The Rotary Club of Plant City held it’s annual installation banquet in early July. Outgoing President, Charles Harris, welcomed incoming President, Brett Mueller, who shared: “Under Charles’ leadership, our club managed to raise over $100,000 this past year.” This money was raised through only two events; Dancing With The Locals and the Wild Game Dinner. Additionally, Jodi Smith-Stevens was honored as Rotarian of the Year for the second year in a row! The club secretary also served as Chair for the 2016 Dancing With The Locals fundraiser.” Harris explained, “I had to lean on Jodi a lot this past year and she was always there to help with whatever the club needed.” Gary Wishnatzki, owner of Wish Farms® – Florida berry grower and a leader in the U.S. agricultural industry – spoke in Washington D.C. at the Public Hearing: The Next Farm Bill: Technology & Innovation in Specialty Crops as an industry adviser. Wish Farms has provided high-quality produce since 1922, and now specializes in strawberries, blueberries and blackberries. Most specialty crop growers agree that the availability of labor is the greatest challenge that their industry faces. Mr. Wishnatzki stated, “Innovation will be the key to maintaining our nation’s ability to feed itself. Our representatives should fight for investments in technology and research in the specialty crop sector, while also providing a better way to access labor in the short-term.”

Plant City Photo Archives and History Center summer intern, Martha Lafon, a Florida Southern College senior, accepted her Certificate of Achievement from Photo Archives’ Executive Director Gil Gott. Lafon completed the two-month training which included basic research, historical criticism, data collection, organization and filing. She also completed a paper on an early segment of the UF/IFAS Extension Service.

A Great Investment in Our Future Mentors Needed at Area High Schools BY LINDA LAWSON

D

id you realize how much one hour a week can impact a young person’s life? Mentors in our area schools are desperately needed for the Hillsborough Education Foundation (HEF) mentoring program HEF offers two- and four-year college scholarships to students with good grades and good conduct, but who would most likely not have opportunity to attend a university. HEF volunteer mentors can help by providing the structure and direction they need. This month, Linda Lawson begins her 17th year with the program. “My life has been so enriched by the young women I’ve mentored. Many were with me all four of their high school years. With fewer available mentors than students, I’ve had the privilege to mentor two students weekly. It’s a small sacrifice to meet an hour each with two deserving young people.”

PAGE

14

She continued, “All have been a joy to work with. One mentoring highlight came when after several years of mentoring one student, her mother requested I mentor her sister as well. The eldest is now a college sophomore, and the younger is beginning her high school senior year.” For scholarship recipient Mariah Hamilton, the HEF opportunity helped throughout her education. In hopes more adults will consider mentoring, she shared its impact. “…I didn’t have the means to go to college and I lacked direction. The HEF program partnered me with a mentor and we met every week from 2005-2009, when I graduated. She helped with school work, discussed problems I was facing academically or in general, and most importantly, she believed in me. To this day, we remain in contact and I am honored to call her a friend.” Mariah continued, “In high

school, I had two passions— veterinary medicine and law enforcement. Since I chose to pursue veterinary medicine training, I’ve completed my A.S. degree in Veterinary Technology in 2013. Without the mentoring program and guidance, I probably would not have had that extra push to apply for scholarships. At 26, I’m working full-time as a Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) and training to become a practice manager.” Ms. Carmen Butts, Executive Assistant to Plant City Police Chief Ed Duncan, described her firstyear experience with a Plant City High School freshman. “Great and uneventful. Considering I’m a mother of three adult daughters and four grandsons, mentoring is just like raising/assisting another child.” She added, “I asked my student to always be honest so I could effectively assist her. When she realized how important this quality

was to me, she began to be more transparent. We’re still working on organization, planning and taking responsibility for personal actions,” Carmen offered. “Over the summer, I received a card thanking me for not giving up and for being hard on her at times. She wrote her goal is to make me proud.” Brigitte Sheppard, another first-time mentor with HEF wrote: “My hat’s off to the ‘Take Stock in Children’ (HEF) organization and its staff, volunteers, and benefactors. Mentoring made a great impact on my life as I offered insight on life in general to a wonderful 16-yearold. In turn, she enriched my understanding of today’s youth. When she asked, ‘Please mentor me the next two years,’ I felt complimented. In our year together, we solved many problems. I’m most proud to have earned her trust because I truly want her to succeed in life.” Another HEF scholarship recipient, Gabriela Flores, begins her second year at the University of South Florida on a four-year scholarship. She said, “Receiving the HEF scholarship is an honor and blessing that has made my dream of going to a university come true. During high school I was assigned a mentor and offered many opportunities to give back to our community. She helped prepare me for the future. As the first in my family to attend college, my parents were supportive but knew nothing about the process; nor were we financially prepared. My mentor gave constructive advice about situations I’d face. I thank HEF and my mentor for this wonderful opportunity.” This outstanding program needs more adults willing to make a positive impact in a young person’s life. Can you spare one hour weekly during the school year? If so, please contact Anna Laird at alaird@educationfoundation.com for information and tell her “Linda sent me.” This is your year to become a life-changer.

Plant City Noon Rotary Club Community Appreciation Fun Day BY SHERRIE MUELLER

Members of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department’s Mounted Enforcement Team gave demonstrations to the delight of the crowd attending Community Fun Day.

C

rowds lined up a half-hour early to receive free backto-school bags at the Plant City Noon Rotary Club’s 2nd Annual Community Appreciation Fun Day. An estimated 700 folks enjoyed the games, demonstrations, food and treats at the Randy Larson Softball Complex on August 5, 2017. Several divisions of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office impressed the crowd with their demonstrations. The Swat Team, comprised of the HCSO and the Plant City Police Department, also was on hand to answer questions. The Plant City Fire Department demonstrated the “Jaws of Life” which allowed the wide-eyed children to see how they quickly but methodically disassemble a car to rescue trapped occupants. HCSO Major Kyle Robinson, also a Rotarian, chaired the fascinating law enforcement exhibits. Unity in the Community provided a Rock Climbing Wall and a Bungee Jumping Booth to the delight of the children. Many younger kids

enjoyed the Bounce House and Inflatable Slide as well as costumed characters. Families enjoyed hotdogs provided by Felton’s Food Market. “This event has doubled in size over last year in both attendance and booths offering games and treats,” stated a pleased Brett Mueller, President of the Plant City Noon Rotary. “Doug Watson, with Anita and James Surrency, did an awesome job chairing the event and approximately 40 Rotarians volunteered and contributed to the success.” With the growth of the event and the enthusiasm of volunteers and the crowd, Rotary is already making plans for the 3rd annual event. This 2nd annual was a fun way to gain a better understanding and respect for Plant City area law enforcement. Thank you, Plant City Noon Rotary, for providing a great way to celebrate our students and community.

Deputy Mark Burchell gave this young lad a thrill to share at Show and Tell when school begins. Children sat on his official HCSO Motorcycle and learned about the operation and care of the vehicle.

Children of all ages were intrigued with vehicle assortment displayed at the Rotary’s Community Appreciation Fun Day by the Hillsborough County Sheriff Department, including this airboat.

Ducks Unlimited East Hillsborough Ducks Chapter to host 2017 Dinner and Auction

BY CHERYL JOHNSTON

T

he East Hillsborough Chapter of Ducks Unlimited (DU) of Hillsborough County, Florida, will host its annual Dinner and Auction on September 14th, 2017 at the Plant City Armory located at 4004 Airport Road, Plant City, Florida. Happy hour starts at 6:00 p.m. with dinner served at 7:15. Raffles and auctions to follow. Ducks Unlimited Inc. is the world’s largest non-profit organization dedicated to conserving North America’s continually disappearing waterfowl habitats. With the farmland literally ‘blowing away’ during the horrific dust storms of the 1930’s Dust Bowl, Ducks Unlimited was born in 1937 as a first line effort to restore our wetlands. When the veterans returned from World War II, there emerged a ground swell of rankand-file members who wanted to make a positive difference in the world they had seen so ravaged by

PAGE

18

war. Through efforts such as the “Duk-A-Nikel” program, individual hunting camps would raise money and contribute it to Ducks Unlimited. From those humble beginnings, Ducks Unlimited has conserved more than 14 million acres thanks in part to the contributions from more than a million current supporters across the continent. Guided by science and dedicated to program efficiency, DU works toward the vision of wetlands sufficient to fill the skies with waterfowl today, tomorrow and forever. Wayne Tasler, East Hillsborough Volunteer Area Chairman invited, “In January, 2017 Ducks Unlimited celebrated 80 years of conservation efforts. Join us as we celebrate 31 years of wetlands conservation and restoration efforts here in Hillsborough County.” He added, “Get in on all of the action including door prizes, multiple raffles and both live & silent auctions. We’ll have

fishing and hunting trips, top quality coolers, limited edition guns, and this year’s hottest DU merchandise available!” For tickets, sponsorship opportunities or more info, contact Wayne Tasler at wayne.tasler@gmail. com or 727-743-8810.

87 Miles for Smiles 87-year-old Margie Gonzalez walks for GFWC Fundraiser BY WENDY S. BROWN | PHOTO PROVIDED BY PATRICIA WOLF

N

ormally I wouldn’t tell a lady’s age, but Margie Gonzalez is special. You see, instead of coming up with birthday present ideas for herself, she is giving to others. Margie will be 87 on August 25, 2017 and has decided to walk one mile for each of her 87 years by that date to raise money for Operation Smile. This little dynamo wants to do something big and plans to walk the last mile on her birthday, probably surrounded by friends, family, and members of the GFWC Plant City Women’s Club. Margie had been invited by a friend to one of the club’s luncheons and was just amazed at how involved the women were in a multitude of projects, including the handmade dolls they send to Operation Smile, one of club’s International Outreach projects. With the crayons supplied, children undergoing surgery can draw herself/himself on the skin-colored fabric dolls that don’t have faces, hair, or clothing. Thinking she could do something too, Margie decided to walk 87 miles by her birthday and create a fundraiser to help others, especially since we all have so much. “I’m feeling so good about myself. I’m getting out and exercising so I feel better. I’m using an odometer, and walking really early to beat the heat,” said Margie. The Virginia-based Operation Smile was founded in 1982 after Dr. Bill Magee, Jr. and his wife, Kathy a nurse, visited the Philippines and were overwhelmed by the various medical needs. Operation Smile gives exceptional surgical care and provides life-changing surgery for children born with cleft lips or palates. Often these children are shunned by others, have low selfesteem, have difficulty eating and communicating. Did you know that

Margie Gonzalez just finished walking 30 miles of her goal near the dog park in Walden Lake.

because many children with cleft lips or palates can’t suck, they die of starvation? This precious lady is just so excited about doing something for others, especially children. Yes, she is just walking, but this project is really big because her goal is to raise enough money to pay for the life-changing surgery of 20 children. Operation Smile covers the $240 surgery cost, so families pay nothing. To date, Margie has raised $2,100 of her goal, which means that ten children at this point will receive major surgery to repair their cleft lips or palates. As a community, we too can help a medically needy child live a more normal life. Just call Margie at 754-4656. She would love to chat about this project and provide you with information about donating to Operation Smile. Checks can also be mailed to the Plant City Women’s Club, 1110 N. Wheeler Street, Plant City, FL 33563. In closing the interview, I asked Margie what her goal for next year’s birthday will be. Well, you’ll just have to wait, because it’s a big SURPRISE! PAGE

As for Plant City, Morgan really enjoys the Florida Strawberry Festival, Krazy Kup, and the buffet at Fred’s Market. Morgan graduated in May of this year from the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program at Hillsborough Community College, Plant city campus. She plans to continue her education at HCC via the Paramedic Program with an overall goal to become a Flight Nurse.

Focus: Why did you choose the emergency medical career? “I like that I get to help people and follow in my dad’s footsteps, who is a paramedic currently.”

Focus: You work now as a lifeguard instructor, correct? “Yes, I’ve been a lifeguard for seven years, and an instructor for two of those. I like it, and it’s a great way to get somewhat involved in my future career.”

Focus: What are some of your noncareer life goals? “I love to travel and really want to visit Australia, Ireland, and Africa, mostly on a safari.” Focus: Do you hope eventually to have children? “Maybe one day, but until then I have my two cats.”

Did You Know?

The Home Demonstration Program and Its Role in County Extension Services BY MARTHA LAFON, STUDENT INTERN AT PLANT CITY PHOTO ARCHIVES

A Home Demonstration club in Springhead, Florida, 1934.

R

esearch and Education Centers, such as the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Science (IFAS) site at Hillsborough Community College, Plant City Campus, are sprinkled throughout the state. One might think such facilities are for the benefit of the university. Not entirely so. These branches are not only intended to expand the breadth and influence of the school itself but also to inform people with practical information and sound methods pertaining to life in the areas in which they are located. IFAS is very advanced today, responsible for large-scale innovation, with work including, but not limited to, development of new plant cultivars and eradication of crop diseases. Despite its advancement, the service has maintained its original mission of extension: educating those enrolled, conducting studies, and spreading research findings to surrounding communities. Extension work is a longstanding tradition, and history sheds light into its progression and how it arrived at its current state. Looking at a timeline of the

PAGE

24

extension service, we can trace back to the era of Abraham Lincoln. In the mid-19th century, a political movement in response to social needs called for the establishment of postsecondary schools that would specialize in agricultural and mechanical arts. 1862 marked the passage of the Morrill Act, which deemed appropriate the sale of federal land for the creation of such colleges, later known as land grant universities. Following the Morrill Act, the Hatch Act of 1887 allowed a series of experiment stations to be placed in various locations under the direction of each state’s land grant institution. The Morrill and Hatch Acts arose not only from the need for practical knowledge, but also the need for practical assistance. In the late 1800s, a large percentage of Americans still lived in an agrarian society—farming was a common way of life and business. In addition to domestic affairs, families were responsible for food production, preparation, and preservation. Skills in agriculture and homemaking were not widely known as they are today and although rural groups could

benefit from information that would lend itself to improved practice, they did not have easy access to educational sources. The 1914 Smith-Lever Act sought to remedy this situation and put the plan of cooperative extension into place, creating a partnership between government and the land grant university system. Under this act, an agency could act as a medium through which knowledge from the university could be communicated to residents and translated into action in their homes and communities. To ensure regional staff would be able to aid a wide range of residential farm families, the program was funded jointly by federal, state and county government, and every county of every state was to have a satellite branch of the university. Extension agents pioneered in the field of adult education, aiming to enhance living conditions in rural areas throughout the country. The program of work would include internal organization and administration, informational and educational publications, youth development programs, (e.g. 4-H clubs), and agricultural assistance. In addition to lessons in agriculture, the extension service placed emphasis on family and consumer sciences, incorporating lessons in home economics. One example of progress in the extension program is found in Home Demonstration. Women were responsible for food, clothing, home management, child care, family life, and housing. An agent, trained in home economics, agricultural, and other sciences would help women learn to manage these tasks. Home demonstration agents offered both one-on-one assistance and led locally organized women’s groups and clubs. Shared interests among homemakers led to the formation of cohesive and self-improvement oriented councils and clubs. With the home demonstration agents’

leadership, these groups would meet to discuss topics, serve food, and practice skills, with the motto being “Make the best better.” When state legislatures passed bills, home demonstration councils paid attention and set out to acquaint their members with understanding and skills as related to these changes, e.g., the enrichment of flour. This helped with specific tasks and provided a gateway into discussion of health and nutrition. In addition to practical lessons, groups also hosted events and fundraisers. Home demonstration built a bond. Women looked to the home demonstration agent for counsel and guidance and by sharing in activities with other women, they became less isolated. And at a time when many did not attend college, extension service was a way for them to be encouraged by the learning process and see the worth of a broad knowledge of family needs. The agent, as an arm of the land grant college, provided assistance to farm families and encouraged the university to become aware of issues among rural families and adapt instruction to various locations. Illustrative of the IFAS mission of “extending and implementing research-based information to the people of Florida,” the Home Demonstration Program as it previously existed served as an early basis for the state-wide extension service we have today. Jarrett-Scott Ford

Florida’s Oldest, Most Trusted Ford Dealership “Florida’s Oldest and Most Trusted Ford Dealership” was established in 1912 at the corner of Park Road and U.S. 92 in 1912. Since the Jarrett family purchased their first dealership in 1978, they have added four additional Ford dealerships and now houses the largest inventory of new or used Fords anywhere in Central Florida. General Manager and coowner Jim Scott is especially proud of his staff and wanted this story to shine a light on them. “They are hard-working professionals and we enjoy working together, like a family. Each one doing their part, every day, contributes to our success.”

The Jarrett-Scott Ford team takes great pride in the high level of customer satisfaction the dealership earns through a high level of employee satisfaction. “We treat our employees honestly and fairly,” Scott explained, “so they in turn treat our customers in the same manner.” Scott is a very involved and approachable General Manager, traits the employees model. Everyone at the company is approachable because the other team members and customers are their family and this is their community. The team knows “Communication is key to our success.” “No one hides here,” Scott

said. “I tell everyone, ‘My office is right across from the bathroom. If my door is open, step in to say hello.’” “I am also very proud of the employment longevity of our staff,” he added. “We have 16 employees who have worked here more than 10 years, and five of those for 20 or more. Their experience and commitment to the company are invaluable.” Top Ranked Service Department The highly-qualified technicians at Jarrett-Scott Ford provide exceptional service in a timely manner. From oil changes to transmission replacements, they’re dedicated to maintaining

top tier customer service, for both new and pre-owned car buyers. The dealership is proud to be “Tampa Bay’s Only Edmunds 5-Star Rated Ford Store” and from the reviews online, it appears many agree. Ford Master Certified Service Technician Thomas Zalys, an employee since 1986, worked for the previous owners and was pleased to continue when the Jarretts bought the dealership in 1995. He thoroughly enjoys his work. “When I started, I was a young guy with long hair. I’ve raised my family here and live just two minutes away,” he explained. “I like working with people and making customer’s vehicles run properly again.” PAGE

Carl DeMuth, employed with the Jarrett family since 1989, raves about the new body shop, built 18 months ago at Jarrett-Scott Ford. “It is amazing. We have the space to be more organized and the environment is much cooler with high ceilings and new fans. Of the two spray booths for painting, one is a new downdraft booth.”

Scott added, “Tom does pretty much everything. He’s a troubleshooter when no one else can figure out the car’s problem.” He also gets visits from regular customers when they have a question or need reassurance about a repair. They trust his advice and return again and again when their vehicle needs attention. Tom enjoys the challenge of repairs, loves his work, and likes to build long-term relationships with the dealership’s customers. He has no plans to retire anytime soon. “It’s been really great working here all these years,” he offered. “I can’t leave. They’re gonna have to throw me out.” More than a few customers agree that Jarrett-Scott Ford provides superior service. A quick glance at Edmunds, Facebook, or Google explains why. We have taken our vehicle to our advisor, Robert Dills, since our purchase in 2006. He PAGE

is always friendly, professional, and does everything in his power to get us fixed up right the first time. Even if a part is backordered, or service takes longer than expected, he tries to find solutions and will personally take care of you any way he can. ~~ becktator (reviewer) We use the Jarrett-Scott service department regularly for our vehicles and are very pleased with service and repairs provided. Our service adviser is always friendly, prompt and answers all of our questions in detail. ~~ EchoServ (reviewer) New Body Shop Craftsmanship is a standard at Jarrett-Scott Ford. Their specially-trained Body Shop professionals have all the parts, tools and expertise to repair your vehicle’s damage. Their goal with collision repair is always to “fix it right...the first time” and provide fast, easy service. Body shop manager Carl

DeMuth, employed with the Jarretts since 1989, transferred from their Dade City dealership with the family’s Plant City store purchase. In his 28 years with the company, 22 have been here in Plant City. He learned the business in high school when he spent half the day in core classes and the other half training with tradesmen in their shops. “Our new body shop, built 18 months ago, is amazing. We have the space to be more organized and the environment is much cooler with the high ceilings and new fans. Of the two spray booths for painting, one is a new downdraft booth,” raved DeMuth. “We can do full-line aluminum repairs, too. This is important because some newer vehicles are constructed with more aluminum and the aluminum dust and steel dust are corrosive on each other.” Of his customers, he said: “The people we deal with aren’t happy when we first

see them because they’ve just had an accident and been inconvenienced. The first thing we ask is ‘Were you injured?’ Because cars can be repaired or replaced, but people can’t be replaced. Jason [Swilley] greets them and assures them we can accomplish their repairs. They relate to our compassion for their situation. We have great customers in Plant City.” DeMuth said, “One of the joys of working here is Jim Scott and the way he treats employees. It’s also so nice to deal with the hometown customers. I started here in my mid-20s and I’m approaching retirement age. I raised my family here, too.” “The nine employees in the body shop are very talented and qualified personnel. “It’s all they’ve ever done and they take their work seriously,” DeMuth added. “Many don’t understand the skill required. First, we must repair or replace so all the parts fit correctly before we begin

the finishing and painting work. There’s a definite technique to the process. But I love my work and I wouldn’t do anything different.” Top Ranked Sales Team Jarrett-Scott Ford’s sales team has an incredible reputation. Testimonials abound on Facebook, Google, Edmunds, and elsewhere that prove what a joy customers find in purchasing their new or used vehicle from the hometown Ford dealership. “We have no desire to be the biggest Ford dealership around,” shared Scott. “We just want to be the best!” Room to Grow When Jarrett-Scott Ford purchased the parcel of land to the west of the dealership and removed the Royal Oaks Motel, little did they know the Department of Transportation would plan to four-lane U.S. 92 from Alabama Street across Park Road and all the way to County Line Road. Announced only nine months ago, this widening will take place in 2021 and will incorporate some of the dealership’s frontage on U.S. 92. “Thankfully,” Scott said, “with this purchase made some time ago, we will still have plenty of room to grow.” Financing Jarrett-Scott Ford’s new and user-friendly website offers some great tools for simplifying the finance portion of the sale. For an instant rate, check out the online car loan calculator and proceed to the online finance application. All types of credit, from good to bad, can qualify for an auto

loan. No credit, no problem! The Jarrett-Scott Ford team will work with you to secure a no credit car loan if your situation demands it. Low interest car loans are available for customers with existing loans, too. The finance specialists can help you refinance your car loan or adjust the term of the contract. Community Involvement Generosity has grown the business, too. Throughout the Jarrett-Scott Ford history, the company reaches out to support the community’s needs. Though it’s impossible to name every organization they have helped over the years, here are just a few: YMCA, Rotary, Kiwanis, Lions, South Florida Baptist Hospital Foundation, United Food Bank, Chamber of Commerce, Plant City Photo Archives, Robert W. Willaford Railroad Museum, FFA, Plant City High, Durant High, Strawberry Crest High, Wilson Elementary, Walden Lake Elementary, Knights Elementary, Tomlin Middle, Marshall Middle, Little League Baseball, Football and Soccer, Relay for Life, MADD, Fraternal Order of Police, Elks, Boys and Girls Club. If you’re in the market for a car or truck, pre-owned or new, be sure to stop at Jarrett-Ford first. The visit will save you time and money in shopping because you’ll probably be driving away with your new purchase. Folks come from all over Central Florida to buy their next ride at the oldest and best hometown Ford dealership! And when you come soon to 2000 W. Baker Street in Plant City, be sure to stick your head in Jim Scott’s door and say “Howdy!”

Brandon Legal Group Providing Experience, Service and Respect, Excellent Care and Representation If there’s one thing Brandon Legal Group’s managing attorney, Ingrid Hooglander, wants people to know, it’s that they should feel incredibly comfortable with their lawyer. People usually seek out attorneys because something terrible has happened, and what they want is “someone to understand, somebody to listen,” she said. “You want somebody to get it, to actually hear you. You want somebody who cares.” Brandon Legal Group, which she started in 2008, strives to provide excellent customer PAGE

service and excellent legal representation ethically, morally and in compliance with the Florida Bar. Continuing legal education and professional growth are not just encouraged among the staff but mandated, because the law is constantly changing. “The standard I hold myself to, and the standard we have for our office is ‘How do I want to be treated?’” Hooglander said. “Legal services are not inexpensive, and individuals should receive a quality product for what they pay. They should

also receive kind-heartedness and understanding.” The lawyers at Brandon Legal Group are passionate about providing the same service they would want if they had paid for it. “You would want that person to go above and beyond to make sure that your best interests or your child’s best interests were being addressed,” said Hooglander. The firm handles cases regarding family law, juvenile law, business and civil litigation, criminal defense, DUI, real estate law, bankruptcy, gun trusts,

copyright and small business. Estate planning attorneys help with wills, powers of attorney, trusts, probate, special-needs trusts, healthcare surrogate, durable powers of attorney and irrevocable life insurance trusts. Two of the firm’s lawyers are becoming qualified in specialeducation law to help parents of children with special needs who require an IEP (Individualized Education Program). Meet with us,” said Hooglander. “Make sure you feel comfortable. Do you feel like the attorney sitting across from you has your or your kid’s best interest at heart? If you don’t feel like they’re going to speak for you and protect you, you need to weigh that decision carefully.” “Sometimes all I can do is hold a person’s hand and pray with them in my office, the courthouse hallway or the courtroom,” said Hooglander. “Sometimes it’s giving them a hug. Sometimes it’s giving them a backbone and telling them they need to grow up. Responding to emails at night or over the weekend. Everybody here tries their darnedest to make sure the client’s needs are being met and that we are doing the best we can.”

your needs. As one of six children growing up in the Brandon, Florida practice opened by Dr. John Busciglio in 1971, Derek developed a passion for dental health. Subsequent to his graduation from Plant City High School, Derek earned degrees at the University of South Florida, where he played football, and Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston. Since that time and with further education, Dr. Derek is now a diplomat of the American Board of Orthodontics. Today, this specialist is dedicated to providing the

most effective, innovative and affordable orthodontic and pediatric dentistry services available, in a “family first” atmosphere, for children and adults in his home community of Plant City, Florida, as well as in Brandon and Lithia. Notably, Teen Magazine recently featured Busciglio Smiles as a “top” Ortho practice in Florida. Dr. Derek believes his Busciglio Smiles practice and team members enjoy an exceptional position to communicate and provide a comprehensive and compassionate approach to

dental health. One example of this is that rather using the “goop” impressions material, Busciglio Smiles uses digital scanning technology, a much more pleasant experience for the patient. The board certified practitioners make every effort to provide a one-of-a-kind experience designed to meet your entire family’s pediatric dental and orthodontic needs. “Dental office visits should be something patients look forward to,” he shared, “because with proper care, they can expect to have a healthy mouth for the rest of their lives.” Busciglio Smiles is committed

to creating beautiful, confident smiles for children, teens, and adults. Each location offers a wide variety of treatment options ranging from traditional, time-proven appliances to the latest innovative orthodontic advancements and Invisalign® clear braces. Invisalign® In addition to traditional treatment options such as braces, Busciglio Smiles also provides Invisalign®, the most esthetic treatment option for straightening teeth. As a “Top 1% Elite Invisalign® Provider” and the only Elite provider for the Invisalign® system in eastern Hillsborough County, Busciglio Smiles has accomplished an extraordinary and highly valued level of expertise. “Offering Invisalign® and Invisalign® TEEN has been a tremendous service to our younger patients and their parents who desire the clear alternative to traditional treatment,” says Dr. Derek, who also trains other dentists in this exclusive system. Pediatric Dentistry Specialists in Plant City and Lithia As a pediatric dentistry practice also, patients can have the best of both worlds. From your child’s first visit at age 1 until they are ready to begin their adult lives, the Busciglio Smiles pediatric specialists are dedicated to providing the highest quality, compassionate dental care that will result in a lifelong, healthy smile!

“When we begin seeing them at an early age, the children become very comfortable in our offices,” shared Dr. Derek. “They have no fear and they’re excited about their dental health. It’s also nice to be the one-stop provider.” Pediatric dentistry involves learning dentistry of small teeth along with learning behavior management with children. It’s the art of distraction in three basic steps: You tell the child what you’re going to do, show him what you’re going to do, and then you do it. What’s important is that there are no surprises for the child. In accordance with Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommendations, Dr. Busciglio recommends your child visits a pediatric dentist in Plant City or Fishhawk no later than their first birthday. Busciglio Smiles has four goals for your child’s first visit: • Education – Our pediatric dentists first offer information about dietary practices and proper oral hygiene techniques that will help prevent early childhood cavities. • Evaluation – The specialists check for signs of habit development, abnormal tooth growth, and cavity risks. • Familiarization – To create a positive attitude toward visiting the dentist, children are introduced slowly to the pediatric dental environment. • Assessment and Cleaning – Our experienced pediatric dentist and orthodontist will assess the health of the child’s gums and teeth, evaluate for oral disease, and perform a cleaning that

leaves them feeling great about their smile. As a time-saving convenience for parents, www.theorthodoc. com contains the New Patient Health History for print out and completion before the first visit. At Busciglio Smiles, the staff goes to great lengths to educate parents and help children feel excited about receiving pediatric dental checkups and treatments. And the families respond beautifully!

Community Involvement Activism and generosity come natural to Dr. Derek. The Busciglio Smiles locations support charitable community efforts, and especially those that impact children. In addition to providing scholarships to selected deserving high school seniors annually, team members donate time and energy for causes their patients support. Cameron Financial Management One thing Michael Cameron loves most about his work at Cameron Financial Management is the opportunity to teach clients about investing. “I can help individual investors and business owners develop strategies to fit their unique financial needs and goals,” he explained. “I enjoy teaching and helping them make sound decisions.” Cameron’s father taught at Cork Elementary School for 44 years, so Michael learned by example. Although he doesn’t work in a typical classroom, he PAGE

40

considers himself a teacher. “My teaching style about investing is takes a different approach from most financial management companies,” he shared. “I try to help people better understand the market by explaining their options and how best to protect their assets through a customized program. Then they can make informed decisions.” He added, “I take pride in educating the public, whether a stock boy or a CEO of a large corporation.” Cameron Financial Management provides

assistance with investments, insurance, and financial planning. If you need advice regarding stocks, bonds, mutual funds, annuities, life insurance, gold, silver, college savings or any other money-related topic, “whether you have $1,000 or $1 million,” Cameron looks forward to helping you. With the U. S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) final rule of April 6, 2016, the “investment advice fiduciary” definition under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA) was expanded and

modified regarding the complex of prohibited transaction exemptions for investment activities. This ruling requires all financial planners to comply by December 31, 2017. Cameron’s job before that date is to inform each of his investors with this important information on how this can affect their asset management accounts. He’s busy with office consultations and welcomes clients to call his cell up until 10 p.m. He schedules Saturday appointments as well. He said, “I really try to focus on their

schedules, needs and goals.” His experience in the field of financial advising sets him apart from competitors as well. His finance career started in July 2001 with Edward Jones, and he has helped clients through the full-market cycle, from the 9/11 tragecy and the boom of 2007, to the “great recession” of 2008-09. Cameron Financial Management is connected with LPL Financial, the largest independent broker-dealer in the U.S. This partnership allows Cameron the advantages of a nationwide company and the flexibility to offer personal, individualized service with a hometown touch. LPL Financial does not develop its own investment products, which enables the firm’s more than 14,000 investment professionals to offer financial advice free from broker/dealer-inspired conflicts of interest. Cameron has strengthened and grown his business by developing lasting relationships with quality individuals, who over the years have trusted him to speak with friends, relatives and colleagues about investment management services. He shared, “As my clients know, each relationship is afforded the highest standards of confidentiality, as well as thoughtful and courteous service. I only offer investment advice and counsel once I’ve done my homework and thoroughly understand an individual’s needs.” He enjoys his work of “quietly making money for people,” explaining, “It’s been a tremendous year for our clients.” Like his father who left a legacy of impacting the

community, Cameron has tried to follow in those footsteps—not only through his business, but in numerous civic and commerce leadership positions here in his “wonderful hometown.” As a past Chairman of the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce, business owner, and Outstanding Citizen, Cameron knows firsthand the value of connecting with and serving others. “We are a tight-knit community, but we encourage everyone to get involved. There’s so much more we can accomplish together.” Although leadership and team building are almost as natural as breathing for this born encourager, he’s now enjoying some behind-the-scenes support for others in those positions. This philosophy has worked well for the fifth-generation Plant City resident. “I’ve built my business around community involvement and friendships that developed through that. People here are sincere, friendly and they want to help.” The happy, healthy, and helpful Cameron is involved locally, having been pastpresident of Friends of the Library, Lions Club, and Toastmasters. He has served the Florida Strawberry Festival on the Grand Parade Committee, with the Strawberry Queen Scholarship Pageant and in the Chamber information booth. Pig Jam and Planes, Trains, & Automobiles are other favorite local traditions and charitablecause fundraising events. Recently appointed to serve on the City of Plant City’s Safety Pension Board, Cameron will assist in ensuring secure pensions for our policemen and

fire rescue workers. Cameron and his wife Terrie, who works with the City’s maintenance department, have one son, Nicholas, a Plant City High School senior. Whenever possible, the family enjoys outdoor activities, traveling, and exploring new places. They are also active members at First United Methodist Church, where they were married. “We sit in the second row because it kept me out of trouble as a kid. Nicholas enjoys the youth group and Terrie and I love our Wednesday night small group, ‘The Last Suppers.’” “I’ve competed in storytelling competitions recently, too, with local and division wins, but not state yet,” he added. “I’m a health-conscious foodie now, so I love to cook and barbeque, even in contests. I also collect vintage Weber grills and our family tries to help with various

fundraisers for individuals battling disease or tragic circumstances. “We can’t just sit around and do nothing. We must be actively involved in our wonderfully unique Plant City,” Cameron offered. “This is my town, and these are my people. It’s a great place to live and connect.” Fifth-generation Plant City native and Client Relations Manager Shawnia McNary Kummelman agrees. Since Cameron Financial Management opened its Suite 109 door at 110 West Reynolds Street, she has enjoyed “working with people, because each has their own story.” For a complimentary financial portfolio review and consultation—on a no-pressure, no-obligation basis—contact Michael Cameron, an advisor you can trust.

To ensure clients receive a good first impression, firsttime patients receive a $59 special offer, including a routine

cleaning, exam, and a full set of x-rays—all for a $300 value! “People are able to try us out for an affordable price at their first visit. Then they can decide if they want to become a patient or not,” said Jean Ann Davenport, Regional Manager of Operations. Patients are the heart of the Dental Associates at Walden Woods practice. Staff members focus on providing patients with lifetime care through personable, affordable services that ensure they keep returning time and again for all their dental care needs.

In fact, many patients who started visiting the office when it first opened 20 years ago have since been returning with their own children, allowing the office the privilege of treating two to three generations of patients. For the past seven years, Dr. Ray Gutierrez has been helping the Dental Associates at Walden Woods office provide personable family care for patients. During that time, the University of Florida graduate has also been helping to expand its services with state-of-the-art technology. Many that he first treated as children are now high school teenagers. Of the work he loves, he especially enjoys

“the interaction with patients,” explaining, “I like to see the different families and people continuously throughout the year. You know, establishing those relationships.” Dr. Gutierrez appreciates the overall hometown atmosphere at the office, where both staff and patients act like a giant family. “I love the family practice and focus, [where] we can do everything and help a variety of people,” he said. “We always go the extra mile to make sure the patient is taken care of.” He added, “I also enjoy having a close-knit team here. I take pride in making sure we have a consistent team and staff.”

University of Florida graduate Dr. Helen Hoveida has worked at the office for the past five years, since moving to Plant City. She loves working with Dr. Ray in the family-oriented office and residing within a special hometown where the patients she helps treat are also the people she knows every day. “I am grateful to be part of an amazing team and town,” she said. “I love the community. I love helping the patients. It is my passion to see a smile on their faces, once you give them a beautiful smile.” Two recent reviews posted to Facebook tell that story from patients’ perspectives.

In her 5-star review, Roxanne Ross shared: At 61-years-old, I have been to many dentists… This is the first and only office and dentist to which I have actually looked forward to going! Dr. Ray is so caring and careful. He takes into account dental anxiety and does everything possible to relieve it— successfully...He is equally skilled as well as kind. The hygienists are excellent and remember my particular needs...The office staff makes me feel like a member of their office family, making every call a chat as well. Every aspect of Dental Associates at Walden Woods is exemplary and worthy of the highest praise. Drs. Ray and Helen have developed a practice beyond anything I have ever experienced… Shala Williams Oneal rated the practice 5-stars as well. “Love Dr. Ray. I adore Helen... best dentist around. I have really bad “dentist anxiety.” They make you feel so comfortable... they even have blankets to keep you warm.” For wonderful care in a friendly dental practice, like so many others agree, you can’t go wrong by making an appointment with Dental Associates at Walden Woods. Discount Screening

Emphasizing Quality and Customer Service Since 1983, Discount Screening, Inc. owner Marty Johnson and his technicians have believed: “Quality IS everything and the benefits of this strong commitment go directly to YOU, our valued customer.” As a sub-contractor throughout the eighties, Marty had done it all, including aluminum repair jobs. “Whenever there was a damaged lanai or pool enclosure,” he recalled, “I was the one everyone knew could fix it.” Seeing a need in the community for a quality PAGE

screen repair company, Johnson eventually decided to focus exclusively on that work and formed Discount Screening, Inc. From the beginning, he was determined his company would be a leader in responsiveness and quality. Discount Screening only uses the best available materials, long-lasting and durable. “I don’t believe in cutting corners,” offered Johnson, “which is why I don’t like to use imported screen, also known as China screen, because the poor quality doesn’t perform well.” Customers can

rest assured that all labor and materials used by Discount Screening are warranted. Customer service is another key to the company’s success. Johnson shared, “For 30+ years, making customers happy has been my goal,” Since most live here in Plant City, he knows, “It’s important to do a good job,” because “word gets around.” The licensed and insured Discount Screening, Inc. specializes in the repairing and re-screening of all types of screened enclosures. “Whether you need an entire enclosure,

rescreen or just need a few screens replaced, we will breathe new life into your existing enclosures,” Marty explained. “Our company also accepts insurance claims and offers to beat competitors’ pricing. We want to be the best in the business. The quality work we do and seeing satisfaction on my customers’ faces inspires me.” Services Discount Screening offers include: ALL REPAIRS including Aluminum, Vinyl Window, Individual Panel repairs, screen doors, and pool cage cable ties.

A 5-year warranty is provided on all rescreening labor and materials, with a 10-year warranty for “Super Screen®.” Super Screen® is the newest space-age technology in enclosure screen protection for pool, patio or porch. This high-quality, long-lasting home improvement investment is the perfect choice for the

homeowner who demands the very best in family enjoyment and outdoor safety. Marty Johnson is adamant about doing everything the right way. He explained, “I only use the best.” He is proud to use products by Phifer Incorporated, a company established in 1952 whose motto is “Weaving Excellence with Innovation.” Phifer consumer products make it easy to enjoy the outdoors from inside. The world’s largest screening producer offers a wide variety of insect screens and exterior solar screens to help keep out bugs and solar heat while preserving the view. Interior sun control fabrics help reduce solar heat and create soft, usable indoor light. According to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, “A good way to keep your house cool in the summer is to shade it from the outside. Any way that stops the sun before it gets through the

glass is seven times as good at keeping you cool as blinds or curtains on the inside.” Another way to improve energy efficiency and reduce interior fading is with the installation of Phifer’s SheerWeave® Interior Sun Control Fabrics. With a variety of openness factors available, light colors reflect the sun’s rays, while dark colors improve outside view and maximize glare reduction. Felton’s Market

Choice Meat - Produce - Groceries Felton’s Meat and Produce houses a world of multi-cultural food items inside its 12,000 square foot grocery store at US 92 and Maryland Avenue in Plant City. Today, Lee Williams and his sister Karen Davis, who grew up in the business, manage the family-owned operation established in 1955 by their parents, Felton and Lucille Williams. Widely recognized for its impressive meat department, Felton’s feels like the neighborhood butcher shop PAGE

48

of yesteryear. Great pricing on fresh, frozen, custom cuts, and smoked meats place this local grocery in a league by itself. Families can enjoy even more savings by ordering 24 hours in advance from four “meat bundles,” priced $55 to $139. Simply view the packages online, call 813-752-1548, receive an e-mail confirmation, and pick up tomorrow. Regular customers have also discovered a treasure trove in Felton’s freshly smoked or fried meats, smoked onsite or deliready to become the main dish

of your lunch or evening meal. To give your home cook a break on extra busy days, stop by Felton’s to have dinner on the table quickly. The store offers smoked specialties such as ribs, brisket, Boston butt, sausage, picnic hams, pulled pork and chicken or its deli-prepared fried pork chops, chicken drumsticks, and wings. When extra large gatherings demand larger quantities, Felton’s will prepare any meat purchased in the store. Folks can also order smoked turkeys 24 hours in advance and four days

prior for smoked whole hogs. Of his approximately 90 regular employees’ loyalty to customers, Williams shared: “For big weekends like the Fourth of July, we feel like we’re going home with them to enjoy the foods they buy. It’s the same for Memorial Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas, too. We’re part of their family, and they’re part of ours.” Of his work with Felton’s since 1957, Meat Department Manager Ed Jackson said, “Everything about this store and the meat business thrills me to death. The

people are just like family…You would think I owned it.” In addition to quality meats and competitive pricing, Felton’s also boasts the “largest selection of seasonings on the planet,” including meat seasonings, spices, rubs, and sauces for the at-home chefs and BBQ specialists. The store also offers specialties such as Orale!™ spices/peppers/herbs, Jarritos fruit beverages, a variety of rice in 20-pound bags, green and hot boiled peanuts, fresh-made salads, baked beans, potato wedges, and banana pudding. To complement meals,

Produce Manager Ron Marshall purchases fruits and fresh vegetables, including ethnic favorites, from local growers and markets as often as possible. “We specialize in fresh greens such as collards, turnip, mustard and kale,” he said, “because they’re a big deal in this area.” Because of Felton’s rich history with the Plant City community, customer service is a priority. Service desk employees, including Anne Heidgerd, enjoy helping shoppers with postage stamp purchases, TECO and Bright House payments, check cashing, Western Union and

Orlandi Valuta money orders or transfers, food stamps/EBT/ WIC cards and corporate or organizational accounts. Food Safety Manager Frankie Smith Oakley and her husband, Robert, the Hot Deli Manager, credit Williams for his leadership. “Lee sets the example and we all try to follow.” Felton’s maintains professional affiliations with the National Grocers Association, the Florida Retail Federation, and the Food Market Institute, among others. Williams offered, “Our very talented people, skilled in their

areas of expertise, make Felton’s successful. It’s all about quality, freshness, great prices and positive attitudes.” “We enjoy serving this community,” he continued, “and know that God has incredibly blessed our business and our families. Our parents found it satisfying to give back by helping churches, local schools, and especially programs for kids in need -- and so do we. We couldn’t do that if customers didn’t support us and we are so grateful they do.”

Feola Insurance Agency Ralph L. Feola, Sr., CLU, ChFC, LUTCF, RHU The CEO / President and Principal agent of the Feola Insurance Agency, Ralph Feola, Sr., has worn many hats over his more than 31 years as an Allstate agent. And because of the intensive insurance training throughout his career of serving others, the humble business owner can also post the earned PAGE

50

industry designations of CLU, ChFC, LUTCF and RHU after his name. More importantly to Feola, however, is that his tenure, training, and experience have enabled him to not only understand the ins-and-outs of the insurance industry and its products, but also to service

thousands of families regarding their protection needs. “I and my colleagues here at the agency can help you protect the things that are important – your family, home, car, boat and more,” he shared. “And I’m proud to work with a company who’s been serving satisfied customers for 80-plus years.”

Customers count on outstanding financial strength and superior claims service to help protect what they value most. Allstate delivers on their promise, so much in fact that the company has earned an A+ (Superior) rating by A.M. Best. Feola added, “Quality service, strength and satisfaction – that’s

something I’m glad to be a part of. A key to Feola’s success in the Plant City area is his attention to detail and willingness to go the extra mile for his customers. “As a small business owner, I understand the importance of building a solid foundation for the future and developing longlasting customer relationships,” he explained. “That’s why I’m committed to offering the same level of service I’d expect from my own business dealings. When you leave my office, I hope you’ll feel confident, informed and satisfied in your choices – the way you should feel. The agency offers insurance for virtually every need, including: Auto Home Condo Renters Motorcycle Business Life ATV and more! Four other agents serve customers with the same mindset modeled by Ralph, Sr: Paul Chapman for 22 years, Veronica Juan for 13 years, Gary Richardson for 2 years, and Ralph Feola, Jr. One of the features they believe sets the Feola agency apart is that the office phone is answered by real people – no voicemails and no recordings. “We desire to develop relationships,” said Ralph, Sr. “and we believe the personal touch can mean all the difference in the world to customers, current and prospective. Chapman, Ralph’s brother-

in-law, started with the firm on July 5, 1988 and except for a 5-year hiatus, the “down home true Southern-boy” has worked with “longtime Plant Citians, in all walks of industry.” “I love to be able to help people because insurance is such a complex subject,” he explained. “Since Hurricane Andrew and its impact on the industry, we are now allowed to write policies for different companies. This information can be overwhelming to homeowners. We are here to help them purchase the right products and to help them make the most affordable decisions.” “Our business has grown by word-of-mouth referrals,” offered Chapman. “We are proud that the Feola agency has one of the highest retention rates in the business at 92%. We owe that to our loyal customers, the ones we’ve built long-term relationships with. They become our friends and family, too.” Feola’s agents encourage clients to do a “customer protection review” of their insurance coverages once a year. Rate increases with every insurance company are a fact in this industry. What wise customers do is find an agency that provides outstanding service and trust its agents to handle customers’ needs with the utmost care. The Feola Agency supports local community efforts because these are activities, fundraisers, and organizations in which their “client families” are involved. In addition to Plant City Chamber of Commerce membership, Ralph, Sr., is a Kentucky Colonel and

“I and my colleagues here at the agency can help you protect the things that are important – your family, home, car, boat and more...” has been involved with the Elks Lodge and the Loyal Order of Moose. The Florida Southern College graduate has served his industry as a Past President of the American Society of CLU & ChFC and with the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors. Over the years, his agency has received numerous awards and accolades

from Allstate. If you’re in the market for personal or commercial insurance, the Feola Allstate Agency should be on your visit list. Plant City’s hometown agency looks forward to serving you, your family, and your business. Call or stop in today!

First Choice Bar-B-Que

Family owned and operated since 1992 For friendly service and excellent food, make First Choice Southern Bar-B-Que your next dining stop. The owners, Roger Storr and Leland Young, have been friends for over 40 years, and that friendship shows in the friendly atmosphere and hometown feel of their adventure in the barbeque business. Roger and Leland met while both were working at Asgrow, a chemical company. They became friends and worked there together for over 20 years. Since Roger worked in accounting, he could see the PAGE

52

corporate writing on the wall of impending changes, but he wasn’t really sure what that meant for the future of his job. As the friends waited to see what turn the company was going to make, they sensed it would be wise to get something else lined up. They both talked about what they liked to do, which was cook and eat. That’s when First Choice BarB-Que began. The two spent a lot of time in the kitchen, testing and more importantly, tasting recipes. It was a family affair. Roger was born in the

Bahamas but moved to the States when he was 16. “I’m American, and I knew I loved barbecue.” That’s when Roger’s mother would gently suggest the seasonings he would need to make it better. “She would tell me to change it, and she was right just about every time.” They got those recipes together, found a location, and opened in Brandon in 1992. About two years later, the company they both had been working for was purchased by a larger company and they knew their days there were numbered.

Leland was born and raised in Plant City and said that there was no way they would have survived the first five years with First Choice if they had not had a full-time day job. “We would come here before our real job, and then come back at night to do the books and close up.” In those first few years Leland and Roger were also the setup and clean-up crew. While the Brandon location is very popular and does a lot of business, it’s the historic, local, Plant City location the owners are proud to call a hometown

restaurant. Housed in what was once Whataburger, First Choice Bar-B-Que definitely has a hometown ambiance. The most important quality they strive for is consistency. “We are the McDonald’s of barbecue,” said Roger. They want every customer to know they will be able to enjoy their favorites every time they come to the restaurant and know it will taste just as good as it did the last time. Their philosophy is supported when customers who have moved away from the area come back and say, “I’m so glad you’re still open…” or “I’m so glad you

still have the macaroni salad, it tastes just like I remember.” While they are very successful now, it wasn’t always easy. “We had many people tell us we were crazy,” said Leland. “You just can’t give up and you have to trust your instincts,” Roger agreed. They both admit it was a leap of faith, but based on the numbers and the recipes, they knew if they stuck with it, the restaurant was going to work First Choice offers beef, turkey, pork, chicken, corned beef, ribs and sausage. “If you want fish, you gotta go somewhere else.” said Leland. Consistency is key. Customers

return regularly for the everything from the slow grilled slab of ribs cooked on an open pit grill for 3 to 4 hours, to the tender stacks of chicken, sausage, pork, beef, corn beef briskets and turkey slowly cooking to perfection for up to 12 hours. The homemade sides are fresh, never frozen, and equally as delicious as the meat. Choices include baked beans, cole slaw, potato salad, greens, and French fries. While they do not serve macaroni and cheese, the spicy macaroni salad is the one you will come back for and find yourself craving. Another item common to

barbecue restaurants is desserts, but you won’t find any here. “Our customers told us that our portions were so generous they didn’t have any room for dessert,” said Roger. “So that meant they were either throwing it away, or we were eating it all ourselves,” added Leland. Either way the desserts came off the menu and there have been no complaints. Once you try First Choice BarB-Que, it is sure to become your First Choice. Catering services are also available for home or business gatherings. To view menus, visit www.firstchoicebbq.com.

Next, we look at both short-term and long-term objectives and help put their insurance and planning needs in perspective. Our desire is to be their agency for a lifetime.” An Independent Advantage Florida Insurance Center, an independent agency in Plant City, has the freedom to suggest the best carrier for each client’s insurance needs because it is

not tied to any one insurance company. FIC represents a carefully selected group of financially reputable insurers, and therefore can offer customers the best coverage at the most competitive price. Customers today are savvy shoppers and with online access to a wealth

of information, they read and research about their own insurance needs. We want to see their different perspective, to attract and retain them as longterm customers.” According to the company’s Chief Operating Officer, Johnny Read, Sr., CIC, “Individuals today are looking for more than just a policy. They want a relationship with their agency and its staff. And commercial clients want someone to help them grow their business.” The Human Resource services offered by FIC can provide tools for a business owner’s risk management and loss control. Commercial business insurance is an important aspect of any business that cannot be ignored. Brownlee knows that business owners deserve to have confidence that the business they’ve built is covered by a company that understands their insurance needs. “The legal climate is very different now, so this type of service is essential today. We’re pleased our tools can help business owners ensure their enterprise is more secure and profitable.” FIC is pleased to offer Commercial Business Insurance packages that provide wideranging protection for businesses and their subsidiaries under a single policy.

Gould’s Air Conditioning & Heating When you need to beat the Florida heat, or bask in it, look no further than Gould’s Air Conditioning and Heating. Quality, efficient service and honesty is the philosophy that drives their business. Tony Gould, owner, is a Plant City native, so the servicing aspect in his community is the most important to him. He credits Plant City with the success and growth of his business. Many companies in the air conditioning business attempt to “up-sell” the customer on PAGE

air conditioning units and parts. With labor costs added, homeowners or businesses could be looking at another mortgage or possibly having to go without the necessary repair. Tony Gould believes that what sets him apart from other companies is the honesty in the service they provide. “We always look to do the best work at the lowest price.” Gould technicians are not paid on commission. They are trained to complete the service that customers will benefit from. “This approach,” explained the

appreciative Gould, “is what keeps us going.” One of those happy, repeat customers is Lisa Gullinese. “I highly recommend them. They are a hometown company and the only one my family will use.” Gould’s technicians have extensive knowledge and experience with all makes and models including American Standard and Rudd. Another accolade for Gould’s Air Conditioning and Heating is the complete customer satisfaction from beginning to the end of service. They strive

to consistently offer the lowest prices in the Plant City Area. Kelly Ground, a very satisfied customer, was most impressed that the technician was able to keep the house comfortable for her family while he went to get the necessary repair parts. John Kelleher was impressed, too. Gould’s was able to have his unit repaired under the warranty. “As far as I knew, I was on the hook for the repair,” he said, “but the parts needed were under warranty. So, because of their honesty, my A/C was fixed with no cost to me.”

Along with honesty and consistency, customers repeatedly agree that Gould’s is by far the fastest and most efficient air conditioning service around. Gould’s shows up on time to do the job right and in a professional manner. “It matters to us that we are

trusted in our community,” said Gould. In addition to providing service above and beyond what is expected, Gould’s is also wonderful at providing information and education. Although many questions can be answered with a visit to their

website, but the staff never minds personal phone calls. “If I can help you over the phone, I will,” offered Gould. The company also specializes in same day service and 24hour emergency service to both residential and commercial customers.

When you are looking to give your A/C a little TLC, look to Gould’s for quality care at a fair price. For Tony Gould, making Plant City proud, makes him proud.

Proudly Serving Eastern Hillsborough County, including Dover, Plant City, Brandon, Lithia, FishHawk, Riverview, Tampa, Seffner, Mango, Temple Terrace, Thonotosassa, & Antioch Harold’s Farm Supply has been proudly serving Plant City and other eastern Hillsborough County communities for over 40 years. In the friendly and welcoming atmosphere, the company’s customers become like family. Located in Dover, Florida, Harold’s is the place to stop and find what you need for your pet or farm. In 1997, Bill Burnette bought Harold’s Farm Supply from Mr. Harold. Since then, he has expanded his supply store to what you see today. Employees are one of the most important PAGE

parts of the business, according to owner Bill Burnette, who considers them as family, too. Many are high schoolers who go on to be successful in the military, in college, or even in starting their own business. Bill believes that, “it’s a good way for us to influence younger people, and I hope to give them a positive outlook on what is probably their first job. It’s not just about the business, it’s also about giving something back as well.” Bill Burnette has owned Harold’s for 20 years now! Born

and raised in this area, Bill loved it so much he decided to stay. He and his wife Rhonda have three children and four grandchildren. They attend First Baptist Church of Dover and love to spend time outdoors. They raise cattle and Bill reports, “Rhonda raises sheep.” With a laugh he clarified, “I’m not a fan of the sheep.” Rhonda is also the advisor of a local 4-H chapter, Antioch Critters. She has been working with the kids of this chapter for 20 years and they appreciate all she’s done for them. Together, the couple has made a huge

impact on agricultural life and the youth in Plant City. Scotty Jenkins, Bill’s son-inlaw, manages the feed store. In addition, Bill’s father also works with him. This business is truly a family affair. Harold’s Farm Supply has a huge variety of products. They carry a very diverse collection of feed including for cattle, horses, swine, and small animals. Even “Fido” can find treats here! Harold’s even carries garden supplies, fertilizers, grills and fences galore. You’ll find whatever you are looking for at

Harold’s Farm Supply has an impressive inventory of grills for the backyard BBQ-er.

Harold’s Farm Supply. Harold’s Farm Supply also supports the youth of Plant City. In addition to selling products to FFA and 4-H students for their Supervised Agricultural Experience projects, the company also offers scholarships every year. They are involved with the Hillsborough County Fair, the Florida State Fair, and the Florida Strawberry Festival. Harold’s truly loves and supports our community. Harold’s Farm Supply is an amazing community-minded

company that genuinely cares about their customers. In November, they will host a customer appreciation event. Be on the lookout for the date. “Mr. Bill” believes that, “being out in the community is what makes us [Harold’s] who we are.” This is certainly true, as Harold’s makes a difference in our area. Whenever you need animal feed, garden supplies, pet food, and so much more, think about that business located in Dover. Make sure to stop by Harold’s for all your farm supply needs!

Smokers are another popular item at Harold’s Farm Supply.

The bank continues to be locally owned and managed by directors, stockholders and employees with deep community ties that share the same philosophy. Together they have worked to tailor banking services to accommodate the needs of

each individual customer or business – and to not only meet, but to exceed their expectations. While maintaining the hometown values that have brought success, the Hillsboro Bank team has been busy developing new technologies, while remaining focused on the products they offer such as Personal and Business Checking, Money Markets and Savings; Small Business and Consumer Loans; and many other available services.

The Mobile Banking service will help customers with smartphones or tablets to view their balance and history information, transfer funds, pay bills and deposit checks. We will soon be releasing our new website with upgraded bill pay, our new mobile app with remote deposit capture, and we have just released our CardValet app

that can help you manage your debit cards. Services will also include Text Message Banking, Alert Banking and CardValet. Customers will soon have all the conveniences of banking at home, work and during travels. While recognizing the

importance of convenience banking from personal computers or handheld technology, Hillsboro Bank also knows there is a need for personalized banking with a knowledgeable banking representative. With faceto-face banking, customers will establish a valuable relationship with someone they can call when a need or question arises.

Hillsboro Bank prides itself on that personal touch, that a real person will answer all calls and treat all customers with the respect they deserve. City. Three generations of Cordells have enjoyed the experience of providing quality workmanship to homeowners and businesses. John Cordell, Jr. learned the masonry and homebuilding businesses from his father, John, Sr., and has taught the business to his son, Todd, who is the construction manager at Park Place. The Cordells have built homes throughout Hillsborough County to include in Citrus

Landing Plant City, Lake St. Charles in Riverview, among others. In addition, Mr. Cordell’s custom home division – TopCat – has built custom homes to include many in the Wilder Pond development on Mayday Road and Lamp Road in Plant City, in McIntosh Lakes in Dover, and several other Hillsborough County locations. Father and son are onsite, and hands-on hard at work every day. Todd Cordell is following solidly in the family footsteps.

His passion for building quality homes shines through. Every home is his “baby” and he takes great pride in overseeing each detail. The Cordell family’s building future is in good hands! Todd hopes his 6-year-old son Christopher will follow in his footsteps someday as well. Park Place – Quality Homes Built on Large 75-Feet Wide INCLUDED Home Sites Located 20 miles east of Tampa, just three minutes from I-4, off South Frontage Road

between the Alexander/Buchman Highway and Park Road exits. Park Place contains only 100 home sites in an intimate, friendly, gated, deed-restricted community. INCLUDED home sites are at least 75 feet wide, and 111 to up to 220 feet deep, allowing room for a pool. A special option to add to your home in ADDITION to the included attached 2 car garages, is a DETACHED workshop/garage, built with the same quality as your home. The residents have found many uses for these workshops. Many antique car enthusiasts have made their home at Park Place, as well as boaters. And some have turned these extra garage/ workshops into “man caves” and workout rooms. They are large enough for a pool table, too! One thing Park Place takes pride in is that currently five law enforcement officers and their families have chosen Park Place for their family’s home! Mr. Cordell does not believe in

competing in the arena of “price per square foot.” There are plenty of production line, “cookie cutter” mega-builders around. He cares only to compete in the area of quality, value and energy efficiency. JayCor wants people to know that the price of a home is not just what you pay for it. The ultimate price also involves what it will cost to maintain, and what it will be worth in the future. Mr. Cordell builds “Forever Homes!” Pride in workmanship is a company philosophy that encompasses all employees and the company’s subcontractors as well. JayCor has built longstanding, trusted business relationships with local subcontractors over the Cordells’ many years in business. JayCor has flexibility to personalize for each customer. Visitors mention frequently how few residences look alike. Homes at Park Place are all different and special because JayCor offers a wide variety of choices for

buyers. These include flooring, countertops, cabinets brick, paint and much more. Home sizes range from 3BR 2 BA just under 1,600 sq. ft. to 5BR 4 BA with more than 3,300 sq. ft. (under air). Each energy-efficient home is fueled by natural gas and INCLUDES a tankless natural gas hot water heater. The community is gated and deed restricted, but regulations are not overly onerous, just enough to keep things nice and maintain your property values. Residents are allowed to have fences and park a pick-up truck in their driveway. Notably, the current HOA fees are only $250 annually and there is NO CDD fees! If you’re in a hurry, beautiful appointed “MOVE IN READY” homes are available today. If you prefer to build with a little customization, the community representatives will help you make the selections your family desires.

Keel & Curley Winery— Plant City’s Event Place Agriculture tourism, Biertoberfest and more! Keel and Curley Winery offers a lot to the Plant City community. When blueberry farmer Joe Keel wondered what to do with his end-of-the-crop-cycle berries in 2003, he used them to make 10 gallons of blueberry wine. 20,000 cases of wine annually. The company creates sweet, semi-dry and dry blueberry wines which are sold by the glass, bottle and case. They have branched out into making several other fruit-based wines: Strawberry Riesling, Wildberry Pinot Noir, Tangerine Tango Zinfandel, Key West—Key Lime,

Sangria, Peach chardonnay and Black-raspberry Merlot. “We started Two Henrys Brewing four years ago and it has continually grown to include our four core craft beers on tap at all times and regular rotation of four other crafts,” said Alicia Keel, co-owner with her husband, Joe Keel. “The popular

beers are Gilded Age Lager, Belleview Biltmore Blueberry Vanilla Wheat, 7-Mile Bridge IPA, Jameson Steamboat and Blueberry Roasted Jalapeńo.” Two years ago, they began making Two Henrys Hard Ciders, “another very well-liked item,” said Alicia Keel. “They have quickly grown in popularity.”

Ciders on tap include blueberry, strawberry, mango, elderberry, pineapple, apple, and the newest and current crowd favorite, strawberry lime. Their fifth annual Biertoberfest with special-release Germanstyle beers, German food and German music, will take place Sept. 30. Staff (and patrons, if they wish) will wear traditional German attire and the brewmaster will issue challenges. The family-friendly establishment includes a

swing set and grassy spaces for children to run and play, and Railcar 91 offers a variety of non-alcoholic beverages, appetizers, salads, burgers, tacos, sandwiches, wings and sweets by table service. Southern and classic rock bands, jazz ensembles and other musical acts entertain audiences and get them dancing from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights outside on Keel and Curley’s covered veranda. In addition to music nights,

there are many other things to do at Keel and Curley, such as yoga, trivia and karaoke. An up-to-date calendar of events at KeelAndCurleyWinery.com lists them all. The winery hosts a free, annual Blueberry Festival each spring with food and craft vendors, entertainment and a children’s area with inflatables and other fun activities. The public is invited to make reservations to join tours and tastings and food-and-wine-

Lacy Brown Specialty Advertising, LLC Celebrating 40 Years Family-Owned & Operated Every great business started with a small story. McDonald’s started with a burger. Disney started with a mouse. For Lacy Brown Specialty Advertising, a family-owned and operated advertising business providing promotional items for more than 40 years, their story started with a shoebox. When Stephanie Farmer started working for her parents in 1976, Lacy and Norma Kay Brown would collect sales orders and receipts within a shoebox. Her parents had her help with their business, starting with filing catalogs at age 10, before moving on to other jobs, such as typing orders and cleaning their warehouse. Following graduation, Farmer hit the road on her own as a commissions saleslady, but later left (although still helping from time to time) to raise a family. She returned in 2010 to take over the family business. Whereas she started helping her father with odd jobs for his business, she now has him doing most of those side jobs as she runs the business herself. “I love the fact that daddy and I work together, and it’s a family business with good people,” Farmer said. For the past 40 years, her business has been helping others market themselves with a diverse array of promotional items, with her family business now offering more than one million items, including pens, baseball caps, USB drives, and even fidget spinners. What sets Lacy Brown Specialty Advertising apart from other marketing services has been the personalized service to offer items for customers’ own personal touch and the personable human communication. “When it comes to sales, you won’t be dealing with a person sitting in front of a computer wearing a headset or trying to navigate a website,” shared Stephanie. “You will be working with me, the owner, following our family tradition of personalized service.” PAGE

70

Stephanie’s mother passed away in November of 2015. The daughter is proud to continue the legacy started by her parents 40 years ago.

Farmer works one-on-one with her clients to provide personalized items, ensuring customers receive something that reflects their message without having to do all that work themselves. Whether you have a cuttingedge logo or artwork to use for your own promotion or you need someone to help you out in the art department, Lacy Brown Specialty Advertising will provide everything you need while doing the work for you. “People can go online and buy promotion products, but here’s the problem with that: if you do all the work I do, that

takes time away from your ability to run your own business...so it helps to have me step through the door and take care all of specialty advertising ideas for you,” Farmer said. When it comes to promoting her customers, Farmer always comes up with new, creative ideas to help them stand out from everyone else. Anyone can create a USB drive with a custom logo, but Farmer went the extra mile to create USBs that looked like squad cars for the Florida Sheriff Association to give away during a trade show. Other organizations the

company has assisted include the Florida Strawberry Growers Association, Future Farmers of America, and Diamond R Fertilizer, the latter of whose employee has highly recommended as both a business partner and a close friend. “If you’re looking for a company to do any type of marketing materials you could imagine...I couldn’t possibly give a higher rating to Stephanie Farmer,” wrote Layla Keeler Drawdy in an online testimonial. “Everyone could learn something from [her]. Thorough, prompt, affordable, extremely honest

and kind. I’ve made more than a good contact with her. I’ve gained a dear friend and I love her! I’m blessed to have her in my life.” For more information, call 813-659-0701, or visit the website at lacybrownspecialties. com to see the wide variety of available products, including many made exclusively in the USA

Level Seven Graphics

Graphic Design, Custom Printing, and Screen Printing. When Michael Pippin follows a calling, he follows through. From strawberries, to youth ministry, to creative art and thinking, Level Seven Graphics was born. Michael Pippin grew up in the strawberry fields of Plant City, so graphics seems a far leap for a career. His father Ron, taught him everything he needed to know through lessons in farming. “My dad really taught me how to think outside the box, to be a problem-solver,” Michael shared. Though his dad was a farmer, he was a creative thinker. That PAGE

72

creativity led to inventiveness. The Pippin family did not grow only strawberries; they also grew bell peppers. A major problem with growing bell peppers can occur when the Florida weather becomes volatile just before harvest time. The wind and rain can cause plants to fall over, ruining the peppers in the hot sun. To solve this problem an efficient method of staking the bell pepper plants was created. “It doesn’t seem like a big deal, but no one was staking peppers at the time.” The year they staked their plants for the

first time was the year a major hurricane wreaked havoc upon most farming communities in Florida. Carl Pippin and Sons Farms was one of the few farms in the state that had bell peppers to harvest. That year, farmers from all over started showing up to learn about this new technique. It was puzzling to Michael that his father would share his secrets with others. It was Ron’s philosophy that if someone wanted to learn, then he would help them. “He taught me that you reap what you sow,” said Pippin.

“It was following instinct and doing what he knew was right even though it may not have been popular that made his father successful, and it was instinct that led Michael to follow his heart into youth ministry, even though it may not have been a popular choice. His parents were Christians and he grew up in church. It was at a church youth camp that he received the vision, “clear as day,” to go into the ministry. His reason for following his heart is straightforward. “No one knows true joy until they know Christ.” It was the deep

desire of Michael’s heart to share this with the next generation. It was through the ministry that he found his outlet for his own inventiveness and creativity. Currently, a student ministry pastor at The Crossings Church in Brandon, Michael found the need to use social media to fill needs within the ministry. “We have a website, we pass out brochures newsletters, you name it. I am a self-taught graphic artist.” Another lesson from the farm was that sometimes money is tight and you can’t get a replacement, so you have to fix it yourself. From self-taught to success, Level Seven Graphics is a thriving, hometown, Plant City business. Believing that art is the mark of this generation, combining his love for both art and reaching youth seemed a perfect fit to lead him into the field of graphic design. Whatever your needs are — business cards, screen printing, embroidery, or signs -- Level Seven Graphics has the original design to fit your needs. “I have to say, that what sets us apart is originality,” said Pippin. He uses

his own designs and strives to provide service you won’t get anywhere else. If you have driven around Plant City, then you have seen their work. Level 7 Graphics has created designs and apparel for Cork Elementary, Tomlin Middle, Plant City High School, Pinecrest Pilots, RAOK fashion boutique, and many others. “We love our community and we love to give back,” Pippin said. They have done work for the Relay for Life and offer discounts to churches, youth organizations, and community organizations. The goal at Level Seven Graphics is unparalleled customer service. “We truly believe in making the customer happy and providing honest service,” Pippin said. It is that sense of community pride, customer service and inventiveness that will make Level Seven Graphics your design and printing team. Sister-in-laws, Becki Smith and Leanne Smith Peacock, devote their time as founders for the Next Generation Home Care business that has been going strong for almost a year. Their company’s foundation is built on their passion for serving people, specifically the elderly. This was more than simply a business idea they wanted to pursue, they strived to make a difference in

the healthcare world. Leanne Smith Peacock grew up in Plant City watching her beloved parents, Reverend James and Judy Smith, work as a team to serve others in need. Her father has just retired as Chaplain at South Florida Baptist Hospital. Her mother dedicated most of her time towards taking care of Leanne’s late grandfather, who passed away in August of 2016. The seed of watching two strong people sacrificing their lives to meet the needs of others has grown in her throughout life. Leanne is also a breast cancer survivor, so she has experienced first-hand the struggles of enduring a life change and entering a very vulnerable stage that required her dependence on caretakers. Through this and from the impact of her parents’ lives, she has learned how the value of life. Becki Smith shares that common passion with Leanne. When living in North Carolina, Becki worked with a similar company and wanted to bring that passion to Plant City. She knew they would work well together because both she and Leanne have the same mindset with regards to caregiving. The idea of starting a caregiver business has been germinating for the past several years but has now bloomed into reality. Becki married into the love for Plant City. She fell in love with the town’s communityminded folks who were always on the go to serve others. Becki desires to add her passion with all of Plant City’s compassion through their business. Leanne and Becki aim to provide families with caregivers for their family members when

a crisis happens and families may not know where to turn. They understand that so much can happen with life when it comes to careers, taking care of younger children, and being involved with the community. Professional caregivers can provide families a chance to do all those things with the reassurance that their parents, aunts, uncles etc., are receiving excellent care. The caregivers hired by Next Generation must first go through an interview process that can take up to a few months. Leanne and Becki have high expectations of their W2 employees, which is why they don’t use contract labor. In addition to thorough background checks, references are checked for attributes such as “kindness, honesty and conscientiousness.” “We pay the caregivers and withhold the required amounts for income taxes, Social Security, Medicare, Workers Compensation and Unemployment Insurance,” explained Becki. “While some families believe they can find their own caregiver and treat him/her as an independent contractor, State of Florida laws do not support that.” Leanne added, “If you don’t want to deal with the liabilities of hiring a private caregiver, let us do the hiring, training, supervising and paying of your caregiver. Additionally, we can provide insurance coverage to cover any damages our caregivers might inadvertently cause in your home. We take all the risk — so you can focus on the caregivers

taking good care of you or your loved one.” Next Generation Home Care caregivers are required to be experienced, with specialized training in Dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Stroke recovery and post-hospitalization care. Plant City Airport Services A Great Flight School Choice! For Tampa Bay area residents interested in learning to fly or rent a plane, Plant City Airport Services is a great choice! Plant City Airport Services is the licensed fixed-base operator (FBO) which provides services to pilots and those needing flight-related assistance. VicePresident Martin Pure has served as PCAS operations manager since his father, Stanley Pure, assumed operations in 2004 from the prior FBO principal, David Mitchell. “Dad was a pilot with several planes that he used to help PAGE

another company. When this opportunity became available, we decided to give it our best,” explained Martin. “We feel it’s been a great decision.” The Plant City Airport [PCM} is a general aviation airport and part of the Tampa International Airport system, along with Tampa Executive Airport [VDF; formerly Vandenberg] in East Tampa and Peter O’Knight [TPF] on Davis Islands. The smaller municipal airports relieve light GA aircraft traffic around TIA. PCM and Plant City Airport Services staffers are especially

busy during the Sun n’ Fun Fly-in at nearby Lakeland Regional Airport and during the Florida Strawberry Festival. The team enjoys displaying hospitality to visitors by assisting with rental cars and recommendations for hotels and restaurants. The PCAS staff Martin oversees includes: one mechanic, four “line guys” – who park planes, pump fuel and assist wherever needed -- and seven part-time certified flight instructors. As to what they enjoy most, he shared, Pilots enjoy a special camaraderie, helping

them enjoy their hobby is what PCAS and I is all about. Currently, 90 planes are either tied down on the hard top, or housed in the hangars, which fills the maximum space available. The property is owned by HCAA. The FBO has requested from the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority that more hangars be built. That request will be under serious consideration in upcoming HCAA planning and budget sessions.

Plant City Airport Services offers: • Full Service Fuel – Avgas and Jet A • Hangars and Tiedowns • Passenger Terminal and Lounge • Vending Machines • Courtesy Transportation • Pilots Lounge / Snooze Room • Internet Access • Rental Cars • Restrooms and Showers • After-Hours Services Available • Airplane Rental • Pilot Shop • Weather Room • Aerial Tours • On-Site Aircraft Maintenance

Learn to Fly The private pilot certificate (PPL) is like your driver’s license. It’s the first step for those interested in an aviation career and a must for those who simply want to fly recreationally. A private pilot can fly an airplane and carry passengers (friends, family, co-workers, etc.), but not for compensation or hire. They can, however, share the operating expenses with those traveling together. This extensive training program gives students a solid foundation in aerodynamics, meteorology, and hands-on flight experience. Your first flight lesson with PCAS is only $49!

Community Events Each year the annual Planes, Trains, and Automobiles event presented by the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce is held at the Plant City Airport. One exciting element of that family fun day is the “Young Eagle” introductory flights for children. Due to popular demand, the airport staff will assist certified pilots for the August 19 “makeup” day, for those young ones who were unable to take the flight during the 9th annual event. “We look forward to this special outreach each year,” offered Martin. “It allows us to give back to the community and has helped bring attention to the airport. We are always surprised

to learn than many Plant City residents are unaware we’re here.” Plant City Airport Services also wants folks to know that Chapter 1178 of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) meets here on the third Saturday monthly at 9AM. The group welcomes guests to attend and learn more. Visit PCM and PCAS Plant City Airport Services looks forward to helping you learn to fly or rent a plane. The job was done quickly, professionally, and reasonably priced. I exercise there every morning.” Frank Cummings, owner of Walden Lake Car Wash, agrees. “We’ve hired Larry for several different projects and highly recommend his company. He’s competitively priced and scheduled work after hours for our customers’ convenience. He follows up and even after a year, stops in to make sure we’re still pleased. Larry takes a lot of pride in his work. You could definitely call it ‘old-fashioned craftsmanship.”

Recent reviews on the BBB website include the following: Dolores K. wrote: “Very pleased with my new screenedin patio. Kept me informed from permit to finish.” Brian S. reported: “A neighbor contracted with Larry and Plant City Awning and had a great experience, so we did the same. I’m glad we did. Larry was very prompt and knowledgeable. The screen room we had installed came out wonderful and we are loving it! I wouldn’t hesitate one second to refer anyone to Larry and his crew if they want any aluminum/screen work done.” David W. shared: “I have had two great experiences with Plant City Awning and Aluminum. Three years ago, they installed a wonderful carport, so when I needed some railings redone, they were my first choice. Larry J. and his crew were great to work with. Rebeka M. in the Keysville area posted on Facebook at

Smokin’ Aces BBQ It’s All Good While many families across the United States attempt to start businesses and achieve the “American Dream,” one Plant City family has been able to make theirs come true – by opening a food truck! Since that small beginning, the business has now grown into two restaurants – one in Plant City and the other in Lakeland. Smokin’ Aces BBQ (and Smokin’ Aces Steakhouse in Plant City) began with a big dream and a humble start by the Jordan family in 2012. Robert Jordan, along with his wife Trish, PAGE

and their children— Robbie, Josh, and Jenny—utilized Robert’s grilling skills in starting a cash-only food truck business on U.S. 92. They credit the generous help of friends Tammy and Chad Gasaway, Lawson’s Hardware of Plant City, and Robert’s own father, Edward. Initially open only two days a week, the business grew slowly to serve customers five days a week. This happened with the help of Mo and Jerry, the owners of Mozart, who allowed the Jordans to set up their food trucks on their lot at the corner of

County Line Road and U.S. 92. When the County Zoning department told the Jordans in December of 2013 that due to county laws they would need to leave the corner. At first they felt hopeless, but then Joe and Alicia Keel of Keel & Curley Winery invited them to set their food trucks up there. With positive reviews from Keel & Curley visitors, the Keels offered the Jordans to become the full-time food provider there. While set up at the winery fulltime from January 2014 through February 2016, the family

business was able to expand, establishing its first Smokin’ Aces restaurant in Lakeland in September of 2014. One year later, they opened a second in August of 2015. At Smokin’ Aces Steakhouse in Plant City customers were now able to enjoy delicious steak, seafood, and barbeque. Maintaining two restaurants and a food truck required plenty of hard-work and long hours, but the team effort brought great results. As Robert’s wife Trish and family-friend Tammy Gasaway worked at the Lakeland

location, remaining Jordan family members worked at the Plant City location and food truck, and many employees worked at more than one location, all three venues continued to produce great food, great customer service, and even more loyal support through its eventcatering. In February of 2016 the food truck left Keel and Curley Winery, and earlier this year, they franchised the Lakeland restaurant to one of their cooks, Michael Fox and his girlfriend, Morgan Conte. In five years of operation, the Smokin’ Aces enterprises have won various awards and competitions. The Kansas City Barbeque Society member took “First Place – Ribs” in 2015 out of 77 contestants at Pig Jam, a local barbeque event attracting hundreds of vendors and thousands of foodies annually. In addition, they’ve also won ‘Best Wings” in 2015 and 2016, and “Best Steak” in 2016 and 2017 in the Plant City Focus Magazine Reader’s Choice Awards competition. At the Lakeland Chamber of Commerce “King of the Wings” contest, Smokin’ Aces won the People’s Choice Award in 2016 and 2017. And for those who check reviews, Smokin’ Aces Steakhouse is a top-rated restaurant on TripAdvisor for Plant City Smokin’ Aces has also received attention on the radio, with pit-master Robert Jordan going on-air several times at “102.5 The Bone” to interview the renowned Ian Beckles about his cooking techniques and passion for the business. The Plant City restaurant also offers a “Heroes’ Discount” of 15% off for all military, police, firefighters, doctors, nurses, paramedics, and teachers. Robert Jordan described his feelings about the family’s success, saying, “While our slogan says, ‘It’s all good,’ our business would not be that way without the help of good friends, neighbors, and loyal customers.” He continued, “Anyone with a passion and a drive can make their dreams come true, and while our business continues to flourish, we are still brand new in the restaurant business. We hope that with continued hard-work, dedicated employees, supportive friends, and loyal guests of our establishments, we can remain one of the best and only familyowned and operated restaurants along I-4 in the region.”

Not only has community support sustained the Wilsons’ restaurant, it also allowed them to expand. They launched their second Strawberry Hut, in Lakeland, in February 2015. That location has climate-controlled, indoor dining that seats up to 100 people. PAGE

To celebrate and thank their patrons, between Tuesday, Sept. 12, and Saturday, Sept. 16, every 24th customer at the Plant City and Lakeland locations will receive one of the following prizes: a free six-inch sandwich, 16-ounce milkshake, breakfast sandwich, bowl of soup, hurricane, chef salad or Greek salad. The Wilsons do this every year for the store’s anniversary, and they purposely postpone the celebration until people are back in town after their summer vacations.

“We appreciate the patronage of our faithful customers,” said Wilson. “We would like to thank all the people that have left so many great reviews for the Strawberry Hut and even posted pictures of our food, encouraging others to eat here.” She went on to say, “I am not sure who voted for us, but we want to say thanks to all who voted and helped us to get on the list of the top 11 sandwich shops in the State of Florida, ranking in at number six (www. onlyinyourstate.com/florida/bestsandwiches-fl).”

Tire and Auto customers, even before taking complete ownership in 1994. Inlow had previously worked in the business’ storefront selling automobile parts during high school, and again part time while pursuing his engineering degree. Over the past 23 years under Inlow’s leadership, Super Service Tire and Auto has grown immensely, now offering virtually all automotive services. “One thing about our shop here, we do just about everything,” said Inlow. The shop offers brake, fuel

injection, transmission, oil change, and machine shop services, just to name a few. Service Tire and Auto also serves customers with new and used tires, and tire balancing, rotation, repair, and alignments. Additionally, the shop sells and installs performance parts to replace factory components which help improve a vehicle’s power, handling, and fuel economy. In other words, Super Service Tire and Auto is truly a one-stop shop for all your automotive needs.

Between his stints at Super Service Tire and Auto during high school and college, Inlow left the business for a career in the refrigeration and electrical industry. But something always seemed to pull him back to the Plant City auto shop—his love for automobiles and his passion for helping others in the community. “My father was involved in automotive since I was a young child, so you can say I was raised in this business,” said Inlow. “I’ve just always felt comfortable and confident around cars. A lot of customers are very appreciative about what we’re able to do here, and that makes me feel really good. It’s very gratifying.” Large corporations and discount auto centers have

caused several family-owned and independent automobile shops across the country to shut down over the years. However, Inlow’s ability to expand the business while remaining loyal to customers has allowed Super Service Tire and Auto to grow during changing economic times. The business truly goes above and beyond to ensure a job well done.

“When you come as a new customer, we want to make sure we win you over and you keep coming back,” said Inlow. “We want to take care of your car for years to come, whether you need an oil change, new tires, or if your water pump is leaking. We like to tend to all your needs, your family’s needs, and your friend’s needs...When you come to us, you’re not a number.

You’re a person with a problem, and we’re here to resolve it.” So, whether you need a simple tune up, a total engine repair, or just have a question about your vehicle, stop by Super Service Tire and Auto. It’s their joy to take good care of you.

Uncle G’s Bed & Biscuit Is the Cat’s Meow Where your dog is our dog To understand Uncle G’s Bed & Biscuit pet boarding and grooming facility, you need to know its people. They are crazy about critters. The owners, Diane and Mark Krieger, are naturals at taking care of dogs. They have oodles of their own at home. Most are rescued dachshunds, for whom they established their own rescue called Wienerville. The others are big dogs that people brought them or that they found abandoned. PAGE

The dogs are “with us every minute when we are home,” said Diane. “Wieners are not our whole life; they make our life whole.” Their animal-care mottos at home—and at Uncle G’s— include: Dogs need a television on when the Kriegers are not there. If you would not drink the water, the dog should not. Every dog is special. Everybody knows these commands: outside, dinner time, nite-nite, snack time, play time and toy time. “So, we have a family at the

kennel when people bring their dogs, and one at home, and they’re treated the same,” said Diane Krieger. “We board birds, rabbits and tea-cup pigs, too, and consider all of them our kids while they’re with us.” “We put the animals first,” said Mark Krieger. “Their wellbeing is our utmost concern.” A 12-year-old lab arrived this summer from up north. Since she could not breathe comfortably in the Central Florida heat and humidity, she stayed in the cat room near the front desk, so they

could keep an eye on her. The staff is devoted to dogs and fanatical about felines— altogether passionate about animals. Senior kennel managers Arlette Bonner and Ginger Bonner have worked there 12 years and know most of the frequent barkers (meow-ers, tweeters and oinkers) by face and personality. They play with them, feed them, walk the dogs at least four times a day and can handle any emergency. “All the credit goes to the people who work here,” said

They make decisions based on individual animals’ temperaments. A 200-pound bull mastiff stayed at Uncle G’s for six months while his new home was built. Mark Krieger said that although he looked big and bad, he was a sweetheart. The fenced, five-acre, farmlike compound provides plenty of space for dogs to cavort. Each pooch has its own long, open run, partly indoors and partly outdoors (but covered). Inside, they have air and cable television. Before the staff leaves for the night, they give each animal a treat and clean bedding. “We are so different from other kennels,” said Diane

Krieger. “You cannot work here unless you love animals, love caring for them and are always alert and watching.” The Kriegers honor the former owners, Gary, Virginia and Matthew Noonan, by continuing their legacy of cleanliness, safety, military discounts, Frequent Barker Card and Grooming

BUSINESS FOCUS

Creative Flower Designs by Glenn When customers walk into Creative Flower Designs by Glenn, they are greeted instantly with a smile, along with the smell of fresh flowers. Behind the counter, more often than not, is Glenn Mathias, the man who started it all. Making flower arrangements was something Glenn enjoyed doing as a hobby. It wasn’t until a friend dared him to open a flower shop, that it became a career. “I didn’t know where I wanted to go to school so this was easy to get around all that,” Glenn said. “But once I started the company, I enjoyed it very much.” Being born and raised in Plant City, Glenn opened his first shop

on Wheeler Street 37 years ago. Although he’s moved locations a few times, he never left his hometown. “The people in Plant City have been very good to me,” he said, “and I’ve been very fortunate with my business here.” With his fortune and success, comes a lot of work and Glenn doesn’t do it alone. His staff helps keep customers very happy. He describes his staff as more of a family, since some have been with him for two decades and through hard times. “I had a heart attack a couple of years ago,” Glenn said. “And they took over for me and really worked hard for a year so I could get over that.” The staff not only works hard.

They truly love what they do. “We send these beautiful creations out to customers and it makes them happy, so ours is a happy, happy job,” employee Sally Schaffer. In addition to the shop’s large inventory of fresh flowers, Creative Flower Designs by Glenn specializes in the following services: • Tropical • Plants • European/dish gardens • Contemporary and traditional arrangements • High-style floral • arrangements • Silk arrangements • Dried floral arrangements • Weddings

• Funeral designs • Extensive gift line • Gourmet, fruit, and gift baskets • Greeting cards • Candles The company delivers in Plant City, Seffner, Turkey Creek, Lithia, and Dover. f you are financing the purchase of a home, your first step should be to find out whether you qualify for a mortgage, and the second step should be to pinpoint how much you can afford. Both of those steps can be accomplished by getting prequalified. Before you do so, here’s the most important thing to remember about a mortgage prequalification: A prequalification at one place does not equal one at another. Since a prequalification is a simple, quick process, the amount of money you are told that you can borrow does not necessarily mean you will get approved by an underwriter for that amount. Many places will glance at your financial picture and ramble off a loan amount. This is a flawed process that can lead to heartache when you put an offer on a house, only to discover later you cannot get a big enough loan to buy it. The more-accurate way is to figure out how much of a monthly

mortgage payment you can afford, as it typically includes principal, homeowner’s insurance, taxes and possibly mortgage insurance. For instance, two homes cost the same amount to buy, but one has higher insurance and property taxes. The house carrying higher insurance and taxes would have a higher monthly mortgage payment. If they were high enough, then it could be too costly for your monthly budget. Diligent mortgage loan officers will prequalify you based off of a monthly payment after reviewing your tax returns, pay stubs, credit report and/or any other relevant documentation (each person’s situation is different, so some documentation may or may not be required). The Florida Mortgage Firm requires its loan officers to be thorough and diligent with the prequalification process. If you have any questions about this, call us at 813.707.6200.

were 12 sales in Walden Lake and 1 sale in Walden Lake East. The average sale price of those homes was $236,962, with an average of 45 days on the market. This month, all but 3 of the sales sold for over $200,000. There are currently 22 active listings for sale in Walden Lake and Walden Lake East with an average list price of $344,752 and an average of 68 days on the market. Two of the homes are in Polo Place and if you eliminate those 2 listings, the average list price would be $284,977. There are 14 properties Pending Contract with an average list price of $270,000 and average of 29 days on the market. The market continues to remain strong for homes that are priced well and in good condition. The

Athlete of the Month Avery Surrency BY TARYN STORTER

she shared. Those she looks up to encourage her to improve herself and her skills so she will someday be a cheerleader that girls all across the world will want to emulate. Outside of cheerleading, Avery is a member of the National FFA Organization. She shows sheep and rabbits at various fairs and festivals, but her favorite FFA experiences involve public speaking. She has participated in many public oratorical contests through the FFA Organization and earned awards at the state level. Avery isn’t just a star on the cheerleading mats. She also shines on the pageant stage, receiving such pageant titles as 2012 Little Miss Plant City Court, Jr. Royalty Baroness, Duchess, Princess, Pre-teen Blueberry Queen, 2016 Jr. Harvest Queen, among others. Pageants allow Avery to improve her skills in public speaking, too. Advice that Avery would give to younger athletes is to “Never give

up!” She believes that as long as you believe in yourself and give 110% effort, you can do anything. She offered, “Never let someone tell you you’re not good enough or that you cannot achieve something, because as long as you put your mind to it, nothing and no one can stand in your way.” Avery’s plans for the future are to continue cheerleading throughout high school and possibly even after. She will strive to make varsity cheer every year at Durant High School and also continue on her competitive cheer team. Avery wants to always better herself and continue to improve her tumbling and stunting skills. Avery Surrency is an incredible young lady who loves the sport that not only allows students to stay active, but helps them build skills they need for life. In the future, you just may see Avery cheering for your favorite college team.

Avery, a freshman Durant High School cheerleader, loves to cheer, as well as play volleyball and basketball.

A

very Surrency, a Durant High School freshman, is an amazing athlete and student. She has just earned her spot on the Durant Varsity cheerleading squad and is excited for the next four years as a Cougar. Throughout her childhood, Avery tried many sports, including soccer, gymnastics, and softball. Even during her middle school years, Avery played basketball, volleyball, and ran track, but as she reflected, “none of these sports compared to how I feel about cheer.” Avery has been cheerleading for seven years and says she PAGE

never wants to stop. As a veteran cheerleader on the Storm All-Stars Cheer team, she is a role model for many younger girls. When discussing her favorite sport, Avery expressed, “The rush you get every time you step out on stage is overwhelming, yet so amazing.” Avery is ecstatic about starting her cheerleading career at Durant High School as a part of the Durant Varsity Cheer team. She’s constantly inspired by the world of cheerleading. “The best tumblers, amazing stunters, and incredible leaders motivate me to get better and better every day,”

Avery is a flyer for the Storm All-Star Cheer team.

Sports Team of the Month Plant City All Stars

Winners - Every One! BY TARYN STORTER

In late July, the team won the State championship, and most recently placed 2nd in the Southeastern U.S. when they competed in the Tournament of the Champions at Greenville, N.C.

T

he Plant City Little League 10-11 All-Star team members were winners everywhere they went! Recently, the team won the State Title in the 9-11 age group. Then, when they traveled to Greenville, North Carolina for the Tournament of the Champions on August 2, they placed 2nd in the Southeastern United States. What an honor - and a great representation for their hometown. This All-Star team was announced June 1, 2017, and after a couple of weeks of practice, their season began in mid-June. Although their time together consisted of many tough tournaments and grueling practices, they testify to many fun times as well. The team won District, Sectional, and State Tournaments. Of the first nine tournaments played, they won all nine. Until the final game in the Tournament of the

PAGE

104

Champions, these All-Stars had not lost a game this entire season! For many of these team members, baseball isn’t just a sport, it’s a lifestyle. Most of the boys have played baseball since they were five years-old and have played travel baseball since age eight. Baseball is a passion for a great number of young men in Plant City, with many opportunities for fans to play ball here in Plant City – beginning with T-ball, then on to Little League, All-Stars, and even high school or college. This All-Star team was fortunate to have many adults who sacrificed their time to make a positive difference in these youngsters’ lives. Team manager, Mike Palestrini, is one of those, as were coaches DJ Brewington and Andy Rowland. In addition to the official coaches, many parents held team meetings, provided snacks and drinks, shared

rides to/from practice, and even coached. The team certainly appreciates their support and dedication. Tanner Rollyson explained his experience on the team, “Lots of hard work and training has helped us be successful. We all work together as a team and aren’t selfish for individual goals. Most of us have been together since T-Ball, and we really enjoy each other.” The team’s absolute favorite memory of the year would be winning the State title for the 9-11 age range and having the opportunity to represent Florida in the Tournament of the State Champions. This was a very big honor, since they had opportunity to go up against many tough competitors from all over the Southeast. Rhett Rollyson, a parent and unofficial coach for the team,

believed the entire team contributed to the team’s success, and he is excited to see what the boys will do in the future. After many months of hard work, the Plant City Little League AllStars team placed 2nd overall in the entire Southeastern United States! Whenever you see a team member, make sure to congratulate them on a job well done! The team includes Deven Gonzalez, Colby Brewington, Anthony Palestrini, Adan Longoria, Blaine Rowland, Tanner Rollyson, Austin Trimble, Adrian Avelar, Levi Jordan, CW Watson and Seth Hogan. Keep an eye out for these young men! Stay tuned, maybe next summer they will win their way to the Little League World Series.

Be Inspired! Visit The Art of the Brick The free exhibit will be open through Sept. 4 BY BARBARA ROUTEN

The “In Pieces” area highlights a collaboration between Sawaya and artist Dean West. It contains West’s paintings and the LEGO-brick props that became elements in the paintings. Photography and video filming are allowed at The Art of the Brick, and posting on social media is strongly encouraged. Be prepared: You may have to wait in line outdoors. About 50 people at a time are let into the

air-conditioned, ADA accessible building. The exhibit hall has restrooms with baby-changing facilities. Strollers and small bags, subject to search, are allowed but food and beverages are not. Parking is available nearby at lime and purple parking lots for a dollar per vehicle when 81379 is entered in the automated parking meter. For more visitor information, see artofthebricktampa.com.

f you love LEGO bricks, art, history, dinosaurs or whimsy, The Art of the Brick is an experience you won’t want to miss. The Art of the Brick is a free, temporary exhibit of LEGO-brick sculptures at 802 E. Whiting Street, Tampa. It is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. However, the final day of the exhibit will be Monday, Sept. 4, because it is Labor Day. Artist Nathan Sawaya, a former corporate lawyer who got his first LEGO building system at age five, makes his living fashioning ordinary LEGO bricks into anything he can imagine. Per LEGO.com, he is the world’s only LEGO Master Builder and LEGO Certified Professional. “Art makes better humans,” said a Sawaya quote on a plaque. “Art is necessary in understanding the world and art makes people happy. Undeniably, art is not optional.” The Paint by Bricks section contains the artist’s LEGO replicas of works by classical painters such

PAGE

108

as Van Gogh, Monet and Rembrandt and reproductions of geometric pieces by Kazimir Malevich and Paul Klee. Sawaya created 3-D sculptures of famous paintings--the one known as “Whistler’s Mother,” by James McNeill Whistler, and “American Gothic,” by Grant Wood. Popular culture helped Sawaya learn about important things as a child—gravity from Slinky, counting to 10 from “Sesame Street” and adjectives from “Schoolhouse Rock!” The artist hopes children today will learn art history from LEGO. A large tyrannosaurus rex, cave drawing of a horse, miniature Sphynx, moai (Easter Island “head”) and Grecian urn represent ages past. Copies of Indian, African, Roman and Chinese works are also on display. Sawaya’s original pieces includes pencils, umbrellas, flipflops and many whimsical, humanlike statues.

“Everlasting” contains 10,584 red LEGO bricks and measures 105-by-85-by-30 cm. “Love lives forever. It outlives youth and a flat stomach and a full head of hair. And that’s what makes it beautiful,” says the object label in front of it.

Nathan Sawaya’s Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton, made completely of LEGO bricks, is about 20-feet long.

C

heck out the back-to-school buying advice and find the best student laptops, smart phones, tablets and other high-tech gear. Plus, check out the top app picks for students, free software, and must-have gadgets for the high school year. The new tablet or phone you’re bringing to school isn’t just for sharing photos on Instagram or checking Twitter. Your device can also be a great study partner. Whether you’re looking to take better notes and sync them with the clou,d or you’re trying to crack a mind-bending math problem, the right apps can be a big help. Bringing a phone to school, tablets, high-tech gear, software, and syncing with a cloud? What? Back when I entered high school in 1977, how in the world would you bring a phone to school when it was attached to the wall at your house? A tablet was a pad of paper to write on or a pill to swallow; high-tech gear was on the floorboard of the car; software— was that anything like Tupperware? And syncing with a cloud…was that a druginduced state or just a good night’s sleep? If you needed to take better notes, then you moved to the front row of your class, sharpened your number two pencil and listened closely. If you needed a great study partner, then you made friends with a nerdy honor student. Where in the world are we today? My, how times have changed! Our school supplies consisted of: a notebook, notebook paper, ink pens, number two pencils and plenty of them, a ruler, a compass, a protractor, Elmer’s glue, colored folders, paperclips, a dictionary, and if you were real lucky,

PAGE

110

you or your parents owned a typewriter and a set of World Book Encyclopedias. The school day at Plant City High School started at 12:00 noon and ran to 5p.m. for the 10th graders. If you were in the 11th or 12th grade, your day of five classes began at 7:00a.m. and finished at 12:00 noon. Back then, we were on “double session” because we were the only high school in the area. There was no Durant, Bloomingdale, Newsome, or Strawberry Crest. The closest high school to us was Brandon High School. If you were in the 10th grade and wanted to eat lunch at school, you had to come one hour early. Those in the 11th or 12th grade who wanted lunch at school had to stay after their last bell for one hour. Needless to say, most of us headed home to eat. If we were lucky enough to have money in our pocket, a car, our parent’s car, or catch a ride with a friend, we would dine at McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Dipper Dan/The Plaza Snack Shop, Gino’s, What-A-Burger, or even munch down on a Super Chief and fries at Burger Chief. Now that was some good eatin’!! Once you had your school supplies all in line, then it was time to get your personal look ready for school. Guys and girls alike went to beauty shops to have their hair cut and styled. No more barber shops for guys. The John Travolta / Starsky and Hutch /Dance Fever feathered back Vidal Sassoon look was in. Guys fluffed and puffed their hair just as much as the girls did. Back in those days there were two places cooler than cool to have your hair done: The Man Trap at University Square Mall in Tampa and Shear Fantasy in Plant City. I was one of the

lucky ones who went to Shear Fantasy, the salon owned and operated by brothers David and Steve Johnson and a gal named Bitsy. David had a cool sort of Afro and Steve had the sleek feathered back long hair. (In those days, all the girls thought he Johnson brothers were “foxy dudes.”) Their shop was very earthy and had panoramic wall paper that looked like you were out in the middle of a forest during Fall. The furniture was all natural wicker and rattan. The chairs were the high back Morticia Addams style chairs and you sat and waited your turn while groovin’ to the tunes of Quad 102 ½ radio station in Quadraphonic Stereo. [WQSR-FM 102.5 SARASOTA was a legendary 100,000-watt stereo station that came to epitomize the progressive rock format during most of the 1970s.] When you walked out of Shear Fantasy, you had been shampooed, cut, blowdried, and styled to look like: Dorothy Hamill, David Cassidy, Shaun Cassidy, Andy Gibb, The Bay City Rollers, and the Bee Gees all rolled into one. A Shear Fantasy hairstyle meant two things: That your hair was feathered from one end to the other and that you were just too cool for school. HAHA! School clothes-shopping for high school was serious business! Most kids shopped at Tatum and Johnson’s, The Colony Shop at the Plant City Mall, or at Hooker’s Department Store here in town. If you were doing some serious shopping, you went to Maas Brothers in Lakeland, to Scoggins in Brandon, to Jordon Marsh in Orlando, or to University Square Mall in Tampa, which we referred to as “The Mall.” A few of the cool clothing stores at “The Mall” back then were: The 5-7-9 shop, MerryGo-Round, The County Seat (for jeans and cords), Casual Corner, and The Wild Pair for shoes and handbags. No school outfit was complete without the right fragrance. Guys wore: Jovan Musk Oil for Men, English Leather, British Sterling, or High Karate Cologne. Girls wore: Charlie, Love’s Baby Soft, Babe, Jovan Musk Oil for Women, Jean Nate’, Jontue, and my personal favorite: Ciara. HAHA! Let’s not forget the all-important “must haves” for a girl in high school’s purse. A teen girl would carry: hairspray, hairbrush, comb, Tic Tacs, bubble gum, Certs, aspirin, perfume, band-aids, pencils, pens, Kleenex, makeup, about

four tubes of fruit-flavored Bonnie Bell Lip Smacker, and a dime to call home. Guys? They carried a comb. We teens learned the latest dance moves by watching American Band Stand and Soul Train on Saturday mornings. We listened to popular songs like: Hot Child in the City, Grease, Jackie Blue, It’s Magic, Brick House, Lady Marmalade, Boogie Oogie Oogie, Get Down Tonight, Please Don’t Go, Another Brick in the Wall, and Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue. Groups we listened to on our record players, car radios, 8-tracks or cassette tapes included: Aerosmith, Lynyrd Skynrd, The Jackson Five, Rush, Pink Floyd, Cars, Captain and Tennille, Air Supply, K.C. and the Sunshine Band, Journey, Kansas, and Peter Frampton. The cars in the school parking lot were: Cutlass Supremes, Monte Carlos, Grand Prixs, Trans Ams, Ford and Chevy Trucks, VW Beetle Bugs, Vegas, Gremlins, jacked up Novas or Chevelles, and the family car your parents let you drive to school that day. Now, let’s segue ahead some 35-plus years to today. High school students these days have so many new and innovative items at their fingertips. Today’s technology is almost unbelievable to many people and especially people my age and older. Teens can simply hold a device in their hand and with a quick tap on the screen, receive driving directions from point A to point B, find word definitions, listen to the newest music, watch a movie or TV program, talk to friends, do their personal banking, download sale coupons, participate in social networking, and even crack a mindbending math problem. All these new technological breakthroughs allow today’s teens the answers they need without batting an eye. Truly, the possibilities are endless. Still, I wonder if the teens of tomorrow will have so many options right at their fingertips while sitting in a chair or at a desk, if they will ever feel the excitement we felt as teens out on the dance floor dressed in our groovy outfits, wearing earth shoes with feathered back hair, and reeking of Jovan Musk Oil while busting a move to K.C. and the Sunshine Band’s “I’m your Boogie Man.”

Words of Wisdom BY WANDA “LEWIS” ANDERSON

H

ere are some great ways to recylce your garbage scraps. The following foods will regrow in water: green onions, lemongrass, leeks, fennel, and spring onions. Simply place the base of the vegetable in a quarter inch of water, submerging the base of the root and the new growth will come out of the top. You can grow romaine lettuce, celery, cabbage and bok choy by simply placing the bottom of plant in a few inches of water. When sprots begin to grow, plant bottom of plant in soil and place in a sunny window If you’re planting tomatoes, you can sprinkle used coffee grounds to fertilize. Another tip is that adding crushed egg shells improves drainage and adds calcium to the soil. Banana peels also add a powerful cocktail of nutrients to the soil.

On another note a great tip for clogged sink use efferdert. Break into several pieces drop into drain follwed by hot water. To clean strains from Pyrex or from coffee cups, soak in Efferdent. Follow with dish washing as usual. To clean your cutting board, sprinkle with salt and run cut lemon over the surface. I like chilled wine. A great way to keep wine chilled without watering it down is to freeze grapes and place in glass of wine to keep it chilled. To soften butter, simply fill a glass with hot tap water, pour the water out and place glass over a stick of butter. The butter will soften up after a few minutes. To clean your garbage disposal, freeze vinegar and lemon slices in ice cube trays. Pop out frozen cubes and run through disposal as needed. Until next time relax, enjoy and be thankful... PAGE

It takes a special kind of musician to create music that is both relatable, authentic and full of heart. Plant City’s local singer and songwriter, Justin Grimes, has found a way to successfully tap into all these aspects. Growing up with a mother who taught piano and father who played music, Justin was always surrounded by it. From his mother, Justin learned to play piano, and then he taught himself to play guitar and harmonica. It took an impromptu gig at a restaurant where Justin worked as a chef to make him realize what he was good at and what he wanted to continue doing for the rest of his life. For the last six years Justin has been playing, performing, and writing music full-time. Often, he finds a way to combine his other love, which is travel, with music. Once he embarked on a twomonth tour from Florida to Montana, playing gigs the whole way as a means to finance his travels. It is on these trips out West, alone in the mountains to camp and hike, that Justin finds inspiration for his songs. Justin released his first album in July of this year – “Justin Grimes” is filled PAGE

with songs that breathe life with a heady combination of country, blues, folk and soul. Although most times you will catch Justin playing solo, he also enjoys collaborating with others and playing with his bandm Justin Grimes and The Strong Pickles. The Strong Pickles—comprised of made Justin, Eric Long, Gavin Baulac, and Matt Geiger—make a strong presence onstage and have opened for a few well-known acts. When not performing on local radio and television stations, traveling on tours, or creating new songs, Justin can be found right behind the mic at some of our local establishments like the 1916 Irish Pub. To listen to Justin Grimes, follow him at Facebook.com/ justingrimesmusic or visit YouTube, iTunes, and Amazon.

atelyn Yarbrough is an extraordinary young lady. She enjoys serving her world through different outlets including her school, and even an international mission organization. She has earned over 300 community service hours during her first two years of high school. A huge part of Katelyn’s community service is through her involvement at Plant City High School. She has been a member of the Girl’s Interact Club as a freshman and sophomore. She served as the club’s secretary during her tenth grade year and was re-elected for her eleventh grade year. This service club allows her to help our community in many ways. One major opportunity was with Relay for Life, where she raised over $1000 and received the title of PCHS Princess. Another example of her service with the Interact Girls is serving at the annual Teacher Welcome Back breakfast. Katelyn also acts as coordinator of the Easter basket project, where she puts together 50 Easter baskets for the Florida Baptist Children’s home. In addition, Katelyn works with the Plant City High School students with special needs through She has the Raider Buddies Club where she serves as Vice President. This program, “encourages interaction both at school and away from school for regular education and special need students.” Katelyn loves helping with cheerleading events that include special needs kids as well. She is a part of the ‘Sparkle Effect’ Special Needs Cheer Program. According to Katelyn, “This is a cheer program where the special needs students practice with the cheer team and cheer

during the second quarter of home Friday night football games.” She is so excited to continue with this program this upcoming year with her buddy Josh Fox. Another way in which Katelyn serves is through an international mission organization in Haiti. Haiti is a very important part of Katelyn’s life. She has made four trips to Bercy, Haiti starting in 2013. Katelyn and her family partner with the Cabaret Haiti Mission to work with the orphanage there. At the orphanage, she completes light construction work, painting walls, and evangelizing. Her favorite part, though, is loving on the 52 children who call the orphanage home. Outside of her volunteer life, Katelyn enjoys attending First Baptist Church of Plant City. She is very involved in the youth ministry. Katelyn also is on the Varsity Cheer team at Plant City High School and is dual enrolled at Hillsborough Community College. In the future, Katelyn will definitely continue serving. Service is a priority in her life as is extremely evident. Even though she has two years of high school left, she already has her goals and aspirations set high. Katelyn hopes to attend the University of Florida and pursue a career in either dermatology or psychology. Keep your eye out for her, Plant City! Katelyn Yarbrough is going places! The “Sparkle Effect” cheer program is one of Katelyn’s favorite opportunities for community service. Katelyn enjoys time cheering with Josh and Amelia Cannon, Josh’s other buddy from the Special Olympics cheer team.

T

he month of August is the eight month of the year. The number 8 signifies Resurrection and Regeneration. It is the number of new beginnings. It is the balancer of our life. In this month, let us begin a new and better chapter in our lives. Let’s not focus on the old and hateful ways but rather focus on infinite love for our fellow man. What are the things in your life that you need to resurrect? What are the things you need to bury? Anything other than love should be kicked to the curb!! Let us work together this and ensuing months to bring about a new and prosperous life for ourselves and others.. - Pastor Timothy Knighten, Sr.
