Why go to an emergency center that’s connected to a hospital? What if you need the rest of the hospital? When it comes to your health, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Which is why during an emergency such as a stroke or heart attack, every second counts. We don’t want to risk our patients’ lives by transferring them to a different hospital for emergency surgery. Here, if you need to be rushed to surgery, it’s down the hall, not down the road. We also have access to cuttingedge equipment and some of the best doctors, nurses and specialists in the region are only a few feet away. If you need a pint of blood, no problem, we’re connected to a blood bank. Not to mention that our rehabilitation, orthopedic, oncology and maternity departments are only a wheelchair ride away. The best place to go during your emergency is a facility designed to handle any emergency. And that’s right here at BayCare’s South Florida Baptist Hospital. On March 11, the City Commission approved the renaming of the portion of North Lemon Street, running from W. Baker to W. Reynolds, to BerryFest Place. Cuteness on Parade Plant City youth compete in annual Baby Parade

BY BARBARA ROUTEN

Kadance Drawdy, 4, daughter of Nathan and Amanda Drawdy, dressed as a baseball player from “A League of Their Own” and rode on a float named It’s a Hit! (the 2019 Strawberry Festival theme). Kadance’s fan base included her cousin, eight-month-old Koltyn Holland, his mom, Bridget Holland, and Kadance’s nana, Connie Holland, former president of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs’ Plant City Junior Woman’s Club (1990s). The parade is hosted by the club as a fundraiser for their Shoe Project, which gives shoes to more than 700 underprivileged children in the community. “I love the tradition of what Plant City does to help us with the

Shoe Project,” said Ilene Chavez, parade chairwoman. “The festival has graciously allowed us to run this event for them, and they and South Florida Baptist Hospital and all our other partners also donate to the shoe project. It’s a lot of partnerships, but that’s what makes this community great!” The king and queen of the 2019 Florida Strawberry Festival Baby Parade, King Tucker Russel Brown and Queen Aislee Elizabeth Creel, were crowned at the end of the parade. Their court, made up of first-place winners in each four-yearold category, includes Lillian Grace Jones, Hailey Raelynn Clark and Kadance Nicole Drawdy. For a complete list of winners, visit https://flstrawberryfestival.com.

ore than 123 adorably cute children, ages one to four, won the hearts of judges, the Strawberry Court and spectators at the annual Baby Parade March 9 at the Florida Strawberry Festival. Many 2019 contestants were children of former participants, such as three-year-old Harper Winters, whose father, Jarrod Cauley, was in the parade when he was young. “We’re doing this to build memories for her, so when she gets older, she can look back,” said her mom, Tracey Winters of Plant City. It took the family—Harper’s grandfather, mostly--about two weeks to make the girl’s baseballthemed float. “It’s been a really big family affair!” said Tracey. Four-year-old Penelope Heredy Vo is a dancer, so “she wanted to dress up in something balletinspired,” said her mom. “This is great! It isn’t like a traditional pageant-- there’s an ‘I Love Lucy’ girl! Penelope’s great-grandmother, grandmother and aunt were in this pageant and told me, ‘We all did it! Penelope has to, too!’”

Five judges determined winners for every age group (one through four) in each of these categories: Most Beautiful Girl, Most Handsome Boy, Best Costume, Most Personality and Most Beautiful Float. “For the personality category, we ask things like: What’s your favorite thing at the festival? Do you like ice cream or strawberry shortcake better? Who made your costume?” said Killian O’Donnell, judge. “We base our decisions on their expressions, responses, openness … and endurance.” The kids are there for almost four hours. Many of the children, such as four-year-old Kiley McPeak, have watched older siblings and cousins participate in the parade and ask to do it. “Her older cousin does a beauty pageant, and Kiley just loves going to watch her and wanted to do this,” said her mother, Kirsten McPeak. “She likes looking at all the costumes and dresses. It’s Kiley’s element, her thing. And this has been a good experience. We’d do it again!”

The 2018 Florida Strawberry Festival Baby Parade queen, Madisyn Myndersma, crowns the 2019 queen, Ainslee Elizabeth Creel, while the 2018 king, Kaiden Shouse, crowns the 2019 king, Tucker Russel Brown.

This handsome guy delights the judges with his enthusiastic personality.

Citizen of the Year BY CHERYL JOHNSTON

I

n the 60th year Plant City has recognized the community’s Citizen of the Year, George Banning was honored as its recipient on February 13, 2019 at the Florida Strawberry Festival Expo Hall. The well-attended annual luncheon, hosted by the Kiwanis Club and presented by “The Civic Clubs of Plant City,” had its beginnings in 1960 when Arthur Rice Boring received the first award. The recipient’s name is a closelyguarded secret prior to the actual presentation at the luncheon, with nominees being considered for service impacting the benefit of all and betterment of the community. Selection criteria includes longterm selfless contributions of time, energy and resources apart from the individual’s career responsibilities. Special tribute was also offered

this year in memory of Ken Gibbs, whose too-soon death on December 27, 2018 stunned the community. Credited with “his absolutely essential guide work with this annual award,” Gibbs’ legacy motivates all to continue in their community outreach efforts. Kiwanis Club President Gil Gott emceed and shared the program with other civic club officials to welcome guests such as the Florida Strawberry Festival staff, directors and Queen Kendall Gaudens—with her court members, as well as Katelyn Yarbrough, Outstanding Youth of the Year. Yarbrough, a Plant City High School senior and Strawberry Youth Parade Grand Marshal, was recognized for her leadership and extensive record of “service and love for others.” With words from Acts

20:35, she encouraged attendees to continue “Plant City’s anthem” of making the world a better place. She added, “…and from past outstanding citizens, my grandfather being one of them, I know how blessed I am to be named Outstanding Youth and be standing here to announce the newest Citizen of the Year.” Don Walden, 2018 Outstanding Citizen, then introduced George Banning as the 2019 honoree after sharing highlights of his serviceoriented life. These include: • Rotary Club member since 1976 with terms as local club President and Governor of West Central Florida District 6890 • Helped organize Plant City’s Daybreak Rotary Club in 1994 • Rotary awards: Service Above Self (International); Meritorious Service (Rotary Foundation); and Club Building • The Bannings host Rotary’s annual “Cracker Country Feast” fundraiser at their home,

benefiting United Food Bank of Plant City and other area charities • Plant City YMCA former board member and “Strong Leader Award” (2014) • Board member South Florida Baptist Hospital Foundation and United Food Bank of Plant City • Boy Scouts of America supporter (himself an Eagle Scout and Order of the Arrow honoree) • Helped establish Plant City’s Veterans’ Memorial Park and train viewing tower • Plant City Garden Club member with wife Cassandra • Has raised $200,000 for satellite phone distributions (outside the US and in Caribbean Islands). • As an adoption recruiter, he serves foster care children in the U.S. and Canada • President of Wen-Lake Corporation and owner of eight Wendy’s restaurants in Central Florida; • Assists local children with job searches • Michigan State University degree in Agronomy • United States Air Force: retired as Captain after 20 years active and reserve service Once onstage, a surprised Banning expressed appreciation “to Ken Gibbs especially, along with the Optimists, Lions, both Rotary Clubs, Greater Federation of Women’s Club, Aspire, the Plant City Chamber and the Florida Strawberry Festival.” He also thanked Cassandra and three Wendy’s organization colleagues: Donna Philips (a 40-year employee), Greg Flinn, and Ken Daley, the CEO since 1983. “I’ve experienced a lot of things around the world,” he shared, adding, “but the one I like most is working here in Plant City and helping people.” After retirement, the Bannings look forward to more travel and time with friends and family.

George was happy to be surrounded by his Wendy’s comrades and his beautiful wife Cassandra the day he was named Citizen of the Year by the civic clubs of Plant City. Shown L-R are Ken Daley, Donna Phillips, Cassandra and George Banning, and Greg Flinn. PAGE

Night to Shine brings out smiles BY TARYN STORTER

S

ponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation and hosted by First Baptist Church of Plant City, the 2nd Annual Plant City Night to Shine was held Feb. 8. This year, the dance was held in 655 venues around the world, in 24 different countries on the same night. Night to Shine began five years ago as a Prom Night for individuals with special needs. The evening began with a red-carpet entrance for all the guests when they arrived. They were greeted by paparazzi and cheerleaders and then proceeded inside to receive their boutonniere or corsage. After the guests were met by their buddies, they continued to the dance floor. The guests and their buddies danced the night away. With music pumping, bright lights dazzling, and a beautifully decorated room, the night was inspiring to all. Karaoke was also a huge hit with guests of all ages sang their hearts out to a variety of favorite hits. During the night, each couple had the opportunity to have their picture taken. The photograph was a nice party favor for each guest

to take home to remember the evening. At the end of the night, the music slowed to a stop and a video of Tim Tebow played on the many television screens throughout the common area. He declared that every guest was the “king and queen of the prom.” He continued to say that every single person there was important, loved, and a gift from God. Each guest was crowned by their buddy during a very special ceremony. Katelyn Yarbrough, a member of the board expressed, “It is truly magical. It is such a blessing to all the volunteers to have the opportunity to serve the most loving and deserving people. God has blessed us with their joyful spirits, so we, in turn, get the opportunity to bless them. Seeing the smile on one guest’s face makes all of the hours and months of planning worth it.” The board puts so much time and effort into making sure the event is a night to remember and can’t wait until Feb. 7 2020, for the next Night to Shine. 2nd Annual Praise in the Park on Common Ground Worship experience set for April 13 BY CHERYL JOHNSTON

P

lant City’s 2nd annual Christian outdoor worship experience in the historic downtown is set for April 13 and should prove to be another Chamber nominee for “Best Community Event.” “Praise in the Park on Common Ground” begins at 3:00 p.m, after that morning’s “RailFest” wraps up at the Robert W. Willaford Railroad Museum. Families can enjoy live music from more than 25 local groups, school ensembles, and other performers in all Christian genres. The fun extends until 9:00 p.m. Entertainment includes the world-champion roving magician from Lakeland—Louis Campanella; Gary Robinson, a life-size and stage puppet show with seating; balloon artist Jerry Crabb; the Stiltwalker; and kids will love face-painting by two artists and exercising in the Boggs Family’s KidZone bounce houses. For the last five years, the Trunzo family has enjoyed showcasing local talent, and especially Christian performers, on Friday and Saturday nights at their charming coffeehouse, Krazy Kup, near McCall Park. The idea for “Praise in the Park” was birthed in Frank Trunzo’s mind several years ago with a purpose to inspire faith, enhance community unity and share a love for God-honoring music. “We would also be grateful for the opportunity to recognize and promote local businesses with any vouchers, trinkets or gift cards they provide,” explained Frank. “Together, we can all embrace what our community represents.”

PAGE

24

Performances on the museum’s lawn will run from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. and then continue from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Trunzos’ other nearby building, which will eventually house their Pizza and Performance business. Donations of cash and new baby items (diapers, outfits, supplies) to benefit the Pregnancy Care Center of Plant City are also encouraged, while giveaways and an auction by a world-champion auctioneer will enhance the excitement. Additionally, thanks to Pastor Joe Kelley, students and educators from the eastern Hillsborough

County Area 5 schools will be on hand to entertain and inform. Vendors, schools, churches, and civic groups will distribute resources and market their wares in one of the 26 spaces on Drane Street available for lease that day at $50 each. To reserve space, e-mail Joe Kelley at thecgm18@ gmail.com. The organizer of the “Common Ground Movement” and its “Nights of Joy” youth events, Kelley also oversees the “Campus Encouragers” program, which serves as liaison between schools and the faith-based organizations desiring to support student success. Specialties for purchase from six highly-regarded food trucks will satisfy the hungry and benefit this great cause. Advance promotion by radio stations WTBN, Joy FM, and Radio Luz should increase the crowds. Trunzo shared, “We have lofty goals to expand eventually into a

large arena, attracting Dove Award winning performers and folks from all over Central Florida for an outdoor worship experience.” He continued, “As a musician, writer and someone who feels a spiritual connection to the arts in general, I prayed, ‘God, I just want to do your work and do a great job of helping people enjoy a day of praise and worship that gives glory to You.’ We hope He catches the hearts of those who need to be caught. We want everyone to experience the goodness of God and His people, to see our peaceful lifestyle and feel the comfort of being in a pleasant place where positive attitudes are the norm.” Come to enjoy, shop, dine, sing-along, and be a presence! The Trunzos and Pastor Kelley encourage, “Our arms are open to all participation, because God’s love is for everyone and it’s definitely worth the share.”

Rise Up:

Young professionals welcome all for monthly morning series

BY CIERRA CRAFT

John Dicks, former Plant City Mayor and City Commissioner, spoke to the young professionals group about the projects he oversaw during his time in city leadership. Dicks was the first speaker of the Rise Up monthly morning collaboration.

T

he Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce and RISE Plant City have merged, creating a new program of events for Plant City’s young professionals, ages 21 to 42. The first of many new programs include Rise Up, a new monthly morning lecture series. Rise Up is designed to allow young professionals to sit in on a Q & A session with an experienced community leaders. The first Rise Up collaboration event was held at Norma’s Plant City Cuban Sandwich Shop on Feb. 20 and featured former Plant City Mayor and City Commissioner John Dicks as the guest speaker. Approximately 30 people were in attendance for the first event. Dicks spoke to the group about projects he took part in during his time in city leadership, including the building of the current City Hall and the development of a veterans’ memorial at Courier Field. He then encouraged the young professionals to consider a role in

city government, to be a catalyst for growth and change in the future. “Let people know you’re excited about this community, where you live, and that you want to be a leader and that you want their help…,” said Dicks. Dicks also spoke to the changes he has seen in the city throughout his lifetime as a resident, referencing the integration of schools. He commended the community for its changes socially and economically that made Plant City stronger. Dicks said it was an honor to be the first speaker of the Rise Up series. “It was a great privilege… it’s nice to welcome a young crowd to downtown,” said Dicks. “I’m very excited; I think these are very bright, young, talented individuals...From what I have seen, they’re enthusiastic, they’re energetic and they want a better hometown community. Plant City is already great, but they want to do

nothing but enhance our long term community feel." Community Relations Manager for the Greater Plant City Chamber

of Commerce, Sophia Hyde said the organization is excited to kick off this first partnership series and to take Rise Plant City under its wing. Hyde said, “It benefits the chamber to have this organization underneath our umbrella because we have a vested interest in helping to foster the next generation of leaders. Through Rise, young professionals can gain experience working on a committee, leading an organization and putting on events. Over time, these members will grow into the leadership makeup of the Chamber and become our future business owners, members, board members and committee chairs.” The next Rise Up morning collaboration event will be held March 20 from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. at Norma’s Plant City Cuban Sandwich Shop with guest speaker, Sandee Sytsma. Sytsma serves as the 2019 Chairman of the Board of the Florida Strawberry Festival. For more information, please call the Chamber at (813) 754-3707.

Following the Q&A session, Dicks met with attendees, including Sophia Hyde, JP Coton and Trent Lott. Dicks said he was asked by Lott to speak to the group.

I decided to go into anthropology after taking that class and signed up for another class… I realized medical anthropology was a thing, so why not do it? It’s an interesting field; anthropology ranges from diseases to looking at cultures, not just race but groupings of people based on interest like being a part of Church, a member of the FFA or living in the same area.

Are you a Plant City native? No. I moved to Plant City when I was in the 2nd grade from Jacksonville. I was born in St. Augustine. My mom wanted property for a barn for our horses and to stop renting barn space. Right now, we have two horses, two dogs, one cat and two pet rats.

What is your favorite part of Plant City? I love the Food Truck Rally every month. It’s in old downtown Plant City and it’s just a great atmosphere, it’s very inviting… we have both locals and out-oftowners to share food and creative ideas. My favorite food truck is Mr. C’s Grilled Cheese.

Where did your love for animals come from? My mom had the horses, so it just came to me. I wanted a Great Dane, like Scooby Doo and growing up we had two cats named “Precious” and “Commotion.” We had a Cockatiel when I was five years old named “JoJo.”

What is your favorite local establishment? Probably, Hole-in-1 Donuts. I don’t know what they do to make their donuts so delicious… I like the basic glazed donut. They’re just so good!

Why did you choose to major in Anthropology? Originally, I was a Biomedical Sciences major and I had a sudden epiphany, ‘I don’t want to do this anymore.’ I took a course called Cultural PAGE

Did You Know? A look back and to the future BY PLANT CITY PHOTO ARCHIVES

Plant City Photo Archives, Inc. in the beginning in 2000

T

his year Plant City Photo Archives enters its 20th year of community service. It has grown from a pile of seven boxes of prints and film in a hallway to an award-winning history institution with over 120,000 images digitized, and many credits as to its accomplishments. Here’s a look back at what has happened over the years and what may develop in the years to come: Beginning with an exhibit for City Hall in 2000, by 2019 the Photo Archives (Archives) has provided photos for over fifty organizations or businesses including State Senator Tom Lee; County Commissioner Al Higginbotham; Bing Rooming House Museum; State Farmers Market; Holiday Inn Express; Tampa Hillsborough County Library System; Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office; CenterState Bank; The Tampa Tribune; Plant City Courier; Plant City Observer; WUSF; CNN; U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; and many more. Along the way the Archives

has received awards from the City of Plant City Historic Resources Board; Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce; Improvement League; Greater Brandon Arts Council; Plant City Black Heritage; and grants from Florida Department of State; Heritage Preservation; Florida Humanities Council; Hillsborough County; City of Plant City; Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History; National Endowment for the Humanities; and Unity in the Community. The Archives has also received grants from the Rotary Club of Plant City; Daybreak Rotary; Civitan Club; Lions Club; Kiwanis Club of Plant City; Arts Council of Plant City, and more. In 2002 the Archives formed an Advisory Council and benefitted from dozens of leading citizens in the community who served on it. The organization has held sixteen annual galas, during which they presented sixteen Heritage Awards to outstanding leaders in the preservation of the

community’s history and heritage; and fifteen Parolini Awards for Exemplary volunteer service; along with three Benevolence Awards, and one Founder’s Award. Active with state and national professional organizations, a representative has served on several committees. Through the American Association for State and Local History, Archives Executive Director Gil Gott received a call from The History Press and was asked to write a book; in March 2007 he published Remembering Plant City: Tales from the Winter Strawberry Capital of the World. The Archives has produced over 100 monographs and has published in the Society of Florida Archivists’ monthly Newsletter; FOCUS Magazine (monthly since 2003), Plant City Courier; Plant City Observer; and others. In 2017, along with co-author Lauren Der McNair, published The Florida Strawberry Festival: A Brief History. In 2007 the Archives partnered with WUSF TV, which produced the awardwinning documentary “Plant City Goes to War.” Again, in 2018, the Archives partnered with both WUSF Public Media and USF Zimmerman School of Advertising and Mass Communications to produce “Florida Matters: Telling Tampa Bay Stories – Plant City,” which was recorded in the Archives facility. The Archives’ new home in 2009 in historic downtown Plant City has been a great venue. The Archives has hosted Leadership Plant City; WTVT TV; bus tours; school tours; a contingent of Russian visitors via Daybreak Rotary; architect students from HCC; meetings of Rotary, Civitan, Kiwanis, Arts Council, Friends of the Bruton Memorial Library, Plant City Bar Association, Tampa Realtors, Downtown Merchants, and Main Street, among others. Requests for information and photos come in from citizens across town and across the country. The Archives has assisted in hundreds of searches and provided information and photos to people from California to Maine and has reunited lost photos to searching families. To inspire future archivists and historians, the Archives initiated the Jr. Archivists Club, where students from 9 to 14 learn to become History Detectives, and to preserve and

appreciate history. It is the only one of its kind in the nation and has appeared in newsprint and professional publications. Four “History Detective” courses have already been completed. Additionally, the Archives has worked with eight student interns and assisted in publishing their work. In October 2018, with the help of the State Farmers Market and several local organizations, along with Publix Super Markets, the Archives produced and presented an acclaimed outstanding exhibition: “Plant City and the Agriculture, Food Processing, and Supermarket Revolution, 1939-1975”, which drew crowds until it closed in November. After all this, the reader wonders how it started. Ed Verner, a local businessman and history buff who had served two terms as President of the East Hillsborough Historical Society, acquired the bulk of the photo collection of the late professional photographer Bill Friend in 2000. Verner established the Plant City Photo Archives, Inc., a 501 (c) (3) not-forprofit educational and cultural Florida corporation, with a mission to preserve the community’s history and heritage and to provide access to the public. The Archives is now looking to employ more digital technology, expand its use of social media, redouble its communications both internally to members and externally to the public. The future also holds a new blog containing current activities and local history, and a new electronic publication, The Plant City Quarterly, which will contain local history by local historians and will be issued quarterly, or whenever the editors decide. There will also be an expansion of the Archivists Club programs for Juniors and Seniors. The 17th annual soiree, or gala, will be held Thursday, March 28, 2019, beginning with a champagne reception at 6:30 p.m. at the Archives facility at 106 South Evers Street. The admission is $50 per person, the attire is dressy casual or business. Seating is limited. For more information, call the Archives office at 813.754.1578 or you may email info@plantcityphotoarchives.org.

ART WITH HEART CONNECTING COMMUNITY AND CHARITY

BY CIERRA CRAFT

Making a positive impact on the Greater Plant City community is at the core of our work here at FOCUS Magazine. A few years ago, our publisher Mike Floyd began brainstorming how to repurpose newspaper stands that our office no longer uses. The boxes sat in storage for years untouched. Jules Burt

Unity in the Community

Loretta Burns

The Boys and Girls Club West Plant City

Then in January 2019, our office put the Art with Heart project into motion. We chose four local charities- Unity in the Community, The Boys and Girls Club-West Plant City, United Food Bank and Operation Paying It Forward- and connected those charities with local artists, whom were tasked with painting the newspaper stands with symbols representing the charities. The Plant City community is asked to support these artists and charities by purchasing $1.00 copies of FOCUS Magazine in the respective boxes. The charities will receive 100% of the money for various projects, initiatives and events. You can help make a difference in our community with your dollar donation.

Jules Burt

Jules Burt is a pop artist, renowned for her fun, brightly colored one-of-a-kind pieces. Burt is a self-taught artist who has painted professionally for over 20 years. Burt’s artwork has been seen by millions on the hit sitcom “Friends.” The brightly painted wall art in Ross’ apartment and the coffee mug in Rachel’s hand at Central Perk are the creations of Burt. For seven seasons, her artwork was featured on the beloved sitcom. Her work has also been on display in Tampa and Atlanta, along with Plant City. However, Burt is best known for her trademark “Glamour Girls”- her paintings of larger-than-life outlandish divas and beauty queens. Celebrities Elton John, Madonna and Uma Thurman are owners of Burt’s art, but she has always kept her work affordable and accessible to the public at large. Her work has been featured on the Today Show, Dateline, and Access Hollywood just to name a few. Furthermore, Burt is the founder of the High Heel Hike™ a 1K event raising money for various organizations including Moffitt Cancer Center and The National Music Foundation. The inaugural High Heel Hike™ began in Tampa in 2004. For all of her charitable giving, Burt was given the Key to the City of Tampa by former Mayor Pam Iorio in recognition for all her charitable and community accomplishments.

Loretta Burns

Loretta Burns is a self-taught artist specializing in interpretive portraits and pet art. Burns’ unique, bright pop art delights fans as she captures the fun, energetic spirit of their dogs, cats and other pets. Her work has been shown and sold all along the East Coast in states such as North Carolina and New Jersey. Burns has experience as a muralist, with work featured in restaurants in North Carolina. Burns says she is inspired by her client’s ideas and bringing them to life through her paintings. She is a skilled multimedia artist, with experience working with watercolors, and recently won 3rd place at the Florida Strawberry Festival for her first sculpture. Plant City residents may also recognize Burns, as she hosts a Paint and Sip at O’Brien’s Irish Pub on the second Monday of every month. Her work is also in rotation through the guild’s Art Around Town program, so you may see some of her work on display at Walden Lake Car Wash or Aromatic Harmony. Loretta was named a FOCUS Magazine Artist of the Month in 2018 and she is looking forward to an exciting 2019, as inspiration hits her to create.

John Briggs John Briggs has always drawn inspiration for his art from the world around him. Growing up in his parent’s grocery store, Briggs would draw on butcher paper to pass the time away. Briggs is renowned for his mural work, including a mural that was once located at Collins and MLK, tributed to Plant City’s railroad history. Briggs painted the mural in 1974, and after a fire in 2005 that burned seven businesses to the ground, Briggs’ mural was the only part of the building that remained standing. Shortly after, the wall was removed to begin the restoration process. A replica of the mural is located inside of the TECO Expo Hall at the Florida Strawberry Festival. Furthermore, a large painting by the artist is on display at Fred’s Market Restaurant, depicting a farmers market. Briggs has described his work in four stages: figurative paintings, landscapes, narratives and now he is in the fourth, a seascape/ figurative/narrative works. The fourth period of his work has led to the creation of his Painting in the End of Days and Casting of the Unknown collections, which have been on display at Florida Southern College, Museum of Art in Deland, Florida and the HCC Ybor Campus in Tampa.

Dave Letterfly Knoderer Dave Letterfly Knoderer is an eccentric artist, with a love for the unusual. With a career spanning four decades, Letterfly began his career as a teenage apprentice in the sign and design trade. As a talented painter, he began offering murals and large wall graphics at amusement parks, restaurants, and window treatments. He then transitioned into the RV industry, becoming one of the country’s most prolific airbrush artists. His work on motorhomes led to opportunities to paint in retail spaces, homes, and other vehicles, including motorcycle pinstriping, portraits and imagery, and custom one-of-a-kind pieces. The artist offers masterful, custom hand painted artwork with true expression. Letterfly offers classes and hosts projects at his studio called ArtPark, as well as travels the country to paint on location, when needed. Letterfly can be found at ArtPark during the winter months and spend the summer months traveling the U.S. and Canada to meet with former and new clients. Plant City residents may have seen Letterfly around town, driving one of his many colorful Volkswagen buses. Fans can meet him March 2224, at Bikefest at Harley-Davidson in Ft. Myers, Florida.

Operation Paying It Forward Operation Paying It Forward is a nonprofit dedicated to providing random acts of kindness which in turn bless the lives of others. Operation Paying It Forward has three goals: To foster change in the community, to make a difference in people's lives, and to show appreciation for to those around us. In 2018, Operation Paying It Forward members served as ambassadors for service when the organization showed appreciation to the Plant City Fire Department, presenting the fire fighters with plaques, t-shirts, gift cards and other goodies. The organization most notably took in Braeden, a 9 year old boy battling stage three cancer. Operation Paying It Forward was able to provide Braeden with some items from his wish list, as well as allow him to explore a fire truck and the fire station. In December 2018, the group helped Braeden’s family with meal cards as they traveled to St. Jude’s for treatments. Then the organization took

a little girl named Levi under their wing. Levi is battling Leukemia and the charity donated a bedroom set and a dining room table to the girl’s family. Additionally, the organization donated over 600 pounds of turkeys to the United Food Bank of Plant City to bless families in need of a holiday meal and donated toys to Achieve Plant City for the holiday season. In January 2019, Operation Paying It Forward founder Michelle Valdes shaved her head to stand in solidarity of those fighting cancer, including Levi and Braeden. Looking forward, the organization is encouraging everyone to plant a tree for Earth Day and hosting a self-defense class in May. The legacy that is now known as Parkesdale Farm Market, began when the Parke family relocated from Pennsylvania to Plant City in 1956. The family began with a 10 acre farm, eventually expanding to hundreds of acres of not only winter strawberries, but also citrus and vegetables. The market opened in February 1969, selling produce straight from the farm. Every winter, people from across the globe flock to Parkesdale Farm Market for its World Famous Strawberry Shortcake and strawberry milkshakes. For over 30 years, Parkesdale Farm Market has been serving World Famous Strawberry Shortcake and Strawberry Milkshakes. While the business may be young, it’s already making an impact on the Plant City dining scene in a big way. Customers can’t get enough of the restaurant’s authentic Old Tampa cuisine.“We are true to representing the authentic flavors of Old Tampa,” said Williams. The restaurant’s hand rolled Devil crabs have a crunchy exterior and stuffed with delicious crab. The Cuban sandwiches are made with fresh bread from La Segunda Central Bakery and piled high with ham, Genoa salami and slow roasted pork. The warm, generous hospitality and the detailed attention to customer satisfaction brings folks back again and again. The staff at Ole’ Tampa Cubans invites the community to come in, sit for a spell and try Plant City’s Taste of Tampa.

THE JOHNSON FAMILY LEGACY: RCA WINNER FRED'S MARKET RESTAURANT SERVES UP GOOD OL’ COUNTRY COOKIN’ WITH CHARM, HOSPITALITY AND FAMILY VALUES AT ITS CORE

For more than two decades, Fred's Market Restaurant has served up traditional homecookin’ with southern hospitality and charm. From crispy fried chicken to grits and tomato gravy, guests enjoy a meal just like Grandma used to make. The Johnson family legacy began in 1954, when Elton and Evelyn Johnson began serving Evelyn's southern cooking out of their gas station, which stood on James L. Redman, at the location of the present day Hardee’s. The gas station was converted to Johnson Restaurant when folks couldn't get enough of Elton’s barbeque and Evelyn’s cornbread and fried chicken.

Meet Fred Johnson, his mother Evelyn, affectionately known as “Grandma,” and his sons, Michael and Owen, as the family sits down to reflect on the humble beginnings of their restaurants success and the path forged by Elton Johnson in 1954.

By Cierra Craft Photos by Cierra Craft & Courtesy of the Johnson family

Today, the Johnson family operates four Fred's Market Restaurants throughout Central Florida and the iconic Johnson Barbeque at the corner of MLK and Alexander streets. The establishments are built on family values and heritage, making the Johnson’s restaurants a place where family, friends and the community can sit for a while and share slow cooked meals. It’s no surprise that Fred’s Market Restaurant has won more Readers’ Choice Awards than any other eatery in Plant City, with 28 Readers’ Choice Awards just within the past nine years.

PAGE

Most readers know that your family legacy began in 1954 at family owned gas station, but what food was sold? Where was the gas station located? Evelyn: Do you know where Southern Hospitality is? Where Hardee’s is? Right there. We had a 5 acre plot and lived right there. In ‘54, Freddy [Fred] was born and we sold sandwiches. Fred: They were pre-made sandwiches sold for a dime, then they sold more and more. Eventually Dad put in a grill for hamburgers, then a fryer, then built on the restaurant for a dining room and a drive-in restaurant, selling milkshakes, french fries, hamburgers and onion rings. It just kept growing to 350 seats. That’s twice as big as this restaurant [Fred’s Market Restaurant] and that was all over 6 years. Evelyn: The boys never wanted to be in the restaurant business. Fred: Dad built gas stations for a while and went back to the restaurant business in ‘62. Starting again with a 350-seat restaurant at the site of what’s now a probation office down the street on MLK. Then, it was sold in 1977. Buddy was at U.F. studying law and I had a degree in citrus, we were bored with what we were doing so we went into the restaurant business with Buddy Freddy’s in 1980. We had that for 17 years and sold it in ‘97 and I opened Fred’s in ‘98.

Owen, you revised the rubs and sauces for Johnson Barbeque, which opened in 2003. After the success of Fred’s Market Restaurant, was opening the barbeque daunting? Were you afraid of changing the rubs and sauces developed by your grandfather? Owen: No, I wasn’t afraid, I was excited. I worked on those rubs and sauces for about two years trying to find something new and build something about barbeque. It’s still exciting, because I am still looking for new ways to smoke something, or pair flavors together or something.

What was Elton Johnson like? Who was he as a person? Fred: He was the hardest working person, he never stopped creating something. Owen: We still use some of the catering trailers he build in the mid ‘60s, like our concession stand at the Festival. Fred: He was born in Alabama during the Depression, so he didn’t have the opportunity to go to school, but he had a lot of sense and his mind was faster than computers. He was always the patriarch and always took care of his family, and they worked in the business with him. If there was a problem, they went to him, he was the leader. But, he couldn’t have been anything without my mama.

Owen and Michael, what are your favorite childhood memories growing up with the restaurant? Michael: We worked with all of our best friends. We worked with our family and friends, Owen met his wife here; Caleb, our brother, met his wife who worked here. Owen: In high school, we would come in after school. The restaurant was closed from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and we would get the restaurant ready for dinner. We would work at the Festival when we were kids at eight and nine years old.

Fred, you opened the first market restaurant in 1998. What was the vision? Fred: We had two Buddy Freddy’s, and then opened the one market restaurant for breakfast and lunch. Then, we bought the fish market next store and that became the barbeque [Johnson Barbeque]. Owen and Michael worked Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at the market. Then in 2004 we opened Fred’s in Lakeland, 2008 in Bartow, 2009 in Winter Haven, December 2012 in Riverview, and September 2015 in Lake Mary. We were just stretched too thin, so we closed Bartow and Winter Haven because they were too close to each other and buckled down with these locations and the barbeque. What sets Fred’s apart from other southern restaurants? Evelyn: It’s just regular ol’ country cookin’ Fred: We cook like we’re going to eat. It’s not about the money, it’s about hospitality. One thing I love about our restaurant is all generations come here and have a good time. Owen: There’s a family legacy behind it. She [Evelyn] is still here to see it. Michael: I think it’s our people. We treat them like family and they treat our guests like family. PAGE

96

Are family recipes used at Fred’s Market Restaurant? Fred: Yes, they’re still family recipes, including the cornbread, the fried chicken and the country fried steak. Everything is by the recipe, there is no frozen or bagged food. What’s your favorite item on the buffet? Owen: Meatloaf, but we only serve that on Tuesday, so I always eat here on Tuesdays. Michael: The Mac and Cheese or the Peach Cobbler. Fred: Collard greens Evelyn: I always get the fried chicken.

How do you feel having won the most Readers’ Choice Awards? Owen: We’re thankful people come in everyday and we want to continue to do a good job for them. It’s never been something for us to flaunt, we just want to serve excellent food; it’s never been about recognition. We love the Best Server award, because it’s personal to the server and it just says to us that people enjoy our service everyday. What’s the future of the Johnson family legacy look like? Owen: Keep the five restaurants we’ve got and get busier and better and create more demand for what we’re doing here. We want to continue to be the landmark place to go.

FOCUSBUSINESS

Courtney Paat Insurance Agency, Inc. BY CIERRA CRAFT

Paat attributes the longevity of her agency to team building and development. Team members are encouraged to set goals and achieve those benchmarks.

In 2018, Paat was presented with The Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce’s Chairman’s Award. The award is presented to one member who stands out amongst the crowd for their dedicated service to the community, as well as their active membership in the Chamber. Paat has served on the Chamber’s executive board for three years.

O

ver 55 years of longevity, 74 years of insurance experience and strength of the industry leader combined with a local agency and familiar faces. Yes, you can have it all. For almost 20 years, Courtney Paat and her dedicated and knowledgeable team have focused on helping Plant City residents “manage the risk of everyday life, recover from the unexpected and realize their dreams” just as the State Farm mission states. “Our focus is on a long-term relationship; we want to help you uncover what your needs are and offer tailor made solutions,” advises Paat. “Insurance is not one size fits all. We are Risk Advisors whose priority is to make sure your family is protected when you suffer a significant loss.” Paat, a Lithia resident, is a FSU alumni and holds a degree in Risk Management and Insurance.

PAGE

100

She was recruited by State Farm out of college and spent eight years learning the business as an Underwriter working in their Corporate office. In 1999, she and her husband Angel, moved to Plant City to open her own agency. July 1 the agency will celebrate its 20 year anniversary. “The focus of our anniversary celebration is you- our customers and the community,” said Paat. “You are what has allowed us to establish ourselves in this community and support its residents.” The Courtney Paat Agency has earned numerous awards over the years, including the Mid-size Business of the Year and Golden Triangle awards. The one Paat is most proud of is the Chairman’s Circle trophy. “It represents the top 5% of State Farm Agents nationwide,” said Paat. “It means we do the right

things for the right reasons, and a lot of it.” Earlier this year, Paat was nominated for the Employer of the Year and Customer Service Awards in the Chamber of Commerce Best of Plant City Awards. In addition to running a business, Paat is a wife and busy mom of 2 daughters, Kalei (16 years) and Melia (12 years). She volunteers with her daughter’s high school band and is a Girl Scout troop leader. “One of my greatest joys is supporting women in their growth and development,” said Paat. “ Being a Girl Scout troop leader allows me the opportunity to work with these young, impressionable ladies and show them anything is possible.” In 2018, Paat along with a core group of Plant City women leaders created and founded Aspire Plant City – a women’s group whose mission is “Women empowering each other personally and professionally.” In the past year, the group has hosted over 40 events with the focus on creating space where women can connect, build relationships and support each other. In an effort to support local small business and nonprofits, many events were held in these locations. “It was one small way we could give back and support the local community,” said Paat.

On April 23, the group will host its 1 year anniversary celebration at Wishing Well Barn. “This past year has been amazing; watching these women work so diligently on something they believe in is inspiring,” said Paat. “ This group is making a difference in people’s lives.” In 2020, Paat will take on a new responsibility as Chairman of the Board for the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce. As one of a handful of women to have held the role, she hopes to inspire others to reach for their potential, to expect a seat at the table and to never forget the gifts they have to offer. No Appraisal Needed For A Mortgage? BY NATE DAVIS, FLORIDA MORTAGE FIRM

T

here are options that allow consumers to forgo the appraisal process on some mortgage loans. This is wonderful news for home buyers, as well as people who want to refinance, since an appraisal costs from $400 to $550. Other benefits of getting an appraisal waived is it shortens the loan process, as well as removes any chance of an appraisal coming back short of value or with property issues. While this might seem risky at first glance, these loans are insured by either Fannie Mae, or Freddie Mac. They have compiled massive

PAGE

104

amounts of data about the real estate market. As a result, their proprietary analytics can identify within a fair degree of certainty whether a value of a home is accurate. For Fannie Mae loans, the scenarios would be limited to a 20% down payment from buyers for primary and secondary homes, 10% minimum equity for limited cash-out refinances on primary and secondary homes, and 30% equity on cashout refinance loans for primary residences. Getting an appraisal waived is just one of many features and

benefits for consumers who work with an independent mortgage company that does not have selfimposed lending restrictions.

While many banks and retail lenders do not offer this, this consumer-friendly option does exist.

Florida Mortgage Firm (813-707-6200) is an Equal Housing Lender, NMLS #289323, NMLS #294701.

RISING STAR PCHS SOFTBALL CAPTAIN & PITCHER ashley

Blessin By Taryn Storter Ashley Blessin, a senior at Plant City High School, is a three-time Hillsborough County Pitcher of the Year. As the Plant City Softball Captain and starting pitcher, Ashley has recently broken the school record for earned run average (ERA), wins, and strikeouts. Currently her ERA is 0.79 and total strikeouts is 792. Growing up, Ashley was a cheerleader and played basketball and soccer. But when Ashley started playing softball, she knew that she had found her passion. Ashley said that softball is her favorite sport because, “it makes me happy and is something I can share with my family. On the field I feel like I am in my own little world and my family loves to come watch.” Ashley has been playing softball since she was seven and pitching since she was nine years old. Outside of softball, Ashley has earned high or principal’s honor roll all her years in high school. She is also a member of National Honor Society and Interact Service Club. When asked where she finds her inspiration, Ashley answered, “I find my inspiration from my dad. He is always there to push me to be the best I can. I would not be where I was or who I am without my dad.” Ashley believes that in high school, one should get involved to make the most of their four-year experience. She said, “Participating in a high school sport was the most fun I had in high school and you get to meet a bunch of new people.” As the captain of the softball team at Plant City, Ashley has led the team to a current team record of 7-0. This is no easy feat, and under her leadership, the team is working towards an incredible final ranking for the season. After graduation, Ashley plans to attend Marshall University on an athletic scholarship and major in Sports Marketing and Management. Keep your eye on Ashley Blessin! She is making history, one pitch at a time. PAGE

Sports Team of the Month PCHS Baseball BY TARYN STORTER | PHOTOS BY REGAN MESSICK

T

he Plant City High School Baseball Team has made history. They are the 2018 George M. Steinbrenner Classic Champions! On October 14, 2018, the team claimed the victory, winning the final game, an incredible accomplishment. They defeated Leto in the final game 9-1, pitched by senior, Grant Gifford. As an award, each team member was honored with a championship ring at the New York Yankees spring training game on Friday, March 1. Each ring was personalized with the player’s name and position engraved on the side and presented to him on the field by a Yankees player. Currently, the Raider baseball team has a 4-1 record (2-0 in preseason) and is looking forward to a successful season. Head Coach Mike Fryrear has been coaching baseball for fourteen years, seven at Plant City High School. Coach Fryrear explained that many of the players have played baseball together since they were eight or nine years old. They know how to work together and win

PAGE

together. He also said, “We have very strong personalities on this team which makes it fun to coach in different ways to motivate, influence, and build back up with different individuals.” Coach Fryrear, when asked who the Most Valuable Player would be, said, “Tough to say, but I will put Cade Shissler right now. He is hitting over .500 with 2 Homeruns. Parker Messick is a close second due to his work on the mound beating rival Durant, Wharton, and Trinity Christian (ranked at the time 19th in the state). However, the edge would go to Cade.” Both Cade and Parker are the team Captains and according to their coach, “very humble student-athletes that listen to coaching. They have improved every year and are just GREAT kids on and off the field.” When the Steinbrenner Tournament took place, Coach Fryrear was on vacation. He commented that “with all the training and coaching they received in the fall, I wasn't worried. The last two games, I was back in town, and my

coaches were begging me to come back. However, I couldn't ruin the mojo of their success of the players. So, I stayed home and watched every inning and every pitch during the semifinal and final game. When they won it, I couldn't have been happier and more excited for the players and the coaches.” This team has accomplished so much this year. Coach Fryrear said, “For this team to win, even though it was the fall, it is a huge achievement for the program and community. It was an internal feeling of success

even though I wasn't there, but it felt like letting your child (or team) out in the real world for the first time knowing you can count on them.” The Steinbrenner Classic is an amazing honor to win. All of Plant City is very proud of them and all that they have done. Keep looking for more news about the Plant City High School Baseball Team. You can visit their website, www.plantcitybaseball.com to see more about the team and all their accomplishments.

Seeing Manatees in the Wild!

BY BARBARA ROUTEN

The Manatee Viewing Center is wheelchair accessible. A picnic area near the main entrance has photo boards to help you remember your visit! A manatee calf nuzzles its mom as another half-dozen sea cows swim near them in the warm waters at Tampa Electric's Manatee Viewing Center.

I

At the nearby Circles Waterfront Restaurant, decadent desserts like this warm fudge brownie á la mode are homemade daily.

Visitors on the Manatee Viewing Center's observation desk watch more than 100 manatees on a chilly January morning. PAGE

116

f you drive down to Tampa Electric’s Manatee Viewing Center in Apollo Beach, you might see more than 100 wild manatees and their calves, many gorgeous wading birds and a variety of fish in the canal—maybe even a dolphin or shark jumping out of the water. Adult West Indian manatees, also known as sea cows, average about 10-feet long and 1,200 pounds. These slow-moving creatures are drawn to the warm waters in the discharge canal of Tampa Electric Company’s Big Bend Power Station, particularly when Tampa Bay waters are chilly—68 degrees or cooler. They have congregated here since the plant’s Unit 4 began operation in 1986, and the area has been designated a manatee sanctuary by state and federal governments. Some days, you’ll mingle with hundreds of other curious spectators at the complex that includes an environmentaleducational component, a rays touch tank, tidal-walk and habitatloop trails, a butterfly garden and a 50-foot tall wildlife-viewing tower. A couple of hours may be enough for the experience. Creature comforts include a gift shop, restrooms, snack shops,

picnic tables, parking lot and overflow parking with a free shuttle bus to the center. Admission and parking are free. The Manatee Viewing Center, 6990 Dickman Road, Apollo Beach, is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Nov. 1 through April 15 (except Thanksgiving, after 3 p.m. Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Easter). For more information, visit www. tampaelectric.com/company/mvc/ or call (813) 228-4289. If you want to make a day of it, after your visit to the viewing center, relax over a meal at one of Apollo Beach’s nearby eateries. Pizza, Pasta, Prime and Apollo’s Bistro offer casual dining, whereas Circles Waterfront Restaurant is a little fancier, with great seafood, scrumptious, homemade desserts and indoor and outdoor seating overlooking a lovely marina. If you’re still in Apollo Beach in the late afternoon, drive a mile west northwest to the Apollo Beach Nature Preserve, 6760 Surfside Blvd., to catch the sunset’s gorgeous golds and magentas over Tampa Bay before heading back home. It’s the perfect ending to a day filled with wildlife and wonder!

P

resident John F. Kennedy was in the White House. The population of the United States was 185,771,000 people, The national debt was 302.9 billion, unemployment was at 6.7 % (up 1.2% from 1961), life expectancy was 70 years, and the middle-class American family income was $6,000, which was up $300 from 1961. Johnny Carson took over as the host of NBC’s Tonight Show, Wal-Mart opened its first store in Rogers, Arkansas, and Andy Williams sang: Moon River and took home a Grammy. The Academy Award went to West Side Story, and The United States Navy commissioned the first SEAL. A gallon of gas was 25 cents, a firstclass stamp was 4 cents, a movie ticket was 50 cents, a candy bar was 5 cents, a new car was $2,500, a newspaper was 10 cents, and a doctor’s office visit was $5. Favorite TV shows were: The Andy Griffith Show, The Jack Parr Show, McHale’s Navy, Bachelor Father, Tell it to Groucho, and The Beverly Hillbillies. Some famous births in 1962 were: Clint Black, Garth Brooks, Jon Bon Jovi, Tom Cruise, Jerry Rice, Evander Holyfield, Demi Moore, Jodi Foster, and the author of this article…Me! I decided it might be fun to call a few of my friends around town and ask them: “Where and what were you back in 1962?”

www.HopewellFuneral.com Sharon Moody, Plant City’s 2016 Citizen of the year, President of The Black Heritage Celebration, Past President of Plant City Kiwanis Club, Board Member of Unity in the Community, and voted as one of Plant City’s Women of Distinction, was a six-year-old in Sadye Gibbs Martin’s first grade class at Lincoln Elementary School. She remembers walking to town with her grandmother to buy fish at Harrell’s Fish Market on Palmer Street. Marion Smith, President of the Plant City Chamber of Commerce, was a fiveyear-old kindergartener at St. Peter’s Episcopal, who got in trouble for bringing a knife to school just because she wanted to. Plant City Police Chief Ed Duncan was a seven-year-old attending Cahoun Elementary in Sulphur Springs and remembers students having practice drills at school to “Duck and Cover,” which involved crouching under desks and covering their heads in defense of a a surprise nuclear attack. Chief Duncan also remembers the school asking students to bring empty bleach bottles to store water in case of war, so they would have water to drink, bathe, and brush their teeth. Mr. James “Sonny” Jones, retired Principal of Tomlin Jr. High School and Plant City High School, had just accepted the position of Assistant Principal of Plant City High School where he stayed for five years until he was offered the job of Principal of Tomlin Jr. High School. Mike Sparkman, Founder/President/ CEO of Sparky’s Oil Company, City Commissioner, Former Mayor of Plant City, Citizen of the Year, Director and Past President of the Florida Strawberry Festival, was in his Senior year at Plant City High School, and worked four jobs: He and his brother David owned and operated a full service gas station on Palmer Street; he drove a kerosene truck; was on duty seven nights a week from midnight to 7:00 a.m. for the Plant City Fire Department; and drove an ambulance for Haynes Funeral Home. WOW!! Paul Davis, General Manager of the Florida Strawberry Festival, was a sevenyear-old in second grade at Seminole Heights Elementary School in Tampa, who was anxiously awaiting his family’s move to Plant City so he could be a third grader at Cork Elementary. (Note to self: Paul Davis first tried to say that he wasn’t even born yet in 1962 - hahaha!!). Pec Chambers McGinnes, lifetime

FAMILY OWNED AND OPERATED SINCE 1971

resident of Plant City, former Strawberry Queen’s Court Member, wife of Festival Director Dub McGinnes, and grandmother of 2016 Strawberry Queen’s Court Member Ashlyn Yarborough, was an eighth-grade student at Tomlin Jr. High School. She was an office assistant for Mr. John Edison, Dean of Boys, and remembers standing outside of his office listening to the sounds of his beloved paddle as it warmed the “Tail-End” of some young men who liked to misbehave. Mary Yvette Thomas Mathis, former Mayor of Plant City and Assistant Principal of Marshall Middle School, was a four-year-old living with her family on Haines Street, just waiting to become a kindergartener at Glover School. Marsha Passmore, former Plant City Commissioner and past Plant City Citizen of the Year, said she was eleven years-old and loved to play “school” and “dress up” with her little sister Dodie. Mark Poppell, Vice-President of Poppell Insurance, was a one-year-old with a full head of bright red hair, scooting around his house wearing a real cloth diaper, which he said “was held in place by a pair of shiny sharp diaper pens.” OUCH! Worse than sweet little baby Mark Poppell getting stuck with a diaper pen was having the United States and the Soviet Union standing closer to Armageddon than at any other moment in history. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, leaders of the U.S. and the Soviet Union engaged in a tense, 13-day political and military standoff in October 1962 over the installation of nuclear-armed Soviet missiles on Cuba, just 90 miles from U.S. shores. In a TV address on October 22, 1962, President John Kennedy notified Americans about the presence of the missiles, explained his decision to enact a naval blockade around Cuba, and made it clear the U.S. was prepared to use military force if necessary to neutralize this perceived threat to national security. Following this news, many people feared the world was on the brink of nuclear war. In October of 1962, my father was a 30-year-old History teacher at Plant City High School. My mother was 28 (she’s now 85), worked for General Telephone here in Plant City, and was 8 months pregnant with me. My sister Karen was a

sweet little 2-year-old that from the time she got out of her bed every morning insisted on wearing a metal sand bucket on her head like a hat and walked around with her collection of pacifiers that she called: “Her Ma” (She had 10…one for each finger). TALK ABOUT SPOILED!! HAHA! A few days before the Missile Crisis was announced, Mother took my sister over to Titusville to visit my grandfather Clyde Bates, then the Chief Deputy Sheriff for Brevard County, and who had a lost his wife (my grandmother) a few months earlier to an illness. On October 22, 1962, the day President Kennedy made his public address, my grandfather left his office at the courthouse and hurried back to his house to explain what was going on to my mother. He gathered all his “important papers” and gave them to Mother in case something happened to him, packed up my mother and sister, gave them a kiss goodbye, and led them (well us) in a police escort to the Brevard County line. He wanted to get us back to Plant City so we could be with my father since there was threat of nuclear war. My mother remembers traveling US 1 on the drive back to Plant City, that the major North/South highway to Miami was full of military vehicles transporting tanks, missiles, troops and equipment; that sandbags were being put up everywhere; and people were expecting to see a giant orange glow at any time. However, disaster was avoided when the U.S. agreed to Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev’s offer to remove the Cuban missiles in exchange for the U.S. promising not to invade Cuba. Kennedy also secretly agreed to remove U.S. missiles from Turkey. WHEW! What a year! Aren’t you glad we made it? If we hadn’t, Mike Sparkman would never have given us “Sparky’s” (no Sparky’s gas stations, no Sparky’s convenience stores, no Sparky’s Fried Chicken or Sparky’s Potato Logs). Sharon Moody would never have been the 2016 Citizen of the Year, Marsha Passmore and her little sister Dodie would never have grown up to still play “dress-up” every day, and I would not have written this article for your enjoyment! Yes, 1962 was a great year!
