MAYOR'S WELCOME
Bryce Ward Bryce Ward
Fairbanks North Star Borough Mayor
The Fairbanks North Star Borough is a caring community where neighbors support each other and where families grow and prosper in a safe and healthy environment. Please enjoy yourself whether you are here for a short time or choose to make this your home. If you are visiting, we hope that you will experience the warmth and hospitality of our community and return for many more visits. If you have chosen the Fairbanks North Star Borough as your home, we hope that you’ll enjoy all the events, programs, and opportunities that are available!
WELCOME TO FNSB PARKS & REC
Dear Community Members, Happy New Year! I hope that you were able to enjoy a safe and relaxing holiday with your loved ones! It’s hard to believe that another year has passed. I’m looking forward to the new year and the opportunities it brings. The Fairbanks North Star Borough has had some great programs and challenges, and we are happy that we can continue to serve our community. The needs of the community may have changed over the years, but the one constant is the love for our parks and recreation areas. From winter trails to ice rinks, from kick sledding to pools, from playgrounds to ice fishing, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Engaging in community activities allows individuals to connect with others with similar interests and builds social networks.
Bryce J. Ward Mayor Fairbanks North Star Borough
SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE
Brian Charlton Brian Charlton
FNSB Parks and Recreation Recreation Superintendent
Greetings! Whether you are new to our community or a long-time resident, it doesn’t take long to figure out that springtime in Fairbanks is filled with many activities. The light is returning, the trails are in their best condition, the promise of feeling the heat of the sun again is palpable. This is a great time of year to get outside to try new things and explore new places. Try taking a ski lesson; explore the outdoor skating at the Big Dipper, Tanana Lakes, or North Pole High School; adventure on some of the 20 trails included in the Trails Challenge, or make your own adventures. Of course, there are many indoor activities throughout our community for those cold days or those times when you just want to be inside. You can swim or ice skate nearly every day, get your steps in walking at the Big Dipper, take the littles to the Play Zone, or attend some of the many events at our facilities. We also offer activities geared just for older adults like community potlucks, exercise and aquacise classes, and senior outings. This edition of the Parks and Recreation Activity Guide showcases many of our events and activities happening this winter and spring but there are many more. To keep up to date on everything that is happening sign up for FLiP- “Fairbanks Loves its Parks”- where you will get a monthly e-newsletter and a code for a free drop-in pass on the second Wednesday of each month. For more information about any of our facilities or activities follow us on Facebook, check out parks.fnsb.gov, or give us a call at 459-1070.

PARTNERSHIP SPOTLIGHT Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks & Fairbanks North Star Parks and Recreation Partnership The Fairbanks North Star Borough Parks and Recreation Department has had a long, beneficial relationship with the Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks (NSCF) going all the way back to the formation of the Parks and Recreation Department in 1971. NSCF’s support of skiing in our community was born around the trails emanating from the University and their efforts grew with the local trail systems at Birch Hill Recreation Area. Today, NSCF remains a strong partner, ensuring world- class skiing opportunities continue to be a hallmark of Fairbanks. While the Borough owns the land and structures that are Birch Hill Recreation Area, it is the ski club that is largely responsible for those trails and structures being built. Two years before the formation of the Borough Parks and Recreation Department, in 1969, a local high school teacher by the name of Jim Whisenhant discovered a 200-acre parcel of land atop Birch Hill being leased to the City of Fairbanks by the State of Alaska with the requirement that some improvements be made. Mr. Whisenhant was the coach of the Lathrop ski team at the time and led an effort by the team to clear some ski trails through the property. During the winter of 1969, the value of having ski trails up on the hills was recognized, providing much milder conditions thanks to the inversions found during our local cold spells. As the Borough assumed parks and recreation powers, Whisenhant approached Mayor John Carlson who looked favorably upon the development and used local funds to construct a road and parking lot in 1972 at what would later become the Birch Hill Recreation Area. In the fall of 1972, enthusiasm for the new trails was increasing and the Lathrop students partnered with the Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks to expand the trails. The Borough signed a long-term lease with the State for the land and began negotiations to lease a portion of the Military lands where the White Bear loop now exists. Through their efforts, the Borough is now owner and host to the Birch Hill Recreation Area, home of the Jim Whisenhant Ski Trails (renamed for him in 1997).
All winter programs offered at Birch Hill are provided by the Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks, these include: Biathlon, Junior Nordics, Adult Lessons, FXC Junior Racing Program, and FXC Masters. The Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks is also responsible for all races held at Birch Hill, and for many community events throughout the year such as: The Golden Heart Trail Run, Candy Cane Romp, Ski Your Age, the Back Country Film Festival, and the Interior Youth Festival. This year for the first time ever FNSB Parks and Rec and the Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks partnered to put on an event: “The Ski Season Kick Off”. This was a fun way to partner with Parks and Rec in a more tangible sense and provide free ski lessons and skiing information to over 100 community members! The Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks is a non-profit that is primarily run by volunteers. Some of the biggest volunteer efforts happen behind the scenes. Thanks to the passionate and able members who put in countless hours of lobbying, grant writing, and fundraising, the ski dreams of Fairbanks is a reality! Since the early days of skiing in Fairbanks, the Nordic Ski Club has advocated for and maintained local ski trails. The Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks is solely responsible for all grooming and trail maintenance at Birch Hill Recreation Area and grooming is entirely funded by donations. These donations come in the form of individual donors and sponsors NSCF’s volunteer groups work hard to secure. If you are someone who enjoys skiing at Birch Hill and can contribute, every dollar helps! Through many decades of hard work, grant funding, donations, and local appropriations, the Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks has led the creation of over 40km of trails on Birch Hill. The NSCF is responsible for the trail grooming at Birch Hill, they host numerous local, state, and national competitions, and they provide ski lessons for all ages and abilities. Through donations and sponsorships, the NSCF spends around $500,000 per year to continue these efforts. The Fairbanks North Star Borough thanks the Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks for their long partnership and continued efforts to promote recreation in our community.
