LAWRENCE Locals call it “Mass,” short for Massachusetts Street, designed in the 1850s as the city’s main artery and named in tribute to the Massachusetts-based donors and immigrants who came into Lawrence to help establish a Free State (antislavery) stronghold in the years leading to the Civil War. More than 150 years later, Mass continues to be the heart of the city.

There are also several 2-hour-free, 2-hour-meter and 10-hour-meter coin-operated outdoor parking lots available along Vermont, New Hampshire and Rhode Island, between the 600 and 1200 blocks.

BIKING Lawrence and the University of Kansas partner in a bike share program allowing anyone to rent bikes through the VeoRide app. Bikes can be rented at variable rates for every 15-minutes of use, one-day use and more.

DeBarre with a capital B—describes herself as “just a girl from around the way, LFK (Lawrence)raised, Jackie of all trades, trying to be the change.” By day, she works as an estimator for a national architectural planning and industrial design firm, and in her free time she becomes “your favorite foodie friend.” She regularly tours the city’s new and established eateries, looking for the next great dish. Her favorite toast, “Good friends, good wine, good food … good times!” exemplifies her unmistakable zest for life.

STANLEY JAMES SMOKEHOUSE Thank you to my fellow foodie Tim “Nelly” Nelson for putting me onto this gem! I wasn’t a fan of cobbler of any kind, but now I am a fan of apple cobbler, but only from Stanley James BBQ. I have always been a fan of the half-slab though, particularly with a side of baked beans and mac and cheese (heart eyes!), and Stanley is a great place to grab a complete meal where everything on your plate is good and the dessert is even better! Now I’m hungry—time to call Nelly to see if he wants to go half on a slab.

Listen. I am a meat eater, and all of the meat at this place is GOODT! (Yes, you must say it with a T to get the full effect of the goodness I’m speaking about. Trust me, it works.) I am also a vegetable eater. All of the vegetables at this place are GOODT! With six simple sweet or spicy menu options of either chicken or pork with rice, a salad or just veggies, Hawaiian Bros gives you large portions even with their small-size option so you cannot leave this place unsatisfied. My go-to is the #2 Molokai Chicken, hot with a side of mixed vegetables and extra teriyaki sauce.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE

FOODIE Juneteenth Celebration

The annual celebration of the emancipation from slavery is held across the nation, and for the last several years the NAACP of Lawrence has joined with community members and partners to hold a free, community-wide celebration. There is soul food, musical performances, poetry reading and—most importantly—the community. Everyone shows up to celebrate in a big, family-affair atmosphere that is getting bigger and better with every year. sites.google.com/site/lawrenceksnaacp

Kansas Food Truck Festival Food trucks converge on town with classic favorites like pizza and burgers as well as new takes such as chicken stuffed with fried rice. Then there is my personal favorite, the bochi truck. The festival also has bounce houses and games for the kids to enjoy, along with live music and optional craft beer and cocktails for 21+. What makes the food truck festival a must is that it benefits local nonprofit Just Food, which feeds many local families each day. ksfoodtruckfest.com

Lawrence Farmers Market The Lawrence Farmers Market is a gem. It’s not just veggies—though the summer farm fresh veggies are awesome. There are also pies, cookies, awesome breakfast sandwiches, the best lemonade and many other great foods. You’re supporting local businesses while enjoying fresh produce and live music with some warm summer morning weather. Rise and shine for some farmers market time! lawrencefarmersmarket.org

Haskell Indian Nations University Indian Art Market and Powwows Haskell Indian Nations University is a huge part of Lawrence, and with Haskell comes the awesome cultural presence of indigenous people, traditions and food. Come for the dancing and stay for the Indian tacos, fry bread and various soups and stews. (By the way, did I say I love fry bread? If not, I LOVE fry bread!) haskell.edu

If you have a chance to see a men’s or women’s basketball game at Allen Fieldhouse—take it. In fact, many will want to plan their trip to Lawrence around an Allen Fieldhouse game to soak in the historic arena’s character and to participate in the fan rituals such as the Rock Chalk chant. But any trip to Lawrence should also include a stop at the adjacent Booth Family Hall of Athletics, a museum of KU sporting history memorabilia, tribute to standout athletes, display of national champion trophies and more. Late night in the Phog

Every KU basketball season begins with a one-of-a-kind celebration at Allen Fieldhouse, featuring scrimmages, musical performances and a good share of cheesy costumes. It’s a chance for the athletes to greet the audience before the rigors of the season and a chance for the fans to see a personal side of each team member. Late Night in the Phog is free and open to the public on a first-come, firstseated basis. kuathletics.com

KU Homecoming

The football game is still a centerpiece, but the weeklong KU homecoming events are a chance for KU fans to gather at a series of public and alumni-invite events celebrating the past and future of KU with everything from a food festival, alumni mentoring sessions and the downtown homecoming parade. kualumni.org

Rock Chalk Roundball Classic

Lawrence is known as a basketball town, but one of the biggest townie spectator sports is adult kickball. Check out the summer schedule at kawvalleykickball.com.

Runners and bikers will love the Lawrence Loop, a linked trail system of over 6 miles that encircles the entire city.

Each year, former KU basketball stars return for a charity game, VIP dinner and golf tournament, all dedicated to raising funds for local families whose children are fighting cancer. This is a great way to enjoy time with KU talent and support a meaningful cause. rockchalkroundball classic.com

KU Relays

For much of KU history, the biggest sporting event on campus was the annual KU Relays track and field event. With a history of athletes who went on to Olympic success, the KU squad continues to compete at the highest levels, and this annual showcase of talent is a delight to watch at the new Rock Chalk Park on the northwest edge of town (a complex that is also home to KU Softball and KU Soccer teams). kuathletics.com

WATSON PARK 727 Kentucky St lawrenceks.org/lprd

Recreation and green spaces are built into the fabric of Lawrence with the city’s extensive network of public parks. One of the most visited is Watson Park, featuring a retired locomotive, a picnic shelter, an open green lawn and an adjacent facility with playground equipment, hoops and the public outdoor aquatic center. Just on the edge of downtown, this is a perfect spot to relax or to bring children for a muchneeded playtime break.

Rim Rock Farm High School Classic

Nestled in the rolling woodlands north of Lawrence, the University of Kansas’ Rim Rock Farm is a customized running course that takes runners through covered barns and across beautiful and challenging scenery. This picturesque location is open each fall for a premier national high school cross-country event and a chance for spectators to enjoy the scenery and cheer on the young racers. kuathletics.com/ facilities/rim-rock-farm

With the mantra “Leave No Trace” in mind, Marissa Marshall loves to walk and jog around the parks and trails of Lawrence with her energetic pug mix, Frankie. She balances dual roles at the University of Kansas, being an employee and nontraditional student. Because Marissa believes that finding outdoor adventures is for everyone, she appreciates Lawrence’s efforts to make outdoor areas/activities accessible and inclusive.

BAKER WETLANDS

LAWRENCE LEVEE TRAIL

The Baker Wetlands are my favorite outdoor area in Lawrence. I enjoy walking the trails while taking in the wildlife and native plants. There are various spots along the trails to have a seat, enjoy the environment, watch for wildlife and relax. Stick around long enough and you may spot a bald eagle.

At DoubleTree by Hilton, we’ve dedicated ourselves to spreading nice every day. From a warm chocolate chip cookie welcome to our genuine staff, we’re here to make your stay as nice as we possibly can. It’s not just a promise. It’s how we do things.

Walnut Park 211 N 4th St

The Lawrence Levee Trail is great for a longer walk, run, or bike ride. You can see downtown Lawrence across the Kansas River, then continue down the trail to be surrounded by vast farmlands and greenery. The Levee Café, conveniently located right next to the northwest entrance, is a perfect stop to grab a fresh bite to eat and refuel.

With a state park section and an Army Corps of Engineers section, the complex has an activity for every outdoor lover, from campsites and trails to kayaking and paddling. I recommend Clinton State Park’s North Shore Blue and White Loop trails for a moderately challenging hike that captures beautiful views of the lake and woodland.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE

Day in and day out, the Granada is bringing a range of national acts into Lawrence while also hosting some of the city’s biggest local music events. Recently, the venue has been hosting a series of free, outdoor community concerts known as “Live on Mass” events (named after downtown’s central street, Massachusetts Street, where the block party concerts are held).

Mardi Gras Parade

Started by the former Lawrence musical duo Truckstop Honeymoon, this annual tradition continues as a gathering of costumed musicians who progress down Massachusetts Street, playing tunes all along the way and ending with a raucous performance at Free State Brewery.

Kansas Nutcracker

The Lawrence Arts Center hosts this holiday tradition. It’s a retelling of the classic E.T.A. Hoffman tale and Pyotr Tchaikovsky ballet through the lens of Kansas settlers during the dangerous years on the Kansas plains leading up to the Civil War. lawrenceartscenter.org

Lied Center shows

The University of Kansas Lied Center brings in some of the nation’s (and world’s) biggest stage performances, including singersongwriters, hip-hop artists, classical quartets, jazz bands, orchestras and much more. Tickets for headline events go quickly, so be sure to check out the schedule in advance of your visit. lied.ku.edu

1510 N. 3rd St whiteschoolhouse.com

This restored historic one-room schoolhouse is an event space that happens to host some of the city’s most innovative, all-ages musical concerts. Check out the venue’s website and look for posters around town to see if your trip coincides with a White Schoolhouse event.

Pride Parade

Lawrence values its commitment to inclusive, accepting communities— and the annual Pride Parade and street concert is an opportunity to publicly affirm and celebrate Lawrence’s diversity. The June daytime event has been followed by a Pridethemed concert and drag performances at Granada, and it continues to evolve and grow. Iheartlocalmusic.com

Kaw Valley Public House Open Mic Nights

33

The relatively new North Lawrence venue has jumped onto the musical scene with regular in-house concerts and its popular Monday night open mic concerts. Since this is Lawrence, of course, the host, Megan Luttrell, just happens to have a PhD in Russian language and literature and is a talented singer-songwriter in her own right. kawvalleypub.com

LOVE GARDEN

822 MASSACHUSETTS ST LOVEGARDENSOUNDS.COM

There are the occasional album-release concerts at Love Garden—and if your visit overlaps with one of them, be sure to attend. But Love Garden is best known for its quality, eclectic collection of LPs (new releases and bargain used selections). Browse through the stacks, ask the staff to lend you some earphones to sample tunes and enjoy the selections from the in-house DJ.

Since opening in 2002, Wa Restaurant has become one of Lawrence’s most popular restaurants. Owner/head chef, James Koh, blends traditional Japanese ingredients with fresh fish, producing classic sushi and contemporary innovations like “Sushi Pizza” and the flame-cooked “Kansas Roll.” Wa’s teriyaki, tempuras and Korean dishes appeal to any appetite.

LIBERTY HALL THE REPLAY A small venue with a huge reputation. This is a bar with an emphasis on live musical performances on the outdoor patio stage. It’s a place where musicians go to hear other musicians; a place for legendary latenight performances as well as family-friendly weekend afternoon concerts. Also home to one of the city’s biggest karaoke nights, The Replay is worth a stop any day of the week.

644 Massachusetts St. libertyhall.net

A Lawrence institution. A combined arts cinema theater and movie rental shop, Liberty Hall’s historic stage has also hosted some of the largest national acts to come through town—ever, from Susan B. Anthony and Oscar Wilde to Janelle Monáe and Billy Corgan. With fresh Free State beer on tap in the concession room, this is the quintessential Lawrence concert space.

LAWRENCE UNIVERSITIES Lawrence is home to two great universities, each with an unmistakable history and each an integral part of the community. The University of Kansas is the state’s flagship public university and a national leader in several areas of education. Sporting fans might also know it as the home of the Jayhawks. Haskell Indian Nations University has emerged over the past decades as one of the nation’s premier intertribal nations universities dedicated to educating Native youth from across the United States. Both are open to visitors and host events throughout the year.

40 Visitors Guide 2020

UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS Lawrence is one of the nation’s leading cities for advanced degrees per capita (meaning we can be fairly smart—when we wish—without taking ourselves too seriously). The state’s flagship university has been intertwined with the growth and development of the city since the 1860s. Townie? Gownie? We’re all connected, with strong coordination between the university and municipality. Campus events are almost always open to the public, residents and visitors alike. Put some Jayhawk into your visit.

THE COMMONS Housed in historic Spooner Hall, The Commons is a collaboration of KU institutions across the disciplines of science and the humanities to host public discussions, lectures and programs on a wide range of themes.

SPORTS Allen Fieldhouse, home to the men’s and women’s basketball teams, is recognized as one of the nation’s most exciting college game venues. In 2016, the adjacent DeBruce Center opened as a museum of basketball history and home to James Naismith’s document outlining the original rules of “Basket Ball.” The on-site Booth Family Hall of Athletics museum is also full of Jayhawk sporting history.

FANDOM Get your official Jayhawk sporting gear at the KU Store in Allen Fieldhouse, or at the KU Bookstore in the Student Union.

TWO MUSEUMS The Spencer Museum of Art and the KU Natural History Museum sit within a very short walk of one another. Each is worth an individual visit—combined, they present a full day’s immersion in culture, history and beauty.

CAFÉ ON THE HILL A new addition to the KU scene, McClain’s Market offers coffee, pastries, teas and other treats just on the edge of Jayhawk Boulevard and at the heart of Jayhawk nation.

The KU campus and Downtown Lawrence are only a 15-20 minute walk or a 10-minute bike ride apart (if you didn’t bring your bike, you can use the new Veo Ride bike share program). You can also park your car at the campus garage (for a fee) or take the combined city/university transport bus into or out of the university. Visitors Guide 2020
