EDITOR’S LETTER Hello autumn, we’re glad you’re here! Along with that, we are also happy that you, dear reader, have found your way to our magazine full of articles that are designed not only to be read, but to be absorbed, too. While it may be time, for now, to put away the sun block and bikinis, there’s plenty of vicarious travelling to do within our Autumn Issue of FOCUS Student Magazine. You can take a tour with us to some places worth visiting in town, see different fashionable students around the campus, and get acquainted with the student life in our little Herning which is not that little after all when it comes to things to do and places to go. Our ’10 tips’ series continues to share useful hints on different matters – this time, helping the new students to better adapt in a new environment. In another train of thoughts, we hope to see more and more people reading our publication in more and more places. Therefore, we would like to witness in which settings is FOCUS Student Magazine your devoted companion and entertainer. Did you know that highlighting too much can trick your brain into thinking you know the material? Instead: limit your highlighting to a sentence per paragraph. Like this.

Side notes are great!

Have you also considered side notes as a great learning tool? Trust me, it’ll keep your mind sharp when you’re reading and give you fulfilling notes to look back on. This might be obvious to some of our readers, but I’m sure some of you will be able to benefit greatly from these techniques - and if you liked this, I’ve written a few more for you at the end of the article. BUT WHERE DID I GET THIS GREAT IDEA FROM? Well I didn’t come up with them myself, but in the spirit of Coursera, I’m sharing them with everyone else for free! Before I get ahead of myself however, I want to tell you a quick story. As an entrepreneur and passionate spirite by heart. One, who never quite fitted into the Danish schooling system. I’ve needed a place to learn and educate myself, which allows me the

freedom to choose and study when and what I want, while leaving my life open to pursuing other aspects of my life. ENTER COURSERA; WHAT I BELIEVE IS GOING TO BE THE FUTURE OF EDUCATION. Being in a full time job, where I’m both hiring, training, educating and coaching new candidates - I have newfound respect and admiration for teachers. That is to say, newfound respect and admiration for the great teachers - those who are always looking for the newest information to benefit their students, the newest techniques in teaching, those teachers whom look to inspire the best in us and thodr that open up to their students to both improve themselves as educators and better understand the student as an individual with a powerful voice and opinion of their own. Those stuck in age-old ways of dusty chalk and copy/paste learning never quite caught my attention. To be a good teacher, you have to care, and caring can be challenging and difficult when you’re responsible for a large group of people - some of whom themselves, do not necessarily care about their future.

So what are our great educators doing now to move with the times and innovate their field? They’re taking it to the internet! They’re actually preparing their best material and making it free to access for the whole world! Now if you ask me, that is true commitment to bringing knowledge to the next generation. WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT? Coursera has just been up for a few years, launched back in April 2012, but it already has 9.2 million users worldwide! Anyone in the field of business will tell you that is a pretty impressive growth rate. Their strategy is simple and their mission clear: “Coursera is an online platform that partners with top universities and organizations worldwide, to offer courses online for anyone to take, for free. We envision a future where everyone has access to a world-class education. We aim to empower people with education that will improve their lives, the lives of their families, and the communities they live in.” It works by simply going online and selecting a course, you want to learn more about and sign up for it. Spend time whenever you are able to by learning on your own schedule and reaching a goal, you’ll receive recognition for your accomplishment. So in just a few hours of your time each week, you can learn more about topics like: Finance, Sustainability, History, Computer Science, Model Thinking, Design, Language, Relationships, Data Science and more than 400 other courses from 83 different educational partners!

As promised, here are the other tricks, I would recommend for your studies Recall. Remember what you read about highlighting? Take a second to think about the idea again. That’s it. When you learn something new, look away from the paper, and recall it to your memory. This is a powerful way of helping your brain create solid memory chunks and to better understand a new concept. Visualize. How do “mind-magicians” remember 50 random words in a row, both in order and backwards order? It’s a simple trick, that everyone can learn. Visualize the content in a memorable way (smell it, hear it, feel it, see it - make the picture funny, sad or in some other way special). You can use this for remembering anything: theories, formulas, quotes, numbers and facts.

WHAT’S REALLY SO GREAT ABOUT IT? For starters you have some of the best educational material available to you from around the global. What you also get from studying something more, is that you will gain valuable insights to help you in your life, be it school, career or even personal. You’ll be able to come up with alternative ideas and solutions for how to solve the problems, you face everyday, and you will be able to supplement your current education with great content. Heck, you can even practice how to be best leader for your next semester project and help your team get the best grades! This is truly a unique opportunity of expanding your mind outside the reaches of Herning - maybe you’ll even find a way of improving Focus Magazine ;) JUST ONE MORE THING. Well for starters, as someone who is looking through cv’s on a daily basis, let me tell it looks damned good to have a lot of those Coursera Certificates listed on your LinkedIn. Imagine when you’ve graduated and started looking for the dream job, but all your classmates have done the same. So earn yourself a verified certificate and give yourself the added spice of a few official certificates in Leadership, Marketing or Teamwork - it might just be the key ingredient to landing that job! I started in the beginning of this year in April and can already boast 3 different certificates in the fields of Entrepreneurship, Leadership and Education.

I for one use this technique for presentations, in just 5 minutes I’m able to remember the entire structure of a 30-40 minute presentation! Here’s a little exercise for you to try it out on: Do you remember the formula for calculating the force of an object in motion? - if not, then this will be a great way to remember it forever! Imagine a Mule. Google it, if you’re having trouble visualizing it. Try to imagine even how it smells. Now picture it flying through the air and picking up more and more speed. Give it wings if you want to. Hear the sounds that it’s making moving through the clouds and accelerating faster and faster. That’s all. A Flying Mule Accelerating through the air. Force = Mass x Acceleration. F= MA. If you did this exercise correctly, you’ll have quite a funny picture in your head and you’ll never forget the formula for Force :)

DON’T LET SCHOOLING INTERFERE WITH YOUR EDUCATION Mark Twain If you’ve read this far, I would like to thank you for committing your time to this article and reading it with an open-mind. I highly recommend that you take the course called “Learning How to Learn” - it will offer you valuable insights into how you can get better at studying and memorizing new material for your current education. It will most definitely bring you tools to help you better understand your own learning. Besides what have you got to lose, it’s free! So get to it already and good luck in your future studies ;)

Last but not least! This is the one, we all struggle with. You have to repeat and practice anything, that you truly want to master! There’s no secret to creating great long term memory chunks for mastering new material. You need to repeat everything you learn again and again over a longer period of time (that’s why tests are actually good for you!). In the words of Tony Robbins: Practice, practice, practice.

If you were to wonder what it takes for you to be successful within your chosen profession, here is an insight I hope will be of inspiration to you, made with help from a young independent business owner. More than 13.000 thousand new businesses have been established during the first six months of 2014 in Denmark, making it seem rather common for the average worker to become independent. Have you ever found yourself wondering what compiles these driven people, which structures support them and what range they really have? Being curious as to whether there are certain features that make up these individuals, I started asking questions.

12 The subject to provide answers to my questions, Kristoffer Holten Madsen, has just been accepted to Corporate Law at CBS per September 2014. He carries a last name which no less than 64.701 Danish men and women share as of this summer, and he is one of the many aspiring online entrepreneurs today, having established an online shop prior to engaging in any higher education. According to Kristoffer, it is without doubt that you are the only one responsible for your own success Standing proud and professional, this answer of fair defense seems quite honest, and yet it completely eradicates my idea of an entrepreneur being a person with a very specific set of components attached to their blueprint of personal characteristics. He finds that many people may point to hard work and strong will as the core of being an independent business professional, but in his mind the most important thing is to be a quick learner and possess an instinctive aptitude for what you are working with. His personal blueprint still remains fairly plain to the naked eye. Contractors may say buildings stand alone when being completed before their eyes, and even though we are prone to say the same of successful individuals, in truth, the opposite is more fitting for a successful independent professional, who must know how to lean on the right contacts.

13 Working independently, you are thus highly dependent on a network. And while the blueprints of personal characteristics may be set, different encounters of both kind and cruel nature may change the course of business, just as the strength of the structure of support behind any person can have a big influence on the opportunity for success. These aspects of the human environment can be of great importance to both initial inspiration and drive, but in Kristoffer’s case it was his online, non-close network that made it possible for him to succeed. In Kristoffer’s line of business, being the grand online one, he believes that in order to be successful, it depends on whether you have a general flair for sales and marketing and on how you brand yourself online. He mentions his passion for working independently was awaken through the experience of being in the environment of other fellow independents - and thus his choice of studying multimedia design was mainly meant as a means to a dream, which he gladly continues by proceeding to expand his in educational curriculum vitae (CV), by studying business laws. The only feature Kristoffer will spell out modestly as a force of his, is the fact that he has his way with people and that he likes a challenge. Paired with passion, the only feature truly needed for becoming a successful independent must be the one of willpower to learn. The enthusiasm for one’s line of work will do the trick past any specific structure of support, personal blueprint of characteristics or even the right environment of opportunities. All modes of success seem to become inferior to the great architect, and that great architect of your professional future is you.

You just moved to Herning and the initial enthusiasm of discovering a new place, new people still lingers. It won’t take you long until you start talking with some of the older students, who will probably tell you how you will be stuck in this boring city where there’s absolutely nothing to do for the next couple of years. Do not freak out! They’re not entirely right! Fair enough, Herning is not that big and there are many other exciting places to be, but there’s actually more to it than meets the eye. We’re here to tell you about some of our favorite places and give you some fresh ideas and new alternatives, which come to prove that our little Herning is not so bad after all. If you’re not necessarily the adventurous type, and you prefer chilling over a drink or a bite, there are plenty of cafes and restaurants – most of them located on the walking street or close to it. It’s a great way to socialize with your new classmates, flatmates or neighbors and most of these places offer discounts for students! As for the nightlife, we’re pretty sure you’ll discover it by yourself in no time! Now, if you’re a book lover, then you’ll probably visit the library as soon as you get your yellow card. Lucky for you, its location has just changed and it’s now in a brand new building on the main pedestrian street. The English books collection is not massive, but it will suffice; furthermore, they also have books in French, Russian and a few other languages so you can always practice your foreign languages skills. Living in the campus does not offer that many options for leisure activities, besides the occasional parties at the Student House, their gym and the pool room, unless of course, you count doing laundry as

an exciting activity. No worries though, you’ll discover soon enough that fun will be at its best on a random Tuesday night, when your Birk neighbours decide to have a party. Maybe you weren’t necessarily invited, but we’re all students and you’re always welcome. These are some ideas for indoor endeavors, but Herning also offers some options for the nature lovers. The Geometrical Garden near TEKO is the perfect place to just wander around, think about life or why not - have a picnic with your friends. It’s not really a maze, but every time I go there I get equally excited about not knowing where I will end up on the next turn. Next to the Geometrical Garden, you will find the Sculpture Park with 36 sculptures circled up – quite weird ones, but still worth a look. Most probably you have already noticed the huge black ‘thing’ in Birk Centerpark, with 60 meters in diameter known as Elia – that’s actually a piece of art. Or as Mr. Ivar Hansen, Speaker of the Danish Parliament has said: “Elia is exactly what we make of it. Art reaches out to the diversity of the individual.” What you might not know about it, is that its pillars can function as lightning attractors. At random intervals – nobody knows exactly when – a gigantic 8 meters high gas flame arises from the deep of the shaft and burns for 30 seconds. It’s definitely worth it to be in the right place at the right time to see it. But we have to emphasize that it is said to be extremely dangerous to be on or near the sculpture during thundery weather conditions.

16 Art can actually be found all over Birk Centerpark. In addition to some artsy landmarks scattered around, there are two art museums waiting for visitors! Carl-Henning Pedersen & Else Alfelts Museum is the pair of eye-catching blue buildings next to TEKO that exhibits over 4000 pieces created by the married couple. HEART – Herning Museum of Contemporary Art offers, as the name already suggests , brilliant contemporary art divided by genre. Different changing exhibitions of the work of international and Danish artists add great value to the permanent collection. While wandering around Herning, there are a few places you should definitely check out in the open. Most of you have probably been to the Messecenter and its surroundings, but what you might have missed is something halfway to it. Right next to Kaj Zartows Vej lies the highest peak of Herning – Knudmosebjerget. I mean, don’t have any high expectations towards it, we’re still in one of the flattest countries, but from the top of it you can have a pretty amazing view of Herning and its surroundings . There is also a table with benches, so pack your picnic basket and go enjoy the sunset in the front row with your friends. In Herning, beaches are not the strongest point, but there is still something to offer. A favorite among the locals is the Fuglsang Sø, which is a small man-made lake in the northern part of Herning. It has very clean water and a nice sand beach along it . Close to the lake, there is also an illuminated path called Lysløjpen, which is

perfect for jogging. But of course, if this lake is not large enough and you don’t mind having a bit of a longer trip, then go find the lake in Sunds (~7km from Herning), which is the largest moorland lake in Denmark. Believe it or not, but you can find some nice natural places for a spontaneous getaway quite in the middle of the town. Right behind the train station, there is a park called Søndre Anlæg that is known for its large rhododendron bushes. If you are not into admiring the flora there, you can have a picnic or a barbecue (there is even a fireplace for it), play sport games or spend time with the ducks who live there in the pond – plenty of room for anything. During the summer, it was hard to find a day when the park wasn’t crowded, so I can assume people love this place! Riding a bike will probably be your main means of transportation and you’ll commute to school and work, but there’s no reason not to enjoy a pleasant, relaxing bike ride every now and then. You’ll discover that Herning has some really nice bike tracks through some of the forests surrounding the town that are quite enjoyable when you want to get away from the noisy streets. Take the road less traveled as Frost’s poem says and enjoy the trees!

Herning Hurricanes The Storm is About to Come! Text by: Frida Hoffmann

”You should join us!” That was Skirma, when he found out that I have been a basketball player in the past. The average height in the team is around 190 cm, so I decided to support them with full devotion from a safe distance. However, I was brave enough to ask him a couple of questions… But before we jump to things, I guess we need to clear this big basketball situation here. I live in Birk and I have never heard about this team and their success before. And it wasn’t until a couple of international students started to spread the word all over the great town of Herning and sent out invitations to their games, that the solidary society started to show its good side again.

What is your very first memory of this miraculous game? How did you start to play and why? Middle of winter, -15ish degrees, shooting hoops outside with my best friend. Talking about true passion here. My dedication has left my parents without any doubts about letting me sign up for basketball club. So yes, I was driven by internal passion. Some general well-known truths - Lithuania is popular for its three B’s, namely Basketball, Babes and Beer; Basketball being Lithuania’s second religion, it is an irreplaceable element of our culture. When did you figure out that there is a team in Herning? The first week I came to Herning actually. Old habits die hard I guess and I was equally homesick and basketball-sick…if that’s even a word. When was the point you could notice the potential in the team and in the players? When we managed to get a more stable roster. Most of the members are students and the mobility of these people is extremely high. Therefore, it is hard to plan ahead. But we are both ambitious and excited about the upcoming season, so just come and support us! What was your biggest success as a ‘Herning Hurricane’? Winning the 3rd division of Danish basketball league! We successfully managed to build a strong team and make new friends, and that is substantial no matter what.

GO HURRICANES! Note: In the history of Herning and AU Herning, Herning Hurricanes is the first internationally mixed team, which has won the Danish basketball league not once, but twice! So be proud of them, they have a bright future, a strong team and strong beliefs.

What are your team’s plans for the near future? The starting point would be getting into 2nd division of the Danish basketball league. One thing is clear; we are the owners of our destiny, no one can take it from us. When would be the next time we could watch a game? The Danish Basketball Federation - DBBF, is working on the schedules. The season starts in September, so stay tuned! http://www. herningbasketball.dk/

Everyone says or likes to say that students have a limited amount of time; that they prefer simple and quick foods and most of all that students usually live on a budget. Whether true or not, as a student myself I know that it’s not always easy to come up with cooking ideas and to make them as fast as possible, because we usually tend to cook in those moments when we are already hungry, don’t we? I don’t necessarily agree with frozen goods or with fattening and unhealthy food choices, that is why even the ‘on a budget’ meals have to be full of nutrients and ensure that the body gets its vitamins and supplements.

Caprese Salad Since salads are one of the easiest foods to cook, my recent trip to the Italian soil made me remember the good old ‘Caprese Salad’, which I’ll advise you to try to cook at home as well. It doesn’t take more than 5 minutes and it’s delicious, trust me!

Ingredients: 1 large ripe tomato or 2-3 cherry tomatoes One bag of mozzarella (100 g) Salt, pepper, olive oil and fresh basil Directions: Cut the tomato(es) and mozzarella in thin round slices. Layer them on a plate as shown in the picture. Add some salt and pepper, drizzle a bit of olive oil and garnish with 2 basil leaves. As simple as that and tasty enough for a lunch/ dinner idea!

Quick Brownie Now, I guess most of us love sweets. And there’s always a sweet crave in the most unexpected moments, like very late at night or on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Baking something that doesn’t take more than 15 minutes, with ingredients that most of us have in their kitchen, is a dream come true, right? And if it satisfies that sweet tooth as well, why not give it a try? I recently made my own version of brownies and they turned out delicious! Ingredients: 1 egg 1 Tbs (tablespoon) cocoa powder 2 Tbs of flour (corn flour, almond flour or simple all-purpose flour) 1 Tbs coconut oil (you can use butter if you are not dairy free) 2 Tbs water Pinch of salt 1 Tsp (teaspoon) vanilla ½ Tsp baking powder Optional: 1½ Tbs of Greek yogurt for moisture Directions: Mix all ingredients in a bowl. Then put it in a ceramic pan and microwave it for 1-2 minutes depending on how done you like it, or bake it at 200 degrees for 10 full minutes until the brownies begin to pull away from the sides of the pan. shoes made the faintest sound against the steel floor as she walked towards the room where they waited. Why couldn’t they wait a bit longer? Let them wait a little bit longer. But there were some who couldn’t afford her tardiness. What were they going to think and what were they going to say? As always, she expected only one thing, because that’s how it always went in these meetings. They would all look funny at her, and then they would look at each other to see if anyone knows her and after that it would start. She wondered which would be the joke of the day: “Hey, didn’t know this was a kindergarten now” or “Maybe you got lost. The secretary’s office is on the left” and all the other smart one-liners. The faces of contempt, disregard and that ‘I don’t quite believe it’

look were so familiar, she felt like she was almost getting a glimpse of the future. Knowing those who were waiting and also knowing that some had more pride to defend than others, wasn’t of any use. They were the people you had to watch out for. Those which had something to prove. Names were spinning in file-like backgrounds. There were four, including her. Kanda, she had met before. Tactical infiltration was her specialty, which is just another way to say spy. Tall and willowy, she was that kind of beauty that made you stop for a second, but the kind you could never remember why a few minutes later. Light hair, neither blonde nor brown, framed her strikingly symmetrical features, with sea foam eyes. She always made it seem that nothing was amiss, but her instinct told her that she was only seeing what the other girl wanted her to see. And that was never a pleasant feeling. Even so, the last time they met they worked together so she hoped for at least one friendly face. Bradford Mass was a former American soldier and he was the one that worried her the most . His file described him as a man of extreme size, 6.5 feet tall if she remembered correctly, hand-to-hand combat being his specialty. With past experiences in guerilla wars, he was an expert tactician and the commander type. The type that would never accept her on a team. This being said, she could not imagine how he had befriended the most elusive in the band - Niemand. Niemand was the one they called “man of the desert”,

rarely leaving the African conflicts for what he called petty gadget wars in Europe. And yet, there he was, most likely at the request of Bradford. What an unlikely duo. The man in the file was shown wearing a white scarf around his head and face so that the only features you could notice were his tanned, dried skin and light blue eyes. She had heard of him as being an expert sniper, but the thing with rumors and files was that they were almost always spun around the little facts that were available in the vast military network. Even if they were all on the same side, no member was to posses more information about the other, than the strictly necessary. She caught a glimpse of herself in the mirrored wall that lined the hallway across the meeting room and started to reconsider her disappointment with the various people that were usually disregarding her abilities. Seeing her small, common frame instead of the usual tall and androgynous look that female fighters had, made her think that maybe she would’ve reacted just the same if she had to switch places with them. Dark hair framed a somewhat oval face, contrasting with a smooth but pale, sickly skin. Scrunching a nose that she deemed too straight and narrow to have any kind of character, she tried to smile, while watching the dark brown eyes staring back with something still resembling insecurity. This only served a single purpose which she regretted moments later. Fine wrinkles that only some twenty year old could have gathered around those large eyes, making the sunken, uneven scars underlining them, going into the hairline, seem even more obvious. With a sigh she turned away from the wall. It’s not that she was ashamed of them, but it just made the staring and the down staring worse. And to make it even “better”, they chose to bring her in the one day in which she was wearing a skirt. It was big and round and it was pink. The dreaded moment was approaching as her skinny heels hit the metal floor at even times, covered by the unsteady noises of her escorts’ boots. The door was

getting closer, just as a strange fight of fleet air was buzzing around , making the edges of her vision a bit unclear. She didn’t feel afraid, that was a rare thing to feel, but she had been in the same situation so many times, that it was just plain tiresome. Just something else to bring up the next time she had the chance to talk to John. John. They called him that because they didn’t really know what else to call him. This was a man she could never bring herself to dislike even though she had so many reasons. Always in the same black suit and white shirt, which she imagined him to own in a million and one samples in some kind of secret room; he was a tall, tall man, always enjoying something that she never managed to understand: looking down at people. Eyes so light, they seemed almost colorless, rarely failed to drill out the truth from everybody and his receding brown hairline accentuated the hard lines of his sharp face. He was tough and unimpressionable and maybe that’s why she liked him, because he always treated people the same. Straight to the point of rudeness, and most likely past it, but equal. Somehow, nobody seemed to remember a time when he wasn’t working for the Independent Division, not that once you started working for them you remained independent for long. Maybe, some liked to believe otherwise , but they had some secret way of instilling a small quality resembling loyalty into people that never knew of such things. And for those who did know of it, well, she’d just say that there weren’t a whole many things she wouldn’t do for John.

Danes are normally blessed with a gorgeous Scandinavian skin complexion, and you will not see girls here wearing a lot of make-up. Actually none, most of the time. But there is one exception to the rule – and that is mascara – a lot of it. And make it waterproof, because rain here will most probably not stop for more than 5 minutes.

The gloomy weather isn’t just a state of mind in Denmark, but also a state of style. Inspired by nature or not, dark colors are undoubtedly predominant in a Danish girl’s closet. From the classic black, to shades of green, grey and brown, you will see it everywhere throughout most of the year. The only exception is the shoes. Some Danes will wear some bolder colors for a special occasion, like a wedding or on holidays – I mean, wearing black in the summer is not really the best idea.

Although the ladies here keep their minimalistic style sharp, there are some soft spots that any of them will not avoid spoiling. And those are jewels. Charms and daisies, Denmark’s pride in precious metal manufacture, are the two brands that any Danish woman that respects herself will at least own one of. Pandora and Georg Jensen are a shining must in every girl’s jewelry box.

Either it’s a classic knit, or a chunky one, the size of your scarf should be enormous. It is the fluffiest accessory and you should be able to wrap it and wrap it and keep on wrapping it around. It’s going to be your best hope on surviving the Danish wind.

Presumably the same eccentric Mads Christensen was the one that inspired Danish guys to be very bold when it comes to socks – yes, socks. It seems to be like multi colored striped socks are a big hit among Danish men, especially – paradoxically – when paired with suits. Think Bjorn Borg, even though it’s a Swedish brand. From Converse and neon colored Nike’s, to the new rage in comfy shoes - New Balances, it’s not hard to guess that sneakers are a Dane’s best friend. Either paired with jeans or tights, to dresses and skirts, it’s the first choice footwear, in a country where you learn how to bike before you learn how to talk. It’s a unisex style staple that is allowed to be in the craziest color, totally disregarding your ‘ninja’ outfit.

The same XXL principle goes for the bags. The box-like shopper bag is a resistant hard leather bag that will fit anything from laptop to heavy schoolbooks or any other girly must haves. But most importantly it will fit perfectly in your bike basket. Practical and stylish, and scratch free!

Sports clothes are not only for working out, they make up for an important part of daily men fashion. Although it might look like they just came out of the gym, they haven’t. It’s just their everyday casual sweats, which can be easily worn elsewhere but indoors. Either it is planned or not, it will be quite popular, especially among teenagers. And Hummel, Danes really like Hummel.

Where women will keep it simple, men will dare to be a lot bolder – and that can sometimes turn into a color explosion. If not socks, one area which some – I am not saying all – but some Danes will go really crazy, is pants. And it seems like some won’t accept black as a classical pants color and will own every color of them except that.

Although it looks like Danish guys don’t really fuss too much about their appearance, it’s all of course an illusion. Their wardrobe consists of several pairs of perfect jeans, to be paired with an infinite amount of basic one-colour tees. If it’s a shirt, it will most probably be a checkered one, and if it’s not, it will most probably have a paired Mads Christensen butterfly, and that would mean it’s probably party time.

Inspired by Burberry Prorsum Fall/Winter 2014

After the warm embrace of summer, fall is the last we want to think about. And yet, here we are, falling in love with it every year. For me, fall always comes in the morning; when I suddenly feel I want to wear my blanket outside the house and the huge woolen scarf works just well with a summerly Bretton shirt. During fall, we praise the pieces that make us feel warm and cozy, from soft sweaters to theatrical scarves and contemporaneous capes. Are you ready to uncover the last shades of green and wander through enchanted forests?

37 FALL/WINTER 2014 Valentino’s designers approach cape dressing in a classic yet simple manner. Having mod as background inspiration, Maria and Pierpaolo enhance pieces like evening gowns, sweaters and capes with a shirt collar, which is already considered the house’s signature. The blue cape in soft lines and simple cuts without any superfluous details, reminisces the fresh purity of Scandinavian design. Besides the random embroidered birds and the discreet closing neck buckle, the focus is on the thick fabric and the long silhouette. A generous front slit combines the skirt with the black sweater underneath the cape perfectly.

CAPES & SCARVES What comes around goes around, they say. In fashion at least, this works every season. ORIGIN Once religion and army related, capes and scarves are thrown back in the most féerique manner this fall. In a celebration of autumn, scarves are imprinted with Bloomsbury set inspired color combos and motifs, while capes are sartorially stylized. Italian and British, two cultures recognized for their attention to appearance and style, bring a note of romanticism and versatility to this year’s crisp season.

Mix the rich British textile industry together with the Bloomsbury Group aesthetics and Cristopher Bailey’s limitless creativity at Burberry. How would you imagine a Burberry scarf for 2014’s fall/winter? The answer is a generously long scarf hand-painted with flowers, leaves and geometric patterns in the most revitalizing color blends. A scarf evoking the feeling of a morning walk through the light-drenched orchard. Early beige shades of leaves merged with summer’s last delicate pink flowers and autumn’s first ripe fruits in a contrasting warm burgundy.

Due to its practicality and initially simple construction, the cape was present in our wardrobe since ancient times and it underwent numerous interpretations, gaining lots of expressivity, from religious vestments, to royal ranks, superhero powers and artistic movements; but only started to get popular in 1895’s England. At the end of the 19th century, women often wore the cape together with wide sleeve dresses and pointed high heels.

WHAT’S NEXT? At the peak of the fairytale season, captivating scarfs and dramatic capes energize our wardrobes through colors and new silhouettes. The trend of embroidery at Valentino is still fresh and is going to be explored in the seasons to come, while prints are given a rather painterly meaning nowadays.

Over time, the scarf had many roles as well, from a military rank symbol in Ancient China, to a travel souvenir in the 1960’s France and a practical necessity in the US, worn à la Rosie the Riveter. More than this, nowadays, the scarf is a chic fashion statement, available in a multitude of shapes, fabrics and colors, expressing our style values and aesthetics. Influenced by the fairytale and art trends, observed in the last two years, the season of fall/ winter ‘14 is using fine fabrics and textures as a base for dreamy and exuberant details, from the messy creative prints at Burberry Prorsum to couture-quality embroidered birds at Valentino.

HOW TO WEAR THEM?

Choose a scarf in natural fibers like wool and cashmere or a soft poncho in autumnal contrasting shades and wear it with your messy yet natural hair. Paint your nails or wear your eye make-up in aubergine shades. Make your cape more urban and wear it with a spotted veil decorated beanie.

THE KNITS

In 1962, Rykiel created the first fine knit sweater, renewing the classic cable knit sweater through close-to-the-body fit and bright colors. Since the beginning, Rykiel had her own fashion philosophy - la Démode, which expressed the idea that a garment should fit the desires of women and not those of the creator. Today, she is recognized for promoting the idea that sweaters should be worn close to the skin, for using rainbow and black stripes in knitwear and for creating jacquard printed sweaters displaying spontaneous little drawings or astonishing phrases.

Of course it’s time to talk about sweaters again. Not only because this fall we embrace a more relaxed and down-toearth aesthetic, but we are also going to assist the development of new concepts in knitting. ORIGIN At London’s Victoria & Albert Museum the oldest hand-knitted garments are showcased – pairs of stockings dating back to 1000BC, made from wool and cotton in ancient Egypt. Thanks to the African trade routes, knitting arrived in Europe in the 13th century, and even though it was initially reserved for royalties, it became so popular one century later, that both men and women knew how to knit. Europe was hand knitting up until the Industrial Revolution, when William Lee developed the first knitting machine in England 1589 - funny enough, it was first put in function in Rouen France. Lee’s knitting machine was able to produce stockings and represented the first major step in the mechanization of the textile industry. Since then, the knitting industry developed in many ways, machines being nowadays able to use various yarns, produce stretchy fabrics and create complex patterns. The sweater changed too, from a sports item to a stylish garment in the 20th century, when Coco Chanel started creating knitted garments for her collections. During the ‘60s and ‘70s, sweaters became widely accessible, being seriously influenced by the ethnic style of the period and by the ‘queen of knits’ - Sonia Rykiel, and her philosophy on fashion and knitwear.

FALL/WINTER 2014 The 61 year old Italian brand, Missoni, took the zigzag and transformed it into one of the most recognizable patterns in fashion. Located in northern Italy, the family-owned company is run by three generations of women from Rosita to Angela and Margherita Missoni. Nowadays, little of the Missoni power relies on the pattern only, the company focusing on complex knits, designs and textile experimentation. Angela Missoni, the house creative director played with the brand’s signature knits and color combos by having ‘a free spirited woman’ in mind. For fall she created knitted tank dresses, vests and sweaters in creatively treated wool yarns. From 3D textures to inlayed sparkling yarns, materials like boiled wool, silk and cashmere, the collection expresses the brand’s ability to keep on being innovative while still following its original values and Italian commitment to quality.

By combining solid colors like yellow, orange and turquoise with natural hues of white, grey and brown, they manage to highlight the exquisite details of the collection. Geraldo da Conceição has been holding the legacy of Sonia Rykiel’s fashion spirit and creativity since 2012. By using clean white - beige and black grey color stories, the designer accurately shows the beauty of each shade. Spots of pink and lavender were sneaking in from time to time. A reminder of the street style, the sweaters are layered in a relaxed manner – a sweater around the neck, a cardigan over another sweater, over a knitted skirt, all displaying the infinite French moi, moi, moi. WHAT’S NEXT? This season, designers are bringing old legends from the fashion industry back to life. What Sonia Rykiel used to create for her first store in Paris almost 50 years ago, our generation wouldn’t have the chance to know without Geraldo da Conceicao’s interest in reproaching ideas that once made Rykiel instantly famous. We are assisting to both fashion history lessons and developments of the textile industry. HOW TO WEAR THEM?

The Birk Choir

Interview with Inge Marie – Studenterpraest Birk

Hello, my name is Inge Marie Kirketerp Hansen and starting March 2012, I’ve been Student Chaplain in Birk – in Danish ‘Studenterpræst’. When I’m not in Birk, I work as a pastor at the church in Gjellerup, which is a part of the Lutheran Church of Denmark. As a pastor, I have sworn secrecy that nothing a student tells me can leave the room, therefore everyone’s words are safe with me. It is known that life as a student can be hard and this is why Birk is supposed to have a student Chaplain. The Student Chaplain is available for personal counselling or just for informal talks, not necessarily related to spiritual matters. Whether one feels lonely or is stressed, he is always welcome to talk to me. Subjects can vary very much from relationships, grief, worries, finding one’s own path, ethical issues, the meaning of life or whatever one feels like sharing and talking about. Again, it is important to know that every discussion is entirely confidential. The service is free of any cost and is open to all students, no matter their religious background or beliefs. From my experience I can tell that a lot of students are glad that they can come and talk to the Student Chaplain.

I heard that last year you were in charge of TEKO’s choir; is it still going on?

What type of activities have you had so far?

Yes it is! The choir is still available and is happening every Wednesday from 4pm to 5.30pm. We are rehearsing in Auditorium A at TEKO.

The choir is open to everybody – both students and teachers – and people can just show up. But if you would like to get the latest news about various events happening or just organizational matters, you can join the choirs’ group on Facebook. [Birk Student Choir]

It was back in 2012 when we sang at an event for all the families who have opened the doors of their homes for students at ‘family dinners’. The choir was also present at a Christmas party at Gjellerup Church. This fall, we will rehearse at Teko from September the 3rd until the autumn holiday, and afterwards with “Gjellerup Kirkes Julekor” – Gjellerups’ Christmas Choir starting October 22nd. A date to remember is Tuesday, December 16th at 7.30pm, when one big Christmas Concert will be held in Gjellerup Kirke and everybody is welcome to come!

What type of music do you sing? Is it only vocals or also instruments?

Can students enroll in other activities as well, besides the choir?

Me, personally, I have always played the piano and sung in different choirs so I’m the conductor of the choir. We sing all sorts of genres, from rock, pop, gospel to jazz. Some of the songs we have been singing at the choir are “Don’t you worry ‘bout a thing” by Stevie Wonder, “Let it grow” by Eric Clapton and the gospel Christmas song, “Oh, holy night”. The first song we’ll do this semester is Pharrell Wiliams’ “Happy”. I’m very much looking forward to that!.

From time to time, I plan small or larger events. Two years ago, we had a Gospel workshop during a whole Saturday, where Laura Kjærsgaard, who finished second in Denmark’s first X-factor competition, leaded the workshop. And just before this summer holiday, I held a ‘DIY-afternoon’ in the cantina at Teko, where all the students could come and make their own marshmallows. So, the extra-activities at the choir not necessarily involving singing, can vary and are again, open for everyone.

What does one have to do to participate in the choir?

How did you start this activity? Was it hard to gather people to join the choir? Birk is relatively hard to reach and target, because there is no big platform gathering everyone around here, therefore I use Facebook, posters and the Student Counselling department that helps me reach out to students and inform them about the Student Choir and Chaplain. The size of the choir varies a lot, it depends on the availability of people and whether or not they have exams or not, but we manage to make a group of around 8 to 15 people every time we meet.

What can people expect from it in the near future? I hope that the choir will continue to grow and that plenty of students will have the opportunity to experience the joy of singing. One thing I am also longing for is that students will get to feel the effect of the choir and as the slogan of Birk Student Choir says: “Come as you are – leave singing”.
