This month, enjoy stories that capture the essence of our community. Plant City celebrated our nation’s independence on July 4th with family, friends and fireworks at the Plant City Fourth of July Celebration. Plant City High School’s student Wyatt Davis competed at the national SkillsUSA competition, shining a light on the technical trade program. Finally, Plant City Entertainment presents “Curtains,” a whodunit murder mystery musical, taking the audience on a captivated investigation.

Heather Davis still has not figured out what she wants to be when she grows up, but meanwhile is having a lot of fun trying out as many things as possible. A mother of three boys, Wyatt, a recent graduate of Plant City High School; Leon, who just started his school career as a kindergartner at Knights Elementary; and Mason, a newborn. Currently, Heather is an accountant for one of the best coffee shops in Tampa, Buddy Brew and is an avid coffee lover. She also teaches yoga and has been a writer for FOCUS Magazine for 18 years. She loves the little town of Plant City, but enjoys traveling to see the rest of the world as much as possible. Fun Fact: Heather started one of Plant City’s first coffee shops, known as Coffee 101 in the same exact building where FOCUS Magazine was once located (today, the location is Krazy Kup). She is also currently extremely interested in learning how to play the accordion so that she will have a hobby when she is older.

If it wasn’t for the support of the business community and our sponsors, this event would not be possible.” Which brings up the question – what started this event? Following the tragedy of September 11, 2001, the City of Plant City made a decision to create its first July Fourth Celebration. With a nation still grieving from 9/11, they knew the community needed a renewed sense of hope. “We felt as a city, we needed to do something patriotic,” stated Holland. With only months to prepare, the inaugural July Fourth Celebration of 2002 successfully brought a community together. As the patriotic songs and the military salute rang out, many witnessed tears running down spectators’ cheeks. It was obvious, America was still hurting.
When asked about his greatest moment as director, Holland quickly went back to this night in 2002, humbly stating, “Seeing those rockets go up for the first time, the first year, because it was such an undertaking of a brand-new event.” To Holland, this night became the milestone of his 41-year career. Which leads to one final question – what set the course for this nation’s independence? America was formed from the decisions of 56 men as they signed their names to an important document. It was a decision of courage and strength. Yet, it was a decision of freedom or death. On July 4, 1776, Thomas Jefferson stood before the assembly and read the most monumental decision ever placed upon paper, this country’s Declaration of Independence. With a simple decision, lives are affected. With a monumental decision, lives are transformed.

n July 4, 2019, many from the community decided to observe America’s independence at the annual Plant City July Fourth Celebration at Plant City Stadium. For some, it was their first year at the event. For others, attendance had become a family tradition. Whichever year it marked, all were present to enjoy a night bursting with excitement and fireworks. People flooded the field in their red, white, and blue attire. Hats, shirts, and even a man’s beard could not escape the broad stripes and bright stars. An afternoon rain followed by grey skies cooled the forecasted heat. Families were able to spend hours participating in many activities, including rock climbing, bungee jumping, and kids’ crafts. Adults even joined in on the festivities, forming long lines at the airbrushing tent.

But what made families decide to celebrate their independence at Plant City Stadium? When asked, Ylallo Saldierna mentioned the activities, show, and location. The Miller family, from Valrico, stated, “Always known this area to be nice and country.” Longtime resident Daryll Patisaul declared, “A good family outing. It’s free. Good people around. Can’t beat it.” Celebrating its fourteenth year, the City of Plant City, in partnership with its Chamber of Commerce, held this annual event for the community. “It takes a village to make it happen,” noted Jack Holland, Director of Plant City’s Recreation & Parks Department. Sophia Hyde, Community Relations Manager of the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce further stated, “The Fourth of July event is made possible by our business community. They really

SkillsUSA is Alive in Plant City One Student’s Journey to the Nationals

program at PCHS. “Only the best of the best makes it to Nationals. Wyatt do you realize the magnitude of what just happened to you? Not only did you win gold at Regionals, then gold at State, but now you are going to Nationals!” Guillem, or Mr. “G” to his students, started the electrical program with a dream for his students to not only learn a trade but also apply it in their lives. In a matter of three short years, Guillem has taken this program all the way to the SkillsUSA Nationals. “That was unbelievable,” stated Guillem. “I had tears in my eyes. One of my students got first place. We dethroned the state champ.” As a teacher, he knew the work that was going to be involved. He encouraged Davis to practice more since he was about to face every top student in the United States, as well as Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Competition was held June 22-28 in Louisville, Kentucky. There were 6,500 student competitors, 19,000 in attendance
and over 100 competitions ranging from criminal justice, 3D animation and practical nursing. The competitors had many opportunities to view and interact with suppliers, employers, and trade professionals. The overall experience was designed to prepare the students for entry into the job market. Many of the competitors left with equipment and supplies related to their trade that was donated by the sponsors of the event, such as Milwaukee, Nikon, Snap-on, Klein, Miller, and many others. Back in 2018, not realizing what to expect, Davis placed 9th in the regional competition. “That was a wake-up call,” said Davis. “If I actually want to do this again next year, I have got to practice and know what I’m doing.” What a difference a year makes. What a difference regular weekly practice towards honing his skills in the electrical trade makes. Overall, Davis placed 18th out of over 10,000 competitors. But, most importantly, he has gained through this journey the skills and training to be a consummate professional in his field.

ot everyone is familiar with the SkillsUSA program. However, it has been a large part of many high schools in the Tampa Bay area and across the nation for several years. SkillsUSA began in 1965 as the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America. For the past 54 years, it has grown to where they now serve more than 360,000 students and instructors annually. SkillsUSA host competitions in 11 different categories: arts and communications; construction; health sciences; hospitality and tourism; human services; information technology; leadership; manufacturing; public safety; science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM); and

transportation. Wyatt Davis, a senior at Plant City High School, took his electrical training all the way to the top of the SkillsUSA competitions. Starting at the local level, Davis took first place in the 2019 SkillsUSA Region Four Competition held at Pinellas Technical College’s Clearwater Campus in February. Davis then advanced to the state level, earning a spot in the 2019 SkillsUSA Florida State Leadership and Skills Conference at the Pensacola Bay Center in April. Now competing against the best in Florida, Davis again took first place in his division. “Oh, my goodness!” shouted Fernando Guillem, SkillsUSA Advisor and teacher of the Electricity
PCHS Senior Wyatt Davis won the regional and state competition for electrical work in the SkillsUSA competition. He then went on to compete at the national level, where he placed 18th out of 10,000 competitors from across the US, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. His adviser, Fernando Guillem, has taken PCHS’s program to the national level in three years.

lant City Entertainment's 2019 season continues July 12 with the opening of the John Kander-Fred Ebb-Rupert Holmes musical comedy, "Curtains." The show runs through July 28. “Curtains” is a parody of a 1950s ‘whodunit’ murder mystery. Detective Frank Cioffi (portrayed by Joey Canessa) investigates a series of murders that take place behind the scenes of a fictional 1950s cowboy musical, Robbin’ Hood. The cast of Robbin’ Hood is forced to stay inside the theater while Boston police detective Cioffi unravels the mystery, getting involved with the

show and falling in love with ingenue Niki Harris (portrayed by Brittany Canessa) in the process. “Curtains” received a Community Arts Impact Grant, with the support of the Arts Council of Hillsborough County and the Hillsborough County Board of Commissioners. PCE Board Member Shelly Drummond says the grant was used for production purposes and the theater as a whole is blessed for the support. Drummond said: “We are so excited to receive a grant to support the production of ‘Curtains.’ It has been an incredible experience for the theater and we couldn’t be prouder
of our Director and his amazing cast and production team.” Director Doug Buffaloe began conceptualizing the show as early as February 2019 and says it was important to him to put his own spin on the show originally created by the famous duo Kander & Ebb, who are responsible for the creation of “Chicago” and “Cabaret.” Buffaloe shared a bit about what audiences can expect: “We’re also presenting the show in a very nontraditional way. I don’t want to reveal too many of our secrets, but the audience is in for quite an immersive experience. I didn’t want to just copy and paste the way the show has traditionally been presented in the past, so we put our own little stamp on it. I think audiences will be pleasantly surprised by some of the things they see.” Auditions for “Curtains” began in February 2019 and the cast has been tasked with learning not only their lines, theatrical cues, and blocking, but Buffaloe says the cast
has been hard at work learning challenging choreography for the show’s large musical numbers. “My poor cast has been put through the ringer learning all of this challenging choreography,” said Buffaloe. “There’s just so much of it.” Packed with elaborate musical numbers, luming mystery and a charming script, “Curtains” is an immersive journey for both the performers and the audience. Curtains combines musical comedy, murder mystery, and parody. With some strong language, sexual innuendo, and violence depicted, the show is rated PG-13. Kelsey Holm Bridges
B
orn in San Antonio, Texas, Kelsey Holm Bridges moved to Plant City when she was sixteen years old. Little did she know that this charming little community would become her forever home, where she would raise her three kids: Hannah, Hayley and Bentley. Kelsey is an employee of the Florida Strawberry Festival and a member of First Baptist Church of Plant City. Through her work and church membership, she is dedicated to being of service to others. With a heart of gold and a warm smile, Kelsey can walk into a room full of strangers and make friends right away. What was your childhood like? I was born in San Antonio, Texas and we moved around a lot, but I become cultured by meeting people from different walks of life. I had friends of different nationalities everywhere we lived. We moved here when I was sixteen and I told myself ‘I am not moving again.’ Why did you choose to settle in Plant City? Roots are important and a sense of community is important. My kids can’t go anywhere without seeing someone we know who tells me ‘I saw them’ and the kids tell me ‘they saw me.’ The feeling of community became really apparent to me when I started working at the Florida Strawberry Festival. My successes are their successes and you can’t find that in a big city; I lived in one, people just get lost in the shuffle. We don’t have blood family here, so our friends become family.

What is your favorite part of working at the Florida Strawberry Festival? It’s so much fun! I get to promote fun for my job and promote a family friendly environment. We’re a part of a community of friends and you become a tight knit unit and we work like family to make the Festival great each year. It’s very selfless work, as everyone there works with the vendors and community in mind. What is one character you are working hard to instill in your children? Service is important. I always encourage them to get involved because you will never regret serving other people. It’s important to give yourself to others. What is your favorite thing to do as a family? Sundays and going to church. I read online that church is a place where you’re not a test score or competing to be the best athlete. The week can be stressful and after church, we are just refreshed. Every night since my son was saved, we have prayed together before bed and he gets a little sad when we have missed church. We also really enjoy going to the train depot downtown and we like to take pictures there as a family. Now there are speakers with music and it’s so fun, I love it.

Quintilla Geer Bruton: The Library Lady and Iron Magnolia of Plant City BY PLANT CITY PHOTO ARCHIVES

I
n a Tampa Tribune article in November 1985, Quintilla Geer Bruton was referred to as an “Iron Magnolia,” one of the Southern women who work behind the scenes and get things done. Quintilla Geer Bruton was a true Iron Magnolia, and more. And to many she was the “Library Lady.” Born Emma Quintilla Geer December 16, 1907, in Walton, Kentucky, she came to Plant City with her parents and older sister Odessa in 1923, immersing herself in this small town’s activities. Quintilla excelled in her studies, graduating Plant City High School as valedictorian of the class of 1926. Quintilla was everywhere at Plant City High School. Nicknamed “Bubbles” for her effervescent personality, she was in the Orchestra, Forum Club, Science Club, Class Reporter, Tennis Club, Kanyuksaw [Yearbook] Editor-inChief, and Honor Student. She was an excellent violinist. After her graduation, her family moved to Tampa and there she studied business and bookkeeping at the Tampa Business College. After working as a bookkeeper in Tampa, Quintilla moved back to Plant City

in 1931, accepting a position with Wayne Thomas, Sr., working there until 1941. We are not sure if this is the same Wayne Thomas who owned and published the Plant City Courier from 1910 until 1944, but if so, she may have worked in the same building now occupied by the Photo Archives on South Evers Street. (But probably not.) After 1941, Quintilla Bruton devoted even more of her time on civic activities concerning conservation, government, and libraries. Quintilla Geer and J. D. (James DeWitt) Bruton married in 1932 at the First Methodist Church in Tampa, then settling in Plant City, first on Wheeler Street then moving into 910 Roux Street, where they remained until about 1980. Together they purchased approximately 50 acres of land adjacent to the Thonotosassa Road west of Plant City and there they created Audubon Acres and bird sanctuary. They cut trails through the brush and would take school children on hikes, pointing out the various wild life, and plants, and the many species of birds visible in the sanctuary. Quintilla was fascinated with ornithology
and conservation; she even set up a trail named for Athos Menaboni, an internationally known artist who produced intricate detailed paintings of over 150 species of birds. When the State Road Department began surveying for a new road from Lakeland to Tampa, which would run right through Audubon Acres, the Brutons objected. Judge Bruton stopped the surveyors, but the State Road Department was determined and the road, later known as I-4, was built, cutting through the sanctuary. Quintilla Bruton wept when she saw her beloved wild life, which once traversed the trails in this area, were killed by the new motor traffic. Nonetheless, the smaller sanctuary was rebuilt and continued during their lifetime. In addition to her membership in the Audubon Society and Nature Conservancy, and many other organizations, Quintilla Bruton was a founder and charter member of the Plant City Garden Club. She was a president and very active member of the Woman’s Club of Plant City. It was in this capacity that she set her sights on establishing libraries. She believed “you never outgrow your need for libraries.” The Woman’s Club had established a small club library in Plant City in 1929, taking possession of a vacant house. In 1956, Quintilla, then serving as president of the club, spearheaded the drive for a new municipal library, winning city-wide support from residents and civic organizations. On December 4, 1960, the newly constructed Plant City Public Library was dedicated. Over the years actively pursuing the opening of new libraries, Quintilla served as chairman of the local library board, chairman of the Hillsborough County Library Board, and chairman of the Florida State Library Board. She breathed life into Friends of the Library associations throughout Florida. Her friendship with Plant City native John Germany, who referred to Quintilla as his mentor, encouraged him to promote the Friends of the Library and lead in the development of the Tampa-
Hillsborough Library system. She helped organize the Friends of the Library of Hillsborough County and served on the board until 1973. In 1961 Plant City civic clubs honored Quintilla Geer Bruton with the Outstanding Citizen of the Year Award. In 1963 the Plant City Public Library was selected by the Book-of-the-Month Club for the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Award as Florida’s most outstanding small public library. It included a check for $1,000 for books for the still growing library. That year the Florida Library Association named her Florida’s Outstanding Trustee. Involved also in government affairs, Quintilla Bruton served on numerous Hillsborough Democratic Party committees and campaigns, served on the Government Consolidation Study committee and, in 1972, received a citation for Outstanding Service in Preservation of Local Government from the East Hillsborough Chamber of Commerce. With David E. Bailey, Jr., Quintilla Bruton co-authored Plant City; Its Origin and History, published in 1977 and revised in 1984. Quintilla Geer Bruton, the Iron Magnolia, died in January 1989. Bruton received many other awards and honors; however, she is quoted as saying that “what gives me the greatest pleasure is to walk out this library door and have the little children say, ‘There goes the LIBRARY LADY!’”

andi Sasser McGlathery is a veteran real estate agent, selling homes throughout Hillsborough County, from Plant City to Tampa to Riverview and Lutz. Beginning her career in Punta Gorda, Florida in 2004, Sasser McGlathery started her career in property management when Hurricane Charley hit the harbor community. I was raised in the Turkey Creek/Durant area near Durant High School on approximately 4 acres. The land where Durant High School is was a big orange grove. My family had horses, cows,
chickens, and pigs during my childhood days. Fun summer days involved catching tadpoles with the neighbors in the pond that only held water in the summer and homemade slip ‘n slides. My favorite childhood memories are of the Strawberry Festival working at my church’s strawberry shortcake booth. It did not take long for my friends and I to learn that strawberry shortcakes were as good as midway and concert tickets. It is obviously not the same now but those were the days! What led you to Punta Gorda? My ex husband, (I am now remarried) accepted a sales job with a territory between Sarasota and Naples. Punta Gorda was the obvious choice because of its location, and because it is a charming harbor front community with a small town feel (kind of like Plant City). Speaking of Hurricane Charley, what impact do hurricanes have on real estate sales and property values? Hurricane Charley happened during the boom years of 2004-2007 and it seemed the national attention to the area brought more buyers. The rental market soared as many displaced families needed homes during reconstruction on their homes, housing for workers, and we still had the usual winter residents wanting to book their winter rentals. Many of those

I am a member of the Greater Tampa Association of Realtors and the National Association of Realtors. Exploring your website, Sandi Sells Tampa, buyers are able to see available listings and read your blog about top topics. How has social media and the rise of technology impacted the jobs of realtors? I love Plant City but was looking for a name that did not limit my reach to just Plant City. The rise of the internet has changed the way we do business. We now have online showing requests for homes, Electronic, bluetooth lock boxes, video tours of homes, Zillow which allows buyers to search and see homes with pictures and video tours, Facebook where buyers can share listings, contracts are digital and allow for electronic signatures. Consumers turn to the internet now instead of going to the yellow pages so learning how to stand out online seems to be the new challenge. Videos, Blogs, and Facebook all help in this area. You serve all areas of Tampa Bay, from Plant City to Riverview to Tampa and Lakeland. How do these markets differ? They really do not differ as much as you might think. Home prices are going to be different based on the comparable sales in the immediate 1-2 mile radius. Riverview is a booming area consisting of many new/newer construction communities. Many of these new communities offer resort style amenities
which appears to have replaced the golf course communities. Wesley Chapel introduced the first fresh water lagoon community to the area and now 2 others are being built. One in Ruskin/Wimauma area and another closer to the original Wesley Chapel one. And how do these differences impact your real estate sales? The new construction communities offer buyers many options such as financing, closing cost incentives, not to mention warranties, all these enticements can pull buyers to the new construction homes. Most new construction communities work with Realtors and Realtors can be valuable resources to the buyers as a communication liaison, experienced negotiator, and advisor during home inspections/construction walkthroughs. What are your top 5 tips for someone looking to purchase a home for the first time? My top tip for someone looking to purchase a home for the first time is to speak with a Realtor experienced with first time home buyers. I recommend a consultation to discuss the process. When I meet with first time home buyers I am able to discern what their needs or concerns are and recommend financing programs that include down payment assistance, and mortgage brokers that can help make this a smooth process. We can also discuss how sellers can contribute towards a buyers closing costs. The next step is to get them prequalified. If someone is not quite ready to proceed I recommend they start preparing financially by paying down debt, saving for a down payment, and keeping a close watch on their credit scores.
My top tip for someone looking to purchase a home for the first time is to speak with a Realtor experienced with first time home buyers. I recommend a consultation to discuss the process.

Preparing Your Home for A Property Appraisal BY NATE DAVIS, FLORIDA MORTAGE FIRM
W
hether you’re selling your home to someone who needs financing, or if you’re thinking about refinancing your current mortgage, one thing many lenders will require is a property appraisal. While the actual inspection make take only an hour or two, the appraiser must go back to the office, do the research and write a hefty report. Here are some tips to help the appraiser with additional information — and in most instances, a faster turnaround time to complete the report. 1. Compile a list of recent improvements. If possible, include “before and after” pictures and

copies of paid receipts for work completed. If major updates were made, provide a detailed copy of the bid from the contractor. 2. Make sure all areas are accessible, including the attic, basement and crawl spaces. This includes the garage. 3. If the home is part of a homeowner’s association, include a copy of the fees paid, as well as the name and phone number of the association president or executive director. 4. Straighten up each room. Appraisers are required to photograph each room, and while it may not make a difference to them if the room is messy, there may be an underwriter who is less objective.
5. If there are any unfinished projects, make sure they are completed before the inspection. While Florida Mortgage Firm has options for you to get an appraisal
waived, there are some scenarios where that would not be possible. So a little help from you goes a long way to make sure that the appraisal report is complete and accurate.

In three years, Jessi Rae Varnum returned from an internship with a New York-based bridal boutique, graduated from Florida Southern College, launched a business and settled into a brick-and-mortar. Benitez By Taryn Storter Eleven-year-old Parker Benitez is making it big in the motocross circuit. He started riding only a year and a half ago, but he is already competing at the national level in the sport. Coached by JB Ballard, Parker practices six to eight hours per week, working to perfect his craft. He rides at various tracks across the area to get as much time on the track as possible. He has his own personal track as his main base for training and often utilizes the tracks of friends, as well as official training facilities. Parker works very hard to be the absolute best he can be, as he competes with kids his own age, as well as older athletes. Parker said, “I love motocross, because of the drive I get from riding.” He is excited to continue riding as he transitions to middle school in August. He is ready to begin sixth grade at Marshall Middle School. Motocross wasn’t always Parker’s passion. He was inspired by his older brother, Philip Foo, as he competed in minicross. This encouraged Parker to compete as well. He saw the energy, passion, and determination exhibited by motocross athletes and wanted to be a part of that exciting scene. In April 2019, Parker broke his wrist in a motocross accident and had to pause his training for the past three months. However, during the last week of June, Parker bounced back better than ever. He started training again for a big competition held on July 6 in Dade City. When asked how he felt about the race, Parker explained, “I am a little nervous, but more excited. I’m ready to be back to the sport I love.” Following the July 6 race, Parker’s father, Jake, said Parker placed 2nd on his 65cc motorcycle and placed 4th on his 85cc motorcycle. Jake says all Parker has ever wanted to do is race motorcycles and that Parker is aware he has raced as long as his competitors, so he has a point to prove. With about three contests per month, Parker lives to compete. He has worked his way to the national level and looks forward to contending in November at the national motocross competition: Mini O’s. Sports Team of the Month Plant City 12U Baseball Team BY TARYN STORTER
T
he Plant City Raiders 12U Baseball team recently competed in Cooperstown, New York, the second week in June. The team earned a 4-4 record, a great result in this level of play. This team of boys is like a second family, making the experience even more memorable for all involved. Many of the athletes began playing together at age six, which has created a brotherhood among the team. Billy Teeden, the group’s coach, has led these boys for the past six years along with the team manager, Ray Cowen. Together, they provide the support and coaching that allows each one to compete at his absolute best. During the season, many players stepped up into leadership roles. the team together by leading in prayer before games, and Waylon Rogers who offered inspirational pep talks. In addition, Teeden shared that Jake Carbaugh was very instrumental for his pitching in big moments, and James Gray led the team in home runs and runs batted in. When explaining what makes this competition so remarkable Teeden shared, “Cooperstown is a tournament with 104 teams participating. Teams come from all over the country to play in the historic town. Many of the teams collect kids from all over their state and kids from even out of their state to play on their team. But that’s what makes the Raiders so special, all our kids live in Plant City or very close and most of them attend the same schools.”
Impressively, three of the players hit their first homerun in Cooperstown this year: Logan Teeden, Cooper Cowen and Josh Machado. Home runs were also hit by Waylon Rogers, Lane Baxter, Braxton Bohinski, James Gray and Jake Carbaugh making Cooperstown an experience the boys will never forget. Coach Teeden explained in Cooperstown, “we were playing in a tournament and were down 3 to 1 in the top of the sixth inning. Waylon Rogers hit a three-run homerun to take the lead. Later in the game, Jake Carbaugh shut them down in the bottom of the 6th. This was a very special moment for all of us, seeing their hard work paid off.” The Plant City “Raiders” 12U Baseball team has made lasting memories and lifelong friends.

R
ecently I had the privilege of sitting down and speaking with the band members of The Paperback Whale. The Paperback Whale made up of four local Plant City musicians have been consistently creating music as a band for seven years. Longevity and no end of creative and original material are two key aspects of what makes The Paperback Whale so special. When I spoke with the band members, Pat Hearn (guitar and vocals), Preston Williamson (vocals, guitar, and songwriter), Eric Crosby (drums), and Mike Randolph (bassist), I was blown away by the level of maturity, introspection, inclusivity, and passion they all expressed. All of these attributes combined makes for a wealth of excellent songs that both move you and make you think and feel. The band calls 2019 "The Year of the Whale" as they are making inroads into the local music scene and are steadily playing shows in Lakeland, Plant City, and Tampa. This past year they performed at The Strawberry Festival and have also played live shows at Krazy Kup (Plant City), Poor Porker and Hillcrest (Lakeland), and The Blue Note (Tampa). The Whales have upcoming shows scheduled in August and September at Hillcrest and Swan Brewing. An important attribute that contributes to The Whales being able to create music and perform together other than the love they share for the music is that they are friends first and foremost. This effortless and meaningful relationship flows forth into the music they perform. As a band they also have no shortage of original material and share in an environment of endless creativity. Music from The Paperback Whale can be listened to and purchased on Bandcamp, Youtube, Apple and Spotify. At this time they have written, recorded, and produced two albums, "Always on My Shoulder" and "My Captor's Bed", along with a five song EP, "Interior Motives". A second EP is currently in the works. As a long time supporter and admirer of local music, I cannot recommend highly enough The Paperback Whale. For a closer-to-home naturalwater experience (within 20 miles), immerse yourself in the invigorating 72-degree springs at Lithia Springs Conservation Park, 3932 Lithia Springs Road, Lithia. Admission is $2 per vehicle (up to eight people) plus $2 per person in the swimming area. Swim bands are not sold after 5 p.m., although the park is open daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and the swim area from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Prior to visiting, go to hillsboroughcounty. org for information about park closures. I
hope everyone had a Happy 4th of July. We celebrated our 50th “Lewis Family Reunion” where family gathered in our two day event with horse shoe tournaments, talent show, entertainment and more. There’s not too many folks in Plant City that we aren’t related to and we love them all. I’ve been asked several times to talk on the subject of tipping. I researched and here’s what I found: • Restaurants/Dining: The standard across the board is to tip 15 - 20% • Delivery: The standard is 10 – 15% • Take out: Where you go inside to pick up no tip is required • Curbside take out: It’s recommended to tip 10% • Buffet: 10% tip is recommended • Bar: recommended tip $1.00 to $2.00 per drink • Hair dressers: recommended 10 – 20% I also wanted to include a few tips to help around the house: I recently found a great tip to whiten your white linens.Simply pour ½ cup of lemon juice into your wash cycle. You will be shocked at how well this works. Do not use on colors as it will lighten them. For cleaning the grout/tile in the
bathroom try a damp sponge with baking soda then rinse with warm water. Tough stains or set in dirt try using a damp sponge in full strength white vinegar to wipe down entire surface. Immediately scour with baking soda and a brush or sponge. For really tough stains and spots try mixing 1/2 cup baking soda with 2 TBSP of washing powders and 2 TBSP of borax. Add 3 TBSP of Liquid castile soap and stir (if you don’t have liquid castile soap, you can use liquid dish soap). Pre-wipe with full strength white vinegar and scrub with baking soda mixture. For tubs, wipe with white vinegar, sprinkle with mixture and let sit for 15 minutes. Scrub with heavy-duty brush and rinse. Moldy Grout Stains- For mold on grout make a mixture of 1 part Hydrogen Peroxide (3%) and 1 part water in a spray bottle. Spray on grout until saturated. Wait 45 minutes and wipe down with sponge and rinse well. Special shout out to the best tile guys I know, Ronald Tew and Randy Tew. Until next time relax, enjoy and be thankful…

Pastor David Robinson Shiloh Baptist Church BY CHERYL JOHNSTON
P
astor David Robinson and his wife Ashley were named Foster Parents of the Year in 2018 by the One More Child organization in Gainesville and ultimately, for the entire state of Florida. Today, in addition to being Student Pastor for the youth, children and college/career students at Shiloh Baptist Church, the Robinsons are raising their six children, who they adopted from among the 20 they’ve fostered. And just two weeks ago, Pastor David celebrated with great joy the “privilege of baptizing” their oldest son Danny. Born the youngest of four into a Christian home in Bunnell, Florida, the athletically talented David was
“always in church because it seemed the entire family was involved in ministry.” Now he’s mentored by his brother, the Children’s Pastor at Church at the Mall in Lakeland, who is mentored himself by their Uncle Bobby. The family’s heritage even includes a Mayflower voyager, John Robinson, a lay minister on the ship. When did you come to faith in Christ? It was February 19, 1997. At age nine, I remember responding ‘Hell’ when my mother asked me, ‘If you died tonight, where would you go?’ After she explained how salvation comes through belief in Jesus, I asked Him to live in my heart and be my Savior.
Describe your educational journey. I was heavily involved in sports at Flagler Palm Coast High School until graduation in 2007. I earned a baseball scholarship at Nova Southeastern and had a batting average of 400 my sophomore year. Initially, I was recognized for my Christian lifestyle but then began squandering time and playing for David instead of for God. That’s when I realized He was closing the baseball career door. I left NSU in 2009 and married Ashley. We’d become middle school friends when my brother was our youth pastor. Next I attended the University of North Florida, before graduating in 2013 with Business Administration and Biblical Studies degrees from the Baptist College of Florida. I’m working toward my Master’s degree now. Tell us about your work prior to Shiloh. Before Pastor Joe Bowles requested my resume, I had served at First Baptist Palm Coast, two
years in Ashford, Alabama and four years in Newberry, Florida. We’ve felt so loved and appreciated since moving to Plant City in February of 2019. Much bigger than our last church, we’ve been surprised by the close-knit Shiloh family. And Brother Joe is so humble and genuine. We’re very happy to be here. Any hobbies or passions? While my hobbies are sports in general, my passion is seeing kids come to Christ and seeing their obedience in pursuing their giftings through Him. My personal approach in ministry is to love them like crazy; show up at their events, games and recitals and hang out with them at the basketball court, ball field, or home. I hug them all and say ‘I love you.’ So many things can pull them away from God. We’re also trying to connect parents and other adults to Shiloh’s young ones so they learn from each other. I learned while researching Master’s thesis papers that 70% of youth leave church due to a lack of discipleship by parents and their local congregation. Of that number, 50% never return, 40% become attenders only, and only 10% will be world-changing disciples. Those 10% credit their faith-filled parents and another adult outside their family who cared about their lives and prayed for them. So obviously, we grownups can be great encouragers and influencers. Is there one specific dream you hope to realize? I’m simply trusting God to help me impact as many people as possible for Christ. The friendly folks at Shiloh Baptist Church, 905 W. ‘Twas the night before school started, when all through the town, the parents were cheering, it was a riotous sound. By eight o’clock kids were bathed and tucked into bed, when thoughts of homework filled them with dread. New pencils, new folders, new notebooks too, new teachers, new friends, how their anxiety grew. The parents just sighed as they enjoyed all the quiet, when suddenly they heard a whole lot of chatter. So, they yelled upstairs: “GET BACK IN BED…THIS IS A SCHOOL NIGHT!”

oing back to school and giving up all the summertime fun was one thing, but getting ready to go back to school was a whole other ball game in my family. Going back to school meant shopping for clothes, shoes, and school supplies, along with fresh haircuts, dental checkups, and a visit to the pediatrician for back-to-school shots. “Shots, no, not shots!” My mother always insisted that my sister and I go to the doctor and the dentist and have our checkups; there was no way out of it. My sister and I would cry, beg, and plead, but we were going to get our checkups. My sister Karen was born in February 1960. At that time our mother chose Dr. Hugh Johnson in Lakeland as our pediatrician. His office on Troy Avenue in the Southgate area of Lakeland, back in the 1960s and 1970s, looked somewhat like a modern Frank Lloyd Wright design. Upon entering the office, you were immediately greeted by Shirley, the rather heavyset nurse who sat at the front desk and was always dressed in a white nurse uniform. Her starched white dress was complemented by white panty hose, white nurse shoes, and a nurse hat adorned with several pins she had earned in her career. Back in those days nurses wore all white. There were no multi-colored scrubs. Once we were all

checked in at the front desk we sat down in the waiting room, or what my sister and I thought of as the “waiting to die room,” and waited to be called back to see the doctor. Dr. Johnson’s office had a huge play area set up on each side of the front desk. It was equipped with rocking horses, tricycles, Lincoln logs, books, puzzles, work benches, and the most beautiful fish tank. My mother always tried to get my sister and I to go play while we were waiting, but we always just sat there. We were too scared to move. In fact, if I could have dissolved into the chair I would have…I was that fearful. Before we knew it, our time was up. There in her white uniform and hat was Dr. Johnson’s nurse, Sandy, standing in front of us with our charts ready to take us back to the examination room. My mother would stand up and say, “Okay girls, let’s go on back and get ready to see Dr. Johnson.” I would grab my mother’s hand and hold on very tightly as we took that long walk down the hall to our assigned room. Once inside Sandy would take our temperature, weigh us, and write it down on our charts. She would always follow that with an “I’ll be right back.” We knew what that meant—that’s where the not-so-fun part started. The door would open and there would be Sandy standing there with a small hose hanging out of her mouth with two glass slides and a blade to prick our finger. Back in the ‘60s a small hose the size of a drinking straw was attached to a pipette and was placed in the nurse’s mouth to draw a small amount blood which was then blown out on a glass slide for testing. Once the finger pricking procedure was completed, Dr. Johnson would enter and check us over from head-to-toe. He would look in our ears, our eyes, our mouths, feel our necks for lumps and bumps, and then check our breathing and listen to our hearts. I was always the first one to jump off the examination table, but not without my mother telling me to get back up there because the checkup was not complete. Somehow, I thought that if my mother kept talking to the doctor, they would both forget about the shots. Meanwhile, my sister Karen would inch closer and closer to the door, hoping to sneak out,
but guess what? The door would open and there would be Sandy the nurse standing in the doorway holding a tray with two containers of Polio serum, two DPT shots for Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis, and two Booster shots. All I remember is that seeing those Booster shots boosted me and my sister into tears. Those shots hurt, and we were deathly afraid of needles. After the shots had been given, Dr. Johnson would break the needles off and give us the empty syringes to play with in the bathtub. He would also give us balloons, rings, erasers, and all kinds of trinkets from his goody drawer, but that did not stop the tears. My sister and I cried all the way home. My poor mother, along with her nerves, must have been worn out by the time she got us home. Going to see our dentist, Dr. William Midyette, was a different story. Dr. Midyette’s office was located on the second floor of the Mays building on Reynolds Street. To get upstairs you had a choice of an elevator or a winding staircase. My sister and I would always run up the stairs in a race to see who could arrive at the top first. My mother would always scold us and tell us to stop running and act like little ladies. Boy, I wish I could run up those stairs now. Once inside the office, we would step up to the front desk to check in for our appointment. Sometimes we were greeted by Mrs. Harriett Midyette, sometimes by Ms. Nora Horton who made the dentures, or sometimes by some cute young receptionist. Karen and I loved Dr. Midyette and would always bring him our current school photo, which he would promptly hang on the examination room wall. Dr. Midyette used dental equipment called Ritter Dental Units, that at the time were the best in the business. I always thought it was magic how I could put the empty cup back in the holder after I rinsed my mouth and the cup would automatically refill with water. Dr. Midyette would always sing when he worked on his patients and I always thought that was cool. Once our examinations were complete, Dr. Midyette would give my sister and I a
new toothbrush and a great big hug. In later years, my mother told me that how I sat on her lap as a toddler during her appointment with Dr. Midyette. When he came into the room, I would open my mouth for him to check my teeth. My mother told me Dr. Midyette would humor me and count my teeth several times. She said that it made me smile. Once all our doctor’s appointments had been taken care of, then we were off to buy school clothes and school supplies. I can remember in 1968 when I was entering the first grade and my sister was entering the third grade. My mother took us to McCrory’s to shop for notebooks, pencils, pens, erasers, folders, rulers, paste, glue, construction paper, and the list went on. I remember how I wanted to hold my stuff that was in the buggy and my mother explained that these items were for my sister and that first graders did not require those supplies. Well, I was somewhat upset, so later that afternoon my father took me back to McCrory’s and bought me a little pencil box full of colored pencils, erasers, and little do-dads. I was proud as punch and all the more excited to start school. On the first day of school, my sister and I were dressed in our new dresses, new shoes, and our mother had curled our hair. We stood in the driveway and smiled while our father took our picture. We also had our new pocketbooks, new lunch boxes, new notebooks, and in my case, a brand-new pencil box. Looking back, I can remember how frightened my sister and I were when we had to go to the doctor and get shots. We did not understand why our parents made us go through something we were so afraid of. At age 56, there are still things I do not understand about life, but there is without a doubt one thing I do — and that is how much my parents loved us. They wanted the best for us—to be healthy and happy—and they took care of us. I do not know whatever happened to my shiny new pencil box, but I do know this: I was blessed with the best parents in the world.

Taco Tuesday at Norma’s More Than Just a Sandwich Shop BY CIERRA CRAFT

n recent years, the phrase “Taco Tuesday” has gained popularity and now Plant City residents can join in on the weekly meal deal at Norma’s. Each Tuesday, the popular downtown eatery offers tacos and taco bowls, with a rotating menu of protein options, including flavors like shredded pork, al pastor and fish, among others. Taco Tuesday begins at 11:00 AM through close weekly. Norma’s general manager Leo Mesquita says new kitchen staff started making fresh homemade tortillas, which when paired with the shredded pork used on the restaurant’s cuban sandwiches, created a delicious taco. Mesquita received positive feedback from customers and in late June, Norma’s hosted their first Taco Tuesday. For $4.50, customers receive three homemade flour tortillas, stuffed with Norma’s shredded pork, topped with chopped onions and cilantro. Each week, the taco offerings differ, allowing customers to explore new flavors each Tuesday. Customers are also given the option of purchasing taco bowls, built on a bed of crispy homemade tortilla chips, topped with meat, lettuce, diced tomatoes, onions, shredded cheese, and sour cream. Each week, the taco bowl protein options vary, as well. Prices start at $6.00 Mesquita says Norma’s brand has always been built around offering more than sandwiches. Mexican cuisine allows the restaurant to cater to a new clientele and the restaurant’s chef Andy Nassar developed the menu, creating a balance of texture, aroma and color. “We have the greatest chef in Plant City and an excellent kitchen staff,” said Mesquita. “By diversifying the menu with bowls, we can offer more than tacos on Tuesday.” From the success of Norma’s Cuban sandwiches, monthly Night at Norma’s, catering and meal prep options, Taco Tuesday is sure to be a hit. Invite your coworkers to lunch and head down to 120 N. Collins Street each Tuesday to enjoy fresh flavor offerings in historic downtown.
