des Hans-Thoma-Preises 2023. Der Preisträger, Marcel van Eeden (* 1965), nimmt Thomas kaum bekannte Reise in die Niederlande von 1898 zum Gegenstand. Er reflektiert Thomas Auseinandersetzung mit Rembrandt van Rijn oder Paulus Potter – unter dem problematischen Einfluss des Kulturtheoretikers Julius Langbehn. Mit Gummidrucken von den bereisten Orten, aufgenommen in der Gegenwart, und historischen Zitaten von Thoma bzw. Langbehn entsteht ein vielschichtiges, kritisches Bild völkisch-nationaler Kulturbetrachtung.

The artist book Marcel van Eeden – 1898 is being published to coincide with the Hans Thoma Prize 2023. The prizewinner, Marcel van Eeden (b. 1965), explores Thoma’s littleknown travels to the Netherlands in 1898. He reflects on Thoma’s analysis of Rembrandt van Rijn or Paulus Potter, under the problematic influence of the cultural theorist Julius Langbehn. Present-day gum bichromate images of the places Thoma visited alongside historical quotes by Thoma and Langbehn result in a multifaceted, critical consideration of nationalistic views on culture.

Its goal is to shed light on the dynamics of visibility and invisibility defining the relationships between self and other, between humans and their environment, whether that environment is vegetal, animal, or technological. This publication assembles the descriptions of the exhibitions, an essay by Anne Anlin Cheng on the metamorphic potential of “skin consciousness,” an original portfolio of photographs by Chris Curreri, and an essay by the curator Ji-Yoon Han that reflects on the notion of the image through the prism of the Biennale’s theme.

Paco Knöller – Unter mir der Himmel (Beneath Me, the Sky) is being published to accompany the exhibition of the same name at the Hilti Art Foundation’s museum space in Vaduz, Liechtenstein. The exhibition features numerous works by the artist (b. 1950) dating from the 1980s to the present day. The works, created exclusively with oil pastels, examine various aspects of human existence in the context of human and natural history. Photographs of the installation provide direct insight into the exhibition, which also features sculptures from the Hilti Art Foundation’s collection.

The notion of motherhood and how to define it is hugely complex. Scarcely another concept has provoked a more diverse range of associations, emotions, and stereotypes, nor shifted so frequently throughout the history of humankind. Today, the topic is more political than ever.

This book provides an overview of how contemporary art reflects perceptions of motherhood and mothering. Fourteen examples illuminate various aspects from a biological, psychological, and social perspective. Another topic that is included in these considerations is that of nonmotherhood. In addition, the ambivalent attitude of the arts and cultural sector toward artists who decide to become mothers is examined, as is the artistic exploration of motherhood in terms that go beyond heteronormative, cis-gendered relationships.

Tanz auf der Klinge (Dance on a Knife’s Edge) is the first monograph by the artist Willehad Eilers aka Wayne Horse (b. 1981). This publication features works created between 2018 and 2023, presenting the many facets that make up the artist’s universe—from blind drawing to graffiti and monumental oil paintings. Eiler’s visual world, made up of grotesquely lewd scenes, reveals a generous portion of humor while exploring the darkest depths of society. Studio images and photographs from Eiler’s everyday life provide shed light on his creative process. This visual journey is accompanied by interviews with the artist, brief explanatory texts, and the notes that in many cases served as the starting points for the works depicted here.

Andreas Chwatal. Ink Wash on Paper versammelt die dreihundert wichtigsten Papierarbeiten des Münchner Künstlers (*1982) der letzten siebzehn Jahre. Die bisweilen minutiös gezeichneten Arbeiten sind Teil einer fortlaufenden, romanhaften Bilderzählung, die hier erstmals vollständig präsentiert wird.

Durch einen Textteil mit kunsthistorischer Analyse, ein Künstlerinterview sowie eine ausführliche Übersicht aller Arbeiten besitzt die Erstmonografie den Charakter eines Werkverzeichnisses. Zugleich wird die in der Gegenwartskunst einzigartige Erzähl- und Zählweise der lavierten Pinselzeichnungen beleuchtet.

Andreas Chwatal: Ink Wash on Paper brings together 300 of the most important works on paper by the Munich-based artist (b. 1982) from over the last seventeen years. The artworks, some of them drawn in minute detail, are part of a continuous, fictitious pictorial narrative, which is presented in full for the first time here.

With a text section featuring art-historical analysis, an interview with the artist, and a comprehensive overview of all works, this first monograph is like a catalogue raisonné of Chwatal’s oeuvre. At the same time, it illuminates the narrative style and method of ink wash drawing, which is highly distinctive in contemporary art.

In her art, Ines Doujak (b. 1959) examines complex interrelationships and goes directly to the heart of explosive issues. From a queer-feminist perspective, she unsparingly analyzes the mechanisms and ramifications of the neoliberal market economy and the relationship between production and consumption, capital and exploitation, colonialism and neocolonial rule, racism and gender roles.

For the very first time, Nevertheless provides an overview of Doujak’s artistic oeuvre from the last thirty years, encompassing a multitude of different media. The extensive plate section is supplemented by autobiographical fragments and quotations relating to the pictures.

Charakteristisch für die Malerei von Christian Hellmich (* 1977) ist der gestisch-abstrakte Malduktus und die asymmetrische Anordnung von Farbflächen, aus der er eine geometrische, rasterartige Aufgliederung des Bildraums entwickelt. Eine einheitliche Perspektive wird vermieden, Räume durchdringen sich gegenseitig, Bildebenen erscheinen simultan. Für die fragmentarisch zusammengefügten Motive greift Hellmich auf sein Bildarchiv zurück, das aus Fotos, Zeitungsausschnitten, Internetquellen, Postkarten u. Ä. besteht. Der gesellschaftliche Umgang mit Bildern in unserem heutigen mediatisierten Zeitalter prägt dabei sein Vorgehen. Verweise auf architektonische Konstruktionen und comichafte Formen werden assoziiert, ohne dass sie jedoch klar zuzuordnen sind und somit die Neugier auf vermeintliche Entschlüsselung wecken.

Christian Hellmich (b. 1977) creates works characterized by gestural abstraction and the asymmetrical arrangement of planes of color, which are used to develop a kind of geometric grid pattern that dissects the pictorial space. This avoids any uniform perspective so that spaces penetrate into one another, and various image planes appear simultaneously. The fragments of motifs that Hellmich assembles are taken from his extensive image archive of photographs, magazine cuttings, Internet sources, postcards, and more. His approach is shaped by society’s handling of images in today’s mediatized age. References to architectural structures and comic-like shapes trigger associations without being clearly categorizable, thus rousing interest in their assumed decryption.

His enigmatic human figures seated in enraptured pictorial settings are not geared toward capturing a subjective, distinct portrayal, but toward the crystallization of an unmistakable humanlike allegory. His characters, in their at once disconcerting and graceful silhouettes, fall out of time and history as symbolic markers of a human state of mind. Neumann does not intend to narrate any incidents; he rather traces emotional human qualities, confronting the viewer with his own desires, fears, obsessions, and phantasms.

Simone Lucas and Sven Kroner (both born in 1973) studied painting together at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf. From the outset, the two have worked figuratively, often on largeformat canvases.

Simone Lucas creates complex worlds with no separation between the outside and the inside. Her surrealist-looking pictures are striking in their complexity, their surprising motifs, and their painterly opulence.

Sven Kroner’s extensive work begins with depictions of nature. Since 2013, he has increasingly turned to painting subtle views of interiors. Kroner’s pictures often have a dystopian tinge since they show the traces of human action but without any people.

Einhoff’s pieces, which employ a wide range of painting and drawing techniques, all revolve around the central image of humankind and its ambivalent and fragile nature. Anonymous traces of figures, facial contours, and torn-off fragments of bodies oscillate between concentration and dissolution and speak to an image of humankind that is subject to constant change. In their alienation, displacement, and fragmentation, in their isolated juxtaposition, his figures search for their sacrosanct state of being.

Das Fotobuch No Fat Poetry ist ein demokratisches Match zwischen Text und Bild, ohne Unteroder Überordnung. Die neuen Medien kommunizieren inzwischen Bilder in ungeahntem Ausmaß. Das heißt, Bilder sind heute noch viel stärker abhängig von ihren Kontexten. Und in diesen Kontexten generieren sie Bedeutungen, die sich ändern können, je nachdem, wo die Bilder auftauchen oder auf wen sie treffen – hier auf Text und Typografie.

Auch die Herkunft der Texte ist demokratisch, und fast alle Texte sind recycelt (Samplings). Es handelt sich um O-Töne von Künstler*innen und Fotograf*innen, von der Straße oder aus der Fototheorie und Ästhetik. Und schließlich ist auch die Beteiligung der Fotograf*innen demokratisch, sie reicht von jungen bis zu arrivierten Fotograf*innen (z. B. Thomas Demand, Alex Prager, Jörg Sasse, Alec Soth, Josef Sudek, Jürgen Teller, Jeff Wall).

The photobook No Fat Poetry is a democratic marriage of image and text, without any subordination or superordination of either. Nowadays, new media communicates a hitherto unimagined quantity of images. This means that, today, images are far more dependent on their context, and it is within these contexts that they generate an importance that may change, depending on where the image appears or who or what the image is juxtaposed with—in this case, text and typography.

The origins of the texts are democratic too, and almost all of them are recycled (samplings). They are quotes by artists and photographers; they come from the street or from photographic theory or aesthetics. Ultimately, the involvement of the photographers is also democratic, including newcomers and established photographers alike (e.g., Thomas Demand, Alex Prager, Jörg Sasse, Alec Soth, Josef Sudek, Jürgen Teller, Jeff Wall).

The photographic series Endless Homecoming by Jan Kricke (b. 1977) presents a carefully composed sequence of landscape images which, uncoupled from any chronology, represent a journey beyond any discernible physical route. These are impressions of undefined locations and fleeting images of natural structures or plays of light that transpose the urban energy and speed of street photography to landscape photography in a unique way. This large-format collection is being published to coincide with the artist’s first museum exhibition in the Museum Künstlerkolonie at the Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt.

In Chemical Alterations 2012–2022 präsentiert Doug Fogelson (* 1970) eine Fotoserie, die die vielfältigen Auswirkungen des Klimawandels auf unserem Planeten widerspiegelt. Mit einem Verfahren, in dem traditionelle Landschaftsfotografien einem chemischen Bad aus giftigen Reinigungsmitteln ausgesetzt werden, um den analogen Originalfilm zu verändern, veranschaulicht Fogelson die oft unsichtbaren Veränderungen der Umwelt. Diese Veränderungen kulminieren in katastrophalen Ereignissen wie Bränden, Überschwemmungen, Dürren, immer stärkeren Stürmen und der allgemeinen globalen Erwärmung. Bilder von Naturräumen wie Berge, Wüsten, Vulkane, Dschungel, Ozeane, Flüsse und Wälder werden in einem Zustand des Wandels dargestellt. Durch die Bearbeitung des Films werden Spuren wie Blasen, Kristalle, Fingerabdrücke und Staub in die Bilder integriert, die sich an der Grenze zur Abstraktion befinden.

Chemical Alterations 2012–2022 presents a photographic series by Doug Fogelson (b. 1970) that reflects the range of impacts caused by climate change around the planet. Using a process that combines traditional landscape photography with a chemical bath of toxic cleaning products to alter the original analogue film, Fogelson illustrates what are often invisible changes to the environment. Such changes culminate as disastrous events like fire, flood, drought, increasingly powerful storms, and overall global warming. Images of natural spaces that include mountains, deserts, volcanoes, jungles, oceans, rivers, and forests become represented in a state of flux. Through the processing of the film, traces such as bubbles, crystals, fingerprints, and dust are integrated into the images, probing the borderline of abstraction.

Dadurch machen sie Stärke und zugleich Verwundbarkeit sichtbar, spiegeln die Unwägbarkeiten unserer Zeit. Der Rhythmus der Serie wird vom Zyklus der Jahreszeiten bestimmt, erkennbar in Licht, Kleidung und Natur.

Character Arc, the documentary photo series by Pascal Haas (b. 1976), features a collection of portraits of Berlin-based actors. The photos, taken between 2021 and 2023, depict the actors personally, in the park or on the street—outside of their roles, away from the stage and the set. The serene black-and-white analogue portraits show the artists as approachable, free from any artifice. In this way, the images reveal both their strength and their vulnerability, reflecting the uncertainties of the modern age. The rhythm of the series is based on the seasons, as can be discerned from the light, the clothes they are wearing, and the natural surroundings.

Der Fotograf Piet Niemann (* 1991) hat zwanzig Jahre nach der Expo 2000 in Hannover eine umfassende fotografische Bestandsaufnahme des Expo-Geländes vorgenommen. Nachhaltigkeit und die erfolgreiche Entwicklung des Ausstellungsgeländes in eine „Stadt der Zukunft“ werden, ähnlich wie bei den Olympischen Spielen, häufig von der Politik versprochen. Doch entspricht das der Realität? Zwanzig Jahre später ist es interessant, festzustellen, was von diesen oft vollmundigen Versprechungen geblieben und eingelöst worden ist – oder auch nicht. Piet Niemann hat sich vorgenommen, von sämtlichen Arealen der Expos eine fotografische Bestandsaufnahme vorzunehmen, jeweils zwanzig Jahre nach den Weltausstellungen. Erklärtes Ziel ist eine fotografische Arbeit, die stetig wächst, einen reflektierenden Blick auf die Vergangenheit ermöglicht und idealerweise Überlegungen anstößt zum verantwortungsvollen Handeln in der Zukunft.

Photographer Piet Niemann (b. 1991) revisited the Expo site and documented its current state in a comprehensive body of work, twenty years after the world fair took place. Sustainability and the successful development of the exhibition site into a “city of the future” are often promised by politicians—similar to the Olympics. But is this actually the case? Twenty years later, it is interesting to find out what has remained and been delivered from these often full-bodied promises—or not. Piet Niemann has planned to make a photographic observation of all Expo sites, twenty years after the world expositions took place. Thus, the declared goal is a documentary work that grows steadily, enables a reflective view of the past, and ideally initiates reflection on responsible action in the future.

In Life in the New, Marius Svaleng Andresen delves into the complexity of urban development and its impact on people, with the district of Novi Beograd, Belgrade, Serbia, as a backdrop. How does the relationship between people and architecture change as cities grow and become denser? Through interviews with the area's inhabitants and photographs that blend documentary and art, Life in the New explores what lies beyond the facade of the brutalist and socialist buildings of modernism.

Impressive architectural forms and complex geometries recede into the background to reveal everyday life in all its mundane glory: its little dramas, its melancholy, its discomforts, quirkiness, and humor. Every now and then, however, Andresen discovers moments of pure beauty, the fragile, unpremeditated poetry of the everyday that thrives amidst the formality of the architects’ grand visions.

Conversation with My Other Me ist ein Fotokunstbuch des in Berlin lebenden dänischen Fotografen René Riis (* 1967) mit einer Reihe von besonderen Multiphotograph-Porträts. In einem einmaligen und eigens dafür gebauten Spiegelkabinett werden einzigartige Porträts von unterschiedlichen Menschen eingefangen: eine Mischung aus Persönlichkeiten, wie zum Beispiel Tänzer*innen, Politiker*innen, Schauspieler*innen oder Sportler*innen sowie unbekannte Personen mit starker Ausstrahlung.

Das besondere an den Multiphotographs ist, dass man die porträtierte Person aus fünf unterschiedlichen Winkeln sieht. Dazu kommt, dass die Porträtierten vor den Spiegeln eine eigene und einmalige Dynamik mit sich selbst entwickeln. Denn es ist sehr ungewohnt, sich selbst aus so vielen Perspektiven auf einmal zu erleben.

Conversation with My Other Me is a photo art book by the Berlin-based Danish photographer René Riis (b. 1967) featuring a series of multi-photograph portraits.

A unique cabinet of mirrors created specifically for this purpose captures one-of-a-kind portraits of various individuals: a mixture of prominent public figures, among them dancers, politicians, actors, and sports personalities, as well as unknowns with a charismatic presence. What makes these multi-photographs so extraordinary is that the person is portrayed from five different angles. In addition, in front of the mirrors, the subjects develop a personal and unique dynamic with themselves. It is, after all, a highly unusual experience to see oneself from so many different perspectives simultaneously.

Zahlreiche Ausstellungen mit Beständen aus der umfangreichen Sammlung Ludwig konnten realisiert werden, ebenso wie Präsentationen zu Comic und Karikatur, zur Fotografie und den für das Ruhrgebiet so bedeutenden Landmarken.

The LUDWIGGALERIE Schloss Oberhausen is celebrating its 25th year and is presenting one of the patrons’ specialized collections to mark the occasion. For the first time, an extensive selection of Peter and Irene Ludwig’s exquisite and unique porcelain collection will be on display in Oberhausen. Over several decades, the Aachen-based art collectors assembled a collection of the finest Meissen porcelain and took particular joy in depicting a range of occupations. Today, this “white gold” is kept in Bamberg.
