Staying
Healthy
on a Busy Schedule
Life can sometimes feel a little too jam-packed with work, errands, carpools, cooking dinner and more. When that happens, healthy habits often fall by the wayside in favor of convenience. Fast food can replace home cooked meals and exercise makes way for the television. Registered dietitians and authors Lyssie Lakatos and Tammy Lakatos Shames, who are also known as “The Nutrition Twins,” have advice for feeling good and staying healthy despite a busy schedule. Drink up: People often mistake thirst for hunger, prompting them to overeat. Keep seltzer, iced green tea or water with lime in the fridge. The next time you want a nosh between meals, drink a glass first and see what happens. Sneak in exercise: If it feels like too much of a task to get to the gym each day, sneak in exercise wherever you can. Take the stairs instead of the elevator at work or push your kids on the swings for an arm workout. Even if you walk around the neighborhood for 15 minutes, it counts. Just get moving! Simplify, simplify, simplify: Mornings tend to be hectic, so The Nutrition Twins get excited when they can eliminate something from their routine. That’s why they love Vitamints. They’re a vitamin and mint in one that can be taken anytime, anywhere even without food or water; it’s easy to just pop them in your bag or car and go. The twins like the Immune, Energy and Multi for Women varieties.
Family Features
Bite into some energy: You might think a sugary candy bar from the office vending machine will perk you up, but a healthy, balanced snack will keep you on your toes longer. Make sure your snack has a quality, high-fiber carbohydrate, like fresh fruit, oatmeal or whole-grain crispbread, for long lasting energy and a lean protein, such as a hardboiled egg or Greek yogurt, to help you feel satisfied. The two will work together to keep your energy up and your desire to visit the snack machine down. Sleep tight: Sleep deprivation slows your metabolism down and negatively affects your immune system. When you’re busy that’s the last thing you need. Set yourself a bedtime that’s eight hours before you have to wake up and start getting ready for bed 30 minutes prior to that. The last step is tough, but don’t bring your phone or computer to bed with you. Instead, pick up a book to help you relax and drift off to sleep.

Fun Activities
for Moms, Kids to Enjoy Together
Photos courtesy of Getty Images
Family Features
With warm weather and kids’ freedom from school, there are extra opportunities for moms and kids to spend more time together. Whether your children are toddlers or school age, it’s important to find fun ways to spend precious hours with one another.
Watch the magic of fireflies: Enjoy cool evening breezes, while watching the special magic fireflies bring to a backyard. Catch a few in a Mason jar, and then release them after the kids are tucked in for the night.
Here are a few activities those of all ages can enjoy: Put a twist on movie night: Summer blockbusters have families flooding theaters in droves. Pack the whole family in the car, pop some corn and catch a drive-in movie. It’s an old-fashioned experience every kid should enjoy at least once.
Pack a picnic: Take a picnic lunch on your next outdoor adventure. Keep it simple, portable and healthy with good old peanut butter and jelly with healthy, delicious side dishes like baby carrots, sliced bell peppers and Dole Fruit Squish’ems squeezable fruit pouches. From orchard to pouch, they are made with fresh apples from the USA, and are an easy on-the-go summer snack.
Blow bubbles for a crowd: Create a bubble station on your front porch and wait for the neighborhood kids to congregate. After all, there is just something so simple and nostalgic about bubbles that everyone loves
Play extreme tic-tac-toe: Make an easy craft project that can be enjoyed all summer long. Paint a tic-tac-toe board on an old beach towel, and then mark ten Frisbees with an X or O. Now, you’re ready to play Frisbee tic-tac-toe anywhere outdoors.
Take a hike: Spend time exploring nearby parks, lakes and arboretums with the kids. Pack plenty of water and healthy snacks, such as Dole Fruit Squish’ems, squeezable fruit pouches. Each serving has 60 calories and contains 20 percent of the daily value of vitamin C. Add an extra element of fun to your hike by going on a treasure hunt.
Keep them growing healthy: Pick a spot in the yard to create a small garden or plant a few vegetables in large pots. Those few moments caring for plants together each morning may just be the most precious ones of the day. To find out more about why kids ages 5-13 prefer Dole Fruit Squish’ems Apple and Apple Strawberry flavors over other brands, visit www.dole.com/fruitsquishems.

Akerman has mastered these simple tips to make it all work:
TIPS
Family Features
for Multi-Tasking Moms
Even the most skilled multi-tasking working woman knows keeping everything on track is tough. From work schedules to social calendars to finding time for yourself, it’s easy to get stuck in a rut with a chaotic routine. Day to day is a challenge enough and that holds true for moms across America, even famous ones like actress Malin Akerman.
• Don’t Skip Breakfast. It’s important for the entire family to start the day off right. Breakfast gives you energy for the day and keeps you from caving into all the bad options when hunger hits mid-morning. • Ready for Anything. Because of her hectic schedule, Akerman stocks the fridge with nutritious snacks that are easy to grab and go. Her favorite treat is new Müller FrütUp Mango, a creamy yogurt topped with whipped fruit mousse which she describes as pure bliss. • Take a Stroll: Akerman always tries to stay active. She loves going on long evening walks with her husband and son.
Akerman admits the joy of motherhood and all of the increased activity that comes with it makes her balancing act tough, especially with her new role on the small screen. The ABC “Trophy Wife” star wants to make the right choices without sacrificing time, taste or nutrition, while savoring every moment with her baby and husband.
• Play Guessing Games: Akerman likes to keep her muscles guessing, so she is always changing up her exercise routine. Right now, her favorite exercises are cycling class or pilates.
“Now more than ever, I appreciate the little delights in each day. For me, that’s everything from getting to spend extra time with my family to enjoying my favorite snack during a break on set,” said Akerman. “I fell in love with Müller yogurt because it’s a delicious, nutritious snack that’s easy to grab and go.”
• Buddy-up: She really enjoys exercising outside in the summer. Akerman just grabs a girlfriend and goes for a hike. She loves that it keeps both of them on track. For a behind-the-scenes look at Akerman’s daily routine, summer tips for a successful balancing act and a full line-up of tasty yogurt flavors, visit: www.Facebook.com/mullerquaker.

Ways to
Love Your Body
By Carrie Myers Smith
you’re supposed to be the first female president, but you’ll never know because you’re too busy obsessing about your abs!
Get real
Did you know that most of the images you see on television, movies and magazines aren’t even real? A model for a magazine cover goes through hours of professional hair and make-up, has professional stylists, top photographers who know her "best side," professional lighting, and that’s all before the chosen photo goes to a company where they remove stray hairs, wrinkles, blemishes and "extra" curves. Sometimes Model A’s head is stuck onto Model B’s body. What you see is totally made up!
While many of us have an easy time showering other people with love, we find that Cupid has yet to hit us with the "body love" arrow. Don’t wait for Cupid! Begin today to start appreciating, accepting and yes, even loving your body.
Stop picking yourself apart
Let’s face it: No matter how close-to-perfection body you have (and just what is the perfect body anyway?), chances are, there is something you would change about it if you could. Even celebrities and models who have been stamped with the media’s "perfect body" rating have parts they dislike – their feet, their hands, their ears – and they don’t necessarily have high self-esteem either! Rather than pick your body apart, look at your body as a whole (and read the next point…)
Consider the marvelous functions of your body
There are millions of microscopic functions that go on in our bodies every day, and you don’t even have to think about them. They just happen! Unfortunately, it often takes a crisis or a tragedy, such as a brush with death, a go-around with a disease, or a debilitating accident for some women to realize that their bodies weren’t so bad to begin with and that their body hang-ups were a big waste of time. Don’t let that be the case with you! How much time are you spending each day worrying about your weight, your body shape, the size of your rear? What could you be doing during that time? Maybe 14 FOCUS of Virginia 2014
And it’s not just fashion magazines that are creating a fantasy. Most of today’s "fitness" magazines are following suit. On top of airbrushing and computer generating their models, fitness magazines now need to audition their models to be sure they’re strong enough to just do basic exercises! Muscles are even airbrushed in! It’s time to get real! Find real role models who emanate the qualities you desire. Educate yourself about what really goes on "behind the scenes." And realize that no one naturally "glows" the way those models in the magazines do!
Change your inner dialogue
It’s been said that we teach others how to treat us. If we believe that, the message that comes across to others is that we are not worth being liked, loved, or treated with respect. Most of it comes from what we’re not even saying. Choose to believe that you are worth taking care of and that you have the right to be respected and treated with dignity – and act like it!
Take care of your body
Diets, pills, quick-fixes, binging, not exercising, over-exercising, all these things disrespect one of the greatest gifts you have been given – your body! You only get one per lifetime, so give it the respect it deserves. You will not only feel better, but you just might become someone else’s role model!

The all-new C-Class heralds a new chapter in the Mercedes- Benz success story and sets new standards in the premium midrange class. Thanks to an intelligent lightweight design concept boasting weight savings of up to 220 lbs, excellent aerodynamics and new, economical engines, the C-Class establishes new benchmarks in its class. A host of new assistance systems offer safety of the highest standard, while a new suspension, optionally air-sprung, provides for exemplary ride and driving comfort as well as nimble and agile handling. In terms of appearance the new C-Class adopts a progressive approach with its clear yet emotional design and its highclass interior. Many other innovations and interior touches underscore the sedan's luxurious comfort and refined sportiness. In all, the perceived quality of the new C-Class feels like an "upgrade to a higher class of travel." The C-Class is the top-selling model series from Mercedes-Benz. Sales of the preceding model, which was launched in 2007, total over 2.4 million. The new C-Class offers sensuous and clear design and a host of technical innovations as well as a comprehensive scope of standard equipment and exemplary emission and fuel consumption values. The U.S. market launches with two C-Class models: C300 4MATIC with a 2.0L turbocharged direct-injection in-line fourcylinder engine with preliminary power figures of 235 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque and a C400 4MATIC with a 3.0L turbocharged direct-injection V6 at 329 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. 18 FOCUS of Virginia 2014
"Mercedes at its best - that's the new CClass, which sets new standards for the mid-range segment on many fronts," says Prof. Dr Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. "It is characterized by an emotional yet clear design which is continued in the high-quality and modern interior. Its efficient and high-performance engineering provides the basis for a high standard of driving enjoyment." Ola Källenius, Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing Mercedes-Benz Cars, adds: "The new C-Class embodies Mercedes-Benz's claim ‘The best or nothing' in uncompromising style. This is immediately apparent when encountering our new Saloon for the first time, as it creates the impression that one is sitting in a higher class of automobile. I am sure that our customers will be delighted by the high-class appeal and agility of the new C-Class." The C-Class has grown to take account of people's increasing average height. With a 3 inch increase in the wheelbase (112 inches) compared with the previous model, the vehicle is 3.7 inches longer (184 inches) and 1.6 inches wider (71 inches). The resultant additional space benefits first and foremost the rear passengers, who now travel in even greater comfort. The new C-Class also increases its trunk capacity to 17 cubic feet.
On a visual level, the new C-Class represents a bold departure from its predecessor. Its striking, dynamic design exudes sensuous clarity and arouses emotions. Nature was a source of inspiration for the new sedan's aesthetically sensuous lines and surfaces, whose harmony and dynamism create an immediate effect. The designers have created minimalist, purist forms for the C-Class which emphasizes its intelligent technology and engineering. The clearly defined surfaces deliberately display a degree of tension, lending them a muscular and sensuous character. Precise lines and sculptural surfaces create lively light and shade effects. The Mercedes-Benz designers have styled the interior on a level which is rarely encountered even in higher vehicle categories. This applies to the carefully chosen high-class materials and their pleasant touch and feel as well as the precision of the finely crafted details. The interior also embodies a new design idiom which combines sensuousness and clarity perfectly with dynamic sportiness and contributes to the quality feel of the interior. The interior design demonstrates a bold new approach by Mercedes-Benz. Here the designers combine in accomplished style the architecture of Mercedes- Benz sports cars with a totally new center console featuring flowing lines. A large one-piece center console panel performs an elegant sweep from the center air vents to the armrest. These seamless clear-cut lines create a sense of open space and convey a thrillingly purist and modern feel.
As Gorden Wagener, Vice President Design Daimler AG, notes: "The new CClass showcases automotive passion by way of a contemporary design idiom. Progressive and emotional highlights underscore the ground-breaking design style of the new C-Class and demonstrate sensual clarity. The new C-Class interprets modern luxury on a new level." Even though many driver's and passenger’s may not consciously notice NVH (noise, vibration, harshness), Mercedes-Benz has devoted painstaking attention to optimizing the noise characteristics of the interior; including the blower, power windows, seat adjustment functions and many other actuation and operating noises.
The suspension on the new C-Class is a totally new development. It provides for nimble and agile handling that makes driving a great pleasure on winding roads while also offering the highest standard of ride comfort in the segment. An optimized multi-link independent rear suspension with 5-link concept ensures unsurpassed wheel location qualities and supreme straight-line stability. Alternatively, the new C-Class is the first vehicle in its segment that can be fitted with an air suspension (AIRMATIC) on the front and rear axles. Thanks to electronically controlled, continuous variable damping at the front and rear, it offers outstanding road roar and tire vibration characteristics even with the vehicle loaded. The driver can use the AGILITY SELECT switch to choose between the various characteristics: "Comfort", "ECO", "Sport" and "Sport+." The additional "Individual" option enables drivers to configure their vehicle according to their own wishes. AIRMATIC also features all-round selfleveling for optimum ride comfort even when the vehicle is loaded. As a result, the suspension responds more sensitively to steering movements and allows a sporty, agile driving style. Mercedes-Benz has undertaken systematic development and substantial improvements in the new C-Class. This applies in particular to the comfort, performance, efficiency and air of quality; thus contributing to a feel-good atmosphere highlighting the status of this cultivated sedan in duly self-assured style.

Renowned designer Paloma Picasso creates a stunning new jewelry collection inspired by the olive branch as a symbol of peace and abundance. The new collection, Paloma’s Olive Leaf, captures elements from the olive groves surrounding her home in Morocco, a place of serenity, and also represents a link to her name. “ Paloma means dove in Spanish,” she says. “ We are all familiar with the dove carrying an olive branch as a peace offering. The jewelry I’ve created pays tribute both to the messenger’s noble mission and gardens as a refuge of peace and tranquility.” 20 FOCUS of Virginia 2014
The collection is sumptuous yet delicate, a garden of precious metals shot with gemstones. A bib necklace traces the tender leaves and stems in an intricate, openwork pattern of brilliant green tsavorites and 18 karat gold. This elegant profusion of leaves forges pendants in gleaming gold or sterling silver, as well as one-of-a-kind rings in 18 karat white gold and diamonds. Gold cuffs echo the ancient olive wreathes that crowned the glorious and victorious. The designer places beautiful and colorful gemstones among leafy branches of gold or silver. Rubellite and green peridot cabochons are entwined in ring settings of 18 karat gold with diamonds. Pear-shaped rubellites accent luxuriant drop earrings of gold and sparkling diamond leaves. There are also earrings with perfect ovals of translucent blue topaz suspended boldly from little gold leaves. Tiffany’s skilled artisans hand cut and set each stone to unleash maximum color and light. Paloma’s Olive Leaf is wonderfully fluid and moves with an easy grace dazzling in the light like leaves lifted on a gentle breeze or flowers dancing under the sun. Paloma Picasso introduced her first collection of jewels for Tiffany & Co. in 1980. Her use of colorful gemstones, which brought fiery orange opals and shocking pink tourmalines into fashion, and her use of “ Scribbles,” “ Graffiti” and her signature “ X” instantly established her as jewelry design’s newest star. With her unerring eye for glamour and her informed sense of personal style, she continues to create—and Tiffany continues to craft—exuberant and visually stunning jewels favored by the world’s most stylish women.

Making it By Kristy Whershaw
Although the journey hasn’t been easy for this young talented couple, it has been rewarding. The team started writing stage plays five years ago, and to date already has three plays to their credit; “The Devine Inheritance”, “If We Make It Through December” and “What’s A Sistah 2 Do”. With this number of accomplishments within a short period of time, it is apparent why their time is so thin, but if Ford, Firestone and Good Year could all propel to great success, then why not them. Within the last 15 years, opportunities for playwrites have expanded. Tyler Perry has been instrumental in opening avenues for up and coming visionaries to embark on the journey of playwriting and filmmaking. It’s like the old cliché says, “don’t reinvent the wheel”, just create a quality, marketable product that people want, would you agree? Well, that’s just what the Roberts’ did. Not only did they create a marketable product, but a high quality production, with good talent and a respectable message. A production the entire family could enjoy and audiences from across Virginia can attest to it. The process started with auditions for local, talented actors and vocalists, with the ability to act. Word saturated the entertainment communities around Virginia about a new play, providing an avenue for those wanting to expand their music and acting careers. After several months of auditions, selection was narrowed down to a cast of some of the most talented actors and vocalists in the area. Soon the word spread and it seemed to fire up an entire city. As social media outlets like Facebook and Instagram began to create a buzz about the show, the anticipation grew stronger than the directors or cast could have ever imagined. The anticipation birthed a new generation of theater goers who became excited about characters such as: Inez, Meredith, Monique, Jerald and Lenard. “What’s A Sistah 2 Do” finally gained the traction it needed, and was well on its way to becoming the main attraction. Stacey and Jeremie are both from large families that inspire and support the concept of the play. Jeremie, a recording artist hailing from Texas, met Stacey, an entertainment executive from Virginia nearly nine years ago. Facing some challenges in life, the couple needed a way to help alleviate some of the frustration they were dealing with. They decided to make their lives transparent by bringing their personal life to the stage. They knew that they were not the only ones facing challenges. It didn’t take long for them to realize that anyone who has ever gone through something could relate to their story. During rehearsals, challenges arose and the couple was faced with situations that were brewing from inside the very thing they created and loved. They discovered very quickly how brutal, hurtful and cut throat the entertainment industry can be, even on a local level. Renowned actors, Cedric Pendleton and Danny Clay, whose accolades include stage and screen, were brought in to provide the play with the structure and marketing support it needed to build a sustainable audience. Cast members began pairing off and leaving the production because they did not like the way the production was being run. Tension was high, but Jeremie and Stacey were prepared, standing their ground, while still managing the production by the motto of treating people the way they wanted to be treated. 22 FOCUS of Virginia 2014

Interesting enough they have their hands full with everyday tasks and being a family with five active children. I got an opportunity to sit with husband and wife team, Jeremie and Stacey Roberts who are also the writer and director of the new hit stage play, “What’s A Sistah 2 Do”. After a year of rehearsals and production, the duo is now preparing to take this exciting stage play on the road again this summer.
Jeremie and Stacey Roberts
Anyone who has ever started a business knows that success does not come without making sacrifices and paying dues. Debbie Allen said it best in the opening credits of the 80’s television series FAME, “You got big dreams, you want fame? Well, fame costs, and right here is where you start paying…in sweat.” Putting together a quality production is a substantial investment. Operating with a limited production budget often meant that Jeremie and Stacey had to wear multiple hats, serving as directors, writers, actors, set builders, babysitters, stylists or whatever capacity needed. The couple didn’t mind sacrificing the time and energy needed to bring their stage plays to life. When you love something and you believe in it, there are risks you must take, which most people won’t. The reward came through the praise of each audience performed in front of. The support gave the producing duo the confidence needed to keep pushing forward. I had the opportunity to witness the manifestation of all the hard work and sacrifice when I attended opening night of “What’s A Sistah 2 Do” at the Henrico Theatre in Richmond. This was the first of three shows featuring Cedric Pendleton, from the cast of Tyler Perry’s hit series, “The Haves and the Have Nots. The Henrico Theatre was packed, and as I sat there in the middle of the theatre watching and listening to the audience’s reactions, I could clearly see what all of the anticipation was about. Inez, played by Jeremie, put quite a spin on his character as Madea’s cousin, while bringing laughter and a serious message to the stage. The chemistry between the cast was magnificent and every actor gave a star studded performance. The cast breathed life into their characters’ personalities like they had been playing these roles for years, but it was just opening night. I knew the show creators had a hit production on their hands by the way the audience responded. It would be just a matter of time before it all came together for them. Following the show, Jeremie and Stacey introduced the cast from Richmond Virginia, and what a cast it is. It was even more fascinating when Jeremie and Stacey appeared on stage to give final remarks. The couple shared their testimony of losing the inspiration behind the character, “Inez”, Jeremie’s mother, who died of cancer. Six months later, while the play was still in production, he also lost his grandmother. Jeremie wears his mother’s dress and a few of her personal items in the show. This task was most difficult during his time of grief. This couple has faced all types of challenges and difficulties on the journey to make their dreams come true. Even while coping with family, death and a lack of funding, they somehow manage to keep this play alive. Talking to this dynamic couple I could see their passion, strong faith and belief in what they do. It just goes to prove that in show business the show must go on.

When it comes to natural hair, women of color from all across the country are going back to their roots. Natural hair is becoming a part of the hottest fashion trends. Natural hair shows, products and creativity are steadily increasing in demand to keep up with the trend. Just check out some of the YouTube videos getting thousands, even millions, of hits and social media sites like Facebook and Instagram are providing great images and ideas from do-it-yourselfers and professionals. Finding the right style is just one side of it. Managing natural hair can be very frustrating and finding the right products can be a hassle, but when you finish the process it can lift a load off your shoulders, and anyone with natural hair can agree.
Photography by Damany Mayfield
LaTresha “Tree” Sayles, the owner of Tree Naturals Inc located in Richmond, Virginia, decided to go natural and after trying so many different store brands of products, she decided to try and find a simpler solution or product that would give her hair the perfect balance to maintain, control and moisturize it in its natural state; something that would keep it healthy and strong while still allowing her to wear it in any style she designed. After several attempts, she finally found the right combination of Asianinspired products that, when mixed together, provided her with just the right balance she needed. It wasn’t long before her friends and other natural hair growers began to take notice and ask, "what was it that she was using to make her hair so beautiful?"And of course she couldn’t wait to tell them about it and share the new product she had made. After all, she did receive her Bachelor’s of Marketing from Virginia State University and a Master’s of Business Administration (with a concentration in Health Services Administration) from Strayer University. The timing couldn’t have been better to start a business with the simple idea that launched the beginning of Tree Naturals. All it took was starting out with some samples for those who were interested.
Today, Tree Naturals has grown into a complete hair care line with over 15 hair care and body spa products developed and manufactures by hand, and each recipe is carefully formulated using only the finest botanicals, plant oils and emollient ingredients to cater to all types of natural hair (straight, kinky, curls and waves). They also have a Zen product formulated specifically for men’s hair, beards and skin, and products perfect for children’s hair and skin as well. Davia Archer cut off all of her hair, went natural, and joined Tree Naturals as their first natural hair model. With a degree in Public Relations, Davia provided the brand with its first photographic exposure, which catapulted and established the company’s identity using social media, while educating women on feeling beautiful with their natural hair. Tree Naturals uses YouTube video tutorials to teach women how to use Tree Natural products, and shows them how to purchase the products that are right for their hair.

Summer
Trends
By Robert Salvatore
If one wants to pull out an adventurous look, luckily the latest industry predictions for this summer show that designers have opted for colors on the opposite side of the color spectrum. This summer is in for vivid, bright, and lively colors. So how can anyone go wrong throwing on a amethyst ring, or a aquamarine one. Even a black diamond ring can throw off anyone’s outfit. Colors are in for this season. Citrine earrings, blue topaz earrings, aquamarine earrings, pink sapphires, and smoky topaz earrings can really brighten up your wardrobe, and you will definitely fall into this season’s latest trend. Gems are also always enriched with deep and vivid colors, and all of these mentioned colors and jewelry are available. Remember bright colors are going to make you pop, and there is no problem looking dazzling this summer. Another popular trend this season, are the neutral colors that play the backbone for all other colors to play on. These nude hues leave an honest vibe that makes anyone relaxed, calm, and approachable. Even gold is trending in this style. Any type of gold chain, ring, or earrings, can give someone a relaxed style, and also look very trendy for this season. Smoky Topaz earrings would be a great example to following this trend. The light brown gives a haze to one’s look, looking fresh and ready for spring! You can also mix up your look with a garnet and diamond mixed earring, giving you a fresh look, which is parallel to the neutral colors giving off this season.
Going for a subtler look? No one can go wrong having a white diamond ring. A regular diamond can give off your presence in a classy and even a flirtatious way. If diamonds are not your thing, throw on a classic pearl necklace. Everyone should have at least one pearl necklace in their jewelry box. Having a simple necklace around your neck won’t do you wrong either. Speaking of patterns, big bold prints such as tropical themes and jungle prints are back. This year is no exception. Color is back, and black is out, at least for now. Last year, brown was the new black, and this year it is muted silver and grey that's all the rage when you want to opt for a non-color. What about shoes, you ask? Pumps are HOT! Not that they ever really went out of style, but they certainly came second to the flip flop, the ballet slipper, and other such cutesy flat footwear, along with the rounded toe pump. Also noteworthy is what's in store for later on in the season. This season proves to be an interesting and eclectic mix of styles. This may seem contradictory, but the feminine nature of the season's styles pulls from flowing fabrics and cuts and seems to just use a hint of metal accessory - and it's a hit!

STYLE & COLOR SECRETS The Zac Posen Spring collection evokes whimsical elegance. With flowery prints and delicate chiffon, the innovative collection puts a fanciful touch on summer. For his collection, Zac Posen envisioned rich, vibrant hair color to make the runway looks truly pop. John Frieda® International Creative Consultant Harry Josh brought this vision to life, using John Frieda® Precision Foam Colour to enhance models’ shades with saturated colour and shine that complemented Zac Posen’s spring pieces. An essential part of the runway look, the hair colour brought vibrancy and brightness to Posen’s singular designs. Harry Josh chose Precision Foam Colour for its salon-quality coverage and expert colourist-selected shades, using tones that closely matched the models’ own hair colours, serving to enrich their shades rather than completely change them. In order to enhance the richness of the colour, John Frieda® Global Creative Consultant Luigi Murenu melded two looks into one – creating a graphic style in the front and a soft wave in the back. Drawing inspiration from polished wood, Murenu channeled screen sirens from old Hollywood and described the look as “chic, elegant and timeless.” 32 FOCUS of Virginia 2014

Harry’s Backstage Tip: “The moment before the show begins is filled with nervous energy – then the music starts, the lights beam down and all eyes are on the first model. The last thing anyone wants to see is dull, washed-out colour. Apply Precision Foam Colour 24 hours before your big debut to get salon-quality richness and shine that will make you the center of attention.” Luigi’s Backstage Tip: “Frizz-Ease® Hair Serum Original Formula is a Fashion Week essential. Not only do I use it on damp hair to tame frizz, but I also use it right before models walk the runway. This added touch keeps styles smooth and extra shiny and makes the model’s hair colour look radiant,” Murenu reveals. To create the style seen on the runway, Luigi Murenu used the following steps: • Step 1: To keep the crown frizz-free, apply a dimesized amount of Frizz-Ease® Hair Serum Original Formula, smoothing hair downward from the top of the head to below the ear. • Step 2: Next apply Frizz-Ease® Curl Reviver Styling Mousse evenly through hair and brush to uniformly distribute product. • Step 3: Create a severe middle part and blow dry completely, brushing hair back and away from the face to make the hair at the crown flat and smooth. • Step 4: With a 1” curling iron, create a wave by wrapping small sections of hair twice around the barrel. Make sure to stop before reaching the nape of the neck in order to keep the crown flat. Brush hair out to create one uniform wave. • Step 5: Follow with Frizz-Ease® Moisture Barrier Firm Hold Hairspray to keep style in place.

When it comes to your creativity and passion, what sets you apart from everyone else? How does it feel when someone appreciates your talent, your merit and your hard work bringing to life your vision? When your inspiration comes out through a series of paint strokes, with colors and striking lines against a blank canvas, and the feeling hits you that your artistic form of expression reveals the passion that burns inside you? After all, your family and friends have recognized your talent for such a long time. Once you began selling pieces of your art, they suggested that you think about showcasing your talent at a few museums or displaying your work at art shows. While you were having these thoughts, Jennifer Kirby and her longtime friend James Bassfield were thinking about opening up an art center that would support the local artists throughout the city of Richmond. Jennifer, who has a passion for mosaic art herself, came up with the idea for an art center about twelve years ago when she needed help to get through some difficult times. With little to no financing on the horizon, Jennifer and James gathered a few of their friends to make an investment that would change their lives and the lives of many artists. But after forging ahead with a great idea and selecting a location, one by one each of the investors pulled out of the deal. This left Jennifer and James standing alone and about to make one of the most important decisions in their lives. Not knowing the outcome, Jennifer and James kept looking forward. Today a lot of gifted and talented artists can appreciate the decision they made back then. The art center Jennifer envisioned now houses works by over 225 of the most talented artists throughout the Atlantic Region in a 25,000-square-foot space located at Broad and Staple Mills Road. The artists showcased are from all walks of life, and the collection has grown to include one-of-a-kind, original collector pieces from fine arts, crafts, painting, photography, jewelry and sculpture. Artists from around the world come to showcase their art, and special events are hosted to view these collections. It’s an art center in full bloom and full of prosperity, and there is room for everyone—even if you’re an aspiring artist who wishes to take classes to enhance your skill, to relax or to get your artistic expression out. Classes are currently taught by a professional artist whose works are displayed in museums across the country. We are all artists in our own way, because we all create visual images in our minds that stimulate and transform us. Art is a way of life because it says something about who and what we are. Finding the right piece of art that speaks visually without saying a word is an ideal shared by many, and everyone can find something that speaks to them at the Crossroads Art Center.

Vacation Essentials Even the most experienced travelers have arrived at their vacation destination only to realize the camera or sunglasses are still sitting on the kitchen counter at home. There is no worse feeling than leaving an essential item behind, causing you stress when you should be enjoying R&R. Sure, there are those who subscribe to the theory anything can be bought at your destination. But who wants to waste valuable time at the local drug store when you could be on the slopes or at the beach? Start your trip by creating a packing list of essentials. Then you can fly off to paradise knowing everything you need is right in your suitcase where it belongs. Here are a few ideas to get you started: Toiletries • The two most important toiletry items are a toothbrush and toothpaste. Select toothpaste, such as ARM & HAMMER™ Sensitive Whitening, that whitens your teeth while you’re away. Available in travel size, it’s convenient to pack. • Caring for your hair requires shampoo, conditioner, a hairbrush, comb and styling supplies. If your trip includes an airplane flight, make sure bottled liquids are no bigger than 3 ounces and are sealed inside a zip top bag, for your carry-on items. • Other essentials include sunscreen, mosquito repellant, deodorant, soap, shaving supplies, moisturizer and lip balm. Travel Essentials • Always travel with the essentials, such as your passport, driver’s license, itinerary, maps, membership cards, insurance information and travel confirmations. • A guidebook or two is also helpful. Purchase a pocket-sized edition with a good map to take on your trip. Look less like a tourist by flagging important pages in advance. • Everyone needs one good suitcase, but also bring along a backpack or crossbody bag for daytime touring and collapsible tote bag for souvenir shopping. Don’t forget to throw toothpaste in your daytime bag, such as ARM & HAMMER™ Sensitive Multi-Protection, to freshen up during long days of touring, and to protect teeth against tartar build-up. 38 FOCUS of Virginia 2014

• Today’s savvy traveler will need a laptop or tablet, camera, extra memory cards, music player, headphones and, of course, chargers for all your devices. Snacks • No matter where you’re headed on vacation, snacks are always a great item to bring along. They cut down on food costs, keep kids happy and help everyone stay healthy. So, pack a small tote with trail mix, granola, energy bars, fresh fruit and crackers. • If you plan to indulge in ice cream or other frosty treats, pack toothpaste for sensitive teeth, such as ARM & HAMMER™ Sensitive Freshening, and your mouth will feel cool and refreshed. • Bring an empty water bottle with you on every trip to stay hydrated. Other items to pack for the hotel room are juices, teabags, gourmet coffee, bottled coffee drinks and powdered drink mixes. A great packing list will help you to stay organized while getting ready for your trip. It also ensures that everything you brought on vacation makes it back into your bag for the trip home.

“Age 85 is a bad time to go broke,” says expert retirement planner Jeff Gorton. Personal savings, various investments and, yes, Social Security may prove to be short of what you’d expected. “Budgeting how you spend money before retirement can often be a misleading measurement of how you’ll actually spend it during retirement,” says Gorton, a veteran Certified Public Accountant and Certified Financial Planner™, and head of Gorton Financial Group. “Spending 40 hours a week at work not only earns you a paycheck, it also keeps you from spending money on more vacations, matinee screenings at the movie theater, extra trips to the mall or shopping online. You need to be exceedingly realistic in your planning, and the five years before retirement are actually the most crucial in solidifying post-employment stability.” To prevent a rude awakening during retirement, Gorton makes certain his clients start with a written income plan (WIP). He reviews the benefits and importance of this “living document”: • A comprehensive list of life expenses paints a clearer picture. For a 65-year-old married couple today, there is a 72 percent chance that at least one spouse will live to age 85; a 45 percent chance that one will live to age 90, and an 18 percent chance that one will reach age 95, according a recent study from the CDC National Center for Health Statistics. You may not think of listing things like pet care, yard maintenance, and regular visits to salons or spas. But if you enjoy those services now, you may want them during retirement, and you might find that you underestimated the real cost of maintaining your desired lifestyle. And, that’s not including gifts to children and grandchildren!
• The forecast of a two-legged stool. A WIP helps you appreciate the reliability of retirement income. What sources of income do you anticipate having? Traditionally, retirement funding has been viewed as a “three-legged stool,” implying a balance between Social Security, retirement plans and savings/investments. As the baby boom generation ages, Social Security benefits may decrease — and the age at which an individual can collect benefits may increase. Changes in employment may affect retirement plans. As a result, the third leg of the stool, savings/investments, may become even more important. • Who is authoring your WIP? As with all written documents, you must always consider the source. What you may not realize is that a financial planner is liable to have a stake in selling you a financial product. Just like a retailer may have an incentive to move certain brands of products, many planners are incentivized to have you invest in specific financial vehicles from major institutions. What plan works best for you? Seek advice from an expert who isn’t trying to sell you something, such as an independent firm. “If you don’t have a written income plan, then you’re just hoping things will work out,” Gorton says. Jeff Gorton is a Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Financial Planner™ specializing in individual tax and retirement planning. He is also an Investment Advisor Representative under Alphastar Capital Management, an SEC Registered Investment Advisor, and has a life and health insurance license. Gorton works with individuals and their families to create and protect their financial legacies. He specializes in working with retirees in the areas of tax planning, benefits, retirement planning, estate planning and safe money techniques. He received his BBA in Accounting from the University of Oklahoma. Gorton previously worked for 10 years as the Chief Financial Officer for a large retail organization, overseeing their accounting, benefits and 401(k) retirement plans.

Avoid Moving Scams By John Bisney
Memorial Day marks the beginning of the traditional moving season, which runs through Labor Day. But unfortunately, not all of the estimated 37 million Americans who change residences during 2012 will have a smooth move. A few, in fact, will almost certainly have their worldly possessions “held hostage” by unsavory types known in the professional moving industry as rogue operators -- imposters who are often really criminals. The harm they cause can range from annoying to tragic. Such self-styled “movers,” hiding behind professional-looking websites that mask their phony operations, usually don’t live up to their promises. And as consumers continue to transition away from the Yellow Pages to shopping for services online, they frequently fail to realize that hiring a legitimate mover requires some checking. Immediately snapping up a low price online is fine when looking for a DVD – but don’t forget that when you move, in simple terms, you’re inviting people you don’t really know to pack up everything you own in a locked truck and drive away. One of the most common scenarios has these con artists holding trailers of household goods hostage unless the customer pays an exorbitant fee. Or claiming that the items suddenly weigh more than they did when loaded -- and so will now cost substantially more to deliver. It’s the last thing a customer needs -- relocating can often be a hectic and stressful life transition said to rank with losing a loved one or a job. During such times, it’s no wonder consumers may not be as careful as they should be when choosing a mover. Yet taking just a few minutes to check out your mover will almost always prevent such headaches. Here are five tips to help you avoid the bad guys: 44 FOCUS of Virginia 2014
1. Be wary of “guaranteed” estimates over the phone or Internet; instead, get at least three written in-home estimates. Show the mover everything you intend to take, including items in the attic, basement, garage, storage areas, shed, yard, etc. to ensure an accurate estimate. 2. Browse through a prospective mover’s website thoroughly. Make sure you have a physical address and a phone number. Ask to visit the facility if you have concerns. 3. Be suspicious of carriers seeking large down payments, and never sign any blank forms. 4. Take valuables, such as coins, jewelry, photographs, rare collectibles and important papers with you. 5. If you’re moving between states, your mover under federal law must give you copies of three documents at the time of the estimate: the “Your Rights and Responsibilities” and “Ready to Move?” brochures, and information on the arbitration program the mover must participate in. Read them carefully.
Finally, if you’re moving locally or within the same state, check to see whether the company you’re considering is a member of a state moving association (more than half the states have such organizations) or of the American Moving & Storage Association, the industry’s national non-profit trade association. If you’re moving between states (or within California), make sure your mover displays the ProMover logo. AMSA created the ProMover certification in 2008 as the moving industry’s “seal of approval” to give consumers a way to easily separate reputable, professional movers from con artists out to make a quick buck at their expense. To earn this designation, participating AMSA members undergo an annual screening that includes a review of any felony convictions of the company’s owners, officers or majority stockholders regarding matters over which the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), the Surface Transportation Board (STB) or any state consumer protection agency has jurisdiction; verification of company ownership with the appropriate state corporation commission; and a review of each applicant’s website for improper advertising. Each new applicant must also complete a signatory agreement attesting it will comply with FMCSA and STB regulations and uphold the AMSA Code of Ethics. The ProMoverSM logo stands for a set of basic, honest business principles -- a distinctive, stylized “M” that at a glance gives customers the confidence and comfort of knowing they and their cherished possessions aren’t being taken for a ride. By following these simple steps, consumers can easily avoid the problems that often accompany doing business with someone who is mover in name only.

Meals
the Hawaiian Way
The longer, sunny days of summer offer the perfect opportunity to get together with friends and family for flavorful meals from the grill. To host a get-together the Hawaiian way – where all of your friends, family and neighbors feel special – focus on a few well-chosen elements to make even the most spontaneous gathering seem like a carefully orchestrated event. Start with the buns The most experienced grill chefs know selecting the right bun is just as important as what goes inside. King’s Hawaiian, the family-owned company known for its original Hawaiian sweet bread products, offers a lineup of Hamburger Buns, Sandwich Buns and Rolls to please burgerloyalists and slider-connoisseurs alike. Serve-up scrumptious fillings Once you have a great bun, there are endless ways to fill them. Try a light, fluffy and sweet bread to complement savory grilled burgers. Soft and sweet dinner rolls make the perfect pick for sliders. These small buns are great for grilled mini burgers or for something more exotic, such as this recipe for Hawaiian-style Aloha Chicken Sliders. For an added touch, quickly toast the hamburger buns and rolls on the grill for just a few seconds to create an irresistible combination of crispiness and sweetness. For other great summertime recipes, visit www.KingsHawaiian. com/recipes. Provide delicious drinks and appetizers While you’re tending to the grill, keep your hungry guests happy with appetizers and beverages. Serve a classic spinach dip in a hollowed out sweet round bread. Treat them to tropical beverages like the ever-popular Mai Tai or the specialty of the islands, POG, made from passion fruit, orange, and guava juices.

First on the
List
By Rebecca Pratt
You’re a teacher, volunteer, business person, and parent. You’ve been up since 5am, made breakfast, packed lunches, cleaned the house, chauffeured the neighborhood kids, helped with homework, read bedtime stories, and finished extra work from the office. It’s 11:30... You’re exhausted. And, in about five-and-a-half hours you’ll begin the whole 24-hour cycle…again. If you find yourself saying ‘Stop the merry-go-round, I want to get off!’ you’re not alone. Most of us—especially women, but men too (hey, there are reasons that men die younger than women)—have at some time found ourselves at the bottom of the heap when it comes to taking care of our needs. The problem with that is that if we don’t take care of ourselves, sooner or later we won’t be of much use to anyone else—or to ourselves. Just as the airline attendant tells you to put on your own oxygen mask in an emergency before helping a child with theirs, you must take care of your own basic needs before you can attend to the needs of others. What’s more, being busy is not necessarily the same as being productive with meaningful activity. (Do the workaholics you know really accomplish that much more in proportion to the time they invest?) If “putting yourself first” (a common admonition) sounds too selfish or too hard, try something simpler: put yourself on an equal footing with those you love and tend to. Do you insist that they get enough sleep? Start making that a priority for yourself too. Do you give them time for fun and socializing with friends? Then you do the same! Remember Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs: human beings must meet their basic needs before they can move on to higher-level goals. Since most of us already know that we should take care of ourselves—but often have trouble figuring out how to do it, here are some guidelines for getting there: • Preserve your physical health with adequate sleep, exercise, and nutrition. • Value your emotional health as much as the physical, with a support system of friends and a willingness to laugh—especially at yourself. • Schedule fun activities on a regular basis—it’s just as important to plan pleasure as it is to plan work. • Identify “busy behaviors” (or people) that drain your time and energy but aren’t really important, then dump ‘em, or at least minimize their hold on you. • Kill two birds with one stone, combining family time with exercise, for example, which benefits everyone involved. • Try to look at the problems in your life with new eyes to find solutions. If you’re a new mom, for instance, see if you can trade childcare with another new mom to get some time for yourself. • Learn to say “No!” Your “yes” is valuable and should not be automatic. Instead, reserve it for the things that are most important to you. • Don’t try to change every problem area in your life all at once. Start with one or two items, then expand as you get things under control. Your life should be like a checking account, balancing out on a regular basis so that you always have assets to draw upon. By making even small deposits—taking care of yourself with a 10-minute walk or a nutritious meal—you’ll be amazed at the interest you’ll reap. 48 FOCUS of Virginia 2014
