THE RESULTS ARE IN

FOCUS is excited to announce the winners of the 2024 Readers’ Choice Awards! There are repeat winners and a few new appearances. Throughout this issue, you’ll notice many winners expressing appreciation for this recognition. Find your new favorite spot for a haircut, where to take the family for dinner, or which home service pro to call when you’re in a pinch. These businesses have been recognized by you, your family and friends, and neighbors as being the best in their industry.

To the winners, this issue celebrates you and the teams who work hard to contribute to the local economy through your small business and make our community whole. Congratulations to all of the winners!

Another Florida Strawberry Festival has rolled through town. The Festival announced on March 14 that a new attendance record had been set, with more than 630,000 entering the gates. That’s two consecutive years of breaking attendance records. Maybe we can break the record again in 2025. Be sure to check out our complete coverage of this year’s Strawberry Festival with our Festival in Review feature. From concerts to agriculture, this year’s event was sure to be remembered.

The front cover features one RCA winner and former Strawberry Queen. Hannah Benton and her mom, Brigitte Hodge, owners of RAOK Boutique, sat down with editor Cierra Craft. The pair reflect on the early days of their small business as they celebrate their 10th anniversary. Brigitte also shares an uplifting message from Ephesians 4:32 for readers. We hope you enjoy this inspiring story and shop at RAOK for your apparel and gift needs.

With gratitude and hope,

PLANT CITY PERSONALITIES!

CAN YOU GUESS WHO THIS IS?

COME, LET’S MIX WHERE ROCKEFELLERS WALK WITH STICKS OR UMBRELLAS IN THEIR MITTS. PUTTIN ON THE RITZ!

This little cutie pie was a hit in the strawberry festival baby parade way back in the 1960’s. He grew up in plant city and was very popular in school and around town. He was a star football player for the raiders back in his day. He was quite the dude just like this photo. He is still very loved and has too many friends to count. I can’t give out anymore clues. If his personality doesn’t get you, then those gorgeous eyes and smile will!

Any ideas???

David Huver People of Plant City

David Huver calls Plant City his winter home. He describes it as “homey, open, and natural—a great small town where walking is safe.” He’s thankful especially for the sunshine, warm weather, and the Florida Strawberry Festival.

His first Festival trip this year included a ZZ Top concert, Bourbon Chicken, Fiske Fries, and an Amish Donut. He plans to return for other shows, rides, games, and exhibit browsing.

Born in Traverse City, Michigan, on 02-04-02, on his parents’ seventh wedding anniversary, the youngest of Jim and Evie Huver’s three sons is preparing for a Business Administration degree at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan. Since his brothers Joe and Sam have married, Joe’s two little daughters have made David a 22-years-young uncle. Of his brothers, David said, “Even with them picking on me, having two older brothers gave me built-in friends and played into my character development. No matter how far apart we live now, we will always be willing to help each other.”

In his leisure time, he enjoys working out, watching ESPN or playing sports, and watching YouTube podcasts by Joe Rogan and Jordan Peterson, as well as Crash Course videos. He relaxes by playing piano (by ear; downtown Traverse City has an outdoor piano for anyone to play besides the one he has at home), playing Call of Duty or Grand Theft Auto video games with friends, and reading interesting articles.

You are from a close-knit family. What’s something you admire about your parents?

My dad’s work ethic is incredible. He is so motivated and thorough. No matter the circumstance, if he sees something needing to be done, he does it right away. Mom’s integrity is above reproach. She is honest and fair, and she thinks deeply. We have great and interesting conversations because she’s an avid reader and information junkie who retains everything she learns.

You’re obviously in great shape, so describe how you maintain that level of fitness.

I usually work out three times a week at Planet Fitness, and I drink mostly water. I try to eat clean and healthy (but I allow for food exceptions when I’m at the Florida Strawberry Festival here and the Cherry Festival in Traverse City).

Are those two Festivals similar?

Plant City’s Strawberry Festival is larger than the National Cherry Festival – it has more of everything because it covers so much space. From the midway to the concert choices, there’s plenty to do and experience. Regarding the Cherry Festival in early July, everyone loves the Blue Angels air shows over the crowds and the East and West Bay of Lake Michigan. It feels very patriotic and makes us proud to be American.

Tell us about your passion for sports and the teams you follow.

Growing up, I enjoyed bowling and playing soccer, basketball, football, and baseball. I root most often for Boston’s teams – the Celtics, Red Sox, and Patriots (and maybe the Bruins if they’re in a championship game.) The Ferris football team won back-to-back Division II football championships in 2021 and 2022, so that was exciting.

Which college classes are favorites?

I enjoy English Literature and words in general, and for business, I like Marketing, Management, and Macro/Micro Economics classes, largely because the professor made those very interesting and insightful. I did a brief internship with a financial advisor, which helped me learn about how companies operate. Ultimately, I hope to own a business that provides services and become part of the organizational culture.

Know? Did You

It Started in a Box Part I: “The Early Years – 2000-2005

Plant City Photo Archives’ 25th Anniversary is coming up. The Photo Archives was a lingering concept that unexpectedly sprang to life in June of 2000. It started in a box, or actually eight boxes in a hallway in the renovated Lee Building in historic downtown Plant City.

Sailing friends Ed Verner and Gil Gott frequently discussed the importance of preseving local history. Verner was the President of the East Hillsborough Historical Society; Gott was on the Board of Directors. Both knew Bill Friend, “Plant City’s unofficial photographer”, and were stunned by Friend’s death on August 29, 1999. Verner began to insure Friend’s large collection of local photographs was conserved from the “dust pile of history.”

At a meeting of the East Hillsborough Historical Society, Verner proposed acquiring the Friend Collection. The Society’s policy, however, was to accept approved donated artifacts but not to purchase them. After failing to locate any historical organization to fund this acquisition, Verner and Mrs. Friend agreed to the purchase of the bulk of Bill Friend’s photographic collection of over 40 years, with Mrs.Friend selecting photographs for her personal disposition. The photos were to be donated to a non-profit entity, if there was a local organization ready, willing, and able to accept the large preservation project. There was none.

In June 2000, eight boxes of the Friend Collection, containing over 20,000 prints and negatives, were stacked in a hallway of the Lee Building. Verner, beaming from the salvation of the historic collection, was now met with the “giant question – What Now?” After meeting with attorney Robert Trinkle, Verner established a new not-for-profit corporation for the preservation of the collection of photographs.

Verner and Gott reviewed the boxes, discussing the new organization and what was to be its mission and objectives. This was a challenge since this was a unique operation and samples of what needed to be done and how were not available.

Ensconced in borrowed office space in the Lee Building, the team began taking inventory, researching photographic preservation procedures, and all those other things they had no idea about. Joining the team, Betty Patton began a task that she would perform for the next twenty years – scanning/digitizing and more – aided by her son, David Patton, with expertise in computers, scanners, and procedures. The team was evolving.

They borrowed equipment, or sprung for used or clearance furniture. They traveled to American Association of State and Local History conferences for information and contacts. In 2001 they made their first sale, a selection of historic photos for the new City Hall. By 2002 Ed and Gil took their program on the civic club circuit, speaking to the clubs and any group that offered an audience, relaying the story of the eight boxes and their importance to the preservation of Plant City’s history and heritage.

They formed an Advisory Council incorporating more than twenty citizens in the promotion of the fledging Photo Archives. They printed a

brochure and mailed their first solicitation of funds. The Courier carried a front-page story featuring team members and their preservation project. Going into 2003 the Plant City Photo Archives was firmly established.

With the help of Stanley and Susan Kolker, Linda and Jodi Smith, the Photo Archives held its first “Evening of Picture-Perfect Memories,” at HCC’s Plant City Campus in June 2003. Despite the challenges of the weather the soiree was a fundraising and promotional success.

In November 2003, the City of Plant City Historic Resources Board presented its first preservation award to the Photo Archives for its Education and Preservation projects. Through its outreach efforts, the Photo Archives collaborated with the Improvement League and the Arts Council in promoting public events. The second “Evening of PicturePerfect Memories” was held in the Spring of 2004 and the Photo Archives presented its first Heritage Award to David E. Bailey, Jr., the city’s recognized historian.

By 2005 the Photo Archives was now totaling over 40,000 images scanned and preserved. To pay tribute to the veterans of World War II with an exhibit, they began collecting hundreds of photographs. Over five hundred hung in the exhibit at the Red Rose Convention Center in 2005. Plans were now in place to move to a larger office and exhibit space.

The Photo Archives seeks and welcomes new members and continues to accept generous and much needed donations.

BEST HAMBURGER & BREAKFAST

Brick House Cafe

Located in Plant City’s old jail, Brick House Cafe offers homestyle cuisine in downtown Plant City. It’s not uncommon to see a line of families, colleagues, and blue-collar workers lined up out the door for a hot breakfast or a hearty burger at lunch.

Enjoy pancakes, French toast, waffles, or omelets generously stuffed with delicious ingredients, or enjoy a one-egg or two-egg breakfast with all the fixings. Brick House Cafe serves dishes found at no other Plant City restaurant, including Southern Fried

Grits (served Saturday and Sundays only) or Churro Stuffed French Toast.

“I’m fairly new to Plant City. This place was an awesome selection. Their food is excellent, service is 5-star, and they have an all-around great environment. The churro french toast is off the chat. I’ll be back!” said one customer.

Whether it’s a simple hamburger, a sumptuous bacon cheeseburger, or the appetite-busting

206 S Evers St, Plant City, FL 33563 / (813) 752-8546

monster double cheeseburger, patrons rave over the Brick House’s fresh handmade patties and perfectly grilled buns. It’s no surprise Brick House has been named Plant City’s best hamburger for ten years.

“On my first visit, I had a bacon cheese burger with fries and a sweet tea. The burger was thick and juicy, and the real bacon was piled high. It was almost too big to eat! The fries are crispy but melt in your mouth…” said another customer.

BEST SALAD ABC Pizza

ABC Pizza was up against some tough competition in the Best Salad category. But ABC Pizza has one salad to rule them all: the restaurant’s iconic Greek Salad. This salad is, as the menu says, “a meal in itself.” The Greek Salad starts with a big bed of shredded lettuce, topped with chopped tomatoes, generous amounts of feta cheese and ham strips, Greek peppers, Greek olives, and the restaurant’s house dressing. For an extra flavor, add a scoop of Greek potato salad.

With 158 Google reviews specifically about the Greek Salad, the dish is right up there with pizza as one of the restaurant’s top entrees. One customer said, “Really good! The Greek salad and dressing is worth the drive alone.” Another added, “They’re Greek salad with potato salad, which is fantastic. I’ve never tasted this kind of potato salad before, but it is so good... you got to try it. It gives the Greek salad an extra special taste.”

BEST CUBAN Strawberry Hut

If you’ve never sunk your teeth into a Cuban sandwich from Strawberry Hut, you’re missing out. The sixteen-time award-winning sandwiches are truly something to behold—stacked high with Smoked ham, deli ham, mojo pork, salami, swiss cheese, mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato, and pickle. Six days a week, the 300-square-foot walk-up eatery is busy serving madeto-order sandwiches, soups, salads, real-fruit strawberry milkshakes, and year-round strawberry shortcake.

Longtime Plant City residents Troy and Betty Wilson never cut quality. They purchase fresh produce from the farmer’s market and have fresh bread delivered daily from La Segunda Bakery. Their success, with God’s help, prompted them to open a second Strawberry Hut in early 2015—a 3,400-square-foot, air-conditioned restaurant in Lakeland. They credit our local community for their 31 years in business. Betty explained, “We’re grateful that Plant City has been so good to us. Our customers feel like family.”

Duke’s Brewhouse

When you’re dining at Duke’s Brewhouse, there are only three things that matter: Wings. Sports. Spirits.

At Duke’s, customers can have chicken wings their way and choose between traditional or boneless.

Flavors like Kickin’ Korean, Sweet Heat, and Garlic Parmesan are some of the over 20 wing sauces available. Dry Rub options are Old Bay, Duke’s Blackened, Mango Habanero, Memphis BBQ, and Lemon Pepper.

“Delicious wings, wonderful drinks, and a live band, what more could you ask for!” said one customer. Another added, “They have great bone-in wings with a wide variety of sauce flavors. The staff is very attentive and provides a great atmosphere!”

Duke’s Brewhouse Plant City General Manager Chris Stovall said, “It feels great to be recognized for something we take pride in. Putting your name on something is one thing; being the best is another.”

Duke’s Brewhouse’s chef James Londberg was named Plant City’s best chef.

“It was definitely a blessing, and I felt so loved that everyone voted for me going up against the competition and other chefs,” said Londberg.

Londberg has worked at Duke’s Brewhouse for seven years, first as a front-of-house manager, but his passion was in the kitchen.

“I’ve been cooking since I was 16,” said Londberg. “I have always had a passion for cooking. Growing up, my family was in the restaurant business, so I saw the joy that people get out of good food and wanted to make people happy. I know that’s where I could be of service.”

Londberg takes pride in being an employee of Duke’s and crafting each meal but has a deep passion for the city. He said he is in the kitchen every day to ensure it is running smoothly and that Duke’s customers are satisfied with every plate served. 2212

Fred’s MarketTable serves fried chicken,

meatloaf, fried catfish, and all the fixins, just like Southern families have been eating for generations.

hospitality and is proud to win Best Overall Service. The team offers quick service and always ensures that guests feel like they’re at home.

“How can I say ‘thank you’ enough to our staff for their dedication and to our guests who keep coming back,” said General Manager Judy Connell.

Brenda Doerr was named the Best Server in Plant City and began working for the Johnson family in 1982 at the former Buddy Freddy’s. Doerr exhibits a can-do attitude, cheerful deposition, and a warm smile, making guests feel welcome. Olde Town has a casual, upbeat vibe for hungry diners to gather around the table for something delicious. Olde Town offers thin crust and deep-dish pizzas, crisp salads, and hearty pasta entrees, such as Spaghetti & Meatballs, Chicken Parmesan, and Baked Ziti.

The restaurant’s thin-crust pizzas are cut into squares rather than triangles and come in sizes small, medium, large, and extra large. Flavors like Chicken Bacon Ranch, BLT, and Blue Buffalo, these pies are beyond the traditional pizza flavors. Most pizzas can be ordered Deep Dish as well, and at Olde Town, they put the cheese underneath the sauce, like a Chicago Deep Dish-style.

Olde Town customer, Alice, said: “We tried the thin crust and the deep dish to see which we liked better, but both were amazing! The thin-crust meatball parmigiana had lots of cheese and great flavor. The deep dish supreme was cheesy with lots of chunky sauce on top. The crust was very flavorful as well. Coming from NY, we struggle to find good pizza in FL, but this is the spot! We’ll definitely be back.”

BEST STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE & MILKSHAKE

Parkesdale Farm Market

Thousands flock to Parkesdale Farm Market each winter for a taste of Florida’s official dessert: Strawberry Shortcake. Made with the Pride of Parkesdale strawberries, a cake-biscuit hybrid, and dairy-free whipped topping, the dessert is not only Plant City’s favorite but also world-famous. On a busy day, Parkesdale Farm Market sells approximately 1,700 strawberry shortcakes and roughly estimates it has sold 4.5 million shortcakes over its 40 years.

Parkesdale owners Jim Meeks and his wife, Xiomara, say Parkesdale milkshakes were named

Food Network’s Top Ten desserts and named FOCUS Magazines’ Best Milkshake year after year. The milkshakes are made with vanilla ice cream and spun, creating chunks of fruit, cookies, etc., depending on the flavor ordered. Parkesdales’ milkshakes bring people from near and far, with some fans online saying they travel hours during the festival season for a Parkesdale strawberry milkshake.

These milkshakes and shortcakes have been made for presidential hopefuls, including John McCain, Barack Obama, and the Bush family—George

H.W., George W., and Jeb. The market is a popular campaign stop for those seeking to secure the Interstate 4 Corridor and win the politically divided Hillsborough County.

“To see what the farm has become is overwhelming sometimes; I just can’t believe it,” says Parke family matriarch Helen Parke. “Our family has been blessed.”

LEGACY AWARD

Felton’s Market

In yet another close race, Felton’s Meat & Produce was named the winner of the 2024 Legacy Award. Family-owned companies, regardless of industry, with 50+ years in business, are nominated.

In 1955, Felton Williams opened a roadside fruit and vegetable stand off Highway 92 with his wife, Lucille, as the bookkeeper. Throughout the following 27 years, Felton opened multiple stores, sold those businesses, bought them back, and sold them again. His passion for the grocery business remained, and in the 1980s, he opened Felton’s on Maryland

Avenue, offering not only traditional groceries but also international foods and a full-service meat market.

With age, as his health declined, the business was carried on by two of his three children: Lee Williams and Karen Davis. Lee was instrumental in the success of the store and its concentration on custom meats and international selections. Lee and Karen continued the legacy of their father with great customer service, providing quality meats and produce and contributing to the community in a

philanthropic and charitable way. Upon Lee’s passing in 2021, Karen and her daughter, Kayla, now own and manage Felton’s, continuing to meet the grocery needs of its customers with a wide selection of produce, meats, dry goods and more.

“We were so excited to receive the Legacy award at the FOCUS Readers’ Choice Awards last month!” said Karen and Kayla Davis. “It’s been such an honor to be part of this community for the last 69 years and to serve you every day. Thank you to all who voted!”

SWINE SHOW

Opening Day of the 89th Florida Strawberry Festival kicked off the first of seven livestock shows with the Youth Swine Show. Exhibitors from FFA, 4H and FYLA entered the show ring to have their market swine judged, hoping to place top of their class. Seventy three swine were sold at the Festival, with no exhibitor making less than $10 per pound.

a. Exhibitors from FFA, 4H, and FYLA work tirelessly for months to raise and care for their livestock before show day. The swines are then sold during the Festival’s swine sale, putting money in the pockets for the exhibitors for their college or career plans.

b. Caroline Newman (right) appeared to be the youngest exhibitor in the swine Class 5. This was her first year showing a swine and it weighted in at 249 pounds.

c. Exhibitors use a show pig wipe to help control their swine and give the judge an unobstructed view of their hog. The judge looked at each swine from all angles, picked her top five, and then narrowed down the top of each class. Tucker Thomas’s swine was named first in class.

d. Tyler Fry competed in class 5 with his pig. The swine show was held on opening day of the Festival, as one of the seven livestock shows held on the grounds. Others include steer, lamb, and dairy cows.

STEER SHOW

On Wednesday, March 6, 120 young exhibitors stepped into the show ring for the 2024 Mosaic Youth Steer Show at the Florida Strawberry Festival. Steers ranged from 933 pounds to 1440 pounds, divided into three divisions and twelve classes. These steers were then sold at the Steer Sale on Saturday, March 9. Funds made from their livestock projects often fund these local students in their college and career plans.

ea. Steer Exhibitors line up and let the judge ask questions and take a closer look at each livestock animal. The exhibitors then walk their steers around the show ring to give the judge a look at the animal’s gait and shape. These exhibitors have put months of work into raising the best possible cattle.

b. The show ring teaches young exhibitors perseverance, competition, and mental toughness, among many other skills. This steer was awarded fifth in Division 1 Class 1 by Levi Sampson.

c. Durant FFA’s Kayla Hanson leads her steer, named Vader, through the ring. Hanson and Vader were named the first in class for Division 2 Class 5.

d. Jarrett Willis was one of the youngest exhibitors in Division 2 Class 5, competing against high school exhibitors. Willis’ steer weighted 1175 pounds and was named second best in class after Kayla Hanson from Durant FFA’s 1157 lb steer.

e. Division 1 Class 2 exhibitor Kiah Swilley was named not only the top of her class, but at the end of the night was named overall Reserve Grand Champion.

RISING STAR Davis Jaida

Ranked 11th in her class, Plant City High School Senior Jaida Davis is truly the hallmark of a well-rounded individual. As a former First Maid, Davis loves volunteering with the local Strawberry Festival. She plays basketball and tennis, is active in FFA, and serves as President of three different school organizations (Girls Interact, Youth Alive, and National Honors Society).

Davis’ love for basketball began at an early age. Like many little girls, she spent her earliest years learning dance and gymnastics, but at the age of 7, she decided to try something new and began playing co-ed basketball at the local YMCA. She discovered she loved the game and continued playing at the YMCA for the rest of her elementary years.

“Playing co-ed was a blessing in disguise for me,” shared Davis. I learned so much, and it was really cool being able to grow up playing with guys and then branching out to just girls.”

After her years playing at the Y, she moved on to playing with the city, which then led to her joining a travel ball team. She also played all three years at Tomlin Middle School and was drafted to the Varsity team during her freshman year at Plant City High.

In addition to her basketball court time, Davis also shows off her tennis skills.

“I started playing tennis just for fun,” she admitted. “I never expected it to be something I loved so much, but it’s such a fun sport that I can see myself continuing to play recreationally.”

She and her friends decided together to learn tennis at the Walden Lake tennis courts under the tutelage of Rhett Rollyson. When tryouts rolled around their sophomore year, they went out together, and all of them made the team.

Her accolades don’t end with her athletic achievements, though. Davis is also active in the school’s FFA chapter and competes with a partner in the Ornamental Horticulture Demonstrations. The duo won second place in the state last year, demonstrating their dried flower arrangements, and hopes to take first place in the upcoming competition.

After graduation, Davis will be attending Santa Fe Community College, where she is just five classes away from obtaining her Associate’s Degree. She then plans to transfer to the University of Florida, where she will pursue a degree in Digital Advertising.

Plant City High School Raiders Basketball Team

After a close game against Winter Haven High School in the Regional Finals, Plant City High’s Raiders Basketball team finished their season 22-7. Though Winter Haven came out on top with a score of 71-59, the season marked one of the best the Raiders had played since their last Elite 8 appearance in 2008. This was a notable feat since the team graduated about 80% of their top scorers at the close of last season.

“It was a lot of inexperience, but people stepped up, and we had a good year this year,” remarked Raiders’ Head Coach, Billy Teeden.

Although the season went well, whether the team would advance to Regionals was initially unclear.

“We were a little nervous because we lost in the district semi-finals,” explained Teeden, “so we weren’t sure we’d make Regionals.”

“When we made it,” he continued, “it gave us a little spark, and we used that momentum going into the playoffs and were able to win a couple of the regional games and get to the Regional Final.”

In his coaching, Teeden focuses on the culture of the team and their bonding, telling them to prioritize heart over the hustle and reminding them they can only “control the controllables.” He also makes sure everyone gets an opportunity to play, mixing players in and out to give them the chance to develop their skills in different positions.

“I feel like this team really did a good job of coming together and playing for each other,” he shared.

Gavin Tinsley, a Junior who led the team in scoring, was among several upperclassmen who helped bring the team together. Tinsley made the Western Conference 1st Team and was recently recognized as a Top 25 Player in Hillsborough

County by the Tampa Bay Basketball Coaches Association.

Joining Tinsley, Leroy Lucas, who is a Senior point guard, was also named a Hillsborough County Top 25 Player and made the Western Conference 2nd Team.

Also of note are Seniors Michael Ball and Malachi Morris. Ball finished this season as a fouryear starter and will leave as a Raider with 81 total wins, while Morris was key in the team’s success as a defensive stopper.

With a successful season in the rearview mirror, Coach Teeden is now looking forward to what next year may hold.

“The ultimate goal is to make it to the State Final 4,” he shared, “but my hope is that we make great memories and enjoy the high school experience to the fullest.”

Meet the Maker:

Tiffany Dunkin

It all started with a simple teacher appreciation gift. Tiffany Dunkin, a local Plant City resident and mom of two, had her eye on some cute bracelets that were made to look like pencils. Unfortunately, when she logged on to Etsy to order them, she experienced a bit of sticker shock. Rather than give up on her gift, she decided to procure the materials and make the bracelets herself. The bracelets were a hit, and what started as a one-time gig has grown over the last year into a successful business called Dunkin Designs.

“I started my business for fun,” shared Dunkin. “I have always enjoyed crafting, and basically love anything I can do with my hands and small materials. I originally started with just jewelry, but I’ve since added pens, wristlets, car charms, and key chains.”

Dunkin offers both pre-made and custom items. Though she sells primarily through social media, she is beginning to attend vendor events as well. Most recently, she set up shop at Plant City Little League’s Opening Day, where, in addition to her ready-made wares, she also offered a custom bead bar.

“I packed up everything I use for my products and put it on the table so people could come and design their own item,” she explained. “They would pick out the beads they wanted, and I would ask if they had a particular way they wanted it. If not, I put it together in the way that I would.”

The event was a success, and she hopes to be able to attend other local markets, like Main Street’s Last Friday Downtown, in the future.

Though the advent of her business was a bit unexpected, she is grateful for what it has become.

“It’s really something that I’m proud for my kids to watch me do,” she shared. “I want them to see that not every job means you go to work every day and that you can make something of your own and be proud of it.”

With a wide variety of jewelry, keychains, and charms that can be themed to fit any occasion, Dunkin Designs offers a one-stop shop for beautiful, personalized trinkets that will bring a smile to the face of anyone who receives them. Visit Dunkin Designs on Facebook to see the current offerings, or reach out to Tiffany at dunkindesigns@gmail. com to design your own custom creation.

Leaders in Faith

Grant & Naomi Fowler

Grant and Naomi Fowler pastor a relatively new congregation in Plant City at Ekklesia Revived. Originally established as a study group in their living room, the church now rents space from Calvary Fellowship Assembly for their Sunday services at 6:00 p.m. at 1110 North Gordon Street.

Raised in Plant City, Grant graduated from PCHS in 1994 and continued his education at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. With degrees in Christian Ministry (2017) and Master of Divinity (2021), he’s enrolled now in the doctoral program.

At age five, Grant felt a yearning and realized he was a sinner. His mother called the Associate Pastor at Springhead Baptist, who came to their home and prayed with Grant as he invited Christ into his heart. At age nine, he became aware of the call on his life to preach. He wrestled with this calling until 2015 when the Lord used Philippians 1:6 to encourage his surrender to preaching and full-time ministry.

Born in Plymouth, England, Naomi immigrated with her family to America because her dad was transferred to the British Royal Navy. Her education includes degrees from Virginia Tech (2002), Johns Hopkins University (2004), and Barry University (2015). The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist is currently Chief of the OBGYN Anesthesia Department at Lakeland Regional Hospital. Naomi asked Christ into her life after a Virginia Tech roommate invited her to a Bible study. While reading “Experiencing God,” she became aware of her need, prayed, and asked Jesus to save her soul. She offered, “My journey with Christ hasn’t been easy, as I honestly didn’t understand discipleship until the age of 31 and truly surrendered my life to Jesus Christ as Lord.”

Together, they love family time with their three children – Isabella, Brayden, and Nathan – playing golf and enjoying their seven dogs: a Labrador Retriever and six Yorkies. To connect with the church’s youth and young adults, Grant also plays video games. They appreciate Plant City’s people, location, and raising children in a city that “feels like we live in a Hallmark movie.”

What led you to establish Ekklesia Revived?

Our new church plant was birthed out of weekly meetings in our Springhead home and officially launched to the Plant City community on September 10, 2023. I felt grieved for the state of the Church at large and the many small struggling churches. God placed a strong vision in my heart to revitalize His people by equipping them, through effective discipleship, to share their testimony and love of Christ with friends and family. The Lord surrounded me with a team, each person uniquely gifted in areas of worship, youth, children’s ministry, and serving as Elders. While at seminary, the call to church plant became clear as God spoke through one professor who said I was

not a revitalization Pastor but a church planter. In Colossians 3:17 and 23, the Lord spoke to me of the vision for Ekklesia Revived. This call was confirmed by two additional Pastors. With many churches stopping their Sunday evening services, Ekklesia Revived was born.

Since we are commanded to “go and make disciples,” we ask folks, ‘When is the last time you led someone to Christ or shared your faith?’ No one should become complacent, so we try to equip believers to share testimonies, to read and understand the Bible, and to see God’s promises come alive in their lives.

What do you enjoy about sharing Christ?

Grant: Seeing the Lord Jesus change people’s lives! We’ve seen children transformed, drug addicts changed, homeless folks revitalized, and Christians on fire for sharing the Gospel. Jesus placed within us a desire only He can fill, and following Him, our hope eternal, is the best decision one will ever make.

Naomi: Jesus is my hope, Savior, and rescuer. I’m a survivor of childhood neglect, abuse, and trauma, as well as breast cancer diagnosed at age 28. Jesus used Matthew 11:28 to draw me near in dark, dark days. My story tells the goodness of God and His faithfulness through struggles. Jesus can offer the same hope to everyone. With nothing to lose and everything to gain. why not begin your relationship with Him today?

Yeah the name of the dance is Peppermint Twist (Bop shoo-op, a bop bop shoo-op)

Well you like it like this, the Peppermint Twist

It goes round and round, up and down Round and round, up and down Round and round and up and down

And a one two three kick, one two three jump

It’s alright, all night, it’s alright

“Hey Chicks and Cats, wanna do The Madison, The Monkey, The Dog, The Mashed Potato, The Twist or The Frug?”

“Let’s Beat Feet and Blow the doors off that Choice lookin’ Woody Wagon!”

“Hey, I’m going over to Skippy’s house to get some Gutt Waddin.”

If this all sounds kinda strange to you, here’s what we’re gonna do: Let’s take a “Lookie-Loo” back to that great year, 1962!

President John F. Kennedy was in the White House. The population of the United States was 185,771,000 people, The national debt was 302.9 billion, unemployment was at 6.7 % (up 1.2% from 1961), life expectancy was 70 years, and the middle-class American family income was $6,000, which was up $300 from 1961. Johnny Carson took over as the host of NBC’s Tonight Show, Wal-Mart opened its first store in Rogers, Arkansas, and Andy Williams sang: Moon River and took home a Grammy. The Academy Award went to West Side Story, and The United States Navy commissioned the first SEAL.

A gallon of gas was 25 cents, a first-class stamp was 4 cents, a movie ticket was 50 cents, a candy bar was 5 cents, a new car was $2,500, a newspaper was 10 cents, and a doctor’s office visit was $5.

Favorite TV shows were: The Andy Griffith Show, The Jack Parr Show, McHale’s Navy, Bachelor Father, Tell it to Groucho, and The Beverly Hillbillies.

Some famous births in 1962 were: Clint Black, Garth Brooks, Jon Bon Jovi, Tom Cruise, Jerry Rice, Evander Holyfield, Demi Moore, Jodi Foster, and the author of this article…Me!

I decided it might be fun to call a few of my friends around town and ask them: “Where and what were you back in 1962?”

Sharon Moody, Plant City’s 2016 Citizen of the year, President of The Black Heritage Celebration, Past President of Plant City Kiwanis Club, Board Member

of Unity in the Community, and voted as one of Plant City’s Women of Distinction, was a six-year-old in Sadye Gibbs Martin’s first grade class at Lincoln Elementary School. She remembers walking to town with her grandmother to buy fish at Harrell’s Fish Market on Palmer Street.

Marion Smith, President of the Plant City Chamber of Commerce, was a five-year-old kindergartener at St. Peter’s Episcopal, who got in trouble for bringing a knife to school just because she wanted to.

Plant City Police Chief Ed Duncan was a sevenyear-old attending Cahoun Elementary in Sulphur Springs and remembers students having practice drills at school to “Duck and Cover,” which involved crouching under desks and covering their heads in defense of a a surprise nuclear attack. Chief Duncan also remembers the school asking students to bring empty bleach bottles to store water in case of war, so they would have water to drink, bathe, and brush their teeth.

Mr. James “Sonny” Jones, retired Principal of Tomlin Jr. High School and Plant City High School, had just accepted the position of Assistant Principal of Plant City High School where he stayed for five years until he was offered the job of Principal of Tomlin Jr. High School.

Mike Sparkman, Founder/President/CEO of Sparky’s Oil Company, City Commissioner, Former Mayor of Plant City, Citizen of the Year, Director and Past President of the Florida Strawberry Festival, was in his Senior year at Plant City High School, and worked four jobs: He and his brother David owned and operated a full service gas station on Palmer Street; he drove a kerosene truck; was on duty seven nights a week from midnight to 7:00 a.m. for the Plant City Fire Department; and drove an ambulance for Haynes Funeral Home. WOW!!

Paul Davis, General Manager of the Florida Strawberry Festival, was a seven-year-old in second grade at Seminole Heights Elementary School in Tampa, who was anxiously awaiting his family’s move to Plant City so he could be a third grader at Cork Elementary. (Note to self: Paul Davis first tried to say that he wasn’t even born yet in 1962 - hahaha!!).

Pec Chambers McGinnes, lifetime resident of Plant City, former Strawberry Queen’s Court Member, wife of Festival Director Dub McGinnes, and grandmother of 2016 Strawberry Queen’s Court Member Ashlyn Yarborough, was an eighth-grade student at Tomlin Jr. High School. She was an office assistant for Mr. John Edison, Dean of Boys, and remembers standing outside of his office listening to the sounds of his beloved paddle as it warmed the “Tail-End” of some young men who liked to misbehave.

Mary Yvette Thomas Mathis, former Mayor of Plant City and Assistant Principal of Marshall Middle School, was a four-year-old living with her family on Haines Street, just waiting to become a kindergartener at Glover School.

Marsha Passmore, former Plant City Commissioner and past Plant City Citizen of the Year, said she was eleven years-old and loved to play “school” and “dress up” with her little sister Dodie.

Mark Poppell, Vice-President of Poppell Insurance, was a one-year-old with a full head of bright red hair,

scooting around his house wearing a real cloth diaper, which he said “was held in place by a pair of shiny sharp diaper pens.” OUCH!

Worse than sweet little baby Mark Poppell getting stuck with a diaper pen was having the United States and the Soviet Union standing closer to Armageddon than at any other moment in history. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, leaders of the U.S. and the Soviet Union engaged in a tense, 13-day political and military standoff in October 1962 over the installation of nuclear-armed Soviet missiles on Cuba, just 90 miles from U.S. shores. In a TV address on October 22, 1962, President John Kennedy notified Americans about the presence of the missiles, explained his decision to enact a naval blockade around Cuba, and made it clear the U.S. was prepared to use military force if necessary to neutralize this perceived threat to national security. Following this news, many people feared the world was on the brink of nuclear war.

In October of 1962, my father was a 30-year-old History teacher at Plant City High School. My mother was 28 (she’s now 85), worked for General Telephone here in Plant City, and was 8 months pregnant with me. My sister Karen was a sweet little 2-year-old that from the time she got out of her bed every morning insisted on wearing a metal sand bucket on her head like a hat and walked around with her collection of pacifiers that she called: “Her Ma” (She had 10…one for each finger).

TALK ABOUT SPOILED!! HAHA!

A few days before the Missile Crisis was announced, Mother took my sister over to Titusville to visit my grandfather Clyde Bates, then the Chief Deputy Sheriff for Brevard County, and who had a lost his wife (my grandmother) a few months earlier to an illness. On October 22, 1962, the day President Kennedy made his public address, my grandfather left his office at the courthouse and hurried back to his house to explain what was going on to my mother. He gathered all his “important papers” and gave them to Mother in case something happened to him, packed up my mother and sister, gave them a kiss goodbye, and led them (well us) in a police escort to the Brevard County line. He wanted to get us back to Plant City so we could be with my father since there was threat of nuclear war.

My mother remembers traveling US 1 on the drive back to Plant City, that the major North/South highway to Miami was full of military vehicles transporting tanks, missiles, troops and equipment; that sandbags were being put up everywhere; and people were expecting to see a giant orange glow at any time. However, disaster was avoided when the U.S. agreed to Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev’s offer to remove the Cuban missiles in exchange for the U.S. promising not to invade Cuba. Kennedy also secretly agreed to remove U.S. missiles from Turkey.

WHEW! What a year! Aren’t you glad we made it? If we hadn’t, Mike Sparkman would never have given us “Sparky’s” (no Sparky’s gas stations, no Sparky’s convenience stores, no Sparky’s Fried Chicken or Sparky’s Potato Logs). Sharon Moody would never have been the 2016 Citizen of the Year, Marsha Passmore and her little sister Dodie would never have grown up to still play “dress-up” every day, and I would not have written this article for your enjoyment!

Yes, 1962 was a great year!

Awards were presented to those in special recognition for their contribution to the Plant City.

a. This year’s Lifetime Achievement Award recipients were Ret. Col. Cynthia Cook and her husband, Ret. Lt. Col. Michael Cook. Michael works with veterans at local VA hospitals as well as working at Pasco Hernando State College, HCC, and Hillsborough County Public Schools.
