From the Chair Dear Colleagues, Welcome to this edition of THE FOBISIAN that highlights many activities in which FOBISIA students have participated over the past months. With the end of this academic year fast approaching and the associated rush to complete the final preparations for the end of term, we should all try to take a few moments to reflect on the past year. To smile, to laugh, to frown and to enjoy the memories of another year gone, with the excitement of another year to come. As I think about the changes taking place in FOBISIA, from the introduction of more music opportunities encompassing a wider spread of talent, to the move of The Games to Thanyapura, Phuket, I am reminded that FOBISIA is a dynamic and highly rewarding organisation that brings much enjoyment to students and staff. The Biennial Teachers' Conference in Ho Chi Minh City is well underway with the number of participants growing steadily. Likewise, the registration form for the Annual Leadership Conference in Kuala Lumpur has been sent to Heads of School. I write this contribution to THE FOBISIAN as I sit in Bangkok airport, just having attended the June Executive Committee meeting, where we discussed a range of opportunities for the Federation. By far the most challenging issue is our ‘roots and branch’ review of the organisation. Dr Martin Coles was appointed to lead the review and he presented two detailed initial reports that included the thoughts of some current FOBISIA Heads, the leadership structure of other organisations, his own observations and best corporate practice that is relevant to FOBISIA. There will be a consultation survey sent to all FOBISIA Heads in late August that summaries many of the issues raised over the past years and, in some instances, suggests possible ways forward. The aim is to have a good first draft of recommendations to discuss at the Heads’ meeting in November. As always, I’d like to thank our FOBISIA colleagues working at FOBISIA HQ in Bangkok, whose continued focus on the needs of FOBISIA ensures we keep providing a wide range of activities for students in the region, with professional opportunities and challenges for staff. Wishing you a peaceful and relaxing holiday when it finally arrives, and I look forward to seeing you next academic year. FOBISIA HQ Update Dear Members, As the academic year comes to a close it’s a great time to reflect on all that has taken place within the FOBISIA membership. This year there were 79 FOBISIA events! These included 6 Music events, 27 Sports events, 6 Non-Sports events, and 6 Online events. There were 34 JAWS and/or Conference style CPD events. Then there were the Heads’ Conference & Business Meetings, the Bursar/Business Manager’s Conference as well as the Community Services Conference. Hosting requires a big commitment from staff and students, so a huge thank you to all who championed these events. The calendar for all events for the academic year 2017/18 is now listed on the FOBISIA website. Please refer to the website for the latest information. Next academic year we look forward to the Biennial FOBISIA Teachers' Conference at British Vietnamese International School Ho Chi Minh City. An amazing offering of CPD is planned for the three-day event from the 21st October through to the 22nd October. For more information please email: teacherconference@bvisvietnam.com, or go to the Home Page on the FOBISIA website to register. The planning for the Leadership Conference in November is also underway. The conference theme is “Health, Wealth & Self” and it will be held at the Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur. Wind Band Festival a Blast in Phuket By Paulette Wilkinson, Head of Performing Arts, British International School, Phuket
The FOBISIA Wind Band Festival was hosted by British International School, Phuket from 10-12 February 2017.
British International Schoool, Phuket (BISP) welcomed students and music teachers from St. Andrews International School Bangkok, Shrewsbury International School (Bangkok) and The British International School of Kuala Lumpur, to join 41 BISP Year 7 and 8 students, and one Year 6 student for a weekend of Wind Band music.
Thank you for all the help and musicianship offered by the visiting teachers.
All the students were embryonic players, some having only played for a few months, however at the end of the weekend the concert proved their true potential. The concert featured arrangements of Pomp & Circumstance, Suo Gan, Wild Thing, amongst others, and the students' favourite - YMCA. Our students have requested YMCA at every rehearsal since!
THE FOBISIAN
FOBISIA's Wind Band Festival was aimed at beginning students in Years 5 to 8 who had been learning for one or two years, although it also catered for more advanced students. The course consisted of sectional workshops, whole-group rehearsals and some additional musical activities to give the wind and brass players’ embouchures a rest!

Bromsgrove Hosts Biggest Drama Festival By Andrew Williams, Assistant Principal - Pastoral, Bromsgrove International School
The FOBISIA Drama Festival was hosted by Bromsgrove International School in Bangkok from 3-5 March 2017.

Bromsgrove, which included Thai dance, as well as street food and fireworks'.
The theme, 'Same, Same, But Different', reflected the host country, but also saw students work in the styles of five key theatre practitioners to perform some highly engaging and sophisticated work on the Sunday. Each company told the same Thai folk story, but they all used different techniques to explore the theme. As well as the usual Gala Dinner, the participants were treated to a wonderfully authentic Thai night at the grounds of

Kellett's Primary Performing Arts Carnival By Susanne Dixon, Music Curriculum Leader, Kellett School
The FOBISIA Primary Performing Arts Carnival was hosted by Kellet School , Hong Kong, on 24-26 March 2017. Kellett School was chosen as the host school for the FOBISIA Primary Performing Arts Carnival this year, and the event was held over the weekend of 24 – 26 March. The Carnival provided not only a fantastic opportunity, but also a great challenge for those students involved. Our students were joined by children from 12 other schools in South East Asia, and combined to make an orchestra and choir totaling 257 pupils!
Just seeing this amount of children on the stage together was impressive enough, but when they began playing music collectively, it was quite breathtaking. The progress made by each of the students involved was absolutely staggering, and this was facilitated through instrumental and choral specialist teachers sharing their skills in intense workshops and masterclasses. Every corner of both the Prep and Senior School campuses were alive with the sound of glorious music. This event was an awe-inspiring experience for all, and resulted in a truly magnificent concert consisting of some very demanding and complex music, that left the 800-strong audience completely spellbound!

Shanghai, Puxi Hosts Model United Nations The 2017 FOBISIA Model United Nations (MUN) was hosted by The British International School Shanghai, Puxi from 10-12 February. By Alena, Secretary General The British International School Shanghai, Puxi
conference in 2018, and wish the next Secretary General all the very best.
Press Team, The British International School Shanghai, Puxi
Being given the opportunity as Secretary General has been an incredibly memorable experience and the highlight of my MUN career. The three-day conference held this February allowed students from Malaysia and Shanghai, China to collaborate and debate over pressing topics faced in today’s modern society.
Thank you once again to all the schools that attended The British International School Shanghai, Puxi’s second annual MUN conference, it was unforgettable experience!
This MUN at The British International School Shanghai, Puxi’s was my first. The experience was definitely new and exciting. I was most surprised by how the conference proceeded, as it was nothing I imagined. Being Head of the Press Team was without a doubt an eyeopening experience. I was able to capture engaging moments during the heat of the debate. It was definitely impressive to see the varied emotions throughout the event as you can tell that all delegates were devoted to their tasks.
For some students it was their first conference, a stepping stone into hopefully a fruitful and exciting MUN career, whereas for others they took this opportunity to develop and share previous experiences. Watching and even occasionally participating in debate showed me how open minded everyone in this international community are and it gave me great pleasure to see so many students actively engaged in topics that tend to be discussed by politically active adults. During the three days, I believe almost everyone made the goal to make a difference to society in some way or another, as it is important for our generation to create changes for the both the present and the future. I cannot wait to attend the next
Participating in the MUN meant learning about issues that go on around the world. I was able to learn numerous factors on how countries handled economic and social issues, as well as Human Rights. Overall it was a great opportunity to be Head of the Press Team and to interact at such an important event. I feel as though I would like to be a delegate next year and take part in all the debates.

Environmental Conference in Kathmandu By Jenny Pinder, Geography Teacher, Eco Schools Coordinator & Y8B Mentor, The British School Kathmandu
The 2017 FOBISIA Student Environmental Conference was hosted by The British School Kathmandu from 23-25 March.
11
On 23 March 2017, 62 students and 12 teachers met up for the FOBISIA Student Environmental Conference in Kathmandu, Nepal. The main focus of the conference was "sustainable living in a fragile environment", so what better way to start than by a lecture from Good Earth Nepal. Good Earth Nepal has been a leading force in Nepal since the devastating earthquake in 2015, providing training for both volunteers and Nepalis on how to build earthquake-proof buildings from locally accessible materials. The pupils had a chance to learn the theory behind the construction process before their practical building workshop. Due to the location of the lecture they were also able to see some of the earthquake damage first hand.
point for future problem solving). As they returned to camp Dr. Prakash Bhave, a local air quality specialist, set up for his evening lecture on the realities of air pollution, not only in Kathmandu, but from all of the visiting schools' countries.
After the lecture, the group was transported up onto the ridge overlooking the Kathmandu Valley, their new camp for the next two nights. To gain an idea of what rapid, unplanned urbanisation looks like, the group trekked along the ridge to see the impact urban sprawl is having on Kathmandu. Water shortages, electricity issues, air pollution and poor waste management are the realities of a lack of urban planning (and a good discussion
The final day involved a visit to the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), as well as a tour of all of the projects that ICIMOD is working on in partnership with Himalayan communities; each of the schools involved also presented sustainable development projects from their home countries. Topics ranged from the importance of gender equality for sustainable development to cloud seeding in
After a good night's sleep in their tents and a hearty breakfast, the students took part in a carousel of activities including: designing sustainable smoke-free stoves for villagers, making solar waterbottle lights, creating plastic bottle airconditioning units and learning how to build earthquakeproof buildings. The structures that the students built impressed the Forestry Commission and so will now be left as a permanent feature for visitors to enjoy!

Primary Maths Competition Adds Up in KL By Gemma Silk, Extended Primary Leadership Team: Learning and Teaching, The Alice Smith School (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia)
The FOBISIA Primary Maths Competition was hosted by The Alice Smith School from 16-18 March, 2017. On Thursday 16 March, 32 schools, totalling 190 people, from across Asia arrived in Kuala Lumpur very excited for the Primary FOBISIA Maths Competition to begin. The competition was launched with an opening dinner where the host, The Alice Smith School, welcomed all the teams to the city and where the students were presented with their competition t-shirt, cap, water bottle and bag. On Friday morning, the students were very excited and eager for the competition to begin. They started with a fun morning at KLCC Park completing the maths trail. Students then returned to school where they had lunch and completed the written team challenge. The afternoon consisted of team challenges. On Friday evening, the teams went out for dinner at Megamall to celebrate a successful day and the teams enjoyed socialising with eachother while ten pin bowling.
practical challenge. The challenge was to make a rollercoaster as high and as long as possible with the resources they were given and they had the opportunity to trade points for additional resources. Finally, it was time for the awards ceremony to close the competition and then the celebration with a tasty BBQ and a party! All students worked together fantastically and were a pleasure to be with throughout the weekend of competitions. They represented their schools well and showed what amazing mathematicians they were. We now look forward to the 2018 competition in Brunei!
Saturday morning started with the students sitting their individual written paper, then the rest of the day was full of fun practical activities. The children’s faces were beaming as they moved from one practical to the next. After lunch was the big

Smooth Sailing in Pattaya, Thailand By David Walton, Varsity Sailing Coach, Bangkok Patana School
The FOBISIA Sailing Championships were held at the Royal Varuna Yacht Club in Pattaya, Thailand from 1-5 March, 2017. The increasingly popular sport of sailing took centre stage last week as the FOBISIA Sailing Championships took place at Royal Varuna Yacht Club in Pattaya, Thailand. This year’s event saw teams entered from Bangkok Patana School, Shrewsbury International School (Thailand) and Harrow International School Bangkok.
eight and 15 years of age compete against each other. Each placing counts as points and the aim is to have the lowest points at the end of ten races. For example, finishing first in all races has an overall score of 10—this would be the lowest score possible and therefore the sailor would finish in first overall.
Despite the fact that there were fewer schools competing this year, the competition has certainly developed and improved, which lead to an entertaining and challenging competition for all sailors. Sailing is a sport that holds a lower profile for many students compared to other sporting activities, so here’s a little competition guide for those of you wondering how it works…
This larger boat is designed for two adult sailors, a Helm and one crewmember. Due to the size of this boat, teams were made of four students; one helm and three crewmembers. These teams were made up of our older sailors and the event was open to students up to the age of 18. Again, in this event each team competed against each other. Each placing counting as points with the aim to have the lowest points at the end of ten races.
The competition is made up of three different events: Individual Optimist Sailing, Helm and Crew RS Vision Sailing and RS Quba Team Sailing. Each event has overall winners and the placing in each event then contributes to the overall scores to see who is crowned the FOBISIA Champions. OPTIMIST INDIVIDUAL RACES
Optimist boats are small, singlehanded sailing dinghies with one sail. In this event sailors between
RS VISION HELM & CREW EVENT
have one boat in first place and another two in fifth and sixth that is a losing combination. The racing gets exciting when the sailor occupying first place uses tactics to slow down boats from the other team to bring the fifth and sixth place boats back into the race. After much success across all events, the Patana Tigers took first place overall and were crowned the 2017 FOBISIA Champions, drawing to an end this academic years’ sailing schedule. Photos over page.
RS QUBA TEAM RACING
Team racing is probably the most exciting of all sailing events due to the tactics that teams can use to win a race. At FOBISIA each team had three boats that compete in a race against three boats from another school. The idea is that your team’s three boats finish in a better combination of positions that the other teams. It sounds simple…sail fast get to the finish line first, but in this race if you

By Paul Rotheram, Director of Sports and Activities, Shrewsbury International School The event was hosted at the Royal Varuna Yacht Club (RVYC) in Pattaya, Thailand where it has been hosted since its inception. The RVYC ran the event for the host school and were excellent. The accommodation is on site, the catering is always at the club house or beach café, the evening fun events were well run and great fun, the equipment was modern and well maintained, the sailing was safe and well organised. The format of the sailing competition was created in agreement with the Director of Sailing from the Yacht Club and the racing was officiated by the RVYC officials. The late addition of the Vision class was a success to the overall competition with the pupils racing on bigger boats than usual. The three classes of boats that the competition was organised around (i.e. Optimist, RS Quba team racing, and Vision), created lots of competition, plenty of time on the water sailing whilst testing even the most advanced competitors. After three days of racing the Vision and RS Quba competition was decided on the very last race – great fun for both spectators and competitors…overall winners were Bangkok Patana School.

Friendly Games (A-Red U13) By Marketing & Communications Department, The Alice Smith School
The FOBISIA A-Red U13 Friendly Games were hosted by The Alice Smith School in Kuala Lumpur from 8-12 March 2017. The “competitive but friendly games” is how teachers, parents and students described the A-Red U13 FOBISIA Games held at The Alice Smith School, Kuala Lumpur (KLASS) from Wednesday 8 to Sunday 12 March. The Alice Smith School were incredibly proud to host the games which saw four visiting schools attend from around South East Asia, including Bangkok Patana School, British International School Ho Chi Minh City, Nord Anglia International School Shanghai, Pudong and Taipei European School. With one school unable to attend, Alice Smith seized the opportunity to broaden the experience for their students, by entering an additional “KLASS Lions Development Team”, as well as their traditional U13 squad. All four sporting disciplines were held at the school’s Secondary Campus. The atmosphere was electric during the Thursday and Friday football and basketball competitions, with spectating students taking full advantage of the fantastic sporting performances on show during breaks from their studies.
19
The high quality competition continued into Saturday where students took advantage of the school's recently opened track and field complex to post some impressive times, distances and heights.
Secondary Campus. The students, teachers and parents from all schools created such a positive atmosphere it certainly inspired the young athletes to achieve some fantastic results.”
The new eight-lane synthetic athletic running track is certified by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), with Alice Smith being the first international school in Malaysia, and the third in the world, to receive this standard of certification. With the athletics session coming to a close, there was little time to cool off from the hot and humid conditions before the teams took to the pool. The students continued with maximum effort during a gripping final session, which saw a number of personal bests achieved. The spirit of the games continued into the evening at the celebratory gala dinner, with students from all schools enjoying an evening of awards, dancing and newly formed friendships. Director of Sport, Ian Ward, commented, “It has been an honour to host the games at our

The FOBISIA A-Blue U13 Friendly Games were hosted by Harrow International School Bangkok from 9 -13 March 2017. On 9 - 13 March 2017, Harrow International School Bangkok hosted the A-Blue U13 FOBISIA Games with schools visiting from Dulwich College Shanghai, Kellett School (Hong Kong), The British School Manila, Jerudong International School (Brunei) and Garden International School (Kuala Lumpur). It was an absolute pleasure hosting these wonderful games which saw fierce competition on the track, in the pool, on the court, and on the pitch, but most importantly, all schools truly followed the ethos and etiquette of the Friendly Games. All teams had clearly worked very hard in preparation and were all very hungry for success; it was fantastic to watch the drama of the competition unfold. It was as equally satisfying to see the students from all six schools engage and make friends with one another - one of the aspects of sport and indeed the Games which is so important. Thank you to all students, coaches and parents from all six schools for making the A-Blue U13 FOBISIA Games such an enjoyable event.

The FOBISIA B-Blue U13 Friendly Games were hosted by elc International School (Malaysia) from 16-20 March 2017. elc International School was delighted to host the B-Blue U13 FOBISIA Games, from Thursday 16 March to Sunday 19 March. elc welcomed three schools from across Asia for the event Dulwich College Suzhou (China), Seoul Foreign British School and the International School @ ParkCity (Malaysia). The festivities began on Thursday evening with a pleasant opening dinner on the shores of Lake Putrajaya. It was a nice opportunity for teams to mingle and relax before the games got into full swing. The Pullman Lakeside Hotel, Putrajaya served as a comfortable base for all teams during the Games. While undoubtedly the Games were friendly, it was equally pleasing to see the commitment of all the competitors taking part. This passion was on display right from the beginning of all the events, from students and supporters of all schools. The action kicked off on Friday with basketball at the elc Cyberjaya Campus, where most events would take place. Months of preparation from students certainly paid dividends, as we were treated to some tightly contested matches across the courts.
23
We returned to the elc Cyberjaya Campus on the Saturday, for what would be an action-packed day. Standards remained high as many continued to push their limits in the swimming pool. There was a brief interlude and chance to refuel before the football started. Unfortunately, with only a few games remaining, the weather took a turn for the worse, so the matches were forced to stop. Although, this did mean the remaining football matches would tantalisingly bring the Games to a conclusion the following day.

On Sunday, the festivities moved to the University Malaya Athletics Stadium. The high standards from many students continued for the track & field events. A particular highlight was the relay races, which gave everyone an opportunity to support their school. The relay events fittingly brought the athletics to a close. However, there was still the small matter of the football finals. All teams headed back to the elc Cyberjaya Campus, where we were treated to a nail biting finish with the final matches requiring penalty shoot-outs to settle things. It was a real pleasure to host the Games a final time in their current format, and we hope to be able to welcome athletes once again at some point in the future.
After welcome drinks by the pool at the Double Tree by Hilton on the opening evening, everyone enjoyed a great day of athletics and swimming at Chulalongkorn University. The football and basketball took place at a fantastic facility which boasted covered football pitches - most welcome at this time of year in Bangkok! There was no faulting the energy and motivation of the athletes, and their infectious enthusiasm helped create an atmosphere that lived up to the 'Friendly Games' tag. This was especially evident at the barbecue dinner and impromptu talent show that took place on Sunday evening at the school, and at the closing Gala Dinner, as new-found friends partied together.
