BEST OF THE BEST
This month’s issue celebrates two events that make our community great: small businesses and our beloved Florida Strawberry Festival.
The Florida Strawberry Festival came and went. It’s always an exciting time to spend with the family on the midway, enjoying rides, fair foods, and more. The Festival staff, board of directors, vendors, and volunteers all come together to make the Festival a success is admirable. Recognized as one of the best fairs and festivals in the state and country, we know it’s the people behind the Florida Strawberry Festival that make it the best of the best.
Our editorial team stepped up their coverage thank you to our advertisers who sponsored our social media galleries. Check out a selection of photos and a full Festival In Review and visit our Facebook page to see all of the photo galleries.
At our 22nd Anniversary Party in February, we unveiled the winners of the 2023 FOCUS Magazine Readers’ Choice Awards. It’s an exciting time for the nominees and many are proud to use the RCA nominee or winner logo on their ad for the coming year. This year, we presented more awards than ever before—61 to be exact— including our inaugural Best Chef award won by Rey Gonzalez at Fred’s Market, and the Legacy Award, recognizing businesses that are family owned for more than 50 years. Helen Parke of Parkesdale was at the anniversary party to accept that award (and two others). It means so much to myself, editor Cierra Craft, office manager Candy Owens, and distributor Tony Devane to celebrate our city with these awards. Check out the full list of winners enclosed and be sure to show your patronage to these small businesses.
I want to say thank you to every advertiser and reader who has supported FOCUS Magazine throughout the past 22 years. It means so much to have such loyal readers who share that they can’t wait to read a monthly column or they call excited to see their kids’ pictures inside. Without our customers, we couldn’t continue to bring positive community news to Plant City every month. Now, drumroll please, I am honored to present the winners of the 2023 Readers’ Choice Awards.
Warmest Regards,

Plant City Optimists Host Oratorical Contest Announces 2023 Winners
By Cierra CraftThree local students participated in the annual Plant City Optimist Club Oratorical Contest on Monday, February 20, 2023, at the City of Plant City Parks & Recreation Department administrative conference room.
The theme of this year’s contest was “Discovering the Optimism within Me”. The students presented their four to five-minute orations in front of an audience of nearly 30 people, including their family and guests as well as contest judges, club members, and their families. Students must be under the age of 19 as of last October 1 to qualify for the competition.
“It is difficult for these young people to stand before an audience and give their speeches. The competition helps them improve their public speaking skills which will benefit them in their future careers” said Optimist Club President Pat Stottlemyer.
The results of the 2023 combined gender event are:
1st Place Kenley Connell (Plant City High School)
2nd Place Kyleigh Elliott (Foundation Christian Academy, Valrico)
3rd Place Ellie Mueller (Plant High School, Tampa)
The orators were judged on poise, the content of speech, delivery of presentation, and overall effectiveness by a panel of judges from Plant City Toastmasters.
Connell and Elliott advance from the Club level to the Zone 6 Competition against Lakeland and Winter Haven’s top two finishers on March 27 at the Sadye Gibbs Martin Community Center. The top two from that competition go on to the North Florida District’s Southwest Regional Contest for the Tampa Bay area on April 15.
A Plant City club representative has won the North Florida District finals competition and received the college scholarship nine times since 2001:

• Men’s Program for Recovery
• Men’s Overnight Shelter
• Adult Learning Center (Education) – Lakeland, Ybor City, Tampa
• Lighthouse Xtreme Kids’ Clubs – After School Community Bible Clubs

Using a Pathways of Progress approach, the Lighthouse programs promote Spiritual Growth, Community, Industry, and Education. And recipients thrive by embracing the organization’s core values of Jesus Christ and Biblical Truth, Compassion, Integrity, Accountability, Discipline, Unity, and Teamwork.
Genifer Hall, Director of Thrift Operations, has worked eleven years with the organization. A “labor of love” for this preacher’s kid, ordained minister, and “born and bred Southern-belle,” she enjoys using hospitality at Plant City’s “marketplace for Jesus” to connect, share Christ, and serve the people in our communities. She added, “Like He met the physical and emotional needs and spoke light into the darkness, our Hope Assistance Program does the same.”
Lighthouse Ministries Thrift Store
A GRAND Re-Opening
By Cheryl JohnstonLighthouse Ministries Thrift Store is back and it’s better than ever!
Here shoppers are already discovering quality pre-owned items (and some new) for exceptionally affordable prices in a welllit, well-organized store. In addition, others in need can receive encouragement and assistance with emergency food, clothing, and furnishings through the store’s Hope Center program.
Steve Turbeville, President and CEO of Lighthouse Ministries, shared, “We are so excited to be back serving the Plant City community at our convenient and well-stocked location.”
Now celebrating 46 years of Gospel ministry, the Lakeland-based 501(c)3 non-profit established in 1977 offers multiple outreach efforts. Lives are restored by helping Central Florida men, women, and children get off the streets, find the Lord, and rejoin society. Then Individuals and families can truly experience an overall outcome of God’s peace, purpose, and fulfillment of potential.
Of its 125 employees, 40 were formerly homeless and transitioned into stability though the organization’s recovery programs. Now many are in leadership positions to help run the various operations, which include four
Hall has high praise for the Plant City store’s Lead Assistant- Matt Timmons, Logistics Manager- Nick Cassista, and their teammates. “We all have the same heart for people and for the Gospel. We bathe our locations in prayer daily, coming in and going out, and shoppers comment regularly about the peaceful atmosphere and how the Christian music inspires them.”
Turbeville also announced the Polk County expansion of the ministry’s Lighthouse Extreme Kids Clubs (afterschool Bible clubs) and a new “Life Learning Campus” in Ybor City. His dream is to bring these programs to Plant City in the future.
“We don’t involve government funding,” he explained, “because we want to meet the need of the heart as well. After God paid the $100K mortgage when this original building’s roof fell in, we desired to rebuild a resource for Plant City. Through discipleship and education, our participants learn about faith, finances, and personal responsibility. We also offer English language classes, and our GED program has a 90% success rate.”
He continued, “One vision I have (long after my time) would be to see 250 ‘community beacons’ established. Restoration can work, Friends, through programs such as Xtreme Kids’ Clubs and Rescue/Recovery (Life Learning/emergency shelter with next steps approach). Come see us and you judge. Schedule a tour by visiting lighthousemin.org online or calling 863.687.4076.”
So, Plant City, let’s get involved in changing lives! We can all help Lighthouse Ministries by:
• Donating gently used clothing, accessories, housewares, and furniture
• Hiring individuals to work while they regain dignity and experience a better quality of life.
• Contributing financially
• Sharing the good news by word of mouth or social media
Cinderella: Plant City High School’s Magical Musical Coming in April
By Jennifer JordanOn April 13, 14, and 15, Plant City High School’s Auditorium will be transformed into the hub of a beloved fairytale by many, Cinderella. Families and Plant Citians of all ages are encouraged to see the students of Troupe 1449 perform the 2013 Broadway version of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella at 1 Raider Place.
Starring Madison Parolini as Cinderella (Ella) and Kolby Brittain as Prince Christopher (Topher), the musical will feature props, fog, smoke, and costumes that magically transform on stage. The students, who started rehearsing on January 19, have been working hard on this musical and have built the props, sets, and costumes themselves. The students even learned how to make costumes from a retired costume designer.
With a younger and less experienced group of drama students, Plant City High School Drama Director Audrey Schmidt noted, “We wanted to give our students a challenge but we also wanted to give them something familiar and fun, so we thought Cinderella would be perfect. We also wanted to put on a show that was approachable and would welcome families into the theatre.”
The show starts at 7:00PM on April 13, 14, and 15, with a 1:00PM matinee show on April 15. The show is two and a half hours in duration, with a 15-minute intermission. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door. Prices online are $10 for adults and $8 for students and children. Prices at the door are $12 for adults and $10 for students and children. Children five and under are free. After the matinee show at 3:30PM, there will be a Princess Tea After Party, where royal guests can enjoy tea, face painting, crown making, and photos with the royal family from the Cinderella production. Tickets for the Princess Tea After Party can be purchased for $25, with an accompanying adult ticket costing $5. Tickets for the musical, after party, and further information about Cinderella can be found at www.raidthestage.com. For further questions about the production or about the drama program in general, email raidthestage@ gmail.com. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to witness Troupe 1449 put on the performance of the year and give you a night of fun, magic, and nostalgia with one of your favorite fairytale princesses.
From Johnson Barbeque to “I Do”:
Mel and Jacie Voss’
Local Love Story
By Jennifer JordanDuring covid-19 in 2020, Mel Voss was residing in Illinois, and Jacie Voss was living her life in her hometown, Plant City. After meeting online and hitting it off, they spoke for about one month when Mel wanted to meet Jacie in person, so he came to Florida for a week-long trip. Jacie wanted to have their first date be at a place that was familiar to her, so she chose Johnson Barbeque. Jacie noted about choosing Johnson BBQ as their first date location, “It was a place that felt like home to me. My family eats there at least once a week, if not more. Plus, who doesn’t like barbeque?”
Feeling sparks right away, Mel and Jacie shared many more dates at Johnson Barbeque, and Mel eventually moved from Illinois to be with Jacie. Jacie said about their favorite activities to do together, “We both enjoy watching movies, cooking food, going to church, hiking, singing in our church’s choir, and seeking out new places to explore.”
With their chemistry, love for each other, and similar goals and values, they decided to tie the knot. In January of this year, they made it official and exchanged vows at their church, First Baptist Church Plant City. After getting married, they wanted to re-live the magic of that first date, so
they drove straight to Johnson Barbeque to share their first meal together as husband and wife. Upon pulling up to the drive-thru in their wedding attire, the staff of Johnson Barbeque were shocked and excited, with Jacie noting about their reactions, “All the girls were blushing and the guys were cheering with support. Mel ordered the same food he got on our first date (a burger), and I got a variation of what I had ordered on our first date, some brisket.”
Johnson Barbeque even gave a shout out to the couple on their Facebook page, with the business noting, “We were so shocked when a bride in her wedding gown and a groom in his suit came through our drive-thru. We are truly honored to be a part of so many wonderful memories for Mel and Jacie. We are excited to continue to watch this couple grow over the years and celebrate more milestones with them.”
Thankful for the love and excitement they received from Johnson Barbeque and members of the community, Jacie and Mel are grateful their story has put a smile on so many faces. When asked if they were planning on celebrating more milestones with Johnson Barbeque, Jacie said, “For as long as we both shall live.”
“...they wanted to re-live the magic of that first date, so they drove straight to Johnson Barbeque to share their first meal together as husband and wife.”

Walmart With Me: Samantha Castillo and Lexi Wyatt’s Popular and Growing Instagram Page
By Jennifer JordanSamantha Castillo and Lexi Wyatt aren’t afraid to stay busy and work hard. Samantha is a stay-at-home mom and works from home for DNS Marketing. Lexi is a full-time registered nurse and runs her own Instagram fashion page, @Looksbylex, while also being a mom. When both ladies are not focusing on their own projects, jobs, and children, the born and raised Plant Citians run a popular Instagram page, @walmartwithme_. With over 36,000 followers and counting, Lexi and Samantha use their page to show just how fashionable women’s clothing at Walmart can be by creating various looks, all from Walmart clothing and accessories.
When asked why they decided to create an Instagram page based on Walmart clothing, Samantha stated, “My best friend since middle school started an Amazon Instagram page, and that motivated me to start a page as well. When I started thinking about it, there were so many Amazon and Target pages, but no Walmart pages. One day, I went to lunch with Lexi and I told her I wanted to start a Walmart page. She was excited and interested in creating a page as well, so we left lunch and went to Walmart that same day, and the rest is history.”
Lexi noted about that day, “We browsed the aisles while using our imaginations trying to get creative. Once we saw how many trending items were at Walmart, we came alive and became so inspired.”
Mainly ordering clothing online, Lexi and Samantha will also visit local Walmarts, such as the Plant City and Mulberry locations. Hoping to one day make creating content and running @walmartwithme_ their full-time gig so they can control their schedules and spend more time with their children, Samantha and Lexi make sure to split the content they post, with Lexi stating, “Being organized and planning is key to this running the page. We order most of our items online, and we set a day that we will do reels together once a month and we will record four reels, that way each Sunday we have one to post together. The other days we record at our homes and have set days that we share content with our followers.” Samantha continued by saying, “We honestly love this page and love to inspire and be inspired. The fact that others appreciate what we’re doing is very humbling. We hope to continue to grow our page and we are excited about what the future holds for us both and our page. With so many fashionable looks to share on their page, Lexi Wyatt and Samantha Castillo are proof that Walmart can be a place where you can dress to impress without breaking the bank.
If you would like to see all the looks that Samantha and Lexi have created since their page started in 2019, visit Instagram and follow their page, @walmartwithme_.

The Very Best of the Rawls family, our “Queen” Phyllis Edna Wheeler Rawls (Moma, Nana, Grannie, Auntie, Sister, Cousin, Friend, Prayer Partner) is celebrating her 100th birthday on Saturday, March 18, 2023 at the home of her son Richard Rawls in beautiful Plant City, Florida. The party is hosted by her Children (Richard, Steve, Marilyn and Joey) along with her Grandchildren (13), Great Grandchildren (27) and Great-Great Grandchildren (26).
Phyllis came to America during WWII from her home in England and raised a family of 4 boys and 1 girl here in the USA. While our Papa was serving his country Nana was supporting him steadfastly living the virtues of the Soldier’s Wife. In May of 1954 while in Columbia, SC, Nana officially became a United States Citizen and the Queen of America. While she enjoyed her travels to Alaska, Mass, Washington, South Carolina, Texas and abroad she and Papa settled their family right here in beautiful Plant City, Florida.
A word cloud created from words collected from her family and friends clearly reflects what we have always known about her.
Our queen is Regal, Peaceful, Faithful, Sassy, Patient, Resilient, Thoughtful, Loving and we are all so very grateful for the 100 years that she has been celebrating this wonderful thing we call life.
Her niece Pett in Australia sums it up nicely, “Auntie Phyllis is a loving, giving, and understanding woman who has lived through more that a lifetime of experiences and challenges and remains to be a rock for her family.” The rest of her family could not agree more.
Happiest of Birthdays to you Nana and we can’t wait to plan your 101st!!! With so much Love, Your adoring family!

Highlighting Herstory
For Women’s History Month, we are paying tribute to the women in our community who tell our stories. Through mediums such as the written word, images, and art, women have found ways to capture and express the human condition. Plant City boasts an incredible number of women, past and present, who contribute to exploring and interpreting life in this unique town.
Mary Frances “Panky” Morgan Snow (1927-2020) was one of Plant City’s first newspaperwomen. She attended Plant City High School and Florida State College for Women (now Florida State University). Snow wrote for The Plant City Courier and The Tampa Tribune, from positions as a freelancer to state woman’s editor. Her series, “Reminiscing with Panky Snow”, focused on the stories which chronicled Plant City’s narrative. Snow even had the opportunity to conduct an interview with Eleanor Roosevelt when the former first lady came to Tampa for a meeting of the Women’s League of Women Voters.
Textual descriptions of life in this town were further enhanced with striking snapshots. Gladys
Prevatt Jeffcoat (1925-2012) served as one of Plant City’s leading photographers for nearly 70 years. Her fascination with photography began as a teenager. She convinced Myrtle Young, who ran the Hollywood Studio on Reynolds St., to hire her for $1.00 a week and quickly progressed in her education of the photography business. By 1945, Jeffcoat decided to open her own studio, purchasing Kramer Photo Services from Ray Kramer. Arcade Studio was a success, becoming the first camera shop and Eastman-Kodak dealership in Plant City. Jeffcoat was instrumental in capturing the daily life and noteworthy events of Plant City and providing lasting visual documentation of the town’s growth and history (many of her photographs can be found at the Plant City Photo Archives).
Along with the realism of photographs are abstract renderings which express thoughts and feelings we collectively share concerning the world around us. Ruby C. Williams (1938-2022) was a nationally celebrated self-taught folk artist. She had strong family ties to the Bealsville community, going back to its founding in 1865. Williams served
as an evangelical minister in New Jersey for over 20 years before returning to the Plant City area in the 1980s. She opened a produce stand off State Road 60 in Bealsville and her brightly colored, handpainted signs quickly drew attention. Her creations predominately featured life in Plant City, the times that bring joy, as well as moments of heartbreak. Though her paintings garnered multiple awards and accolades, Williams maintained the importance of the sustenance she farmed from the land of her ancestors; nourishment of both the body and the soul was vital.
We thank the extraordinary women in our town for their contributions in illuminating Plant City’s story. Stop by the Plant City Photo Archives, located at 106 S. Evers St, to discover more. If you would like to share your photos and history, or volunteer with the Archives, please email info@plantcityphotoarchives. org or call the office at 813.754.1578.

BEST STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE, BEST MILKSHAKE AND INAUGURAL LEGACY AWARD
Parkesdale Farm Market
This year, FOCUS recognized eight businesses that have remained familyowned for 50 years or more. The readers chose Parkesdale Farm Market as the inaugural winner.
The legacy that is now known as Parkesdale Farms began when company founder R.E. (Roy) Parke, Jr. emigrated from Northern Ireland to Pennsylvania in 1924 with his family. Roy’s father continued to pursue a vocation in farming after arriving in America with his family. In 1956, the family relocated to Plant City, FL, which was recognized throughout the country as the prime location for growing winter vegetables and strawberries. Thus the first 10 acres of Parkesdale strawberry crops had been planted!
In 1969, Roy’s daughter Cheryl and her husband Jim Meeks opened Parkesdale Farm Market. What began as a small farm market has continued to grow and expand into the largest Strawberry, Citrus, and Produce Market in Florida. In September 2007, Cheryl and Jim’s son, Jim Meeks, and wife Xiomara Meeks, joined the Market to continue Roy’s legacy.
Thousands flock to the Baker Street market each winter for a taste of Florida’s official dessert: Strawberry Shortcake. Made with the Pride of Parkesdale strawberries, a cake-biscuit hybrid, and dairy-free whipped topping, the desserts are not only Plant City’s favorite, but world famous. On a busy day, Parkesdale
Farm Market sells approximately 1,700 strawberry shortcakes and roughly estimates it has sold 4.5 million shortcakes over its 40 years.
Parkesdale’s milkshakes—including the strawberry flavor—are sold year-round. Flavors include strawberry, peach, mango, chocolate, cafe mocha, banana, papaya, vanilla, pineapple, coconut, and piña colada.
Xiomara says Parkesdale milkshakes were named Food Network’s Top Ten desserts
The milkshakes are made with vanilla ice cream and spun, creating chunks of fruit, cookies, etc., depending on the flavor ordered. Parkesdales’ milkshakes bring people from near and far, with some fans online saying they travel hours during the festival season for a Parkesdale strawberry milkshake.
Some of those award-winning desserts have been made for presidential hopefuls, including John McCain, Barack Obama, and the Bush family—George H.W., George W., and Jeb. The market is a popular campaign stop for those seeking to secure the Interstate 4 Corridor and win the politically divided Hillsborough County.
“To see what the farm has become is overwhelming sometimes, I just can’t believe it,” says Helen Parke. “Our family has been blessed.”

THRIVE AFTER 65: Grace Manor at Hunters Creeks wins 2023 RCA for Best Assisted Living
By Cierra CraftThis is just a handful of the residents at Grace Manor at Hunters Creek pictured with Jordan McDonald, Sheryl Vitelli, and Christina DoVale (back). The Assisted Living Community is currently at full capacity.
Choosing to move into assisted living is a major life decision, not only for families but a major transition for the seniors in our lives as well. Often, they are hesitant for a number of reasons: Fear of losing independence, wanting to be in their own home, moving is difficult, finances, and the belief that “only old people live in assisted living.”
For decades, for many Plant City
seniors, it meant moving to Tampa, Brandon, or Lakeland, moving away from the city they have called home.

Winner: 2023 Florida Strawberry Festival
By Cierra CraftFrom March 2nd to March 12th, the 88th annual Florida Strawberry Festival rolled into town celebrating the strawberry harvest, its growers, and the community.
Spotlighting entertainment, agriculture, and our city’s youth, the Florida Strawberry Festival is ranked among the Top 40 Fairs in North America and the Top 100 Fairs in the World. More than 10,000 acres of strawberries are planted each year with nearly 3,000 farms throughout the county. These crops produce an annual value of $360 million.
The 88th Annual Florida Strawberry Festival ended Sunday, March 12 th with record-breaking attendance. The 11-day event drew 606,116 visitors to take part in concerts, livestock shows, free entertainment, rides, food, arts and crafts vendors and more. “From our festival family to yours, thank you,” said Florida Strawberry Festival President Paul Davis. “We would not be where we are today without the community’s continued support. The patrons, the vendors, the concessionaires, the sponsors, the volunteers, the workers, the schools, the churches, the businesses, the staff, the board of directors, the maintenance team, the families, the committees, our friends at Belle City Amusements, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office and Plant City Police Department and everyone in between who has contributed to this moment, we share this accomplishment with you. We are so blessed!”
“This is a huge accomplishment,” said Florida Strawberry Festival President-Elect Kyle Robinson. “The staff and I would like to personally thank our Board of Directors and Associate Directors. They work tirelessly, giving of their time and talents to support our event 365 days of the year. We have some exciting things planned for next year, and we’re already looking forward to BerryFest24. We certainly do have a winner; we knocked this one out of the park!”
Take a look at the Festival happenings as it earns a blue ribbon in the history books.
March 2 OPENING DAY
The fairgrounds were abuzz just before 10 a.m. as vendors put finishing touches on their booths, food vendors prepared to fire up the grill, and at gate one, Festival officials gathered to kick off the 2023 Florida Strawberry Festival. At 10 a.m., Chairman of the Board Phil Waldron gave the all-call through the walkie-talkie to open the gates and have a safe and happy BerryFest 23.
Outgoing Festival President Paul Davis welcomed the first guest to have their ticket scanned at Gate One and the 2023 Queen Kennedie Clinton and her court greeted those entering the gate. A young Festival goer, Creedence Parker, draws a photo for the new Queen and Court every year and presents it to them at gate one. Queen Kennedie thanked Creedence for her drawing and wanted to keep it safe. Creedence, age 7, and her parents Eric and Renee, have made it a tradition to go to the Festival on Opening Day since Creedence was born and she has a photo with the five most recent queens: Ally Burt, Kendall Gaudens, McKenna Jordan, Kenley Connell and 2023 Queen Kennedie Clinton.
“I feel happy, I don’t know what to say to the Queen,” said Creedence. “I want to be a future Strawberry Queen and I learn something from each of them; maybe it’ll help me to be a Queen.”
Renee says these memories at the Festival with her daughter are “priceless.”
“Opening Day is really special for us,” said Renee. “I’m really blessed to homeschool her and be able to spend as much time as I do with her. It’s special to me to watch her to aspire to be the Queen. Creedence loves helping people, serving people and that’s her heart; she loves seeing how the Queen impacts the community and her as she continues to grow.”

By Jennifer JordanPracticing like she’s never won and performing like she’s never lost, Kaylei Harden is a champion both on and off the field. Cheerleading since she was five years old, Kaylei cheered one season with the Tampa Bulls in 2020, but every other season has been with the Plant City Dolphins. Growing up in a family of sports fanatics who have all played on a field at some point in their lives, Kaylei has also played volleyball for Tomlin Middle School and the Plant City YMCA, and plays softball for Plant City Little League. Currently, the 12-year-old is a flyer and a base for her Plant City Dolphins team. Her team then advanced to Globals where they won and became global champions. In July 2022, Kaylei broke her wrist in two places, but that didn’t stop her from doing what she loves. In the 2022-2023 season, her team became local champions and got runner up at both the regional and national level. Kaylei also noted about this season’s local competition, “My team won the high score award for the peewee age level.” In addition to those awards, Kaylei also made the Second Team All American Scholar Athletes for Pop Warner this season at the local level, but she recently found out she advanced to make First Team All American at the regional level. This award is given to students with outstanding scholastic achievement and an excellent grade point average. Hoping to receive a scholarship for any of the sports she plays, Kaylei said about her future, “I want to get my Bachelor’s degree from Florida State University and get into medical school so I can become an anesthesiologist.” Outside of playing sports, Kaylei is a member of the STEM program at Tomlin Middle School and is a member of the youth group at First Baptist Church Plant City, where she attends on Wednesdays. On Sundays, Kaylei volunteers to help watch the three-year-old’s class with her friend, Abby. Giving her best in all areas of her life and setting a good example for her two younger sisters and brother, Kaylei noted, “My mom always says to stay focused and work hard.” With a supportive family, desire to succeed, and willingness to improve, Kaylei Hardin is one who will bring it on.

Girls and boys alike don their jerseys, usually sponsored by local Plant City businesses, and with their cleats laced up tight step out on the diamond with their eye on knocking the ball out of the park. The atmosphere cannot be matched as friends and family gather to support these budding ballplayers, and for some, like board member Jamie Newman, the ball field is like a second home.
“My son is eleven and he started playing when he was three,” shared Newman, “and our friends are our ballpark people. It really does become your family.”
10-year-old Jamel Jones also loves his time on the field.
“It feels great to play with my team,” he remarked, “and to have good coaches that help us
learn more about the game of baseball.”
“I like the camaraderie we have,” added 11-yearold Jackson Pagliaro. “I also like that my coaches don’t put too much pressure on us and we have fun!”
As an organization, Little League has been part of the Plant City community since 1954 and boasts 39 teams this year. The board is excited about the league’s growth and looking to continue building upon past success. Last year, both the Major and Minor All-Star teams won district and went to sectionals.
The league is also working to grow its softball program, which currently serves approximately 100 girls, and seeks to ready them to continue playing ball through high school. Like their baseball counterparts, softball players begin in T-ball and can begin Coach Pitch Softball at age five. Though they did not have All-Stars last season, they hope to have teams in two divisions this year.
The spring season for Little League runs from February to May, and dates for Fall ball are typically posted in June. To request more information, or to become involved with the league, you can email pclittleleagueinfo@gmail.com.
Meet the Maker:
Sue Ella Brogden, Susie B’s Freshies
By Jennifer JordanWith warmer temperatures quickly approaching, odors can smell more pungent in your vehicle, particularly if you leave gym clothes, sneakers, or food in your vehicle for long periods of time. To combat those odors, Sue Ella Brogden creates and sells fun and cute car freshies, which keep your vehicle smelling amazing and fresh. With masculine and feminine designs and scents, Sue Ella’s possibilities with creating freshies are endless. Sue Ella stated about her designs, “I have over 100 different molds and shapes. I had a strawberry water tower replica mold made. I have made some with business logos, favorite sports teams, school mascots, and more.” Carrying 10-12 different scents each season, Sue Ella changes her scents every season to match that time of year, so your vehicle can smell great all year long. Currently, her car freshies scents include strawberry, cactus blossom, butt naked, volcano, mango coconut, leather and lace, strawberry leather, mahogany teakwood, bowties and bourbon, black ice, fierce, cowboy, and strawberry lemonade. Taking about 10 minutes to color and put together, the car freshies take 15 minutes to bake in the oven and 15 minutes to cool. After they have cooled, they get decorated with paint and glitter. Finally, Sue Ella dries them overnight before bagging them. Selling them through word of mouth and to friends, Sue Ella also has a Facebook group for her freshies, Susie B’s Freshies. Selling her freshies for $12, she accepts payments in the form of cash or through Cash App and Venmo. When asked the reason for getting into creating car freshies, Sue Ella said, “My friend Danielle (who graciously helps me paint and glitter the freshies) bought one from a boutique and I kept looking at it and thinking, “I would like to try to make these.” Plus, all I could see in my vision was a big glitter strawberry that smelled like strawberry.” After conducting a lot of research on how to create freshies and joining different Facebook forums, Sue Ella bought a lot of cookie cutters and product and dove in creating them. She noted about creating freshies, “It’s a very quick changing craft. In just two years they have come a long way. I started with metal cookie cutters and have graduated to silicone molds with lots of detail.” Hoping to continue to grow her freshies business and move her operation from her kitchen to her own she shed this year, the born and raised Plant Citian has been married to her high school sweetheart Cole for 24 years. They have a mini farm on 10 acres of family property consisting of cows, chickens, and a baby donkey. Sue Ella noted about the chickens, “All the chickens are named after female country music stars.” Her and Cole have a 21-year-old son, Coleton, two nieces, Hailee and Emma, and are die hard Florida Gators fans. If you would like Sue Ella to create a great smelling and unique car freshie for you, a family member, or a friend, she can be reached at 813-763-1643, or request to join her Facebook group, Susie B’s Freshies.
Leaders in Faith
Pastor Ed Raburn, First Baptist Church Plant City
By Cheryl JohnstonFollowing a 25-year career with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, Ed Raburn now serves as Pastor to College Students and Young Professionals at First Baptist Church Plant City. His goal “is to know Jesus better and to make him known.” And his dream is “for such a movement of God to grip the Plant City area that we see revival like which has never happened.”
The Plant City High School graduate (1994) is married to Christie (Brady) Raburn, the Principal at Strawberry Crest High School, and they have two children Braden, 20, and Addison, 18. Pastor Ed’s degrees include a Bachelor of Science degree from Florida Gulf Coast University and a Master of Divinity degree from Liberty University.
Share a little about your childhood.
I was born in Tampa on October 10, 1975, and lived in Seminole Heights until I was eleven. Then my parents, Buddy and Susan Raburn, purchased land in the Cork area and built the house where they still live. I have two younger siblings, Elizabeth Pierce and Jake Raburn.
Does your wife share in ministry with you?
Christie is absolutely my biggest supporter. Her direct role in this ministry is keeping me sane. I fear I make that harder than necessary at times. As Principal at Strawberry Crest High School, she has her own ministry with daily opportunities to demonstrate the love Jesus commanded in Matthew 22. I’m extremely proud of her. Extremely…
How did you invite Christ into your life?
Growing up in a Christian home, I attended church every Sunday. At age 13, I realized my need to repent and follow Jesus, professed my faith, and became a Christian. In the years following, I walked my own way for a season, but later in life, God gave me a very clear call to pastoral ministry. I volunteered for many years at FBCPC and after my HCSO career, God opened the door for my current role. Thus far, my ministry’s highlight has been to see multiple young adults place their faith in Jesus and make a public profession of that through Baptism.
What do you enjoy most about serving God, the church, and people?
I love seeing young adults understand the scriptural truth that Jesus is the only way to eternal salvation (John 14:6) and then act on that. It’s incredibly satisfying to watch God rescue people, the same way he rescued me. My paraphrase of the great Pastor Charles Spurgeon explains our role: ‘If people are going to hell, let it be with our arms wrapped around them, begging them to turn around.’ I want to pattern my life after German Protestant reformer, Nicolaus Zinzendorf: ‘Preach the gospel, die, be forgotten.’
Any advice for those who’ve not yet come to Christ?
Open the Bible, read the words of the Living God, and discover Truth. Also, seek out trusted Jesus-following friends and ask how He has changed their life. Find a good Bible-believing church and get involved. If none of that works for you, call and let’s go to lunch. I’ll buy!! :-)
And to those who have?
Know the Scriptures. Live the Scriptures. Share Jesus boldly.
Share your thoughts about First Baptist Church Plant City. At FBC Plant City, we want you to experience L.I.F.E. – Love God and others, Invest in the Kingdom, Faithfully share, and Engage in service. We offer multiple services and small groups for every age and life stage. Our childcare, children’s, youth and college/young professionals’ programs are amazing, with engagement opportunities for everyone. Messages are biblical and relevant, and the fellowship is second to none. Come and see!
Candy’s Corner
By Candy OwensWelcome sweet springtime we greet Thee in song. Flowers awake ye burst into bloom, springtime has come and summer is nigh, sing ye birds oh sing. Sunshine now wakes all the flowers from sleep. Joy giving incense floats on the air, Ah! how my heart beats with rapture a new, as earth’s fairest beauties again meet the view.
Oh! How I love to see spring make its’ return. I love to see and smell all the beautiful flowers in bloom, I love to eat all of the delicious fruits and vegetables that are at their peak, especially the melons and berries, and I love to go outside and take in all of the natural beauty that comes only with spring.
I can remember as a child playing out in the front yard on a sunny, breezy, spring afternoon and hearing the wind blow through the corn stalks in my father’s garden. I can remember watching my mother hang wet clothes on the clothes line in the back yard, seeing the towels flap back and forth in the wind and sun as they dried, and smelling the Cheer detergent and Downy fabric softener. I can remember cupping my hands over my eyes and looking up at the sky to watch a single airplane putter through the clouds and thinking to myself that God made all of this.
Back when I was a little girl in the early 1960’s, people spent a great deal of time outside. People would sit out on their front porches and talk or just sit there quietly enjoying the fresh air. Kids would almost always play outside. We hardly ever sat in our bedrooms and played unless it was raining or we were sick. I can remember my mother helping us spread an old blanket out in the front yard for us to sit on so we could color in our coloring books, play a game, read, or just talk. Sometimes we would just lie back on the blanket, stare up at the sky, and make pictures with the clouds. We played dolls, dress up, school, and Cowboys and Indians. We rode our bikes and trikes, and pulled our wagons a million miles. We Hula Hooped, built forts, and took long walks. We played ball,
turned cartwheels, ran races, played hide and seek, played under the water hose, drew on our Etch-A-Sketches, played board games, cards, and ran through the sprinklers. We as kids had every reason to play outside on a beautiful day in spring.
One of my favorite childhood memories of playing outside on a beautiful and sunny spring afternoon was when my sister and I got a brand new Slip ‘N Slide. The Slip “N Slide was a water toy manufactured by Wham-O in 1961. The toy was a long sheet of thin plastic, flanked lengthwise on one side by a sealed tubular fold. The tube could be attached to any ordinary garden hose. Water ran through the tube and out small perforations, spraying onto the sliding surface, which became very slippery and allowed kids to take a running jump onto the plastic and slide the length of the sheet.
Boy, did we have fun! We were the envy of all the kids in the neighborhood!!!!! Until….. well….all the bumps and bruises. My sister and I invited all the kids in our neighborhood to come over and try out our new Slip ‘N Slide. The kids lined up and giggled with excitement as they each waited their turn. Well it all went well until everyone got impatient and took running jumps and we all landed on top of each other. I think I came out of that experiment with a busted lip. Before too long there were reports on Television and in the Newspapers where kids had suffered sprains and even broken bones from their Slip ‘N Slides. That is all that it took for my parents to say: “NO MORE SLIP ‘N SLIDE!” My sister and I were not happy with that choice. I remember my Father putting our prize possession water toy in the garbage. Well the next day when my Father was at work and my Mother was inside the house doing something I went straight to the garbage can and retrieved my Slip ‘N Slide. I put it out in the front yard, hooked it up to the water hose, and even went inside the house and got my Mother’s liquid dish soap. I was going to make it all the more interesting. Several of the neighborhood kids saw me doing this and decided to join in the fun. We were having a
blast!...... Until my Father came driving up. You have never seen little kids run away so fast! There I was….all by myself, just me, the bottle of liquid dish soap, a yard full of bubbles, and the Slip “N Slide. Needless to say: after it was all over “I never Slipped “N Slidded Again!
I have another favorite memory of Spring and that is when my Granny and Granddaddy Owens would have us over for homemade ice cream. My Grandparents would take a trip to South Carolina every year and return home with watermelons, cantaloupes, and peaches. My Grandmother would cut up a basket of fresh peaches, cover them with sugar, and let them sit overnight to make a heavy syrup. We would all gather in their carport and sit around in folding chairs talking and waiting on our turn to help churn the ice cream. It seemed like it took forever for the ice cream to freeze. Once it was ready, my Grandmother would go in her kitchen and return with the big bowl of peaches and a tin can of Hershey’s Chocolate syrup (There were no plastic bottles back then.) Boy! Now that was good eatin!
Every Spring my Mother and Father would fill our yard and the flower pots on our front porch with Petunias, Pansy, and Snapdragons. My sister and I would help water the flowers every day and we waited with excitement to see the first flowers bloom. My Father would always take a picture of my sister and I standing beside our beautiful blooming flower pots. We would pick a few flowers at a time and take them to our teachers for their desks or put a few in a bowl of water for our Mother.
It has been many years since I have tasted a bowl of homemade ice cream with Granny’s peaches, stood beside one of my Father’s blooming flower pots, or taken a dive head first on a Slip ‘N Slide, but every Spring when I smell the fresh peaches and I plant pretty new flowers in our flower pots, or I hear a single airplane buzzing through the clouds I smile and think of how God made the Spring time and all of this for us. As for the Slip ‘N Slide… well, I think that I will just forget about that! HAHA!
