Zane Floyd as a Horse Jockey in 2006 Baby Parade.
The city is abuzz as the Florida Strawberry Festival welcomes 600,000 guests to celebrate our winter crop. FOCUS is proud to present our annual Florida Strawberry Festival issue; let this issue guide what to see, do, and eat at this year’s Festival. We feature an exclusive interview with Queen Annistyn Griffin and her court. The Florida Strawberry Festival has been a slice of Americana since its inception in 1930. It’s popular statewide and nationwide, with guests from all over the country diverging on Plant City. Our festival features a variety of fun agricultural activities for our youth, a parade, eating contests, and beauty pageants. The Florida Strawberry Festival holds sweet memories for many. I think back to when my sons were babies and competed in the Baby Parade. My youngest son, Zy, walked on stilts for his Baby Parade entry in 2011! It was such an awesome experience and one I will never forget. Memories like this are being preserved in the Florida Strawberry Festival History Center. A new exhibit, the history center will encompass memories of agriculture, royalty, entertainment, midway/attraction, and general history. I look forward to visiting the History Center and learning more about our little city’s biggest event. As you dive into this issue, I hope you’ll hold on to old memories and make new ones as you plan your trip to the 2024 Florida Strawberry Festival.

Fred & Tammy Johnson named Grand Marshals of Strawberry Grand Parade
By Cierra Craft
B
erryFine Productions proudly announces the 2024 Grand Marshals for the Florida Strawberry Grand Parade as Fred and Tammy Johnson. In 1988, Fred and his wife, Tammy, opened the first Fred’s Market Restaurant on-site at the State Farmers Market in Plant City. Fred’s parents, Elton and Evelyn Johnson, established a tradition of Southern hospitality and family dining in 1954. Today, Fred’s Market Restaurant continues the tradition of serving food up southern with their sons Owen and Michael Johnson. Their strong emphasis on family heritage, values, and good ole’ southern cuisine has contributed to making each Fred’s Market Restaurant and Johnson Barbeque a place where friends, family, and community can come together and connect, enjoying food cooked slow and served fast. This is why the BerryFine Productions Committee of Gail Lyons, Kyle Robinson, and Mike Sparkman selected Fred and Tammy to help celebrate the city’s values, heritage, and community. Fred and Tammy will lead the 2024 Strawberry Grand Parade on Monday, March 4th, at 1:00 PM. The parade will move north along Evers Street, then west on Reynolds Street, and disburse past the Festival Grounds at the Red Parking Lot.

Christine Miller Throws Hat in the Ring for Hillsborough County Commissioner Seat By Cierra Craft
C
hristine Miller, President and CEO of the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce, has officially announced her intention to run for Hillsborough County Commissioner, District Six this year. Democrat Pat Kemp currently holds the seat. At the time of publication, Republican James Davison and Rico Smith have also filed to enter the race. Democrats Mark Nash and Sean Shaw have also filed to enter the race. In her announcement, Miller said she’s lived in Hillsborough County for three decades and has seen firsthand the changes the county has undergone. “As a local businesswoman and conservative, I know that my neighbors and fellow residents expect their elected leader to produce results, not rhetoric. And that’s exactly why I’m running - to work day and night to deliver results for every corner of our community,” said Miller. In her role as Chamber President, Miller promotes the commercial, industrial, agricultural, and civic interests in the Plant City and East Hillsborough footprint. She is consistently striving to fulfill the mission of promoting economic prosperity through innovative leadership, advocacy, and collaborative community engagement. Miller serves on the Executive Board of the Florida Association of Chamber Professionals (FACP), FACP Advocacy Committee, Student Affairs Development Council for Florida State University, Plant City Economic Development Corporation Board, and Plant City Main Street Board, Ex Officio, is a Leadership Plant City Alumni, a Rotary Club Board Member, and

is the CEO of the Plant City Chamber Foundation. Four State House of Representatives members endorsed Republican Christine Miller for the Hillsborough County Commission. Representatives Lawrence McClure, Traci Koster, Karen Gonzalez Pittman, and Daniel Alvarez all support Miller. “Hillsborough County needs effective, common sense, conservative voices on the County Commission to help make Hillsborough County a world-class destination for economic growth and prosperity. Christine is a results-oriented leader who will focus on the priorities that are important to all residents of Hillsborough County, and I’m excited to endorse her for the County Commission,” Representative McClure said. “I’m proud to stand with Christine Miller and enthusiastically support her for County Commission. Christine is a passionate advocate for her community and will make a real difference in Hillsborough County. I know Christine will focus on improving our infrastructure, protecting taxpayers, and supporting our local businesses,” Representative Daniel Alvarez finished. Christine Miller said of the endorsements, “I’m so humbled to have the support of so many of our conservative state leaders who have been champions for Hillsborough County. I will work day and night to live up to the confidence and trust they’ve placed in our campaign, and I’m excited to work with them to help bring common sense conservative leadership to our county.”

Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections Challenges High School Students to Design ‘I Voted’ Sticker
H
illsborough County, FL - Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections Craig Latimer is challenging students to design a new I Voted’ sticker for Hillsborough County voters. The first-place winning design will be reproduced as a 2” round sticker and given to voters who vote early or drop off their mail ballot during the two weeks leading up to Election Day for 2024 Primary and General Elections. “We held this contest in 2022, and our voters loved getting their specialedition sticker designed by a local high-school student. I know our 2024 winning sticker will be popular, too,” said Supervisor Latimer. Three finalists will be selected, and one will be named the grand prize winner. This year, the contest is sponsored by The Tampa Bay Lightning, The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Busch Gardens. All of the finalists will be recognized at a School Board meeting and receive prizes from the sponsors. Artwork must be two-dimensional, nonpartisan, and original. To read more about the rules and submission requirements, students should visit VoteHillsborough.gov/VHContests. The submission deadline is March 8, 2024. Sophia Hyde is a Life Coach, and She Wants You to Unleash Your Favorite Self By Cierra Craft | Photo by Brandon Hyde
I
n her new book, Unleash Your Favorite Self, author Sophia Hyde wants readers to ditch the status quo and societal standards to achieve happiness. Societal expectations are messages we internalize about what is and what is not acceptable. Unleash Your Favorite Self, and its companion journal, help readers declare their own value system, desires, wants, and pleasures. Hyde draws on real-world experiences of not only herself but also the client transformations through her life coaching business. “The concepts I wanted clients to integrate into their lives were scattered through various books or didn’t exist,” said Hyde. “I wanted to recommend a tool and was more frustrated that the tool didn’t exist.” Hyde said in December 2021, she realized she would have to write the book she wanted for her clients. She met with a publisher and started writing in 2022. She spent 2023 preparing the book for publication and did so just in time for Christmas. “This book is for anyone hungry for change,” said Hyde. “I intentionally wrote it to meet anyone where they are. I’ve worked with men, women, teenagers, retirees, and so it was important to me that this book made everyone feel like they belong at the table.” The book walks readers through the Favorite Life Wheel, which encompasses ten areas of life: Family, Mind, Body, Contribution, Spiritual, Self-Care, Financial, Career, Friendship, and a blank spoke, where readers can add an area of their life that needs improvement, unique to each person. Each chapter of the book breaks down each spoke on the wheel in detail. “The more I worked with clients to help them create significant life changes, the more I uncovered important unaddressed areas. Hence, the Favorite Life Wheel was born.” Hyde said readers should examine their lives in each of the Favorite Life Wheel spokes, question what they want, and ensure the definition aligns with their life and what they want out of it. Reviewers of the book say they felt like a hamster on a wheel, and Unleash Your Favorite Life helped them take a step forward. Others say they appreciate Hyde’s transparent, conversational language and no “one size fits all” approach to self-help. To purchase Unleash Your Favorite Self, visit Amazon.com or www. sophiahyde.com. Sophia will host a Book Signing and Author Meet and Greet on Sunday, February 25, from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Fancy Farms Market at 5204 Drane Field Road, Lakeland, FL 33811. PAGE

or decades, the historic bandshell at Tomlin Middle School was home to woodwinds, percussions, and brass sounds. But the bandshell hasn’t been used since 1994. Thirty years later, Tomlin Principal Matt Johnson is hosting Jazz On the Lawn on February 23 at 6:00 p.m., where music will once again fill the bandshell. The community is invited to bring their lawn chairs to this free event and enjoy the live entertainment provided by Tomlin, Marshall, and Plant City High School bands. “We’re excited to revive this unique venue and would love to make this space a crucial part of the Plant City community again,” said Johnson. Built-in 1953 as part of Plant City High School—later Tomlin Middle School—the bandshell was designed as the school’s band room, with removable doors that could be opened for outdoor concerts. But the doors weren’t constructed, and the outdoor space couldn’t be used as a band room. In 1994, Tomlin held a final concert, “Farewell to the Shell,” as the space would be enclosed. Due to a lack of funds, as reported by the Tampa Tribune in 1997, the plans to enclose the bandshell were postponed. Over the years, the bandshell has fallen to the wayside. Johnson hopes to recapture some of the magic and provide a performing platform for band students. “There has been a renewed effort over the past three years to “revive” the middle school bands in Plant City,” said Bryan Osteen, Band Director at Tomlin. “I am happy to be a part of that effort. I am more pleased that students want to play music again and are happy to be in the band program. I have taught in other school districts before coming to Plant City and I have seen no reason that music programs can not thrive here. Yes, it takes hard work and dedication (to play music), but I think those are traits the community wants to see in its students.” A variety of local food trucks will be on-site. The community is invited to bring lawn chairs and enjoy the evening at the Tomlin Bandshell. Parking is available on Woodrow Wilson Street, and the concert will be held at the bandshell on Woodrow Wilson Street and US-92.

Over 8,000 Participants Expected as Summer Camp Registration Opens at the Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA and YMCA of the Suncoast By Cierra Craft

t’s almost Summer Camp season. Over 8,000 participants are expected at the Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA and YMCA of the Suncoast, with convenient locations throughout the Tampa Bay area. Many camps fill up fast, so the Y encourages early registration. Tampa Y Summer Camp registration opens today for the community. The YMCA of the Suncoast will follow suit on February 26, with exclusive member registration currently in full swing. Both Associations offer various activities for children and teens, from perennial favorites like swimming, sports, and arts to unique options like Horse Camp. Tampa Y camp is geared toward ages 6-15. Participants will experience a fun summer filled with friendships, adventures, and phenomenal memories. Dave Boyle, Executive Director of Tampa Y’s Camp Cristina, oversees our camps and shares that we are expecting over 5,000 campers this year across our 12 family centers. “This camp season, while we continue to cherish the timeless traditions that have always defined us, we are excited to introduce a modern twist to these classic elements. Central to our refreshed approach is a renewed emphasis on fostering meaningful connections.” “Our counselors bring a unique blend of diverse backgrounds and skills, allowing us to offer a personalized experience that caters to every camper’s

individual needs and interests. They serve as role models, demonstrating values and attitudes that leave a lasting impact on the campers, shaping their summer, character, and outlook. Importantly, they create a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment where campers feel comfortable to be themselves, fostering respect and appreciation for others.” At the Suncoast Y, Summer Camp invites youth to be inspired through creative play, sports, and more. It is an opportunity for them to stay engaged socially and academically. Each week features a unique theme with fun activities, encouraging kids to try new things, plenty of physical activity, and games to keep them active. Campers will be able to develop friendships and experience a sense of belonging. “Summer Camp is important for growth. It allows kids to become independent and confident. It also enables them to socialize and make new friends. We expect about 3,000 campers across all four counties, up from about 2,900 last year,” explains Beth Gettig, Vice President of Youth Development at YMCA of the Suncoast. Camp age range varies from Kindergarten to middle school, with a few middle school camps and some Counselor in Training (CIT) programs available for teens. Register soon. Spots fill up quickly at all locations.

People of Plant City
Benji
Padgett By Cheryl Johnston
P
lant City native and talented musician Benji Padgett credits God and his two grandmothers for the gift of music in his life. The two church pianists sparked his interest when he was very young, and he started humming songs at age two. By age five, he was learning to play the piano. Participating in the Children’s Choir at Springhead Baptist Church of Plant City and writing his own songs since his early teens helped to develop that gift further. To date, he’s created almost 40 songs. Fans in our community may remember his win six years ago in the Kelly Clarkson Song Cover Contest, which can still be viewed on YouTube by searching Benji Padgett. Locally, Benji has performed at Krazy Kup and now regularly leads or assists with worship music at The Baptist College Ministry (BCM) at the University of South Florida and with the Young Adults & College group at First Baptist Church of Plant City. His first album, “Dara Seans” (meaning “second chance” in Gaelic), recalled personal emotions and situations from a tough year, 2021. Last month, his second album, “Time to Wake Up,” was released. These pop originals can be downloaded from Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube. Describe a little of your musical journey. I started using songwriting to tell stories and express myself about common human conditions. I believe God has given me this gift, and I’m trying to develop and share it. I look to the Lord for inspiration and don’t believe I’d be doing anything musically now if I hadn’t put my life and trust in His hands. I graduated from Southeastern University in 2021 with a Music Business degree, which has been and will be even more helpful in the future. I love that through music, I can release energy, express my artistry, and be myself. Songs are versatile storytelling and a means to connect with others, which has always been a very important part of my life. Tell us about your work at Fred’s Market Restaurant. I’ve worked at Fred’s for 4 1/2 years, and I’m much more comfortable serving people than when I first started. It’s made me more social, and I’ve learned so much about communication by chatting with friendly customers. It’s great when regulars ask to be seated in my area. Because of Fred’s, I’m no longer afraid of crowds. Can you share a fun fact? Music is my main art form, but I also enjoy calligraphy and have done some wedding artwork in the past. Five years from now, where do you see yourself? I would like to be a full-time musician and/or songwriter. I’m hoping to have a few more projects, especially one that’s a community worship project involving lots of people. I’ll continue auditioning as other opportunities arise, too. What do you enjoy about Plant City? Community and strong friendships are so important to me. My parents, Herb, Heather, brother Jackson, and I are all PCHS graduates. Plant City’s people are wonderful and I’m thankful for my church, music, and Fred’s Market families as well. Altogether, it’s Home Sweet Home!

Did You
Know? Who Put The Plant In Plant City? Writers in Residence Program, Huang History Center Plant City Photo Archives, Inc.

any visitors upon learning that Plant City is the Winter Strawberry Capital of the World incorrectly believe the city’s name celebrates its agricultural roots. In fact, there really is a “Plant” in Plant City. Connecticut-born Henry Bradley Plant was an unusual choice of namesake for a small Southern hamlet in 1885, but his placement of a railway line connecting Hillsborough County to the nation resulted in the rapid development of the city named in his honor. Henry Plant was born in 1819 in Branford, Connecticut. He became a major industrialist of the 1800s, and after making his fortune in the Northeast he turned his eyes to the South. Early on, he saw the potential of the-then very sparsely populated state of Florida and became one of the first entrepreneurs to lead the development of the state. Seeing the difficulties posed in a state with only a very few dirt roads, he had a vision of a railroad transportation system opening the state and proceeded to make it so. He impacted the development of many industries in the state with a system to transport goods to markets and people everywhere. In 1879 Henry Plant began acquiring railroads. Over a period of twenty-years, along with his steamboat line, Plant acquired fourteen railroads and two thousand miles of track. Plant had a vision of his steamboats sailing from a West Florida port to Key West and Havana, Cuba. He needed a port on the Gulf for his railway to operate from Jacksonville to a terminus on the Gulf and then to Key West and Cuba. Cedar Key at the time had the busiest shipping terminal on Florida’s Gulf Coast and Plant decided to build his railroad connecting Jacksonville to Cedar Key. He met with David Levy Yulee, who had built the Florida Transit Railroad from Fernandina Beach to Cedar Key prior to the Civil War. Plant was not successful in obtaining a purchase or partnership agreement leading to Cedar Key and sought a port farther south, looking then to a sleepy village called Tampa. According to this plan his steamboats would travel up the St. Johns River to Sanford then connect his rail line to Tampa and his steamboats would sail from this new port. Acquiring the charter for the Sanford to Tampa rail line, Plant began constructing from both the Sanford end and the Tampa end, where he constructed Port Tampa, completing the tracks by December 1883. This line from Sanford to Tampa traveled through a new town chartered in 1885 as the town of Plant City, named in honor of the railroad magnate who brought the rails to town. Then, in 1898, he took advantage of his railroad’s sole-provider status to become a major contractor to move Army goods and equipment down through North Florida to Port Tampa, where they embarked to fight in Cuba in the Spanish-American War. Plant’s Tampa Bay Hotel became intricately linked with the Spanish-American War and the U. S. Army used

it as a headquarters to plan and execute that War. Henry Plant died in New York City in 1899.His son, Morton, also lived in New York, and after the consolidation of the Plant railway system with the Atlantic Coast Line, he focused his attention on the Northeast. Ironically, Plant had a tenuous relationship with the town named in his honor. There is no evidence of his formally recognizing the place name honor even once when his railcar passed through town on the way west to the Tampa Bay Hotel, which he had constructed to serve the passengers of his railroad, and which is now known as the University of Tampa’s Plant Hall. But Plant’s railway line eventually allowed our winter crop to make its way quickly north and established Plant City with an international reputation for the quality of the fruit of the Strawberry plant. Despite today’s confusion, the city’s forefathers proved to be on the right track with their choice of name for the town. ATTENTION BUSINESS OWNERS! Do not be caught off guard As if you did not already have enough to report, a new reporting requirement has been created by the Federal Government. It is called the Beneficial Ownership Reporting Rule. This rule is the result of congressional legislation titled “Corporate Transparency Act”. The act requires data on all business owners owning 25% or more. It also requires data on individuals who exercise “Substantial Control” over a company. The deadline for this report is January 1, 2025 for entities existing before January 1, 2024. For entities formed in 2024 the deadline to file is within 90 days of formation. Penalties for failure to report is $500.00 per day and/or up to two years in prison. The report is to be filed with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FINCEN) under the U.S. Department of the Treasury. Information about the Reporting Rule is available at www.fincen.gov/boi. Get Educated. Get Engaged. We view this as an egregious burden on small businesses. Contact your tax professional and your congress representative. May the odds be ever in your favor. Good Luck.

A NEW QUEEN REIGNS:
Plant City Lions Club
CROWNS 2024 Strawberry Queen By Cierra Craft
M
iss Annistyn Griffin was crowned 2024 Florida Strawberry Festival Queen from the 17 participants in the Florida Strawberry Festival Queen’s Scholarship Pageant, held January 20. First Maid Miss Taylor Gregory and Court Members Miss Zion Keese, Miss SaraGrace Sparkman, and Miss Abigail Spivey will join Griffin at almost every event throughout the coming year. This year’s emcees were Kelsey Fry Humphrey, 2013 Florida Strawberry Festival Queen and owner of PawBerries Dog Bandanas, and David Lang, owner of Ragalia Gowns in Orlando. The competition was fierce, with a preliminary competition comprising a pre-pageant personal interview, a casual wear competition, and a public speaking competition with a commercial for their sponsor. Contestant #5, Alivia Eben, asked the crowd to clap along during the public speaking portion. To the clapping beat, Eben shared a quick commercial about her sponsor, RAOK Boutique. Abigail Spivey opened her speech for her sponsor, Outback Steakhouse, with an Australian accent.
The third portion of the preliminary competition was the formalwear portion, where each contestant showcased their gowns. Contestant 15, Addison Griffin, and Contestant 11, SaraGrace Sparkman, chose velvet gowns, while Contestant 10, Asia Hodges, chose an all-over gold sequin dress. After a brief intermission, the top 10 contestants were named: Hope Storter, Annistyn Griffin, Milee Hasting, Taylor Gregory, Asia Hodge, SaraGrace Sparkman, Gracie Garner, Abigail Spivey, Addison Griffin, and Zion Keese. These top 10 competitors would continue in the competition, and their scores from the preliminary competition were eliminated; each contestant would start again at zero. The top 10 contestants were held in a secure room. Each was then called to the stage individually to answer an impromptu question: “The Strawberry Queen is known to be well-rounded as she represents an entire community. Share one of your extra-curricular activities or involvements and how it has shaped you into the person you are today?”

SaraGrace Sparkman chose a black velvet gown with silver rhinestone bodice.
Annistyn Griffin was moved to tears as she was named 2024 Strawberry Queen. Her court encouraged her to take her first walk as Queen in front over the cheering crowd.
Milee Hasting spoke about the impact FFA has made on her life, and Gracie Garner said Bright Night, an event she founded to encourage ninth-grade girls in their transition to high school, is a passion project. The top five finalists were named, with Taylor Gregory being named as First Maid. Meaning each of the remaining four finalists had a 25% chance of being named Queen. Emcee David Lang announced, “The contestant who will reign over the 89th Florida Strawberry Festival is contestant 2 Annistyn Faith Griffin.” Griffin was brought to tears, and the crowd cheered for the 2024 Queen. 2023 Queen Kennedie Clinton placed

the sash and crown on Griffin, and the Court told Griffin to take her first walk as Queen. “I’m so honored and ready to give this next year of my life to Plant City,” said Griffin. “I’m looking forward to interacting with every single guest that walks through the Festival gates and leave an impact like they did for me.” Throughout the year, the queen and court make over 80 appearances as they represent the Florida Strawberry Festival and the Plant City community, including parades and events supporting local causes such as the United Food Bank, Plant City Rotary Club, and Relay for Life.
Annistyn Griffin will reign over the 2024 Florida Strawberry Festival. Taylor Gregory (second from the left) will serve as First Maid with court members Zion Keese (far right), SaraGrace Sparkman (second from the right) and Abigail Spivey (far left).
Abigail Spivey was sponsored by Outback Steakhouse and opened her public speaking commercial with an Australian accent. It made Spivey memorable and unique from the field of 17 girls.
Taylor Gregory opted for a green blouse and black pant for the casual wear portion of the competition. PAGE

Annistyn Griffin 2024 Florida Strawberry Festival Queen
First, tell us a little bit about yourself. My name is Annistyn Griffin, but my friends call me Anni. I am currently a junior at Durant High School, and I love being involved in many extracurricular activities. In my spare time, I like taking pictures, hanging out with my friends, and spending time with my Strawberry Festival Show steer, Eeyore. What was your reaction to being named 2024 Strawberry Queen?
coming together for 11 days to celebrate the harvest of the berries is so exciting. Many farmers within my community have been so supportive of me and my fellow exhibitors at the Strawberry Festival, and I look forward to giving back. What do you love most about living in eastern Hillsborough County? I love how everyone knows everybody. I think it’s so special to be able to walk into any store and almost be guaranteed that you’re going to run into somebody you know. Our community has so much love for everyone, and I look forward to spreading that love to others during the festival and during my year of service.
When they called my number, I instantly felt so many emotions. Many of my family members and friends came to support me on the pageant night. I was so grateful to see so many people celebrating with me when my number was called. I am so humbled and honored to have this opportunity to represent Plant City and the Florida My goal as the 2024 Strawberry Strawberry Festival. I have looked up to Festival Queen is to lead by many past queens and court members example within my community since I was a little girl. I hope I can be a role model for younger girls who dream and represent not only the of being in my position one day. Strawberry Festival but also
Who is the person you aspire to be like?
I aspire to be like my twin sister, Addi. She has been my biggest supporter and has cheered me on every step of the way. We have always competed against each other in sports, FFA contests, and even pageants. We have always dreamed of being on the court together. Although that did not Plant City. Of the events you’ve been a part of happen, we enjoyed every moment of thus far, what has been your favorite? the journey. The moments following the pageant have been extra special. I would have to say the Strawberry Festival She has been so supportive and excited for me and Fashion Show has been my favorite event so far. I haven’t the court. I could only aspire to have her loving heart and heard of many towns taking time out of their very busy encouraging soul. days to come and support local shops and celebrate our community. I really enjoyed meeting everyone and taking pictures with the little girls. Aside from a family member, who would you enjoy a dinner date with?
You’re joining a long line of women to hold this title. How does it feel to be a part of Plant City’s history? Having this opportunity to join 88 other women who have held this amazing title is a dream come true. My goal as the 2024 Strawberry Festival Queen is to lead by example within my community and represent not only the Strawberry Festival but also Plant City. It was so heartwarming to have many past queens reach out to me and welcome me into the “Strawberry Sisterhood.” What do you most look forward to in representing the strawberry industry and community? Our community is so special! We live in the Winter Strawberry Capital of the World, and to have the privilege of
I would love to be able to sit down with Cody Johnson and share how his songs have inspired me. One song in particular, “Till You Can’t,” has encouraged me to take chances and chase after my dreams, including going out for Strawberry Queen. In addition to Festival responsibilities, what else does this year hold for you? I am very involved in my school. I’m the Vice President of my class, I manage the social media page for Durant TV Production, and I go to many after-school events to capture memories with my camera for students to keep and look back on. In the fall, I will start my senior year, and I cannot wait to see what other opportunities unfold.

Taylor Gregory 2024 Florida Strawberry Festival First Maid
First, tell us a little bit about yourself. My name is Taylor Gregory, and I’m 17 years old. I’m currently a junior at Seffner Christian Academy and dual-enrolled at Southeastern University. From being very involved in student government to playing three varsity sports, I love being involved at my school. Giving, sharing joy, and telling others about the love of Jesus are very important things that I will make a priority as First Maid this year. In my spare time, I serve in the children’s ministry at First Baptist Church in Dover, play with my rabbit Waffles, and go clay shooting with my dad. How did you prepare for the Strawberry Queen Pageant? I started preparing for the pageant after the first meeting back in October. There is the physical preparation, like getting all the outfits and learning how to walk, but the mental preparation is a side people don’t often see. Through this process, I learned how to be more confident in myself, not compare myself to others, and really believe I can reach my dreams. Most importantly, a lot of prayer went into this, which I truly believe is the most important piece of the puzzle. What concert are you most looking forward to at the Festival this year? I’m so excited for Parker McCollum because my family and I love country music! We often listen to him in the car, and I can’t wait to hear him in person! What do you love most about living in Eastern Hillsborough County?
firsthand every time I drive past a strawberry field on my way to school. I love having a supportive community full of family values. Plant City is far enough away from the city to be the sweetest small town but also close enough to the beach to go on the weekends! Who is the person you aspire to be like? I aspire to be like my mom; she is the most kind and loving woman I know. She has taught me how to work hard, how to put others first, and, most importantly, how to love everyone. I wouldn’t be in this position today without all her encouraging words and support for my dreams. Aside from a family member, who would you enjoy a dinner date with? I would enjoy a dinner out with my role model, Kayleigh McEnany. I would ask her all about how she balances her family and her extremely successful career. She is from right here in Plant City and is an excellent example of how a strong Christian woman should act and carry herself. In addition to festival responsibilities, what else does this year hold for you? 2024 is going to be a very busy time, but I’m so glad I have four new best friends to take on this year with. As First Maid, I want to make this a year of serving others and sharing the joy of Jesus with my community. This summer, I’m planning to spend lots of quality time with family and friends. By the end of this year, I hope to know where I will be attending college, and I’m so excited to see what the future holds!
I love the perfect location of Central Florida. Living here enables me to see Florida’s thriving agricultural industry

Zion Keese 2024 Florida Strawberry Festival Court Member
First, tell us a little bit about yourself. I’m Zion Keese and a senior at Durant High School. I run cross country and track, and I am the secretary of the Black Student Union club. After graduation, I hope to major in elementary education. What concert are you most looking forward to at the Festival this year? Aside from all the good food, I look forward to seeing Kirk Franklin because I remember hearing his songs in church as a little girl. My family is very active in my home church back in Virginia. My mom directed the Youth Praise Team, which sang many of Kirk Franklin’s songs. My grandfather is the pastor of our home church in Virginia. Since moving to Florida, we have attended Love First in Riverview and enjoyed fellowship and Sunday worship. What do you love most about living in Plant City? I love the way Plant City comes together to support one another. Knowing my small town has a huge impact on the farming industry makes me proud to cheer on others in my community. Who is the person you aspire to be like? I aspire to be like my mom. She’s kind-hearted and never judges a book by its cover, and as her daughter, I aspire to be as strong of a woman as she is.
Aside from a family member, who would you enjoy a dinner date with? I would enjoy dinner with middle school girls because I know those years were rough for me. If I had someone encouraging me to wear my natural hair or not care what others think, I would have built my confidence sooner in life. I would love an opportunity to help younger girls see their inner beauty and appreciate their outer beauty. In addition to Festival responsibilities, what else does this year hold for you? This year holds lots of scholarship applications and lasting memories with family and friends before I prepare to leave for college. At the end of my junior year, I told my mom I wanted to go ‘all out.’ I wanted to participate in many activities and try new things. I didn’t want this season of my life to pass with any regrets. I tried new sports, ran for homecoming court, signed up for modeling opportunities, went to every home game in spirit gear, signed up for new clubs, and even ran for leadership positions. I have already done a lot, and the year is only halfway done! I have so many awesome memories! One of my biggest dreams for my senior year was to make the Strawberry Queen Court! I feel like this oncein-a-lifetime opportunity IS my senior year! I don’t have the same excitement for prom, grad bash, and other senior activities. I am ready for the festival and then fast-forward to graduation! I am hoping to attend Florida A&M University in the fall, and I look forward to the connections and new experiences college will offer.
I love the way Plant City comes together to support one another.

Tell us about yourself My name is SaraGrace Sparkman, the daughter of Tom and Katie Sparkman. I am a junior at Plant City High School. I am a three-year varsity cheerleader. I’m on the girls’ flag football team, part of the Raider Buddies club, and Youth Alive club.
everyone. One of my favorite memories is the Special Smiles Day at the Festival. I got to go last year, and it was impactful. I can’t wait to be a part of it again this year on Friday, March 1st. Who is the person you aspire to be like?
Have any relatives been Queen or Court. I am not the first Sparkman to be an FSF court member. My cousins Pamela and Amanda Sparkman were a Florida Strawberry Festival Court members. As a 7th generation Sparkman in Plant City, my family was beyond excited and screaming extremely loud for me when I was announced as the new 2024 Florida Strawberry Festival Court member. My Mimi and Papa (Mike and Diane Sparkman) were so happy that I got on the court and that I didn’t have to put them through this kind of stress again next year. My Papa Mike has been involved with the festival for 35 years, and I’m so excited that I get to leave my mark on the festival like he continues to do. What concert are you most looking forward to at the festival this year? I think I am most excited for Riley Green and Cody Johnson. Music is a big part of my life. I love to have jam sessions, and country music is one of my favorite genres. The Wish Farm Sound stage is the place where I have seen most concerts growing up. It holds a special place in my heart. What do you love most about living in Plant City?
My mom! My mom is so kind and loving to everyone she meets. She has taught me how to be a hard worker and to be the best version of myself. My mom has so much love for everyone and can always make your day better, which is what I hope to do as a Florida Strawberry Festival Court Member. Aside from a family member, who you would like to enjoy a dinner date with? I would love to go on a dinner date with kids from the special needs community. They have such a special place in my heart, have taught me so much, and make me so happy. I have had the pleasure of working with them at many events, and I want to give back to their community because they have given so much to me. In addition to Festival responsibilities, what else does this year hold for you? This year will always have a special place in my heart. This year will be filled with countless memories and four new sisters who I know will always have my back. I can’t wait to represent Plant City. My childhood dream is finally coming true with the best friends a girl could ask for.
One of my favorite things about Plant City is how great the community is, how inclusive we are, and how loving we are to
One of my favorite memories is the
Special Smiles Day at the Festival. I got to go last year, and it was
impactful. I can’t wait to be a part of it again this year on Friday, March 1st.

Abigail Spivey 2024 Florida Strawberry Festival Court Member
First, tell me a little bit about yourself. Hi, I’m Abigail Spivey! I’m a seventeen-year-old junior, and I attend Plant City High School. I’m also dually enrolled in Hillsborough Community College. My passion is cheerleading, and I’m on the Plant City Varsity cheer team and was on the competition team last year. At school, I’m involved in multiple clubs and organizations like the National FFA Organization, Special Olympics, Raider Buddies, National Honor Society, American Sign Language Honor Society, and many more! Have any relatives been Queen or court? No. My mom and my aunt were in the Queen’s pageant when they were my age, but unfortunately, they didn’t make it to the court. I’m the first one on both sides of my family to make it to the Queen’s court! What concert are you most looking forward to at the Festival this year? I have many concerts I’m excited to see! I’ve always loved country music, so of course, I can’t wait to see Cody Johnson, Riley Green, and Parker McCollum. But I absolutely cannot wait to watch Flo Rida and the Black Eyed Peas and jam out with my best friends next to me! What do you love most about living in Plant City? It would have to be the representation of agriculture and local farmers. My dad is a third-generation strawberry farmer.
Everywhere I go, I see businesses honoring the hard work of farmers like my dad. I hope to honor the importance of agriculture and the berry while being on the court the same way I’ve watched my hometown do it for years. Who is the person you aspire to be in life? I aspire most to be like my mom. My mom set an example from a young age of what a strong, loving, independent woman looks like. She taught me respect, compassion, and determination. She made an impact on everyone around her and could light up any room she walked into. I owe everything to her and would not be here right now if it wasn’t for her. I hope to be like her one day. Aside from a family member, who would you enjoy a dinner date with? Well, I always love a good dinner with all my best friends. Yes, we aren’t blood-related, but the connections I have with them make us feel like family. My girls are the people I could tell anything to and can make me laugh even when I feel like I can’t. In addition to Festival responsibilities, what else does this year hold for you? Throughout this year, I want to be the best representation of my family I can possibly be. I want to bring joy and love to the festival. I want to be remembered by Plant City as an empathetic individual who would do anything for her community.
I hope to honor the importance of agriculture and the berry while
being on the court the same way I’ve
watched my hometown do it for years.

Through the Decades: 89 Years of Sweet Memories By Cierra Craft
The Florida Strawberry Festival rolls out the red carpet each spring to welcome guests from across the state, country, and world to taste those world-famous strawberries. Throughout the festival’s 89 years of history, a lot has changed: From penny voting for the Queen to celebrity appearances. At the Plant City Lions Club’s July 5, 1929 luncheon, Lions President Albert Schneider suggested the Lions’ first major project as an annual fair in celebration of the strawberry harvest in Plant City and the surrounding satellite communities. As a result, a committee and a festival association were formed. Mr. Schneider was elected President, W.D. Marley was named vice president, Henry H. Huff was named secretary, and Henry S. Moody was named treasurer. James W. Henderson, F.E. Cummins, and Marcus Cone were named directors. At the time, President Schneider predicted the Strawberry Festival would be “one of the largest winter fairs in the Southeast.” His prediction came to fruition as the Florida Strawberry Festival welcomed more than 600,000 guests in 2023. Turn back the pages of the history book at the moments that have shaped the Festival and memories in the locals’ hearts. See more festival memories at the all-new Florida Strawberry Festival History Center and Strawberry Queen Exhibit in the historic Milton E. Hull Armory Building in the southeast corner of the festival grounds. The History Center will take guests through the past 89 years of everything that makes the Florida Strawberry Festival great.

A tradition since the early years, Baby Parade contestants were showcased on “mini floats,” but in the 30s, the contestants were pulled through the city streets. In 1935, Bobby Helms was on the Future Farmers of Plant City float. The float featured a small house and a mailbox that read “U.S. Mail Route 2.” Photo courtesy of PCPA.
In 1958, a beautiful, shiny, brand-new Rambler four-door automobile, courtesy of Smith Motors, was up for raffle. The fundraiser was sponsored by the American Legion, who donated the proceeds to charity. The car raffle is similar to the present-day Stingray Chevrolet Corvette Raffle, which benefits Unity in the Community. Photo courtesy of PCPA.
In the 1950s, the Grand Parade marched down Haines Street (present-day MLK Jr Blvd). This music-themed float reads City of Tampa across the front. The outlying communities would enter floats in the Strawberry Parade to celebrate the harvest.

RISING STAR Saige
Starford By Victoria Shawgo
“I
love everything about swimming. Swimming has been my whole life.”
Following in the strokes of her dad, Saige Starford has spent her whole life in the water. Her love for swimming turned into a competitive pursuit at the age of nine, and she has been pushing herself to achieve one goal after another ever since. “I always focus on becoming better than I am,” she shared, “whether that be in swim, as a friend, or as a student. I’m always looking for ways to improve my technique and my time, and that’s what motivates me.” A Senior in the IB Program at Strawberry Crest High School, Starford swims every day but Sunday, sometimes twice a day. “It’s definitely challenging, especially being in the IB Program,” she admitted. “I’ve had to learn a lot of time management. I always prioritize school, swimming, and church, and then if there’s time, I hang out with my friends.” Starford is the captain of the Strawberry Crest Swim & Dive Team and swims with the Blue Wave club team. This season, she placed 9th in the state in the 50 Freestyle and broke two school records in the 50 Freestyle and 100 Freestyle at both Districts and Regionals. She was also recently honored to be the recipient of the Henry Hicks Memorial Award for Outstanding Female Swimmer of the Year in Hillsborough County.
PAGE

Starford began the season with the goal of breaking the record for the 100 Freestyle but surprised even herself when she broke the 50 Freestyle first. “I had not dropped time in the 50 Yard Freestyle in two years,” she explained. “I had been working so hard in trying to get a faster time, so when I dropped a second, I was so happy.” Following that event, she went into the 100 Freestyle with confidence and envisioned herself breaking the record. When she reached the wall, she saw that she had again dropped a second and had broken two records at the same meet. She repeated the performance at Regionals, demonstrating the consistency her hard work and training had produced. Currently, she is going through the process of applying for West Point, where she hopes to study Kinesiology or Biology while also continuing to swim competitively. Ultimately, she aspires to become a doctor. “Saige is the kind of person that always puts everything into it,” shared her mother, Brenda Starford. “She may not always get the time that she wants. She may not always get the grade that she wants. But what she does do is persevere. She just has that mindset of grit and determination.” This mindset will serve her well as she pursues the opportunity to “Be all she can be” at West Point and beyond.

included multiple county competitions, Districts, Regionals, States, and Nationals. “Prior to state, we won our district competition,” Mesquita shared. “Of all 28 high schools in Hillsborough County, we came in first, and we also won our 5th regional championship this year.” On the heels of those successes, the team entered this year’s FHSAA State Championship with energy and confidence. Their particular division does not include tumbling, so their routines are made up of jumps, a cheer, and multiple stunts. “We do five partner stunt elements and six pyramid elements,” Mesquita explained. “So, they’re stunting non-stop for two and a half minutes.”
The team’s family atmosphere extends beyond the blood relation of its coaches to encompass the girls on the team, as well as the legacy of Plant City natives who have cheered before them over the years.

n Saturday, February 3rd, 2024, Plant City Cheer brought home their second State Championship title. After a near miss last year, the team went into this season with renewed determination to recapture the top spot in the 2A Medium Non-tumbling Division. “From day one, they’ve had such an incredible energy, work ethic, and passion for getting back to the top,” coach Skotti Snapp Mesquita shared. Coach Mesquita leads the team alongside her mother, Karen Snapp, and her sister, Sara Kate Snapp, making Plant City Cheer a family affair. The coaching staff also includes Cala Callins, who leads the JV team, and Jasmine Griffin, the team’s athletic trainer.

The team’s family atmosphere extends beyond the blood relation of its coaches to encompass the girls on the team, as well as the legacy of Plant City natives who have cheered before them over the years. “When I started coaching five years ago, I didn’t really understand how special Plant City is,” admitted Mesquita. “It is such a tradition here in town and has such a legacy, family feel. It’s really special because we often get girls coming in as freshmen who have wanted to cheer with us since they were little because of family members who have cheered before them.” Tryouts for the team were held in June, but the official competition season began in October and
Though this year’s team was made up entirely of veterans, Captains Larkin Baxter and Chloe Shinneman, along with Co-Captains Emma Jones and Raylynn Thompson, stood out for their leadership during the season. “The captains were phenomenal leaders this year,” remarked Mesquita. “They’ve been with the program since freshman year and really understand the team’s culture and standards.” In addition to the regular coaching staff, Jen Graffice was brought on this season to help the team develop a competition-ready mindset. “This year, we hired a mindset coach that came in and did a mindset camp for us,” Mesquita explained. “We felt that last year, some of our issues that cost us success at the end of the season were mental rather than physical. Jen has helped the girls so much with their growth mindset, mental resilience, and confidence.” This commitment to both the physical and mental aspects of being competition ready paid huge dividends for the squad, enabling them to approach the State Championship boldly and meet their goal of bringing the title back to their school and their hometown.

Durant High School
Cheerleaders By Victoria Shawgo
D
urant High School Cheer has been state runner-up in their division two of the last four years at the FHSAA State Championship, but this year they were determined to finish the season at the top. “The girls this year were really just prepared and ready to make history for Durant Cheer,” shared Head Coach Nikki Hand. “We were so close last year to finally getting that State title that as soon as the season was done, the girls were driven. Their goal was to win State.” Hand has coached at Durant for the last decade and is incredibly proud of her squad’s work ethic in making this season their best yet. She is assisted by fellow coaches and Durant alums Liv Erker, Savanna Kolanowski, and Kinleigh Doiron. “We’ve always been a strong program,” she

remarked, “but my coaching staff and I have really poured our heart and soul into these girls to prepare them to get to where they are now.” The team’s unofficial motto, penned by one of their members, is “Hungry, but Humble.” They knew they would have to work extra hard this year, in and out of practice, to achieve their goal. Captains Dakota LaPointe, Makenna Gerena, and Kendall Delgado were especially instrumental in leading the team to success. All three girls began cheering on the varsity competition team as freshmen and have grown with the program over the last four years. Though the competition is highly physical, the mental aspect of preparing for the competitive atmosphere is also very important. “Our biggest thing is that we were able to
get the routine taught, and we just ran full outs at practice over and over again,” explained Hand. “We set up a T.V. and would watch the routines and then discuss positives and negatives of each performance. We always told them to keep going to the last eight count, even in practice, so they would be prepared if they made a mistake in competition.” Their consistency in practice prepared them well for their moment on the mat at State, and ultimately, they walked away as the 2024 FHSAA 2A Small Non-tumbling State Champs, bringing home the first-ever state title for DHS Cheerleading and also the first state title in the last thirteen years for Durant in any sport. Congratulations, Cougars! May this be the first of many.

“Almost every season, we have had a Strawberry Crest team that has hit some kind of marker or made history in some way or another... So the next team that comes along tries to outshine the previous year because they want to be known as the best SC team the program has ever had.”

ver the last decade, Strawberry Crest Cheer has developed a legacy of excellence that has resulted in ten consecutive State Championship titles in Class 2A Small Co-ed Tumbling at the FHSAA State Championships. In addition to a decade-long run as State Champs, the highly competitive team has consistently ranked in the top four at the National Competition, capturing the National title in 2020. “This season was different because we were going for our 10th consecutive State title,” shared head coach Loveny Savarino, “but it was also a rebuilding year for us because we lost eight seniors from the previous year and had two not return. So, ten of the twenty kids we met were brand new to our program.” Savarino has coached for twenty-two years, eleven of which have been spent building the program at Strawberry Crest. Her steadfast leadership has been integral in the team’s unfailing success.
PAGE
128
“Throughout the years, we’ve worked on a team culture and consistency,” she explained. “I feel like every team has understood where the bar is as far as what the team before them accomplished and wanting to come in and outdo them.” The team practices in the Strawberry Crest gym, surrounded by banners bearing the names of their predecessors. These visual reminders help them remember the legacy they’re representing while also motivating them to set the standard for those who will come behind them. “Almost every season, we have had a Strawberry Crest team that has hit some kind of marker or made history in some way or another,” remarked Savarino. “So the next team that comes along tries to outshine the previous year because they want to be known as the best SC team the program has ever had.” Though this season was a challenge, the veteran members came together to help bond the team and teach the culture and expectations
to the newer members. While all the returning members displayed excellent leadership, one special cheerleader stood out. Sienna Smith provided a unique perspective for her teammates because she is the only member of the team who has competed in, and won, the state competition all four years of her high school career. “I’m very proud of them because we had our most difficult routine on the floor,” said Savarino. “We practiced hard and long, and we all knew as a team, to bring home the tenth consecutive state title, we had to make up a lot of ground and train hard and quick.” “Every year, it gets more difficult,” she continued. “Cheerleading is an evolving sport; every year, the rules change, the skills get more difficult, and the expectation gets higher. It’s fun trying to outdo yourself from the year before. This team accepted that challenge, and they achieved their goal of bringing home the decade win.” Though the team brought home their prize, their quest doesn’t end there. This is a streak that no one wants to break, and year eleven is now in their sights. “We’re very excited for next season,” confirmed Savarino. “I feel like we had a lot of growing pains this year, so we’re just excited for next season to get started.” With consistency in coaching and a culture of excellence, there is no doubt that Crest will continue rising to the challenge.

“Let’s create the most beautiful version of you.”
T
his is the tagline Plant City native and former Strawberry Court Member Lindsey English uses to capture the heart of her business. Formerly employed in the corporate world, in 2022, English took a leap of faith and left her job to attend cosmetology school. She was licensed in 2023 and has since been using her talents not only to inspire confidence in her clients but also to share beauty and creativity around our town. Currently serving as a stylist and salon manager at Nostalgia Salon & Boutique, English specializes in transformation appointments, which gives her the opportunity to work closely with her clients to attain the color, cut, or style that best reflects their personality. She is also a soughtafter hair and makeup artist who prepares her clients to look confident and glamorous on the occasions that are most important to them. Though she loves her work at the salon, hair and makeup are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to her creative flair. English’s flexible schedule has allowed her the opportunity to explore other pursuits as well. “I’ve always had the creative eye,” she shared. “I’ve always been into crafting and painting signs, and being able to control my own schedule has really given me the freedom to expand on all of that.” English’s work can be seen all around town, on the windows of businesses like V.E.V Fitness and Sweet Roots Apparel. She uses her skills to create beautiful window paintings that bring a pop of joy to the visage of each business that employs her. In addition to her window painting, she also designs custom cowboy hats (#lidsbylinds) and, under the banner of “McClain Customs,” recently released her first pair of Strawberry Wranglers fashioned in celebration of the upcoming Strawberry Festival. “My goal is really to make custom creations for people [and businesses] that allow them to express who they really are and help them stand out in a different way,” English explained. From locks to lids and everything in between, Lindsey English can style you from head to toe, helping you express yourself in a fun and fashionable way. Leaders in
Faith
Jeremiah Dixon By Cheryl Johnston
N
ine-year-old Jeremiah Dixon takes his faith in God seriously and believes in putting that faith into action. The owner and CEO of his recently established Jeremiah’s Lemonade business is working to earn as much money as possible to help those in need. The young entrepreneur uses the funds he earns from selling $5.00 jugs of lemonade to buy bread, peanut butter, and jelly. He makes sandwiches with those supplies to give to the homeless and hungry. He also likes to add oranges, cookies, Vienna sausages, water, and other valuable personal hygiene items to the care sacks. And now he’s introduced two new flavors of lemonade to sell – peach and strawberry. These flavored lemonades are priced at $6.00 each. The budding philanthropist explained, “My goal is to help serve the underprivileged and spread LOVE – helping the homeless ‘One cup at a time” with amazing lemonade to one day provide housing.” Jeremiah attends school at Lincoln Magnet Elementary and church at St. Luke’s Missionary Baptist. The third grader is a talented musician who plays the piano and violin at school and the piano at church. He creates some of his own tunes as well. For physical activity, Jeremiah has enjoyed participating with the YMCA Swim Team since age five and typically places first in the freestyle event during most competitions. It’s obvious to anyone observing Jeremiah’s joyful attitude in doing the business he enjoys, that he’s loved by many. His helpful family includes his mother, Ratasha Williams, and grandmother Karen Williams. His grandmother said, “This was his own idea, and I’m so proud of him. He’s grateful to God for how we’ve been blessed and wants to share God’s love by doing for others.” It all began when Jeremiah saw a homeless man who obviously needed something to eat. He decided he could sell lemonade to earn money to help people in situations like that. “I am so happy and thankful to be able to help others,” Jeremiah said. “It feels good.” This past Christmas, Jeremiah and his family packed 100 backpacks with blankets, hats, gloves, raincoats, and personal items to distribute to the homeless. Two frequent stops include the Rowena Mays Park (corner of Alexander and Baker streets) in Plant City and near Coney’s Funeral Home off Memorial Boulevard in Lakeland. To learn more about his business or read his nightly devotions, visit his social media pages on Facebook (Jeremiahs Lemonade) and Instagram (mrjeremiahd). Candy’s Corner By Candy Owens
S
isters are special from young ones to old. God gave me a sister named Karen who is more precious than gold. We have shared many secrets and the same mom and dad. We have shared lots of good times and held on through the bad. Our memories we cherish with love that has no end. I am glad she is my sister and I am glad she is my friend. It is hard to believe that on February the 10th my sister, my “Sissy”, my “Kay-Kay” will turn 64 years old. My sister is almost 3 years older than I am so I pretty much grew up thinking that her word was the gospel. In fact, I look back now and laugh at some of the things that I feel victim to because she was older and I thought that she could do no wrong. HA! HA! When we were little girls Karen and I would sit under a tree in our front yard with spoons, old metal pie pans, the water hose, and make mud pies and mud cakes. We would have so much fun just laughing and making a mess that Karen would get me to eat a spoon full of mud. She would tell me how good it tasted and that she ate mud all the time with her friend Tammy Napier, so as usual, I took a big bite and swallowed. I remember the mud smelled good but sure did not taste good. Before I knew it, Karen ran in the house and told our mother that I was out in the front yard eating dirt. She just loved to get me in trouble. There were so many times over the years that I fell hook line and sinker for what she said. I remember back in the mid 1960’s our parents took us to see the new movie Mary Poppins with Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. We were so captivated by the music, the costumes, the dancing, and the fact that Mary Poppins could fly that our mother surprised us with the record album. We would have her play that record over and over in our living room so we could twirl around with our umbrellas in our hands while singing: Super-Cali-FragiList, A Spoonful of Sugar, and Chim Chim Cheree. We probably played the music right off the grooves of that record. Well, that is all that it took for the wheels to start turning in my sister’s head or should I say for the Devil Horns to start sprouting. My sister whispered in my ear: “I know how to make you fly! come outside with me and I will show you how!” I grabbed my umbrella and outside we went. Karen instructed me to climb up to the top of the iron trellis on the front porch with my umbrella open and jump just like Mary Poppins. So, I took my umbrella in hand and started climbing the trellis. Our mother just happened to be watching us through the living room window and ran to the front door and asked us what we were doing. I told her that “Kay-Kay” told me that I could fly just like Mary Poppins if I

jumped off the roof with my “Magic Umbrella”. Needless to say, our mother put a stop to that ideal real quick. Probably one of the times that I was the most gullible was back about 1967 when I was between the age of 4 and 5 years old. Our neighbors Darin and Linton Williams invited all the neighborhood kids to come to their house and eat watermelon. Well, at that age I ate the
yummy watermelon, but I also swallowed the seeds. I guess that I was too young to pick out the seeds, so down the hatch they went. My sister keep looking over at me telling me that I was supposed to spit the seeds out, but I just kept on eating those seeds. On the walk back to our house my sister told me that I had better not drink any water or a watermelon would grow in my stomach if I watered the seeds just like “Jack and the Beanstalk”. I thought about what Karen said to me all day long. When supper time came I would not drink my milk. I was so thirsty that I started to cry. My mother asked me what was
wrong and I replied: “I’m Thirsty!” and she told me to drink my milk. I told her that I could not have anything to drink because I had eaten watermelon seeds at Darin and Linton’s house that afternoon, and that a watermelon would grow in my stomach if I watered the seeds just like “Jack and the Beanstalk”. It did not take too long for my parents to figure out where that idea came from. Through the years my sister and I have played many jokes on each other. The last really good prank was a few years ago when she and her sons Tony and Nicholas invited my over to their house to eat my favorite food: Chicken and Dumplings. I should have known that there was trouble from the start because my nephew Nicholas told me to sit right down at the table and that he would serve me. I thought to myself that this was certainly a special treat because Nicholas was serving me first. My sister told me to dig in and my nephews followed with a big: “How do they taste? Are they good?” I took a bite and remarked: “These are delicious!” and then I took another bite and then another bite and then another bite, then “wait a minute! What is that?” I looked down at my bowl of delicious “Chicken and Dumplings” and there was a real life chicken foot sticking up just like it was waving at me! I looked at the chicken foot with disbelief and then I looked at my sister and nephews and they just rolled on the ground with laughter. My sister told me that people served Chicken and Dumplings with all the parts and especially the feet back in the good old days. I think that I turned three shades of green with that prank. To this day, I do not have a love for Chicken and Dumplings like I did in the past. I can laugh until I cry when I look back at all of the funny things that my sister and I did as children. I can also look back and cry with happiness and gratitude when I think of all the times that my sister has been right by my side through good times and through bad times. My sister Karen has been the most wonderful friend, teacher, cheerleader, advisor, prayer partner, and example of how to conduct myself through life’s challenges throughout my entire life. I could not have been blessed with a better sister and I love her with every ounce of my being. When I was a little girl I would snuggle up with my “Sissy” on a rainy day and she would read me stories from our “Humpty-Dumpty” or “Jack and Jill” magazines. That was the most comfortable and secure feeling in all the world, and I hope that she knows that to this day, every time that she is near, I feel that special way. Happy 64TH Birthday “Sissy”! I love you.
