WITH FINESSE By Julia Cushman

In both its pure, elegant aesthetic and its exceptionally refined profile, the new Tonda 1950 meets the highest standards in terms of comfort and readability: a return to the basics which define a true classic. The Tonda 1950 reinterprets the very essence of the Parmigiani style: its profile. Slender, finer, it is the perfect showcase for the brand's iconic signature - the four lugs, round and ergonomic. In rose gold or white gold, the Tonda 1950 is the new, extra-flat classic model featuring the key markers of time - hours, minutes and small seconds. The 12 Parmigiani house calibres will be completed by a component essential for the rigourous and manifold exploration of the facets of time: the extra-flat self-winding movement. With a diameter of 30 mm (13 Âź inches) and a thickness of just 2.6 mm, the new PF 700 movement allows numerous interpretations of the aesthetic. In time, a date function will be added to the calibre, with its integration already planned so as to not disturb the delicate profile of the Tonda case, just 7.80 mm thick and 39 mm in diameter. With an autonomy of 42 hours, the movement has an off-centered micro-oscillating weight in platinum 950. Indicating the hours, minutes and small seconds, the graphite or white grained dial displays its twelve time zone indexes with understated grace. The principle behind its sophistication? fundamental beauty without interfering with the time.

Despite the delicacy of its profile, the movement still offers the finest haute horlogerie finishes you would expect from Parmigiani, and ones which very few brands would apply to such a mechanism. The nickel silver main plate is sand-blasted, circulargrained and then rhodium-plated. The bridges are sand-blasted, rubbed-down or "Côte de Genève" decorated, then beveled by hand and, finally, rhodium-plated. Also note the attractive finish of each wheel, beveled, sunk, circular-grained on both faces, then gilded before cutting. The high standard of finish on each component is the result of a unique dovetailing of the different centres of competence that make up the Parmigiani Manufacture (The Foundation Watch making Manufactures), ensuring that each calibre produced is of the very highest quality. The movement and the entire exterior of the new Tonda 1950 are created entirely in-house, right up to the indexes on the dial. The watch making skill inherent in the Tonda 1950, a slim, understated model, is also expressed in the delicacy of its details.

The Lucini Italia Company was founded by Renee Frigo and Daniel Graeff on the philosophy that great tasting food comes from only the most cared-for, high-quality ingredients. Our passion is creating authentic, handcrafted gourmet foods inspired by the culinary traditions of Italy.

By Meagan Parrado

Arugula Salad with Walnuts, Apples and Fig Balsamic Reduction

Prepared in small batches using 100% natural ingredients, Lucini Italia products offer both exceptional taste and culinary performance. Our work with small regional farmers, celebrated chefs, and health and wellness experts continues to provide our customers with an unmatched selection of ingredients, gourmet recipes, quality-assurance and convenience. Meeting the demands of both home and professional chefs, the Lucini Italia family of products includes award-winning extra virgin olive oils, artisan vinegars, gourmet tomato and cheese sauces, savory soups and a special collection of limited production organic items.

Serves 4 – 5 For the reduction: 1/2 cup Lucini® Savory Fig Balsamico

Instructions:

For the vinaigrette: 1/2 cup Lucini® Extra Virgin Olive Oil 3 tbsp Lucini® Pinot Grigio Italian Wine Vinegar

Pour the balsamic vinegar in a small sauce pot over high heat. Whisk briskly, even prior to boiling. Once it starts boiling, keep whisking constantly to prevent burning. Continue until the sauce reduces by half and is of a syrupy consistency. Remove from heat and set aside.

For the salad: 6 cups arugula 2 cups chopped endive 2 Fuji apples, unpeeled, cored, thinly sliced 6 ounces Spanish Manchego cheese, shaved 1 1/2 cups pitted dates, sliced 1 cup roasted walnuts 4 large shallots, minced 20 FOCUS of SWFL 2011

Whisk oil and Pinot Grigio vinegar in bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Toss arugula, endive, apples, half of cheese, dates, walnuts, and shallots in large bowl with enough vinaigrette to coat. Season salad with salt and pepper. Mound salad in center of each plate. Drizzle balsamic syrup around salads. Sprinkle remaining cheese atop salads.

Slow Roasted Halibut with Porcini and Barolo Sauce Serves 4 Slow Roasted Halibut 1 1/2 tbsp Lucini® Extra Virgin Olive Oil 4 halibut fillets, about 6 ounces each, skinned ¼ cup dry white wine Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Preheat the oven to 300F Add the olive oil to a shallow baking dish. Place the fish fillets in the baking dish and turn to coat them. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Spoon the wine around the fish. Bake until the fish just flakes, about 20 minutes. Top with sauce below and serve immediately. Porcini and Barolo Sauce 1.5 oz dried Porcini mushrooms 1 tbsp Lucini® Extra Virgin Olive Oil 1/3 cup minced shallots ½ tsp red chili flakes 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 tbsp minced fresh thyme or 2 tsp dried thyme 2 tbsp fresh Italian parsley, minced 1/3 lb crimini mushrooms sliced thin ½ cup Barolo wine or dry red wine 2 cups Lucini® Organic Whole Tuscan Plum Tomatoes, pureed in a blender Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

Visit www.lucini.com for more recipes Instructions: Place dried mushrooms in a bowl and cover with boiling water. Leave mushrooms to rehydrate (about 15-20 minutes). Coat the bottom of a heavy bottom skillet with olive oil, sauté the shallots and chili flakes until soft. Add garlic and thyme and sauté for a few more minutes, however don’t let garlic brown. Add crimini mushrooms and salt and pepper. After some of the moisture has started to sweat out of the mushrooms, about 5 minutes, add the wine and let reduce in half. Remove the dried mushrooms from soaking liquid with a slotted spoon and reserve liquid. Rough chop the mushrooms and add to the sauté pan. Pour the mushroom water into the sauté pan straining through a fine sieve or cheese cloth. When the liquid has evaporated by 1/3 add the tomatoes. Cook tomatoes for approximately 5 minutes and finish with Italian parsley. continued on page 22... FOCUS of SWFL 2011 21

he charming transplanted slice of Italy is located in Naples Florida within strolling distance of one of the best beaches on the gulf coast and happens to be nestled in the the historic downtown district along the upscale and popular Fifth Avenue South. The clean, crisp and modern interior of the boutique has a comfortable cafe/deli style layout which includes a well equipped exhibition food prep area surrounded by display cases full of some very tempting offerings, a bar which features coffees, wines and a selection of imported waters and beers. Inside, well lit accommodating multi-use tables are often occupied by dinners and the occasional Free Wi-Fi user but I gravitate toward the exterior seating as I find the atmosphere of the courtyard and street side tables very inviting and relaxing. You can release your inner chef with the extensive selection of authentic Italian products offered

or customize a culinary gift basket for someone and choose from a great selection of wines, cheeses, olive oils, pastas and more. Beginning at four o'clock each day happy hour includes complimentary tastings from the menu and during one such tasting I had a chance to talk with owner/operators Agostino Nastasi and Natascia Marchesi and here is what I learned about the history, philosophy and mission of this newly launched endeavor. The two partners are both from Italy and share the same passions for food and both have extensive backgrounds in the food and beverage service industry. Natascia's parents owned and operated a restaurant in Italy which inspired her culinary acumen and did her sommelier studies in Italy. Agostino's food and beverage experience includes opening and operating four restaurants in Manhattan. I commented on how good the consistent presentation of the food was and Agastino reminded me that "You eat with your eyes first." Offering the best food products imported from Italy is only part of the new business' charter. Serving fresh quality dishes that make a visual impact is obviously of the utmost importance to the two entrepreneurs and it shows in every dish that goes out to every customer. The displays of candies, cakes and pastries are tantalizing and the cold cut and cheeses are arranged like works of art in a refrigerated glass museum. The walls are lined with shelves of an enticing variety of Balsamic vinegars, flavored condiments, various sweet and salty snacks, gluten free products and more. You can enroll online for a VIP membership to get discounts or get contact information if you wish to plan a party at the boutique or have an event catered. Live music performances, book signings and other various cultural events are going to be part of the attraction beginning in October and of course wine and cheese tastings are planned. I highly recommend the Hot Salami and Cheese with Gorgonzola Sandwich and a Dolce & Salato Salad and you can't go wrong with anything from the dessert menu. Buon Appetito!

Get Focused: Survey Reveals Women Less Likely Than Men to Focus on Financial Planning By Thomas Topinka

Fifty-four percent of men focus on planning for their financial health at least once a week, compared to only 42% of women, according to a Genworth survey released today that evaluates consumers' attitudes on financial wellbeing and a balanced life. Despite this, the survey found that more women than men feel financial wellbeing are important to maintaining a balanced life. "We found it interesting that those who said they need financial wellbeing to maintain a balanced life – particularly women– are less likely to spend time focusing on financial planning," said Wendy Boglioli, national Genworth spokesperson, caregiver and 1976 Olympic gold medalist. "Living well now and in retirement requires a balance between being both financially sound and physically fit. These factors are often overlooked due to busy lifestyles." Additional research suggests that having financial peace of mind in retirement is becoming a more important financial goal than accumulating as much wealth as possible, and that as people age

impossible goal for women who are juggling the competing priorities of family, career and caregiver. "The principles of achieving a balanced lifestyle are consistent with those I adopted to prepare for the Olympics," says Boglioli. "Like preparing for the Olympics, exercise routines must change and develop with input from coaches and discussions about what works. Creating your plan for financial wellbeing starts with a conversation between you and loved ones and develops over time to a written plan that can change as necessary." Boglioli offers guidance on how to manage, based on her firsthand experience in balancing each of these multiple roles: • Have a written plan: o Talk to a financial professional to establish a framework: An advisor can ask the right questions to help you understand your current situation and set achievable, realistic financial goals. • Work out for the brain: o Physical activities provide extraordinary benefits to brain function. Understanding that exercise is good for the brain as well as the body can be a motivator to participate in regular physical activity to support overall wellness. The online survey, conducted by ORC International, looked into a

The practice of “Happy Law” may sound like an oxymoron, but not for one unique Sarasota attorney. Kevin Pillion founded and manages, Co-Executor PLC, a law firm with a heart that focuses on wills, trusts and elder care planning in Southwest Florida. A tall and slender man with red hair and smiling Irish eyes, Kevin’s casual demeanor is engaging. He’s always ready with a funny quip and a good cup of hot Irish tea. That down-toearth attitude is especially refreshing when people realize that it comes with decades of legal experience. “I truly care about the people I meet, and we become friends pretty darn fast. Some of them even become my clients,” he laughs. The caring approach and understanding of family needs is a direct result of personal experience. Dealing with the care of his elderly parents and the stress that resulted has given him a deep empathy for others in that situation. Although he had a successful career in Washington, D.C., Kevin was suddenly thrust into caring for his mother and father, who could no longer manage by themselves. Eventually, Kevin left his work to focus completely on his

parents who suffered from dementia. “Both Mom and Dad really wanted to remain in their home on Cape Cod. I wanted to oblige their request, so I headed north from Washington D.C., where I had been working as an estate planning attorney and CPA,” Kevin says.

D

uring the next four years he cared for his parents full-time, spending part of the year in Cape Cod, and the remaining part of the year in Bradenton, Florida, where his parents had a winter home. He dedicated himself to their care and enjoyed sharing activities until both parents died in 2007, just six months apart. Without his parents and his caregiving role, Kevin felt a void in his life. He took time to reflect and decided he would dedicate his life to helping others. Thankfully, the fond memories of his parents, especially the trips they took together to visit family and friends in Dublin, Ireland, helped carry Kevin through this difficult period of adjustment. “Most of us tend to get caught up in the noise and rush of our daily activities, without taking time to develop a balance in our lives,” he says. At the end of each day he takes a moment to ponder life as he watches turquoise waves rolling into Siesta Key Beach from his back terrace. continued on page 41...

An act of love

Providing for your loved ones is the primary reason people establish a Last Will and Testament. But, in addition to a Last Will, a Living Trust offers greater flexibility and benefits. It allows you to keep your affairs private, as well as avoid the hassle and expense of numerous court proceedings, including probate administration, guardianship, conservatorship, and Will contests. With a Living Trust, you transfer title to your property from your name to the trustee of your Living Trust, which can be you or someone else chosen by you. You control your trust and its assets. The fact that your Living Trust would own your assets has little, if any, impact on your daily life. You can also change or revoke the Living Trust at any time. A Living Trust has become an effective estate planning tool for: • Taking care of loved ones who have mental or physical impairments, addictions or lack of investment experience; • Motivating and rewarding your heirs to make smart life decisions; • Handling complex family situations, such as second marriages and unmarried couples; • Creating flexible plans to carry out your wishes once you or a loved one has advanced in years and needs home health care or nursing home care; and • Taking care of your pet if you become incapacitated or are no longer alive.

“There’s no greater gift than awareness. Awareness of oneself, of others, and all that surrounds us in the world,” he says. While looking out at the Gulf of Mexico, Kevin responds, “I’m so fortunate to live and work in such a beautiful place.” In his spare time, Kevin is an avid reader and quotes one of his favorite writers, Joseph Addison, an English scholar from the late 1700’s: “Three grand essentials to happiness in this life are something to do, something to love, and something to hope for.” These are words that Kevin lives by. Something to Do: Kevin lives and works in Sarasota as a compassionate elder-care and estate planning attorney. Something to Love: He loves volunteering his time, as well as yoga, Reiki, meditation, and taking long walks on the beach. Something to Hope For: Kevin’s hope is to continue being of value to his family, friends and clients.

Kevin Pillion has an appreciation for all aspects of his life, and doesn’t discount anything. He believes that even the small things have to be appreciated; whether it’s observing the gracefulness of a soaring seagull, the smile on a child’s face, or a good cup of Irish tea.

Fall Fashion By Samantha Ramos Photography Noah Chen

Funny thing talking about fall in Southwest Florida, although some would say we experience perpetual summer. With cooler temperatures approaching, we think of getting out warmer clothing, long selves and jackets. Here in Florida, we experience a slight drop in temperature and the cool days of fall bring about new trends for the new season. The key is to balance your personal style and still allow the versatility for that cold chill that pops up now an then.

Style & co. $20 - $24.00

As it begins to cool, you’ll begin to reevaluate what’s in your closet. Knowing what you wear speaks volumes about your style, taste and personality. It should be at the top of your list, but shouldn't be something that takes work to accomplish. Your style should be easy and fun. Of course while maintaining that look and a well balanced checkbook allows you to rope in some of the biggest names by what you buy now and love forever.

MACY'S

very woman needs a little drama in her fall wardrobe, something ultra-stylish that increases wear ability without losing that fashionable flare. It's about evolving your items into the next season. You give something you've loved and worn a new life by wearing it with something new. It is best to update, not redo your wardrobe. Taking a blouse and bringing it together with an earth-tone skirt and tropical wrap is one possible way.

A soft blouse is an elegant addition, available in beautiful solids and rich prints. With or without a necktie it pairs well with everything, it’s the perfect choice to layer under a vest or jacket. Hemlines have become one of the hottest choices for a slim and defined waist paired with high platform heels keep the look feminine and sophisticated. A timeless handbag adds a perfect finishing touch with softly structured satchels and saddle bags inspired by authentic riding tact have an equestrian elegance for almost any occasion. Made from rich saddle brown leathers and exotic skins speak to the understated luxury of the season. Build a wardrobe that works, as this becomes part of your style. You should thoughtfully consider every single piece and ask if you can wear this in at least two situations (work, weekend or evening) and will it pair with at least one or two other items in my wardrobe? Fabric choices are very important; something lightweight and airy, maybe lightweight chambray denim for more casual pieces or tropical wool, the weave is more open and looks refined. Cotton is breathable than other fabrics, removing moisture and heat away from your skin to keep you cool and dry. Warm shades of orange, amber and green are trends for fall, but they're not dark colors, either, so they fit into a variety of seasonal regions. Stylish items don't have to be limited to a single season, and it's those more lasting looks that will transition into the upcoming season. Be it a dress, skirt, blouse or jacket. Are you color cautious? Then maybe a bright hued handbag or dark print with bold accent colors is a stylish choice. Bold shades of emerald, indigo and scarlet add a colorful edge to the season. Either contrasted with black or worn as a color blocked Mondrian-inspired outfit, the look is undeniably modern. continued on page 51...

Be sure to try them on, looking put together and well-groomed for any event is an important factor when considering if your clothing is appropriate and that it fits properly. Vera Wang once said, "A woman is never sexier than when she is comfortable in her clothes." If your outfit is too tight, too big or too low-cut, it will show in the way you wear them. E

mbracing the season's trends and choosing crisp layers for a classic, chic look is another way to make a statement by adding outerwear to become a focal point, while cozy, lite knits and tops play an accompanying role. Understated luxury can be found in rich autumnal shades, heritage plaids, menswear fabrics, supple leathers and plush wools, as these build the foundations of your fall closet. This season's trends embrace some of what’s fresh for fall, from luxurious velvet, sheer and exotic cottons, put together with fine jewelry and a few accessories. Simple lines are important in the construction of a garment and the purity of simple, clean-lined pieces that have a modern sensibility, along with sculptural metal jewelry which are essential for creating the new minimal look. The tricky part is that while it's good to infuse the excitement of a new season to go from the runway to your closet, it is best to create new ideas from previous seasons. Designers have always delighted us with the unexpected. This season is no different; a spectrum of bright colors is a welcome surprise. Retailers have begun the transition from lightweight and lighthearted clothes to the more dressed-up, sophisticated styles that come with fall fashion. Online clothing sites make shopping easy and convenient, and with the wide variety of clothing options out there today, clothing can be anything that you want it to be and can send any message that you choose. Shoppers can be enthusiastic about their new purchases, so you should know how to spend your money. If you’re financially solvent, spend 75 percent of your budget on trends and 25 percent on classics. If your budget is tight, flip those percentages. The styles of fall are rich, layered and well put together. Definitely follow your own style, learn and celebrate fashion in your city.

SHOWCASES FULL FASHION LINE AT WWDMAGIC Expo “The Ultimate Wardrobe Expander” Unveils Five Fashion-forward New Halftees at Leading Fashion Trade Show By KIMBALL THOMSON AND VERNON SCOTT

LAS VEGAS—Halftee, “The Ultimate Wardrobe Expander,” presented its entire product line— including five brand-new Halftees—at WWDMAGIC, one of the world’s leading fashion events for the apparel, accessory and footwear industry. The company’s new Fall 2011 Halftees include: Women’s Full-lace; Women’s Lace-in-front; Women’s Turtleneck; Women’s Tank-top Ribbed; Girlee Burnout; and Girlee Long-sleeved. Every Halftee in the company’s diverse product line was designed by CEO Amanda Barker, who founded Halftee in 2009. A hip, active mompreneur who grew up in small-town Wyoming, Amanda now lives in Provo, Utah with her husband Tyler, their six children, one dog and one cat. “I was nursing my third baby one day, feeling hot and uncomfortable, when the light came on for me that there had to be a better approach to layering for women and girls than anything I saw out in the marketplace,” said Amanda. Two children later, Halftee was born. In less than two years, the company Amanda launched has established a reputation for flattering, fashion-forward designs. Halftee’s versatile, comfortable product line, which includes both classic and modern looks, resonates with a broad range of women and girls, including: health-conscious women and girls engaged in dance, gymnastics or yoga; professional women moving from the boardroom to the ballroom; expectant mothers and nursing moms; and daughters of all ages heading back to school. Halftee products, currently priced from $16-24, are a highly affordable way to multiply the closets of its growing customer base. In February 2011 at a Utah boutique, Amanda met new Halftee customer Noelle Nieporte, a fashion- and business-savvy Pennsylvania native and mother of three with a penchant for asking provocative yet pertinent questions. The two 56 FOCUS of SWFL 2011

women quickly established a strong mutual affinity, and Noelle joined Halftee as executive VP of marketing and business development. “When I saw Amanda’s creations, I knew I wanted to help her build on the vision she had launched,” said Noelle. “There is nothing else that expands a woman’s wardrobe as well or cost-effectively as Halftees. They dress up or down impeccably, and virtually every outfit in my closet is transformed into something new and fresh.” Even though Amanda and Noelle have not yet launched a concerted public relations or marketing campaign, Halftee is in the midst of a three-digit month-over-month growth spurt—and there appears to be no sign of slowing for the innovative young company. “We have been delighted that the boutiques carrying our lines have reported consistent, dramatic sales increases,” said Noelle. “We are definitely poised for mega-growth.” Those interested in learning more about Halftee and its products can visit the company’s website at www.halftee.com, or its Facebook group at halftees@groups.facebook.com. Labor of Love: Art for Art's Sake

By Kayla DaCosta

When walking down the brick-lined roads of downtown Fort Myers, a few things come to sight: small boutique shops featuring locally designed jewelry, mom and papa cafes and the outlandish glass designed featured at Starbucks this month! Who is to thank for the beautiful art work? No other than David Acevedo and Xavier Brignoni, owners of Daas Gallery and part founders of the well known Art Walk, which is one of the most exciting events to be featured in downtown Fort Myers. David Acevedo is not only a featured artist at Daas Gallery, but a part owner with is longtime friend Xavier Brignoni. Brignoni and Acevedo lived in Puerto Rico and worked as celebrated artists. Both were given the opportunity to work in America and tool the opportunity to launch their art in Florida. Today they own and operate Fort Myers' Daas Gallery, a trendy gallery that not only features artists from across the world, but David Acevedo's personal collection and a diverse mix of jewelry and home goods.

D

aas gallery is unlike many galleries located in the downtown district; it features more of a Contemporary Miamistyle boutique character! Visitors can feast their eyes on modern art, vivid photography, and creative jewelry and household gifts that span from items such as earrings and necklaces to postcards and kitchenware. Apart from an acclaimed gallery, David is a prime participant in the community. He was one of the 'founding fathers' of Art Walk, which is a popular event that brings tons of locals and tourists to the streets of downtown Fort Myers every first Friday of each month. David's most recent project included working with the corner Starbucks to take part in public relations and media for Relay for Life. David has made efforts to either take part in or donate art for auction for this organization each year. On that note, David produces many originals to donate to other organizations including an AIDS awareness organization and Arts for Act refuge for battered woman. If you are interested in getting involved internally with Daas gallery or curious about the prospect of showing at the gallery feel free to call David at 239-980-1394. You can also become a fan of Daas Gallery at Daas Gallery via Facebook. 58 FOCUS of SWFL 2011

Paired with an eight-speed Tiptronic® transmission and the quattro® permanent all-wheel drive system translates this impressive power to the road. The combination of the engine and transmission helps deliver a best-in-class 21-mpg combined fuel economy. The A8 L W12, while equipped with all of the above, adds exclusive touches that provide the distinction that discerning buyers will appreciate. The single frame grille features enhanced horizontal chrome accents with a jewel-like background.
