Plant City Chamber Releases New Map & Guide for Downtown By Jennifer Jordan
H
ave you ever found yourself trying to navigate downtown Plant City and struggling to find a business or shop? If so, then you need to grab a copy of the brand new 2022 Plant City Map and Guide! Plant City Chamber Membership and Marketing Director Jerilyn Rumbarger stated, “The Map and Guide includes an overview of the Plant City area and is designed to drive tourism and overnight stays for our community. The businesses listed are all Plant City Chamber of Commerce members and fall within the tourism industry categories or within our downtown district.” A printed map and directory have been the most requested item by guests who visit the tourist information center and the chamber wanted to help tourists and residents navigate their way through downtown Plant City. The Plant City Chamber of Commerce partnered with Visit Tampa Bay and created the Map and Guide, with Rumbarger stating, “We always enjoy working with our partners at Visit Tampa Bay to bring new initiatives to our area. We started working with our designer, Krupa Patel, in the beginning of December. We worked extremely hard to ensure that this Map and Guide will serve our community and welcome visitors from all over the world. Now that the Map and Guide is finished, we are looking forward to providing residents and visitors with this helpful resource.” The Map and Guide can be picked up at the Plant City Tourist Information Center at 118 W. Reynolds Street. The Map and Guide will also be available at the Tampa and Ybor Tourist Information Centers. It will even be at the Visit Florida Information Center in Tallahassee, Tampa International Airport, and placed in every hotel room in Plant City. There is also a digital copy available on the Chamber of Commerce’s website, although the map is most easily viewed in person. Plant City Celebrates
19th Annual Black Heritage Gala

n February 11, Plant City Black Heritage Celebration, Inc. hosted the 19th annual Black Heritage Gala at the John R. Trinkle Center. At the Black Heritage Gala, attendees enjoyed networking, fellowship, dinner, and a message on defining success for yourself by keynote speaker and author Derrick McBride. The theme for the gala was “Health and Wellness For All”, and Rooms To Go Foundation was the title sponsor. The evening began with the Master of Ceremony Lesley Miller welcoming attendees, and Pastor Dean Pfeffer led the invocation. Strawberry Crest High School performed the presentation of colors, and Gloriece Hallback sang the national anthem. Mayor Rick Lott and Commissioner Mary Mathis introduced city, county, and state officials, including Congress member C. Scott Franklin, who stated in a letter to Sharon Moody and gala attendees, “Tonight, as we come together to celebrate the 19th Annual Black Heritage Educational and Cultural Festival, we reaffirm that as Americans we are bound to each other by our common resolve and shared expectations for a brighter future.” Dinner was then served and consisted of ham, chicken, pig’s feet, green beans, collard greens, yellow rice, and salad. After dinner, Steve Hurley, owner of Stingray Chevrolet, introduced keynote speaker and author, Derrick McBride. McBride, a former NFL player, shared his journey of writing his book, One Search For All, and the inspirational true story based on the real-life events of his grandfather, Jack McBride. McBride discussed defining success and noted, “I know what it’s like to fail. If you feel like you’re failing, get back up. Keep going. Take a step. Keep taking steps because when you look back, you’ll be able to tell the story that you know the world needs to hear.” After McBride’s inspirational speech, Sharon Moody and Carolyn Brown presented awards to deserving individuals due to their contributions, dedication to the community, and willingness to lend a helping hand. The awards and winners are as follows: • Lifetime Achievement Award- Bettye Goodwine • Cornerstone Award- Mount Olive African Methodist Episcopal Church • Community Service Award- Candace Greene • Humanitarian Award- DeeDee Gregory • Heritage Award- Bertha L. Ingram
The evening concluded with Sharon Moody thanking everyone for attending. She stated, “Thank you to everyone for attending and for all of our generous sponsors. Our children and others who are not as familiar with our history need these events to understand the sacrifices African Americans made to make this nation what it is.” Minister Denzel Singleton then gave the benediction. As everyone was saying their goodbyes to one another, the room was filled with appreciation and respect for those who make a difference in our community. With the countless contributions that African Americans have made in our community and country, it’s important to celebrate their achievements. With events like the Black Heritage Gala, African American culture, history, and art will continue to be shared, appreciated, and valued for years to come.

Tampa Bay Blueberry Festival Returns to Keel Farms By Jennifer Jordan
O
n April 8, 9, 10, 15, and 16, Keel Farms will hold a celebration of the spring blueberry harvest by hosting the Tampa Bay Blueberry Festival. Open 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., the festival is a family and pet-friendly event that will span five days and two weekends. With over 100 food and craft vendors, a kid’s area, live music, and craft beer, wine, and cider, there is something for everyone to enjoy. There will also be a u-pick available so attendees can take home fresh blueberries right off the bush. To ensure an excellent experience for all the guests, this will be a ticketed event. There will also be check-in window times of 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. to allow for the ease of parking and traffic. Please check in during your selected window time. Tickets are limited and on sale now at www.keelfarms.com/festivals. Adult Picker Tickets are $19.99 and include parking, admission, a u-pick pass with a take-home souvenir bucket, and two free pounds of blueberries. Adult Picker Pal Tickets are $14.99 and include parking and general admission to the farm. Kid’s Tickets are $9.99 and include general admission to the farm (valid for kids ages 3-12). Kids ages two and under are free. Since picker tickets will include buckets, no outside buckets or containers will be permitted. It is recommended that guests wear close-toed shoes for roaming the farm, sunscreen, and comfortable clothing. Jack Holland named 2022 Citizen of the Year

By Cierra Craft n February 16, Jack Holland was named the 63rd recipient of one of the city’s most prestigious awards: Citizen of the Year. The recipient of the award is chosen by a board of civic leaders from Aspire Plant City, Daybreak Rotary, GFWC Woman’s Club, Kiwanis Club, Lions Club, Noon Rotary Club, Optimist Club, and the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce under strict criteria of nine rules including that recipient cannot be seeking a political office or fulfilling their job-related duties, as well as, the recipient has given of themselves freely for many years and asked for nothing in return. The recipient’s name is a closely-guarded secret prior to the actual presentation at the luncheon with nominees being considered for service impacting the benefit of all and betterment of the community. Selection criteria include long-term selfless contributions of time, energy, and resources apart from the individual’s career responsibilities. 2021 Citizen of the Year Sandee Sytsmacame to the microphone and gave highlights of Holland’s life, including 45 years of service to the city of Plant City as an employee, his involvement in the Visit Plant City Task Force and PCHS Business Advisor Board. Holland, an avid soccer fan, has traveled around the globe to attend World Cup soccer tournaments, and five decades of public service. Holland was selected for his work with the Plant City Optimist Club, where he has served as a past president, vice president, and has been named Optimist of the Year an impressive four times. Holland is a dedicated volunteer of the Optimist Club’s Christmas Tree stand, Plant City Pig Jam, and served as a past board member of the Plant City Family YMCA. In 2012 and 2021, Holland has been named a Chamber Good Egg and in 2019, he was a nominee for the Florida State Referees Hall of Fame for his work as a youth soccer referee. Holland is the first recipient in the history of the award who wasn’t able to attend the luncheon. Due to a back injury, Holland was not present at the luncheon and said around 12:30 p.m., as his name was announced to those in attendance, his phone began to ring with texts in congratulations. His family was present to accept the award on his behalf, speaking to Holland’s commitment to serving the city he loves. “I have attended the luncheon for over 20 years and I have read the list of recipients… I just never imagined my name would be among them,” said Holland. He says he is overwhelmed, humbled, and thankful to be named Plant City’s 2022 Citizen of the Year.

First Call Church Invites Public to 3 Year Anniversary
alden Lake Community Association Board Meetings are held the third Monday of each month at 6:30 at the Walden Lake Community Association office building on Griffin Boulevard in Walden Lake. The next meetings will be held on March 21st and April 25th. Please keep an eye on the announcement boards at all entrances for dates and times of special meetings and events. Meetings are now being held in person although you can still log in to www.WaldenLake.org and view the meeting virtually on zoom. The Annual Meeting is scheduled for April 21st at 7:00 and is being held at the Plant City Church of God at 2103 Mud Lake Road. Each of the 9 HOA Board of Directors are elected and serve a three-year term. Each year three positions are open for election and are voted on during the annual meeting. The Planning Board Meeting was held on February 23rd where Walden Lake LLC was looking for a vote to allow the rezoning for redevelopment of the golf course. The Planning Board unanimously voted to oppose the proposal. The rumor is that the rezoning will now go before the City Commissioners either in April or May for approval. The food trucks at the HOA Building/Sports Complex are on the second Fridays and last Sundays of each month. If you have not taken advantage of the delicious offerings, give it a try! Plant City Youth Dominate in Hockey, Cheer Competitions By Cierra Craft
D
urant Hockey Heads to HS State Championship Tournament for Third Consecutive Year Durant’s Hockey team secured a return trip to this year’s state tournament held at RDV Sportsplex in Orlando, February 25 through 27. This year’s squad had to replace the program’s all-time leading scorer in Jordan Putnam and five stalwart defensemen on the back end. Well, as they say, good programs don’t rebuild, they simply reload. An infusion of talented freshmen, along with several returning veterans, led the team back to the state tournament. Durant’s outstanding season came to an end in a 2-0 loss in the semifinals of the state championship tourney against the eventual champ, J.W. Mitchell High School of New Port Richey. The class of ‘22 advanced to 3 state championship tournaments, 2 final fours, 1 state title game, and 1 Lightning Cup final. The state championship tournament concluded Head Coach Todd Comunale’s final season with this third iteration of the Durant program he reestablished five years ago, as he has announced he’s stepping aside at the season’s end. With a regular-season record of 66 wins, 30 losses & 14 ties, and a playoff record of 10 & 5, with 3 losses in overtime, Coach Comunale is confident the staff currently in place will continue the winning tradition at Durant.

omin’ In Hot: PC Dolphins Cheer Take on Global Championships On Saturday, February 26, Plant City Dolphins 11U and 10U Cheer teams competed in the 2022 YCADA Global Championships in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The competition took place in the Tropicana Resort Casino Showcase, a broadway-style theater that seats 2,500 spectators. Dolphins Cheer Director and 11U Head Coach Amanda Duncan said when PCD switched from Tri-County to Pop Warner, it challenged the coaches to learn a new set of rules and score sheets. It also challenged the cheerleaders to learn new skills and routines. “The athletes really stepped up and stayed dedicated,” said Duncan. The 10U team finished in 4th place and the 11U girls are the 2022 Level 3 Global Champions. The 11U team had zero deductions from the judges, meaning it was flawless. The 11U Dolphins faced off against rival Naples Hurricanes, all season the two teams competed against each other with the Dolphins winning 1st place at the FYD Conference and Pop Warner Regional competitions, Hurricanes won 1st at Nationals with PCD falling to 2nd, and the Global championships were the Dolphins’ chance to come out on top. They did just that. Mitey Mites (10U) is coached by Elizabeth Garcia. The team won 1st place and Grand Champions of the FYD Conference then placed 1st and received Highest Choreography at the Pop Warner Southeast Regionals competition. The team then won 3rd Place at Nationals before receiving 4th at YCADA Globals. PAGE

lant City has always been a town centered around the community. Full of events, festivals, galas, and parties, Plant City has consistently been a wholesome town full of giving. While growing, our city has maintained its small-town charm and as a result, provides many resources to residents of the community that many do not know about. Some of the resources that Plant City offers are classes and programs at both the Sadye Gibbs Martin Community Center and the Planteen Recreation Center and Winter Visitor Center. Most of the classes are free or low cost and are varied so there is a class for everyone. Here is your guide to the classes and programs that each center offers for kids, teens, adults, and seniors. Sadye Gibbs Martin Community Center is located at 302 S. Maryland Avenue and can be reached at 813-659-4253 for further questions and information. Here are some of the following programs/classes that are offered: EDUCATIONAL After School Program: This program is for school-aged children aged 5-12. They also provide transportation from the following Plant City Elementary Schools: Burney, Bryan, Lincoln, Wilson, and Jackson. Space is limited. Fees are $175 per child per semester. Transportation Fees are $25 per child per semester. DSLA Tutoring: Tutoring for school-aged children. No Cost. Mondays and Wednesdays during the school year from 6PM-7PM. FITNESS Xtreme Hip-Hop Step and Burn: Xtreme Hip Hop is a high energy toning and cardio class created by Phillip Weeden. Mondays and Thursdays from 5:30PM-6:30PM. Instructors: Lisa Bradley and Heaven Waddell. DJ Ken Miller’s Morning Dance: Open to all ages and ability levels. Come enjoy a wide variety of music or dance to your own beat. No judgment, just fun! All music genres will be played. Song requests encouraged. Wednesdays from 10AM-12PM. Cost is $3. Instructor: Ken Miller at 863-409-7714 Line Dance: Choreographed line dance related to all types of music. Enjoy repeated sequence steps! This fun group class will have you eager to learn line dancing basics while staying active. Beginner class: Tuesday 5:30pm; advanced class: Wednesday 5:30pm. No cost. Plant City rolled out the red carpet for the 2022 Florida Strawberry Festival from March 3 to March 13, welcoming half of a million guests to the city. Themed “#1 for Fun,” the Florida Strawberry Festival ushered in midway rides, exciting new foods, sweet strawberries, and agricultural shows for FFA and 4H students.

Mayor Rick Lott was among the city officials to throw beads to the spectators of the Grand Parade. Belle City Amusements is the host the midway rides and carnival games. One of the most popular rides are on the swings and the Festival offers discounts on armbands on select days for midway rides. Plant City’s youngest residents compete in the annual Diaper Derby as part of the Baby Contest, sponsored by South Florida Baptist Hospital.
The Florida Strawberry Festival is ranked among the Top 40 Fairs in North America and the Top 100 Fairs in the World. More than 10,000 acres of strawberries are planted each year with nearly 3000 farms throughout the county. These crops produce an annual value of $360 million. FOCUS Magazine takes a look back at the Festival and give you a look at the events, entertainment, and eats you might have missed.

March 3 The opening day of the Florida Strawberry Festival began with plenty of sunshine and low humidity. Gates opened at 10:00 a.m., welcoming the first visitors into Berryfest 22. Each day of the festival begins with a salute to freedom with the National Anthem performed over the public address system. The fairgrounds seem to freeze in time as hands are placed over hearts. Once completed, the fair day festivities begin again. On the Wish Farms Soundstage, 18-time Grammy Award winners Jimmy Sturr and His Orchestra performed fanfavorite polka hits for the dancing audience’s delight. 2006 Florida Strawberry Festival Queen Hannah Benton and her grandfather Raymond Hodge, who Hannah calls “Honey,” have polka danced together at the Jimmy Sturr concert for five years. It’s a tradition they both look forward to year after year. “We started this tradition about five years ago after we lost my grandmother, Martha Hodge,” said Benton. “My grandpa, Honey loves to dance so I invited him to attend Opening Day with me to cheer him up. I remember Opening Day Polka Dancing was one of my favorite things I did as Strawberry Queen back in 2006. Needless to say, Honey and I really enjoyed it and now look forward to it every year!!”

But Benton and Honey weren’t the only duos on their feet. 2022 Florida Strawberry Festival Queen Kenley Connell and her court joined in, dancing with each other and audience members. First Maid Madison Davis polka danced with 1971 Queen Sherrie Chambers Mueller. On March 3 at 7:00 p.m., The Mosaic Youth Swine Show was held in the Patterson Company Livestock Arena in the Grimes Family Agricultural Center. Seventy-eight students participated in the 40th anniversary of the swine show. In the show, each pig is placed in one of nine classes based on weight. The winner of each class then competes for the title of the grand champion. At the show, Paul Davis, President of the Florida Strawberry Festival, stated, “The agricultural side of the festival is so important. These youth showing their plants and animals is a part of what we (the festival) are. Everyone’s a winner, and we wish everyone the best of luck tonight.” Jaylynn Wood of Barrington FFA exhibited the grand champion swine at the 2022 Swine Show. Reserve grand champion was awarded to Georgia Kimbrell of Turkey Creek FFA.

Team Ice Ice Baby were the declared winners of the Peachy’s Amish Donut Eating Contest. The team ate four donuts in less than six minutes.
After the Youth Swine Show, the showmanship competition began. Instead of the animal being judged, the showmen are judged on how well they present their animals to the judge. In the senior division, Avery Ashley placed first. In the intermediate division, Grand Champion Jaylynn Wood placed first. In the junior division, Kay Wood placed first. Reserve Grand Champion Georgia Kimbrell placed third in showmanship.
Contest. Three team members were challenged with eating a glazed donut without their hands, the fourth and final team member was then presented with Peachy’s Sweetheart donut to eat without their hands. The sweetheart is a glazed donut, topped with berries, drizzled in chocolate syrup, and topped with whipped cream. In the end, team “Ice Ice Baby” were declared the winners, who finished their four donuts in just under six minutes.
The Florida Strawberry Festival hosts seven youth livestock shows in total: swine, steers, beef cattle, dairy cattle, lambs, and chickens. All livestock shows and the swine sale and steer sale take place in the Patterson Companies Livestock Arena.
On March 4 at 7:00 p.m., in the Patterson Livestock Arena in the Grimes Agricultural Center, 78 students from across Hillsborough County sold their swine in the annual Mosaic Youth Swine Sale. With the highest bid at $20 per pound and the lowest bid at $7 per pound, the average price per pound for a swine was $13.87 per pound. If a buyer does not want to keep their swine but rather donate it, they could donate the swine to the Florida FFA Foundation, the United Food Bank of Plant City, and Florida Baptist Children’s Homes, among other organizations and charities. Jaylynn Wood, who had the grand champion swine, sold her swine at $20 per pound with a weight of 250. Georgia Kimbrell, who had the reserve grand champion swine, sold her swine at $19.90 per pound with a weight of 266. Jaylynn’s swine was sold to Sam Astin of Astin Farms.
March 4 The second day of the Festival was another hot one, but it didn’t keep families from coming out to the midway for Publix Food and Fun Friday. Any guest who presented any Publix brand or GreenWise non-perishable received a voucher for $5 off the $30 wristband and ride most mechanical rides for only $25. At noon, four teams took to the Publix Showcase Case tent for the 5th Annual Peachy’s Co. Amish Donut Eating

March 5 On Saturday, March 5, the Florida Strawberry Festival played host to Contemporary Christian singer Lauren Daigle on the Wish Farms Soundstage. Daigle’s show was sold out, selling 10, 340 tickets. Lauren Daigle’s inaugural visit to the Florida Strawberry Festival was the second highest-selling show in Festival history. “I’m not surprised! We’re overjoyed so many people are as excited to see Lauren Daigle as we are,” said Florida Strawberry Festival President Paul Davis.
In the most handsome boy contests, Cash Kirby Christie won the 6 to 9 months category and Grayson James Creech won the 10 to 13 months category. Ryker Joshua Standard won the 14 to 18 months category.
Those that attended the concert, raved about Daigle’s show. Many noted that it seemed her voice echoed throughout the entire festival grounds and in their review of the show said they’d enjoy seeing Daigle perform at the Festival again.
In the diaper derby, Sophia Martin won the 6 to 8 months category, and Tynsleigh Reese Mintzer won the 9 to 12 months category. Sophia Martin won the overall diaper derby contest.
“My daughter and I were at the concert and had an amazing time for sure!!” said one concert goer. Another added, “She is always so amazing! Talented, beautiful & full of light, love and Jesus!”
March 6 On March 6 in the Publix Showcase Tent at 10:30 a.m., Festival goers witnessed dozens of the youngest and cutest contestants at the Baby Contest and Diaper Derby. The annual baby contest—sponsored by South Florida Baptist Hospital—saw babies from the Hillsborough County area get dressed up to compete in three different segments of the competition: the decorated diaper contest, features contest, and the diaper derby. In the diaper derby, the fastest crawling baby wins. Matilda Pearl Ruane won the Florida Strawberry Festival theme diaper category, and Tynsleigh Reese Mintzer won the most creative diaper category.

In the feature contests, Mia Belle Bernal won the baldest head. Savannah Rae Speneer won the chubbiest cheeks, and Grayson Matthews won the most hair. In the prettiest girl contests, Halston Paige Zimmerman won the 6 to 9 months category. Scarlett Montana Procter won the 10 to 13 months category, and Denver Lousie Cedeno won the 14 to 18 months category.
March 7 Grand Parade Day is practically a Plant City holiday. Businesses close to either participate in the hometown tradition or join the crowds gathering to watch the processional and kids are granted a day off from school throughout Hillsborough County. The Grand Parade is presented by Berry Fine Productions, led by director Gail Lyons. Lyons shared with FOCUS weeks prior to parade day “I think we will have the biggest, best parade we have ever had!” And big parade it was, the parade was a two-hour event, marching north on Evers Street, turning west on Reynolds and passing the festivalgrounds thereafter. Parade participants included city officials Mayor Lott and the City Commission, county commissioners and school board officials, as well as local law enforcement officials from Plant City Police Department, Hillsborough County Sheriff, Florida Highway Patrol, Plant City Fire Rescue, and more. The parade featured clowns, dancing strawberries,
and even mascots, such as Captain Fear of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Thunder Bug from the Tampa Bay Lightning. The bill was sent to the Governor on Friday, March 4, after the House voted 109-4 to send it to the governor.

On March 7, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis visited the Florida Strawberry Festival and signed SB 1006, designating Strawberry Shortcake as Florida’s official state dessert.

“So this designation, of the strawberry shortcake as the state dessert, is a way to pay tribute to the strawberry farmers and what they have contributed to our state and our agriculture industry,” Gov. DeSantis said during his press conference in Plant City. “This is an important part of Florida and the farmers have helped put us on the map.” State Senator Danny Burgess, a Republican whose district includes portions of Hillsborough County, introduced the bill in addition to Representative Lawrence McClure (R-Dover). With over 200,000 strawberry shortcakes sold each year at the Strawberry Festival alone, it’s difficult to ignore the impact strawberries have in our state. “Signing this bill at the Strawberry Festival is one way that we are supporting our Florida strawberry farmers and is a tribute to the more than 10,000 acres of strawberries that are grown in the greater Plant City area,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “As a fifth generation Floridian and a native of Plant City, I am delighted and proud that our Governor and the Legislature are making Strawberry Shortcake the official state dessert,” said Attorney General Ashley Moody. “Plant City grows more than three-quarters of the country’s winter strawberries that help make this delicious dessert and support Florida’s economy. I hope everyone tries a bite of Strawberry Shortcake in celebration.”
March 9 At 6:00 p.m. in the Patterson Livestock Arena in the Grimes Agricultural Center, ninety-one students from across Hillsborough County participated in the annual Mosaic Youth Steer Show. This year was the show’s 50th anniversary, with many past grand champions and reserve grand champions in attendance to honor the show’s special anniversary and give support to the students showing. Spencer Baylor of Strawberry Crest FFA exhibited the grand champion steer at the 2022 Steer Show. Baylor’s steer Puff weighed 1,274 pounds and Baylor stated about winning, “It was an amazing feeling to win the grand champion. I cannot describe it, it was a huge emotional rush.” Baylor also stated about Puff, “Puff was really good in the ring, I’m super happy with how he behaved.” Reserve grand champion was awarded to Jayden Mathena of Durant FFA. 2022 Strawberry Queen Kenley Connell also showed a steer at this year’s show. She finished fourth in her class. At the time of publication, information on the subsequent Steer Showmanship and Steer Sale were not available.

Parkesdale Market named RCA winner for Best Shortcake & Milkshake By Cierra Craft
While strawberries were grown in Plant City long before Roy and Helen Parke’s arrival to Dover in 1956, the Parke family put the community on the map for strawberry shortcake and other desserts. Today, the market is operated by third-generation owners Jim and Xiomara Meeks and people flock to the market from across the globe for World Famous strawberry shortcake and nationally-recognized milkshakes. Parkesdale Market was recently named FOCUS Magazine’s Readers’ Choice Award winners for Best Strawberry Shortcake and Best Milkshake, a title the local hot spot has held since FOCUS’ inaugural awards in 2002. Meet family matriarch Helen Parke, her grandson Jim Meeks and his wife Xi, as the trio talk about Parkesdale Market, where strawberries are king. The legend that is Parkesdale Farms began when the company founder R.E. (Roy) Parke emigrated from Ireland to Pennsylvania in 1924 at age 5 during the Potato Famine. The family settled in Pennsylvania and continued farming, offering veggies and fruit trees. Enlisted in the Army, a young Roy Parke would visit the local five-and-ten store, where Helen worked behind the stationary counter; they met in 1943 and were married within five weeks. When Roy and Helen moved to Plant City in the 1950s, Roy began his farming career with strawberries. Together, Roy and Helen founded Parkesdale Farms, starting with just 10 acres of strawberries. Throughout the years, they expanded the farm to over 200 acres of the finest strawberries, citrus, and vegetables. In October 1968, Roy and Helen founded Parkesdale Farm Market, which was a small roadside stand to sell their strawberries by the flat. The couple ran a market in Pennsylvania selling tomatoes and other vegetables, so the concept wasn’t new to them. Parkesdale Farm Market started simply from the back of a pickup truck, then grew over the years to its current location on 92. “At that time, [U.S. 92] wasn’t a very busy road, maybe one car every few minutes,” said Helen Parke, who will turn 97 in July. “The market was very small in the beginning so as Plant City grew, so did the market.”

On a busy day, Parkesdale Farm Market makes approximately 1,700 shortcakes per day. Visitors come for the strawberry desserts and stay for the produce, plants, and more.
In the late 1970s, their daughter, Cheryl, and her husband Jim Meeks took over the market. Under their management, the couple began selling strawberry desserts, such as strawberry cookies and milkshakes, which sold for 75 cents at the time, according to Jim and Cheryl’s son and current owner and operator, Jim Meeks. Across the street from the market, a family sold strawberry shortcakes with hand-sliced berries. Jim and Cheryl didn’t want to compete with them, but when the couple decided to retire, the Meeks started selling strawberry shortcake. Little did they realize, it would become worldfamous. Every winter, people flock to Parkesdale Farm Market from across the U.S., Europe, and Asia, for a bowl of fresh-from-the-field berries, atop a shortcake base, and served with a generous portion of whipped cream. “Our shortcake is a little cake and a little biscuit, to appeal to people who like both,” said Xiomara, Jim’s wife. “It’s sweet but also moist to soak up the berry juices.” On a busy day, Parkesdale Farm Market sells approximately 1,700 strawberry shortcakes and roughly estimates it has sold 4.5 million shortcakes over its 40 years. The company will stop selling shortcakes when the farm stops producing berries, typically in April. On Monday, March 7, Governor Ron DeSantis visited the Florida Strawberry Festival to sign CS/SB 1006, a bill designating strawberry shortcake as Florida’s official state dessert.

DeSantis was joined by Plant City native, former Strawberry Festival Queen and current Attorney General Ashley Moody, Festival president Paul Davis, PCPD Chief Jim Bradford, Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister, Festival chairman Phil Waldron, Kenneth Parker of the Florida Strawberry Growers Association, as well as Mayor Rick Lott and Vice Mayor Michael Sparkman. Upon signing, DeSantis handed out the pens used to sign the bill into law. Bradford gave his pen to Roy and Helen’s daughter, Sandee Parke Sytsma. “Our Police Chief, Jim Bradford, gave his [pen] to me saying our family deserved to have one since we were synonymous with shortcakes in Plant City,” said Sytsma. “I thanked him and assured him we would have it mounted and displayed in a place of honor.” Parkesdale’s milkshakes—including the strawberry flavor—are sold year-round. Flavors include strawberry, peach, mango, chocolate, cafe mocha, banana, papaya, vanilla, pineapple, coconut, and piña colada. Xiomara says Parkesdale milkshakes were named Food Network’s Top Ten desserts The milkshakes are made with vanilla ice cream and spun, creating chunks of fruit, cookies, etc., depending on the flavor ordered. Parkesdales’ milkshakes bring people from near and far, with some fans online saying they travel hours during festival season for a Parkesdale strawberry milkshake.
Some of those award-winning desserts have been made for presidential hopefuls, including John McCain, Barack Obama, and the Bush family— George H.W., George W., and Jeb. The market is a popular campaign stop for those seeking to secure the Interstate 4 Corridor and win the politically divided Hillsborough County. In an interview with NPR’s First and Main, Jim Meeks shared the day he made Barack Obama a strawberry milkshake ahead of the 2008 election, “I told him if he didn’t drink it, he would not be elected. ... And he laughed and he said, ‘Well, give me one.’ “ Other items at Parkesdale have established a following, including the company’s strawberry cookies, preserves, and bread, each made with the pride of Parkesdale berries. Helen Parke is the matriarch of the Parke family and known as the “original Strawberry Queen,” due to her and late husband Roy Parke’s contributions to the strawberry industry. Mrs. Parke started the Parkesdale Farm Market from the back of a pick up truck in the late 1960s.

lant City native Chelsea Wilkerson believes in “finding contentment, joy and gratitude in a simple life and everyday routines.” Thanks to her love of her hometown, her education in the agricultural industry, and her talents for marketing, Chelsea is thrilled to work as the Director of Marketing for Fred’s Market and Johnson Barbeque restaurants. Describe a little of your Plant City history. The Florida Strawberry Festival has been an important part of my life as I served as the Junior Royalty Queen in 2011 and as a member of the Queen’s Court in 2012. I also enjoyed serving my Plant City High School Raiders community as Senior Class President before earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Education with a minor in Communications from the University of Florida. And you’re a wife and mother now, too, right? Yes, I’m married to my high school sweetheart Preston, who is a UPS driver with a route in Plant City’s Springhead area. Our son Paxton, who is almost two, is smart, adventurous, rambunctious and the light of our lives. He keeps us on our toes and has since the day he was born. What occupies your spare time? I love spending quality time with my family, the sunshine, iced coffee, a good book and affordable fashion. I am an Amazon Affiliate Ambassador and share all sorts of fun, trendy, and adorable fashion items in photos and videos on my Instagram @imchelseawilkerson. How did you step into your current career? I have worked in the marketing industry almost five years now. During college I served at Fred’s Market and after graduating I started a job with a marketing firm. I love the Johnson family and their brands, and I was elated to join their corporate team. Currently, I’m the Director of Marketing for Fred’s Market Restaurants and Johnson Barbeque. I have experience in social media management for other businesses such as an online women’s clothing boutique, family medical practice and more. I’m always looking to take on new clients and assist small businesses with their marketing and social media needs. Share a favorite Florida Strawberry Festival memory -One of my best memories was just last year when we took our son. He was almost one, so already a busy body with a big personality. My parents, who are separated, my stepmother, my siblings and my maternal grandmother all went to the Strawberry Festival on the same evening for Paxton’s first trip. It was the best to have all sides of my family together partaking in something so important to our town and also to each of us. Paxton had his first taste of cotton candy and strawberry shortcake, and we made the best memories. This year I am looking forward to taking him again and chasing him (he’s a runner) around the Festival. I can’t wait for him to ride the carousel. And what do you appreciate most about our town? Plant City is simple, quaint, quiet and home. It’s so special for its charm, closeness, and wonderful community. I’m grateful to have grown up here and I love raising my son here.

he commencement of spring is a symbol of transformation, a time for renewal, seeking growth, and embracing innovation. This makes March aptly suited to host a monthlong examination of the role women have played in American history, an often-omitted group equally instrumental to the development of our almost 250-year-old nation. Dedicated as Women’s History Month in 1987, the tribute came as a result of the revival of the feminist movement which reinforced the position of women as committed instigators of social reform since America’s founding. Despite two centuries’ lack of acknowledgment, they banded together to overcome their relegation to history’s margins through acts of service designed to uplift and promote equality. The rise of the club movement occurred in the decades following the Civil War, born from a society attempting to rebuild itself and interlinked with changes brought about by the Industrial Revolution. Shifting ideas about work and leisure, gender norms, and race played a significant role in the actions taken within these clubs. Though formed out of small literary, civic, religious, artistic, and scientific groups, women’s clubs expanded to encompass these interests while also pushing boundaries. Like most clubs of the early movement, the mission of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) focused on community improvement. As 19th-century journalist Jane Cunningham Croly stated, it presented a “community of feeling”, empowering women through knowledge and a shared desire toward service for all. In fact, it is summed up in the organization’s motto, “unity in diversity”, camaraderie among women of different social and ethnic backgrounds working for the advancement of everyone. Plant City’s Woman’s Club is an outstanding example of the GFWC’s motto, and the development of our town has been heavily influenced by the actions of the club and its individual members. Through active involvement in matters such as intellectual betterment, education and child development, health and well-being, environmental sustainability which affect each of us personally as well as a community the Woman’s Club remains one of the city’s oldest volunteer service organizations.

One of the largest ventures taken on by the early pioneers of the Woman’s Club was the building of a public library. As seekers of knowledge, these women understood the importance of intellectual growth and recognized the rise of women’s higher education during the 1920s. The feat itself was a huge undertaking that each member of the organization played some role in during the nearly 40year endeavor. Regardless of the library’s meager beginnings (a small meeting room in the Central Grammar school housing 317 books in 1929) the current Bruton Memorial Library houses over 100,000 books for the community to enjoy. To this day, the Woman’s Club maintains its strong ties to the library. One particular tradition that the club has is donating books in memory of members who have passed away, a final act of service that instills a sense of unity through the gift of shared knowledge. Congratulations to the Woman’s Club of Plant City as they celebrate their 100th year. Luther
Scarlett, Jr. By Jennifer Jordan
Luther Scarlett Jr. is a sophomore at Durant High School and is a wide receiver for the Cougars’ football team. Luther also currently plays baseball at Durant and plays in the outfield position. He started playing for both teams this past year but has played football for 12 years and baseball for seven, playing for the Plant City Dolphins and the Plant City Parks and Recreation Department previously. This football season at the Lennard High School game, Luther had two interceptions and five tackles against the team, and stated about his football goals, “I want to get more tackles this upcoming season.” The Durant football team ended their record for the season at 8-2. Staying busy, Luther balances playing football and baseball, participating in the criminal justice program at Durant, and working at Smokin’ Aces Steakhouse. He said about his life, “I’m living my idea of a perfect life and others can achieve the same if they chase it.” Luther hopes to continue building himself up as an athlete and would like to pay at a division one school after graduating high school. Luther said he would prefer to play football in college but said, “if the opportunity to play both football and baseball is there, I’m going to take it.” With time to hone his athletic skills for college, the future is bright for Luther Scarlett, Jr.

Maker: Deomni Davis; Fairy Chic Charcuterie

eomni Davis is a P.E. (physical education) teacher at Cork Elementary and has been teaching at the school for six years. Deomni has been married for almost five years and her husband teaches P.E. in Polk County. She has two children, a 6-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son. In her spare time, Deomni enjoys reading, painting, being outdoors, and being creative with her children. She also enjoys creating charcuterie boards through her business, Fairy Chic Charcuterie. Through Fairy Chic Charcuterie, Davis can create edible art with high-quality meats, cheeses, fruits, vegetables, pickled items, jams, and more. Deomni stated about her charcuterie boards, “I say my boards are luxury eater-tainment; they’re a conversation piece. Like a water cooler at work, people can gather around, converse with one another, and try different combinations.” The boards are perfect for bridal showers, baby showers, trips out on the boat, and holiday parties. The boards come in sizes that range from nine to 24 inches and prices range from $45-$220 with add-ons such as meat, crackers, and cheese words. The boards can serve anywhere from two to 25 people. Davis can also make gluten-free and dairy-free boards and use vegan cheeses for those who have diet restrictions. She uses fresh ingredients and sometimes shops daily for her boards. Davis uses disposable platters but can sell a reusable board so clients can keep bringing the board back to her to reuse and avoid an additional fee. Davis said her boards take her anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours to create, and she mostly works on the weekends due to teaching during the weekdays. “Making charcuterie boards is a creative outlet for me. It’s an art

that you can eat, and it allows me to bring joy to others,” stated Davis. She does in-person or Zoom charcuterie classes where she teaches individuals or groups how to build their own board while providing knowledge and background on various meats and cheeses. The classes are great for a girl’s night or a private event at home. Davis also offers take-and-make boards for those who want to make their own charcuterie board or have a unique date night. Getting 10-20 orders per month, Deomni is hoping to grow Fairy Chic Charcuterie. Currently, her boards can be ordered through Fairy Chic Charcuterie’s Facebook page and paid for through PayPal. However, she is working on launching a website where orders can be placed and paid for. Davis is wanting to be a part of a commercial kitchen because she wants to make sure everything is done by the book. She hopes to increase her orders through more marketing. A goal of hers is to also create grazing tables for corporate events, and Deomni recently made her first grazing table for a baby shower. Davis said of Fairy Chic Charcuterie’s future, “I want to increase our presence in the community. I’d love to collaborate with other women who own their own small business. I’d like to have a shop one day where the community can be serviced daily and sell wine, host jazz musicians, and possibly sell sandwiches made from charcuterie items. Faith Pastor Kerry Beaty By Cheryl Johnston
P
astor Kerry Beaty has led the Lone Oak Missionary Baptist Church congregation since 1998 after serving nine years at Grace Baptist Church in Lake Wales. He and Laquita met at a youth camp at the Florida Baptist Encampment in Groveland, Florida and this coming November will celebrate 39 years of marriage. They have three adult sons (Derek, Landon, and Casey), three grandchildren (Westlyn, Waylon, and John Luke), and three foster sons who are like older brothers to their own. Over the years the Beatys have also hosted six exchange students. Now as empty nesters, Pastor Beaty enjoys watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, walking and exercising, and “spending time with Laquita doing anything she enjoys.” Today she teaches Language Arts at Turkey Creek Middle School and serves as the church pianist. On occasion, the couple sings together, with one of their favorites being “He’s All I Need.” To share faith with individuals, Pastor Kerry likes to find a common interest and then discuss some spiritual aspects of life. From the words of Psalm 90:12, Pastor Beaty encourages everyone to “Number your days and apply your hearts to wisdom. Make every day count!” Describe some details of your own faith walk. I was wet twice before I was truly baptized. At age six, I sat on the front pew with my brother who said, ‘Momma wants us to get saved.’ I was saved and baptized again during my hills-and-valleys teen years. Then at 16, after staring at the ceiling from my bed one night, I got on my knees and ask the Lord to save me. A year later, during my junior year in high school, I felt a pull and calling into the ministry. I told Stephanie Pickney, a band member, and the very next Wednesday night my Pastor asked me to preach. My ‘What is Sin?’ sermon lasted no more than 10 minutes. How did Lone Oak celebrate its 100th anniversary in September of 2021? Wayne Hunter, who was licensed and ordained here, presented a special message. The proclamation Mayor Rick Lott offered at a recent Plant City Commission meeting was read aloud and following the service, we enjoyed ‘dinner on the grounds.’ I’m the nineteenth pastor since Lone Oak was established in 1921 in a pole barn-type building across the street. What’s happening at the church now? Last year we did a Super Bowl Bible Outreach to distribute Bibles for the Precious Seed Ministries at the Super Bowl in Tampa. Our worship-filled Sundays include Sunday School for every age, including a couples’ class at 10:00 a.m., followed by the Worship Service at 11:00 a.m. and an evening sermon at 6:00 p.m. On Wednesday nights, ‘Treehouse Kids’ (pre-K through grade 5) meet at 6:45 p.m., and all others (‘Rooted’ for students in grades 6-12;

college and career group; adults) enjoy Bible study at 7:00 p.m. Our children attend big church on first Sundays monthly and offer a special presentation. We are currently planning and fundraising to construct a multi-purpose building we’ll dedicate as the “Gary Elliott Family Life Center.” We hope it honors the memory of a hard-working sod-hauler and church deacon who recognized the need for youth group gathering space. Sadly, he was killed in a trucking accident in 2014. Lone Oak also serves as a satellite school for the Louisiana-based Faith Bible Institute. Over a three-year period through three separate courses offered on Mondays from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., students will have studied every book of the Bible along with every major Bible doctrine. On Resurrection (Easter) Sunday, we hold our traditional Sunrise Service outdoors. It’s exciting to see our very personable church growing through personal relationships in a variety of cultures. We go out of our way to show love to people. I love this church like I loved the Lake Wales church. I couldn’t pastor a more loving, caring congregation. And we believe that everybody has something to add to Kingdom labor. What do you admire about the Plant City community? This community has a wholesomeness about it and it’s encouraging to know we have morally decent, God-honoring leaders and people in our city. I’ve been touched to know that prayer is still a part of our city’s commission meetings and many other public gatherings.

elcome sweet springtime we greet Thee in song. Flowers awake ye burst into bloom, springtime has come and summer is nigh, sing ye birds oh sing. Sunshine now wakes all the flowers from sleep. Joy giving incense floats on the air, Ah! how my heart beats with rapture a new, as earth’s fairest beauties again meet the view. Oh! How I love to see spring make its’ return. I love to see and smell all the beautiful flowers in bloom, I love to eat all of the delicious fruits and vegetables that are at their peak, especially the melons and berries, and I love to go outside and take in all of the natural beauty that comes only with spring. I can remember as a child playing out in the front yard on a sunny, breezy, spring afternoon and hearing the wind blow through the corn stalks in my father’s garden. I can remember watching my mother hang wet clothes on the clothes line in the back yard, seeing the towels flap back and forth in the wind and sun as they dried, and smelling the Cheer detergent and Downy fabric softener. I can remember cupping my hands over my eyes and looking up at the sky to watch a single airplane putter through the clouds and thinking to myself that God made all of this. Back when I was a little girl in the early 1960’s, people spent a great deal of time outside. People would sit out on their front porches and talk or just sit there quietly enjoying the fresh air. Kids would almost always play outside. We hardly ever sat in our bedrooms and played unless it was raining or we were sick. I can remember my mother helping us spread an old blanket out in the front yard for us to sit on so we could color in our coloring books, play a game, read, or just talk. Sometimes we would just lie back on the blanket, stare up at the sky, and make pictures with the clouds. We played dolls, dress up, school, and Cowboys and Indians. We rode our bikes and trikes, and pulled our wagons a million miles. We Hula Hooped, built forts, and took long walks. We played ball, turned cartwheels, ran races, played hide and seek, played under the water hose,

drew on our Etch-A-Sketches, played board games, cards, and ran through the sprinklers. We as kids had every reason to play outside on a beautiful day in spring. One of my favorite childhood memories of playing outside on a beautiful and sunny spring afternoon was when my sister and I got a brand new Slip ‘N Slide. The Slip “N Slide was a water toy manufactured by Wham-O in 1961. The toy was a long sheet of thin plastic, flanked lengthwise on one side by a sealed tubular fold. The tube could be attached to any ordinary garden hose. Water ran through the tube and out small perforations, spraying onto the sliding surface, which became very slippery and allowed kids to take a running jump onto the plastic and slide the length of the sheet. Boy, did we have fun! We were the envy of all the kids in the neighborhood!!!!! Until….. well….all the bumps and bruises. My sister and I invited all the kids in our neighborhood to come over and try out our new Slip ‘N Slide. The kids lined up and giggled with excitement as they each waited their turn. Well it all went well until everyone got impatient and took running jumps and we all landed on top of each other. I think I came out of that experiment with a busted lip. Before too long there were reports on Television and in the Newspapers where kids had suffered sprains and even broken bones from their Slip ‘N Slides. That is all that it took for my parents to say: “NO MORE SLIP ‘N SLIDE!” My sister and I were not happy with that choice. I remember my Father putting our prize possession water toy in the garbage. Well the next day when my Father was at work and my Mother was inside the house doing something I went straight to the garbage can and retrieved my Slip ‘N Slide. I put it out in the front yard, hooked it up to the water hose, and even went inside the house and got my Mother’s liquid dish soap. I was going to make it all the more interesting. Several of the neighborhood kids saw me doing this and decided to join in the fun. We were having a blast!...... Until my Father came driving up. You have never seen little kids run away so fast! There I was….all by myself, just
me, the bottle of liquid dish soap, a yard full of bubbles, and the Slip “N Slide. Needless to say: after it was all over “I never Slipped “N Slidded Again! I have another favorite memory of Spring and that is when my Granny and Granddaddy Owens would have us over for homemade ice cream. My Grandparents would take a trip to South Carolina every year and return home with watermelons, cantaloupes, and peaches. My Grandmother would cut up a basket of fresh peaches, cover them with sugar, and let them sit overnight to make a heavy syrup. We would all gather in their carport and sit around in folding chairs talking and waiting on our turn to help churn the ice cream. It seemed like it took forever for the ice cream to freeze. Once it was ready, my Grandmother would go in her kitchen and return with the big bowl of peaches and a tin can of Hershey’s Chocolate syrup (There were no plastic bottles back then.) Boy! Now that was good eatin! Every Spring my Mother and Father would fill our yard and the flower pots on our front porch with Petunias, Pansy, and Snapdragons. My sister and I would help water the flowers every day and we waited with excitement to see the first flowers bloom. My Father would always take a picture of my sister and I standing beside our beautiful blooming flower pots. We would pick a few flowers at a time and take them to our teachers for their desks or put a few in a bowl of water for our Mother. It has been many years since I have tasted a bowl of homemade ice cream with Granny’s peaches, stood beside one of my Father’s blooming flower pots, or taken a dive head first on a Slip ‘N Slide, but every Spring when I smell the fresh peaches and I plant pretty new flowers in our flower pots, or I hear a single airplane buzzing through the clouds I smile and think of how God made the Spring time and all of this for us. As for the Slip ‘N Slide… well, I think that I will just forget about that! HAHA!

On Sunday, March 6, South Florida Baptist Hospital sponsored by annual Baby Contest and Diaper Derby. The babies competed head to head in categories like Baldest Head, Chubbiest Cheeks, and Best Themed Diaper.

a. Sophia Martin and Tynsleigh Reese Mintzer faced off in the Diaper Derby contest. Martin won the overall Diaper Derby. The duo posed with 2022 Strawberry Queen Kenley Connell and her court. b. Matilda Pearl Ruane won the Florida Strawberry Festival theme diaper category. Her diaper featured a three dimensional pint of sequin strawberries. She received a trophy, ribbon, and certificate. c. Scarlett Montana Proctor won the 10 to 13 month category for Prettiest Girl. She poses with mom Courtney Proctor. d. Grayson Matthews won the most hair contest. His beautiful brown locks wowed the judges. e. Each parent and contestant circled the stage, letting the audience get a glimpse before stopping in front of the judges’ table. SWINE SHOW
Seventy-eight students participated in the 40th anniversary of the Mosaic Youth Swine Show. In the show, each pig is placed in one of nine classes based on weight. The winner of each class then competes for the title of the grand champion. Jaylynn Wood of Barrington FFA exhibited the grand champion swine at the 2022 Swine Show. Reserve grand champion was awarded to Georgia Kimbrell of Turkey Creek FFA.

Jackson Sturgis’ swine was purchased by Buffy Astin of Astin Farms. Jackson has experience in the show ring with Sheep and Swine. c. WISH FARMS BLUEBERRY U-PICK
Wish Farms welcomed Central Florida residents and visitors to pick fresh Florida blueberries and spend a day at the farm with the entire family! The producer charged $5 per pound with 20% being donated to a local FFA chapter. The event drew families, couples, and friends to partake in the immersive agricultural event.

Pickers were advised to wear clothed toes days, hots, and light layers. e. On February 12, the Plant City Black Heritage Inc. held its annual Gala. The event recognizes the accomplishments of African Americans within the community and recognizes the community leaders who supported the Plant City Black Heritage endeavors throughout the year. The event’s keynote speaker Derrick McBride, a former NFL player, who shared his journey in writing his book One Search For All.The Master of Ceremony for the event was the Les Miller, a former Hillsborough County Commissioner.
