our experience Over the past few decades, sports architecture, especially soccer stadiums and other large sports venues, have evolved in accordance with the most modern concepts. When designing new sports complexes, the main objective is always to provide a better user experience for athletes and comfort for the public. FOCUS GROUP has allready collaborated with several international sports organizations like UEFA in EURO 2004 , FIFA on the FIFA WORLD CUP BRAZIL 2014 and the Olympic Committee at the Olympic Games RIO2016. FOCUS GROUP in consortium with a Brazilian office, won a major international architecture and urban competion for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, the Deodoro Olympic Park. The complex will house nine sports: equestrian, hockey, shooting, cross country, fencing, modern pentathlon, mountain bike, BMX and canoe slalom. The structures for equestrian competitions, sport shooting and field hockey, already in place, will be expanded and modernized. Among the new facilities include a park for extreme sports, which includes an aquatic area that plays strong current to practice slalom canoeing. The Slalom Canoeing Complex and the Arena Sports Pavilion have won two international awards, the IAKS / IOC Award and the IAKS / IPC Distinction.

FOCUS GROUP in consortium with a Brazilian office developed the complete project design of the new stadium Governador Plácido Castelo, also known as the Castelao stadium in Fortaleza, Ceara state capital in Brazil. This equipment, which resulted from the total refurbishment of an existing stadium already dated 1973, was designed to receive some of Mundial' 2014 games. With 27 meters high and four benches, it has a capacity for over 65.000 spectators, underground parking and an administrative building.

The new Benfica stadium was built to replace the old 1954 facility in time for its use in the Euro 2004 championships. Its construction (and demolition of the old stadium) were conducted in record time under a fast track design + build scheme, in which FOCUS GROUP was commissioned with the full MEP design. With a capacity for 65.000 spectators, the facility includes a swimming pool complex, a multi-sports pavilion, a retail area, services and admin offices and three indoor parking levels.

This inter-municipal facility was purpose built for the EURO 2004 championships. FOCUS GROUP was the designated engineer for the electrical, communications, safety and security, and gas network design in a team that had HOK as architects and WS Atkins as concept engineers. The 30.000 spectator stadium is integrated in a vast 225 ha complex, the Parque das Cidades, which includes an athletics track, training pitches and Algarve's central hospital.

mostaganem sport complex Sports . competion
FOCUS GROUP participated in an international tender for the development of a sports and Olympic complex for the city of Mostaganem in Algeria, which will include various sports equipment and leisure areas. It is, along with another candidate, in a shortlist for the final decision and is still waiting for the winner's result. The sports and Olympic complex includes the construction of a football stadium with a capacity of 30.000 covered seats in accordance with the rules of FIFA and an additional stadium with a capacity of 1.000 seats and running track. Integrated in this Olympic complex, the project also includes the construction of various sports equipment and support, such as Olympic pools, gyms, weight rooms, administrative and support services, cafeteria and parking for 200 places. The project includes a multi-sports pavilion with room for sporting events with a capacity for 3,000 spectators, and it is also planned

FOCUS GROUP was commissioned with the technical installations, water networks, sewage and fire of two pavilions and the complex of the Sport Lisboa e Benfica pools. Â With a capacity of 2400 seats, the first pavilion has a metal cover oval shaped, acoustically prepared to cancel the reflection of sound, leaking and releasing the same. Futsal, the roller hockey and basketball are the rules intended to use this complex. The second pavilion has metal cover in the form of parable and capacity for 1800 people. Handball and Volleyball are the rules intended to use this complex. The pools complex consists of three pools supported by two spas for adults and two for children. Architecturally planned to receive natural light, it provides a unique sense of relaxation in the city of Lisbon.

FOCUS GROUP provided a complete design service across all disciplines for the new stadium and training centre of Varzim Sport Club, lending to this new 6.000 spectators facility a strong identity and brand image. FOCUS GROUP developed the complete project for the design / build competition for this stadium in the framework of the African Nations Cup (CAN) 2010. The mission was conducted up to a pre-detail design stage and won first place in the competition, although the contract would eventually be awarded to others. With 20.000 spectators capacity, the facility includes an athletes training centre, public parking, two practice pitches and one artificial turf pitch with stands.

oeiras municipal stadium Sports . stadia hydraulic FOCUS GROUP was responsible for planning for water and sewage and fire fighting the Municipal Stadium in Oeiras. The overall project for the Oeiras Municipal Stadium involved the construction of countertops, support equipment and west side bench cover. Its development had as main concern the integration of the equipment in order to facilitate visibility and interaction between the Poets Park and the interior playground.

FOCUS GROUP was responsible for designing the original architecture, interior architecture, landscape architecture and civil engineering projects of a five-star hotel complex, comprising a hotel unit and several apartments located in Serra de Monchique. With the acquisition of the resort by Explorer Investments (but managed by the Macdonald Hotels & Resorts group), this complex has been refurbished to the image of the English hotel group, namely in the Spa area, in the restoration areas and also in some social areas of the complex.

FOCUS GROUP is currently developing the hotel design at Quinta do Paรงo da Serrana, a farm with a priceless patrimonial and natural value, formerly the home of Alexandre Alberto da Rocha de Serpa Pinto (1846-1900), a famous African explorer. With the intention of opening the farm to the public, the design aims the requalification of all the garden and access roads, as well as the parking, allowing the touristic exploitation of the all set. This farm with be revitalized by the creation of pedestrian and cycling path allowing the visitor to take full advantage of the unique atmosphere that the farm offers, with a peculiar vegetation, brought partially by the original land owner in its trips, where he tried to recreate in Portugal some of the vegetation that he found in the African continent.

FOCUS GROUP was invited to participate in a international competition to develop a tourist complex consisting of hotels, houses, their infrastructure and marina, in Beirut, Lebanon. This 5***** resort will be developed on a 42.700 m2 plot complemented by 85.000 m2 of landfill area conquered to the sea. It will be a unique resort in a unique location, composed of two hotels, conference centre, villas, bungalows and townhouses, a marina, swimming pools, two beaches and different leisure areas. It has been designed using the natural slope of the land in order to preserve the fantastic views granted by the site. Due to the instability that has occurred in the region (Syria), the project is suspended.

our experience OFFICES Designing offices means creating a good work environment. Architecture, lighting, ventilation and proper acoustics should facilitate the users’ day-to-day activities. Appropriate spatial architecture should guarantee not only necessary privacy for the user and noise control, but also better distribution of lighting and general visibility in the space. More than design offices, we should design spaces where user conditions and experiences are factors for satisfaction, comfort, well-being and efficiency.

FOCUS GROUP is developing in partnership with an Algerian architectural firm all projects for an office building with about 10.206 m2. The building is developed in two underground levels for parking, a mezzanine fot the common areas, the ground floor with reception areas and offices and three floors of offices. The top floor is developed in L-shaped, creating an elongated courtyard which allows natural light to all floors and creating a space whose landscape intervention promotes an area of relaxation and contemplation.

The new headquarters of Microsoft in Portugal occupy a 6.200 m2 building designed by FOCUS GROUP in the new Parque das Naçþes district of Lisbon, built for the EXPO 98. With four storeys above ground and two underground parking levels, the building was conceived for low energy consumption and a high indoor environmental quality, achieved to a large extent by the use of high efficiency solar protection and the judicious use of natural lighting strategies.

FOCUS GROUP provided the complete design services for the Elevo Group headquarters in Cape Verde's capital, Praia. The building is located in a new urban area of the city and has a total area of 1.500 m2 over four storeys plus a mezzanine. It houses the offices of the company and also a residential area for expatriated staff. The project brief foresees an expansion of two equivalent volumes in the adjacent plots.

FOCUS GROUP was responsible for the refurbishment of the existing building located in the cross between Alexandre Herculano Street and Liberdade Avenue, where in the past October, Maxmara Feminine Fashion Store was opened. The opening of this international store follows the last years trend of turning the Liberdade Avenue a luxury commercial site in Europe, promoting the immobiliary renewal in Lisbon.pasting. The project foresaw, beyond the building’s use dedicated to the Maxmara Store (Levels -1, 0 and 1st floor), the use of the upper floors to future offices and habitation purposes. The main changes to the existing building were essentially the installation of an elevator, service stairs suppression, reinforced pavements to increase the fire protection as well as antiseismic behavior. The proposal gave a new light and use to the building backyard. To that effect its level was increased through its use by the Maxmara Store, at the ground level.

In terms of main concept, we tried to provide this technical area with the conditions necessary for the proper operation of existing systems in it, adapting them to local conditions and enhancing the comfort conditions of future users.

FOCUS GROUP designed the electrical services for this office complex that currently houses Lisbon's judicial system. The complex includes a set of eight office buildings totaling 65.000 m2, an area for trade and five basements for parking with a capacity of 4000 seats. A 18-storey tower, located in the center of an indoor garden, is the most symbolic building of this new business area, whose office spaces are designed in modular open-space, giving them the highest possible occupation of flexibility.

PT.Pro - Management Services chose FOCUS GROUP for the preparation of all architectural and engineering projects involved in the renovation and conversion of an integrated warehouse building in the complex of CalhabĂŠ, in Coimbra, in a future Call Center of the PT group with installed capacity of 400 service centers and their respective areas of social and technical support. The high level of technical and creative requirement of the PT Group under the terms of the tender reference for this conversion made FOCUS GROUP the right choice for their development.

FOCUS GROUP was responsible for projects of technical facilities of the new office buildings of ANA Aeroportos de Portugal in Lisbon. This complex consisted of three buildings connected to each other at the level of the floors but with different heights. The overall view that the air conditioning systems and ventilation are designed, framed on the premise of achieving high levels of comfort associated with ease of use and reduced operating costs of energy consumption and maintenance of the systems.

FOCUS GROUP developed the architecture projects, hydraulic and landscape architecture of the EDS headquarters building. Initially built with the aim of becoming headquarters of another company, the project of the building was abandoned and converted into an office complex which aimed to address the specific needs of the new tenant, a leading provider of information technology services. The project sought to create a set of different indoor / outdoor spaces with deep concerns in terms of sustainability.

our experience EDUCATION The buildings in this sector (schools, universities and student housing) are spaces mainly directed at children, adolescents and youth for a variety of shared experiences, playing an important role in their personal development. The design of this type of building should thus not only have an awareness of space and integration with the surrounding community, but should also be a symbol and benchmark providing its users physical well-being (through ergonomically adapted, sustainable and integrated solutions).

This student's residence in the capital city of Praia supports the adjacent College of Hospitality and Tourism of Cape Verde. With a capacity for 150 students and visiting staff, the project was promoted and financed by the Luxembourgish development agency Lux Dev. FOCUS GROUP was commissioned, following a restricted competition, to develop a complete design mission under a very tight schedule and stringent environmental guidelines, as well as strict CapEx and OpEx criteria, all of which it successfully met.

This education centre is composed of three interconnected buildings, two of which house the class and activity rooms and the third one the gymnasium. The centre has been designed for 450 students in the primary cycle, for which 18 classrooms are provided, and 150 pre-school children distributed through 6 activity rooms. FOCUS GROUP performed the complete design of this facility.

FOCUS GROUP won the contest and developed the projects of MEP specialties for the new kindergaten and primary school Visconde de Juromenha, for the Municipality of Sintra. The school consists of three interconnected buildings, including classrooms of the 1st Cycle and for the kindergaten, rooms for small group activities, gyms, administrative services and circulations. In addition to these services, FOCUS GROUP also provided the landscaping design.

our experience HEALTH Designing projects in the health sector is limited by its complex needs, the specification of standards and efforts to constantly improve the quality of spaces. We base our projects on the WHO (World Health Organization) health concept, where “being healthy” also includes the hospital architecture and facilities in order to guarantee an environment that provides patients with spaces for rest, relaxation and well-being, thus helping in their treatment. When designing a hospital building, we focus not only on technical aspects, but also on human aspects.

FOCUS GROUP designed all HVAC and associated systems for this new hospital, developed under a Public-Private Partnership scheme. With a total construction cost of 120 million Euros, for a total investment of almost 800 million, the facility has 150.000 m2 of total built area, with 709 beds, nine operating theatres and 59 consultation rooms. This hospital serves a population of approximately one million people.

In business since 1947, this clinic provides medical and surgical services in the field of Ophthalmology and envisages providing health care eye care to patients who seek it in the private activities of scope. It is defined for several years as a Medical Eye Clinic and Surgical Outpatient regime.

The continuing care units contribute to the management of hospital discharges of acute patients, allowing the use of these hospital beds for other types of patients. Also aimed at providing care to prevent and slow the worsening of the situation of dependence and to promote rehabilitation, clinical stabilization and promoting the independence of users.

Having started its activity in 1985, the Santarém Hospital now has a capacity of 414 beds, of which 132 are assigned to the medical area, 160 to surgery, 20 of psychiatry and mental health, 85 of the women's department and the child and 6 to the intensive care unit. The institution is also equipped with all major medical and surgical specialties, serving a population of approximately 192.000 inhabitants. The Hospital has a total construction area of 48.000 m2 and a building area of 43.075 m2. FOCUS GROUP developed all projects of technical facilities.

This new hospital to be built in system of public-private partnership (PPP) with the consortium "Scale Cascais", it had 270 beds with medical-surgical emergency, maternity, intensive care unit, among other facilities. It also included several outdoor car parks for visitors, internal staff and emergency service.

The headquarters building of the mission and housing is a dwelling of Avenida Gago Coutinho, target of extensive refurbishment. The intervention kept facades and coverage as the original design, making the interior a modern and welcoming space.

FOCUS GROUP won the contest and developed the architecture projects, planning and urban design, hydraulic and technical facilities of a housing development of Pedra Badejo in Sta. Cruz, on Santiago Island. This social housing development is part of the "Casa para Todos" program sponsored and financed by the portuguese Government and implemented by the Cape Verdian Ministry of Decentralization, Housing and Planning. The program will see the construction of a total of circa 4.000 dwellings in the archipelago. The complex already built includes 110 units as well as commercial and social spaces, such as a community centrer, a kindergarten, an amphitheatre, a leisure area and a children's play ground, integrated in a 14.900 m2 plot.

The complex is already built, and consists of 52 fires typologies T2 and T3, implanted in a land of about 3,800 m2, distributed in two residential blocks in band, each with its own vegetable garden. Privacy is ensured by laying the yards at different levels.

FOCUS GROUP designed for a private client the architectural projects for the remodeling of a residential building located in Almirante Reis in Lisbon. The building consists of basement (parking), and six floors above ground. It has a shop on the ground floor and 9 parking spaces. The remaining typologies are divided into 1 T1, 4 T2, 4 T3, 1 T2 + 1 and 1 T3 + 1. It was a project that consisted essentially in the remodeling of the interior and maintenance of the exterior façade, adapting it to the needs of the housing market.

FOCUS GROUP has designed for a private client the architectural projects for the remodeling of a residential building located in the Graça area of Lisbon. The building consists of basement (parking), ground level, 1st floor, 2nd floor (with a T2 and a T3 per floor) and attic (two T1). During the requalification process, an elevator was inserted to facilitate movement between floors. Particular care was taken in maintaining the façade and the original language of the building, and only a conservation intervention was carried out.

FOCUS GROUP was invited by a private client to participate in a competition for a concept design of a housing complex in Beirut, Lebanon. Taking advantage of the terrain slope, the three types of units of this residential complex on the Beirut coast - townhouses, villas and apartments - were clustered in such a way as to ensure great views of the city and / or the sea. Large balconies, terraces and interior patios enhance the contact with the surrounding environment.

FOCUS GROUP developed the architectural design for a residential building to be located in Palmarejo Grande, in Praia. Located in a city expansion area, the project comprises a residential building on 5 levels with various types of T1, T2 and T3 (some duplex) and parking in the basement. Taking into account the various conditions it was decided to create a strong appealing image, but simply reading. In this sense it was decided to create balconies in strong colors, which simultaneously serve as shade and exceptional elements and facade animation.

The starting point for the design of this project included the construction of 50 apartments divided into T2 and T3. A difficult plot with a great slope, where the urbanity solution created a square as neighborhood core, showing the shopping facilities and protecting housing.

FOCUS GROUP participated in the Architectural Public Tender for Bairro da Boavista, promoted by Lisbon City Hall, where it was shortlisted as one of the five classified, having received an Honourable Mention. The tender stipulated the replacement of the current masonry district by a new district of social housing but characterised by a great architectural quality and optimal ecological performance, in a challenge of compromises between cost control, spatial quality and its suitability to the specific social context. The proposed buildings are multi-family structures with up to 4 floors, with 10 housing units of various types (T1, T2, T3 and T4) and with attached garden plots.

The project consisted of 280 dwellings, commercial spaces, 1 room condominium and many other equipment: A Squad of the National Police, a sports court and a sports ground in the sand. All these spaces would be integrated with landscaping that included walking routes, accommodation and recreational areas with playgrounds and all access routes considered essential for the proper functioning of the whole.

An institutional building is, by definition, a public space geared to the public. When designing these spaces, we always keep certain assumptions in mind. Recognizing the building in an intrinsic manner, with the accessibilities and ease in reading the building itself, coupled with a suitable architectural concept, make these types of iconic buildings representative of a culture, society and population. The care and the importance of energy efficiency, the use of resources in a responsible manner, without however disregarding the needs of these buildings, are the great challenge.

Â This historic building, which has undergone a profound adaptation and remodeling, had a project that aimed not only to promote literature and human rights, as well as the revitalization of the site.

FOCUS GROUP provided the architectural and MEP design services for this penitentiary facility has a capacity for 610 inmates distributed through 48 wards and 74 individual cells. It is also provided with solitary confinement areas, high security detention zones, living areas, barber shop, interview rooms, workshops, kitchen, laundry, thermal plant, a multi-purpose room, a gym and two court yards.

FOCUS GROUP took part in a design competition for a theater in Ponte de Lima, where he was 3rd place. Â The building came naturally, parallel to the road, keeping a comfortable distance that would allow an unobstructed circulation and the creation of a "filter" between surrounding area and built area. Â The proposed building for the Concert Hall would consist of two simple volumes and different: the first containing the "Public Area" (access, foyer, cafeteria, etc.); the second containing the "Performance Area" (composed by the room itself and all technical areas of support).

FOCUS GROUP won the competition and is currently developing the engineering design of the Vila Verde Complex, run by the Sintra Municipality. Three divisions of the municipality will be installed here, occupying the existing buildings and also new built buildings for the cantina and gas station / equipment parking (DPGM). The functional program proposes the settling in this facility of office areas, workshops, warehouses, equipment parking, gas station, vestiaries and a cantina with no food preparation.

FOCUS GROUP is developing projects for the Centre de Loisirs et de Services Kolea, in algeria, a space for commerce, services and leisure. The concept of this building is intended to create a new center / structuring pole proximity to existing urban neighborhoods. It is an innovative concept of an integrated multifunctional complex, which will act as a cultural and leisure center with shops and local services in addition to sports facilities like swimming pool and baths. It will also include restoration of areas with different themed restaurants ranging from the traditional cuisine to fastfood complementing the offer of the complex.

FOCUS GROUP developed several landscape projects supermarkets in Portugal for the well know German retail network – ALDI. These projects focused on simplicity and efficiency, a trademark of this German brand. The overall layout of theses supermarkets fits to a standard for all the European shops that are adapted to each countries legislation. The surrounding spaces are no exception and all the layout fittings are predefined, as well as all the materials and solutions. ALDI conceptions are driven by low cost constructions and high durability of the solutions.

FOCUS GROUP is developing the Vasco da Gama NDE Plan, in a 32 ha area east of Albufeira, Portugal – the first theme park opening in Portugal. Based on the Portuguese discovery period, this park will be structured in several thematic zones focused on the African continent, Middle East, Brasil and India. This will be a reference project at the national level, not only because it’s unique, but also due it’s strategic importance for the tourism development and for employment. At the Plan level, the idea is to adapt the theme park masterplan to the local conditions and regulations, respecting the natural patrimony along the creek, and promoting an adequate landscape integration in Albufeira urban matrix. Apart from the park itself, the Detail Plan will also focus in the surrounding support areas, such as parking, access roads and future expansion areas on a study area of about 285 ha.

FOCUS GROUP was invited to collaborate on consulting in the development of Theme Park Galaxy Park, located in central Portugal in Vila Nova da Barquinha, and that was the first theme park to be fully licensed in Portugal, waiting only Community funding to be built. It is a complex with 60 hectares of which are part of a Theme Park about 25 ha, a shopping center with around 20.000 m2 of GLA and a five-star hotel with about 180 beds. The theme park is organized into five thematic areas dedicated to Portugal and its history, through medieval times to the history of the discoveries by its nineteenth-century rural life, exploring further on the pombalino legacy ending in Portugal's future. It is a diverse complex, with various complementary competencies that will certainly be a reference in the leisure and recreational offer of the region and the country.

Torres Novas Retail Park develops itself along 16.200 m2 and was opened to the public in 2008. These commercial space include not only free public parking but also leisure areas such as playgrounds, in order to attract families making shopping a more comfortable experience. In our designs Retail Parks are extensions of the urban shopping areas, integrated in the same atmosphere.

FOCUS GROUP developed the landscaping of several new Carrefour malls all over the country. Integrating a multidisciplinary team led by WEBER a multinational engineering firm, all the green spaces layout was orientated in order to integrate all the buildings, minimizing the maintenance costs, not forgetting safety and comfort. The plants and paving materials were adapted to the characteristics of each region, as the main principles that led the design, contributing to an individual identity of each mall perfectly integrated in the surrounding landscape. With these projects, FOCUS GROUP consolidated it’s experience in the commercial space design, combining the specific requirements of shopping malls, with innovative sustainable solutions. FOCUS GROUP developed along the last years, almost one hundred landscape architecture projects for the worlds renewed supermarket brand - Intermarché. Besides the functional and technical questions related to such commercial spaces, FOCUS group designs also bring pleasant and comfortable green spaces surrounding the supermarkets. The Intermarché Villa is one of the first concept of the kind in Portugal including not only the intermarché Supermarket but also the auto maintenance centre Roady and the bricolage BricoMarché, as well as a gas station.

Opened in September 2005, the Forum Viseu is seen as an awareness center, reflecting an urban, modern space where everything happens. Forum Viseu is constituted by two independent urban blocks, interconnected by footbridges which ensure the connection in the upper levels. There is also a free car park with capacity for 800 seats.

FOCUS GROUP developed the landscape design plan for Quinta das Nascentes, an old agricultural farm with 3,5 ha located in Montijo city, where a new Garden Museum for Jorge Peixinho will take place, a famous portuguese contemporary music composer. With an existing building now converted into a museology space, the design aimed for the environmental and landscape valorization, taking also in consideration the recreational and leisure aspects, seeking for the continuity of the proposed museum outdoors. In this way, the park has several recreational spaces related to music, where the biophysical functions were also kept.

The goal was to consolidate the strategic orientation of the Soft Mobility Plan, through a detail design of 9 km of cycle paths, where the path layout types and associated signage were defined.

This design aimed the regeneration and requalification of the urban road in the proximity of the Souselo’s EB 2/3 school, along an area of 10.338 m2 Several design approaches were tried out in order to transform roads into urban spaces, returning the sustainable and desirable urban quality to the village, contradicting the existing situation where only the car circulation is enhanced.

FOCUS GROUP was responsible for the requalification design of the 25 ha Ludo Riverfront Park at Faro’s municipality, a Polis Litoral Ria Formosa promotion. A pedestrian footpath network was created, with a set of scenic tracks including a bird observatory, for the observation of avifauna associated with the sweet water meadows, as well as recreational areas orientated for environmental actions and leisure and recreational areas. The landscape dynamics interpretation was another objective of the design, with the creation of a set of pedestrian and cycle tracks, with rest areas along them for observing purposes.

The Santa Luzia – Pedras d’El Rei Riverside promenade design, aimed the public space requalification, and the creation of new leisure areas that allow a new relationship with Ria Formosa. Near the Pedras D’El Rei village a small stone coble plaza was proposed, protected by trees and herbaceous vegetation. Along the promenade a new road profile was created, changing also the sidewalks, allowing the creation of a cycle path in colored slurry. This intervention also allowed the parking layout enabling the creation of a green alley. All the promenade of equipped with urban furniture, such as benches, paper trays and bicycle stands to facilitate leisure and recreational activities.

The urban renewal of the central streets of Carregal do Sal developed along more that 3,4 km main roads of the village center, with the objective of enhancing the mobility conditions of the village center, where the majority of the urban function occur. The design objectives were the improvement of the accessibility to jobs, schools, commerce and service areas by the use of more sustainable transportation, and also the improvement of air quality, noise reduction and road safety, mostly in what concerns access to residential areas, pedestrian and cyclist circulation and access to urban facilities .

The construction of Vagos’s waterfront park as already began. The contract set by POLIS Ria de Aveiro, aims the requalification of an extensive existing garden and the recovery of a traditional boat dockland along the river Boco in Vagos. The main goal behind the “Thematic Garden” of Vagos Waterfront Park is the creation of an 22 hectare open air eco museum dedicated to the riverside green corridors. Apart from the environmental approach, recreational areas will also be created and orientated towards environment educational activities. This project also includes the recovery of a traditional boat dockland in Folsas Novas, an important dock along the river Boco. Built in the 50’s in brick masonry, this dock will be fully recovered by the use of traditional construction techniques and natural engineering solutions.

FOCUS GROUP was responsible for the preparation of the Riverside Park redevelopment projects of Faro, a project awarded to the group following their victory in an open competition organized by the Society Polis Litoral Ria Formosa. Â Inaugurated in 2014, the first phase of Riverside Park comprises an area of leisure and recreation on the edge of Ria Formosa, made up of bike lanes roads, walking paths, an observatory of birds and an outdoor amphitheater for 250 people.

This equipment of the Association of Municipalities of Dão Lafões, the largest of its kind in the country, will connect the municipalities of Viseu, Tondela and Santa Comba Dão, occupying the disabled rail extension Dão, a project budgeted at close to five million euros.

FOCUS group developed the urban renewal project for São Sebastião, at the urban centre of Lagos, renewing pavings, water and sewer infrastructure, urban furniture and landscaping in order to solve several mobility and accessibility problems within this old part of the city, integrated in a vast urban renewal program that Lagos municipality has been carrying out in order to create more functional public spaces that can promote the return of inhabitants to the old part of the city again.

Along the west coast of Venteira at the northern limit of Amadora, the Parque do Vento urban park holds a theme very much related to the characteristics of the location. Inspired by the windy conditions, this parks includes a set of themed spaces related with the wind in its variety of forms. The several themed gardens are organized in various independent terraces connected by pedestrian paths, contributing to a unique leisure experience. The hilly areas of the park will be forested, creating a new Mediterranean forest that promotes urban biodiversity.

FOCUS GROUP was responsible for the projects for the municipal pool of Castelo Branco, one the largest complex of pools in the country. Open since 2004, and installed in an area of 80 hectares, this Municipal Pool-Beach has 750 parking spaces, showers for about 1.000 people and 3.950 square meters of water with wave zone, water jets in lateral zones, a huge mushroom with shower and a large effect slide.

FOCUS GROUP participated in the competition of ideas for a campsite in Ponte de Lima. Among the main interventions, reference should be made to maintain the production of garden and a paved courtyard in the area adjoining the main house, acting as a reception and distribution space. It is also envisaged the creation of a restoration building and cafeteria with a seating area and pool of 250 m2. The zone dedicated to the "bungalows" would be located at the highest elevation area, taking advantage of an excellent system of views. In the lower area, with an essentially defined by the organization previously existing latticework structure, was the area for tents.

FOCUS GROUP is developing the Areal Gordo Urban Plan (PUAG) for the Faro Municipality through its urban planning and landscape design teams, assisted by the group’s MEP engineering resources. The new PUAG aims at providing the Faro Municipality with a new area that will respond to the growing demand for corporate activities and, at the same time, facilitate the relocation of existing units dispersed in rural areas, in urban peripheries, in degraded zones or in areas where the planned land use is in conflict with the current activities. The current plan thus aims at fostering the development of corporate activities in the framework of a properly managed urban soil policy, keeping in mind the safeguard of the remaining rural areas of the municipality. As a result of the studies that have been conducted, we formulated a model based on three main pillars – Articulation, Diversification and Expansion.

The overall objective of the urbanization plan of Boliqueime, part of the Faro municipality, is to develop a model of compactness and low density, prioritizing the circulation of pedestrians and cyclists, and allowing for the creation of new multi-functional urban spaces. These will be integrated in a network of high quality public spaces, anchored on a well structured and continuous ecological system which will contribute to a clear identification of the population with the territory where it lives, works and relaxes. The project also aims at the conciliation between agriculture uses and urban spaces, in a framework of sustainability and integration of the natural landscape in the urban landscape.

SĂŁo Pedro / Latada is a consolidated spontaneous urban sprawl, characterized by a low density occupation in a majority of self-built dwellings. None of the existing buildings have undergone planning permission and there is no formal road network. The existing streets are unpaved and bereft of sidewalks for the circulation of pedestrians. This plan is part of the requalification efforts that are taking place in the capital city, Praia, to tackle the significant number of spontaneous urban developments.

In order to contribute to the redevelopment of the Praia, the Municipality of Praia identified priority intervention in a neighborhood with many urban problems: the Bairro da Achadinha, one of the oldest of the capital. FOCUS GROUP developed the redevelopment projects. In this neighborhood, about 76% of the building is prior to 1990. In general, has serious urban problems such as the lack of spaces for road and pedestrian traffic, buildings with low levels of living conditions, with different needs in terms the basic infrastructure (drainage and sanitation), risk of flooding and landslides and security to its inhabitants.

FOCUS GROUP in partnership with the spanish cabinet JG Inginieros, carried out the analysis, revision and design validation for the new Cruise Terminal of Lisbon. FOCUS GROUP was also responsible for the supervision of the work. The new Cruise Terminal was inaugurated at the end of 2017. The planned intervention area is located on the riverfront of section between the Navy Dock and Railway Santa Apolonia Station, featuring a privileged central location in the city. The scope of the intervention included the analysis of project documentation in its functional, proposed building systems and compatibility between projects of various specialties always with a view to optimizing construction costs, operation and maintenance.

FOCUS GROUP was responsible for project review and management and supervision of the work of a luxury eco-resort in island of Principe sponsored by HBD, a company based in Portugal and is currently involved in several projects in SĂŁo Tome and Principe, in areas such as tourism, agriculture, social innovation and economic development. Open since 2017, the Sundy Praia resort is located near the Sundy fields in the northern part of the island and is the first of its kind. It stands out for its standard of luxury and hospitality that will set the standard for future projects on the island. Which is a highly challenging project aims to demonstrate through its simplicity that tourism can be sustainable in a place like the island of Principe. To achieve this objective was necessary to find imaginative solutions that prevent natural escalating costs that arise when you start construction on protected and remote locations.

The main focus of the intervention was the updating of some elements of the faรงade and of all interior space in accordance with the international standards and image of the brand. This square will be complemented with children's equipment and space for terraces It is also planned to build a parking lot underground with capacity for 200 vehicles.

FOCUS GROUP in association with LUGAR VIVO was responsible for supervising the work of remodeling some areas of the building of the Central Mosque of Lisbon, a religious existing equipment that belongs to the Islamic community of Lisbon. One of the prominent areas targeted in the building is the Great Hall because of its size and usability. This space also has a Foyer and their service areas. Note also the construction of a gymnasium adapted to various sports practices (indoor soccer, basketball, gymnastics, etc.), changing rooms and supporting facilities, with seating bench spread over two levels.

FOCUS GROUP was responsible for the refurbishment of the existing building located in the cross between Alexandre Herculano Street and Liberdade Avenue, where in October 2013, Maxmara Feminine Fashion Store was opened. The main changes to the existing building were essentially the installation of an elevator, service stairs suppression, reinforced pavements to increase the fire protection as well as antiseismic behavior. The proposal gave a new light and use to the building backyard. To that effect its level was increased through its use by the Maxmara Store, at the ground level.

Named “Macaco Resort”, this entreprise is located close to Macaco beach on Ilha do Príncipe, in the north-east of the Autonomous Region of Príncipe. The project (thas is suspended) is composed of a boutique hotel with 54 bungalows and a main building with services and common areas. It also includes the first phase of development of a SPA (about 700 m2), a fitness centre, supporting services and a swimming pool. The experience of FOCUS GROUP was an important input during the selection process.
