EDITOR’S LETTER To be very honest with you, I had a totally different letter prepared initially. One full of laments for the lack of snow… until it started snowing in Denmark. All my sorrows were suddenly gone. Well, it’s not as much of a real winter as back home (with snow deluge and -25 degrees) but it’s something! The team behind the chef-d’œuvre you’re holding decided to give a helping hand for creating that real winter feeling by preparing a cover that is under a blanket of snow and with temperatures in the double-digit negatives. So you need at least two layers of clothes or a cup of very hot/strong drink to hold and go through this frosty magazine. It will warm your heart and mind, though! Now buckle up and get ready for some fun, useful and stimulating reading – all in one magazine! The articles are better than ever and enable you to find out more about your fellow students, feed the entrepreneurial beast inside you, and help you with plenty of tips on variety of subjects. What we love the most, is starting a dialog with and getting feedback from our readers – and this is exactly what happened after publishing “How to befriend Danes: A guide for international students” in our latest issue. Danish students wanted to know how are things the other way around and we took the challenge by giving them some answers. Oh, yes we did! Since we are aiming to be the #1 source of information – be it school, career, or leisure related – for the students on Birk Campus, let us know what would you like to read about to help us improve and please you even more! All kinds of tips, suggestions and constructive criticism are welcome on the email address focusstudentmagazine@gmail.com or our Facebook fan page. Now dive into reading the magazine, or just gaze a bit more the masterpiece on the right that my team created of me (yeah, it’s me!) and let your mind wander in the snowy forests and mountains… But then don’t forget to return to the magazine! RADINA NEDELEVA Text by Loredana Musat Photos by Janis Zirnitis
Most students graduate and enter the job market along with thousands of other unemployed people, struggling to finally apply all that theoretical knowledge and gain some experience, while others who are braver decide to create their own job. And that is exactly what Radina Nedeleva did! With a BA in International Communication and Multimedia and an AP in International Sales and Marketing Management, Radina started her own video animation company, Pro-Motion Tales, thus spending her time not writing cover letters, but creating compelling animations.

The Nordic’s largest fashion event runs shorter than most of fashion weeks. However, it is a three-day feast that celebrates sartorial extravagance and fresh blood. Copenhagen Fashion Week is well-known for pulling all the strings and bringing established brands and new, hungry talents onto runway that comes alive with stunning living set. Another thing that every fashionista can count on is discovering and falling in love with Scandinavian take on design. The internationally appraised laid-back sense and elegance flows on the streets of Copenhagen as industry influencers, Danish royalty and fashion design students are coming together to have a blast.
No chance to miss out, we hope Text by Eva Cao Thi and Aela Nikolova
Copenhagen Fashion Week is truly capturing the Scandinavian distinctiveness. Henrik Vibskov is a perfect example. His surreal imagination emerges into real world, creating odd and wonderful sets for his show. After every season, journalists and fashionistas find their girl crush on streets and runways of Copenhagen, falling in love with Scandinavian “je ne sais quoi”. Apart from these short affairs, visitors can always bet to find something out of place, sort of outrageous, that they will remember for a longer while. Even though most of us can only dream of entering the “invite only” zone,
we can still enjoy the rush of fashion that takes over the city atmosphere. CPHFW programme includes emerging designers as well, but the trade fairs and off-schedule events are the hotspots to catch the latest and future trends at. This season, Copenhagen Fashion Week responds to digital development and fashion lovers at home can enjoy happenings via SnapChat and Periscope - whether you want to catch the early train and be there in person, or keep it low and stay at home.
3-4-5 FEBRUARY 2016
Indeed, fashion students have a safe spot at Copenhagen Fashion Week. VIA Design, being the largest school of design and business in Denmark, has a fashion show fit into the tight schedule on Friday, 5th of February. Besides VIA Design fashion show, there is much more to visit. A variety of trade fairs are taking place at CFW, running from CIF, CIFF Kids, CIFF Raven and Revolver.
25
CIFF is definitely the highlight of this winter’s trade fairs. This state-of-the-art event hosts a large variety of innovative concepts in a highly curated artistic environment, as well as freshly entertaining naming choices and an obvious love for caps lock. The trade show, founded in 1993, now includes CIFF (not a household cleaning brand), RAVEN (not a bird), CIFF KIDS, CIFF SHOWROOMS and CIFF SHOES. CIFF’S areas are divided between 9 segments; LAB, SLEEK, URBAN, PERFORMANCE, PREMIUM, STYLE SETTERS,
A must-visit this year is the Revolver Village, the Festival of All Fairs, excluding the hipster bands and drunk teenagers. Revolver is the Beyoncé of trade shows, boasting an impressive list of visiting brands, including big international fish like Carhartt, Levis and Puma, big Danish fish like Samsøe Samsøe, Mads Nørgaard, RAINS and Henrik Vibskov, and some weird, but charming fish (my personal top-three Revolver Brand Name Awards 2016 go to 3. Just Junkies – casual menswear; 2. Sneaky Fox – cute pantyhose; 1. For Love and Lemons – it’s a surprise). Not to mention that we have our local pride to boast, be it through almost century-old companies with own knitted design legacy (S.N.S. Herning with their iconic Fisherman sweater)
STYLE SETTERS BUNGALOWS, FUTURE CLASSICS and ESSENTIALS, which, upon finding out, personally made us want to get a style-setter bungalow ASAP and live there forever. The swag is strong with this one – CIFF has its own metro station, right in front of Bella center – as declared by its own page, Scandinavia’s largest congress, conference and exhibition centre. In short, you have an easy access to the latest fashion trends, can still show off the coat mentioned above and crash the party anytime.
or innovative fashion start-ups (you know our amazing VIA Design Vibbe and Kuus who have been In the Spotlight of FOCUS last year with their fresh AGURK. When at Revolver, don’t forget to pass by and give them love!). Best of all is that Revolver is only a 2-minute walk from Copenhagen Central Station, which means you might still feel your face by the time you arrive there, and wear your favourite paper-thin-but-fancy-asa-synonym-of-copulation coat. Revolver evolves on 3-4-5 of February and no crashing the party allowed – better register on their page (revolver.dk) first.

Text by Valeria Solonari Illustrations by Ilva Indrikova As I am writing this, the end of winter is theoretically just weeks away, and while it’s by far my least favorite season, it's just hard not to get all choked up on the idea of no more cozy sweaters and home-cooked comfort food. In an attempt to see past the minus double-digit temperatures already rising, here are a few of the things you should be determined to do by this season’s term
Keep a reverse bucket list. Every year starts the same. You make a New Year’s Resolution, you keep it up for about three weeks, and then you give up. But this year will be different. Because keeping up with the Kardashians with your resolution will be on your winter bucket list. A reverse bucket list is about keeping a list of all the great things you have already accomplished since the year’s start.
Ask a complete stranger out. Say at a concert or while waiting in line at Starbucks, whom you’ve never spoken to and have exchanged smiles with at most. Apparently it’s the month of love, so who knows what may come out of it.
Do a Nicolas Sparks movie madness. So speaking of love… Hours and hours of cheesy romance, filled with footage of Ryan Gosling, Channing Tatum and Liam Hemsworth is as cheesy as I allow myself to get during this time of the year.
Or not. Kiss someone in the pouring rain. For reference: watch The Notebook. Kiss someone in softly falling snow. For reference: watch Bridget Jones’s Diary. That’s all there is to it. Another one on the list: be shut up with a kiss!
Dress up for a mega babe night. Any excuse to dress up in an insanely gorgeous dress – we’re thinking massive cleavage or open backs, red lips, perfect nails, the works – works for us. Now all we need is a big event. Valentine’s is totally optional :).
39
Go to a 24-hour party. Berlin has the best ones, so we’ve been told, but I heard the concept is catching on in Copenhagen too.
Restart your series marathon on Netflix. For all the binge-watchers out there: this one is for you! You know like no one else how ultimately satisfying it is to order takeout, curl up under a blanket and take upon favorite TV-series after the long awaited winter finales. I for one have marked my calendar on the 11th of February when ‘ShondaLand’ returns (read: Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder).
Rent a cabin for a long weekend with friends. Think of this as your last winter break you can enjoy at the helms of immense fun!
Go camping in your own home. And if a cabin does not suit your wallet power, bring about indoor camping! A blanket and a stick will make a tent, and no digital devices should be allowed.
Say yes to everything for a day. Want to double that hamburger? YES. Want to go dancing tonight? YES. Buy those shoes? YES. Want to come over and vacuum my living room? NO YES. Another option on this list would be to lie about everything for a day. Your pick, who are we to judge??

“There’s a lot of facial hair out there” you might have noticed, if not now, at least last year in November. Trendy or not, moustaches and beards have taken over men’s faces, in an attempt to either participate in the Movember campaign or to experiment with their appearance. The aim behind the decision of some men to kiss their razors goodbye for a month, mostly in November, has more to do with raising awareness for the prostate cancer and less with looks. Movember started off in 2003 when two mates, Travis Garone and Luke Slattery, met up for a pint of beer in Melbourne, Australia, and the idea sparked. The moustache had all but disappeared from fashion trends and the question was if there was any chance they could bring it back. They found 30 guys to join the movement and the project raised not more, nor less than 0$. Disappointed or not, the crew decided to take things to the next level. Adam Garone stepped up to register the Movember Foundation and create a website and Justin Coghlan came on board to kickstart things in Queensland. In 2004, they managed to raise £21,184 and funds went to Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, a donation which was the largest single donation the PCFA had ever received. The campaigns in Denmark officially started in 2011, the year in which it was also ranked as one of the top 100 NGOs in the world. Through Movember funding, the world’s first Prostate Cancer Genome Mapping Project is completed, expanding the understanding of how prostate cancer works. 12 years later from its launch, Movember managed to raise
more than 685 mio. £ . In Denmark there were 5,342 registrations and a total of kr. 974.444 in amounts raised. We are proud to have had guys taking part in the Movember action in our Birk Campus, especially the BDE Students, of whom you’ll see photos on the next page. Growing a moustache and a beard can be really fun as well, especially if you don’t recognize yourself in the mirror anymore in the mornings. It can also be fun to experiment with moustache styles and let your facial-hair styling go (a little bit) wild. As a shout-out to all the guys reading this, we encourage you to take part in this action, because besides the cool-factor of moustaches, the message of the campaign is strong and raising awareness of health issues is always very important. If you haven’t joined this year, 2016 can be a great idea! "Sadly, when it comes to their health, too many men don’t talk, don’t take action and die too young. Now, as an organisation, we want to encourage men to take responsibility for all aspects of their health and to take action whenever necessary." says Sarah Coghlan, Country Director for UK. She also points out men do not include diseases in their regular conversations. Admitting weakness and seeking out help are both sore points for men; actions that bring out feelings of emasculation. The moustache symbol was chosen because of its associations with machismo and mettle. Don’t be afraid to grow a moustache and join the Mo’s!
